if you are choosing this game over battlefield 3, you are an idiot. the CoD series hasn't changed in a few years, this is no different. if you like paying $60 a year just to keep playing same game, you're probably in a fraternity or your parents buy all your video games and don't check sites like metacritic before you buy things. be smart, buy a real game.

There are so many issues that I won't be able to cover them all, even with a 5000 character limit, but I've had people spawn in front/behind me, spawnkilled an infinite number of times and had major issues with lag and hit detection. It's a real shame, since this could be a really good game but I'd instead recommend sticking to Modern Warfare 2 until the next game comes out, providing it isn't another copy/paste title like this is. And to be fair, I don't mind about it being more of the same, it's a formula that works to some extent, but they've got it all wrong in terms of weapon balance, map design... The list goes on. I don't think a single score would be entirely representative, so I'd give Spec-Ops mode a 7.5, Campaign an 8.5 and Multiplayer a 2. Providing it stays as it is and Infinity Ward refuse to patch it, as they've done with MW2...
This is an updated review, and I have lowered the score to compensate for the distinct lack of promise for any fixes. It's like they just can't be bothered to fix online multiplayer at all, and people have noted that a great internet speed makes the game run much better. When I play a game online, I'd rather it be a test of skill rather than who can buy the fastest internet, but maybe that's just me.

I finally got rid of my crappy Verizon DSL and went back to road runner. Since then, MW3 has played great. There's still some lobbies that I get in that drive me nuts, but I drop out and jump in a new game. Can't wait for the new maps to drop.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the newest and most likely final addition to the Modern Warfare franchise arrived not too long ago, but did it live up to the hype? And is it worth your $60? But if you come expecting lots of new and exciting stuff that will make sure you get your moneys worth you'll probably be left feeling unsatisfied.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the newest and most likely final addition to the Modern Warfare franchise arrived not too long ago, but did it live up to the hype? And is it worth your $60? If you're a hardcore fan of the franchise, maybe. But if you come expecting lots of new and exciting stuff that will make sure you get your moneys worth you'll probably be left feeling unsatisfied. Modern Warfare 3 might have a new coat of paint on it as opposed to MW2, but at its core it is borderline identical. The spawning system is still horrendous, despite how hard Infinity Ward and the other developers of them game have apparently been working to correct them. When I still played this title spawning next to enemies (and I literally mean one maybe two feet away) was a regularity in Free-For-All. It even made its way into team based game modes that could allow you to spawn right in the path of an enemy attack only to die seconds later. There are still overpowered weapons, annoying campers that refuse to leave their corner with a claymore by it,and immature children that shouldn't be even playing the game to begin with. Plus there's more killstreaks that are rather overpowered and MORE DEATHSTREAKS. Robert Bowling, you're a lying pr*ck. You said that Last Stand was no longer in the game, but Final Stand (instead of a pistol you get your primary weapon... freaking lovely...) still remains! As well as Martrydom and the brand new and ridiculous Dead Man's Hand. Another thing to note about this game is that they're still using fake guns and and the same reload animations for almost every one. For the fake guns, I mean the ones that aren't licensed. One of which is the L86 LSW (returning from MW2). That gun does not exist, it is actually the L85A2 which ironically is officially licensed in Battlefield 3. Same goes for the "Barrett .50 Cal". There is no such thing! The real Barrett weapon in the game is the M82A1, but I guess they still can't get the licensing even after 5 or so years. LAME.

As for other aspects of the game, the few new ones there are, they aren't half bad. Some Proficiencies for guns were useful, but some of them were borderline pointless. I don't see why they even bothered to have a Proficiency named Kick to reduce recoil when almost all of the guns people use have next to no real recoil at all. One admittedly good addition was Spec Ops Survival. Survival is based off of the tried and truly fun wave based survival game mode that has been featured in countless games over the years. While it is fun, the co-op is less that enjoyable at times. I tried playing with other friends, close to around 10 matches in total, and around half of them died half way through because of faulty connections that killed the match for no good reason. Plus, when not host, it is truly felt. When I was playing with a friend that typically has a 4 Bar connection I felt like I had a 3 or 2 bar connection making killing enemies a bit more of a source of pain than fun.

Another key topic for this new game is the direct usage of the new CoD ELITE service. This allows users to have new levels of playing, clans, contests for real prizes, and if you're a premium member (which has a costly fee) other things such as getting all map packs for "free" and available vastly earlier than non-premium users. Although I do have a bone to pick with Elite. While I am not a PS3 player, I must say I am truly miffed about Xbox 360 users still getting the map packs before PS3 players even when a lot of PS3 players likely bought their premium membership for the express purpose to be on even ground with the 360 users. Seriously Activision, you REALLY f*cked up there. One of the last things I'll discuss is the campaign. The campaign is arguably one of the best parts of MW3, being filled with plenty of large scale set pieces and a fairly good story. But like the multiplayer, I wasn't entirely satisfied. I more so played through it just to burn some free time rather than actually wanting to play through for the enjoyment of the story.

All in all, compared to other shooters released this year, MW3 is a very sub-par game. It lacks significant new content, it's almost identical to the last two call of Duty iterations, and it's still frustrating to no end. And to those who are competent, you may find that it can be incredibly easy to win. So easy that winning becomes boring. That's right, Call of Duty managed to make winning BORING. *slow clap* Well done, Call of Duty. You achieved something which nothing should ever do. Rating 4/10

The Call of Duty franchise has gone through steady improvements and updates since the release of Modern Warfare, and while it is formulaic, the Call of Duty formula is one that works, more or less. The campaign feels, as it has in past games, not much like 'real' warfare, with allies that move on without you through hordes of enemies with poor AI. Multiplayer is fun as ever.

Which Modern Warfare was this, again? The more changes, the more stays the same. My review takes into account the value of the game for its price tag - if you have any of its predecessors, save yourself the money and play their prestige mode.

Yet another Call of Duty is amongst us but this time it comes from two studios (Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games). But this was the strongest point of the entire game, the Spec Ops was boring and has no replay value whatsoever, the Spec Ops survival mode is fun but only for a few hours. I must say though there seems to be a little more variety to the Spec Ops missions. But graphically; it's the EXACT same, the gun skins are the same for guns that were in previous COD games, and the way the weapons feel they don't feel right. The multiplayer however has been tweaked a little; the adding of strike packages. The strike packages are killstreak rewards but more varied as you have up to a total of 3 to choose from:
    -Support
    -Assault
-Specialist For support everytime you help your team out in some way you get a point to go towards your killstreak (this could be capturing a flag or defusing a bomb, killing people etc). The Assault is just like your standard COD games, when you get a kill that goes towards your killstreak reward but when you die it resets. Then there is the Specialist which is the same as Assault but this time when you get to 1 of your killstreak rewards you get a perk easy enough? When you die that gets reset just like the Assault strike package. These offer new ways to play but don't really work for me as everyone uses the support strike package because it doesn't reset when you die. In the way of game modes they've added 1 new game mode and kept the rest in which I though was very disappointing, I was expecting at least 3-4 different game modes the one game mode is called 'Kill Confirmed'. It works very similar to normal TDM but there's a twist; when you kill someone they drop a dogtag, run over to the dogtag to pick it up the first to a certain score wins. This mode just feels rushed and VERY similar to Crysis 2s' killstreak system.

While the single player campaign is short but fun the rest of the game feels flat out boring, I would recommend getting the game when it comes down in price (if that will ever happen). Let's hope Treyarchs' game next year offers more that MW3.

First off, a game of this magnitude really should have not come out in this state- There are to much lag and latency in the game to let this just pass bye You get killed behind walls and other hard walls. On your end of the line your far behind the wall, BUT when you do look at the killcam feature in the game you can clearly see that you where far away frrom that wall that you thought you got behind to take cover.

Thats just some of the problems, And they do still, after 2 years since mw 2, have problems with Over-powered guns. What I am most disappointed in is the both the developers did promise on E3 June 2011 that they were not going to include shotguns, second chance and other perks that player over the years have learnt to hate.

Don´t get me wrong on this, the games singleplayer part is fantastic, like a really intense action movie. But that is just 6 hours of gameplay, Is the game really worth 60$ for 6 hours of entertainment?

Based on my experiense with the game I would not recomment people to get this game, atleast not when its 60$, Its really not worth that much for the 6 hours singelplayer, and its certainly is not worth that kind of money for the multiplayer part.

And one more thing, who would wanna pay for MW 2,5?

Honestly, the campaign is a campaign, I dont think it needs a rating since ofcourse it's a wild ride, crazy scenes, and explosive events. But the multiplayer? I am a devotee of this game and MW2 and MW1. I love hardcore team deathmatch to get the realism of one shot one kill, or 2 shots and a kill. Loading up a person with bullets and they dont die is just not fun or realistic to me. So what about this hardcore mode and why did i rate it so bad? Compared to MW2, this one is just terrible. I'll start with the maps. EVERY ONE of the maps are close quarters, small, and clustered. Some can be a little larger, but with all the trash in them, they become close quarters. As a huge fan of sniping and allowing more distance, I am extremely disappointed. I dont mind a few close quarter maps, but on MW3, they are ALL close quarters. There is maybe one map that you can snipe on effectively. My fav map from the last game was Wasteland. I am so disappointed that they forgot all about the sniping in this game and settled only for close quarters. So there is strike number 1.
So what else? How about the spawning. In the last game, it was possible to understand the maps, understand the general area a team was spawning so you could form a plan or hold down/attach one side of the map. The spawning is so general and random in this, you can think you have a corder of the map locked down, then they will spawn someone right behind you. Or they will spawn you right next to a group of enemies. I think this is a great way of spawning for Free For All, but NOT team based games. I cant count the amount of times that I got killed from behind in an area of the map where there is no way someone could have got behind me. They were spawned there. very very irritating. I really enjoyed being able to formulate a strategy in the last game, but it is impossible in this one with the random spawning and the clustered maps. I URGE THE DEVELOPERS to take a look at the stats. Compare the average person's life on this game to the last game. I bet it is drastically less because of the map size and close quarters spawning. It is just not fun. Again.... it would be perfect for free for all, but NOT FOR TEAM DEATHMATCH. So that is strike 2.
And finally... while the other game had this issue too, im seeing it more in this one. Bullet lag. Several times a match I will die when i get into the clutch with someone else, even point blank. Clearly my weapon fires, I can see the my muzzle blast and hear my gun fire, yet im the only one to die. and it's point blank so theres no way to possibly miss. It just doesn't make sense to me how something like that can still be an issue. The only thing i can think of is they still have that bullet lag issue, where to me it appears that I shot either first or at the same time, but to the other guy, he shot first, or to the system he show and may have already killed me, but to me, I am still alive and can shoot, but my kill doesnt count. only my death. So that is strike 3. I sincerely regret purchasing Elite Premium. Their service has failed in so many ways already, from it's launch to it's lack of fulfilling promises. I can overlook the bullet lag as i did with the last one, but the random spawning and lack of variety in maps just kills me. I will try out BF3 (again, ive been a devoted MW fan), If BF3 appears to be better in these areas as I've read, I'll be a lifetime fan of them from then on. For shame on MW3, InfinityWard, Sledgehammer, and all the like. You lost a fan because you were narrow minded and all about the short game (pun intended). Next time try for some map variety and intelligent spawns that allow for gameplay strategies to occur. I used to be a big Ghost Recon fan, but thought after how good MWF has been doing, i dont see why I'd go back... but thanks to MW3. I eagerly await trying BF3 and Ghost Recon (when it comes out) for the variety that i love. So long MW3, you crapped on your fans for a narrow minded result . "You'll love our game, as long as you love what we love" sounds like "you buy a car in any color you want, as long as you want black". Lack of choice is a killer.

This patch hasn't been scheduled for release and never will be.

If you can't tell, there are plenty of things which could be fixed with this game as far as the multiplayer gameplay is concerned, but to date have yet to be addressed. The patches which have been released have done nothing to improve overall playability (if they were even patches at all, most people can't even see or feel a difference). I've stopped playing this all-together and am sorely upset that I spent over $100 on the weakest, most overhyped game in COD history. Please don't make the same mistake millions have made. Save your money.

Did the quality of the game cause the sales to be what they are?
    Disappointingly, no to both.
This is simply a mediocre game that feels unfinished and rushed, and, as to avoid beating around the bush, just not very fun.
I am an optimist so I will start with the good first.
-Survival! It is decent, but once you hit that wave you can never get past you realize you won't ever pass it, so it isn't fun anymore after you unlock everything.
-Leveling up! You don't go 5 minutes without increasing your weapon level or getting promoted or completing some kind of challenge.
-Customization! My classes are unique to me, and that is a great feeling.
Now for what isn't the greatest.
-Visuals. For a blockbuster title, it falls way short of expectations, especially considering the developers' nearly unlimited budget. It isn't necessarily that the graphics were sub-par (but were beginning to show their age), but that the color palate and the lighting was atrocious. I could barely see anything, even after adjusting brightness because of the monochromatic nature of the included maps. Every map has the exact same "ruined city" theme, and they all seem far to similar to get a new experience all the time. That leads me into the next topic, maps.
-Maps. I have never played a game where the maps were this poorly made and dull since 2003. Not only are they too cramped for sniping, if that's your niche, they are also far too large for many CQB encounters, making shotguns and sniper rifles completely useless. Every building has a similar design to the next, and lack of effort is apparent. Each CoD had its own Nuketown, a community favorite map of some sort. Modern Warfare 3 lacks even that. Arkaden in particular was utterly terrible.
-Campaign. Other games do it better. The AI is dumb as bricks and aren't any sort of fun to fight. The only redeeming feature of the campaign may be its length, but I didn't even feel the will to play it to the end because it just wasn't fun.
-Sound. I have NEVER gotten a headache or gotten frustrated with sound in a game before, and to make matters worse, it was all directly imported from Modern Warfare 2 or was a generic noise only slightly tweaked. Sound effects were weak in general, and the guns all sounded like toys. Explosions were like firecrackers, which is even worse for a noise you will hear 24/7 in this game. -Recycled. At least I give credit to Treyarch for doing something different with their switch from World at War to Black Ops, giving the two games a different feel while the 3rd installment in the Modern Warfare series feels too much like the second, especially in multiplayer which is ridiculously broken.
-Multiplayer. The weapon leveling system is pretty nice, but besides that it gives me deja vu of the days of MW2. Heck, sometimes people weren't sure which one I was playing! The mechanics of multiplayer are simple and the same as always, not really any notable new gametypes. As if it couldn't get any less of a downer than that, the spawning system is atrocious, and don't even get me started on weapon balance. I have a 5.7 K/D, and that was because I found I could exploit the weapon unbalances to the extreme to get that insane ratio, not because I am a good player. If you owned MW2 and loved it, never got bored of it I'd wait another month or so until the huge price drop then you will probably enjoy it. If you are new to CoD, I would stay away as it isn't worth the money right now.
If you make your purchases only after a ton of research and are 100% sure you think it will be worth it, then it is in your best interest to avoid this altogether.
This game felt like a low-budget project, and the lack of effort from the dev team was obvious. Overall, 5.1 out of 10.

Having support and specialist killstreak rewards is also a good improvement, IMO. The fact that gettign objectives done in addition to kills count towards killstreaks is nice, too.

Overall, this game is about what I was expecting. Multiplayer is fun and it is easy to sit down to play two quick matches and suddenly realize it's five hours later. There is a good variety of weapons and playing with different ones yields varying results, so there's probably something that all players can get used to using primarily. The promise of new maps is what is keeping me playing right now.

The only thing that drives me nuts is the juggernaut killstreak reward. It's BS.

This game is by far the worst game that Call of Duty has created. Infinity Ward should be ashamed by how this game came out. Game play has not changed since CoD 4 and the campaign did not live up to expectations in the slightest. In my opinion Infinity Ward should take every copy of this game to a skeeter shooting range and take a few hours to put a shotgun shell into every copy.

I lost all of my titles and embels that I had ganned and I also was stuck with 0 kills but 10000 deaths! I also was stuck after I got derancked with 0 wins but 1000 losses! I think this is way to horrible as a punishment for only using this glitch to get 10 custom classes! Not unlimited xp or unlocked everything, only to get 10 custom classes! Plus, if there banning me for doing this than everybody else that did is probably about to get screwed over aswell! About 50% of the people that I have ran into playing this game have done the glitch! 50% of the people that play this game! It might not be true but that is about what I have came up with for what I have seen so far. If they want to ban "about" 50% of the people that play this game, than thats there problem. Also, all the people that I have ran into that said they did this glitch have gone way overboard than me. Notice how I'm also saying GLITCH! Not a mod or a hack! I'm not boosting! Here's the definitions of a glitch: 1.A sudden, usually temporary malfunction or irregularity of equipment: "a computer glitch". 2.An unexpected setback in a plan; a hitch, a snag.

Notice how in the second definition it sais clearly," An UNEXPECTED setback." This glitch was unexpected! It was looked over when they were making this game! It's not my fault that Infinity Ward was probably slacking off when they were creating this part and they looked over it. I took advantage of their mistake! I didn't even use it that much either! I only used it to get 10 custom classes. Not double xp or the hardened or veteran package. I also didn't unlock any gear either! I only used 5 prestige tokens. I knew that if I over did it than I would probably have a chance of getting banned by these retards! I also kept my mouth shut about it aswell. They also could have patched the glitch aswell if they are getting this worried about it but no! Just ban and derank about 50% of the game or everyone that did it! Completely just lost a customer and I hope you loose every single person that plays this game! I hope you get such a crappy rating as what MW2 got and it looks like it already happend! The good thing about Treyarch is that instead of baning people they actualy put some work into the game and patch glitches! Worry about the booster and hackers before you worry about this crap! I was playing Free-for-All about 5 days before I got banned and I caught these three booster sitting in the back of the map with their tactical insersions just killing each other! The third person was guarding the cheesy booster not letting anyone get to them except for me who killed them onse! They still aren't banned! But they ban me for doing a simple glitch that I didn't even use that much of! Get your priorities straight before you get a bad rating! OH that's right , you already got a bad rating idiots! I will play blackops (a completely better game) and not touch your game once ever again! I hope people are with me and for all the haters! You have never got banned and don't know what it feels like to loose all your work that you just tried hard to get only because you did something small! If you read this whole message than I congradulate you for doing this. I shure wouldn't read this whole thing but I felt like it needed to get out there!

I believe this is the worst multiplayer in COD history. fourzerotwo promised a lot of changes and it got me excited. So I was very disappointed when none of those promises were kept, with exception they noobtubes were nefred, which made me mad, because they werent even that annoying. If someone chooses to go like 30-1 with one man army noobtubes, so be it, why should the commentators on youtube really affect what happens. All of the mw2 commentators complained about this, when they did themselves. I did it and thought it was fun. The graphics were not very good. I liked the high quality detail of black ops. This game was an overall disappointment, I thought that this game was going to be awesome and the best, but its basically mw2.5, I mean, theres not really that big of a difference really, same engine, same guns, same attachments, same developer, one was less fun and not worth $60 and your time.

MW3, you just kill Makarov, and for some reason, the developers wanted to kill off all the main characters on the way, which is lazy story telling IMO. But nobody plays this for the Singleplayer, and if you did/were going to get this for that (like I did); trust me, it's crap. MW3 is the more balanced game, and may be the most balanced COD title to date. The game has a bit more detail as far as graphics go. Less explosive damage is a welcome addition to MW3, as well as no commando. Nice weapon balance (apart from the Type 95, and the Striker). On a negative note, the maps are crap. They're the campiest maps ive ever played, and they are flat out boring aside from hardhat, village & dome. Lack of innovation, & poor map design drops my rating for this game to a 7. The main problems I have with this game and the reason why I've scored it a 6 is because of the multiplayer which is ironically what is most hyped part of the call of duty franchise. The problem is that it is extremely frustrating at times because other people will simply stay at the spawn areas and kill you off quickly or take advantage of the various glitches that are present within the games maps and the people with the weakest connection always seem to have the advantage due to lag shooting. Unfortunately, it's much worse than that. I'll start with maps, they're atrocious. They're randomly scattered, disgusting looks, dull, flat, and horribly small, actually I timed how long it takes to run around the biggest MW3 map to MW2 wasteland and favela. Wasteland was approx 2.5x bigger and favela was 1.3-5x bigger, pathetic. The perks, there are only 3 new ones, of which all are essentially useless and one, recon, was basically just copied off of rival Battlefield series. The other 2 are even very innovative and their pro versions are old perks. The guns, yes the guns are basically the same, but thats not what I'm complaining about because theyre based off real guns of which there are limited variants. Whats frustrating is the complete lack of balance, actually scratch that, theres balance in the fact that every gun kills in two shots except for a couple which are just useless. Also for some reason they decided to make machine pistols more powerful than most other guns in the game, really? The sniping is awkward to say the least, and I'm a sniper, it was my most used gun in every COD to date, even though you can zoom in faster, the way it does is honestly just odd and unweildy. Not to mention the snipers are just plain ugly. There are no new attachments except for the hybrid scope which doesnt count because its just combining two old attachments, the kill streaks are basically the same except for juggernaut which really is a stupid killstreak. But they decided to make the support strike package, a kill streak which doesnt reset when you die and has most of the best features, great idea sledgehammer... Because advanced UAV is in this package, if you hated ghost in BO youll die in MW3, with a blackbird up about 80-90% of the time and UAV 100%, assassin and blind eye are essential. Oh and finally the gamemodes, they added one new one, kill confirmed, which is my least favorite of them all including CTF... how has Call of Duty thought of 1 new game type in 5 years? I dont understand. The only reason I gave this a 1 is because the campaign is mildly entertaining and does bring everything together and once and for all end the game, however it is extremely cliche, predictable and uneventful, theres no mission that is distinct nor that I would replay several times such as the sniper missions/ ac-130 from COD 4 and multiple stealth/white house/ final mission of MW2. And lastly, it uses the same engine as COD 4, the best selling game in the world, it outsold harry potter... can't make a new engine, wow, just wow. Dont buy and if you already have, dont buy elite its pointless, go buy Skyrim, Batman, Halo CE anniversary, Rage, Gears 3, Battlefield 3, Dead Island, or wait for Mass Effect 3. With this plethora of great games this year why would one even consider MW3? Expand

Besides that, it plays so similar to MW2. There are no real changes to multiplayer. Yes they brought back death streaks, but those aren't new, and strike packages are just kill streaks with different rewards. The UI looks pretty much the same and they've actually reused old content. The lack of new or innovative content is pathetic. Survival is OK, I'll admit, but its certainly similar to zombies, but you're limited to 2 people, otherwise it all comes down to personal preference. The multiplayer is also pretty imbalanced. Most of the guns early on pale in comparison to later unlocks, and most shotguns and LMGs are pretty bad, except the last ones you unlock. I won't go into every imba gun, but there are a few and they all take time to get, which sucks. Campaign is OK, if linear, but that's pretty much what all FPS campaigns do nowadays.

To round it up: Multiplayer and PC version is sub-par, the only redeeming factors for the game is the story, if you've followed it or care, and spec ops, which is only really fun with friends.

Yes, most of the core mechanics remain the same, but underneath the illusion of it being just another CoD game lies a fantastic shooter. The campaign is probably the best Call of Duty campaign yet, with a gripping story, great levels and a ton of explosions to keep you occpupied all the way until the ending. Yes, it may be pretty linear, but I think that the best way to enjoy CoD campaigns is by thinking of it as an interactive movie, then you'll enjoy it best. Besides, it's a more than refreshing change from Black Ops' extremely dull campaign.

The multiplayer has experienced quite a few changes that improve it, such as reintroducing Deathstreaks and adding Strike Packages. While the multiplayer remains largely the same addictive action that we're all used to, Battlefield 3's is still a lot better.

Spec-Ops, on the other hand, brings us something more or less fresh: Survival Mode. While it follows the same basic principle as Zombies does (fight waves of attacking enemies that increasingly grow in size and power with a buddy), Survival Mode surprisingly emerges as the stronger component out of the two. Personally I hated Zombies; it got so repetitive struggling to kill these brainless enemies in a range of dull maps, only ever getting to something like Level 12 on my own. Survival Mode, however, can be as accessible as you like, as you instead fight off soldiers rather than the undead. Survival Mode is a deeper, more balanced experience.

Modern Warfare 3 doesn't change many of its core game mechanics, and its' multiplayer is not as good as Battlefield 3's, but as a shooter PACKAGE, this is one of the best.

MW3 does absolutely nothing to the FPS genre. Like what saltychipmunk said, sequels mean innovation. As far as innovation goes, this game is the pits. In fact, it is pretty much the same as MW2, (since I played it with a few buddies once), just with new guns and maps and perks. It would've been fine as DLC, but as a full-retail game, not so much.

I write this review to voice my opinion on the matter of this games technical quality, yet very poor user score. I personally will not rate this game high because like many of the others who have played or are currently playing MW3 after having played Modern Warfare 1 and 2, the game does not stand up. I can only imagine how a professional critic handles judging title after title, but II write this review to voice my opinion on the matter of this games technical quality, yet very poor user score. I personally will not rate this game high because like many of the others who have played or are currently playing MW3 after having played Modern Warfare 1 and 2, the game does not stand up. I can only imagine how a professional critic handles judging title after title, but I would assume it comes with some matter of detachment from the games they review. When I see Modern Warfare 3 I see what should be the sequel to Modern Warfare 1 and 2, not looking at it as a stand alone game but a continuation. My only guess is that a critic can review it highly as if it were a game of any other title, yet users stand firm in their belief that something is definitely not right . In the multiplayer game mode, veterans of MW will notice many similarities, but some basic game play tweaks that bring very odd changes to the modern warfare world. When crouched in every other game players can move silently to make stealth kills, adding a bit of strategy to what otherwise devolves into a mindless firefight. MW3, for whatever reason, had very audible movement sound no different than running when the player went prone or crouching when I played. A small change, but the first of many that most experienced fans of the series will notice. Weapons feel familiar but where every other game made them feel unique, I only felt slight differences between many of them in terms of how they handle and shoot. The look of the weapons seemed to take precedence over balance and polish. Not many may notice such a change, buy a lot of fans of MW series can automatically tell something is wrong. Some weapons are even unusable for the purpose that they were intended, a few of the side arms in particular. Almost everything about playing the game seems to indicate that flash and flair, along with some advertising for firearms manufacturers, was the primary focus. This is the only way I can justify a side arm being pulled up to fire, but instead being treated to a 2 second animation of the already loaded weapon getting the magazine put back in. The small time frame of being vulnerable may seem petty to some, but a quick draw is the main reason for having such a side arm. After dying more times than I can count during the pretty magazine flair, I had to learn two things: to never use that particular gun again, and that 2 seconds in a fast paced FPS means a lot more than you might think. The single player campaign fairs better than the multiplayer, but still suffers from the rest. The many user reviews of the story feeling stale or uninspired do not lie, and many of the 'twists and surprises' of the story feel predictable and some even come off as cheap. Where previous titles may change the player from different persona to another on occasion, MW3 feels like it uses this character swap as a plot point, changing characters in such a way that it seemed entirely unjustified or even boring at times. It became hard to care about some of the cast after a while, part of the player thinking they'll just swap to another persona after a few minutes and will never see them again anyway. This among other plot turns made it difficult for myself and others to really get into the story the same way we did with MW2 and the first Modern Warfare in particular. The game itself is not terrible, but then again I am not a professional critic. The game as a sequel is very off putting, and old time fans of modern warfare will notice very obvious and strange changes, ones that make the gamer question their methods and thought process when making the game. I can only attribute the subtle tone of change to the fact that the studio Infinity Ward (IW) lost a good chunk of their senior staff when there was a falling out between Activision and then heads of IW, leading to two original founders of IW to be fired. Shortly after, a handful of senior employees and friends of the two followed in their footsteps which has led to a void in the company that has yet to be filled nor may ever be. These all feel like lessons well learned during the development of the first two games in the series (excluding all of the other CoD games, in which similar lessons must also have come up) and I can only imagine they are surfacing now due to the dramatic change in development and production the series has been put through. I would like to say that IW having a lot of their original staff moving on didn't change the quality of the franchise any, but I would be lying if I did. As a stand alone game of a different title, perhaps the user score would better match the critics. But as a sequel to a beloved series, the game fails all the loyal fans who came to expect a certain polish and refinement that Modern Warfare became known for. TL:DR The best way I can justify giving this game a 0 is as such, I bought MW3 and played it. I sold it, and now play MW2. Expand

    1) Claustraphobia/Poor Maps - the maps are all claustrophobic, have few if any interesting cover/sniper points, rarely anything you can climb on etc. It's as if they were designed in 15 minutes with no regard for anything. To make matters worse, spray cannon weapons can be accurate with the new anti-kick weapon specialization, almost eliminating the use of precision high damage weapons like sniper rifles. Anything resembling a snipers nest is easily accessible from 3 different directions guaranteeing you will get snuck up on and killed after 1 or 2 kills. 2) Widespread hacking - not IW's fault but a lot of people are using wall hacks that tell where enemies are behind walls. These are not blatant hacks, but ones that make people look like they are playing legitimately until you watch their kill cam and see them tracking people perfectly through walls. 3) Poor netcode - perhaps not as bad or Black ops (or about as bad) this game uses the noob friendly netcode where you will often find yourself getting killed AFTER you run behind cover, or killed BEFORE the person who is shooting you even comes around the corner on your screen. Generally speaking, just a noobified version of call of duty.

People who buy this game are putting passionate game developers out of business, and preventing us 'real gamers' from having games made with the creativity and care that we crave.

I cannot finish the single player because the levels are not fun, and they feel like a task that I NEED to complete just for the achievements. Same exact thing with spec ops mode, I feel like I need to beat all the levels just for that achievement score. Nothing more. Also, I am aware most of the people working on the game got laid off, and I feel sorry for those people, but, to put it simply, there are crews of 10 or less people who make much better games, in a shorter amount of time. It can't be that hard to put a new skin on MW2, because that's what this game is. Expand

To set things straight, Modern Warfare 3 is not Modern Warfare 2.5. Modern Warfare 3 is indeed quite similar to Modern Warfare 2, but there are significant improvements. As with every Call of Duty game the visuals are fantastic. The physical graphics of the game look spectacular, standing to par with the top newest games with the exception of perhaps a game such as Battlefield 3. The frame rate is smooth as with every other COD game, but what sets MW3 apart from MW2 is that the set pieces at least appear larger, and there was clearly a higher emphasis on large scale battles with the amount of memorable sequences. Game play for MW3 is nearly identical to MW2 but with a new additions: Survival mode; missions in both the campaign, and Spec. Ops where you are the infamous Juggernauts; an unmanned, remotely controlled ground vehicle with a mini gun, and grenade launcher; and of course, a plethora of new weapons to play with. Now while there is some good, there is also some bad: the game play is very repetitive; as with every COD there is a large amount of players on-line who simply take COD far too seriously, ruining the experience of others; and while the story is epic, due to the fact that the two lead developers in Infinite Ward have been laid off, a great deal of the feel, and emotion behind COD has diminished, making the action sequences less engaging, and less heart stopping then the other MW games.
Now to score the game a 6 is fair. Why so many individuals are rating the game a 0 is ridiculous and childish. To give it a 0 means that the game would not be playable at all, that it burns your eyes out, and u lose when u press start. On the other hand to rate it an 8 of higher is also ridiculous as to give it that score would mean the game has new exciting features that grip you and pull you in, and anything that was perfected before is still perfect. Because the scale is 1-10, that means that a 5 is average. Not bad, not good, but average. MW3 is slightly better then average as all COD games have been. Why everyone is ripping on the game and giving it 0!!!! is beyond me. Its childish, its ridiculous, and its not showing a fair representation to the game.

I have played the CoD games since CoD 2. If I had to say the most disappointing game in the CoD series, it would be this game. Anyway, when I put the game into the disk, I was shocked. I was greeted by the startup screen: the same exact one in CoD MW2. I played the storyline a bit, and then I played the Multiplayer. The story was so easily predictable. Even the trailer gives out some spoilers! The first thing I was greeted by in Multiplayer was a 5 year-old screaming. He then argued with his mother about playing the game. Ugh, kids these days. I then chose the gun I wanted and then, BAM! I was spawn-camped by a level 56 gamer. I then left the game and I was looking for another game. I found a game and I noticed a guy magically headshotting my team. I then realized the game is horrible. Much better than I expected. The Multi-Player is top-notch and so is the new Survival Mode. Spec. Ops is back with a lot of improvements, haven't played enough of it to know what they are though. Sadly, I completed the Single-Player Campaign in 4 hours (on Recruit. Sad, I know.... XD). Even in MW2 the Single-Player Campaign was 8-12 hours on Recruit!!!! That's a big disappointment!

I borrowed this game from a friend to "test the waters" before I went out to buy it, and I'm glad I did. I'll start of with the campaign. Me personally, I didn't like campaign at all. It seemed to be made for children with severe ADHD because it's filled with constant explosions, unnecessary violence and you become desensitized to the whole experience quickly. I shot down 6 helicopters in the first half hour of playing the campaign, and because of that it's really hard to feel any speck of sympathy when something unfortunate happens to one of the main characters who you've followed since MW1. But that's not the only thing wrong with the campaign, the enemies still don't know how to cover properly, the friendly's who are supposed to help you don't do much other than get in the way of your firing line and the story doesn't make any sense what so ever so you'll be playing for the sake of playing it. Also they've implemented the ideas which I loathed so much from Black ops, like the slow motion scenes which ruined the pace and is just an unnecessary playable cut scene and a desperate attempt to make the campaign longer. Now next up is the graphics. If you played the first modern warfare, compared it to modern warfare 3, you won't be able to notice any real significant changes. It's 2012 soon and looking at games like Battlefield 3, skyrim, or even gears of war 3, you'll see what you're missing out on, and console limitations is no excuse. Now for the multiplayer. Multiplayer has more or less the same basic concepts as the previous games including the same problems as before but they've changed the whole idea of killstreaks. It's now called "Strike Packages". And you get a choice of 3. Assault is the standard, get as many kills without dying to get rewarded we're all used to. Support is get as many kills as you can before the game ends without your kill count being reset to 0 when you die. And specialist is the same as assault but you unlock perks as your rewards. Now if you play multiplayer for an hour you'll realise how unbalanced the multiplayer now is. You can forget about specialist as you'll always feel left out when everyone else is calling in a heavily armed robot or predator missiles and getting a bunch of kills in one go. Sniping is still as poor as the previous games due to the maps being small, tight and the same altitude you have to resort to quickscoping. You can't "quickscope" in real life, so you shouldn't be forced to quickscope in a military game when you're not used to it. Forget about hardscoping you'll never get a kill that way because you'll always be too close to the enemy and dead before you can even fire the second shot. But that isn't the only problem. Spawn killing is still as bad as it was, the maps are insanely small and tight leaving you to lone wolf, meaning playing with friends impossible because you'll have no choice but to separate and go your own way anyway. Also, if you didn't buy this game on day 1, forget about multiplayer because too many people have found the blind spots for camping in every map and you'll be put in the same games as players who've prestige'd 4 times over by now. I don't know about you but getting killed over and over by barely taking 4 steps forward after respawning isn't my definition of fun.
Now if you're looking for new original "killstreaks", you'll be disappointed. Most of the rewards are copied from previous games. For example the "advanced UAV" is just a nerfed version of the blackbird from Black ops. I thought this was supposed to be set in the near future? Why does a game set during the Vietnam war have a more powerful killstreak than the "advanced UAV" here? It's just poor and unimaginative, and you can tell they're running out of ideas.

All in all, I'm not impressed at all. I agree with many people that this game should have been modern warfare 2. If you never played a COD game before, I'd say this is probably worth your time. But if you own black ops or MW2, or even MW1 look elsewhere. This is just a low budget scheme by Activision to milk the name as much as they can.

Let's not be blinded by all the negative feedback. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a good game. It's not a industry changing game but it is a good game. The story is worth experiencing. The multiplayer is addicting but the formula is little different from Call of Duty 4 which is 4 years and 4 games later. The survival isn't anything that hasn't been seen before. Just looking at the emblem and call sign page, we can see that half of the emblems and title backgrounds were either COPY/PASTED FROM MW2 or an edited version of a previous graphic. It's as if Infinity Ward knew that just by slapping the COD title on the front of the box meant that they didn't even have to try or do anything new, because it would still sell - and it did sell. A lot. As a big Call of Duty fan, I can say I'm effectively disappointed beyond words. Do yourself a favor and trade this in for Battlefield 3 - the far superior FPS - and tell all of your friends to not buy it. In my opinion, yes the game is not very fresh, but surely if you already have an award winning game, why make it worse? Yet by keeping it similar, they have. The game is very similar to MWF2, however the feel of the game is a bit different. Firstly, the maps do make it more flowing, as promised, which does make the game a bit more exciting, but really recycled weapons and a small handful editions don't deliver enough. Furthermore, the mechanics on the game need a serious revamp. It feels like its trying to be realistic, and then it just slaps you in the face in certain parts with its un realism. One of the more popular aspects of the game jumps to mind, I am referring, of course, to quick scoping. Unfortunately it is a big chunk of the problem with the game, because it is so popular. There is nothing realistic about quick scoping, or in fact the way sniping is done in game. Most of the elements of the sniper rifle need to be looked at a lot. Also, we were promised 'more equal weapons' so people wouldn't just choose the UMP45 silenced and win. On most counts, they have made fairly equal weapons, yet some of them just jump out as being far too powerful, or far too weak. To name 1, the FMG9, akimbo with steady aim is a near unbeatable combination, and sucks a lot of the fun away from the game when faced with an opponent using them. Another aspect of the game, and one of the most horrendous is knifing. I don't know what happened between MWF2 and this, but knifing has just failed miserably. The complete inconsistency of this mechanic makes it un-usable, and it is suicide to even attempt knifing someone. There are no shining qualities of this game that make me feel amazed by it, there are some good ones, like flowing maps and new game modes (Kill confirmed) that make the game bare-able, but if you are looking to play a good multi-player first person shooter, go and buy Modern Warfare 2. Are you guys seriously this pissed off a game? I can't believe that after all the time you had to research this game some of you still bought it and are now complaining. I wouldn't mind if people didn't like this game but I can say that the ONLY reason people are this angry towards Infinity Ward is because of CoD: Black (crap) Ops. Treyarch provided "relief" to the FPS community that in my opinion was utter crap. Sure Modern Warfare 3 didn't push the limits but when you're trying to end a franchise there is little you can do. People complain at how the MW3 graphics look just like CoD4. Have you seen Crap Ops? It's horrendous. Even the cinematic scenes were so bad that i'd put it on par with PS2 games that had really nice graphics for it's time. MW3 at least had the decency to make smooth out the edges, the ambiance is the same sure but the character models are great to look at. I just wished they kept third-person so I could enjoy them.

As for multi-player, they fixed everything that the whiners back then were **** about and these babies still cry. It goes to show you that the FPS community has taken a lot of steps back since CoD4 and I still put the blame on Crap Ops. MW3 took out things gamers didn't like such as one man army and the strength of grenades. What did Craps Ops do? Put money in their multi-player and player cards. It is hilarious how Treyarch was "shocked" that players would make offensive images with the playercards. I wish I could believe they were oblivious but I think they were that dumb.

MW3 at least fixed that moronic idea of CoD bucks and made you level up your gun rather than having money. Having to manage your money and your XP was just dumb as hell. At least with the gun leveling system gamers could actually focus on gun challenges and get a rewards for doing so.

Another thing which isn't a fix but i'm happy they kept were gun physics. People say the gun physics are terrible and it sound effects are awful. Two things the sound was fixed to not give people with turtlebeaches an ungodly advantage over everyone else. And second the physics are as good as any FPS should be. In Crap Ops the bullets would literally go at the speed of light, sure bullets are fast but not to a point that it will hit someone instantly.

I read from a user about how this game didn't have zombies. I'm sorry if Infinity Ward doesn't like being a scam by ripping of another developers idea. Plus they revamped the Spec. Ops mode PLUS a survival mode. Like it or not I give IW a thunderous applause for at least trying something different which couldn't be said about the zombies in Crap Ops that only added more strange and annoying features to zombies, because I love some ghost stealing my crap or even zombie monkeys. Regardless zombies is far from any other zombie game. If you want to play a game about zombie then get a game about zombies. They're take is so bland with zombies just overrunning you. Nazi zombies stops being a fun game mode and turns into a game where you make a well-drawn out plan with no room for error that ends up in a botched attempt as you yell at the one guy who screwed up.

I could go on for ages but there's a character limit so i'll touch on my final point, single-player. Single player is amazing plain and simple. IW did a marvelous job in taking the story of CoD4 and linking it all together focusing on the face of evil, Makarov. Makarov is by far one of the greatest villians and even if you don't like the game or the story you could analyze Makarov by himself and say he was a BAMF. It definitely blew Crap Ops out of the water. What was the villian in that game? The stereotypical communist jerk-off who brainwashed people? Seriously brainwashing? That so cool that Treyarch implied that you were the shooter on the grassy knoll, oh come on! That is one of the dumbest ideas i've seen and that's just in the first game. I'm an atheist but I pray to god to make sure another abortion like the single-player of Craps Ops never appears again. In conclusion MW3 is a good game (not the greatest!) and only gets a 10 from me because some people are so sensitive like the little 12 year old kids they make fun of online and gave this game a zero for no legitimate reason other than their stubbornness. If Crap Ops had never existed and MW3 came out right off the bat you people would have loved this game. Maybe in a parallel universe Treyarch never existed and I count those people lucky and bless them and all the other people who take a stand against the mindless masses. If you want to fight about it then bring it on, and i'm not talking about internet fight. I want a real fight because if you're gonna talk this much trash then get ready to fight for what you believe in, but I guess you guys are cowards

What I do not like is that your computer can become a dedicated server, in which case, I started getting pummeled every time on mutiplayer. In fact, I've been right about 90% of the time when I rage quit and discover that I was the host. Seriously, I pay a good amount of money for these games, GET US SOME DEDICATED SERVERS! There is no excuse for this crap!

Aside from that, multiplayer delivers, although not on a large scale like BF3. Although I absolutely f-ing hate BF3 after playing that glitchy, crappy game for the last 3 weeks, it does have a big edge on MW3's small multiplayer maps. If you took MW and it's software engine and applied the concept of BF3 to it, the game would be unstoppable. But as it is, BF3 sucks and MW3 is still a good game.

Absolute rubbish! Patches do nothing to improve it! Multiplayer is poor. lag, campers, overpowered shot guns, bad hit detection, hackers, aimbots! List goes on and on! I'm never buying a CoD game ever again, RIP CoD!!! The dev's really dont care unless they are making $$$$$

Failed to deliver great new maps (compared to MW2), fluid controls (compared to Black Ops) or exciting new gameplay. Shotguns failed big time and so did survival mode. They don't even care about cleaning Xbox360 leaderboards from all the hackers. Quite possibly the last CoD from IW/SH I will buy.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
