i had a weird feeling about this sequel. While the trailers at first teased interesting twists in the story, game structure/progression & some aspects of the world, I just wondered how they were gonna refresh a game with essentially the same map, enemies & combat, without entering in redundancy & shallowness.

And after putting the hours on this game, I can confirm that this weird feeling developed to disappointment, as much as I wanted to love the game.

For starters, if you didn't like BOTW, you probably won't like TOTK, and that's a huge let down for people who wanted something different, considering the years of development.

Exploring the world hasn't changed that much, the feel is quite similar, & while the sky islands & the underground provide new areas for traveling, there isn't something really refreshing, & the reward for exploration feels unbalanced. You are just gonna find some shrines, some enemies (lots of recycling) or some weapon that you probably won't use, or be excited about. Nothing too transcendental.

The story is there, but the open world shenanigans & the structure of the game progression makes it feel like it is far in the background in your gameplay experience, a problem that BOTW had.

I had some hopes for the dungeons, & some leakers where claiming wild takes about them, but in reality, they are glorified divine beasts with little to zero difficulty. The lead ups where a bit more interesting though.

The new abilities have their charm, but if you are not interested (like lots of people) in distracting yourself with infinite builds & fuses that don't provide any substance or meaning to your quest, you probably going to find it tedious & useless quickly. And there are TOO many options with various weapons anyway, so you won't find something really challenging that makes the difference in effectiveness.

This is without even mentioning the graphics & performance issues that i think they are just unacceptable for any major franchise/major game development. Dips in fps & aged graphics.

So here we are, with more questions than answers,

Why is this game getting 10s almost everywhere, with no objective review in sight?
Why is everyone assuming that an infinite sandbox & open world "experience" automatically gives a game a greatness status?
What happened to the mystic & sense of transcendence that made past Zeldas so great?

The thing is, this is a game that is perfect for streamers & people that make memes, because the potential of making jokes & crazy situations is very much there. But it seriously lacks the feel of something transcendental, of the experience of being a hero on a mission, a magical journey with high stakes & immersive places. The customization options are amazing, but they should not be the main point of the game, since i am not interested in minecraft zelda edition.

Still, there are many moments of charm & there are many opportunities to express yourself & enjoy the ride. But in no way this is a perfect game.

Reviewers & fans have to take a step back & really analyze this game better, because we are sending Nintendo the wrong message & there's a huge room for improvement.

This is the greatest game I've ever had the pleasure to play. It's as if it were MADE for me!!! That's because I'm a life-long gamer, and this game was MADE for those that love GAMES!

Firstly, the presentation is out of this world, beyond anything I've seen on the Switch before. The visuals, music... Everything in the game-world comes together beautifully. Despite the limited horsepower of the Switch (which is a handheld console running 2015 hardware), the presentation as a whole (during gameplay) comes together in a way that's above even the latest and greatest from other developers with VASTLY more powerful hardware. The world is wonderfully simulated to an impressive level of detail and due to this, feels alive. Only titles from the likes of Rockstar such as Red Dead Redemption gives this simulated world a run for its money imo. Standing on a sky island in the long billowing grass, rich with wildlife, and seeing the vast land below, clouds rolling over, is just breathtaking. The grand sense of scale is like nothing I've seen in an open world game before. It's as if every feature of the landscape is calling out to you, calling out that a fantastical adventure lies ahead.

The Story & Cutscenes are greatly improved over the previous title 'Breath of the Wild', much to my delight. They've pretty much been improved in all areas, direction, graphical fidelity, animation quality, story telling & frequency.

The game feels completely refreshed over BOTW (despite people that haven't played it calling it BOTW 1.5), it instantly cements itself as a brand new adventure... The land of Hyrule returns from the last game but it has changed dramatically, there's a whole new world in the sky, new enemies, new shrines, new abilities (all of which are crazy creative, to a shocking degree, and feel AWESOME to use). NEW EVERYTHING. The only thing that remains from BOTW is the graphical style (but now there is more variety to the themes), some features of the landscape of the land below (as it takes place in the same setting), and some of the core gameplay features that worked in BOTW, although most of those have received QOL improvements or other changes/overhauls.

The abilities... My word, the Nintendo devs must have been on some hard hallucinogenics to come up with the new abilities in Link's arsenal. They are incredibly creative and offer gameplay opportunities that I've not experienced in any other game, such as the ability to be CREATIVE yourself. The puzzles in the game can be solved in a ludicrous number of ways, and coming up with your own silly ways to solve them is extremely fun & rewarding. The abilties in the previous game did feel somewhat 'restricted' as if the devs were scared to give the player 'too much power'. This game completely fixes this complaint, the new abilities are beyond whacky and give so much power to the player but still without being overpowered.

Toga Link with his long hair is also just FABULOUS. Love the new look.

My only real negative so far would be that It can drop to 20fps at worst when using the ability 'ultrahand' or displaying very graphically intensive scenes but that hasn't affected my experience much, most of the time any action is going on it's a locked 30fps, and the input lag remains constant, which is actually a great ACHIEVEMENT on the Switch with this game. Anyone that says otherwise is quite uneducated and ignorant on the topic of game optimisation & hardware. It's very playable and when you play it, you melt into the experience, not giving a single hoot for the resolution or FPS. This is a very well-optimised game for the Switch and should be lauded as such.

The game works on DAY 1, no bugginess & no 'we'll fix it later' from Nintendo. Just a solid release that works great. Almost unheard of in today's industry. If any game deserves the new inflated prices of videogames, it's this one. Nintendo still know how to deliver a great game.

I will add finally that if you truly HATED the gameplay in BOTW, this game might not change that or be your cup of tea, although a lot of complaints that people had for BOTW have been rectified, so if you thought BOTW was a 7/10, this game could be a 10 for you.

Even if the game isn't your cup of tea, you'd have to be pretty dull to not see or appreciate the effort and expert game design throughout that the devs have delivered. It's a work of art, as has been every mainline Zelda game since Ocarina of Time in 1998. Any user score below 7 is from a blatant salty troll (that probably hasn't even got the game), ignore them.

I'd give this game an 11/10 if I could, it's one of the best games I've ever played. I wonder what Nintendo have in store for the next Zelda? The mind boggles. To top this they'll have to pull out all the stops once again.

As far as feeling like a Zelda game in gameplay or atmosphere it does not. From an audio design perspective, Zelda games had classic music and soundtracks that many of us remember to this day. This game and BOTW are completely unforgettable from a soundtrack standpoint. Much of this game feels tedious and pointless, from the stamina meter to the paper mache weapons, to the unnecessary time sink that is cooking. This game and BOTW both feel like someone wanted to create a video game version of that stupid Nintendo Labo crap. Botw and this game should have been a new franchise and then Nintendo could have focused on making an actual Zelda game that would be true to what that series actually has been. I haven’t even touched on the underpowered nature of the Switch, but when you’ve gotten used to playing modern consoles where nearly all games run at 60fps, 1440p or 4K with HDR it is PAINFUL to try and play a game that runs at 30fps (at best) with muted colors and jaggies everywhere from lack of resolution. This game and BOTW are EXTREMELY overrated and I personally expect better from the Nintendo I once loved. I literally hate this game and what Nintendo has done to another series that I once loved. Instant classic and totally subverted my expectations. I really liked Breath of the Wild but not as much as most. However, this literally addresses every single complaint I could've had about that game and adds on so much that I love.

If you’re new to this it is so welcoming and takes its time to truly immerse you into the world. It's not 10/10. If you like BOTW, you will like TOTK.

Nintendo sells game without full voice acting and with horrible performance (drops to 15-20fps in cutscenes!) for 70$. This is a joke. I am not planning buying next Nintendo console, if they still gonna treat customers like that.

In summary, people saying that TOTK is 10/10 are just simply lying.

The scope of what is possible with the mechanics provided to the player via object manipulation and unique traits of those objects is nothing short of awe-striking. So awe-striking that it overshadows the veritable cornucopia of systemics and mechanics already introduced in the previous title, Breath of The Wild. We will be seeing players finding new things to do and love in this game for many, many years to come. Beyond the meat of what makes this game unique, Tears of the Kingdom builds on what made breath of the wild great, leaving nothing behind. There are a wealth of "verbs" (things you can do) that is rivaled only by the games that borrowed directly from the first title. While other games follow the overwhelming status quo of combat being a primary (or only) way the player can really interact with the world, Tears of the Kingdom, like it's predecessor allows and encourages the player to experiment against the question "what if I could _____?" And the answer is virtually always YES. Game developers better be paying attention to this one. Tears of the Kingdom is an absolute masterclass in gameplay and systemic design. Expand

The story is really slow and predictable. You're told the same story about Ganondorf beating everyone like 3 times, the fourth time with some more context. It's not until the last fourth of the game that it actually starts to get interesting, but then again, it'll end exactly as you think it will. because Ganondorf doesn't stray from a stereotypical villain you'd see in a Disney movie.
Doesn't feel much like a Zelda game if i can be honest. 90% of your time you'll spend building and cooking stuff, which if you're into that, it's a good thing, but if you're not, like me, it's kind of a chore.
The positives about this game are the creativity of some puzzles, the wide combinations of properties you can give to your weapons, and that Ganondorf looks cool. But that's pretty much it.
Don't feel like complimenting the artstyle because it's literally the same as BOTW, not much new there.

It’s not a 10, I didn’t even really think it was a 9 at first, I was hovering at a 5 at best when I started (excluding the initial bit with Zelda WHICH IS AWESOME!) but it grows on you once it stops holding your hand and just lets you go wild and explore, a bit like BOTW (which I similarly hated when I first started playing).

Tears of the Kingdom takes the concepts laid out by Breath of the Wild and brings them to a fine polish.

The map has been altered slightly and events have shifted enough to properly reflect the passage of time. Despite the surface layer having the same base geography, the new additions of landmarks and the completely different mechanics change the nature of traversing the world entirely. I know where various specific places are on the map, but getting to them isn't the same as it was. It is a whole different challenge, one that I relish. The addition of various caves around the map is a nice little distraction. There were some incredible surprises inside some of them, and a few that caused me genuine terror I wasn't ready for.

The sky layer is definitely the place where the dev team tested all of the new mechanics behind Link's new abilities. The variety of little puzzles and interactions you can find there are surprising. it is very much reminiscent of the outer lying sky islands of Skyward Sword, but there is far more to do in this game than in that one. There are clearly places you are intended to reach later on in the game, but given enough time and effort, you can reach them at just about any point in the game. I encountered one specific place where there was an enemy that ended me a number of times before I was able to run away. Were I better player I may have stood a chance, though.

The Depths layer offers an experience I haven't encountered before in a Zelda game. It is a challenge to just survive there. I spent a good hour during one session traversing the underground and barely uncovered a fraction of the map, yet the number of things I found to do and enemies to fight caught me off guard, and I was trying to avoid most of them. There are things that will jump out at you from any corner available down there, even from the ground beneath your feet. I also met a face I wasn't expecting down there, but was very glad to see again.

The dungeons of this game are leagues ahead of those found in Breath of the Wild. The challenges offered by them force you to think about what you're doing. Some solutions where fairly straight forward in hindsight, but coming to those conclusions in the first place was a delight. The bosses are given a spectacular presentation, and offer just the right level of challenge. I felt good after completing them.

This game is not perfect. While I haven't encountered any graphical or framerate issues, and don't think I've encountered any bugs, there is a certain tedium to equipment management that is less enjoyable.

Having said that, I do enjoy finding new pieces of things to attach to other tools I've collected to create new and interesting tools. There's one specific item dropped by a specific type of world boss that I've already taken a liking to and regularly go back to obtain for my weapons. You are also still required to have a great variety of tools on you at any given time if you want to be thorough in your exploration. I've discovered a number of tools already that are a must have for exploring certain sections of the map.

The new mechanics of this game are a genuine joy to experiment with. I've been thoroughly enjoying testing the limits of what the abilities can do. There are a number of things that can be done in this game which were simply not possible or were otherwise too complex for those like myself to do in the previous title, but the new mechanics have brought forth numerous new possibilities for interaction with the engine. There are some times when I find myself missing the powers of the prior game, but those times are few and far between, and that does not detract from the experience.

If you enjoyed Breath of the Wild, you will enjoy this game. If you haven't played Breath of the Wild, I highly encourage you to do so before picking this game up. The experience is not the same.
