BIG disappointment from a HUGE Halo fan. I must admit that this seems like it should be called, "Halo 2: Episode 1." It just feels like a small advancement from Halo 2 in every single term. I do enjoy the multiplayer and that's why I give it a 6. Single player is extremely boring and repetitive.

Generic is the best word to describe this series. Halo 1 took all the best parts from other games, and put it all into one game. Shoot all the bad guys, run over here, shoot all these guys, ok now run over here, kill these guys. It was FUN, and the story was actually engaging, involving twists, dramatic moments and a common hated enemy that you actually enjoyed killing. But then the sequels came, and the series started to lag. Its like Bungie didnt even try to top themselves. the sequels do nothing new or exciting, and do nothing to enhance the series. Overrated is also another word to describe Halo 3. The critics absolutely praise this game like theyve never seen it done before. I played this game 10 years ago when it was called Doom, Half-Life, Tribes, Medal of Honor, Wolfenstein, and every other fps created before this game. This game is overrated, overyhyped, and has been done many times before, and better. Expand

Average. It was my biggest disappointment. The single player gets boring and no where near as epic as Bungie made it out to be. The multiplayer takes a step down from Halo 2, getting rid of many of the open maps and replacing them with cramped corridors. The massive hype this game receives is amazing. Expand

Meanwhile, the soundTRACK is very well done, and it is worth owning if you're a fan of contemporary or Halo music in general. The controls feel clanky and awkward (even more so now), and I have never enjoyed being taken out of scope view or crouch when I'm under fire. Moving through the jungle and exploiting its features in the first mission is a real joy, and the final mission is absolutely epic, yet the stuff in between leaves much to be desired. The story and cut-scenes are well done, and they set a nice backdrop for saving humanity and the galaxy yet again; definitely a highlight of the game. The Multiplayer element of this game is very well done, and overall it's arguably the best multiplayer structure for any of the Halo games. Nonetheless, I can only do so much running around and shooting of human opponents, before the multiplayer begins to feel a lot less fun, and a lot more like work. As I am not being paid to play the game, reaching level 50 and becoming a 'world beater', is a relatively empty experience and offers next to no real-life value whatsoever. My advice to fans of this genre is to seek out Halo Reach and Halo 4, as those games are far superior in almost every way. All-in-All, Halo 3 is a decent game. However, in this reviewer's opinion, it was and still is extremely overrated, and it is certainly not an essential game for XBOX 360 owners. Expand

It’s a game that could have been better than it was, with few surprises. Ultimately, this game felt like just ‘wrapping up the series’ than really delivering a surprising, exciting experience.

First off, you can’t understand all of the plot without reading a book, which is not how games should be made. If you can’t understand everything that’s in a game during the game’s run time, that part should be cut or included in another way. There were too many questions I had about the story of this game for this to go unmentioned.

Second, there were big spikes in difficulty that were surprising. You’d wander through an area full of big, tough enemies and get to the next and it’s, like, three grunts. Odd. Not game-breaking, and still an interesting game (and series) to experience, but odd.

Finally, even after multiple Halos, I’m still getting lost in the levels. A consistent objective marker is such a key quality of life feature, but this game only turns on the marker for the more difficult locations. That’s great, but I’m such a moron that I needed it more often, ha.

The ending was something you could have seen coming a while ago (or, at least, I did), although I think maybe I’ve played too many action games lately, if I’m starting to get a sense for the plots. Time to switch genres.

Single Player: I was hoping that I was going to be able to finish the fight, humanity's fight that is. However, once again, Bungie decided to confuse me with a bunch of amazing advertisements and produce a lack-luster game. It's a pretty average first-person shooter when you think about it. You just point your gun at enemies and hold the trigger down until they are dead. That's about it. There is absolutely nothing new here for fans of the genre, or even fans of the series. This is just Halo 2 with a new lick of paint. Quite frankly if it wasn't for the avalanche of adverts and media attention generated by Microsoft, Halo 3 would have been considered mediocre at best. It's games like this that really get on my nerves. They follow a predictable and monotonous structure whilst distracting everyone from other, far superior, titles which have clearly made an effort to revitalise the genre. I'm talking about Crysis, CoD4 and Bioshock ofcourse. Buy Halo 3 for the multiplayer if you must but remeber this: you don't have to be a sheep and get Halo 3 just because mother Microsoft SAID it was good. Halo 3 is exactly what one has come to expect from the Halo franchise: Amazing Multiplayer. Other than that, you really have nothing to write home about.

The main disappointment for me was that Halo 3 is Halo 2 with a single story arc and better graphics. Sure there are a few new mechanics that are neat, like detaching a turrent, but those really do not add to the flavor of the game.

Its still your basic FPS with no innovation and a story that still hurts my brain.

The mutliplayer is where the game shines. There is great variety in the map styles with halo, and each map can play basically any game type. The games are big, fast paced (usually), and entertaining. That is until you go online with the multiplayer. I like to think i am not counting the general persona found within the Halo community against the score of the game, as Bungie has no control over these people.

The addition of the Forge was a neat idea, but it seems to be a little less practical than one would hope. It works well when playing with friends, but the online applications are essentially lost. In contrast, the Theater feature is completely pointless. There is no need for me to invite my friend into a room and show him over and over and over and over the time i ran him over with the warthog and he started dry humping the rock he landed on.

To recap: Pointless single player, Cool multiplayer, and some new features that failed to hit the mark. IMO, you are better of with TF2.

The Master Chief what a cool video game charicter . its unfortunite that his only real great game was the first halo . and his series has been sliding into the crapper ever since Halo 2 . though Halo 3 is a improvment over the awful halo 2 game i doubt this series will ever capture the magic halo 1 did . well lets get alittle positive for abit on halo 3 shall we . the 4 player co-op onlineThe Master Chief what a cool video game charicter . its unfortunite that his only real great game was the first halo . and his series has been sliding into the crapper ever since Halo 2 . though Halo 3 is a improvment over the awful halo 2 game i doubt this series will ever capture the magic halo 1 did . well lets get alittle positive for abit on halo 3 shall we . the 4 player co-op online is a great feature downside is though 3 of thoose people have to be elites and cant be other spartans >< . the game has fixed some of the wepons balance issues from halo2 ... some not all the pistol still sucks and a few others. lots of scarabs to fight and fighting 2 at once with 4 buddys ... Awsome . map editor is sweet along with instant replays that can be saved when playing online . controls are solid as they ever where . now thats pretty much where it ends for any thing good i can say about this game . the ending in this game stunk the ending on legendary stinks even more . the online is garbage mainly do to its searching system . you can wait up to 10 min some times to find a match . whats made worse is lets say you jsut wana play Big team death match on sand trap . because that map is awsome its huge lots of vehicles so lots o fun . well good luck with that the game may put you in sand trap but it will probubly give you terratorize , capture the flag(I HATE CAPTURE THE FLAG) , Team rockets , or some other lame game mode that you and i know I dont wana play!!! i came online to have fun and want to play the maps and modes im gona have fun in . unfortunitly bunjie doesnt want you to have fun it only wants to destroy it . now it may be different if you like all the maps and all the game modes . but i dont and shouldnt have to jump through a bunch of damn hoops to have fun . yes there is a custom match set up where you can select you map and game mode but no one ever plays that they only play ranked . so good luck trying to get a game in that. this game isnt as evil as halo 2 which i give a 3/10 too but its still crap and halo ODST is even worse then this . my final conclusion is this series must die . the master chief has been to tarnished to be cool any more . its so sad. Halo 3 is one of the first games I ever bought for the 360 (along with Crackdown (never finished), Forza 2 (came with the console - awesome game), & Gears of War (my favorite game on the 360). This was 5 years ago. I STILL haven't finished Halo 3. Why? It's boring, repetitive, and even more boring. I guess like Mac fanboys, I'll just never understand Halo fanboys. The Graphics look last gen. The gameplay feels like it's from 2001. The dialogue is cliche, and the voice acting it awful. I still don't understand the story. The level design is shallow. The difficulty is very unbalanced. This game is very bad.

Its just Halo and Halo 2 with better graphics. The online mode has dedicated servers and smooth play but the main game? The story is rubbish. The graphics are average and nothing new. The online could have had way more editing options but it was just a bland blast em up with crap maps. I think this game is too over hyped to be honest.

Meh, this one felt weak for (I played the Master Chief Collection version of it). It's the most fascistic and melodramatic of them all yet. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as CE or Reach. This game just rehashes everything from 1 & 2 and puts them in a bigger package. But I was more bored than entertained.

Pros: + The epilogue in zero gravity is kinda cool (and almost touching). +

    Pros:

+ Some of the space cutscenes look epic (though, the low resolution reduces the illusion a bit).

    Cons:
    - Enemies and allies AI is weak. Allies in cars where dropped me 100+ from the cliffs. Enemies freeze from time to time.
    - The story is confusing. Like it's cool that we change locations so quickly, but I wasn't clear what's happening and what's my role in it most of the game. Also, the dated engine doesn't allow to take the melodrama of the story seriously.
    - The level navigation and encounter design are weak too. Like 10+ times I was confused on what I should do and where I should go.

I'm actually going to give the game a 4 rating as writing this review has just reminded me how grinding the single player missions were, and I originally had given it 7. What a shame. HALO 1 was ment for the PC but microsoft saw it as a good game and made it a launch title for the XBOXand as is was a game converted from the PC it had a much better lenthy Story and game play. then HALO 2 came along and because console owners are supposed to like playing games for shorter periods( dont know where they get that idea from) they focused on the muliplayer part and add some crappy short story, but because you only find fanboys are consol owners microsoft knew that they would buy it up, even though its is so much shorter than halo 1. now for some reason HALO 3 hit the town and again for some reason these fanboys havnt grown up and they still think that HALO 3 will deliver, and you have all been duped again. HALO 3 is to cut this long story short is basicly HALO 2 with some extra multiplayer maps and what a suprise the story element is even shorter than HALO 2.
I cant belive you guys actually pay £30+ a year to go online and use voice chat. well that what my bro does. me ive got a bit more sence and waisted my money on a hi spec PC where games are cheaper and online is all free. HALO 2 on the PC though exactly the same as the XBOX version is a complete FLOP on the PC, us PC owners will be enjoying FPS with lenthy storys lines and huge multiplayer areans like CRYSIS, HALFLIFE 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.. Still cant belive my bro pays £39 for 360 games. HALO 3 does not even try to puch the graphics on the 360 and its no way worth the £39 asking price. and i laugh that one of the selling points of Halo2 was that master cheif can hold two guns. hahahahaha

the only good thing going for this is the extra multplayer maps.

A generic shooter, the story is stupid and single player is easy on legendary. All those Xbox360 fan boys say that they have halo 3, that really isn't an achievement. Also multiplayer is filled with immature kids who tk you just to get the flag. I do not recommend you buy this game, maybe rent, but not buy.

Boring storyline. Really bad gameplay. here's a list of what could be done to improve gameplay.
    1. New storyline (enough with the cliff hangers leading to disappointing finishes)
    2. should have bought back the homing rocket 3. not enough use of the Spartan laser (whats the point of bringing it into the game if we are not gonna get to use it all that much) 4. Let's pilot more

    5. Let's pilot a SCARAB. how about that?
    6. Give us better bosses (like halo 2). fighting the scarab's was the only boss that was interesting in the whole game
    7. If the gravemind was evil, let master chief finish him off, not another nuclear bomb-run-for-your-life ending.
    8. more ability to scale the terrain
    9. bring back dual weilding needlers
    10. if you are gonna bring back weapons from the first game, make sure the player has the ability to use it like they did in the first game (a.k.a pistol - no zooming capability)

thats all i have to say. thoroughly disappointed after finishing the game even on legendary.

Halo 3 is one of the most overated games ever. Fanboys are all over it and keep shouting about how its the best game ever. The single player is rather pathetic, poor storyline, poor characters and very basic and unimaginative levels. Once you've played through the single player you probably won't ever come back to it. The online multiplayer is good but its not anything to cry about. Some of the stages are quite well made though. Overall Halo 3 is an average FPS. It doesn't do anything new, just tries to copy from other FPSs. The guns are unbalanced and uninteresting except the Spartan Laser. The online is alright. Forge is meh, its just Bungies lazy attempt at a stage builder. I would say Halo 3 is the worst FPS i've ever played. Perfect Dark is better than Halo 3 in every way except graphics and yet that was out 8 years before it. Half-Life, Goldeneye, Bioshock and Timesplitters are more examples of better made FPS's. CoD4 is another overated FPS but its definately better than Halo 3. Expand

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.
  3. 100
It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
