I love it, people here giving it a lot of hate, I dont know exactly what they are expecting. Does the campaign suck? Maybe, but I will never know because I don't buy these games for crap single player, that is what RPGs are for. Played for about 5 hours so far and the gameplay is tight, maps are nice, guns and perks have been rebalanced which I feel is a vast improvement over MW2. As far as people calling this a map pack or an expansion, what call of duty hasn't been such? If EA wanted to invest money and time in a huge engine upgrade for BF3 then so be it. I have that too and it's also quite enjoyable, but I'm not going to blame a developer for not dishing out a bunch of cash to upgrade an engine on an outdated system when new consoles are around the corner. Four of us purchased it and played it last night. The extra gun damage was a little bit of an adjustment but all in all we love it. I noted the people giving it 0s are taking extraordinary time to post across all platforms, really EA employees and fanboys? Metacritic cannot be trusted because of this crap. If you loved MW2 but couldn't stand all the BS danger close/commando, or felt Black Ops fell short because you had to pump a full clip into someone, you will like this game. Is it like an extension of MW2, yes completely, the fixed version. Expand

Well, everyone who actually played the game agree, that this is a very good game. But they also agree, that this is kind of a DLC to MW 2. 60$ for a DLC? That's why i give this game a 0.

What did you guys expect? Way to pay 60-70$ and get excited for some new maps. This is why I enjoy battlefield 3 now. Seems a bit odd that all the critics are giving it such high ratings, very probable they are all getting paid a good amount under the table.

Read through most of these reviews before I got bored out of my mind with people trashing it, because "its the same as the last one". Well first of all it isn't in either respects, different multiplayer (IMO better as well) and a good storyline.
Granted the story line could be better, but it is a great way to carry on from the MW2 end, and (IMO) actually fun. That's what I love in a game,

Granted the story line could be better, but it is a great way to carry on from the MW2 end, and (IMO) actually fun. That's what I love in a game, its not how technically amazing it is, or the realism of the storyline (seeming as this is not set now it is still realistic), it is just the pure fun of playing it. I love playing through the story because it just is fun to see what happens next, and the fact that this is possible to happen (though more dulled down) also (for me) is good. I also love the fun of playing multiplayer either competitively, or just messing around with my friends. Fun is what I look for, seems you guys just want to play a game, decide you hate it, tell other people not buy it and enforce your opinion, then play it some more so you can become top of your friends. If you want some fun and a pretty good storyline, this game is great. Though I would buy it at a cheaper price, I got this with 25% off. Besides I disagree with hype around games that are expensive, just buy them after a couple of months or so and they wil become cheaper.

This is the BEST map pack for MW2 so far. It's a little over priced though, they're usually like $15

This FPS has just released? In 2011? Let me laugh !! There is no evolution since CoDMW... Just a new campaign, heavier textures and new weapons, not a new game. More than $15 for this, it's just a joke ! There is no game development and no expensive work to release this game.

With all of the maps being SO CLOSE QUARTERS, i know this game will turn into just people using SMGs. the precision guns like the M16 are worthless, all you need to do is spray. No innovation, all confusion. i am not a fan, this is the year to skip out on the COD franchise much like a bad madden game, its cheaper to just wait for the next. unfortunately i traded BO and MW2 in towards this... Lets do this logically
Story: Completed at a friends in a staggeringly short period of time. This is the short of campaign I expect from indie games releasing a game 'Episode'. Massively cliche, bad dialogue and horrifyingly dull and repititive. Micheal Bay, one adrenaline rush to the next. Unrealistic rushes too. 4/10 (For nice set pieces)
Gameplay: Exactly the same as when COD4 did it

Gamestyle: The game is focused around close combat, reflex based snap shooting. It is basically one adrenaline rush after another (that phrase is getting repititive). Its not competitive in any way and doesn't really add anything. 5/10
Graphics: Nothing fantastic. Nothing horrible. But at times it seemed glitchy and some of the cutscenes seemed unrealistic (planes flying through stuff). Its not awful but its far from perfect. 7.5/10

    Campaign:

The campaign is fantastic. It meets all expectations of the game, and more. The story is very refreshed and is NOT a 'rehash' of other games in the series. 10/10.

    Multiplayer:

I do not feel I can review the Multiplayer as of yet as I have not played it enough. Expect a further review of the multiplayer on a later date.

Engine/Graphics: Although the engine and graphics of this game do not meet those of a certain competitor in the FPS genre, they are still much better than some on the market, and again, are no where near as bad as have been suggested. Although it is disappointing that the graphics could not be improved, the engine is still better (in my eyes) than the same certain competitor. This is because of the very nice, crisp sound that is a huge improvement over both IW 4.0 and Black Ops' varient 3.0. 8/10

    Gameplay:

Now this is where I believe the game REALLY stands out. The gameplay of Call of Duty, especially this installment (which has gone back to the trademark gameplay of COD4) is usually fantastic. The AI is well polished and MUCH better than a certain competitor on the market and you actually become attached to the characters that you play as. 10/10

Overall, I give the game 9.5/10, which I will round to 10/10 in order to combat the obviously fanboy-esque reviews of the game.

If you want to verify that I am not a 'fanboy' myself, please see my other reviews of both Call of Duty and Battlefield installments. This game DOES NOT deserve 2.8 (at this time of writing), and you if you've played it you know that.

A subscription plan? That's not really new, battlelog offers the same features for free, and this is nothing but a cash grab aimed at zealous CoD fans who are unable to see anything else but this pathetic excuse of game, and Activision knows they can do this to fund their product that is in decline, as it's possible the last resort for it to stay alive.

The production values of this title are an aberration for what video games truly stand for - an Art form. Call of duty is no longer an art, it's merely a shovelware, or something more reminiscent of an yearly sports game; rehashed content, with little or no values or effort put into it. A quick cash grab.

The majority of it's fanbase put the community of gamers to shame; they are mostly close-minded and patriotic - Zealous should i say, about the game. There isn't really anything special about it and they can't see beyond that.

Oh and let's not forget the actions from activion, when they screwed over the people who create this franchise.

Some people might remember that almost everyone at Infinity Ward up and quit after Activision didn't pay them their bonuses they they rightly earned by having one of the best selling FPS's of all time. The new teams that they brought in were Sledgehammer and Raven, neither of them had made an extremely successful FPS before and for being completely new developers to the franchise they did nothing new. They took MW 2 added some new maps a few new killstreaks and called it MW 3. This was just Activision's way to milk more money out of the COD franchise, IW had almost no part in this, the love that they put into MW 2 that made it fun is completely gone, MW 3 was stale before it even came out of the box.

this was once a beautiful series, strong on both PCs and Consoles. now its just a yearly cash-in for Activision.

im sure this game will succeed in sales, there are alot of not-so-smart 12yrs old out there waiting to get there hands on it.
but for me, i'll stick to other shooters.

The series is also responsible for giving consumers the most expensive DLC the world has ever known so that'll cost some review points. I wanted to give it one point for having awesome graphics, but then I remembered 90% of the buildings and textures are recycled from previous games so there is nothing original there and I ended up subtracting points for that.

At this point, COD is not going to change. If you thought you were going to boot up the disc and your character was going to be a small furry wolf shooting skittles and skipping on clouds, you're an idiot. The ground rules for COD are set a this point. You're going to kill people. You're going to have perks. You're going to have killstreaks. You're going to play game modes designed to kill people, to hold flags, to capture flags, or to blow stuff up. Sure there will be little wrinkles in each release, but at this point COD is less like a video game and more like a sport-- like football or basketball. The variety comes not in the changes to the rules, but in changes in the people you play against. Activision will not, and should not, dramatically reinvent this game every year. So IMO, the best you can do as a legitimate critic is to rate the game based on how the game plays, based on map design, and based on overall execution. Half these "zero" reviewers didn't even need to buy the game to complain about the things they're whining about, so they're not doing anyone a service with the reviews. If you don't like COD, just don't buy the game ever again and shut up.

So after all that, I'll say that the game appears to be an improvement over Modern Warfare 2. Gone are many of the player abuses from that game-- the constant grenade launching, commando knifing, etc. Only time will tell if new abuses will arise and how responsive Infinity Ward will be to fixing them. I like the addition of weapon proficiencies, where they have moved some of the weapon specific perks from previous installments. It's too early to tell what the full impact of the new killstreak system will be to gameplay, but the game does seem more frantic because so many killstreaks are active. That could hurt the quality of play in the long term. But the variety of having assault, support, and specialist killstreaks will also keep the game fresh so it's a balance. None of the new game types (kill confirmed, etc.) will supplant favorites like TDM or Domination but they do provide some interesting variety. The maps in this game are small, making this one of the fastest paced COD games, but it will take in the game to give a fair review of the map design. But for right now, I'd say this game is an 8 of 10.

There's only one way to say this: it's a pile of rehashed crap.

The 'changes' to multiplayer amount to a small title update, consisting of features other games have done before and done better. None of the maps are notable and, were there to be a "10 greatest MW maps of all time" list, I can't see any of them being on it. The overall feel is that this once-great series has come and gone.

The campaign is also more of the same, only while this was reasonably impressive back when CoD 4 was released, now it simply feels dated and boring, with the ending two missions being especially underwhelming.

To summarise, it's plain bad, with no redeeming features. My advice is to save your money.

I wanted to start off with the verdict on this game as there seems to be a lot of negative feeling towards it, a lot of which appear to have no substance. Is MW3 similar to previous Call of Duty (CoD) games? Yes. Is this a bad thing? No. Once again the single player experience is decidedly short, probably no more than six hours, and delivers the usual array of intense gun battles and jaw dropping set-pieces that have become the norm for the CoD series. The visuals have been polished from previous entries in the series, although these aren't groundbreaking improvements, and there are also significant improvements in the sound department also. The real reason why anyone forks out their cash for a FPS, be it Battlefield or CoD, is for the multiplayer experience and once again CoD delivers in a big way. The variety of maps available is very good and the new focus of finding a preferred gun and developing it is an interesting new feature that allows the player t refine their online style. The new pointstreak system is also an excellent system and is much more welcoming for newer player to the series. When I first got into the online gaming experience with MW2 it took me quite a while to build up the skill to be able to effectively use killstreaks and I would've welcomed this feature when I was first starting out! My favourite new addition to the multiplayer experience this year has to be the Kill Confirmed game mode. The added pressure of having to round up dog tags following your kill makes for a frantic experience, and popping a grenade into a room full of camping enemies and collecting all those tags for yourself is a very satisfying experience! It's important to note that the frenetic online multiplayer experience has always been the charm of CoD for many people, including myself, and people need to realise it is perfectly acceptable for BF3 and MW3 to be very different and both excellent at the same time. I personally don't find the large maps and style of online play in Battlefield as exhilarating as the quick CQC in CoD, but nonetheless it is an excellent online experience. But if fast paced, adrenaline pumping online play is your thing MW3 is a must have game and will certainly keep you entertained for many months to come! Expand

I have a friend that is beast mode in BF3 and I only think he went positive once tonight while we were matchmaking. Keep in mind there is a learning curve but it is worth every minute. Facts be facts, this game feels extremely similar to MW2. From the graphics to the online multiplayer, redoing what was already successful is the name of the game. Wow. Just wow. At the time of this writing, MW3 has garnered an average of 3.2 from Meta users. I understand that CoD is the biggest series in the world and thus millions of people are going to swear they hate it, but come on guys. MW3 is not a "bad" game. It doesn't deserve props for being new or exciting, it gets no credit for being above and beyond what MW2 is, but at the end of the day, what were we expecting? This game is so widespread that Activision could have forced the developers to start completely from scratch and make a new kind of CoD and people would still find reasons to hate it. The fact of it is, CoD outsells itself as the highest-selling game of all time year after year, and that's for a reason. The vocal haters of CoD are in the minority, by far. Activision knows that, and they now that they are guaranteed money if they just tweak the formula and offer players *just* enough incentive to come back. Seeing as how most of the millions upon millions of gamers to buy MW3 will be casuals who want nothing but a game to play in their spare time, that idea makes sense. I was a huge CoD4:MW fan, and my interest in the series has diminished (as is the case with many of you) over the past few installments. I've been playing MW3 but won't buy it for myself for a long time. But let's not be disingenuous: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is not a bad game, it just isn't an exciting or completely new experience. It doesn't deserve a "0," it doesn't deserve a "10," it's just another typical shooter in the over-populated shooter market. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is the best game I've ever played. The graphics are more realistic than real life, and I feel like I'm really shooting terrorists in the face with every press of R1. The sound literally made my ears orgasm, which I didn't even know was possible. A quick check of Wikipedia reveals that it shouldn't be possible, but for the purpose of the review I will assume that Sledgehammer Games has hired a few wizards to add the final touches to the game. I was rock-hard the entire time I played through the intense, cinema-like single player, and the multi-player may just be the most fun thing ever created. Yes, even better than Slinkies. Literally the only bad parts about the game are the fact that Soap and Yuri die, and the game isn't Battlefield 3, so I'm docking a few points. You owe it to yourself to buy this game, if you don't then you're missing out on literally the greatest shooting game that every has or ever will be made. Expand

Hit detection is way off in general. Bullets still do not penetrate thin walls or wooden crates but can penetrate 12 inch thick titanium steel. Character control in general feels a clumsy. Weapons are awkward to work with. Maps are the typical MW maps you'd expect if not worse. Unimaginative, bland, and with bad spawn points. Kills do not feel as rewarding as before and kill streaks are not as amusing. It's a great fast paced game but in general most of it feels like a rehash of MW2 with a blend of terrible Black Ops maps. Single Player: Same old cliche story suitable for people/children who need explosions and chaos to obtain an orgasm and deem it a good game or movie. I was in pain trying to finish this game, instead of enjoying it. I just wanted to get this garbage story to end and to my surprise; the expected MW ending. The AI of this game like always, using the same bad programing can cause some what of a humor. Small scaled linear pathway maps like usual. In conclusions, this game is nothing but a rehash of the old game (including Treyarch's Black Ops) with the number 3 stamped in front. Save your self $60 and keep on enjoying MW2. Expand

The Singleplayer is ok. The multiplayer is really bad. Get this only if you like to follow the stream. I have no idea how a game like this manages to sell millions of copies. Either the gaming industry and consumers consist of a much younger audience, or something drastically casual has washed over it. Skyrim is probably the game to buy this november.

Let me pose this question. why does a new FPS need to be released every year by the same developer like a sports game (FiFa, Madden, Tiger Woods, NBA2whatever)? Is it even necessary for a sports game to release a whole new game every year when rosters change or teams move cities? This could have easily been an expanision pack to Mw2 or even something completely different for Black Ops. Why does the COD franchise feel they need to release something completely independent of Black Ops after people just spent money not only only buying Black Ops but then buying the DLC for it.

It seems like Activision doesn't care and this isn't new behavior for them. Tony Hawk Pro skater was driven into the ground by Activison and Neversoft. Ironically it was EA who stole their skateboarding video game glory with the SKATE franchise. I wouldn't say that there's no room for COD, but they should think about changing their business models if they want to keep FPS enthusiasts and novices from venturing off then they better spice up the formula because the old formula is stale & expensive.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
