Sencillamente un excelente juego, en momentos te deja sin aliento, inmersivo qué casi da vértigo cuando vas descendiendo por los aires. Es un claro ejemplo de como se debe hacer una secuela. Simplemente épico.

I gotta be honest, the first 70 or so hours of this game were amazing. It was the first game in awhile where that's all I wanted to play with every free moment I had. But after the 70 hour mark it just became very repetitive, and I started to notice just how shallow the story and quests were, and even the dungeons bored me. It was the first game in awhile where that's all I wanted to play with every free moment I had. But after the 70 hour mark it just became very repetitive, and I started to notice just how shallow the story and quests were, and even the dungeons bored me. The first two I did were brilliant (wind and water temples), while the other 2 were very dull and I just wanted to get to the end.

Despite its brilliance, BotW also left me feeling unsatisfied once I beat it. The story was just not very good, and TotK is the exact same in this regard. Not only that but the game gives the player information that the characters don't know, and so you have to continue through the story knowing what's happening but being unable to inform others, which was frustrating.

The more you play, the more you really get the feeling that the developers got tired. Rauru's blessing shrines, for instance. There are so many of these, where you find a shrine and there's no puzzle at all--you just simply collect your treasure and leave. At first it's a nice little reprieve, but then when you encounter them again and again you start to miss the puzzles. They also repeatedly have shrines where you just kill all the zonaite constructs using items in the environment, which are all a cakewalk. I guess those were easier to design than puzzles. Then there's the plethora of caves that are all essentially the same, and the koroks who can't walk and need your assistance to reach their friend, and the guys who need help holding their signs. You do so many of these that it becomes a grind.

That you can also constantly cheese the game also speaks to the developers not caring as much as you think. Once I learned how to make a hoverbike out of 2 fans and a steering stick that's literally all I ever used to travel. There was no longer any reason to care about horses, gliding from sky islands, or land vehicles of any kind. The shrine puzzles can also be cheesed horribly using a variety of methods. Some will say this is intentional, but I fail to see how using the same technique on every shrine could be intentional. There were simply too many variables for the developers to keep track of.

And then there are the depths: a massive, pointless underground that seems to only exist to surprise the player into thinking there's an overwhelming amount of content. There's really not much to be found down there, and everything that exists is repetitive. It just feels like they tried to make the game huge for the sake of being huge. I would have rather had them focus on underwater exploration instead of this entire underground that is a chore to navigate and offers nothing truly exciting.

I think the biggest letdown though, for me, is just the fact that the game is a continuation of Breath of the Wild in every sense. It doesn't feel truly new. It feels like one massive expansion pack. And no matter how much you argue against that until you're blue in the face, that is exactly what it is. They took the world of BotW and edited the heck out of it. While it's amazing what they were able to accomplish on the Switch, it's also visually underwhelming because it still looks like a 6 year old game (which looked dated even back then)--and we've been there and done that.

Overall, I think the game is a good way to waste 100-160 hours, but it's also overrated because it lacks in a number of key areas that left me feeling very unsatisfied once the credits rolled. I don't think I should feel that way from a game that's gotten 10/10 ratings across the board. I certainly shouldn't feel that from a game I dropped 100+ hours into. Just because a game has inventive ideas and loads of content doesn't make it a masterpiece. Pacing, story, consistency and quality of content are also important.

At first I wondered if this game would feel too much like BotW. Thankfully I was proven wrong. Not only is this game a total upgrade in every way, it also feels completely separate as a game. The exploration feels more satisfying, less empty space as well as more places to explore. I'm impressed the switch pulled off such a feat. NPCs also feel more significant.

The final boss was an intense and heart-pumping moment with the greatest moments of gaming I have ever seen. The characters are interesting and they each have a different personality. I do appreciate Nintendo taking the time to give each of the probably thousands of characters in the game different text boxes and interesting little bits of details about themselves as well. Link is back with a brand new set of abilities such as Ultrahand which lets you take anything and build something beautiful with it, Fuse which can let fuse your weapons, shields, and arrows with any item in the game, Ascend which can let you go up any solid surface that is above you which is super helpful with navigating the world of Hyrule, and finally Rewind which lets you turn objects back in time so let's say you dropped something by accident off a high cliff. Well, thanks to Rewind if you are fast enough you can rewind it in time, and have come right back at you. There is one other ability that wasn't shown in any trailers so I won't tell you it because that would spoil the game if I did. This game also includes some hidden references to past Zelda games and also tons of other secrets which give this game a bunch of replayability. Sure it may be $70 which is a bit more than the usual switch game I would say it is well worth it. So if you want to buy it and you have money go and get it and you will not regret it at all. Expand

Good things first, the open world is just as great as breath of the wild. Zounath Lego system is fantastic. Can spend 100 hr+ easily on this game.

On the other hand, the party system is garbage. You need to “talk” to a npc to use an ability. So in a chaotic fight, you need to locate NPCs runs around randomly and click to talk to it. It is irritating.

As someone who loved Breath of the Wild and had sky-high (pun intended) expectations for Tears of the Kingdoms, I got to say... the game surpassed my expectations.
Now, while the combat system and the visuals remain largely the same as in Breath of the Wild, everything else has been improved; the story is more engaging, the puzzles are more creative, there's more enemy variety, the map has been changed in many areas and there's much more content overall.
However, being able to explore islands in the goddamn sky and the gloomy depths, paired up with Breath of the Wild's unmatched sense of exploration and even more player freedom, a huge world filled with so much content, 100 hours of playtime feels like barely scratching the surface, is an unbelievable achievement that I didn't think was possible for videogames.
And I thought Breath of the Wild had mind-blowing abilities and mechanics but Tears of the Kingdom puts it to shame with its new set of abilities and tweaks; they're simply game-changing.
With that being said though, I wish the sky islands were slightly more dense and the frame rate was more consistent.

    Pros:
    + Addictive gameplay
    + Groundbreaking new ideas
+ Massive world filled with nearly endless amount of content
    + Genius mechanics
    + Gorgeous visuals & audio

    Cons:

    - Masterpiece -
While Breath of the Wild was a breath of fresh air for the Open World genre, Tears of the Kingdom raises the bar for the Open World genre up to the skies both figuratively and literally, and it goes even further by redefining the limits of videogames in general.
This is a "once-in-a-decade" kind of game, an achievement in the videogame industry and a very strong contender for being the best videogame experience I've ever had.

    Do I recommend it?:
It makes Breath of the Wild obsolete, so it's a must-play.

Absolutely amazing game. When Breath of the Wild was released, many of us couldn't imagine bigger and better sandbox game. I thought that BotW was THE ULTIMATE sandbox, but now I know I was wrong.

Breath of the Wild was kind of messiah of sandboxes. No one, ever before, made bigger and better sandbox. Tears of the Kingdom however, is not a messiah, but it's an innovator - it improves the mechanics and adds more.

They say that surface map of Hyrule is the same as it was in Breath of the Wild, but when I'm traversing it, I don't know what to expect behind the corner, even when I spent almost 200hrs in the predecessor. You start in another place of the world, and some places which was relatively safe in BotW are dangerous in TotK and vice versa. On top of that, TotK adds sky islands and underground with their own resources. Underground seems pretty dangerous at first, but if you know how to traverse it, it can be pretty soothing experience with almost no background music and with particles in the air. If you are bored with the gameplay loop on the surface, or in the underground, you can seamlessly go somewhere else.

Breath of the Wild was a game about loneliness. Our protagonist was asleep for 100 years and no one knew who he was. But Tears of the Kingdom is a game about relationships. Relationships you made in BotW. The story take place few years after the ending of BotW and you can see kids grew up, changes in the open world, etc.

Nintendo made the game to be friendly to new players, so you can learn about the story from BotW in different places in Hyrule from different people. I still recommend playing BotW first, because of meeting new friends who are present in TotK, and some side quests changing the open world, in a way which we see now in TotK.
However, there are some plot holes, like, where are the Divine Beasts? Why the sun and the moon are going backwards now?

The soundtrack is very good and in my opinion is better than it was in BotW. Themes of the towns are pretty much the same, but themes in shrines, battle themes are new and feel fresh. And let's not forget about references to older Zelda titles in boss battle themes, and in other places too.

Tears of the Kingdom is a great puzzle sandbox with the vast, open world. Basically all abilities you have are used to solving puzzles. There is no one proper way to solve the puzzles, you can solve it however you want and that's the most important part of this game. It gives the players a lot of satisfaction when they solve the puzzles in their own way, that's why the playthrough would be different for each of us. That was the case in BotW too, but with the abilities such as Ultrahand, or Fuse, the possibilities are endless.

Physics engine is as good as it was in BotW - it's absolutely phenomenal. In TotK it spread its wings to the maximum with the new abilities.

Ultrahand modifies how the player looks at things in Hyrule. Now, a tree is not just another tree, but you can connect trunks and make a raft, or a roof to make a fire when it rains, or you can climb high places, and there are a lot of things like that you can use to achieve your own goals.
Fuse is the developers' answer to durability complains in BotW. Not only fusing something durable to a weapon increases its durability, or something powerful increases its attack power, but it also gives it its properties. For example, when you attach ice fruit to a weapon, it gives freezing attack to it. Again, you can try combining different things in your own, creative way.
On top of that, there is Ascend which gives you the ability to float through ceilings, and which indeed sometimes feels like cheating (as the developers said in an interview), and Recall which rewinds time.

The story was, like it was in BotW, written after they had got gameplay mechanics done. Nintendo had a tough task optimizing it that you can discover it in any order, so it's again in form of memories. However, I recommend discovering it in a "proper" order, as in shown in the Forgotten Temple (from left to right, it's not a spoiler as it's one of the first main quests). The story doesn't have a lot of time relatively to playthrough time, and it's clearly visible that the main point of this game is gameplay. However, you can dive into lore deeper if you want, youtubers make hours-long videos about lore in this game.

The game works in 30 fps, sometimes more stable, sometimes less, sometimes framerate drops to 20-25 fps. But it wasn't a problem for me, for me hardware limitations were visible when something you built vanishes after you wander too far away from that, and it's usually not that far...

But even with that said, Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best games of all time, and it's my top 1 favorite games at the moment.
    I give it a solid 10/10.

    + gameplay
    + music
    + mechanics / abilities
    + the ultimate sandbox
    + lore

    - plot holes
    - hardware limitations
    - controlling sages

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Summary: Open World Action Adventure starring Zelda, Link, and their friends and foes. It's basically BOTW II, with more areas to explore, side activities to do, and new abilities to play with. Most of all, its solid gameplay intertwined with its charm make it a very unforgettable experience that is a lot of fun.

    The Good:

If you felt there wasn't a ton of stuff to do in BOTW, you certainly won't get that feeling in TOTK. You can spend somewhere between 150 and 200 hours if you choose to 100% the game. Even outside of all the things that get you to that 100%, there are just more NPCs walking around, enemy encampments scattered about, and areas to explore in the name of caves introduced to the main world, the sky islands, and the Depths, which is like an "upside down" pitch-dark world that is a mirror of the main overworld you are used to from BOTW.

The combat is the same from BOTW, so if you liked it there you will like it here. If you haven't played BOTW, it's very reminiscent to other 3rd person action games where you lock onto targets and dodge around and get your hits in when you can (which, you can often as the game is not very difficult). What is more interesting however in TOTK, is the ability to fuse things to your weapons and shields. This helps spice up combat a bit as you can attach anything you want to a weapon or shield which will give it different properties. As you progress the main story, you get these spirit followers that will follow you around and help you fight stuff which helps speed up clearing big enemy encampments as well.

One the biggest features of the game is the ability to build things using the materials fusing ability (called ultra hand, different from the ability that you use to fuse stuff to weapons). This is used in the main story, in side quests, and in figuring out most puzzles. However, the most interesting part to a lot of players is probably how you can use it to build traps, fighting contraptions, vehicles of different kinds: whatever you can think of really. This wasn't really something that I was interested in doing, but overall I enjoyed doing the quests and side stuff that required building.

    The Bad:

The story is like a 4 out of 10. Its pretty basic, and outside of the twist (which I won't spoil but you probably know what it is anyway from the Internet) it just isn't very interesting and it mostly just keeps repeating the same points throughout the whole thing. I understand its Nintendo and they probably want to appeal to the widest audience as possible, but I don't think kids would really care if they don't understand the story because they probably just want to fight stuff and build silly things with ultra hand. So, that being said it would have served the game better to have a better written story.

The depths and sky areas are kinda a bummer. The sky area is not very big at all and consists of a bunch of small to medium sized islands, and just feels big at first because of how spread out it is. If you put all the sky areas together instead of spread out over the map like they are, it would probably be the size of one of the biomes, like gerudo desert or death mountain. The depths is a mirror of the normal world above, so where there is a valley in the normal world, thats a mountain in the depths. That in itself is kind of a bummer, but more so the fact that there is hardly any lore at all outside of a couple main quest lines down there, and there are just a bunch of copy-pasted enemies from the normal world down there for the most part.

That leads to the last bad part, the copy-pasting. Its an issue with a lot of Open World games, and TOTK is not much different. A lot of the game is copy-pasted collectible stuff and enemy encampments. If you don't enjoy that kind of content, it is easy to feel like there isn't much enjoyable stuff to actually use the fun abilities and the combat abilities against.

Tears of the Kingdom takes what it's predecessor did so great and somehow makes it even greater.

Zelda looked like a cat and the blood moon lines sound like shes taking a dump while on the phone at night. The O N L Y good part narratively was the ending and Laurelin village. The gameplay is overall good. The 4 main ability's are good. The amount of weird, whack, sick, or overpowered weapons and vehicles you can make is almost infinite. There are some things like that you only can attach 20/21 things together with ultrahand, maybe a bit more would have been fun.
The dungeons, they are much better than the ones from botw. Maybe still not as good as previous titles, but they are a lot of fun.
The world itself is also massive. The surface hasn't changed much from botw, but it still feels like a new world. The sky islands are fun, but also a bit of a antic-climax to me. I thought there would be more islands to discover, but there aren't so much. The dephts/underground is massive and full of cool things. It is also overall not scary.
The bossfights are just good. Maybe it would have been more fun if they were a bit less "gimmicky" but overall they are fun. The enemies are more fun to battle than in botw. Now you do it for the drops so that you can fuse. The enemy variation also has been improved.
I would give this game a 9.8, better than botw and just awesome to play.

Welp its certainly a BOTW remix. If you liked the previous game you will like this one, if not it does very little to improve on the problems of the original. This game has a lot of issues past the surface. The rewards form exploration are still poor, the UI is still not good and the game has basically no accessibility options not even brightness. Fusing stuff and menu navigation feels unintuitive and weapons are somehow worse durability they did not adress that common critique, fusion does little to fix it. Many of the ideas in this game wear out fast: depths is cool for a few minutes but its very much same textures and not much besides autobuild and batteries which are not really needed since game always pushes you to use same vechicles/ builds. Its pretty empty and meaningless past a point. Sky islands also have little to do minus spirit sage. There are more types of enemies but they still feel underwhelming comparatively, nor are they that interesting. and you beat them mostly wwith arrows. The story is plain poor, not only are memories scattered and poor way to teel it but it feels just same rehash like they threw in ideas from ocarina and any other zelda with little impact, and direction and can be pretty much skipped to light dragon. The dungeons while some are ok they really still feel like they fall short of this series potential and did not improve enough. Ultra hand while fun slows the pace and usually results in making same stuff that works i enjoy it for engineering brain but it tanks framerate and the game doesn't fully use its potential. The allies abilities work poorly when trying to activate and get in the way, botw had better ones like revali that helped how did that regress? Link and ganon especially ganon is underwhelming and barely characters at times. at times world feels large for the sake of it. It really feels like they used alot of botw again with same map but didn't fix its issues. i don't understand how it took 6 years at times and $70 is alot to ask for what feels like a game i already played 6 years ago. It also ignores events and stuff prom previous game like sheikah and just replaces it making it not really a good sequel in narrative or some aspects. TLDR its botw remix solidly made but underwhelming and frustrating. Expand

The gameplay is RIDICULOUS. Link looks like a dork putting a library on a shield, or ruining a masterpiece of a legendary sword like the fierce deity’s sword with any garbage you can think of to combine with. The fusing ability was just fan service and not something truly credible for the lore.

Graphics and map are just exactly botw. No innovation at all. The skies are just some rocks over here and there and the depths are too repetitive and not so interesting. Atmosphere: do you remember the atmosphere that MM (or TP, SS, OoT) created? This game doesn’t get one inch close to that creation of atmosphere. It just feels like a Zelda for Fortnite junkies.

Storytelling: this is the most compelling point to make a judgement of this game. Zelda games have always been memorable for the stories they tell and HOW they tell it. This game just RUSHES to tell a not so credible story. Nintendo just wanted to vaguely accomplish to tell a story as a side dish for a gameplay aimed at toddlers. A very good game. A delusion of a Zelda game.

    Ost / 9.5
Incredible is all I can say. Nearly perfect soooo close to being on the level of games like OoT, Witcher 3 and FFX.

    Story / 9
I think this is the best story in a Zelda game since OoT but the way the story is told and the freedom and open-ended nature of the game actually hurts the narrative. I believe if this story was told in a more direct and more narratively driven way it could potentially be an amazing story.

    Characters / 9
The characters in Zelda games have this charm to them that makes them likeable and funny even though objectively they are just silly, but you can't help but giggle and like them. Voice acting is superb in Japanese sometimes I feel like I'm watching a Studio Ghibli film. The English voice acting and writing leaves something to be desired which is the main reason I cannot give this category a 10.

Overall I would say anywhere between a 9-9.5/10 is a fair score for TotK it's one of the best games I've ever played. I have a personal top 100 favorite game of all time list and after a couple months of letting it sit and letting the hype die down. I've officially put Tears of the Kingdom in my top 15 and it's my 3rd favorite Zelda game of all time. I believe if a perfect open world video game exist it would be something like the freedom you get in Totk with the boss designs and combat precision of Elden Ring and the writing and graphical fidelity of God of War.

I don even have enough characters here to adequately address all of this game issues so I try to sum it up.

Nintendo somehow managed to make TotK even worse than BotW, which in of itself is a feat though. At least it looks good... for a Switch game. So I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! If you really feel you have to buy it don't pay 70$ for it, better spend that money on the lottery or so.

If you really feel you have to buy it don't pay 70$ for it, better spend that money on the lottery or so. Depending on condition you shouldn't spend more than 50-55$ on this atrocity. It's just the same game, same problems but different name. Sadly TotK only contains the same core problems of BotW with new, fancy mechanics that are actually useless where it counts (more on that below) instead of actually addressing the customers wish and solving the problems. It was pretty much to be expected. Nintendo doesn't care about their customers as long as they buy their s*it I guess that's just everywhere in capitalism but it dissapoints. The last GOOD (3D) Zelda (not counting remakes and HD remasters) is now over a decade old (I'm talking Twilight Princess).

Now, let's go down the list, shall we?
    1. Questmarker still only show the quest giver not the objective/objective area causing you to be lost more often.
    2. Until late in the game when you have maxed out armor enemies will easily kill you in a few hits and they like to swarm you making it more unlikely you life. That enemies get substitute with stronger color swaps and equipment as you progress will assure you will keep on dying.
    3. Speaking of Equipment, the game still ruins the fun with the durability system who just discourages the player to interact with anything moving (like 5 times as bad as BotW as you'll learn if you read more) and it's a 5 year old game from basically 2 Gens ago (since I wouldn't really call the Switch last gen on a technical level). There is ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON TO NOT GIVE OUT AT LEAST WEAK BASE EQUIPMENT TO THE PLAYER THAT DOESN'T BREAK OR NEEDS RECHARGING so players aren't left hanging if an enemy needs more hits than the weapons currently on you can take. Sure you can use "Fuse" to get SLIGHTLY stronger weapons but since you can't fuse Melee weapons or Shields with anything from the inventory directly and always have to first put down the material then fuse, it is pointless in active battle once the strengthening parts break off. Heck, even your Shield is as good as useless because enemies just hit through it when you hold it up, as if it wasn't even there, no matter what kind of weapon they use.
    4. This time it's 150 shrines aka puzzle rooms and 1000 Koroks to find and you need 400 something to max out slots.
    5. Then even with about 6 years passed in-game almost no one remembers the Hero who ended the apocalypse?! Attracting new players? If you do a direct sequel you do it for the fans it already has not to attract new players. Otherwise you only piss off the fans and won't get many new faces that haven't come with the first game.
    6. World is still big and mostly empty with more pointless empty space filled by the Sky Islands that are even more annoying to get from place to place since they are not connected in any way, shape or from to navigate other then gliding. Even less is going on in the depths asides endless darkness and a couple of extra bosses. The land of Hyrule in TotK is 80% monotonous, repetitive, filler landscape. What makes TotK worse than BotW in that regard is the depths itself are like 95% filler land because the few "dungeons" in it could easily be handled in a contained room and would save you the boring walking into them and the Sky Islands are also so much filler landscape. BotW/TotK has the BIGGEST YET MOST BORING DESIGNED HYRULE WORLDMAP since the later eighties where old ass, 8bit NES debut of the IP was. Further you still don't really want to explore the world for prices or discoveries because in most cases, you waste more resources than you get back. You won't even get a sense of accomplishing if you still choose doing so.
    7. Before I forget, what's with that stupid money and material grind?! The franchise IS SUPPOSED to be fun exploration and unique puzzle solving, not a monotones drag of money and material grind. You LITERALLY ARE FORCED TO save-scum because material drop rate is so absurdly low.
    8. We still only get puzzle rooms and mini-dungeons for the story. At least bosses are much cooler this time around.
    9. From my 370 hours when seeing the credits, most was spent traversing boring landscape and searching for ANYTHING interesting, even knowing the general area and only 15 hours actual game.

Really though, DON'T BUY THIS TRASH HEAP OF PROGRAM CODE FOR FULL PRICE, because YOU WILL REGRET IT. I can't believe I made it through the whole game, though there was NO WAY I tried to do it by my own exploration without Internet help. It's just too much of a torment to play the game and try to find everything or just the bare minimum to reasonably get through yourself.

The initial stages of the game were enjoyable, leading me to complete three Regional Phenomena quests and explore a considerable portion of the Depths. Yet, over time, my experience was marred by a growing sense of irritation.

My most significant issue lies with the controls. Nintendo appears to be attempting to squeeze too much functionality into a single console controller. This results in a game experience where players find themselves spending an excessive amount of their playtime navigating through menus. Constant interruptions to select a new weapon, shield, or bow, or to consume food, become a prominent part of the game. For those seeking a more laid-back gaming session, this could become a source of annoyance due to the incessant need to switch to a menu to choose an option. The interruptions are relentless.

When it comes to world design and the sheer variety of activities, the game scores a perfect '10'. While it's true that the graphics are bound by the system's limitations, they remain quite admirable. Though they occasionally appear pixelated, they are still beautiful within their constraints. No one expects PlayStation 5 level graphics, but what's presented here is not just acceptable, but artistically, very commendable.

In conclusion, I rate the game a 7. While it offers a fantastic world to explore, the overall experience is significantly hindered by an overly complex and tedious control scheme.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's literally a Breath of the Wild clone with different abilities. I actually enjoyed it ok for the four regional phenomena temples and getting the sage's abilities stuff. Then it became a real nuisance as soon as I unlocked the find the fifth sage quest and had only the clue of "the ruins" and everything went downhill from there with the annoying gloom killing you mechanic, way too cryptic and "finding a needle in a haystack" b.s. with how big the overworld was, and needing so much stamina vessels/heart containers from shrines to get the master sword. The breakable weapons, lack of much of a soundtrack, food cooking, and deaths in 1-2-3 hits regardless of how many heart containers you have were also irritating elements carried over from Breath of the Wild into this game. I really hope they stop the Breath/Tears formula here and go back to Twilight Princess/Majora/Ocarina stuff or something new that's different from this formula. I can see how people would enjoy the Breath/Tears formula and it isn't necessarily bad, I just really don't care for it myself and much prefer traditional 3D Zelda formula. Expand

After very much enjoying – but not exactly falling in love with – Breath of the Wild, I was admittedly pretty sceptical in the run up to Tears of the Kingdom. Sure, that third trailer was awesome, but to me at least, it still appeared too similar to its 2017 predecessor and I didn’t think it would grab me like more traditional Zelda’s titles such as The Wind Waker and A Link Between Worlds did in the past. However, after more than 200 hours of exhilarating gameplay, I can comfortably state that this game is the easiest 10/10 I’ll ever give.

From the opening few hours in Sky Isles tutorial area, I was utterly hooked and didn’t once stop to dip into a single other game across Switch, PS5 and Series X until I’d finished what is, for me, an unadulterated masterpiece and the very peak of Nintendo’s creative vision. On and off, it took me six whole years to put 125 hours into Breath of the Wild, but it took me less than six weeks to reach the same milestone in Tears of the Kingdom. The Switch is definitely showing its age these days, but somehow, TOTK manages to look absolutely stunning on both a 65” 4K living room TV and the systems own OLED screen in handheld mode. Yes, the frame rate does occasionally dip below 30 frames-per-second, but after a couple hours I stopped even noticing it. Seriously, if you’re still on the fence, do yourself a favour and jump off right now and pick this game up. I highly doubt you’ll regret it for even the merest moment.

Tears of the Kingdom is without question my game of the year so far and, as far as I’m concerned, the greatest video game ever made. Yes, it really is ‘that’ good. Seriously, just give the game a chance, and you’ll probably feel just as strongly about it as I do.

While having quite a few issues such as lack of creativity in dungeons and a lacking reward system, tears of the kingdom is still an excellent game, developing and refining what made breath of the wild a classic, and adding a new creative touch to the series with building techniques. You have so much freedom in this game, and there were so many things I didn’t do. After beating it, I realized that I was only 48% complete, and there were countless side quests and missions left for me to do. The gameplay sits just on the line between easy and difficult, which is a perfect balance. The finale was so amazing, I just sat in silence and stared out of a window as the credits rolled on my screen. As much as the world, the gameplay and everything is outstanding, the main narrative is simply boring and repetitive. It really took all my motivation to do all dungeons. You are force to follow characters that are locked into scripted sequence and interact 4-5 locks every time.

But the pain is worth, the ending is satisfying.

Weak narrative, lack of cohesion, poor dialogues and cheap world building are the main offenders, but there are others. Assets are almost entirely recycled from BOTW, but the narrative does not acknowledge its events, so it's hard to avoid the feeling of a hard reset with minimal shuffle, especially given that this is shipped as the longest-in-development Zelda game full price and not as a large paid DLC/expansion pack.

    1) Gameplay
Some gameplay choices and missed QA checks affect the game. The ultrahand mechanic is fun for a while, but you quickly realise how overpowered is it and how the wide majority of the puzzles are now solved with that alone. This in turns means that most puzzles are linear and predictable, making shrines an even bigger slog than before (after the first fun ~20).

The champions abilities are incredibly hard to trigger, and make a mess during combat. One wonders why they didn't tie them to a shortcut...

There are improvements to the menu system of BOTW but not nearly enough to remove the friction when cooking many recipes and in other situations.

Most of the game is made by fetch quests which aim to make you explore the world, which is fund only when this means exploring the new areas and not the one copy pasted from BOTW. Almost all secondary missions are boring. There's only one good narrated and plot-justified secondary mission (master's sword) that however falls short of delivering the emotional potential it builds. 2) Plot
Very poor dialogues and attention to details, to the point that it is hard to believe. Ganondorf deserves better: his characterisation and motives are laughably bad. There's a very good plot part around master's sword and Zelda but I found it failed to deliver its emotional potential.

Many missed opportunities also on the music front: no memorable melody except the title track, every new music is very generic and forgettable, or entirely brought from the previous game.

    3) Graphics
Everyone talks about how developers made a miracle of pulling this game out of a 2016 old tablet hardware. The reality is that they didn't achieve anything; the framerate simply drops dramatically down to 12-15 fps whenever it needs to, which fortunately is not too frequently. There are sectios where this gets in the way, however, and this has to be acknowledged. I had nausea during one of the major temples: the framerate drops were so frequent and inconsistent that I had to stop playing for a while, and I literally had to rush through the dungeon.

The entire underworld section is poorly characterised also due to a poor lighting engine. There is a big issue with fog that impedes gameplay in many sections. For some reason, many areas of the game were given this foggy atmosphere that makes things very hard to see in an unpleasant and not justified way. It could be the result of further technical limitations.

The rest of the world looks pretty as usual, especially the new sky sections.

    4) Music
I really was expecting more on this front. Missed opportunity to build more atmosphere and great melodies as every Zelda title did before. Almost all music is pulled from BOTW. The only good new piece is the title track, which is in fact used profusely; the soundtrack in new areas/fights is bland and forgettable, even towards end game.

Nintendo is going with quantity over quality with those new Zelda games since BOTW (at least BOTW was kinds fun cause it was new). But TOTK is just super repetitive with a boring story.

The game had about 6 years old development time and aside from few very fun new abilities (the very beginning of the game is actually pretty new, fun and refreshing) : after about 40 hours of gameplay you just don't know what to do anymore cause again : the open world is just big to be big. Nothing impressive there aside from a few charming places (like little village etc...). The open world trend is worth it when it's packed with great content like on Elden Ring ! Otherwise it's better to go with the linear approach like in previous Zelda games (Ocarina of time and Twilight princess for example). Conclusion : TOTK is fun at the beginning of the game. But then you quickly understand that you have no goal, you are going nowhere and you just do the " shrines " over and over and over and over again .... TOTK is the definition of a repetitive video game .

    Could have been much better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
