Everything feels built to frustrate. You move slow and battles are pointless. Some of the things the game makes you do feel like you have to look up online to figure out.

This is a step back for the paper Mario franchise.

Good game, funny texts ! i’ve grew up with the paper mario series and I know this game isn’t like the first paper mario or the all time favorite “TTYD” but it’s a good game in the end of the day. Try it out !

This is bad because it's not 1,000 year door. Your better off grabbing your money and putting it in the trash than buying this game. There are paper jokes, and a HORRIFYING battle system. This is a bad one

mention the loss of side-adventures like Peach sneaking around the castle. The ring system grows old quickly, and doesn’t draw you into the action. A lot of what made Paper Mario a blast has been lost or overly simplified this time around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario: The Origami King is a beautiful game with an interesting premise, that doesn't quite live up to the expectations of fans who long for TTYD. I won't gripe about the battle system, as my own thoughts are already echoed in several other reviews.

I loved the origami toads. You know the ones hidden ALL OVER the landscape? It made the world feel populated, and some of the puzzles to rescue them were ingenious and really required thinking outside the box. I was a bit disappointed when this mechanic disappeared from the last main area.

There are two understated parts of this game I would like to address, and would very much like to see more of; The first is integrating Boswer's minions into the NPCs as genuine characters. I'm sure this is a Paper Mario staple; I've only played SPM, and I don't count Sticker Star. But it was fun to see them going to a theme park (in cosplay, no less!) or sitting in a coffee house. it was invigorating to see them non-antagonistic, even friendly, towards Mario and the toads.

The other is the use of aside-dialogue in cutscenes. Even in normal gameplay, speech bubbles would pop up from characters as they mutter under their breath or try to get your attention. It made the world feel dynamic and alive, and much more integrated into Mario's adventure than in previous games.

However, I will address what dropped this game, for me, from a 8 or a 9 to a 7. The end of the story. Origami King picks up the baton from previous Paper Mario games like SPM when it comes to storytelling, only to drop it five feet from the finish line. It was abrupt, sad, and a bit confusing. The titular king's motivations are revealed to be thinner than the paper he is made of, and the method chosen to undo his actions end up... well, making it feel like the game never happened. I sat there wondering why I had just played the game. To make it worse, I can't find any sort of post-game other than completionism. I was left with a sudden feeling of "...wait, that's it?"

My other main gripe is that Princess Peach doesn't get to do anything. It's series like Paper Mario where the characters are allowed to break out of their standard roles a bit. Yeah, she still gets captured, but let her break out or be rescued and contribute to the plot! I almost forgot she was part of the game.

I really wanted to like Origami King, and I even recommended it to friends before I finished playing. I loved the journey, but I'm not sure the destination was worth the trip.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing Paper Mario since its very first release on N64 (I still remember my mom getting it for me at target) and I gotta say I had an absolute blast playing through this! I am doing my best to understand the complaints of other pessimistic reviewers but alas I think these people have succumbed to the horrible disease plaguing the human race known as "nostalgia". I think some of you other relics need to stop grasping onto a nearly 20 year old game known as TTYD and digging your puffed up expectation claws into every new Mario game. While I can't speak much on Color Splash and sticker star (haven't owned a Wii U until about 2 months ago/never bought sticker star) I would definitely say this game is equal to its "good" counterparts. I highly recommend buying this game!

    CONS (kinda):
-Battle system: Yes, you guys are right, the battle system was a bit weird at the beginning of the game. If you only played through 5 seconds of this game then you would most definitely hate it. If you are like me and enjoy a slight puzzle then its really not all that bad. The boss battles got me a little irritated at first, BUT, I stuck with it and learned how to chain the spaces together thus making me a master at boss battles! I do miss the old battle system from Paper Mario 64, however, I stopped feeding into the nostalgia trend awhile ago so for the most part I enjoy the battles. As for some of you that complain about not getting rewards, you serious Clark?? Stepping on an enemy you can easily defeat, you only get 10 coins, but you can get anywhere from 30-60 times that amount for taking the time to engage in a normal battle. So yes you do get rewarded extra, just not rewarded with items every other battle like the old days.

-Exploration: I did see a complaint in the reviews before I started playing about the world not having much to explore and I agree to an extent. There's still plenty to explore but just not as much as you would think playing through. For example places like outside the first temple, you would think there would be another area attached but nope, there's not. There is only a slight drop down to grab something, that was it. I was a little disappointed by this but once the temple was opened up my disappointment went away. Here is the counter argument to this exploration issue: Not many people want loooong drawn out areas. At times, a big area like that on a game like this can feel "overwhelming". I don't want to have to go through 50 areas just to get to the boss's door. I think they did a fairly good mixture in this game but I would have liked to see just a few more exploring areas, though not TOO many.

-Character design: I can also somewhat agree with reviewers that the character design did lack a bit. While I do not think at all they should ever get rid of the classic Mario enemies, I do think that the boss's could have gotten a slight makeover. I understood why the boss's were the way they were, but they honestly could have been less bland at times. I just remember thinking "Oh it's a... hole puncher". Y 'all really couldn't make it into like a hole punch robot or something more original? I'm not gonna dock any stars for that though because I did have fun with boss battles.

-No leveling system: I miss the leveling systems of past, I really do. All other games I play have leveling systems but this one does not. The leveling system is essentially finding a different type of "collectible". Another counter argument to this: Do any of you really miss grinding the same goombas over and over again for miniscule amounts of coins and EXP? I know I don't! This new system I think prevented grinding and wasting away your time/life on levels. I think at the end of the day I would honestly rather explore the landscape than sit in the same area for hours feeling like I barely accomplished anything.

I am running out of characters so I will try to keep my Pros list to minimum.

    PROS:

-Music: I think every paper Mario has had a few good tracks to nod your head to, but WOW the music in this game was pure gold!! Loved the vellumental boss music! sounded almost like Lindsey Stirling!

-Scenery/Artwork: A+++ for the visuals!! almost breathtaking at times! Vivid colors and very creatively pieced together landscape!

-Gameplay: I had so much fun working my way through different puzzles, scenarios, and levels! I think the creativity of the game is it what really kept me hooked! Rebuilding the world with bits of paper confetti, crumpled up toad hunting, unique boss battles, Shogun studios as a whole, Paper Macho enemies, etc. I could keep listing things but I will end it there!

The game as a whole was amazing!! I could talk about this game for hours! Definitely one I will be replaying in the future!

Starting off with the least strong suits of the game, the combat system still feels like the aspect that sticks out for being the most awkward thing about the game. It's not a bad fighting system by any means, and the incentives, this being the coins, have become better over time, but it still lacks that revamped rpg feel that we have been yearning for. For the rest of the game, I cannot find too many flaws in it. The story is engaging and filled with comedy and emotions; its characters make said story shine brighter with the amazing scripting and dialogue. You'll definitely get an feels alive handful of laughs out of this game. The world building has been done to where each new location you visit feels alive and real. The people living in each section have their own little cultures and unique quirks that interact with their environment without it feeling unnatural. I will emphasize on the characters since i felt that they're one of, if not the strongest, most enjoyable part of the game. The rosks taken by Nintendo for each dialogue and each interaction with the characters was at sometimes shocking, but always welcomed with excitement and more laughter. This especially happened with the more brutal and creepy moments, as well as the more daring comedic writing. I had an absolute blast playing this game from start to finish, and even got that special feeling of not wanting the game to end so the characters within it would keep living within such an interesting world. Color Splash might've been a small step in the right direction, but Origami King is its own gem with it's own unique feel that reaches out to many old aspects that people missed about the series while keeping its own personality intact. This game is a classic i would've loved to grow up with. Expand

Two hours in and I'm getting really bored. I read all the reviews and was hyped this might actually be "the one", the long awaited decent Paper Mario game. Good story, music environments, battle systems, partners are back, finally!... Oh... wait a second, not really.

    Cons / Just OK:

-Coming from TTYD, combat makes no sense. You do a ton of damage even if you miss the cues, you can essentially one hit anything. The puzzles are boring, hand holdy (you get 2-4 puzzle spins and attacks!) and tedious.

-No exp, no real rewards from battle. You're instead SHOWERED with coins. Will we finally hit millions or even billions of coins in the next iteration of this game?

-I'm easily entertained, I laugh at almost anything, but I need to ask, where is this humor everyone keeps talking about? I smirked once or twice, but that's about it. Haha, Luigi dropped his hat...haha...?

-Contrary to what some have been saying, the environments are just OK in my opinion. It almost feels like people have forgotten how vibrant other Paper Mario or even recent Nintendo games have been. Have we forgotten how beautiful Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, etc, have been? This game is no where near that level of epicness yet some reviewers are claiming this game is on a whole other level. This game feels just like par for the course.

-Maybe just the way the game is designed or just me, but it feels like the game is running between 20-30 fps often.

-I have no opinion on the music, haven't noticed anything standout or bad either way.

    Pros:

-I do appreciate the dark story. If you think about it, it's really **** up at times. You'll have your first taste of this dark story during your very first fight. But not just the dark story, the story overall is VERY well put together and different from any Mario game I've played. I won't spoil anything, it's something you need to experience yourself!

-There is some clever and cute puzzles in the outer world. You need to really investigate an area sometimes to make sure you got everything from it. Sometimes I would spend several minutes trying to figure out how to get to that one ledge or spot. There's also a lot of hidden areas too which is nice.

-Bowser being an ally has some interesting implications to the story and I appreciate this change. It does get old with "Bowser bad guy again" trope.

    Overall

Overall, I think that the battle system has once again been the downfall. I'm not sure why Nintendo experiments with every iteration of this game when they know exactly what would work. If you put in the old battle system, I EASILY can give this game a 9-10. But since Nintendo can't bear to listen to its die hard fans, I have to give it a 2/10.

Back to the Bug Fables, a real "Paper Mario" game.

Indeed, I've always been in love with the Paper Mario art style, ever since I first played Thousand Year Door back in middle school. Sad to say, I've tried just about all of them, and with the *POSSIBLE* exception of Super Paper Mario, they have all lacked the RPG magic through which Thousand Year Door had won over my heart. Each new Paper Mario release is a more hollow shell of their legendary Gamecube predecessor, with the heart and soul of the game - 1000 yr Door's *actually fun* turn based battle sequences and *crucial* leveling system - smashed like an origami Toad under Mario's puzzle-solving hammer, leaving the miniscule spark of spirit that remains in the franchise to be painted over (no pun intended - PS Color Splash sucked too) with ever-shinier visuals and marketing in an attempt to hide the fact that ever since those Gamecube glory days, Nintendo just keeps missing the mark on delivering an ENTERTAINING gaming experience with their exhausted Paper Mario franchise. I stupidly pre-ordered Origami King, as I do with every new Paper Mario (I never learn my lesson) with the earnest hope that somehow, someway, somebody at Nintendo will realize that the main thing that made the Paper Mario RPG fun was that it had... hmmm... lets see.... RPG ELEMENTS. Origami King lacks all elements of an RPG except for a storyline, which I guess I could admit was relatively decent for the first 3 levels/world portions that I managed to get through before being permanently sedated by the almost savagely boring gameplay, which revolves around painstakingly searching visually-stimulating environments for Toads folded into dumb shapes and sequestered in even dumber hiding places, with a heavy dose of doing-your-best-to-avoid-agonizingly-unsatisfying-puzzle-battles-with-classic-mario-series-villains. In my dream scenario where Nintendo actually reads and processes any of the above grievances, I'm sure they'd retort by ignoring 90% of them and fixating on the final point: "no! These Koopahs are different, you jerk! They're made of Origami now!!!" Touche, Nintendo. Touche. Now be a dear and walk me through the Nintendo eShop refund process before I have my boy Mario bop your pretty Origami head with his hammer. Expand

Really sad that people are posting a bunch of negative reviews even though they’ve never played the game because it’s not a TTYD 2. In my personal opinion, I think the game is pretty great overall. While yes, I’ll admit that the battle system isn’t perfect at times, it really doesn’t bother me all that much and I actually kinda really enjoy the puzzle aspect of battling. Kinda gave me flashbacks to Super Paper Mario.
I recommend you actually try the game for yourself and make up your own opinions on the game instead of basing it on the reviews from toxic Paper Mario purists who are stuck in the past and aren’t willing to give new things a try.

The normal battles are very easy and only a few times did I fail to complete a puzzle from battling. If you are running of time, you can pay for more time, if you can't figure out the first step, you can pay 150 coins to get the first part of the answer. Coins are very common and worthless as they can be found respawning in the world or after finishing a battle. This makes battles nearly impossible to lose. Battles don't give you anything other than coins and confetti since both are very common in the world, they make battles pointless. To do more damage during battles, you need weapons that you can buy or find for free in the world. Weapons break so you'll need to keep getting new and better weapons as they break. I've never needed to buy any weapons as I found the free weapons were more than enough to get me through the whole game. Later in the game, some bosses start having one hit OKs and they are pretty BS but at least avoidable, but avoiding them makes them super easy. I also didn't like the bosses, most of them were way too easy and short or annoying. The elemental bosses were super annoying. I did like a few of them tho, not going to so which because I don't want to spoil it.

The world is very pretty and looks very nice. Mario moves very slow and doesn't do anything but walk making moving around very boring and long. Some areas have vehicles and they were fun to drive at first, but halfway through, they overstay their welcome. You can fill in the world with confetti to get more coins or new areas or find toads to maybe get something or nothing. I found both boring so I never wasted my time on them. You have to go around and destroy the streamers blocking the entrance to peach's cattle, doing so lets you hold more confetti, which is useless since you can easily to get more.

However, I can say is that there are small sections of the game where the game mixes things up in the overworld with some fun random event. I'm not going to say exactly to avoid spoilers. But, It's what kept me coming back to play. It had me guessing what's the next random thing they'll do.

Overall, there are fun and funny moments but my problem is that in between is very boring and pointless gameplay. So, I'm mixed but leaning towards didn't like it.

This game appears to be a fun and unique "adventure game" but when playing it just falls apart. The combat becomes horribly boring and brain dead easy. The only fun parts of the game are the boss fights and yet the final boss is so disappointing and void of charm. This game lacks all the charm and heart that makes paper mario games fun and it's clear Nintendo has given up on this f ranchise.

It's a fun game, it actually is, the dialogue is clever and funny, to the point of making the story and everyone a joke, which can be ok depending on who is playing, the visuals are gorgeous, even tho for me paper Mario was never about the pape, it was called Mario story for a reason in Japan, this game has a story so simple it's even simpler than pm64. It is in the gameplay where this game is lackluster or mediocre at most it is tedious, tiresome and it's not required even tho the game forces them on you because in other way, they would be pointless. So, for me, the game is fun, and may be worth a rent. I imagine it like going to a theater to go see the phantom of the opera and you get a musical without the story just random people dancing with the costumes of the characters, it's fun, and it's still awesome to look at but it's not the phantom of the opera. It's a kids show, and that's what this game is. It's just a game, not more, not less, it does as much wrong as it does good, so it's a 5. Just mediocre. That said, as people are giving it 10s, I'll fight back those with a low score of my own, even if it doesn't represent the score I believe it deserves. Expand

This is a great action adventure game with a lot of fixes from the last two games. The atmosphere and aesthetic is great along with the music. The battle can be tedious if you don't like puzzles. The battle system is so intuitive and clever. It's a puzzle which you gotta slide or rotate the rings. It might seem weird at first but you'll get the hang of it as its goes on. Coins are actually important, you'll spend them all the time. So the battle is much more important . The characters are so charming with their own story and passion. Bobby actually sacrificed himself to save Olivia. That really adds a lot of personality to him. And Olivia is just so cute and adorable. Even though the RPG elements of the older Paper Mario games were so simple that even a toddler could understand them, the growth system has been completely removed, instead relying on finding the occasional heart container or accessory to become stronger over time. It’s ironic because the boss battle system in this game is the most complex fighting system I’ve ever seen in a Mario RPG, so I can’t believe Nintendo considers this game to be more accessible to casual players. Battles that aren't mandatory feel pointless and are usually not worth the effort, since the only reward you get is coins, coins, coins, and more coins. The confetti mechanic feels wrong, since confetti is so common, I have no idea why there is even a limit to how much confetti you can hold. "Oh, I ran out of confetti. Time to walk over to some trees to get some more." The confetti mechanic feels like it's there mostly to pad out time. Bosses, while admittedly creative, aren't all that memorable and are laughable in comparison to some of the stronger designs in the series. There are many other issues with this game, but it's a good time-waster if you're looking for that. As for me, I was hoping for a more robust, involved Paper Mario. While the world exploration scratches that itch, the combat, the confetti, the character designs being mostly lackluster, and the pointless combat encounters crawling through the stages leave a bitter taste in my mouth, where I expected a sweet one. 4/10 for me, but again, if you like this game, don't let me rain on your parade. The past few installments I’ve skipped out on because I’ve heard they deviate from the RPG style of the originals. I had such high hopes for the Origami King.

    Pros:
Funny. The dialogue will have you laughing, which I always loved about these games. The graphics are great too - big, bold, lush colors, and lots of well-crafted environments and characters.

    Cons:
The battle gameplay. Horrible. NOT FUN. An actual nuisance to understand, much less enjoy or master. Brutal, unexplained battle rules that change without any notice, preface, or reason. One of my favorite parts of Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door was the battle mechanic. This game has completely ruined that aspect. Boss battles are boring, regular battles are annoying, and the motion mechanic is a headache. (You have to quickly shake, slam, lift, etc. your Switch over and over again to defeat bosses). Poorly thought out and even more poorly executed.

Each battle is accompanied by a “puzzle” - you have to line enemies up in a certain way in a certain time frame. It is seriously unfun, and often stressing and frustrating.

There are no EXP points. So basically you get some extra health as you go through the game, but even that simple element from the original games is gone.

    Summary:
Honestly, I don’t know who this game is for. Fans of the originals will dislike the major game changes, and new players are more likely to enjoy Odyssey or something in the classic Mario vein. I started out earnestly trying to like this game, and have ended up regretting buying it the more I’ve played it. I will definitely be trading it in.

Why the hell did they think it was going to work for Origami King? As the quote goes "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Expand

Still fun but not nearly as addictive as the previous titles in the series. Unfortunate. Expand

The game looks very good, but the gameplay is often very monotonous and boring. The story is not very exciting or interesting and the characters are interchangeable.

Try harder Nintendo. Maybe team with Square and rerelease Super Mario RPG to give us something worth playing.

I’ve been so confused by the negativity around this game. This paper mario has been so refreshing to play through so far! I’ve felt rewarded for looking in every nook and cranny I can find and hammering all sorts of the overworld searching for secrets. The music is very good as well. Most combat is avoidable and the combat that isn’t is usually shaken up to keep you on your toes! II’ve been so confused by the negativity around this game. The music is very good as well. Most combat is avoidable and the combat that isn’t is usually shaken up to keep you on your toes! I especially love the ring puzzle system, it’s extremely fun and enjoyable and really adds some needed depth to combat so It isn’t just a button mashing fest. Though you could argue that some of the puzzles are easy i’d say that it doesn’t really matter because at least for me it’s still fun to solve.

I’ve played Paper Mario for the N64, TTYD, and Super Paper Mario on the Wii (was a personal favorite story wise for me) and I even played Color Splash.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is without a doubt worth playing.

The best Paper Mario since Gamecube's. Amazing soundtrack, original battle system, beautiful art style and funny dialogues. Play it and enjoy this excellent RPG!

A very boring and repetitive game. The fights are as useless as last paper games. Not worth it

it's totally awful! A game which is forcing you to fight every god damn monster. Save points are far from each other when you died you will start from the last save point and fight with the monsters again. Also, don't let you run away from the fight. Complicated fight mechanics, totally **** awful. Save your money.

El juego en sí está bien al principio, pero se hace muy repetitivo, a las pocas horas de jugarlo, empiezas a aburrirte. No consigue enganchar.

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
