    The tempo of the battle is not good.

    It's a fun romp if you avoid battles, the issue being that I should feel like I have to avoid battles to enjoy a game. The ring based system was interesting at first, but grows old very early on and without and real reward for battling, it just doesn't feel fun to fight.

    Another issue is that due to no partners, your OW abilities are limited. A number of puzzles come down to "Toss    It's a fun romp if you avoid battles, the issue being that I should feel like I have to avoid battles to enjoy a game. The ring based system was interesting at first, but grows old very early on and without and real reward for battling, it just doesn't feel fun to fight.

    Another issue is that due to no partners, your OW abilities are limited. A number of puzzles come down to "Toss confetti to win", which is rather boring.

    This takes the spot for best paper Mario in the series for I really loved the dialogue the characters the battle system and the big open world was truly amazing it's an awesome game

    Es una pena que algunos usuarios valoren el juego con 0. Lo hacen por envidia de no tener en sus plataformas un juego exclusivo como este. Basta ya de tanto mediocre. Posiblemente lo incluiría en el top 10 de los juegos de Nintendo. El juego por cierto está estupendo. Es muy entretenido y tiene una música y unos gráficos magníficos.

    Storywise, it's pretty interesting. A very well executed concept for sure.     Storywise, it's pretty interesting. A very well executed concept for sure. The battle system may not be what everyone was looking for, but I've heard most people say that they are fairly satisfied with it. Nothing like the tedious systems of Color Splash or Sticker Star, or so I've heard. Later on the battle system gets much more punishing, but it's perfectly bearable. Characters may also not be the most unique, but the ones that are stand out in an amazing way. Even the bosses are hard to forget. I won't spoil anything that happens with the characters, but I will say that they're very memorable. The soundtrack is a big highlight. So many times I found myself bopping in my seat and cranking up the volume. I'll be listening to it for a long time. The game is also a visual treat. There are some framerate slowdowns, but usually they're forgivable for everything else happening.

    I can't express a whole lot of what I loved about the game without spoiling it, which I don't want to do because it's best played without spoilers. Even watching the trailers for the game spoiled a lot for me, but it was still okay. I loved the game for what it is, and I won't be forgetting it any time soon. Please pick it up, and don't listen to the TTYD and 64 fans as they bomb this review section. It'll be worth your time, roughly 30 hours if you take your time.    … Expand

    Still absolutely no good reason to fight enemies. Bosses are generic office items. They put the helper system back in, but ruined it completely. Stick with the first three Paper Mario games.

    I was really looking forward to nintendo doing something innovative and fun, but this game sucks like any other, I regret buying a Nintendo Switch and I regret buying this game.

I mean, that's basically what this is, with the addition of a puzzle on top of the fighting. And it grows on you as it becomes more complex.

    The game is a pleasure to play, and there's constant humor and surprises. The game actually oozes atmosphere, which I wasn't expecting at all. And it has brilliantly designed levels, and even more so the further you get in.

    If you like high-quality first party Nintendo games, there's no reason you wouldn't like this. It's a great game to play after months of Animal Crossing.    … Expand

    Best Paper Mario game since TTYD and a great RPG.

    The music is great. The characters are awesome. There are unique rememberable ones and then also hilarious funny ones. Tons of production value in this game, I'm honestly surprised. I can't really say anything without spoilers but the team who made this must have had a blast. Combat gets a little old but it is fast which makes    Best Paper Mario game since TTYD and a great RPG.

    The music is great.

    El ritmo inicial es lo único que me hace ponerle un 9, esa hada molesta es demasiado molesta, demasiado, te detiene en el momento donde mas quieres moverte, mirar, explorar, avanzar para comenzar la aventura, ¿que les costaba poner los mensajes en pantalla y no detenerte?... luego de eso el juego es muy bueno, mantiene el humor de la saga y es muy bello.

    Amazing and bright visuals, captivating worlds, a delightful soundtrack and fun battles. It isn’t what traditional Paper Mario used to be in terms of RPG but I ended up liking a lot the ring battle system, I enjoy those little puzzles before each battle, while the boss battles give a fresh take on the ring system. Overall had a blast, great game!

    Me encanto este juego, claramente no es un TTYD. Pero es muy bueno por sus propios medios, se extrañan mucho los juegos clasicos de paper mario pero no por eso voy a calificar subjetivamente. El juego se ve hermoso, te divierte, te entretiene, tiene muchisimas cosas por hacer en todo su hermoso mundo, así es, es muy bonito y hay mucha atención al detalle. Cada serpentina (capitulo/arco)Me encanto este juego, claramente no es un TTYD. Pero es muy bueno por sus propios medios, se extrañan mucho los juegos clasicos de paper mario pero no por eso voy a calificar subjetivamente. El juego se ve hermoso, te divierte, te entretiene, tiene muchisimas cosas por hacer en todo su hermoso mundo, así es, es muy bonito y hay mucha atención al detalle. Cada serpentina (capitulo/arco) da muchisimo juego porque hay muchos toads/coleccionables que encontrar. De igual forma existen 2 jefes por serpentina y eso es increible.
    Su sistema de combate esta bien (hasta ahí) es bueno, pero no muy bueno, ni increíble. Sin embargo, las peleas contra jefes son buenísimas.
    La música es muy buena, y el humor es muy bueno, superando al humor promedio de esta saga que siempre se ha caracterizado por ese motivo. intelligent systems realizó un gran trabajo, muy bueno. Espero que pueda seguir ese camino, mejorar y traernos un poco mas del sistema antiguo. Aunque el nuevo no esta mal, no se dejen llevar por el hate de personas sin objetividad y que ni el juego tienen... realmente es muy bueno, y es un gran camino el que tiene paper mario de aquí para adelante. A forma personal lo considero el tercer mejor paper mario superando al de wii.

    This is not a traditional rpg, but it doesn't mean that it's a bad Paper Mario game, far from it. Go in with an open mind and you will have a great time, especially if you are puzzle buff like me.

The combat is something I thought I would hate, but I actually really like it!I see people complaining that, due to the lack of XP, there is “no motivation to battle” but that’s simply not true. You get a LOT of coins from battles, and you can’t really get that many coins elsewhere in the game. Throughout the game, there are various shops you find that sell collectibles and attack boosts/damage reducers. Basically like leveling up. The incentive is there, just a little more complicated. This game does NOT deserve to be review bombed just because it’s not TTYD 2. It’s great in its own right.… Expand

    I loved it my first paper Mario game technically i played 64 TYD and color splash it's a great game a slow start but it keeps you occupied with its tricky puzzles and puzzle based battles.

    At the beginning the art is beautiful, the music is ok and the history seems interesting, the music is ok and the first time you open your menu you star to imagine all the cool stuff it will come in this game (unfortunatelly is just your imagination)...

    Cons
    Later in the game (so much later due tons of text) you have your first fight
    After the first fights you realize that you receive no experience nor points nor material for crafting, nothing, just a bored useless fight, then there is no point in fighting and then you just try to avoid fighting every time you can and when the minions get you to have a fight is really ANOYING even more the WAVE FIGHTS
    You get deeper in the game, in fact you have been playing for HOURS and Olivia (your yellow Origami "Navi") is still giving you instructions about HOW TO FIGHT
    Finally when you defeat the first boss and you met your first party member you start thinking that the game mechanics will change for good... but NO... your partner is useless, you can't command him to make any attack or something is just literally SLEEPING while you are fighting

    So yes... this is a bad game, with bad fight mechanics and you will spent hours and hours on trying to avoid the origami soldiers minions and find hidden useless toads just for fun...    … Expand

You battle to get coins, you dont get experience nor level up. As you advance on the game, you unlock more items or skills which allow you to get stronger in battles and unlock new areas.

    The thing I dont like is that the dialogues are    Good game overall. After playing for ~4 hours I can tell this is an exploration game, where you have to find hidden toads, treasures and hidden blocks. You battle to get coins, you dont get experience nor level up. As you advance on the game, you unlock more items or skills which allow you to get stronger in battles and unlock new areas.

    A historia é muito boa, nada muito diferente do "resgate a princesa e salve o mundo" porem foi acrescentado a "origamização" onde da um ar diferente para a historia a jogabilidade é a mesma de todos os paper mario, anda pula e bate com o martelo, ja o gameplay da batalha é bem diferente
    o esquema de vc mudar o cenario e alinhar os personagens é    O jogo é bem legal e bonito, porem dou 7,5

    ja as batalhas com os BOSSES são incrivelmente legais e algumas (até voce pegar o jeito) são moderamente dificeis
    a ideia de voce caçar toads e preencher lugares destruidos pelo king origami acrescenta bastante no tempo de jogo , sem contar a variedade de colecionaveis que voce tem que sair caçando
    graficamente o jogo esta lindissimo (apesar que a tematica do anterior de pintar o cenario eu achei um pouco mais)
    uma das coisas que realmente me incomodou foi a "ajuda" que o jogo tenta colocar pra voce, muito das vezes chega ser insuportavel o tanto de chat que aparece , toda hora, eu até entendo que muitas crianças vão jogar e vão precisar aprender e etc, porem deveria ter algum jeito de cortar
    os personagens em si são bem legais, alguns são genericos sim, grande parte os TOADS, pq são MUITOS, mas eles tem falas e umas "historias" bacanas , exceto que mesmo q ele lute com voce , quase não fariam a diferença
    pra min é um excelente jogo, porem tem seus empecilhos, é um recomendo pra quem tiver em falta porem não vejo como um MUST BUY do switch    … Expand

    It is called Paper Mario but it does not mean that it must be RPG game, it's only Mario made in paper. There are A LOT of RPG games already, you really want more? Don't have selfish thoughts!

    Este juego está recibiendo calificaciones muy injustas, muchos son de los propios fans de Nintendo que para mi son una comunidad muy tóxica, su disgusto es porque el juego no es un tonto RPG, así de simple, ellos querían un juego continuista, y hay que decir que la mayoría de estos asquerosos fans de Nintendo son jovenes que jugaron desde el Nintendo 64, son de lo peor ni saben valorar juegos del Nintendo clásico. Y tratándose de RPGs, estoy seguro que la mayoría son de USA y España, países donde hay más fans de dicho género.
    Latinoamérica está má feliz, porque la mente es más abierta a los plataformas y sabe poco de RPGs.
    Paper Mario en realidad es un buen juego si lo ves desde una perspectiva de jugador fresco y nuevo, que no conozca RPGs, esta es la forma en que hay que verlo ya que no intenta ser lo que los haters quieren.

    The game has amazing music, visuals, and funny dialogue. The amount of detail in the environment is incredible. They fixed so many commonly complained about things from the previous installments. The battle system keeps your mind fresh and the use of badges and “weapons” keeps things interesting! Great storyline!

    I love Mario games and I liked this at first, but the wave battles are frustrating, I would much prefer to just jump on the baddies. I spend most of the time trying to avoid the battles and this makes it not fun to play. I really enjoyed the rest of the game and the graphics are amazing. I find Olivia can be a bit annoying, talking a lot. They just nuked the entire Paper Mario series. Tanabe doesn't even care, he did an interview where nothing that worked in the series previously can be used in the series going forward. So the next game is probably going to be an apocalypse. No thanks, I am out. What happened to you Nintendo? I thought you had a quality assurance team.

    I've never played a Paper Mario game before, but I think this one is quite nice. My main complaint is the combat system. I think it's an interesting idea but every so often there are fight where it's practically impossible to align the enemies in the short amount of time you have which is very infuriating. Also there is very little reason to fight enemies since all you get is coins whichI've never played a Paper Mario game before, but I think this one is quite nice.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now I'm seeing a lot of 0's because it's not a traditional Paper Mario Game, but hear me out. It doesn't have to be. Now some may not like what I have to say, but I have to commend the devs for branching out and trying something new. Keep in mind that Breath of the Wild took away much of what made the franchise what it was but it still became a big hit, one of the best Zelda's of the franchise.

    Paper Mario: The Origami King ticks a lot of check boxes for me. The first hour I played, I was a bit concerned, as it wasn't like the original series, but after getting a hold of the battle mechanic, it really isn't that bad. It might seem like a bad fighting mechanic but after getting used to it, I actually found myself going into battle a lot more often for extra coins, as well as familiarizing myself with it's mechanics. It's less than ideal, but I can see what they were trying to do. In Paper Mario, usually you have a 2D Plane in the middle of a fight, between just you and the enemy but in Origami King, they tried to expand that into a 3D Perspective and add a layer of depth and strategy into the game.

    For the most part, I find myself enjoying the combat system. The world is vibrant and the art style they went with is spectacular, with story writing that just fits in with the Mario universe and the cheesy comments from Olivia just add to the charm that we've grown used to since the original game on the N64.

    Bosses are a mixed bag. I have found that in the ones that I have fought so far, half of them have been incredibly inspired. Yes the coloring pencils is not exactly...creative...but it fits into the world of Paper Mario very well, but there are also the Volumental bosses which are much more creative in design and goes to show what the team was able to do with an Origami themed Paper Mario title

    The game isn't perfect. It doesn't have traditional Paper Mario mechanics like it did in the first two titles, but I'm not going to stone the devs or Nintendo for wanting to try something new AND breathe new life into the series. It's a cut above some of the titles of the past. If I had to rank The Origami King with the titles already out...I'd say it's just below TTYD but it's definitely better than Super Paper Mario. Which again wasn't too bad of a game, I loved SPM, it was the last good Paper Mario that I found myself enjoying, and Origami King brings that love back to me with it's open world, vibrant art style and storytelling. Gameplay isn't bad, and it's above and beyond Sticker Star. It's not perfect, but it's very nearly there. So I give it an 8.    … Expand

    It's fun, not overly complicated, and has that treasure hunting element as you try and find all the hidden blocks, toads, and treasure chests. Sure the battle system is weird, but hey, if you like puzzles they it's just fine.

There is no reason to engage in combat as you get nothing out of it.

    Better than expected! The game looks frankly gorgeous and moves at a pleasant pace. The bosses are engaging and creative! Its battle system risks getting tedious over time, due to its repetitive nature, but the world and environmental puzzles draw you back in when that fatigue hits. Great fun!

    I am enjoying this game more then I anticipated. I was hesitant about buying when I saw the tree house live event but an hour before released I decided to give it a try. I have not stopped playing since the battle system though it is not perfect it’s a huge improvement from colour splash and sticker star. This game deserves a much higher score.     The Origami King may not be a direct successor to TTYD, but it pulls off an action-adventure Paper Mario game better than any game in the series. It has a great world, fun characters, and incredible presentation. The battles can be a bit slow, but the ring puzzle mechanics are fun in their own right. Despite its flaws, I had a great time with this game.

    It is an excellent game with very funny dialogues and situations, visually it is beautiful and the puzzles, although they are often tedious, give the game some difficulty.
    It's certainly not better than paper mario 64 or paper mario the thousand year door but it is really worth playing.

I enjoyed the characters and the classic paper Mario humor. The boss designs are really clever. And while the at-times convoluted battle system has incited quite a bit of controversy (I personally go back and forth on it), I think that to base your entire opinion of this game on that does a huge disservice to the aspects in which it excels. The writing (and humor!) are spectacular; the overworld, more vast, beautiful, and interconnected than we've ever experienced in a Paper Mario game; the soundtrack, one of the best & most diverse Nintendo has put out in years; the plot, surprisingly deep and positively rife with Easter eggs & little nods to the series' history. In fact, one of the game's "chapters" had me feeling so nostalgic for another all-time Nintendo classic that I couldn't help but smile for the whole 3 or 4 hours it took to complete it - you'll recognize it too, when you get there. (And yes, each chapter really is that fleshed out with multiple "dungeons", bosses, areas, etc. Not to mention the HUNDREDS of collectibles, many of which are extremely well-hidden, spread across the world - this will no doubt be completionists' favorite Paper Mario.)

    TL;DR - It's no PM64 or TTYD, nor does it necessarily try to be. But where the previous two titles in this series have done less with more, The Origami King at last does more with less. 8.4 / 10    … Expand

    People will feel mixed on the combat. Rather than resource management from Sticker Star or Color Splash, you attack by rearranging hordes of foes in a circle. You are always given enough spins and turns to perfectly clear regular enemies, and you get a damage boost from lining them up correctly. While this rewards players' puzzle-solving, it often times trivializes every battle in the game apart from boss battles, and many times I go through entire areas without ever seeing an enemy's attack animation. However, the bosses, while also puzzles, are well-crafted fights and definitely a highlight.

    Story and humor is top notch as always. Instead of badges, you can equip accessories to boost abilities in and out of combat. You can buy and equip boots and hammers to choose from that act like stickers or cards from Sticker Star or Color Splash. They have durability, but are so sturdy and easy to obtain that you rarely need to think twice about using them if the situation calls for it. Partners sometimes attack in battle after Mario but aren't player-controlled, and oftentimes Mario will kill the enemy before they can even do anything.

    As far as newer Paper Marios this one shines atop the rest and is legitimately a good puzzle game. It just might not be the Paper Mario fans have been clamoring for.    … Expand

    This game is a fun new addition to the Paper Mario series. The world is great, the story is great, and I love the Boss Battles. The only real complaint I have with the game is that the normal battles have no reward other than coins. All in all this is a great game and would recommend to anyone who wants to play a fun new and exciting Mario game.

It dragged in a couple places but overall the gameplay, environment, characters and music kept me invested. Very cool, I recommend picking this one up.

    Amazing Game, but not a "Thousand-Year Door 2."
    Enjoyable throughout the entire adventure and I would recommend this to any open-minded Paper Mario fan or anyone looking to get into the series

    A beautiful game, with a story that exceeded expectations. Despite Nintendo keeping the younger audience in mind, they masterfully tackled some rather mature topics. Origami King shines with it's colorful open world, unique personalities, and an enormous checklist of things to get done. The only drawback is the repetitive battle mechanics, but I absolutely forgive that flaw in favor of allA beautiful game, with a story that exceeded expectations.     Its a really fun game! The batle system can get anoying sometimes, but ingeneral this game is really good, its a solid 8, Its really colorfull and it has this very silly dumb sence of humor, its great. My favorite part of this game is the colectables, there is Toads to find all over the world, pices of the ground to fix and many other things. In general I haf a great time with this game

    Fun simple qnd looks beautiful. I wasnt expecting qlot from this but I've found myself just playing more as is a nice game.

    Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

    Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
