Amazing game with incredible visuals, incredibly engaging story, great cast of characters, witty comedy and simply outstanding music. It's not a 10/10 because the combat mechanics, although I really did enjoy them, are not for everyone.

My favorite is probably the red streamer battle theme. Yes, most Paper Mario music is really good, but this is the best so far in the series. Expand

I loved it. It has actually funny dialogue which I haven't seen in a game in a while. It really got some chuckles out of me. The start is a bit more battle based but the further you go the more story there is. I think this is a must play on you switch

I understand why some players would have a hard time adjusting to the puzzle battle system, but I found it came pretty naturally after some practice and the game does offer some ways to get hints. It seemed just challenging enough without being too difficult and I don't think it takes away from the core game. I do agree that there's not particularly an incentive to battle enemies after a certain point and you spend some time avoiding them.

I think each entry in the Paper Mario series has had its own strengths and weaknesses, but I think Origami King does a fantastic job of blending the various aspects together in it's own way. It's one of only a few games I've played where my only disappointment was that I'd finished the game and the story was completed.

first of all, let me get something straight, I am not trying de-review bomb the ratings and that all this is my personal opinion of the game. so now, I will start. This review will be split to four things, overworld, battle system, enemy design ( I choose enemy because as far as I know, nobody talked about it), and completionist view, so lets start with the overworld, the overworld is filled with many things like really pretty graphics, other people might not like the 100% paper themed world, I really enjoyed it, especially because most games I played had different styles, but somehow felt he same so the paper theme was a nice change of pace. the overworld is also filled with collectibles like toads that have sometimes have pretty funny things to say when you save them and tons of what is basically cool looking action figures that look that that also describe whatever the figure is, there are also not-bottomless holes that you can fill with confetti that you can get from almost everything (because everything is confetti), the last thing I will talk about is the worlds, there are 6 different areas in-game that I won't describe because this is a spoiler free review but all I will say that each world has it's own theme that it's mission revolves around which is normal for a game but the themes are still pretty cool. Now I will talk about the oh-so controversial battle system. The battle system is a literal turn based battle system because you turn rings to arrange enemies to get them all in a single turn, and while other people might absolutely despise the battle system, I find it very fun and refreshing, and yes I did avoid most battles, but I do that in every single RPG I play and never because the battle system is boring and that not having EXP is also pretty nice because I don't like to grind for a boss just to get destroyed by the next one (AKA every single hard mode RPG I played) so not having EXP is pretty nice there are also boss battles that instead of arranging the enemies,
you arrange a path to hit the boss's weakpoint. the battle system is also supported with the gear system, the gear system is just equipment that you buy with coins that you get from battles and overworld stuff like not-bottomless holes and ? mark blocks and to counter a point I see a lot in this game's reviews, items get pretty expensive later on, and weapons breaking helps with losing money. Remember toads, well they can help in battles by solving some of the puzzles, healing you, and damaging enemies which reduces their annoyance factor. Next is enemies design. Since the game is themed around origami, most enemies are are origami and are all possible to make in real life (neat), most of them look like kinda creepy and unsettling which is probably how they are supposed to look like, there are also paper macha enemies that eat the world and create non bottomless holes and instead of using the normal battle system, you need to beat them in the overworld by hitting a sticker on them with the hammer so they aren't invulnerable to hammer hits from every other side. the bosses have my favorite designs even though some people might say they are lazy because they are literally just stationary work materials, and I LOVE that, each boss had attacks depending on what they are. My favorite was the ninth boss that always uses an attack that can 1-hit kill you (you could probably guess what it is). Now to the final category, the completionist view. In this category, I will talk about how completing the game 100% is, and was hard but fun. most stuff like saving toads dosen't take long but can sometimes be just a little bit frustrating, but not too much. Collecting the figures is the same as the toads, but the real challenge is the trophies. The trophies can range from hitting all ? mark blocks, to playing all games in a game show without failing any one (that was a nightmare) but they aren't almost impossible to get. Sadly, there aren't any special thing that you get exept an extra cutscene after the credits, but the journey more then enough for me. Overall, paper mario the origami king is a great game, but if you think about buying it, you should watch some gameplay for it until you decide to buy it or not.

    And now, goodbye

Excellent musical, graphics, and sense of humor.
A lot of things to do for completing the game at 100%.
Original battle system, but à little bit easy in "random" battles. The direct battles on the files, or bosses, are better.
So bad that people judge their own desires instead of really testing/tasting the Game...

However, players can ignore the puzzles and just use the turn based attacks. It will just take longer.

I personally like puzzles, so I enjoy the system. The puzzles don't require the highest iq, so many can be solved pretty quickly. For the most skilled puzzlers, it will be tedious, but it's a small part of the game. I spend most of the time exploring, finding toads and hidden blocks, and advancing the main story.

Any Nintendo fan needs to play this game on its own merit. Don't think of it like an installment in a series. As a standalone experience, there is a lot to appreciate. I've paused and taken screenshots of amusing dialog and cute photos throughout the game. Those that don't like it I fear have not truly given it a chance, and perhaps judging it against what they want the game to be instead of appreciating the developer's intentions.

One of the highlights of this game is the story. I will talk a bit about it here so if that worries you skip anything in (). (SPOILERS!——
Each and every character in Origami King is filled with life, identity and humor. The game strikes an incredible balance between humor, netrual, and serious. This is a modern big N game so don’t expect the next Majora’s Mask or Partners in Time but it knows when to be serious when to be neither and when to be funny. However, Due to Nintendo being safe the team was not able to make unique characters. But they still tried anyways. 8/10 story.)

    -Gameplay-
    —Overworld—
Mario does not control super well in the overworld. I will admit I played a lot more Mario and Luigi than Paper Mario but it just felt, off. Mario only can really jump and hammer and it’s weird for a Mario game even a Mario RPG to have this horrible small jump. It just doesn’t work right. Overworld battles are ehh... I know a lot of people like them but to me they were alright. Not bad but I think they did a good job by putting just enough in for it not to get old but it doesn’t whear on you. The puzzle elements of the overworld are very very good however. And I think puzzles are a great fit for the series. Same with all the collectibles which are ironically Toads but it is a great deal of fun finding them all. 7/10 Overworld
    —Battles—
Battles are great as well, It uses a unique battle system that is made very well. It uses this game’s greatest strength by making them like a puzzle to solve. You can use coins to buy extra time to solve the puzzles and pay the toads to help you. If you correctly solve it you get a nice attack bonus and that satisfying ah-ha! moment. It takes out EXP/Star Points/Love/Whatever and has coins. I love this coin system. It is so much more elegant. It takes grinding out completely. And makes it so that it’s more up to skill if you win or not. You get upgraded via coins by going to the mostly balanced shops and getting temporary upgrades. Which work like BOTW except you have a permanent hammer and jump. And get health by finding toads. (Except once which annoys me but I digress) Which allows you to still do hard playthroughs just like the old games by avoiding badges, health, and shops. You can also use items and the combat really didn’t get old till the very end but they were able to make less encounters happen when it got old. 10/10 Combat. Perfect.
    -Music-
Origami King has one of the hands-down best soundtracks in a video game period. It’s kinda hard to describe it but so much effort was put into the smallest details. 10/10 Sound design.
    -Art-
Finally, the art. Along with the other things this game’s art is excellent. It takes the design of Paper Mario and perfects it. The game is gorgeous and it is impressive because they would have had to painstakingly fold every price of origami in real life and get it right. It is breath taking. And it is flowing with originality as well. 10/10 Here as well.
    -Finish-
Origami King is my pick for game of the year 2020 and it really deserves more attention. Please play it.

The game may have a combat system that takes some time getting used to, but it's still absolutely worth playing. Just for the beautiful world, the great humor, the good story and one of the most lovable characters in video game history. Anyone who doesn't take Olivia to their heart has no heart.

I am honestly impressed (in a good way). I thought this game just won't be for me but after playing through it i can definitely recommend this to everyone. Whether you're a paper Mario fan or new to the series this is an excellent entry in the series. Probably the best out of modern paper Mario games.

I think we should take Origami King as an independent game and as an adventure game and not as an RPG and a continuation of the saga, seeing it that way it works great in most of its aspects.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The soundtrack is phenomenal. I don't think I've ever heard such incredible music from a Mario game. It really feels like I'm Paper Mario, doing whatever Paper Mario does. Honestly, the battle system is better than people say. I like how this game handles puzzle combat. The best part about this game is it's basically color splash and sticker star but it adds a few things from the older games to get the best of both sides. The dang environments are Origami and they each have their own banger theme to them so it's just a win to hear a track and explore the beautiful Paper World. It really feels like this is peak Paper Design here. It even has a similar mechanic as color splash where you fill in a part of the environment! What makes this even better is the new gimmick made possible by motion controls. It's wacky, it's creative, and it's enjoyable! The best part is, you get to use it in battle too! Now aside from the flashy art and effects, there is instances where some attacks might be very ineffective to the boss's health but there is obviously a more effective way to deal with each of them. The plot is as simple as writing your own name on paper but that's just another mario trope. The action is great and even though there isn't any EXP, Mario still grows a little stronger just by collecting Max-up Hearts which I like doing. The battle system doesn't really have much strategy and half of the time it's the same puzzle you gotta solve but because of the exaggerated effects and the music, I don't think you won't be running from too many battle just because of how flashy this game is! As usual, you play as Mario, in his paper form, in a world made of paper. You are going to the Origami Festival near Princess Peach’s castle, and, as happens in literally every game, something terrible happens – in this case, Princess Peach has been folded up into a horrible mind-controlled origami replica of herself by the titular Origami King. You soon learn that all of Bowser’s soldiers have also been folded up, and poor Bowser himself is little more than a square with a face.

Naturally, it falls to Mario and his origami companion, Olly’s sister Olivia, to save the world.

You proceed through six (though actually more like fifteen or so) distinct zones, each of them capped off with a boss. As you go through the game, you learn more about the origins of Olly and Olivia, as well as recruiting a rotating set of companions, some of which are familiar faces and some of them entirely new ones.

Well, okay, not entirely new; you’ve seen their types before, but these are original characters.

There are some surprisingly emotional moments in the story, but mostly, it is just silly – which, while okay, rarely excels. There are some fun gags, but it’s all very light, and not tremendously memorable. The serious moments in the game ARE memorable, all the more so for how surprising they are and how much they contrast with everything else.

Unfortunately, there’s only really two of these moments, and the second one doesn’t stick around enough to really impact the player.

Sadly, the actual game half of the game is no better. Replacing standard TTRPG combat is a puzzle wheel system, where you rotate enemies to line them up to either smash them with your hammer or hop on their heads. You get a bunch of durability based weapons that can only be used so many times before running out, but you end up with enough of them (and they are cheap enough to buy) that you never DO run out, and basically it feels pretty much entirely pointless beyond “Do I use weapon A, B, or C against this enemy type based on the line up?”

The bosses use the same system, but instead of you lining up enemies, instead Mario starts out on the edge of a circle and the wheels have to be aligned to create a path for him, set up with arrows that tell him to move in a particular direction, with other panels that boost his attacks, allow him to attack the boss normally, or to use special “magical” powers, the last of which have to be enabled with “on” switches that are hidden in treasure chest panels you have to run over to enable, which also drops hearts and coins onto the battlefield.

The bosses are really the highlight of the game mechanically, and are all reasonably enjoyable; the ordinary combat encounters are honestly basically pointless, as they are fundamentally all the same and don’t really add much to the game.

Overall, though, the core gameplay is pretty epehemeral. The bosses are really the only parts that are at all memorable, and going through the game, most of what you’re doing is not particularly interesting or exciting. They try to throw in some gags, but honestly, most of the areas are just kind of there and most of the environmental puzzles are straightforward enough that it just doesn’t sell the game to the player.

All in all, Paper Mario: The Origami King is a game that is hard to have strong feelings about. It wasn’t bad to play, but at the same time, it was rarely actively good, with the strong parts interspersed with what was fundamentally filler levels that don’t challenge the player in a meaningful way. Only a few points did anything really clever, and the rest of it was just mildly clever at most.

Alas, this makes it hard to recommend, though I wouldn’t say it is bad, either. It’s merely mediocre – and with so many good games out there, there’s a lot of better things you can do with your time and money.

Also, I like the comedy and the writing of the dialogues, especially when Bowser and it's minions are on screen. Luigi is nice too.

From what I noticed, the battle system is where controversy is. It's far for been that bad, but indeed it gets annoying because sometimes it gets too long to figure how to arrange the regular enemies in rows and groups. However it works really well during the bosses battles. Maybe with some small tweaks they would get the perfect balance of a good battle system. It's not bad though. It's possible to shorten or make it easier by throwing coins to the audience formed by the toads you find hidden around the world. But if there's something that really annoys me is this origami partner you have the whole game. Remember Fi from Zelda Skyward Sword? Just as inconvenient. And last, but not least, please get rid once and for all of these f... sliding panel puzzles.

Exploring the world is very fun and the script is funny. Nintendo proves time and time again that you don't need amazing hardware to make a beautiful game. They were on the cusp of making a great game here, but the slide puzzle system just doesn't cut it for a game of this length. Even a no-frills turn based combat system would have been better, but for some reason Nintendo doesn't want to make Paper Mario an RPG again. It's fine if they don't want to make another RPG, but the day-to-day boss fights need to be interesting.

The funny and childlike presentation cannot hide the fact that this is a game for juveniles and adults. It's relatively complicated to play and without any reference to children's imaginations. It's actually another mediocre RPG that the world does not need. It's strange why Nintendo, of all companies, comes up with such ideas.

    PROS:

    - STRONG CENTRAL IDEA: The game picks up the idea of a paper-based Mario world and really runs with it. The central story, pitting "flat paper" characters against origami and papier-mâché villains, is good fun. The idea has enough steam to sustain the game throughout its long duration.

    - MEMORABLE CHARACTERS: Some of the characters and their dialogues made me smile throughout the adventure. Buoyed by its characters, PM:TOK also dares to go places that you wouldn't necessarily expect in a Mario game, and it's all the better for it.

    - GOOD BOSS BATTLES: I have my reservations on the combat system (see below), but some of the boss battles do work fine. I found myself looking forward to the next large-scale clash.

    CONS:

    - LACKLUSTER COMBAT: The puzzle-like combat system is one of those weird one-off ideas that only Nintendo could decide to use in a triple A game. It's daring, but it gets old real quick. As I went through the same process for the hundredth time, I wished for a way to skip regular combat encounters and move straight to the bosses.

    - PACING ISSUES: There is a cliche that RPGs should be long, but this one could have used some trimming, especially in the combat department. The ending tries to feel epic, but to me it felt like a Disney movie dragging on for too long. All in all, I enjoyed PM:TOK, but I wished it would end a bit sooner.

    - WEAK RPG MECHANICS: This game clearly tries to be an RPG, but the RPG-like mechanics feel mostly irrelevant, and feel like they could have been scrapped safely.

Expand

Nota final: 85/100 Expand

I just want to start by saying this was my first Paper Mario game.

Was it a bad game? No. Was it a perfect Game? No. Why are people giving it zero scores and negative reviews? Because they want absolutely everything and everyone to cater to their needs. The writing in the game was a solid 9/10, some of the best writing I've seen in a long time and props to the writers for how good it

The writing in the game was a solid 9/10, some of the best writing I've seen in a long time and props to the writers for how good it was.

The gameplay was certainly better than I expected from looking at trailers or videos. I want to add that I find puzzles and riddles very difficult so this was a challenge for me at times.

The graphics and art style are amazing in this game, the colours pop right off my monitor when playing the game. Also the framerate was good for the most part, when there is a lot of particles on screen (confetti is a good example) the framerate certainly dipped into the 20's.

I'm not the greatest at reviews but if someone see's this and it helps them make their mind up about the game then my mission will be complete.

    Thank you for reading.

A refreshing entry in the Paper Mario series. It takes the great visuals and writing from Colour Splash and improves upon them to make a stunningly varied, colourful and hilarious title.

Honestly a great game compared to the last few that have released. I would highly recommend the story line is great, the boss fights are a little boring but other than that the game is great.

I love Mario games, been playing them since I was a kid, but this game has issues. I love the story, and I love the characters, Olivia is awesome.

But, and a huge BUT, the combat system is repetitive and boring, makes me want to rage quit. Also a lot of filler that is not needed. Like the game show, it's fine as a side quest, but not apart of the main story. But yeah, the combat

There are some moments of pure Nintendo perfection, particularly during the first half of the game. But after a while the collecting tasks becomes a slog and you dread getting thrown into the ring for yet another tedious battle. Ultimately it doesn’t hit hard enough as either a platformer or an RPG.

There's simply no reason to engage in battle, besides replenishing confetti, which is plentiful most of the time. As a longtime Paper Mario player it's good to see partners are kinda back... you just can't control their actions for some reason. It’s no masterpiece like the older ones, but it’s leagues better than color splash. It’s disappointing that it doesn’t seem interested in bringing the series back to its roots, but the effort made in improving upon recent entries (To a substantial degree, no less) is nothing short of admirable. Personally, I enjoyed the puzzle-solving battle system, but I can understand how it can be frustrating to others. Fortunately, coins are abundant in The Origami King, and they can always be used to help solve the puzzles for players who are stumped. Visually, the game is beautiful, and the music is among the best in the series!

I believe that Paper Mario fans, while perhaps disappointed by some missing aspects from games prior, will still find plenty to enjoy here. It's not the zenith among the series' entries, but The Origami King is still solid!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics: 2/2 The Origami King looks and runs beautifully on the Switch. It is one of the best looking games that Nintendo has put out in 2020.
Gameplay: 2/2 I found the combat in the Origami King to be very fun. However, during the Purple/Green Streamers, I felt less compelled to engage in combat. Nevertheless, the ring based combat in Origami King was a delightful experience.
    Sound/Music 2/2
The Origami King’s soundtrack is magnificent. Some highlights are the Streamer Battles, Event Battle, Boss Battles (Vellumentals/Legion of Stationary, Toad Town, Picnic Road, Autumn Mountain, Shogun Studios, etc.
    Story: 1/2
I felt that The Origami King’s story felt a bit short and lackluster. It definitely has some highlights though (eg. Bobby’s death). However, the rest feels like filler to extend the content of Origami King.
Characters: 1/2 The characters are just generic Mario enemies. The party members are kidda interesting. Bobby is my favorite character in the entire game. However, Professor Toad, Kamek, and Bowser Jr. are mediocre at best. Oliva is just annoying. King Olly is a “unique character”, however his intentions for folding everything into origami are childish and racist. Overall, The Origami King is a very good game. The gameplay, graphics, and music are beautiful. However, I felt that the story was too short and the characters were too generic. 8/10

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a unique and colorful adventure out to shame by the lack of originality and interesting characters. Let me tell you what I mean. Gone are the days of taking turns andPaper Mario: The Origami King is a unique and colorful adventure out to shame by the lack of originality and interesting characters. Let me tell you what I mean. Let’s not beat around the bush here, The Origami King is not an RPG. If you grew up in the days of The Thousand Year Door, you’re most likely going to be disappointed with the outcome. Gone are the days of taking turns and planning your attacks, Instead, you operate a ring-based arena, trying to line up the enemies in either a straight line or a square of four. It takes a while to get used to. In fact, some areas are littered with these ring-based battles it gets overwhelming and repetitive. But I think the end, the battle system is a nice puzzle, and a delightful break from the main game. Speaking of the main game, it doesn’t follow our favorite plumber Mario through the same “damsel-in-distress story. Instead, he finds Princess Peach has been completely turned into Origami by King Olly, the game’s biggest rival. The character itself doesn’t have any notable personality, besides his fierce desire to turn every piece of paper into Origami. That same storyline follows throughout the entire game, and is implemented very well. The beginning stages are very linear. And hearing Olivia, Mario’s over-zealous but sweet partner constantly hold your hand gives very little chance of being able to work things out on your own. And leaving out the very rare cases, it’s like this the whole game. Along with this idea, Mario can ask Olivia for hints anytime he likes, and usually those hints give away the answer completely. However, the stages and areas get much more appealing and larger the further you progress. With collectibles to find constantly, it barely feels like a constraint. But, aside from the mountainous treasures you find along the way, one bad habit sticks throughout the game- the hidden toads. These toads are everywhere. From a leaf on a tree, to a swan in a pool, to a flower hidden away in the dirt, it makes it almost impossible to find them all without any help, especially with how big the areas get the further you progress. And 100% an area is usually limited for this reason alone. It is definitely the games biggest restraint, and leaves much room to be desired in terms of completing the game fully. So, for all those reasons alone, I feel Paper Mario: The Origami King deserves a six. It was a fun adventure, and kept me occupied throughout the vast and expansive areas to explore, but in terms of collecting it really doesn’t hold up well. So, if you’re hungering for an original RPG, you should definitely pass and just play The Thousand Year Door for the Ump-Teenth time. If however you just want a fun little puzzler with lots of beautiful lands to explore, I highly suggest it. Happy Gaming, Fellow Gamers -Apportal Expand

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
