Call of Duty seems to have an inverse relationship between sales and gameplay. The better the sales, the more basic the gameplay. Gone are the expansive maps that offered strategic gameplay. There is not even a need for sniper rifles in the multiplayer because the maps are boxed off into small areas. I'm going to take a pass on the next one. The game is just overhyped and over marketed. I purchased 3 of the elite versions because 2 of my sons and I used to like playing multiplayer with each other. It's good for running and gunning but that gets boring on these maps. I also think that Activision's money grab is going to force future releases to require external activation like the elite to bypass XBOX Live. That was a complete disaster and ruined my experience. It was a real hardship to register and I couldn't for a month. What did Activision do? Give an extra 30 days, no consideration for the grief of their customers. They should have given 90 days or an equivalent compensation. This forces me to give them a goose egg. I still feel bitter about it. Expand

I love COD yet I honestly find MW3 is just disappointing. While it doesn't deserve an F, it never reaches the heights of MW3. The campaign, while intense, is just full of cliches and plotholes that make no sense. If the Russian president is traveling over for a peace treaty, who gave the order for Russia to invade Europe? Also what's the point of showing a child die? War is bad? That's already been expressed a billion times and it doesn't further the plot unlike the nuke and massacre in MW1 & 2. Given the new standards in storytelling set by shooters like Blops and Bioshock, COD should provide both a good story AND good shooting gameplay. The multiplayer feels a bit better and has an interesting pointstreak system yet it's a bit stifled as there's no match making for gun games and infection mode. Also the Juggernaut pointstreaks are too powerful because they have both regenerative health AND near-impenetrable bull**** armor. The Treyarch's creative run-and-gun zombies mode is replaced with a boring cover-based survival mode. Listen devs, the reason why zombies was well loved because it was a refreshing change of pace that offered some old-school fun reminiscent of that of Painkiller. It's not horrible, but if feels like the lazy combo of multiplayer gameplay and maps with single player enemies. The environments appear as if smothered in a grayish wallpaper paste vomit and the original dev team and Hans Zimmer are all gone. This game is more obligation than inspiration. If it were a $30 expansion pack, I would've tolerated it, but MW3 is just underwhelming. It's like RE5, the game I love is in here, but its creative spark is gone and it's not amazing. Expand

By the end of this year we will have 17 or 18 Call of Duties... They will come out with A PS Vita version too, they are comming out with Black Ops 2, Pretty soon you wont know which Call of Duty came out first... Why don't all games just be called Call of Duty? Pretty soon you will buy a different game, and Call of Duty will be in the box.... there's no escaping Call of Duty. Activison is ruining the gaming industry, and you guys are letting them... How about we have a kinect version aswell? Call of Duty needs to die, and if it doesn't we probably will have another videogame crash, like we did a long time ago when E.T came out for the Atari... Everyone should take there CoD games and fly them to a hidden desert and bury it. Better yet, how about we take all C0D games and spend a few billion dollars and fly them into the sun. I'm guessing that wouldn't work either, the sun would get sick of playing C0D all the time too and explode... Mark my words... I bet when everyone gets tired of Call of Duy..Activison will keep making them, but call it something else. From now on they should just call it Re-call of Duty... And on the box it should say " Now with more of the same" 2 weeks later out comes Re-call of Duty 2 Pink Ops. And Super Call of Duty brothers. Expand

Game's been the same and never ever changed, do yourself a favor and do not buy this game. It's filled with children, rehashed content, the only thing that changes from game to game are the perk, maps, and killstreak. Even the weapons are just re-skins because they never introduce something new.

Lots of us who have given it a bad score have said what many others can't. Our opinions!!!! It shocks me how you can say that it has improved. A 10 year old can think of some guns and kill streaks. Now for the single player. What a muddled mess this is. A sheep could predict, the storey soap dies and you kill makerov. This is more like DLC MW2 or MW2.5. No effort put in at all. And it is so sad that in 2 years time 10 million more people will go and buy it just because it has Call of Duty or MW in the title it upsets me to be honest. I will never fall for it again.

MW3 continues it's already bland story by spicing things up with an old threat with a new plan to destroy the world. With that said, let's look at the campaign. 'This game delivered no shocks, no surprises that I haven't seen before or anticipated. At least in MW2 'No Russian' was a shocking thing to play through. And of course CoD4 had the nuke explosion. The campaign was lackluster and under prepared. It felt rushed and like with all CoD campaigns now, you have no earthly clue what's going on. Single player gets a 1/10 because it did bring everything full circle and now maybe Infinity Ward can get back on track to making a great single player experience. Multiplayer was just as awful as MW2. It's become an arcade game with horribly overpowered guns and people that make use of the ability to camp 24/7. The maps aren't all that enjoyable to play on and they don't feel like new environments that I enjoy from video games. I get that it's hard to build on past success but Infinity Ward has really let itself go by appeasing to the masses with their multiplayer experience. Multiplayer gets a 0/10. I'm glad people are finally realizing that this series has gone down the hole from it's glory days, but as long as it has a Call of Duty title, it will make MILLIONS of dollars. An Expand

The only thing about this game that might be worth paying any attention towards are the Spec Ops missions and the newly added survival mode (which is essentially the same as Treyarch's Zombies installment). Even then, only a hand full of the Spec Ops missions are interesting enough to hold my attention, mainly because they feel like a pain to even do in the first place. The missions should be creative and "outside of the box", so to speak, but they end up feeling like a household chore instead. The multiplayer is the same as always, and a predictable storyline throughout the campaign really spoils most of the excitement for player. So all you get with MW3 is a stale and half-assed attempt at a game, with one of it's newest feature (Survival Mode) being a stolen and spent game type made famous by Treyarch. Not one thing about this is new or original! The original MW was a breakthrough, it had great story and gameplay, what I didn't expect however was that same game to be released again two years later with litle more than a texture pack and some campaign DLC. Considering this my attitude to MW2, imagine my surprize when the thinking caps down at Activision went into over drive and made MW3. Once again all I can say is wow thats a nice texture pack and DLC. Fair enough the mutiplayer is fun, but its no different from the first two. The only thing worth a penny in the call of duty series right now is the Zombies mini-game, considering a lack of that in this title to me it is worthless. For some reason everyone runs much faster and stiffer which leads to choppy almost lag like movement that you have to aim at when trying to shoot your opponent I used to hate modern warfare 2 because of the same reasons but i recently went back and played modern warfare 2 and it actually plays better. Overall this game is extremely bad and in my opinion it has ruined the franchise. I have decided to never by another call of duty. The critics need to play the game under regular average player conditions to give more accurate reviews because i cannot understand why they graded this game so absurdly high. Its so sad really since the first modern warfare was so balanced and solid. it was so near to perfection that everyone just kept buying the sequels. But guess what? This isn't call of duty 4. I love the COD franchise, I appreciate what it's done for gaming as a whole and I totally respect the numbers it puts up yearly. This game does not deserve a 1 or a 3 because it IS a good game. However....with a few exceptions it is the same formula year in and year out.

After 2 days worth of gaming in the MP I can honestly say I don't know why I buy these games yearly, it's clear to me

Disappointed, same old game, which is good, but with far less modes to play with, compared to last years cod's, I only recommend it to hardcore Call of Duty fans or 1st person shooters gamers. If you are not one of these, you may as well stay away from it and play something else.

Ok lets face it, MW1 was a great game, but enough is enough. Selling the same game with new maps every year for 6 years killed this series. Ive been a fan since call of duty 1 (way before MW1) and i feel there is no creativity in this game anymore. Zero innovation. Great job Activision you just fragged another great game.

This game is just terrible. It's basically a DLC for MW2 that costs $60. The guns are terrible, the maps suck, the spawns don't make sense and every gun has Instakill built in. Everyone camps for killstreaks and no one plays the objective, it's sad to see what has happened to the call of duty franchise. Hopefully, Treyarch can improve these problems in Black Ops 2.

It is very obvious this game was rushed out of the gate from day 1 and it is pretty evident from a couple of things like the fact that the model shotgun has an attachments proficiency even though it has no attachments to begin with. Another thing why is there no hardcore free for all when it was such a fan favorite in previous titles, and why did the hardcore team death match not have ricochet (where you can't kill your team mates) from the start when in Black ops they finally decided to add it to stop people from team killing the whole game. Why has it taken so long for them to get Elite up and running like they said they would in regards to clan competitions. Aside from these problems MW3 is one of the most polished shooters on the market and fans of the series will feel right at home. I would just like to see a map pack with more than 1 or 2 maps in it, I know they spread it out so Elite members would feel like they are getting something every month like they promised but even with releasing 1 or 2 maps a month the game is starting to feel stale quick. The campaign was alright if not a bit hard to follow but I defiantly wasn't as impressed with it as I was in the previous two. It is time for us to take a stand as gamers and demand innovation because if they keep selling more of the almost the same game every time they would be stupid to stop. Why improve a game when they can slap a fresh paint of coat on it and break even more sales records than the one before. How about releasing a map pack with 5 favorites from older versions just a sign of good faith to the audience that has supported them from day 1, I think its an insult to people who bought elite to say sorry we haven't made Elite the experience we promised but thanks for your fifty bucks here's a prestige token. The thing is why try to support a game right when you already have the next 5 games to be released underway to be shipped in under a year. Expand

While I won't get into spoilers, it basically wraps up the story fans of the other Modern Warfare titles are sure to enjoy. The multiplayer adds some new features, but all in all it is still the same old game. I honestly got bored with it faster than previous Call of Duty's simply because I've already had the experience with it in the past. While it is fun and easy to lose some hours into, it's easy to say that the FPS genre popularity (at least for me) is slowly declining. The Spec Ops is definitely a step up from Modern Warfare 2's. With missions to do, and survival it is sure to keep you entertained for a while with one other friend. By yourself, however, it may be a little bit easier to get bored quicker. The unlock and ranking system is unique and very different from the previous title. But looking deeply into it, it does get repetitive. Go kill some hostiles and collect something of importance, or defend an area. The survival mode on the other hand has different difficulties which adds to the pizazz of the overall game. Once again it is much better and I highly recommend playing with one friend (2 player co-op) so you have more fun with it. Overall, Modern Warfare 3 is a good game and could have been a lot better, minus all the repetitive and perhaps an enhanced multiplayer with even more changes. Expand

Spec Ops is some what entertaining, but it will not be the mode you play the most and will probably only play it once or twice and get tired of it.
New single player, but most people buying first person shooters aren't looking for single player, and mainly looking for multiplayer to play with your friends.
What isn't new? Well, I have seen a lot of similar guns in the past Call of Duty.
The maps are very similar, and for some reason every time I get in one, I feel like I have played it numerous times before on a previous CoD.
The graphics are obviously not new, which this may be good in your case if you have a bad graphics card and can not handle games like Skyrim. In my case, it is bad.
The sounds of the guns are not that great, sounds in general isn't that great.

Back to what is new subject, I doubt they put $60 worth of effort into a new single player (which not many people care about), a new game mode which could be coded easily, and a few new guns.
My advise is just wait until Modern Warfare 3 goes to a lower price.

They robbed me from my money, but I will make sure not to buy another one.

The only reason this CoD community has continued on, is from all the middle school kids having their friends play it, so they want to play it and believe it is a good game worth getting.

Final point; If you are 15+ I would suggest you go get another first person shooter because you will not enjoy the community in CoD games, constant kids yelling and screaming, not a good community.
If you are a 8-14 age, I suggest you should get this because you would probably enjoy it.

The 5-hour campaign is terrible designed, as you just shoot your way through different sizes and shapes of corridors, streets and other environment that is filled with lots and lots of enemies. No flanking, no tactic, just rushing through endless enemy-waves, what constantly gets interrupted by the usual badass slow-mos. You have a hard time following the plot, but when you do, it's just a unreasonable story that could have been written by a class of 11-year olds. The kind of audience, that is obviously trying to be attracted here.
Multiplayer is very demotivating, because you feel just like prestige-ing in MW2. Most weapons, callsigns, killstreaks are in the same order, with the same way of achieving them. Maps as well as the weapons all "feel" the same. They seem to have tried too hard to balance everything, that now there is nothing special about either of them.
Spec-Ops is the best out of every playable mode, but that really isn't such a big compliment. It's fun to play, but once you are through, you are done with it. Survival-mode is unfair and complete randomly added.
If I would have to make a conclusion... Take the chocolate ice-cream that MW1 was, add some sparkles from MW2, and now take a huge pile of **** and mix it. Now you have MW3.

Most of the people that bought it, bought MW2, BO, and MW3 for the hype. MW2 wasn't too bad, but it was horribly unbalanced. Black Ops wasn't unbalanced THAT MUCH but it did have game breaking flaws and I got bored with it after a few weeks. MW3 though...sad but true, this game DOES NOT live up to the hype. The store isn't as good as the previous ones, survival doesn't feel to be such a big change and this could of been DLC for MW2 for $15. The multiplayer...how can I say this? Well...it's not what we all expected. It's not unbalanced as MW2, but it's more unbalanced than Black Ops. The spawn system, after YEARS, is still horrible. The weapons overall are still as easy and powerful as ever. Most, if not all, have perfect accurate and little to no recoil. If you want a challenge, Modern Warfare 3 won't give it to you. The killstreaks, now called point streaks, are unbalanced as well. Some are horrible and require a ridiculously high amount of kills/points to obtain. Some are just TOO DAMN GOOD and TOO DAMN EASY to obtain. You still have the typical Call of Duty players as well. Half of the players will be trying to do 360 no scopes and trick shots or half of the players will be camping on a dark corner. The map design is just bad. Horrible. The sound design is just as bad. You feel like you're shooting a stapler and not a weapon. The game doesn't promote as much teamwork as I thought it would. There's more, but not enough. 70-80% of the players still just go for the kills and don't care about the objective. There's also no dedicated servers. Hundreds of millions of dollars, but yet they can't make dedicated servers. This is how lazy and careless the makers of this franchise are.

I think the worst thing in the game, well in the series, is the community. It makes me want to puke. The game is supposed to be M for mature and not K for kiddy land. Half of the players are little kids, one third are complete jerks and, excuse my language, complete **** I know every game is bound to have them, but wow. Call of Duty has the worse fanbase in gaming.

I do play the game once or twice a week, but I'd rather be playing previous Call of Duty titles simply because they added more punch for your buck even though they had an enormous amount of game breaking flaws.

This game is NOT Mw2.5, but it's NOT Mw3. I give it a 6/10. Does not live up to the hype, developers are lazy and greedy, map design and sound design are horrible, unbalanced, good story line but not better than the previous, slightly more balanced than Mw2 but still unbalanced, community is horrible and last but not least, Call of Duty Elite. Now you can see how greedy these guys are.

I notice that they've done a good job of making the game fairer for everyone, which is why the 'good' players are getting unhappy because they don't win all the time. I like the class setups, and how you can have different killstreaks assigned to different classes; nice touch there. However I'm not a huge fan of the failure that is 'extreme conditioning'. Yes I understand no-one can have unlimited sprint realistically, but the amount of sprint extreme conditioning gives is pathetic! I would like to see this buffed up a bit. Also MW3 lacks a few great features from Black Ops, for example combat training: a great way to play the game and enjoy it because you can just set it to easy and relax, and also it's good for those who suffer from terrible internet (e.g Me)! Also Black Ops had way more ways to customise custom game modes, for example you could edit perks' effects, which was awesome.
Overall this game is good, all the singleplayer is fairly mediocre, they've done a good job of making multiplayer more equal, but the game just lacks that snappiness, that edge that MW2 had which made the gameplay so much faster and action-packed.

The story wasn't emotional like Call of Duty 4 nor full of 'oh my God' moments like in Modern Warfare 2 (aside from the massive building getting blown up here and there) and I just didn't care in the end. Environments were bland and monotonous, but as said before, I can't deny that it was fun.
After Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer was where the Call of Duty series was at. Following past Call of Duty titles, Modern Warfare 3 seems to try to push everything from the singleplayer campaign to the multiplayer in the form of killstreaks, which are as crazy as ever. The multiplayer mode was addictive and I found myself enjoying new modes like Kill Confirmed, but being a PC Battlefield player I found the fact that you don't know where the enemy is half the time and the constant sprinting annoying (I've never not known where the enemy is or needed to sprint for really long distances that much in Battlefield 3 on the PC). However, the multiplayer was a step up from Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, though it failed to improve on Call of Duty 4 chiefly because of all the gimmicks that as well as being useless were sometimes discouraging. Whenever I got a deathstreak I always thought 'I must be going badly', and I started dying even more.
So to sum it all up, Modern Warfare 3 is worth a bit of your time, but if you have a decent PC then I'd go with Battlefield 3.

Cod 2 was exciting it had a new engine and looked great, cod 3 was adding new things to the game, like sprint and updated multiplayer. Cod4 comes out and its simply amazing, the campaign was fantastic story was gripping and the multiplayer was a stand alone feat! then Cod WaW was just getting better! it added a new co-op mode where you could play parts of the campaign online co-op! it had all the same multiplayer with updates to it to make it better for the players, and finally it had Zombies which is one of the biggest things Cod has ever had a series...now this may just be me...but it went downhill from here. Mw2 is released to one of the biggest mass audiences ever, it came out amaizingly well the story was gripping and full of twists and turns. the multiplayer was updated for more arcade and less realistic but funner, you could hop on and feel like you did something, the co-op was gone in zombies and campaign but it was still there for spec-ops where you try to do different things so you can complete objectives but the problem was it was rushed. where cod 4 and waw had had about 4 years to be made mw2 had only 2 years. this ment that there were glitches. lots of glitches. it had overpowered shotguns that kill in 1 hit from 20 feet, the rpgs with the huge 30 foot explosive kill radius, dual glocks with overpowered it was horrendous to all who saw it. people began to turn away from Cod, and this was bad. Blackops. This game added so much to the series. it had its own type no visuals game in it, a updated zombies mode, their was an online where you could challenge people for money to use to buy new items. you had a money system where you didnt have to work to upgrade a gun or rank up to a perk you just buy them and customization was at an all time high. there were about 100 gun camos, emblems were completely customizable, the red dot sights on guns were customizable too! it had an offline mode where you could fight aginist Bots and rank up there, and it added a theater mode where you could watch old games and even a new ability to have 2 people play online from the same xbox/ps3!. it even had a new top down acrade game! now while the graphics were getting only slowly better there were only a few good leaps and mw2/bo had them. even black ops added an new movement ability! you could swan dive around places! it was good fun and it felt like a new game. mw3. let me level with you all i am probably biased about this game but its with good reason. you see how all the other games had updates and added more to the game the thing is mw3 didnt. it changed the multiplayer in only small tweaks, like killstreaks per class now but thats all i can really see. it actually took most customization away like most camos, red dots, and customization for emblems in favor of mw2 style. the graphics had not changed the story was solid but most of them are in cod games, the co-op was only the same spec ops but it had a new ranking system for the new gametype called "survival" which was basically zombies but people had guns. it is fun and changes a lot but not completely original or that fun when multiplayer comes looming about. the multiplayer maps are not diverse, they are more of the same, the guns feel really bad and not realistic, not much updating but enough to show a little something. thats just how the game is and i do not see how it can truly be considered to be a new game. it is merely an expansion pack. thats all i see. if you have any other opinions thats for you but this is how i see the series as a whole. black ops 2 will hopefully save cod. I have no time at all for the Treyarch entries and never have done but I've always been curious about what the next Modern Warfare game would be like (although I expected virtually nothing new at all).
I expected to hate it, then somebody bought it for me as a Christmas present. I just finished the campaign and I have to say that even though it still feels like Call Of Duty 4 (in every single way), I was somewhat satisfied with it. I enjoyed how the story continued from the previous games and it helped me kill a few hours.

However I have to say that the multiplayer is exactly what I expected and worse; a montage of complete chaos; requiring virtually zero skill, poor (and repetitive) voiceovers, yet more messy killstreak (or 'pointstreak') rewards and pathetically dated animation (try and watch another player sprint, without laughing out loud). In general it feels like the multiplayer experience has gone backwards since COD4, if anything.

Activision need to learn that improving on a game's multiplayer does not just mean adding extra things to the previous year's game. It requires new modes, new features, new challenges, new possibilities and in this case; a completely new engine (how they are still getting away with using the COD4 engine is beyond me).

On the whole, there is SOMETHING enjoyable about MW3. Is it worth the hype that gaming publications have given it?
    -No.

Is it worth the ridiculously high scores that gaming publications have given it?
    -Absolutely not.

Is it worth a user score on 3.2 here on Metacritic?
    -Perhaps.

Does this franchise need to be rebuilt from scratch?
    -Absolutely.

I'm giving this a 5.0 because the campaign was indeed fun for me, but if not for that then I would be giving this a 0. It's nothing more than an expansion pack and I would have indeed been hugely disappointed if I had invested £40 in this game, just to find out that I had received an expansion pack for a very old game (CO4). Activision and their subsidiaries need to hear the message and hear it clear; 'START CREATING VIDEO GAMES AGAIN AND STOP COPYING AND PASTING THE PREVIOUS GAME EACH AND EVERY YEAR. IMPRESS US AGAIN, LIKE YOU DID WITH CALL OF DUTY 4. SHOW US THAT YOU CAN STILL PRODUCE A FRESH AND ORIGINAL TITLE'.

    That is all.
    5.0.

This game is so perfect. But it's only perfect within it's own little box of close-mindedness. Want a game that is always cool and refreshing? I highly recommend converting to the Battlefield series.

A few days ( weeks ) ago I was able to play Modern Warfare 3 for the first time in the PS3 version. I have complains in the multiplayer , impressed with the campaign and satisfied with the great co-op. As I said in my PS3 review, CoD is mainly in the multiplayer side and needs to shake things a little bit more before it gets mauled by other successful multiplayer games. I made an account just to voice my opinion on how bad this game is. And it is that MW3 is what kills COD. This game is truly the worst thing I have ever played in a long time. Stick to game developers that don't rehash the same ole same ole to turn a profit. Do not buy.

This is the WORST copy paste of the millennium, avoid it in all ways, I've to say it's worse than Modern Warfare 2, fortunately I tried it before purchasing it, campaign is short and useless, if compared with MW2 campaign, multiplayer is the best epic fail ever, it's the same as MW2, but here killstreak system is BROKEN, everyone can makes their own overpowered class, some ammos are theThis is the WORST copy paste of the millennium, avoid it in all ways, I've to say it's worse than Modern Warfare 2, fortunately I tried it before purchasing it, campaign is short and useless, if compared with MW2 campaign, multiplayer is the best epic fail ever, it's the same as MW2, but here killstreak system is BROKEN, everyone can makes their own overpowered class, some ammos are the same, maps are really weird and weapons too, just avoid this and download MW2 alterIWnet for PC Expand

I dare say that most of the uber negative reviews on here were written by people who've logged 5 or more days in MW3's multiplayer alone. But, I digress. Having been a cod vet since 2006, I can categorically state that cod has, by far, the WORST community in all of gaming. The community is selfish, lazy, stat-obsessive & far too shaped by Youtube. If you're looking for a skill based, objective oriented shooter, skip it, just move on down the aisle & find another title. But, if you're just looking for some mindless fun & you couldn't care less about stats because you just want to shoot some people in the face, pick it up, because there's nothing wrong with the game itself. Personally found it to be the best of the Call of Duty Series, it was one epic set piece after another, I'm not sure where they can go from here? Decent length to the campaign too, nice to get my moneys worth for a change!

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
