Breath of the Wild itself was a breath of fresh air. It in itself spawned an entirely new style of open world games that have been copied and iterated upon a countless number of times.

Tears of the Kingdom, however, feels as if it's nothing more than an expansion we'd have previously gotten with other titles. 2 new half zones added, one above and one below and a new gimmick to play

Especially on hardware that can barely support the title.

Is it fun? Yeah. Is it worth it for the price? Most definitely not.

I like it more than BOTW but barely… it’s really the same game with a lot more content. What happened with the Zelda I know and love. Skyward Sword started the downward trend but at least the dungeons were good. for a perspective… Majoras mask > Lttp > ocarina > twilight princess. All amazing dungeons.

this games dungeons are a little atmospheric but good god they are terrible.

They took 6 years to develop a game that its pretty much BotW with changes.

Much has already been said. Nintendo believed in their own propaganda they paid for back then in 2017. And this is why this game is what it is. And now, after they bought reviews for TOTK again, Anouma promises more "open world Zelda games". And all this knowing the open world formula was already dead in 2017 and BoTW was just boring walking simulator.

Whether you call BOTW or TOTK spinnofs, or DLC, fact is that we still don't have new Zelda since 2012. Therefore let's hope some indie studio will eventually fill this void.
After so many years and seeing what they're doing, there is no point waiting for Nintendo. They clearly became clowns. Just let them live their Clown World.

Ok, It's Zelda but the visual department is very, very long in the tooth. This was fine in 2005, but it's 2023 now. It's time to demand more from Nintendo like we do from Playstation and Xbox.

How the heck this can have nearly 9 points? This game is BORING, even worse than BOTW. Since the beginning you are dropped in a dead world with barely nothing in it, sanctuaries are boring as hell, mechanics are terribly slow, butter-weapons mechanic is still there... Wasted 60€.
If you want a real Zelda experience play Link's awakening, that at least feels like a real zelda and not this crap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An overrated sequel to an overrated game.

For Fallout, Skyrim, and Ubisoft fans this The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will delight players. For fans of Zelda, Dark Souls, Castle Vania, Metroid, the story is different for some.

To begin this game takes place on the same map assets wise as the previous game. It uses the same terrain just with some slight differences such as sky islands, and the depths. The overworld is mostly the same, the shrines are in similar, if not the same spots as the original game, and there is a new addition "Dungeons/Temples?".
For those criticizing the trailers I'm sad to say you were mostly right that this game is pretty much a DLC in sheep's clothing.
The game again ditches the traditional Zelda formula and lacks features from previous games and adds new mechanics that flat out break the puzzle solving aspects of Zelda as a whole. With the new building mechanic you are able to pass complex puzzles and problems with ease to the point where it feels like you are cheating and breaking the game. For me this breaks the immersion of puzzle solving and completely thwarts meaningful reward to gameplay which seems to be a common theme in this game.
The dungeons are short, lack luster, and feel disjointed. They do not convey the feeling that someone spent months carefully crafting complex puzzles that require critical thinking, but rather a short 15 minute trial of "put square box in square hole". As you progress through these dungeons there is no progression. It is single puzzle, single boss, receive your upgrade and leave.
The game is somewhat broken. The performance issues are glaring including crashes, low framerate, long loading screens, corrupted saves, and lost progress. Some small complaints that break the game too would be after acquiring the sages into your arsenal they constantly follow you with buggy AI at all times. You cannot put them away by force and as a result an accidental tap of the a button could break you from sneaking up on an enemy, to alerting the horde.
Koraks are back, and more annoying than ever now that you have to complete long drawn out carry me to my objective missions that are just a plain waste of time.
All weapons still break and further complicate the crafting mechanic so weapons that you grind to get feel less satisfying to have knowing that they are forfeit unlike any previous Zelda game.
As for the story it came off as melodramatic and came off to me like the cutscenes from Metroid Other M or a Scene from Ninja Gaiden, honestly not really worth talking about. Ganon is the bad guy because he's a jerk and a meanie. Zelda time travels to stop him, and works with the previous rulers of Hyrule to do so. Doesn't get more complex than that.

Overall this game feels like only a minor upgrade from Breath of the Wild, and the argument of DLC seems to reign true here. In the future I would like to have non-breakable weapons and have abilities rewarded to you as you play, rather than having them handed out to you right from the beginning without earning them. Gaining new abilities in games should reward the player by adding complexity to gameplay rather than aiding the playing by making the game less difficult.

Another flop Zelda game for me, I rate 4/10 for still being a fun game minus the Zelda title.

BotW was 10/10 in my opinion. It brought on something new and fresh. Tears of the Kingdom is reusing the same world, music and most assets from BotW. It feels, as several others have pointed out, like a DLC for BotW. I would have given it a higher score if the game was priced reasonably, but it's not ($70 for a "DLC").

So.. am I reviewing Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom? You’ll never know.. because the first few hours of TotK gameplay are LAZILY identical.

Korok seeds, shrines, towers for visibility? There's zero added structure/innovation to the game's functionality. Everyone is fawning over a reskin with some new tools/powers that are even less 'Zelda' than they were in BotW.

Frame drops, clunky menuing and abilities, lack of meaningful storyline, and Zelda lore retconning drags the score of this game down substantially for me.

If you’re a traditional Zelda fan then I’d recommend skipping this one in favor of playing through BotW again. $70 is way too much to ask for this glorified BotW reskin.

Expand

Ultimately though, I still feel that the structure of the game sucks. Playing the exact same Sage cutscene after every dungeon feels like a slap in the face. When you find memories scattered across the open world, they feel disjointed and didn’t really make me connect to the story that well. The new characters and Ganondorf himself felt underwhelming. The way that they completely ignore the events of Breath of the Wild as if it didn’t happen or happened a long time ago greatly annoyed me. The Depths just feel like a completely pointless addition that is only there as a way to farm Zonite ore to fuel your useless vehicles and not really find anything interesting besides Amiibo cosmetics. You will quickly get bored of exploring the Depths after 5 hours when you realize its mostly pointless with nothing to find. The final boss with Ganondorf is pretty well done, but I find it very ironic that they didn’t even force the player to use Ultrahand or any of the gimmicks to fight him and instead just felt like a standard fight where you spam flurry rush with good timing. Its almost as if the devs realized that they are just pointless gimmicks. You’re not forced to utilize any of your tools like the Hookshot or Light Arrows in previous Zeldas because they don’t exist anymore. As a Zelda fan for 30 years, this game made me depressed and lose a lot of confidence as a fan of this franchise and the gaming industry as a whole. The game sold very well and also reviewed well too. I really question what in the world are they seeing? I expect the developers to utilize the same principles in the next game because of the critical reception which makes me question if I should even stick around as a fan anymore or just quietly move on and say this series is no longer for me Expand

There are some issues with the core system of the game, the Ultra Hand. When exercising the Ultra Hand, the frame rate can become unstable and I feel stressed. It's annoying just replacing what was done in the previous work with the element of crafting.

I'm sorry, but I believe I speak for A LOT of Zelda fans when I say that the classic formula worked for a reason. The sense of dungeon-crawling and using items to solve puzzles is just not present in BotW or TotK. To make matters worse, the sandboxes of BotW and TotK are VERY MUCH identical. So similar to the point that if you takes out the visuals and story of TotK then it would very much look like a DLC of BotW.

Speaking of the story... it's awful. The base plot is repeated all over the place, the resolution looks like something that was written out of an anime fanfiction, and the voiced dialogue is so cringe that it makes me wish when the characters didn't speak in past titles. VERY frustrating when other Zelda games had much better lore.

Sidequests and their rewards are either meh or pointless altogether. Shrines are even easier than they were in BotW. Combat is still trivial most of the time. Weapons and shields still break way too easily. Dungeons are all "look for four parts of the puzzle to fight the boss". Past abilities and even some past characters are inexplicably missing. These thing combined with many more all come together to make a huge mess of a game.

If you're big into Minecraft or open-world sandbox games in general then you'll like the game well enough. Otherwise old-school Zelda fans (and even some fans of BotW) won't care for this game nearly as much. Bring back the old formula, Nintendo.

It's crazy what Nintendo can get away with even in 2023. Zelda: ToTK has no accessibility options whatsoever. Furthermore, the game uses the exact same world from the previous Zelda (BoTW) and the same combat, which makes the whole experience feels very similar without any significant changes. ToTK is nothing but an expansion to BoTW with few Quality of Life changes. I must also note that the game has absolutely poor performance and outdated graphics. It will dip below 20 frames (FPS) a lot. As well as a big portion of ToTK just feels dull, especially the early hours.

it boggles my mind this game is getting glowing 10/10s despite all of its flaws. Very dishonest review process we're seeing nowadays from critics. Any other game would have been slammed for these flaws, but because it's Zelda and a Nintendo game, we see excuses like "it's an old hardware" even though the hardware has nothing to do with the options. And it's Nintendo's mistake not releasing a more powerful console in 2023. They should be criticized for this, not let them get away with it constantly. Somehow their games are just held to different forgiving standards and excuses that we don't see applied to other games AT ALL.

Bottom line: if you didn't enjoy Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you will certainly not enjoy Tears of the Kingdom as it is very similar and uses many of BoTW's assets. Game doesn't deserve its 70$ price tag whatsoever.

I have spent the last 2+ hours trying to find my way to the temple after unlocking the first 3 shrines. How is that supposed to be enjoyable? Spending hours literally looking for a proper path to a destination? Overall, it's a serious step back from the last one and definitely not worth $70. Zelda deserves so much more than whatever this is.

but, if you enjoyed the first one, this is more of it. the mechanics can be fun, there's lots to explore, and it's very pretty.

The narrative is lackluster, with underdeveloped side characters lacking charisma and a storyline that fails to inspire.

Furthermore, the bosses, previously a highlight, now seem increasingly generic, lacking the originality and intrigue that characterized earlier installments. The game's saving grace is its customizability of builds and environment interaction, which offers some creative gameplay dynamics, but this is not enough to offset the other weaknesses.

The open-world format, a trend in gaming, here feels generic and lacks the unique touch that would differentiate it from countless other open-world games. In essence, Tears of the Kingdom feels like a missed opportunity, a game that took the right risks with its predecessor only to fall back on safer, less inspiring choices, resulting in an experience that is far from the revolutionary gaming experience that was Breath of the Wild.

However, there are two new overworlds to explore — there's not as much to them and they're both repetitive and mostly empty, but they're still new additions I guess. The new powers are fun, but feel goofy, clunky and in some ways made for the memes. That being said, the memes are hilarious, so again, silly and disappointing? For sure. Still fun? For a while.
Was hoping for some exciting new improvements to the botw system for the $70 price tag, but alas.
Overall, it's a really fun game for the first few hours, then the enjoyment steeply drops. Far from the best zelda title ever, it's over hyped and full of recycled content...
The UI is horrible. Do I really need to scroll through LITERALLY EVERY ITEM IN MY INVENTORY to select an attachment for my arrow FOR EVERY SINGLE SHOT?
The building mechanic, while interesting, is really pretty clunky and takes a long time to line things up just right if you're building something complex. If you're building something simple, it feels like filler content.
Combat is weak. Spend 15 minutes mastering perfect dodge and the game becomes a cake walk. But don't worry, it won't always work because your weapon will break after 15 uses, forcing you into another chore.
Lots of farming. Should have been named Tedium of the Kingdom.

TLDR: super repetitive. mostly recycled content. not the best zelda game. UI is awful.
One day, people will look back and feel foolish for praising what is ultimately a lazy cash grab by nintendo.

Honestly, if anything I'd class TotK as the embodiment of bad modern gaming. It's literally just a bad open world game, and if it didn't have the LoZ brand name attached it would be completely dismissed as trash by a lot of people. How this scored 10/10 with most mainstream critics is frightening.

This game is basically a giant DLC for BotW. I didn't care for the original when it came out, I found it to be quite boring and repetitive with a very lackluster story that I just couldn't bring myself to care about. Tears of the kingdom is unfortunately that same game re-gifted under a different title. The cel shaded graphics are nice to look at, and that's about the most praise I could give.

Bought the OLED TOTK switch and collectors edition of the game... Just to be so quickly disappointed only a few hours after gameplay. The end game "boss FIGHT"is placed in a good spot, but also so misplaced at the same time. Please don't tell me he just sits beneath the castle waiting for you the entire game??? Ganon is the main villain, reanimated to reap havoc but does nothing the entire game but sit beneath the castle waiting??... I'm no pro at all and somehow ruined my whole experience with the game in the first 2 hours...Check this.

You're granted access to the castle grounds in the first quest of the game right, you're basically walking around the floating castle next to the chasm from the start so I figure why not, let's save the game and jump down into this chasm to see if anything cool is down there and BOOM! what do you know, as long as you can run past a few goonies the end game boss is down there and you could beat the game then if there if you want... Are you *#%*# kidding me?? Is this because of speedrunners being a big thing in BOTW? If he's just beneath the castle the whole game, does that mean he doesn't even show his face at all the entire game or push back in any way? Start a war? Raise an army to fight back against the land of Hyrule and its hero's? Please tell me I'm speaking too soon and y'all havnt just ruined this game by trying to hard to make a replica of BOTW.

...makes no sense lore wise and in regards to BotW (missing divine beasts, missing sheikah, ...)
...patching master sword and duplication glitch shows Nintendo doesnt want you to have fun...
...objectively this cant even be 96.... 80% graphics, 60% music, 50% plot, 80% gameplay, freshness 60%... if this were a 96 there'd hardly be anything to criticise yet there is tons of stuff...
...no motivation to beat Ganondorf... does he even do anything remotely bad?! people live happily...
...ending could have been great but missed opportuniy with much too easy Zelda catching (also you fall in the water so without you she would have fallen in the water anyway...)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Queen Gibdo absolutely feels like nobody playtested this boss. I went in with ~30 arrows, thinking I'd be picking a bunch up during the fight, or that Riju would resupply me as the fight went on, but.... no. I ran out of arrows before even passing the 3/4 mark, and then I was stuck running around, unable to do anything. Now I have to go farm rupees, buy all the arrows from all across hyrule, then come back and MAYBE pass the halfway point before having to do it all again.

Speaking of rupees, there is virtually no passive gain like in other zelda games. Much like BOTW, enemies drop no rupees. You can't get rupees by cutting grass, either. The only way to get rupees is by doing quests and various activities, or by collecting valuable items to sell. In other words, you have to INTEND to get rupees, you have to take a break from the rest of the game to get rupees. A quest might give you about 100 rupees, which can buy 25 arrows, but most shops only stock 15, meaning you're going to go to two different shops to get your arrows. And for the amount of arrows that you have to stockpile before attempting Queen Gibdo? Prepare to retrace your steps through every single town you've visited so far to clean out their whole stock, while also taking breaks from that to farm for stuff to sell.

This game only built on the story of the previous, and none of the mechanics. Cooking is still the same slog of "Open inventory. Select ingredients. Exit inventory. Drop ingredients in pot. Watch 5 second cutscene. Get result. Open inventory. Select ingre-" You get the idea. Yeah the new powers are interesting, but probably like 90% of the map can be explored just by using Ultra Hand to build a long enough bridge out of whatever random stuff you find.

They kept virtually the same exact inventory/loot system, but now weapons degrade faster because they've all been 'decayed' by the Demon King. The sky islands and the Depths are probably the most interesting parts of the game, because they're the only truly NEW parts. I have so much more fun up/down there than I've ever had on the surface, which is a shame because the surface is where 99% of the story takes place.

Also, the final boss is always available to just... go fight. You just need to jump down into the hole under Hyrule Castle, which you can do as soon as you first make it to the surface, and there he is, welcome to the end of the game! Speedrunners are going to love this, they don't even have to trick their way through a maze of a castle, Nintendo literally gave them a hole straight to the end boss.

While young, it immersed me in a sense of adventure and whimsy I hadn’t experienced. Nintendo built on that formula for decades with varying degrees of success and despite initial criticisms (ie, Majora’s Mask and Windwaker). But Nintendo gambled and ultimately prevailed.

Not so here. Here, corporate profit was the only driver.

I’ve invested a number of hours into TOTK at this point, and I intend to play as close to completion as I can (perhaps out of habit or spite), but absent a drastic change in the gameplay, this game is a shadow of Breath of the Wild at best. Not only is the world literally the same, but the side quests are highly similar and the fundamental game mechanics are identical. More distressing is the continuing detachment of the story from the gameplay. While it might be vogue these days for games like Elden Ring to pursue a largely plotless story line, what has always given Zelda a leg up is the immersion of its players in its history, plot and outcome. TOTK perpetuates the increasing blandness of Hyrule both from the lack of impending doom brought by Ganon but also by the sheer number of pointless side quests (never mind the failure of Nintendo to invent new non-traditional Zelda plots).

I’ll close with this: I remember waiting at a Toys R Us when OoT was released to get a copy of the gold cartridge, and I bought a Nintendo Switch precisely so I could play BOTW. No more. Until Nintendo rejects the corporatist pattern of rehashing old IP and reembraces its commitment to develop Hyrule, its lore and the essence of what makes Zelda Zelda, I’ll be holding off on future purchases of both Nintendo systems and Zelda games. I refuse to contribute to the mediocritization of one of gaming’s most cherished franchises.

I also appreciate the originality of the Depths; no prior Zelda game has been set underground and had they placed a greater focus on that, perhaps the premise being that Link is trapped underground following the opening cinematic and has to work his way back up to Hyrule, it could've been incredible. The exploration aspect on its own can still be fun and lead to some humorous or gorgeous encounters.

In saying that, it inherits all the same annoyances as BotW - tedious game mechanics, constant stuttering frame rates, convoluted button inputs and delayed responses, repetitive and (mostly) fruitless side quests, a disjointed story, weak voice acting (to be clear I blame Nintendo's lazy direction for this, not the VAs themselves). But on top of all of BotW's half-baked assets, chucking in a souless Skyloft 2.0 and the under-utilised Depths makes TotK feel even more spread-too-thin than its predecessor.

As well as making the Depths more of a focus, I believe that making Zelda's moments playable would've really elevated this game. Spirit Tracks is the only Zelda game to date to have the player control Zelda, and I think a second one is long overdue. The context of THIS Zelda's journey in particular would've made for a brilliant way of keeping BotW's map while doing something SIGNIFICANTLY fresh with it.

The quests are uninspired and there is a lot of collect 50 of this find 50 of that just to bloate the game. The depths is extremely boring and lackluster and the sky island are almost non-existent. The four first temples are the same mechanic with a different skin, and the last tempel is some of the worst game design I have ever seen where you take all the stuff you have worked for and ignor it to ride one a robot. This hase to be the worst boss fight on Zelda history. The game is nothing more than an overpriced DLC for Breath of the wild.

It did not feel like a new experience from BotW, and definitely did not feel like 6 years of game development went into it.
There's hardly any new art in the game. It's mostly reusing old assets from the previous game in all aspects - from the environment to enemies. Most people are sold on the game being expanded upon greatly by the sky islands and the depths. A lot of these places use just a handful of modular assets, there is no true crafting of these structures by an artist. At this point they could've laid off the art team and would have delivered the same experience just about. I'm personally a game developer, and I can sniff out corner cutting a mile away. People say that the depths doubled the game's size. That's true in the literal sense, however I'm willing to bet money that this was generated off of an inverted height map from the hyrule surface, which takes zero time to do. Then was populated by the same few foliage assets, and a select few locations in there were hand-picked for some TLC in an attempt to try to make it seem like somebody cared for creating it. Generating an environment and foliage does not take too long, but the standard player probably won't notice and will still be impressed by the 'doubled-sized' game.

    Abilities:
Ultrahand: This was fun, overall I enjoyed the freedom to create things to help move around or attack enemies. It's the one thing that held the game's score up for me.
Ascend: This was convenient, but overall did not add any ground-breaking aspects to the game to really change how the game felt compared to BotW.
Recall: Objects did the thing they just did, but in reverse. Not necessarily something that sets this game above anything else.
Fuse: I find it lackluster. I see no difference in combat really compared to BotW. I still whack enemies to death, or whack boulders that are in my way with other boulders (on a stick). And when it comes to fuse+arrows, it's neat that items in your inventory have more of a use, however it's inconvenient to sift through all your items for the same 3 or 4 items you'll use. Even if you sort it, it doesn't make combat truly feel any different.
Autobuild: Good for my air bike, glad I didn't have to recraft it over and over again manually.

    Performance:
I'll give credit where it's due, mostly consistent 30 fps on a switch with a lot of these systems working is impressive, however come on Nintendo, we need a new device that's not stuck in the past. It's good that after creating BotW and forking off somewhere into development and overhauling for TotK, it managed to stay optimized for the most part. From what I saw BOTW started serious development back in 2013, so after 10 years total on a project (TotK IS forked from BotW and nobody can convince me otherwise), there was plenty of time to allocate to these optimizations. I just wish more time was spent in other areas though to make it feel like a new game.

    Story:
I won't spoil anything, but honestly not much would be spoiled. It's a Nintendo game. They're more known for solving puzzles versus creating a truly compelling story. I'm finished with my playthru of the game and I did a lot of side-quests, I'm convinced that I'll forget most of it by the end of next month, it's nothing to rave about.

    In the end:
General gameplay loop is alright, more or less the same as BotW which isn't bad necessarily. After playing through the predecessor and coming to this, I feel like it was not worth $70 though. It was the same game packaged again and everybody ate it up because it was hailed as the next Zelda game. If I didn't play BotW and if I didn't have my game developer background maybe I would have enjoyed this more. I can just see all the corners that were cut during gameplay, and it feels insulting to be a consumer of this. Not worth $70, not indicative of 6 years of work, 4/10. Congratulations, you implemented 1 cool feature with ultrahand and things are slightly more optimized.
I'm not going to just give a pass for huge companies that choose to cheat out the consumer.

An action RPG where you have to sift through menus during fights and not to make tactical decisions but because your weapon breaks 4 times in a fight against 3 enemies. In what world are we rewarding such a stupid mechanic with high praise. Also, it took 6 years to basically sell you the same game with some updated physics and skydiving.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? More like The Legend of Yawn: Tears of My Patience! This overhyped franchise keeps churning out the same recycled gameplay and tired puzzles. The so-called 'kingdom' is nothing more than an empty, lifeless world. Nintendo, please innovate or retire!

If you like the old Zelda games you will be disappointed. Combat is fun but there is so, so much walking and doing nothing. The Death Stranding of the Zelda franchise. And the world is pretty empty. Bring back the old Zelda style, cause this one isn't it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I knocked off a couple points because the game Auto updated on me despite constantly canceling the download. I was holding back on doing the update because Nintendo made rupees super scarce in this game and duping glitches offset that and make the game more fun for my play style. Any fun that I've derived out of this game comes from it being a carbon copy of Breath of the Wild. I dislike the new building mechanics and feel like the fusion mechanic stresses the already strained inventory system to the point of it being unfun. Overall the game just feels clunky and unfinished. Early on you'll probably build the best vehicle in the game which is a basic hoverbike, there's no reason to make any modifications after you get the perfect one because any added items will either make you slower or drain your battery faster and any modifications will increase the zonite ore you need to build it. This vehicle basically breaks the game allowing you to sidestep any dungeon puzzles or inconvenience. They didn't want to spend extra development time to make exit routes out of the many caves so they just added ascend so they didn't have to worry about it. They reversed the topography and lowered the brightness and boom you have the depths. All of the sky islands just sit there in the sky static. It's a very lazy product. There's a scene right after you get Auto-build where Master kohga says "you stole it, I wanted that ability," THEN HE USES AUTOBUILD IN THE BOSS FIGHT

The temples are just glorified shrines that are pretty much the same as the Divine beasts: find and activate terminals then return to the boss fight area. A lot of the time you'll end up reaching the temple and terminals before the sage does and so you'll have to backtrack to find an arbitrary cutscene event before they'll join your party and help you.

The shrines aren't as memorable as the ways that you have to cheese a lot of the puzzles to get them to work properly. Many times I've had to shoot a pressure switch with a bomb arrow because I couldn't get the ball to bounce in the right way. Many people say that the game should be commended because it lets you solve puzzles in multiple ways but to me that just says poor game design because the intended way to solve the puzzle is usually either obtuse or just difficult because of the clunky controls. The multiple ways of solving a puzzle pretty much comes down to: do you spend half an hour combing a shrine for a stepping stool to reach a shrine chest or do you just use a bomb or rocket shield? Gone are the gyro shrines and the tests of strength and they were replaced by... well they kind of forgot to add a third of the shrines because they're all blessing shrines, which for the most part is fine because a lot of those shrines getting to the shrine is the challenge in puzzle, it just feels like maybe if you have more than a quarter of your shrines just be gimmes you either need less shrines or perhaps give the light orbs out in a different way. Shrine's kind of all fall into the same category where it's just: build the thing, at least in botw when you needed a different shika rune the whole shrine had a different feel to it, before you had cryo-puzzles, stasis puzzles, magnesis puzzles, and bomb puzzles, now they're all just building puzzles. Ascend and rewind just feel like debug mode abilities. We never see Rauru coming up through the floor so it's really weird to consider that a zonai ability. It feels like Nintendo was trying to debug the game and realized how crappy and frustrating their game was so they left some debug tools in to make the game playable. That's probably why some of the rewind shrines are clever and well put together: because they were added late in the production. Also why the game doesn't let you leave the great sky Island until you get all the abilities: because the game is UNPLAYABLE without ascend, you'll fall into a well or a hole or a cave and WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CLIMB OUT unless you use ascend. When your game's playability is dependent on a single debug ability maybe thats bad game design? IDK it annoyed the heck out of me.

I was excited to pick the game up because I wanted to see what they did with the Ganondorf character and it was hugely disappointed when he's only in four cutscenes and the final boss fight. HUGE missed potential, the game didn't give him any clear motivations, he's just being evil for the sake of being evil AGAIN. It's also never really addressed how the Gerudo way of life has been changed and it just feels like Nintendo really drop the ball on world building.

Basically, you're fine playing this game if you're just expecting BOTW 2. I'm mostly giving this game a low score because I feel that the game was MASSIVELY overhyped with people saying that the game has endless content. After I'd been playing the game for a month I already had the game half finished, the game is FAR from endless.

The main thing about botw that I found interesting was the exploration, but that aspect is almost entirely absent from this game, as you know the map already, which is only slightly different.
Another gripe that I have with the game is that they added a lot of quests, which all feel like chores, e.g. "go talk to this guy, go back, go back to the guy again" or "collect ten frogs". The absence of such quests is what made me like botw, but this game feels much more like a 2010's ubisoft title.
    Everything is a chore.

And thus Zelda continues as the most overrated franchise in gaming. Glorified DLC for Breath of the Wild, which was already a game lacking in meaningful content and good gameplay. I do not understand the hype. Makes me wonder how this would be received if it didn't have 'Zelda' in the title or 'Nintendo' on the box.

    >Its the same area you can see in the trailer with Sidon!

    >There's a souvenir that depicts an earth globe but it's called "the universal fun balloon" which is a reference to the company making the Nintendo theme park at Orlando.

    >Zelda turns into a dragon after link has been killed off screen so she has to step in and access the secret power she had all along and save the day because the hero has nothing on a princess of wisdom (this is a exact line from the dub)

    Overall an unmitigated disaster.

This game is completely secondary, it reuses all it can from BoTW and is practically COMMITED to not saying anything new. It is essentially a huge time sink - ten times the amount of meaningless puzzles and other grind without an emotional core or overwhelming sense of discovery that made everything worth it in Breath of the Wild. The tutorials that were almost absent in the first game are now everywhere, you are drowned in text. The "fresh" core mechanic is building simple structures. If you find doing that over and over again to solve identical problems tedious, you will have a bad time. I personally find it irritating when the game constantly gives me obstacles like a wide chasm with prosaic building blocks on the side. It's like developers are more worried about their mechanic not being used enough than my immersion and flow. BotW was never THIS heavy-handed and prescriptive.

The story offers nothing of substance. Most of the time you are running around meeting old characters in new places on the map to get random quests. Even if you are curious of "what happened to that spot I liked", you will probably only find a Yiga hideout there for no reason. 90% of cinematics is Link staring at his hand or sword, even as something horrible is happening/just happened to his friend (Zelda). In BoTW almost every major character had a little character ark - Zelda (with self-doubt), Link (opening up), Rivali (pride), Sidon (grief), Mipha (unrequited love), Yunobo (courage), Paya (being assertive), etc, etc. Many characters had real flaws. I've watched streamers finish TotK, and it's as shallow as a bird bath. Most characters are content, all struggles come from facing an external enemy, everyone is dedicated to Link from the start so there is no tension in him winning them over, or when duty calls them. No relationships get meaningful developments, in fact it feels like friendships and love regressed from the first game.

To sum it up, Tears of the Kingdom is a huge time sink with massive copy-pasted areas and repetitive tasks, reskinned core elements, a few new mechanics that many will find tedious, and no interest for character development or telling a powerful story. I wish I could get a refund.

Not as good as expected. The positive pint is the fact that you can be creative as your imagination allows you, but Nintendo must learn that the technology evolves and power full hardware is needed. Plus there are some “hidden” messages about religion that can be disrespectful with some people. But, well, as a video game, the game is awkward and feels laggy and blurry.

The majority of the map is just a reshuffled map of hyrule from BOTW. Korock seeds and shrines are the main gameplay loop in the open world AGAIN. Finding towers to update the map, story told in pieces and just generally messing about in a massive soulless open world was all present in BOTW. The difference is at least it was initially fresh and exciting in BOTW as this was the first time for us players, and even that became repetitive and tedious as the game played out. Now we have a huge DLC expansion that asks us to do that all over again in a map mostly the same as BOTW. There is no more excitement of discovery when you realise that most of what you find in these massive maps is the same challenges recycled agin and again: korock wants to get to a friend, guy needs you to hold up sign, shrine in the distant which will reward you maybe a weapon and orb, towers in distant for map uncovering and so on. I’m addition to stagnation it also comes with its own issues. Performance issues like this is unacceptable for a game charging a next gen price. The new ultra hand ability while cool in theory is super finicky and frustrating to control. The camera is annoying especially when you activate ascend and it snaps upwards all of a sudden disorientating the player, they should have a camera zoom out like in xenoblade. Physics are annoying especially when trying to craft something with ultra hand. The way I see this game is a very messy game glued together unstably like the many failed contraptions I created. I could go on but the bottom line is that Zelda has officially lost its heart as this is most likely the desired direction they will take for the foreseeable future.

    Bien jugado, Nintendo.

The game is almost like Zelda BOTW, it's so boring ... the colors are strange, graphics are awful.
To my mind, building things is not part of a role playing game, it's just boring.
Most of people says its a good game, but how many of them will finish this game ? It's so boring, I will not finish this game.

I've played through BotW... it probably won't be enough for TotK. Also, for god's sake nintendo please finally come out of the 1990s and just do a full voiceover on story-driven games like this. just kills the immersion again and again when i play the game when once again a character is in front of me who only makes funny sounding noises. i know nintendo it's cheaper that way but i don'tI've played through BotW... it probably won't be enough for TotK. That's a lazy DLC of BOTW but not a new Zelda. There's no way it tooks 6 years of development. There's not even graphics improvments. The Switch can definitively do better.

I am not sure why this game is receiving so many positive reviews. Is it marketing and hype or just reviews from gamers who have no idea what the Zelda names means? Is it marketing and hype or just reviews from gamers who have no idea what the Zelda names means? In all fairness, if this game was called Adventure Island instead, it would be a hit. However, Nintendo opted to go with the franchise name, Zelda. How is this a Zelda game? There is no tri-force, no dungeons that store special items that help progress the adventure. Heck, where is the adventure at all honestly? You will find yourself walking around an empty world absent of color or life while you cook random things and fuse random objects together like this was an incredible machine. You will be swinging tree branches or shoot arrows with items that break after a few uses. Constantly fighting camera angles and wondering to yourself, what am I doing and why? Better than Breath of the Wild - Yes. A true successor to the Zelda Franchise - Not even close. Nintendo could of make this the most amazing Zelda adventure to date with their open world, but fell flat on their face. Maybe they assume gamers today are not capable of going on adventures where you must locate hidden dungeons that hold secrets, maybe they do need huge stars on minimaps that say GO HERE. None the less, for those who do enjoy cooking and fusing stuff together, fighting the same 8 monsters, defeating shrine after mindless shrine or just like to play games with no failure, then go for it, you will like it. However, for those older fans who remember what Zelda really stood for and the epic adventures that came before us, do not waste your time or money. I'd like to say Nintendo will get it right eventually, but lets be honest, they are done. We will never see another great Zelda game, so lets just hope they port Windwaker over to Switch sometime soon. RIP Zelda. Expand

Garbage. Over 90% of the game is recycled from BotW and that is not a good thing. Same boring, tedious, repetitive nonsense we got 6 years ago and they have the audacity to charge more. Save your time and money.

I really do not understand what anyone sees in this game or breath of the wild. From the standpoint of being a Zelda game the only thing that makes these 2 new games in the series a Zelda game is the name and the presence of the characters Link and Zelda. As far as feeling like a Zelda game in gameplay or atmosphere it does not. From an audio design perspective, Zelda games had classic music and soundtracks that many of us remember to this day. This game and BOTW are completely unforgettable from a soundtrack standpoint. Much of this game feels tedious and pointless, from the stamina meter to the paper mache weapons, to the unnecessary time sink that is cooking. This game and BOTW both feel like someone wanted to create a video game version of that stupid Nintendo Labo crap. Botw and this game should have been a new franchise and then Nintendo could have focused on making an actual Zelda game that would be true to what that series actually has been. I haven’t even touched on the underpowered nature of the Switch, but when you’ve gotten used to playing modern consoles where nearly all games run at 60fps, 1440p or 4K with HDR it is PAINFUL to try and play a game that runs at 30fps (at best) with muted colors and jaggies everywhere from lack of resolution. This game and BOTW are EXTREMELY overrated and I personally expect better from the Nintendo I once loved. I literally hate this game and what Nintendo has done to another series that I once loved. Nintendo, do better, Nintendo fanboys, expect better. It’s time to wake up! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game isn't novel enough. The opening gives you hope for some tension, since sense of threat and then you realize you are playing the same game you already sunk 100 hours into with some new gimmicks that only sometimes work and are only sometimes not awkward. Lacks any sense of what made any prior have novel or interesting Expand

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
