It is an absolute joy to play from start to finish and new elements are added to the combat during every boss fight, and within many encounters, which keeps the already amazing combat fresh throughout the entire duration of the game. Speaking of the combat, nintendo absolutely hit the nail on the head with it. The combat is unlike anything ive seen in an rpg and it is executed very well. Even though exp isnt gained from battles, I found myself willingly fighting the random enemies around the expansive open world just so i could learn all of the differnet ring combinations that the enemies could be arranged into. Also, the story in this game is by no means complex, but i think that is is sufficient for what the game wanted to achieve, and it does have its dark and heart touching moments. Overall, after the last 2 entries in the paper mario franchise, this feels like a much needed breath of fresh air, and makes me hopefully for the future of paper mario. Expand

First time playing a Paper Mario game and haven't played anything else since it's release. Not comparing to anything else and new to this series I've found it fun and somewhat challenging. Some puzzles so far have had me really using my brain which I can say has been welcome since I seem to be using it less during quarantine...

It’s combat is a mix between turn based RPG battles and ring puzzles. The puzzles gain you an attack bonus, and get pretty damn complicated as the game goes on. It’s bosses come in two forms, Vulumentals and Legion of Stationary. Vulamentals are origami beasts that look like bosses you would see in a traditional RPG. Legion of Stationary bosses are office supplies (You learn why as you play the game) that became sentient. They are normally guarding streamers that engulf peaches castle. Along your journey you can free toads, collect treasures, and fill in holes with confetti. Collected toads show up in battle. You can pay them in coins to do special actions in battle, and help you defeat enemies. I think most of the games mechanics work great, and the battles aren’t nearly as repetitive as SS or CS. The main twist is the weapons. They are more powerful than your normal attacks. You can buy them, but be sure to be stocked up as they will break eventually. It’s weapon durability system isn’t nearly as brutal as BoTWs so you don’t need to spend too many coins on them. But stronger enemies will be much easier with the high end weapons, so be sure to have the right amount. It isn’t the Paper Mario for everyone, but it’s still pretty damn good. Expand

    Battles are unintuitive and frustrating;
Visuals are fine, but too paper-ish. Look at PM64, TYD and SPM: Paper-ish world does not make a good Paper Mario, and a good PM does not require one either.
    And no, no real partners...
    6/10 as normal gamer;
    0/10 for PM series fan.

Many enemies are skippable, thankfully, and I think this helps make up for the tedium of the regular battles. I am glad they tried something different with the battle system, even though it isn’t the greatest approach in my opinion. Other than that, I am thoroughly enjoying my time with Paper Mario: The Origami King. There are twists and turns around every corner, and I love all the collectibles. The Graphic is very good and the journey makes fun. The Boss Battles are cool, but sadly the normal battles are a bit moot, because you only get money for it and normally you doesn't have money issues in this game xD

Here is a real review from someone who actually played the game:

It's a good game, however the 1st chapter is basically one long and slow tutorial. If you can endure that, then you will enjoy the rest of the game after. Because of the poor start, I can't reasonably give this game a 9/10. It is a solid 8/10 game for the variety they managed to put in this game, mixing elements from all previous Paper Mario games and simplifying some things. They could have made the opening so much better but unfortunately they didn't. They saved all the good ideas for chapter 2 and onward.

This game does not deserve to be rated lower than Color Splash, and anyone who has played Origami King will see this game is definitely worth the 8/10 I am giving it.

RPGs at their core have a focus on characters, dialog, and the quest. Origami King delivers on all these so it is definitely an RPG. The rest (leveling system, skills, and turn-based combat) is all optional and diverse among different RPGs.

Leveling: Rather than gaining xp from individual battles, you level up after each boss. You don't have a visible numbered level, but your base damage increases and you can one shot weaker enemies from the previous area outside of battle. Your hp increases from this and side quests as well, Zelda heart container-style.

Also small note here, battles are not pointless. They give you resources and progress the story. The way the battles are designed is so that it is pointless to GRIND them. This is a good thing in my opinion, since you never have to needlessly battle enemies on repeat like in past games. Origami King gives you plenty of tools at your disposal so the entire game is a grind-free experience. The fact that people are complaining they can't grind for more xp shows that they are not expecting newer games to be smarter and more seamless.

The game is structured so that you essentially complete 2 dungeons and 2 bosses per world. So the pacing at which your power increases is well done here. Battling extra grunts for xp is not a thing here and frankly I'm glad, such a thing is not necessary and would only make the game more tedious if it was present.

The fighting system starts off deceptively too easy, however the further you go into the game the more challenging it gets. You WILL get to a point where you are stumped to solve it and have to use items to creatively find an alternate path to success. Thankfully the game gives you the tools and chances for a fair shot at figuring out a way to win without being too easy.

The game gives you lots of HP and healing items to start with. However by as early as the 2nd boss you will be hit with large amounts of damage that can give you a game over if you're not careful.

One of the biggest disappointments is a lack of partners. They aren't playable and don't have unique abilities. They are just tagging along, one at a time, and just deal one decently strong attack every so often.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a downright terrible game with unfun and useless combat, a nonsensical and uncreative story, and relentlessly unfunny writing.

The game is fun in it's own merit but I often question myself the point of putting battles in the game when their sole purpose isn't completely weighed out. Origami King claims to be an Action Adventure when it has some hint of elements of being a turn based RPG- yet doesn't take full steps to be such a thing.

If it's not a fully-fledged RPG or a fully-fledged Action Adventure then which is it? It attempts both but it doesn't feel it nails either quite well to be honest. Origami King tries too hard to be too many things with no clear focus. The writing and charm relies very heavily on current tropes and topics so I find returning to this game years later to be quite inefficient.

+ Lovely presentation be it level design, visuals and soundtrack
    - Tries too hard to be too many things at once with no clear focus
    - Writing is one-off making replayability none-existent
    - Somewhat repetitive gameplay when exploring. Lots of button prompts/hammering to gather resources that are only temporary.

If you're looking for an adventure game to enjoy once then this is it. Something to remember fondly come the following years is something I believe Origami King will fall behind at.

Great soundtrack, fantastic visuals, good partners, an innovative battle system which it has a lot of potential. They could have gone a little further with the battle system.

Anyways, it is a very good game despite the review bombing just because it is NOT Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door. Some people need to learn to have fun with different games :)

This game is an absolute joy to play from it's graphics to it's music and it's witty dialogue. The levels are huge and impressive and the puzzles are a brain teaser. But unfortunately, this game falls flat on it's battle system as most would tell you...

The story starts off with Mario and Luigi discovering a new villain by the name of King Olly, who plans on folding up the entire paper world into origami. King Olly has already folded up most of Bowser's Minions and even Princess Peach. Determined to foil his plans, Mario teams up with his new friend Olivia to stop King Olly and his evil plans. To do this, the pair must travel to the farthest reaches of the Earth to find 5 colored streamers that are holding Princess Peach's Castle captive. And so their journey begins!

Exploring the gigantic worlds the game has to offer is a joyride you could do over and over again! The levels are beautiful to look at and the music in the background fits the aesthetic perfectly! This game is also a completionist's dream-come-true, as their are lots of Toads to save and treasures to collect.

The game is also very charming with it's characters and what they have to say. Your primary partner, Olivia, is not a nagging hassle like Kersti was in "Paper Mario: Sticker Star". There are also many other characters you'll meet, like Bobby and Professor Toad who prove to be very helpful on your quest.

As mentioned before (and probably every review here will tell you), the battle system just isn't as fun (nor effective) as the developers like to think. The game features a 360-degree battle system in which you are tasked with moving the enemies around a turntable to line them up just right to your strategic advantage before attacking them. The battle system's concept in very unique, but it can sometimes be a little unfair. For every battle, you are only given a set amount of time and moves to place the enemies where you want them. This can lead to frustrating moments (like what I went through) if one does not get good at this new system. Boss Battles also work in a similar fashion, but instead of lining up the enemies, you're tasked with building a path for Mario to take to collect power-ups, avoid traps and defeat the boss. I found boss battles to be much more fun than regular battles, but unfortunately, both battle systems are very unrewarding, as their is no Experience Points to be gained from fighting, despite the game having RPG roots.

"Paper Mario: The Origami King" will surprise players who aren't expecting much from a newer entry to the series, and will be delighted to see elements like Partners, Badges and Audiences implemented from the first 3 "Paper Mario" games. At the same time, for those who enjoy some of the more modern entries in the series, weapons from "Paper Mario: Sticker Star" and several jokes and Easter Eggs from "Paper Mario: Color Splash" make return here as well. The latest game in the series yet has the upsides of having a unique story, gorgeous graphics, catchy music, lovable characters, giant worlds, and lots of collectibles. The game's only true flaw is it's battle system, (which in my opinion is still better than "Sticker Star" and "Color Splash"'s battle systems). If you have any doubt in this game, don't! Because "Paper Mario: The Origami King" is an adventure like no other!

This game is getting absolutely torn down by old fans that are upset it's not an RPG anymore or didn't get past the slow first hour but frankly Origami King is still fun, funny, interesting, very unexpected, and will keep you guessing the whole time. It's also WAY longer than you'd initially think, especially if you go hunting down all the toads, trophies, and other collectibles.

This is one of the most unique games I've played in a long time, and it is a complete breath of fresh air.

I know some people aren't a fan of the puzzle combat but I really do encourage you to give yourself over to it because it is a lot of fun once you get into it and start challenging yourself to get perfect runs, and the boss battles are true highlights as each has it's own way of making path obscured and they WILL throw you off once or twice.

I almost never write these reviews but I really do feel compelled to for this because I'm seeing this game not get half the credit it deserves do to fans of the old games being upset things have changed. Origami King is a truly fun, unique, and interesting game from top to bottom and if you give it a real chance it's great.

Also, people saying characters are boring need to play the game to at least the yellow streamer. Bobby is one of the best characters in the franchise and you'll see why.

As we all know, the series decidedly did NOT improve after that. I have never played Sticker Star or Color Splash because everything that I have seen and read about these games just made me sad.

So when Nintendo announced a new Paper Mario for the Switch, I was of course vaguely optimistic at first, but then really more pessimistic than anything else, because this looked essentially like Color Splash 2. I complained about the absence of: XP, badges, a traditional battle system, partners, unique characters from the Mushroom Kingdom etc. before the game even came out.

Nevertheless, I could not help but feel pretty excited for the release, maybe because the whole year has been pretty slow on Switch, or maybe just because I had not played a Paper Mario game in half an eternity. Despite prematurely hating on the game, I decided to just give it a chance and downloaded it on release date. At least after playing it, I would actually know what I'm talking about.

So, was I right about the sticking points above? Yes. I believe that if Nintendo implemented all these tropes from the first two Paper Mario games that established the franchise and made it popular IN THE FIRST PLACE, Origami King would be a MASTERPIECE. The way it is now, it is "just" a very good game.

How could that be? How can the game be good even if it misses all these crucial elements mentioned above? Well, the writing, for one thing, is absolutely superb. This is probably one of the funniest and wittiest video games ever created. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous and the level/world design is very inspired and original. All the chapters are very distinct from another and offer a huge variety of approaches to game structure. The soundtrack...THE SOUNDTRACK! Do me a favour: Go on Youtube right now and listen to "Snif City" and tell me that that's NOT an absolute banger. The game is full of memorable tunes like this from all kinds of different genres.

Navigating the over-world, looking for treasures and hidden Toads and filling up holes with confetti is very rewarding.

Now, for the combat system: It is very unusual and I would prefer a traditional combat system or, at the very least, to have XP re-integrated. The last point would give you an actual incentive to battle. As it is now, you only get coins and confetti, which can easily be obtained by other methods in most situations. However, this style of combat can still be fun. The regular battles kind of started to annoy me by the end of the game, simply because they took up so much time, but the boss battles were always exciting and interesting (if a little too easy, like the whole game).

All in all, Paper Mario is just FUN. You know, the unique Nintendo brand of straight-forward FUN. I was just having a good time playing this and I found myself wishing that the game would go on longer at the end because I was enjoying myself so much. I'm currently in the final throes of 100%ing the game and I'm probably going to play it again at some time. So I can only recommend this to everyone looking for a good time. Even if you don't necessarily agree with the direction that the series has taken after Thousand Year Door, like me, I would still strongly encourage you to give it a chance. You might just be surprised at how much there is to like about this game.

The writing is some of Nintendo's best, both story-wise and characters. The humor had me laughing and engaged every step of the way. There are some extremely memorable characters here (looking at you Bobby and Olivia). The puzzles are engaging and you feel a strong sense of progression as you make your way through the adventure.

The amount of content you get in the game is huge. So many areas to explore, so many different collectables.

Now for the bad: The combat. The combat itself is not bad, but it is for sure the weakest part of the game. If they allowed you to control your alley and pick your ally's action I think it would have really beefed it up.

I very much liked the boss battles. Especially the bosses which did not require the ring style combat.

I have never been so engaged in a Mario adventure. True score is a 9/10 but i will give a 10 to rebuff the haters.

The battle system is unique compared to other turn based games, as it has puzzle elements. The game is mostly simple and easy, but these puzzle elements are ramped up during boss fights, which I found horrible. During boss fights, you must create pathways to attack. They are usually littered with obstacles, you have limited turns, are on a timer, and often have to pick up items along the way. There is a specific way to beat them and you have to figure it out on the fly. It is needlessly complicated and vague.

This game has faults, but they are outweighed by a good soundtrack, a heartfelt ending, and many unforgettable moments and characters this game has to offer.

Gameplay - Great. I had fun with the battle system. In the end, depending on my mood, I would battle the enemies or I would kill them with a jump or hammer without entering into battle mode. 90% of the time I would battle them because I would receive a lot of coins like that. If I just jump or hammer them, I would only get one coins. I did enjoy the puzzle element of each battle. No two battles were ever alike because of the freshness of this system.

What I am surprised to read in most reviews, is that you end up running from the fights. I do not know if what they meant when they say “run” is that you actually can one hit kill the enemies because you are powerful enough AFTER leveling up with hearts. During my 32 hour play through I never run from anything. Also, apart from coins and confetti, the incentive for battle is the puzzle solving and kickass music.

Also the other problem of to much coin of confetti. Me, personally, my main source of coins and confetti for the entire game were battles. First, lets talk about coins. I needed coins to buy items or trophies, They were EXPENSIVE. I even run out of money once. AFTER 25 hours, when you reach a special island (which is optional), you get overloaded with coins AFTER completing a trial. That was near the final part of the game though. Second, lets talk about confetti, I know you can get it on trees or flowers. That is an emergency source of confetti. When you are exploring, fighting, covering holes and discovering secrets, your main source of confetti are the fights. Of course if during that whole action process, no enemies are left and you run out of confetti to cover that last portion of a hole, THEN you get it from a tree or a flower.Trees and flowers are not your main source of confetti.

A lot reviewers out there sound like they wanted to rush through the game. In that case, it is obvious their main source of confetti was going to be nature and their main source of coins was just going to be the environment. Then, because they were rushing an avoiding battles, the few battles they would get into, they would just pay the toads 100-200 coins to solve the puzzle an automatically win. If I played like this, I would also detest the game.

Another thing I see that a lof of reviewers fail to mention, is that this game give you OPTIONS on how difficult you want it to be. For example, there are charms that give you more health or more defense. There is a way to have toads solve the puzzles in each battle if you pay them. If you do not want to pay them, than some puzzles in battles you will not solve and then you will rely on buying more powerful items to fight a longer fight. All of these things are OPTIONAL. Personally, I always solved the puzzles. I only used the toads help when my energy was low an I could not risk getting killed.

The game is just a breath of fresh air! It is so beautiful, funny and creative. I needed a game as original as this for a long time. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Also, do not read other reviews, because there are idiots that spoil some parts.

Boss battles are varied and fun. Battles can be mixed with some being rpg like and others being more free or adventure based.

Story? It's okay. Not amazing but it's okay. What they did well though was give us characters throughout that mean something to us and have consequences for each action.

    Nice enough satisfying ending.

Reading other reviews. People say you get too many coins. That's true at the start of the game. Until you start hitting item after item that costs a fortune. Though mushrooms and so on stay cheap.

A few fun moments throughout in the story I'd say too, daftness, sillyness. It's nice.

Though.... There are too many toads at times, haha.

I honestly find the user rating at the time of writing this to be quite harsh. I recommend this game.

The game has such incredible writing, it deserves some extra time in the spotlight. These small things however do make it hard to recommend to someone who likes charging through a game. The world here was made to be slowly wandered through, so if you're up for that type of gameplay, you will have a blast running around and hitting everything with your hammer. The mechanics are fun and a bit simple, but there are so many great ideas that it's hard to ignore how innovative this game is. It may not be the classic Paper Mario RPGs from our pasts, but its something more. Something new. While the old formula didn't need fixing, this game surpasses it and I will be glad to get more of this style of game. If this game sounds REMOTELY fun to you, get it. Seriously. The story is good and funny. My only complaint is the battle system. In game battle requires you to move the monsters to certain positions to increase damage. This is fun at first, but will be a little repetitive after 50~60 matches. The rewards for battles are all coins, which would be more interesting if we can get more different items. Despite these complaints, I still pretty enjoy the whole game and I would recommend people with switch should give it a try.

Regular battles I found fun, but because you only get coins, to but weapons, it's and endless loop only if you care to buy weapons. You can genuinely just go through the whole game fighting no regular enemies and just find hearts to make you stronger. However, because I enjoyed the battles, this wasn't a negative for me. Boss battle offer a real challenge at times, and I did have troubles certain moments where it got a little frustrating

Characters are charming, especially Olivia and there are some genuine, touching moments here that I wasn't expecting. No, you don't have partners, but I don't find the game suffers by lacking it, as the script is actually funny with a lot of heart. I enjoyed reading dialogue from Toads to all other NPC's. I was caught off guard a few times by how much I laughed out loud, or felt very strongly for Olivia or even the Bomb Om.

Music is fantastic and at times surprising that it's in a Paper Mario game. Each song fits the mood and scenery perfectly

All in all, give it a shot if you can, if it's not your taste I can definitely see why; it doesn't fit the traditional mold of most RPG'S, which is a huge ask, but if you're willing to play outside your comfort zone, you won't be disappointed!

Nice game, but the not best. The battle system it’s amazing but with some problem, the story is great but not the best... anyway I recommend this game to all Nintendo Switch owners

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Consistent theme throughout. Lots of puzzles. Not a fan of ALL the battles being done through the puzzle ground lay out (meaning the basic folded soldiers, i avoided them to simply avoid the 5minutes it took to battle them). Love the story throughout. The ending, was heart breaking to me. I didn't want to see Olivia become competitive nonexistent. My only complaint really is just all the battles were the same. In comparison I would say the super paper mario wii is still superior. I hope to see more super paper mario games in the future. Expand

Not a really complex story, but nevertheless good. The game play may seem repetitive for some people which is reasonable. Really appreciate the origami designs and thoughts put into the game to make it coherent.

I just finished the game and really enjoyed every minute of it. Clearly, I made the mistake to look at reviews before I started playing. So, I do the odd thing and write in an review to better not look at reviews for this game.

If you always thought that a more „jump and runny“ Paper Mario Game would be nice, this is an excellent choice for you. I especially loved the individual areas.

If you always thought that a more „jump and runny“ Paper Mario Game would be nice, this is an excellent choice for you. I especially loved the individual areas. They all are very different, extremely beautiful in graphics, always filled with new ideas and never boring. Do not bother too much about the battles. The game gives you plenty of opportunities to avoid them (even without literarily running away from enemies). The boss battles are great. When I noticed that „weapons“ are wearing off, I thought that would be a „downer“ like when I heard about it in „Breath of the Wild“. But like in Zelda just don‘t worry, you‘ll always have enough hammers and shoes at your disposal. I never backtracked once. I personally consider the game not to be too easy to be enjoyable. Yes, you will hardly see a „Game Over“ screen, but that is not something that makes the game less fun to me.

The world, while nothing too special, is interesting to explore and full of decent puzzles and zany characters (not even just Toads, which is very nice), with the new exposition fairy, Olivia, being a particular standout. The graphics are aesthetically pleasing and fit the “paper” theme very well, the locales you visit are fun and interesting (the samurai-themed amusement park most of all), and the music is also quite good. Even with those positives, I have my gripes with the game: the lack of EXP, the mediocre battle system, and the story, in that order. While you can find Max Hearts and purchase accessories, there was no incentive to battle enemies for almost any reason due to there being no experience. It’s better than Sticker Star, of course, but a third game with a lack of EXP is a worrying trend. The battle system is original and fairly interesting, but a lot of it is just frustrating, trying to figure out how to line up enemies. I had much more fun after getting the puzzle solver item, but even then I found myself just paying Toads to do the lining up for me. The only thing you get from battles are coins, and since those are scattered all around the world, there isn’t much of an incentive to fight anything but the mandatory battles. The plot, lastly, is a very simple stop-the-bad-guy-from-taking-over-the-world story with no frills attached. Olly isn’t an interesting antagonist, with almost no personality besides being evil, and he looks like an emo teenager. There were a lot of missed opportunities for fights; the whole thing is that Olly is turning characters into evil origami. There could’ve been an Origami Peach fight, an Origami Bowser fight, or even an Origami Luigi fight, but it’s all Bowser’s minions, these new elemental spirit creatures (who aren’t interesting enough to make up for how long you spend running around looking for them), and origami-making tools. There was even a mention of how the Captain guy you find stole the submarine from the spa area (it makes sense in context), and I was convinced there’d be a fight or at least a mention of it. Nope. While definitely better than the last two installments in the series, Paper Mario: The Origami King lacks a lot of what made the first three games so special and I feel absolutely no need to return and play to 100% completion, or even to play it again. Overall, a short but fun experience with a few flaws. Expand

For example, the battle system. At first I was interested because it was different from your standard Turn-based combat because of the the tile switching and stuff. And it is! It’s a pretty good battle system. However, the attacking itself is a bit... weird. A perfect attack and a weak attack have almost no difference in damage. And there are items, but there’s no reason to use them since they do less damage than normal weapons and are really just no different. You can also defend, but that’s only useful during bossfights really. There’s also toad town wich you can go to to buy weapons and items, but you always have a huge supply of them, so there’s really no reason to. The system is a lot better during bossfights, as there’s a lot more different combinations you can make and different things you can do. Talking about bossfights, using regular everyday objects such as scissors, tape, or rubber bands. The bossfights are a lot of fun. So, the battle system is pretty good, but has a big flaw.

The story is phenomenal. There’s just so much charm in it. That definitely gets a 10/10 from me, no questions asked.

The graphics are pretty good. I mean, you can’t really make a game about paper look more realistic, and some of the ending cutscenes look like they came straight out of a movie, so yeah.

And this game is no short game either: I played for a few hours almost every day and it took me 4 weeks to complete. So definitly buy this if you want something that you want to enjoy for a long time.

The music is great and very rememberable. There definitely has been some thought put into that. The bossfights all have unique music (except for the vellumentals). However, I think the final boss music should’ve been a bit more unique, as it sounded very generic.

In conclusion: definitly give this game a try. You won’t regret it. I would give it a 9,5, but there is sometimes lack of detail and unpolished game aspects, so it gets a 8.8 out of me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Love this game. Out of the 3 later paper marios (sticker star, color splash, origami king) this is definitely my favorite. The world is so much fun to explore and there's always something in the dialogue that makes me laugh. The battle system, while not perfect, has a certain fun to it and the boss battles are unique and interesting. I'm currently on the blue streamer area and I loved the water vellumental fight, and I'm super excited for the rubber band boss. Definitely would recommend, even to an older PM fan. The only thing I wish was different was partners, if we could have a party and have the battles scale in challenge and size along with your party, I think it would give a great sense of progression, which I feel is limited with how the party system works. Otherwise, great game, would recommend. Expand

The only downside I saw (which is why I'm leaving a 9 instead of a solid 10) is simply because the battle mechanics, although innovative, felt a little empty in terms of weapons/Items/Party allies.

The battles are fun and some of the later ones are pretty puzzling. The boss battles in particular are all super diverse, force you to think, and are tons of fun. Some people say the battles are pointless because they give EXP instead of coins, but honestly I never ran from a fight. Battles are fun, so you don't need to attach some arbitrary incentive like EXP to make the player want to fight.

It's a shame review bombers brought the score down. The user score is way lower than it should be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario: The Origami King is a seriously great game. It blows both Color Splash and Sticker Star out of the water. Granted, I liked those games too, but this game is really good. Story is great, especially with deaths and sacrifices that make you realize how emotionally invested you are into it. Level design and the lack of a world map is great. Collectibles, treasures, etc., are a fun addition and add several hours of gameplay into it. Partners are another great addition from the original 3 games, while temporary, they add a layer of depth to the story and setting of Paper Mario and allow you to see there’s specific stories behind each character. Music is another great part of it, I never heard a song I didn’t like. As for the downsides, the battle system is not good. I did not like it. At first it was okay, but as the game went on I just ran. Same can be said for boss battles. They weren’t as bad, but still not great. And there’s no reason to fight. As the game goes on, you have upwards of 50k coins. I had around 65k at one point. The lack of any kind of EXP is disheartening, but the semi-reintroduction of Badges is a step in the right direction. The final boss fight didn’t feel like a boss fight, instead it was another puzzle. The lack of original characters, as well as distinguishing features for characters like age and gender, is another huge downfall to this game. Every character is a Toad, or a Goomba, or a Koopa. Some have different costumes. The Ancient Ones, and Captain T. Ode were the only semi-original characters that were interesting and had some kind of depth. Some nitpicks could be that Luigi doesn’t have as big of a role as i would have liked. Though that can be said for the original 2 and SS/CS as well. Overall, a great game that is dragged down by its battle system and lack of original characters, although still a lot of fun and honestly a heart-wrenching (and heartwarming) story at times. Expand
