I personally loved the story, and I think they took a real chance continuing from fusion, which was a risk in and of itself. I think the finale was one of the most epic things I've experienced in gaming in a long time, and I HOPE that Nintendo gives Mercury Steam the opportunity to continue this series.

A beautiful return for an extraordinary series, Metroid Dread managed to take the best ideas and mechanics from its predecessors and bled it into possibly the definitive Metroid game. Perhaps even the definitive metroidvania. Although you can play similar, longer games from the same genre for much cheaper, none have the vast level of polish found in this game. It's clear from the moment the title screen boots up that the game is a triple A title.

I'm glad this game wasn't released on the DS as the movement feels fluid and precise with the switch's additional controls. I would like an option to use the right stick to aim, but it never felt like it was the games fault when I missed a shot or failed a parry. (although parrying an E.M.M.I was a wonderful feeling) I will note the shinespark seems easier to use than the last entries, however that may just be because I'm more comfortable with it than when I first played zero mission and fusion. However the inclusion of the shine spark makes 100% less plausible to new players and it's never taught in game, which was what made Super Metroid's level design go down in gaming history.

The loading screens for fast traveling are a bit long and broke the flow of gameplay a little bit, however they aren't really noticeable until you go back to 100% the game.

The difficulty is reasonably high, challenging but not hard, so it's not a game you should pick up for small children, but that's part of why it has an age rating. Adam doesn't hold your hand like in fusion, however he does still give you direction. A nice blend and it's always nice to speak to him after beating a challenging boss or escaping an E.M.M.I room.

I also think it's quite linear. Not a necessarily bad thing, and I defiantly spent less time blasting walls wondering where to go than usual, but quite early on you run across a boss called Kraid and with the map so closed off early in the game, you don't have the option to backtrack to upgrade your health as you've probably picked up all the energy tanks you can on your way there. The difficulty of Kraid was defiantly higher than he should have been at that point in the game, however the other bosses felt well balanced and genuinely fun to fight.

The E.M.M.I rooms where a fantastic addition and where I died the most. They are a fun extension of the stealth that made my blood pump in fusion with the SA-X. It trully feels like the perfect next step. I do hope they can expand it again in the next game, however long that takes to make.

The story was exiting yet fairly simple and went a direction I didn't expect. It's not required to play any other games before this to understand the plot, but I'd recommend playing at least Fusion first as to avoid spoilers in case you want to go back and play that game. It doesn't spoil any of the other games much and never mentions the prime games, but Fusion has a heavy impact on the story of Dread. That being said, the old games aren't very accessible at the moment unless you have a Wii U or a GBA, so maybe hold out for a fusion remake or port.

I do however think that locking a collectable behind an amiibo pay wall is unfair. They did the same with Samus returns for 3DS and it meant that I could never truly complete the game.

Metroid has always had a rough time with sales, so I hope that this game will be the one that brings the franchise out from Nintendo's dusty "to do sometime" list and back to being the third pillar of Nintendo. The perfect blend of Mario's platforming and Zelda's story and openness.

The best 2d metroid IMO, had sky high expectations for the game and they were exceeded. It's a combination of the best elements of fusion and super metroid, along with a few new elements(e.g. the EMMIs) that work fantastically.

Combat and mobility system are by far the best on the 2D saga, you'll just need a little bit of practice to adapt to them, but mastering Samus' abilities aren't that hard.
If I can find some sort of "excuses" to say it's imperfect, the only two things I'd say are soundtrack (fitting, but a little generic for such saga and music legacy) and linearity from beggining to end (that's debatable, since between beggining and end you have to get back almost always to %100 it)

Anyway, giving a 10 for those funny kids making review bombing, so I suggest to give back more 10s :D

Hands down one of the best games of 2021 (maybe even the decade), and is a good reminder why the genre is called a METROIDvania! The movement feels snappy and responsive, the combat is intense and challenging, and the stealth parts are appropriately nerve-wracking.

Gameplay aside, this game truly shines in the exploration and its character designs. These are augmented by a mysterious and foreboding narrative that stands well enough on its own if you don’t have much knowledge of Samus’ story thus far. As opposed to many modern Metroidvanias, the game encourages players to find their own path forward through exploration, careful use of the map, and some trial-and-error. Your AI helper will give you general directions to facilitate the story, but beyond that, your path is largely yours to control. Some players who are new to the genre may find this design decision frustrating at times; but it is an important one from both an immersion and story perspective. You are a lone bounty hunter, lost within an uncharted world, and you yourself are being hunted. That level of immersion is something encountered less and less frequently in the modern era of video games, where players are bombarded with waypoints, quest markers, and exposition all elements.

While definitely more accessible than some of its 2D ancestors, Dread is still a difficult game and does not hold your hand. Be prepared to die more than a few times, especially early on in your adventure; however, as you explore the game world, you will uncover abilities that will give you the advantage against the multitude of hostile creatures and machines.

Overall, whether you are a long-time Metroid fan or new to the series, Dread is both a masterpiece, and the quintessential Metroidvania. I cannot recommend this game enough, especially to those who enjoyed games like Ori and the Blind Forest and Hollow Knight, and even Dead Cells to an extent.

Pick up this game, be ready to explore, and step into the boots of the OG video game heroine; you won’t be disappointed!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to explain, but in my opinion, Metroid Dread is just pure fun. Fighting and figuring out bosses is fun, countering attacks is fun, even parts like backtracking to past areas is made fun the way Dread does it. In fact, there's a part where you backtrack to the first area of the game again, and you find it encased in ice. The first time I saw it, I didn't even realize it was the same area. Then it clicked and I began seeing some of the same parts from before, and it was so cool to see that.

Now, I'm not a big Metroid guy. I played and loved Zero Mission, have tried games like Prime and Samus Returns, and even suffered through some Other M. But I think this style of Metroid is my favorite so far. Controls are fun (although I've heard some people not like the inability to use the D-Pad, which I get, but the sticks make aiming a dream for me), the game is smooth as butter (except for some rare stutters during cutscenes), and the item collecting is to die for. When I was trudging through the water area, trying to find my way around while going so slow, it was kind of annoying. But when you get the Gravity Suit and you can freely move through water, it made everything click. Movement is so good in this game. Also, the counter was always kind of a weird introduction, but the way Dread makes it feel when you actually land the counter is such a good time.

The plot is nothing too Oscar-worthy, but it suffices for me. Honestly, I mainly play games for the gameplay, not to be bogged down too heavily by story, but I get if that isn't many others' cup of tea.

Bosses are extremely challenging and fun, but they have tricks that can be worked around. Like, the final boss has this technique where he essentially creates a sun, and the first time I saw that, I was really confused on how to deal with it. Shooting it did nothing, even with Ice Missiles, but then I thought about using my newly-acquired Power Bombs, and it worked. It was such an "a-ha!" moment, and it honestly reminded me greatly of my first time playing Breath of the Wild. The sense of dread (ha-ha) that the EMMIs put into you, at least earlier on, is terrifying. Admittedly, the EMMIs become kind of annoying later on, but it still makes it feel like a puzzle trying to find your way around them.

Honestly, the biggest gripe I had with the game, aside from the few things mentioned previously, are load times. Traveling from area to area takes a comparatively long time. When I first got to the second area, it took upwards of 20 seconds to get from area to area. 20 seconds isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, but you'll be going from area to area pretty often, especially if you want to collect all the items, which I didn't have the guts to do. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's inconvenient.

Other than that, this is such a great game. I get if others don't feel the same about this, but this game might be one of the series' 2D best. It may even rival games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, in my opinion. I will gladly be supporting this game for times to come.

It keeps the core elements from the previous titles, but integrates them with a whole lot of quality of life improvements. The game does a perfect job at controls mapping, any button on the Nintendo switch has its function, Samus' movements and animations are smooth as silk (the slide and melee counter are a joy to use) and it's fast paced even in the stealth sections. The map is huge and i was scared i might lose myself very often, but the perfectly crafted level design manages to set you on the right path even without giving precise instructions.
The artstyle is amazing, i loved the cinematic cutscenes and the animated landscapes in the various sectors: they create a nice sense of immersion, and the sound design helps in doing so. If i had to find a minor flaw, that would be the soundtrack. It's good and creates the right atmosphere, but it doesn't reach the heights of Fusion and Super Metroid.
Last but not least, the boss fights are pure genius. They require you to master your upgrades, they are probably harder than any previous Metroid game and might be tough to deal with for a casual gamer, but they are not punishing (you respawn at the previous room) and they give you different options for beating them. The game also has different animations in case of sequence breaking, glad the developers thought about that. The final boss fight, in particular, will probably go down as one of the most memorable of this series. Story-wise, Dread deeply explores and expands the lore and that's great for a long time fan, but a newcomer won't get lost due to the brief summaries at the beginning, important to recap the story basics. To wrap this up, I could easily see Metroid Dread being in the GOTY conversation. Yes, it's that good.

Do not give any attention to these 0 reviews, these people are simply bad at gaming, they can go play .. Kirby if they want a breeze lol The game is perfectly balanced. There is basically nothing to complain about. The complains about the emmis are invalid as these are just a very small portion of the game, perfectly balanced also here. Game is generally challenging but not unfair, graphics are pretty good (especially for a switch game, still cannot believe that this gem is running at 60fps), controls are pitch-perfect, movement is as fluid as ever, abilities are top-notch. It shows that the devs put a lot of love and thought to this game, exactly as they should for a franchise such as Metroid. Some bosses are kinda tough but as soon as you find their pattern, they are pretty doable. I just wished the game was a little longer, I didnt wanted it to finish basically. The game is easily worth the $60. Do not compare this gem to other metroidvanias, its one of a kind. This is a must have for any proper gamer.

To debunk a couple, this is not a short game, and the controls are some of the most innovative the series has ever seen. I domt know why someone would either lie, or review a game they didn't even play,, but whatever. Besides that, I also see alot of people complaining about the difficulty, and misunderstanding that they only made it hard because of the name dread. Metroid is an old series, and the challenge was part of what made it memorable. Being forced to explore, and finding hidden upgrades, was all part of it. Challenging, massive bosses was part of the atmosphere. Samus is all alone, and her enemies are way stronger,, but her skill carries her through to victory. Even then, Dread is not impossibility hard. I partially amputated my left hand the day before Christmas eve. After 3 surgeries, a nerve graft, and a tendon transfer, 4 of my fingers are still numb, so I can't tell when I'm pressing buttons, my thumb is partially paralyzed, and when it does move, it's only in one direction, and it moves in unison with my pointer finger. Yet even I am able to master this game. The game is challenging, and requires you to use the skills you gain in order to beat the game, but that makes it more immersive and enjoyable, you feel overpowered because of your skill, not overpowered in the sense that you have infinite or automatically restoring health as most modern games do. This game, reminds me of my childhood, of having to master new skills in order to progress in a game, like you would in real life. It's been a long time since I felt a sense of accomplishment after finally mastering a pattern, and beating a boss easily when previously I would die almost instantly. This is how video games used to be, they took practice, skill, and motivation. It says alot for the state of our society, that people can't stand any form of challenge at all, even in a game. Do these people realize that this is nothing compared to how hard old games were? Do they also realize that 3rd graders used to master games like this all the time? I don't understand, boss fights are supposed to be challenging, you aren't supposed to be able to just sloppily blast your way through them without paying attention. Why even have a boss fight if the only difference between it and regular enemies, is a cinematic scene? If all you want to do is watch a massive enemy die, and not actually do it yourself, then just watch people on twitch! Don't ruin video games for the rest of us by demanding they all be 90% cinematic scenes with no challenging gameplay. People used to be embarrassed to complain about the difficulty of a game. I think lots of people could use a bit of shame in their lives. This game deserves to be rated in the high 9's, yet because of all of these pansies who actually want interactive movies, and not video games, this absolute masterpiece is rated lower than it should be. This is one of the best video games of all time, and spoiled brats who can't bother with putting in a miniscule amount of effort, are hurting its legacy. The developers took to heart all the criticism of the past games, and brought the series back to its roots. People complained because they had made metroid easier, and made it more linear and had taken much of the freedom away. People were begging for a game like super metroid for almost 30 years. They finally made the game everyone was begging for, and now a bunch of "longtime metroid fans" (yeah right) complain about everything all the actual fans begged for for 30 years. Mark my words, this game will be played for decades to come, while the stupid, interactive movie games these naysayers love so much, will be totally forgotten. If you have a competitive nature, or just want to know what video games used to feel like, but with modern polish, HD graphics, and a smooth 60 fps, give this game a try. You won't be disappointed. And if you don't like freedom, getting better, or accomplishing anything, and would rather watch a movie while you hold a controller and push a button every now and then, just do everyone a favor, get Netflix or twitch, and stop complaining that video games are too much like video games, and not enough like movies. What a bunch of whiney brats. Peace y'all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite game of all time was Super Metroid. Now it is tied with Metroid Dread. The only Metroid I haven't completed is the original on NES. I prefer the 2d games over prime as well. The movement in this game is so buttery smooth and rewarding. I really liked the new mechanics in Samus returns although the walk up-stop-counter was kinda heavy in that game. It felt a little slow movement wise too. Dread came through and perfected that. I wouldn't mind it being a little longer in-between power ups. Especially when you hit like 75% of the game and just go on an upgrade spree. I completely understand the gripes that other people give this game with the EMMI and other aspects of difficulty. To me though it gave the game more depth than just monsters to fight. You are also being hunted by the research robots that the federation deployed. I love the transitions to everything being x parasite infested and the changing environments. I am not a huge fan of a lot of cut scenes and story being forced down my throat but this game had some A1 cut scenes that just added to the bada$$ persona that is Samus. Especially that first boss kill shot. Gets me every time. I have high hopes for Metroid going forward and my favorite part of the game, big spoiler.....THE LAST METROID IS SAMUS, THE GALAXY WILL NEVER BE AT PEACE! Love this game and whenever I start it up it's so hard to put down.PS as a Metroid fiend I didn't find it as difficult as some say. Could be because I am playing on a Monitor and not a TV so it's basically no input delay. Thank you Nintendo and Mercury Steam for giving us this absolute delight! Expand

Mercury Steam and Yoshio Sakamoto absolutely nailed this entry in the main Metroid series.

The story is lightly sprinkled on with very compelling cutscenes and (very) limited but impactful dialogue. The persistent and annoying Navigation rooms from Fusion have returned, but not in the same way. They are much fewer and far between, and "Adam" does not give you explicit orders like last time. instead of having the next hour of gameplay explained to you, the rooms just give you general advice and direction.

The movement in Dread is smoothed even further from the engine for Samus Returns on the 3DS. Not only does Samus control like a dream, but she also has a few new, original abilities in this entry that make traversal and back-tracking much more interesting.

Speaking of back-tracking, Dread does a wonderful job of providing a shortcut at the exact moment that you feel like you need it in order to return to previously traversed areas. Not only this, but they designed progression based on a looping route throughout each area of the game. You may find a convenient shortcut to backtrack for a missed Energy Tank and find that they put a boss with an upgrade in the path you were planning on backtracking to begin with. Environments are sometimes entirely changed on subsequent trips through an earlier area. Mercury Steam really went all out on ensuring that revisiting areas you've been to already is a pleasant experience.

The upgrades hidden throughout the game that you might search out if you're attempting to 100% Dread all vary in how obtuse they can be to obtain. Some are as simple as laying a bomb and claiming it, while others require VERY precise morph ball or speed booster tricks that the game doesn't teach you.

But the greatest thing of all that Dread does is something that Every Metroid game does. It teaches you how to play and sharpens your control of Samus as you play. Just like Zero Mission or Super Metroid, nothing can replace that feeling of finally solving the super difficult Speed Booster puzzle for the final Energy Tank.

Likewise, the bosses in Dread are exceptionally brutal on the first run. BUT they all teach you how to beat them. On my first attempt at each major boss in the game, I got the feeling that they seemed almost impossible. Some of their attacks SEEM unavoidable, and their attacks are PUNISHING. But each time you attempt the same boss, you'll notice one more thing that will help you get further, and further, until suddenly you can completely style on the boss, avoid all it's attacks, and feel like a total badass. This game really demands that you out-play the bosses in order to beat them. Sometimes this translates to a cookie-cutter experience, but here, it ends up being very satisfying in execution. You can tell that Mercury Steam took notes from other popular Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight and Ori, so as not to be behind-the-curve on difficulty.

The E.M.M.I. seem to be the most controversial part of this game, when looking at other reviews. They are only scary the first couple of times you have to run from them. Eventually you will see them for what they are -- a nuisance. However, I still believe they add to the experience. Their existence bars you from exploring large chunks of each area at leisure. Once you find a way to destroy each of them, the expanse of rooms they were patrolling open up to reveal a lot of shortcuts and items.

On your first playthrough, running into an EMMI seems like instant death. And this is a complaint being echoed by a lot of voices on Metacritic. But what is often not mentioned alongside this is that Dread has VERY forgiving checkpoints--if you're caught by an EMMI and die, it just puts you outside the EMMI zone door you entered through. Unlike past Metroid games, dying does not return you all the way to your last save point. Save points are basically there for when you quit the game and load it back up. The same goes for bosses. Losing to a boss doesn't require you to slog all the way back from a save room. Dying just puts you right outside their room so you can try, try again.

I also must address negative reviews I've seen about the design of the game:

This game looks phenomenal and anyone saying the graphics are bad is a troll or is blind. This is one of the most beautiful Switch games to date and has an immense amount of detail and story-through-subtext, just as you'd expect from a Metroid game.

My only real complaint about this game is that the EMMI aren't scary enough and I wish I could adjust the controls. The default controls aren't terrible, but nobody was ever hurt by having the option.

EDIT: The EMMI's can be somewhat reliably countered with practice. Also, this game has sequence breaking. I'm saying this because a lot of the negative reviews get these two things wrong.

While playing Metroid Fusion, I often wondered why it was so linear compared to Super Metroid. We see that in Metroid Dread, however, there is an intended, implied route, but it can be broken time and time again.

Mercury Steam and Nintendo have also done a good job balancing the difficulty of this game, with constant checkpoints and rewarding boss fights. Metroid Dread is a great game for Metroid veterans who try to speedrun the game and for first time Metroidvania players, who want to know what the genre is all about.

It takes surprising elements philosophically from super metroid and fusion; a great combination of the two, with an atmosphere that is effective. Samus controls like a dream, she is fluid and animated; this really shows her demeanor and her best representation to date. The level design is impeccable; they have found a way to pace the game effectively without being handholdy (super metroid) and also having objective(fusion); you are never really in one area for two long. The E.M.M.Is don't drag the game down; the stealth is intense; it's cat and mouse and so you're always on the run never losing momentum; and while they can be frustrating at time; it never felt like the game designed them cheaply but rather it's your fault. The Boss battles are some if the best in the genre and in action games and are sequential in nature thus letting you rely on observation and precision while using all your abilities (up to that point) to beat them. I see some people complain about the QTE segments of the game, saying it's cheap; I see it as a reward for understanding the boss and figuring them out; this is a sign of you beating then quicker. The music might not be memorable but they are effective and complement the atmosphere; it amplifies it. The graphics while has blemishes in some of the texture, as a whole; really does make the game atmospheric and eerie, it's lighting and color use makes for vibrancy in this eerie isolated world. Going with 3D instead of 2D Sprite was the right choice as it helps articulate some cinematic points in the game; I personally feel the graphics are underappreciated because the game is rather fast paced you don't get to acknowledge the background and how varied the areas are; they are refreshing and very different from each other. The game runs at a smooth 60fps which just makes samus animation all the more fluid and natural. Some of the cutscences like when you transport yourself are in 30fps but since they don't affect gameplay; they are a none issue and most cinematic are in-game engine so you're still in that 60fps. The story is not in your face; and each time it's on display it's impactful - this is especially for metroid fans who have followed the story throughly. I am not the biggest metroid person when it comes to the lore but I found it interesting. Story is the least of my problem in games so the fact it's not in my face and when it comes; it's quick, concise and action packed is good for me as I like to get back into what games do best; gameplay. This is honestly a triumph for not just mercury steam who showed that Nintendo was right to trust them, and not to the genre - which shouldn't be seen as just an indie genre but the fans who have waited so long; it was well worth it on all front. This game IS NOT like Samus Returns, where if you went from one area to the other, that meant that area you already visited was done for, no use of going back there unless you want to 100%. Metroid Dread basically requires you to go to every location and back, which I think is great since it gives you much of an incentive to 100% the game.

The story is fantastic. It takes what happens from Fusion and creates its own, very interesting story. It is recommended to playthrough the old Metroid games to get an understanding of the basic lore, but this is still a great game for newcomers. There is a ton of variety in the Boss Fights and I'm glad that every EMMI, and most bosses have unique styles so none of the battles are boring or bland at all.

This is a fantastic game. I definitely recommend it to those who have not played a metroid game or a metroidvania. You will have a great time.

This is combined with the excellent animations which makes everything you do feel dynamic and fluid. On top of that, all of the abilities that you unlock all lead to a great powerful feeling of progression and all her abilities can be used on the press of a button swiftly.

The story is good. Metroid is not known for its stories told within game, and Metroid Dread does not stray from this much. The gameplay and the environment are far more important to the game, however its story is far from disappointing and has given a boatload of information for the lore that the community has been wanting for decades. It definitely scratches the itch I've been wanting for Metroid lore without ruining any level of mystery. That said this is not a game for you if you only care about the lore or story, as it is not focussing on that.

The graphics are very good. I was surprised by how good they were; I recall during the initial trailers for Metroid Dread I was concerned that the graphics looked a little crusty, but when actually playing it I was amazed by how gorgeous the environments were. There are some effects here and there which do look a little outdated simply due to being on the Switch, but overall the game still looks astounding. It's hard to believe this game runs so consistently on the basic Switch model.

The EMMI encounters are tense without making you panic and sufficiently hit that titular feeling of 'dread', but every time I died in the entire game I always felt it was fair. This game is one of the most difficult Metroid games to have come out, but every time I took damage or was outright killed I always knew it was my fault and knew how to improve. Additionally the checkpointing system and savepoints are very generous so it is rare that you will ever lose progress on death. That said, this isn't the hardest Metroidvania by any stretch of the imagination - every boss I encountered I was able to defeat within 10 tries.

The weakest aspect of this game, to me, is the soundtrack. It is not bad, hence I am still giving this game a commending score of 10/10 as I believe this is a modern masterpiece. However, it focuses heavily on just being atmospheric rather than being melodic. This is not a negative thing, it is just weak.

I have played many Metroidvanias. One of my favourite games of all time is Symphony of the Night. Even so, it is very rare for me to find simply jumping about and doing basic traversal fun. But in Metroid Dread, every single action I was doing felt fluid, responsive, and just fun. The Metroidvania genre as a whole more or less uses backtracking as a foundation, and Metroid Dread has, for me, removed the annoyance that sometimes comes with backtracking entirely, simply due to how fun the gameplay is. It's hard to overstate that and it's not something I expected going into the game. Obviously everyone will respond to the gameplay changes differently - veteran Metroid players will especially need to get used to the way they changed walljumping - but for me I find it hard to think of many ways this game could be improved to be a more enjoyable experience, besides giving us more. And if that's not a sign of a great game, I don't know what is.

One last thing to add, however. Though I think this is a masterpiece, I would *not* recommend this to absolutely everyone. It is an ideal Metroidvania, however it is still a Metroidvania. It therefore requires precise jumping, aiming, and will involve a lot of cryptic secrets and backtracking. It is common to be lost and not know what to do, and it is common to have to go over the same areas over and over again. This is not a bad thing for me, but it's worth considering this is still a Metroidvania and so is not a game as universally recommendable as, for example, Mario Oddyssey. Still, it is the best Metroid so far in my opinion, so I would recommend anyone to try it regardless.

Absolutley amazing game. It plays super fluently, looks amazing, has an amazing story and atmosphere. Best metroid game in the series. Do think the pacing of the last part of the game was a bit to fast, but thats only a small point and even so its still a 10 for me. Recommended!

The E.M.M.I were my biggest worry but they ended up being a lovely addition that provided much needed fearful and tense situations. They also don’t overstay their welcome and are used in new ways each time you encounter them. My only issue is that towards the end of the game it becomes a little more Metroid Fusion-esque and often bottlenecks you into where you need to go instead of discovering stuff organically but this is a minor blemish on an otherwise incredible game. The story was also very intriguing and has plenty of twists and turns. Definitely don’t skip this one, even if you’re new to the franchise, it’s worth your time. Expand

The best Metroid experience that's been released since Super Metroid. The controls and abilities have been polished incredibly well. Bosses are challenging and fun, and this is the first Metroid game to integrate a compelling story without it ever slowing down gameplay. Absolutely worth playing if you like Metroid games, as this is the best one that's come out in over 25 years.

This game does not hold your hand, you have to USE your BRAIN.

It allows you to feel the reward of learning the facts and mechanics and feeling like you are becoming a better player. It nails the awesome feel of the Metroid games and you have explore to figure out where to go. Once you realize that you have to shoot walls to reveal hidden paths it becomes much more straight forward on where to go. There are a few tough areas to figure out, but that is the fun.

Game is absolutely amazing, hands down the best game since Metroid Prime series. Super Metroid is the only other game that competes with this title.

if you are a cry baby who needs their hands held you wont like this game, but if you enjoy being challenged and understand what a Metroid game IS. You will love this game and appreciate what the developers were doing.

I applaud the developers for having the courage to produce a game as finely crafted as this, with the difficulty. Crybabies can cry and gamers can game. Peace out.

The flow of movement. The Sequence Breaking, and just being able to have fun with the Shine Spark.

I find the melee counter a vast improvement over Samus Returns because this time not every enemy can be countered. your abilities n can handle a greater range of foes earlier on so that stopping/waiting/countering is by no means the most efficient tactic for everything like the previous title. Heck for a number of the enemies they took out the waiting part and that was a hug plus in and of itself.

Bosses felt like they had a fair learning curve, seeming difficult at first but every boss is animated so that each attack has a distinctive tell that lets you know where and when to move, attack, or counter. The only thing I,'d want to add to this game is a Prime Style logbook to give you more concrete lore on the world but that's just me and has no bearing on the gameplay.

I was afraid this game would fail because of the mixed opinions of Samus Returns and the clear reuse of mechanics and assets but this title FAR exceeded my expectations.

The sound design is also REALLY good. I advice you to use either headphones or surround sound system when playing. OST isn't as memorable as in other games in the series but it still reinforces the atmosphere.

Overall I the game was just joy to play from start to finish. I don't have that much time for gaming these days so I'll usually complete a game once and then move to the next game. But this time around second playthrough may be needed. Dread is so freaking good!

The movement is impeccable, the art style is gorgeous and the sense of progression really great. This is my first Metroid game and I have to say, I am enjoying it so much. The game is a bit difficult for a newcomer to the series but I getting the hang of it. Right now I am hooked and I can't wait to play more. I love the E.M.M.I. rooms and encounters. It works really well in this game. I have just beat the Chozo Warrior robot (the third boss) so I will update my review depending on what my thoughts are at the end of the game.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
