This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game did not live up to the hype.
    Some disappointments:
    - A lot of recycled game mechanics from botw. It feels more like a DLC than a whole new game.
    - The introduction is too long, linear and tedious. This ruins replay-ability.
    - The construction-type game mechanic feels a lot like actual work, with a poor interface. If you do 3D modeling as a day-time job, playing this game is not relaxing nor entertaining. Much rather get back to work. It feels very off in a Zelda game.
    - The game is nearly unplayable for people with limited spatial awareness.
    - Storyline doesn't provoke progression.
    - Deviating from the storyline is unrewarding.
    - The vast spectrum of weapons and abilities makes for an overcomplicated play-style.
    - Seems to target a very young audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remove the Zelda name from this game and all of the nostalgia would be completely washed away and that is the only reason this game is getting such glowing reviews. Not only did Nintendo screw up the one thing that made BOTW so awesome, but they doubled down on so many things from BOTW that people hated. The storyline is pathetic outside of the first 10 minutes and the extended ending. The "all weapons have decayed" plot device makes exactly zero sense. Most of the sages are absolutely useless outside of specific combat situations, Tulin being the sole exception since he helps you glide better (with a massive recharge time, btw) and his crit shots can be super useful, especially when stunning a Frox for an unexpected easy hit or two. Some people complained about how BOTW was a largely empty world... well, that same thing still applies here, which is ironic considering how this game absolutely BURIES you in quests and pointless busywork to do basic things, like activating towers. Thankfully you don't have to climb them anymore, but I found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly when I'd come across a tower that had a blocked entrance for no good reason and I had to look around yet again for some alternative way in. That got old super fast and made lots of other things feel like a chore to get done. Bad design of one bit seeps into the design choices of other bits and spoils the experience by making it feel like a total slog.

Now... a lot of people complain about the visuals. Although I found a few really problematic areas (like the occasional mesh overlap), I didn't have much issue with how the game looked. Where flowing water turns into a waterfall looks absolutely awful, but that was the only major gripe I had with the visuals. I didn't have high expectations here, given that it's a Switch game, so that part's pretty much fine with me. Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Neutral... and ironically the only thing saving this from an even lower score.

Fusion mechanics... hoo boy. This could have been interesting. You can make some really gnarly swords and some really interesting and useful shields... but since they doubled down on the durability detail that almost everyone hated in BOTW, this got old super fast. This was the one part of the game that could have saved it but nope... epic fail.

Ultrahand is kind of interesting. Building vehicles can be rewarding, and Autobuild has a couple of pretty interesting prebuilt designs. Unfortunately, most of the designs you can find from schema stones or the Yiga are absolutely worthless, and with only 8 slots for custom designs, you will run out of spots quickly. I built a really nice cannon car that made it impossible for regular enemies to do anything about, and it was pretty funny when a Frox just nommed it. Unfortunately, the interface is extremely slow, so even this part of the game suffers from the feeling of a slog.

The economics are completely broken from BOTW. It's much harder to earn rupees, since almost everything has been downgraded in value, and starter clothing is stupid expensive until you do pointless quests... in one case, MULTIPLE pointless quests. Admittedly, finding out that Cece has a carrot addiction is funny, but that's not only an outlier plot point in the sea of extremely lame plot points, but it's also one told so many times in fiction that it just serves to say "hey where have I seen this before?". But anyway, back to economics... even the great fairies are broken in terms of economics... everything has a labor charge now? On top of forcing you do to filler quests? Just drag it out even more, why don't ya... no, just no... just take my 10k rupees and bugger off. BOTW did this part right.

Some people say that the combat is easier, some say it's harder. I say it's about the same. Enemies have new attack patterns, and Nintendo went into their back catalog and pulled old enemies from the past into this game. No one liked the Like Likes though, Nintendo... so bringing them back was dumb. I didn't expect to see Gleeoks return though. Where's the new stuff? Oh, Horriblins... whose name matches their design. Yeah, it's funny the first time to watch them bounce around on their butt, but they don't add much to the gameplay at all. When you first start the game, you are horribly outmatched, as the statistics of the enemies are pumped WAY up. Getting hit once from a regular Bokoblin can get you a Game Over. What nonsense is this? You can be one-hit KO'd from the weakest monster in Ganondorf's army. Terrible balancing issues permeate the entire game. And then we get to the final boss... wow. You thought Calamity Ganon was a pushover? This game's final fight makes Calamity Ganon feel like a legitimate challenge. Terrible, terrible balancing.

I could go on for days about how screwed up this game was and how much they completely drained all of the fun out of BOTW, but there's a character limit here. All in all, this game was an epic fail.

・Overwhelming lack of tutorials and terrible controls
Characters who have forgotten about the protagonist
・Cid, who didn't bother to mention the existence of the betrothed despite our deepening friendship
    ・Zelda takes over Link’s home

While there are various dissatisfactions, the worst aspects are the story and the excessive focus on Princess Zelda.

Zelda's motives for her actions continue to lack any genuine love for the people. She has become even more self-centered and self-absorbed. I can't find even a trace of willingness to help her. It all feels like a contrived and convenient happy ending.

This game is the disappointment of the year. I got it for free to test it and following all the hype I expected something great but what I ultimately got was nothing more than bad.

There are some positives; the game looks nice and the environments have a nice vibe to them. Furthermore, exploration is fun and the combination mechanisms are innovative and have a lot of potential. The allow for some really creative approach but are restricted by the clunky controls quite a bit (see next part for more on this). Too often a valuable building part falls down into the void and is gone until the game is restarted. That's not too bad though because it gives a sense of caution.

The music is decent and sound effects fit the ambiance well but neither are something special. Voice acting is well done for the few spoken lines there are, but again, Link doesn't respond verbally to anyone.

If that was everything about this game, it'd probably get a 7 or 8 score but the combat and the controls is what's the real catastrophe. They're just bad, really bad.
First and foremost, who'd though putting the "run button" on th topmost button was a good idea. Not only does it hurt my hands but it also blocks access of the other face buttons. It's also so unintuitive, as other similar games have the run command on the downmost button, a shoulder button or the right analog stick.

Even worse is the combat itself. While it doesn't help that everything breaks on you in the almost worst possible moment, switching weapons and gear is a chore in how the buttons are configured. That's as unintuitive as running. I'd rather open a menu and scroll through it then pressing two buttons while trying to choose the right weapon with a third one.

Finally, the biggest no-go for an action-orientated game the complete absence of an "evade button". You can block attacks with a shield, but if you don't have one you're screwed. Because there is no dedicated evade method you have to run to not get hit, using that stupid button layout, while also trying to get closer to attack. That results in getting hit by enemy attacks a lot, because they have a god-like precision and many hit like a truck, even with a literal pebble causing you to have to deal with even more unintuitive menus to access healing items.

    Conclusion:
I can't recommend anyone to play this game at all because combat and controls are abysmal. Even the most difficult Souls-likes have much better gameplay and are more enjoyable despite their difficulty.

All the old mechanics are back. And all the terrible mechanics are back. They lied about there being dungeons like the old zelda games, it is very much like the divine beasts. They really just rehashed the last game. If I had never played BOTW before, I would have been ecstatic. But it feels like I'm playing the same game, with the same formula all over again.

They took BotW and cranked up the bullsh*t tenfold with the Zonai devices and mandatory weapon fusing. I played it on a Switch emulator with unlimited weapon durability (with 60fps on 2K) so I can't even imagine the tedium normal players have to endure.

My main issue with the latest Zelda games is a lack of direction (even though I absolutely love Elden Ring where I was constantly lost). Yes, the game throws some objective markers at you but it's still overwhelming. That combined with it's lack-luster combat, unrewarding gameplay loop, boatload of puzzles and ungodly amount of walking make this a dreadful experience, the cumbersome mechanics of the Ultra-Hand and Zonai devices just added to my frustration.

It is what it is, I don't like Baldur's Gate 3 either, it's too slow. My ADHD brain needs quick and constant stimulation otherwise I'm out, no matter how highly praised it is by critics and the general populace.
Give me a weapon, some enemies to kill (with a good combat system) and I'm good. Leave the "wandering around aimlessly" and "finding what to do next" parts to real-life, or at least make it worth my while. None of the places look interesting or memorable.

In conclusion, for me this game is boring, frustrating and tedious.

If you relate to how I feel:

Don't let the internet make you play a game you don't like, just accept that you're different and move on.

I'd like to discuss some important points about Tears of the Kingdom that I think the reviews were lacking to clearly explain, and it is necessary to clarify the flaws in advanced to set up players expectations.

Float islands: while the trailers and the marketing massively showed the air lands, it is just the tutorial of the game and you are gonna finish it in 2 hours. There are some small floating island through the game, but they are not so big or interesting.

Map: the map of the game where you are gonna play 80 to 90% of the game is exactly the same. You are gonna spending uncountable hours looking for new korok seeds and new shrines at random places. I do feel a little disappointed here, cause I was expecting more of the floating islands or some significantly change in the original map. But not, you are gonna play the same game twice, but with a new story. There are a new place that I will not mention here (to let people discover while playing), but it unfortunately is not so interesting.

Story: the story is brand new and captivating. Every location shows the passage of time and people remember you when you approach. You will most of the time, follow the story buy a way like the memories in Breath of the Wild, finding places and seeing a scene.

New powers: here is where I think Nintendo spent most of the time developing the game. The new powers, in special the Ultra Hand, let players use the game as an amazing sandbox. You can craft unimaginable things and solve problems in creative ways.

Overall, I think this game would be great if Breath of the Wild didn't exist, but it does. Tears of the Kingdom felt to me like a copycat trying to monetize through the success of its predecessor. This game is worthy playing if you give some years between Breath and it, ir order to forget most of the map. I can not imagine other franchise to imitate so hard its predecessor, using the same map, and critically being so acclaimed by media. Sometime I think reviewers are afraid of Nintendo stopping sending game to them if they give bad reviews.

TotK starts with 4 shrines (last one snow) to get 4 spirit orbs disguised as light spheres, led by the ghost of an old hyrule king. First power up you learn in BOTW is magnet which allows your to float items through the air, first power up you learn in TotK is ultra hand which is basically the same thing. Sheikah slate is the same thing as the purah pad. Skyview towers are the same thing as the Sheikah towers, but rather than figuring out how to climb them, it’s just opening a door then a long winded animation of being slingshotted up into the air and falling back into that zone of the map. The Ascend power up is annoying with having to watch a long animation and then press “escape” when it finally goes through. The time reverse power up is pretty cool, but I’d rather have stasis and the bombs from BOTW. Climbing in the rain was always a very annoying feature of BOTW but it could easily be circumvented by advancing the story and getting revali’s gale early. Looks like they’ve taken that away and your best bet is roaming around and finding fallen rocks and doing time reversal on them. Or finding shelter and passing time at a fire, which was always tedious. Or sticky frog potion. Getting a power up that made it not as hard was much more rewarding. Also a bad problem to double down on. Story is a lazy, predictable “let’s take all your powers away”. Sky world was already done in probably the worst main game in the series, skyward sword.

I haven’t played enough to get the hang of the vehicle building yet. So I can’t judge that. The shrines and the Korok seeds were a neat, new experience in BOTW, but they’re just slightly amped up but very similar ideas in this “new” game that took 7 years and multiple delays to come out. That’s crazy they delayed it so much only for it to look and play pretty much exactly like an old wiiU game. Not to mention the frame rate peaking at 30fps and often dropping way below that into being super choppy. Not sure I’ve ever been so disappointed in a game

If you're a classic zelda fan that's itching for classic dungeons you can spend hours in trying to figure them out this game isn't for you (slightly larger unique looking divine beast is about all we got). 3. If you hated the weapon breaking in botw this is even worse because it both has weapon breaking which wasted enough time but now you have to waste even more time to "fuse" stuff to weapons just to be effective at battle. ---- the world is great, the exploring is great, just like botw but the rest of it I'd lacking and really does feel like DLC. BoTW was a great one time departure from the Zelda franchise but many of us are ready for a real Zelda game not a Zelda skinned open world game. Not saying the next Zelda can't be open world but it actually needs to have Zelda gameplay in it... dungeons, items you actually need to work for, meaningful weapon and gear upgrades (that don't break), a higher sense of fantasy. The Zelda formula is timeless and has proven itself over and over again, I'm not against change but I am against upended an entire franchise people love for something "new" and completely forgoing homage to the past.

The game feels like a cheap cash-grab, compared to other games especially with the 6 years of development. Its compares more to a "Fan made mod" to Breath Of The Wild, than a stand alone game.

The gimmic of crafting quickly becomes tedious and repetitive, and just sticking a stone on the end of a stick, or placing a mushroom on your shield gets old and quite frankly both look horrendous and feel super lazy from a developing perspective. Where as some weapons actually take on a new look when combined, other quiite simply have said item stick out, looking like an eye sore.
You would expect so much better from the Zelda franchise, it certanly made legendary games before, this just feels like a last cash grab before they let go of the brand and moves on.
It could have been a great game, even though this new format is not my cup of tea, but i cant fathom how little have been done during 6 years in development, when you have free mods for games like skyrim, made up by a small team of ~5 individuals which remodels and change the basegame to a bigger degree than this changed the original BOTW, it feels like a fan made mod, and it does not justify its price tag.
There is ofcourse some fun to be had playing, but it bores too soon, and for the price its a rip-off

You would have to consciously decide to spend 10 minutes building a car when you could just walk over there in 2 minutes. My favorite franchise turned its mainline games into an open world gimmick and instead of the fans rejecting it like they should’ve, it was pandered too. I can only hope that Nintendo paid for and manipulated social media influencers to act like the game was an evolution for the franchise and the sheep did the rest. If not, then you got what you deserved with this game. Waste. Expand

The game also Feels too similar to BOTW but definitely and improved version or how it should have been.
The Depths are wonderfully designed but soon the amazingness dissapear when you realize they are 95% empty with most of it being optional and filled with fillers. The final battle is very dissapointing, you basically kill ganondorf just shooting arrows to his head and the dragon doesn’t do anything, like most of the game its all about looking pretty and cool but leaving a a shallow experience. overall it’s an entertaining game to play but far away to being a masterpiece like it was ocarina’s majora’s, twilight and even windwaker.

This game is only fun, for people who have not had the joy of trying something better. This game is bread, sure it is decent, but not compared to ice cream.

The dungeons in this game are great, the shrines (or at least most of them) are great. Every other element in this game is designed to only cause you suffering. The number 1 rule of video games is that they should be fun, it is literally in the definition of game. Yet for some reason Nintendo decided that you can't have fun until you earn it.
What does earn it entail, well you must walk in a straight line for 2 hours to get to the fun. Don't bother fighting enemies, they only use up your resources, making you have to stop on your long boring walk to the content to go gather more resources.
Is that a tough enemy blocking your way, run past it, can't? Then go make food, where is the nearest cooking pot? 2 hours in the other direction. Honestly Nintendo could have saved so much time and money by just making the dungeons and shrines and having a loading screen in between each one that just says "SCREW YOU" because that is what the rest of the game is.
Breakable items were probably added to encourage experimentation, unfortunately there is just a best weapon combo because all weapons are the same, just with different damage numbers, so no need to experiment. All breakable items do is encourage players to not engage with the combat in the game, because even when you win, you lose (your items).
Stamina might as well not exist, until you upgrade it you can (slowly) run for 2 seconds then wait 3 for it to refill. And, just in case you want to try and run a little longer than 2 seconds, Nintendo yet again says screw you by making you walk so slow that it would have been faster to just not sprint at all.
What about horses, well, if you go out of your way to get one (or bring one over from botw) it can save you some boring walking time, but not much as the game map is so vertical and the horses are not able to follow you, meaning you can only really use them around the plains, so you can't use them to get to a single freaking dungeon.
Surely gliding is better, no, stamina means you can only glide short distances and you don't recover stamina while falling so, once it is empty you are done gliding, Nintendo doesn't care that you think gliding is fun, you must play the game in the way they want, this isn't your game, and you can't do anything about it except not play.
Zonai devices fix this right? Absolutely not, did you make a really cool flying machine, vehicle, etc. do you like using it, well screw you it's gone. All Zonai devices have a short time limit that they can be used, for instance, do you not want to fast travel to a cooking pot, then slowly walk back to the "content" of the game, well you can use a Zonai instant pot (assuming you have one in your inventory which requires gathering items, going to a specific pot shaped location, and gambling to see how many pots you get out of the literal gaptcha machine, o yeah, you might as well just fast travel to a cooking pot and skip the middle man). Then finally, you have your instant pot and are ready to cook your meals without leaving the content, nope, screw you again, it can cook 1 meal, then it is gone. 1 meal in this game is basically nothing, imagine 1 healing potion in any other rpg and that is what 1 meal is.

So yes there is some fun to be had, but only if you are willing to slog through the most boring, tedious, monotonous bull crap that video games have to offer. Literally every other entertainment medium (books, movies, etc.) have learned to skip the slowly walking parts of the adventure, but for some reason video games have still not learned how to make getting from content to content fun (with a few exceptions, most famously Infamous).

Nintendo is going with quantity over quality with those new Zelda games since BOTW (at least BOTW was kinds fun cause it was new). But TOTK is just super repetitive with a boring story.

The game had about 6 years old development time and aside from few very fun new abilities (the very beginning of the game is actually pretty new, fun and refreshing) : after about 40 hours of gameplay you just don't know what to do anymore cause again : the open world is just big to be big. Nothing impressive there aside from a few charming places (like little village etc...). The open world trend is worth it when it's packed with great content like on Elden Ring ! Otherwise it's better to go with the linear approach like in previous Zelda games (Ocarina of time and Twilight princess for example). Conclusion : TOTK is fun at the beginning of the game. But then you quickly understand that you have no goal, you are going nowhere and you just do the " shrines " over and over and over and over again .... TOTK is the definition of a repetitive video game .

    Could have been much better.

The story is already not the best, but the entire plot twist got ruined for me because I watched the memory from lurelin village which quite literally directly showed me that zelda was a puppet. Like botw where they turned physic gimmicks into a core game mechanic, they turned building stuff out of random junk into a mechanic. Sure you can fiddle around all day if you like, but it feels more like a sandbox than an actual fleshed out game. Having to do another set of "shrines" is inexcusable. Almost every reward or treasure chest is some type of consumable that is not special or unique. There are still only 4 "dungeons" that are laughably easy to get through. There is no reward for the time you spend fiddling around or jumping through the lame story's various hoops.
It's almost like they released botw and then instead of starting another new project, they just decided to continue development on botw. Then towards the end of development, they realized they needed a story and had someone throw one together they could shoe-horn onto the game and all its additional features.

If you really feel you have to buy it don't pay 70$ for it, better spend that money on the lottery or so. Depending on condition you shouldn't spend more than 50-55$ on this atrocity. It's just the same game, same problems but different name. Sadly TotK only contains the same core problems of BotW with new, fancy mechanics that are actually useless where it counts (more on that below) instead of actually addressing the customers wish and solving the problems. It was pretty much to be expected. Nintendo doesn't care about their customers as long as they buy their s*it I guess that's just everywhere in capitalism but it dissapoints. The last GOOD (3D) Zelda (not counting remakes and HD remasters) is now over a decade old (I'm talking Twilight Princess).

Now, let's go down the list, shall we?
    1. Questmarker still only show the quest giver not the objective/objective area causing you to be lost more often.
    2. Until late in the game when you have maxed out armor enemies will easily kill you in a few hits and they like to swarm you making it more unlikely you life. That enemies get substitute with stronger color swaps and equipment as you progress will assure you will keep on dying.
    3. Speaking of Equipment, the game still ruins the fun with the durability system who just discourages the player to interact with anything moving (like 5 times as bad as BotW as you'll learn if you read more) and it's a 5 year old game from basically 2 Gens ago (since I wouldn't really call the Switch last gen on a technical level). There is ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON TO NOT GIVE OUT AT LEAST WEAK BASE EQUIPMENT TO THE PLAYER THAT DOESN'T BREAK OR NEEDS RECHARGING so players aren't left hanging if an enemy needs more hits than the weapons currently on you can take. Sure you can use "Fuse" to get SLIGHTLY stronger weapons but since you can't fuse Melee weapons or Shields with anything from the inventory directly and always have to first put down the material then fuse, it is pointless in active battle once the strengthening parts break off. Heck, even your Shield is as good as useless because enemies just hit through it when you hold it up, as if it wasn't even there, no matter what kind of weapon they use.
    4. This time it's 150 shrines aka puzzle rooms and 1000 Koroks to find and you need 400 something to max out slots.
    5. Then even with about 6 years passed in-game almost no one remembers the Hero who ended the apocalypse?! Attracting new players? If you do a direct sequel you do it for the fans it already has not to attract new players. Otherwise you only piss off the fans and won't get many new faces that haven't come with the first game.
    6. World is still big and mostly empty with more pointless empty space filled by the Sky Islands that are even more annoying to get from place to place since they are not connected in any way, shape or from to navigate other then gliding. Even less is going on in the depths asides endless darkness and a couple of extra bosses. The land of Hyrule in TotK is 80% monotonous, repetitive, filler landscape. What makes TotK worse than BotW in that regard is the depths itself are like 95% filler land because the few "dungeons" in it could easily be handled in a contained room and would save you the boring walking into them and the Sky Islands are also so much filler landscape. BotW/TotK has the BIGGEST YET MOST BORING DESIGNED HYRULE WORLDMAP since the later eighties where old ass, 8bit NES debut of the IP was. Further you still don't really want to explore the world for prices or discoveries because in most cases, you waste more resources than you get back. You won't even get a sense of accomplishing if you still choose doing so.
    7. Before I forget, what's with that stupid money and material grind?! The franchise IS SUPPOSED to be fun exploration and unique puzzle solving, not a monotones drag of money and material grind. You LITERALLY ARE FORCED TO save-scum because material drop rate is so absurdly low.
    8. We still only get puzzle rooms and mini-dungeons for the story. At least bosses are much cooler this time around.
    9. From my 370 hours when seeing the credits, most was spent traversing boring landscape and searching for ANYTHING interesting, even knowing the general area and only 15 hours actual game.

Really though, DON'T BUY THIS TRASH HEAP OF PROGRAM CODE FOR FULL PRICE, because YOU WILL REGRET IT. I can't believe I made it through the whole game, though there was NO WAY I tried to do it by my own exploration without Internet help. It's just too much of a torment to play the game and try to find everything or just the bare minimum to reasonably get through yourself.

Nope, magic dance and finding seed, in very repetitive ways.
then there's the NPC's that transform into mega annoying enemies that don't give you much useful stuff. what does that teach me nintendo? it teaches me that I get punished for talking to NPC's, so naturally, I don't feel safe to talk to NPC's any more. genius move.
Oh yes, then there is the GODDAMN GATHCA MACHINE, which has me wasting the resources I collected, just to try and get one of each item, I don't play games for gambling mechanics, this is reprehensible.
The amazing stuff you can make, disappears if you walk too far from it, some of them even disappear midway through using them.
If you want to ride a horse to travel faster, you can't use fast travel because the horse can't fast travel, except that is, if you go to a stable, where it can then be teleported from one stable to another... there is no logic to this.
I go to trouble of exploring, to see if I find something interesting, and what's my reward? another bloody shrine, where i can solve a puzzle to get a light orb, to go to a statue, to choose either heart or stamina.... another convulted bit of BUSYWORK, rather than actually finding tangible things in the world like heart pieces.
zelda used to be fun exploration that had a sense of discovery, but I don't feel much DISCOVERY from finding another damn shrine, or whatever collectable or currency is flavour of the moment.

It is fun for like 30 minutes then just becomes boring then you ride it out cause you want to believe that it gets better but it truly just never does. Stamina and weapon damage are also just the worst, Botw had this too but people complained about this last time as well and are constantly listed as the only negatives to the game and yet the sequel doubles down on it and even adds the Zonai energy (which is just stamina for devices)..... Great Sky Island was beautiful and colorful and felt fresh until it slowly starts to creep in, as you progress in the game, that barring a few changes this is the EXACT SAME GAME.

    Zelda is absent.

The story is told through memories.

The Calamity is now called The Upheaval.

Weapon durability still exists, but worse all the weapons have decayed so you have to glue goofy **** to them so you can hit something more than six times.

All the Sheikah slate abilities are swapped for different but equivalent Zonai abilities.

    Complete shrines to get orbs.

Collect 4 orbs to upgrade health/stamina.

They're so similar Nintendo could have released them at the same time like Pokémon Games do. Instead of Pokémon Red or Blue you would have Legend of Zelda: Breath or Tears. Do you want crafting mechanics? Pick Tears. Or do you want action mechanics? Pick Breath. The differences outside of that are minimal and superficial.

I just can't believe I paid $90+ CAD when I could have just kept playing Breath of the Wild. I thought this would be the safest game to pre-order of all time, after how great BOTW was. And yet having been burned a few times in the past by pre-ordering, I somehow got burned again.

The map is huge, but empty, both in the air, in the dungeons and the base, which means a large amount of time spent waiting to start a mission. Fighting enemies can be frustrating, taking time to figure out what's actually going on, without there being a way to switch objectives between enemies. Also, enemies can kill the player with one shot and there is no level gauge, increasing the difficulty level. In summary, the 10/10 rating is excessive compared to the boredom that characterizes the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Update: After 105 hours, finished the game. The depths are an afterthought, you just need to do enough there to gain batteries and complete a couple of quests and the rest is pointless. The story is also an afterthought: let's be clear, there is no path to the story which can be summed up as: intro cinematics, getting your companions, expanding your stash and unlocking regions, defeating bad guy, end cinematics *** credits *** more end cinematics. The number of main quests is actually extremely small, and the number of side quests is actually mostly fillers, barely more. The game is made to make you grind and watch the load screen to get a couple of items to be strong enough to defeat the bad guy at the end. Many times in the quest there are either issues with translations, or plain logic. As mentioned it's not a true open world as there is no story progression through your exploration of the map. FPS drop throughout the game is truly unbearable and the hindrance of your companions is also unbelievable annoying. It is said that repetition is the key to comedy, well this game is the plain demonstration: what a joke.

Update: played the game for 60+ hours, it’s empty, grindy, and repetitive to give a semblance of depth to this game. It’s a very empty and soul-less game. The stuttering and fps drop is really annoying, same as the cut scenes (if you’ve seen the cutscene for a shrine once, twice or three times, you just end up mashing the controller’s buttons). Thank god there are duplication bugs to help getting food and coins rapidly, because this game is worst than a chore. It’s bad enough that I start to root for the antagonist… it’s really not an action or rpg game, barely a Minecraft clone with unnecessarily idiotic puzzles).

I don't get the hype: the game is ugly, stutters, lags (controler or joycon response is... slow), and the world is empty with inconsistent use of voice acting.

Game mechanics are incredibly poor (doing a simple 360 takes 4 seconds, looking around to 'solve' the puzzles is equally enragingly long), no possibility to tune any game parameter or remap anything, it's worse than a PC game designed in the early 2000 and it's not refreshing to see pixelated shadows.

The use of some kind of cell shading to mask the low capacity of the console as well as using supersaturated textures with a mix low polygon models with high quality particles makes the game appear even weirder.

I've tried playing this game but every 5 minutes I quit since it's really just not that good and it's not even trying to be good nor modern in any sense of the term: it's like playing a game of watching the paint dry using one hand and wondering why this kind of stupid controller setup is.

I get it, people like to play games that basically play themselves, do not require any kind of character development, skills, or involvements so they just enjoy watching pretty colors playing in front of their eyes but I think there is a limit to that kind of mindlessness. Even games like the sims 1 have more depth!

Another theory for those justifying the time it takes to pass the "tutorial" section is the sunk cost fallacy: a self justification not to face the fact they wasted money and time. As such they need to self justify, and justify to the eyes of others, having wasted their time.

Interesting fact, just checked and most of the new 10/10 scores are from users with zero other rating or review. In this case, I'd look at the 4000+ positive reviews as being highly suspicious. Maybe 10% of genuine positive and the rest being bots or paid fake accounts.

The combat system in this game is probably THE absolute worst I have ever had to deal with in any game, let alone a Zelda one. The combat feels extremely mean spirited. Most of the time the dodge window don't feel intitive or responsive and even when you are in the early part of the game, enemies often seem to deal ridiculous amounts of damage that can kill you in one strike. Big for nothing. Pretty empty. The time of play is artificially inflated by weapons system and traveling.
    Not worth the price

If you enjoyed Breath of the Wild, this is basically that game with some tweaks to the mechanics, and an increased color-saturation, for some reason (seriously, why?). This is honestly just an expansion being billed as a full-on sequel. Its an okay game... not great... not terrible... NOT worth $70.

This game is has all the problems present in Breath of the Wild. None of the issues were addressed such as the weapon break system. This can be attributed to how mega fans of the first game calling Breath of the Wild a flawless masterpiece so Nintendo didn't bother to fix anything. This game has the same map as the first and the same recycled animations.

The low score is because this is not what a Zelda game is. Again we got this pathetic attempt to emulate a Ubisoft game but with Zelda slapped on it. Had Nintendo chosen to make this a new IP, we would still have our classic 3D Zeldas. But the game would not have done as well.

I just can’t believe that some people reviewers rate a game on a switch 96 out of 100, with graphics from 20 years ago, that’s not even funny anymore, In 2023 playing at 500px what is that ? 30 fps is atrocious and sometimes dips below that... Nintendo's games are being held back by their hardware.

Tears of the Kingdom is another massively overrated Nintendo game but, this time, is even worse, because it's basically DLC that recycles the same map with additional barren areas. The voice acting still is awful, embarrassing and minimal because Nintendo didn't want to pay for more than 1% of the lines. Zelda's voice is cringe-worthy, again. This sequel is the same thing but more expensive. Weapons still break like glass and the UI still is a nightmare that you have to deal with constantly during the action. The story is hollow and pointless and the NPC and side quests are all boring. The game is not really a The Legend of Zelda game but an indie sandbox game like Breath of the Wild but with more sandbox elements like fusion, limited and boring vehicle building and so on. The "dungeons" that are mentioned by the critics that say that this game is a masterpiece are even worse than in the prequel. The music is still minimal and also recycled and the graphics are ever worse with worse performance. Gameplay is boring and frustrating and story is bare-bones. Let's be real, what would the score be if this game wasn't made by Nintendo and the critics were impartial and professional? Tears of the Kingdom is shamelessly overrated just like Breath of the Wild. I am a Zelda fan and these two games aren't what I consider Zelda games and are not masterpieces either. There is no doubt on my mind that Nintendo has influenced the critics and that their fans are defending things that they wouldn't defend if the games were made by another company. Expand

I loved Breath of the Wild. While it is a great game, it's not perfect, and Nintendo really had an opportunity to improve upon the foundation laid out by BOTW with a direct sequel...instead they chose to play it completely safe and rerelease BOTW as TOTK. I call this game "Copy/Paste - Find and Replace". Here are just a few examples:

    1. The music is almost completely copy pasted

    1. The music is almost completely copy pasted throughout the entire game; I think I noticed 5 new themes while playing.
    2. Ascend rune is just Revali's Gale but now it goes through solid matter.
    3. The time rune no longer freezes time but moves time backwards slowly.
    4. You wake up in a shrine with zero powers.
    5. You start on the “Great” area and can’t leave until you gain your 4 base powers.
    6. Zelda is missing for some reason.
    7. Zelda's Memories are now called Dragon’s Tears.
    8. You have to complete Zonai Shrines instead of Sheikah Shrines to open up warp points.
    9. You have to find all the same armor sets.
    10. You go to each race's region to beat a themed dungeon.
    11. You have to collect stupid Korok seeds.
    12. Weapons are very very fragile (possibly more so than BOTW).
    13. You gather the four Champions to help you fight Ganon.
    14. You have to remove “Corruption” within each race’s region.
    15. You have to complete a dungeon in each race’s region.
    16. Sheikah Towers are now Skyview Towers.

The only new gameplay aspect in this entire game is the fusing/crafting system, which is so needlessly finnicky and restrictive as to deter me wanting to use it. I hope you like building long planks as a ramp or bridge, because that’s largely all you do. Sure, you can build vehicles to your heart’s content, but you have a limited “energy” meter that drains within 5-10 seconds meaning you cannot actually USE any of those vehicles for any meaningful length of time. How do you upgrade your energy meter? Grinding. Lots of grinding. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to grind for 20-30 hours just to improve a **** battery. I want to enjoy a Zelda game, not play an MMO.

Another thing that bothers me is that all of the shrines are stupidly easy. There wasn’t a single one that even /remotely/ used the new mechanics in interesting ways. Nintendo is so proud of its new crafting system that solving a puzzle often times, you guessed it, means you build a ramp or a bridge to cross a gap. Whoopdie damn do.

The temples are seriously the worst in the series. They are all THE SAME TEMPLE, with variations on “how many buttons do I need to press”? You just wander around until you find a button, then you press it. Do this a few times, fight the boss. Temple over. There are no puzzles, no items, no thought. It’s just so incredibly lazy, and I don’t know why they designed them this way.

And why is Zelda relegated to not being a character in this game? In BOTW she was very sympathetic, compelling, and well written. In this one they make her disappear and then she doesn’t have any character change or growth throughout the entire game. She’s there to be a magical mcguffin, and it’s just sad. I wanted her to play a larger role, help Link alongside him this time around, maybe even contribute to gameplay. Nope. Go sit on the sideline and do nothing, Zelda. You aren’t important.

I criticize this game because I know Nintendo is capable of more, and quite frankly this game is just creatively empty to me. Same map, same gameplay, same exact story, same beats…and apparently it took them over 6 years to make. I keep asking myself, how is that possible? I don’t have an answer.

I completed BotW and I'm almost to the end of TotK so I believe I have the right to stress my disappointment with the game:
    - Game feels more like a MOD of the original than a true sequel (more like BoTW 1.5).
    - Story is again pretty shallow, characters are one dimensional and it's hard to care for them. - It is pretty much a rehash of the old one with much more meaningless side-quests

    - Build system everyone is so stoked about is nothing new and is not implemented very well.
    - Puzzles are too simple and formulaic for adults.
I wander, maybe I'm just too old, kids do find the game fun to play. Still I'm certain this does not deserve universal praise it is receiving from critics, something smells fishy...

Unfortunately like BOTW, this game falls short of everything that makes Zelda magical; it's all hype and fluff, with no substance. If you just want to play a sandbox game on hardware from 7 years ago with graphics to match, sure get this game. But if you are looking for an epic Zelda adventure this is not it.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
