I really loved Animal Crossing New Leaf and I thought this game would introduce new things, but I was wrong. And they really downgraded on the fun factor. No new personality types, dead villagers who only mention the HHA score and fossils. They might as well all be the same personality type. Graphics aren't everything and this game is given way too much credit for what it is. Boring.

A simple groundwork of starting off on a isolated paradise island; You are tasked by Tom Nook to help develop your island to a livable home that people will want to come visit and live at. Finding all sorts of villagers along the way to come move to your island. There is almost 400 different villagers you can find that range in personalities and looks. Try to be nice to the non kawaii ones. They have feelings too. Besides Shari.
A game that never really "ends" I was debating on when to write a review but I have achieved a 5 Star Rating Island and now have began to try and catalog all items in the game. There have been a couple updates and each one adds in something new to experience. This game is a enjoyable work of art that can easily be viewed as a stress relief. It also holds a special place for me as me and my girlfriend like to play it together and hold little special dates when we have the time.
    Well done Nintendo.

I will say, I love animal crossing. I've been playing since the gamecube version and have always loved the charm of having a little town you can escape to. The anthropomorphic animals that become your friends is always welcome in my home and New Horizons delivers on the original concept better than ever before. I've heard critics call this iteration the "Breath of the Wild" of Animal Crossing. I can agree. Never before has there been this much customizability and control of your village. Let me start with some of the positives. First, let me talk about some quality of life improvements that aren't commonly talked about. Your villagers never leave in this game unless you prompt them to leave. This is amazing. Especially from the perspective of someone who likes to play the markets. There is an intrinsic value placed on certain villagers depending on how in-demand they are. In previous games, they would move out unprompted and there was nothing you could do to get them back short of buying their respective amiibo cards. Next, the crafting system is just wonderful and plays well in the new improved atmosphere of New Horizons. It adds a bit of whimsy and character to a series already chock full of the stuff. Now some negatives. As people can see by the review score, you're locked into one island per switch. Which isn't that crazy considering that has been the take of Animal Crossing historically. The biggest thing that knocks it down from being a perfect game for me is the fact that the content wasn't all there upon release. Animal crossing requires long-term dedication for hours a day (within the first few months of this game I have over 300+ hours on my save) and the game can start to feel a little stale by the time a new content update is released. While the charm and whimsy certainly make-up for this fact. There's too many triple-A releases coming out to justify the enormous dedication it takes to do everything you want in this game. All-in-all, it's an excellent experience and if you own a switch, this is a must-have. Expand

Our island rep has lost interest in playing, so that leaves me with many hundreds of thousands of bells and Nook Miles with nothing to do but try to generate more and more to no end.
I loved the time I spent with this game. Now realizing that after all this time I spent, everything I’ve earned and unlocked along the way was truly for nothing. And it makes me angry. At this point it would be unfathomable to delete everyone’s save data and start over. I’ve come so far and done so much. I’ve got some rare items, crossbred many colours of flowers, unlocked just about every item currently available in Nooks Shop...and now here I am. Faced with a decision I shouldn’t have to make. Do I delete all this work and start over...or do I just quit?
Nintendo has shown great disrespect to its customers with their one island decision. It may be the shadiest thing I’ve ever fallen for in terms of video games. I can’t believe they ruined it with this decision. I haven’t enjoyed a game this much in YEARS but...yeah they had to find a way to absolutely kill it for some reason.
Very disturbing decision by Nintendo and hopefully not a sign of things to come. It’s sad. It really is. Was it greed that prompted this decision? Idk, do they actually think people the world over would buy a second Switch so they could have their own island? That’s just not in cards for many people. Could I? Yeah probably, but that wouldn’t be very financially responsible for someone who has an actual life to live and maintain. What they’ve done here is within their rights, but I don’t understand it, and there’s no way around it. They got my money I guess and that’s good enough for them. How could you Nintendo?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Recently, we purchased Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a reward for my son, who had saved up half of the cost with his allowance. He was excited to play the game, as my wife and I had played every previous version and had told him how much fun it was. We were all looking forward to playing the game and enjoying watching the island build up and grow. When the day arrived, he was the first to log in and play. My wife and I then created characters and started farming and building our homes. Then, the first major 'milestone' arrived. He started working on the quest, then went out for the day. I decided to log in to my account and help out with his quest. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't. Essentially, I was not the 'main' character, and not allowed to progress the main story line. I was disappointed, to say the least. Although I had put quite a number of hours into the game already and built up my home and character, and didn't want to lose that... I was consoled by the idea that I could always start another island and experience the main storyline that way. After all, the Switch has multiple user accounts, right? Wrong. Apparently I have to buy another game copy AND console if I want to experience the game I paid for in full. Or delete my son's island and start over, which I'm not about to do. This is an incredibly poor design choice on Nintendo’s part. Not allowing separate islands? Or allowing multiple players in a *multiplayer game* to have full access to the game features? Ridiculous. This may be the last Nintendo console I allow in my household. I will certainly be scrutinizing their software with independent reviewers very closely before allowing any future purchases in our household. Expand

I mean, when I went to go get my copy of this game, I waited in line for at least half an hour. But guess what? It was 110% worth it! I would have waited 2 hours in line if that meant I could wrap my hands around this mysterious wonder! It is such a peaceful, violence free, fantastic game that is great for anyone of any age. Today, I’m going to tell you how much of a great game Animal Crossing: New Horizons is. Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

First, you need to know what Animal Crossing: New Horizons is all about. It starts off with you, buying the Deserted Island Getaway Package. You are dropped off at a completely deserted island along with a few other random villagers. What I mean by villagers is talking animals which each have completely different personalities! For example, Jitters, the green duck who can never get enough exercise. He even dreams about running thousands of miles a day without stopping. Or Bubbles, the hippo always wearing dresses who can never stop talking about becoming a pop star. The island starts out covered in weeds and is swarming with bugs. All you and your fellow islanders have are tents with radios but as you progress, your island does too. You and other villagers begin to live in houses which you can customize to the very last piece of furniture. A museum is forged which displays fossils, art, fish and bugs that you gather. A convenience store is built where you can sell almost anything for some extra cash. The tailor shop is made which sells the finest of clothing. A town hall is installed which provides all necessary help and information to make an island that suits you! Every time I show my mom this game, she falls asleep because of the beautiful songs that the birds sing and the image of a tree’s leaves getting rustled by the gusting wind, which leads me to my next point. The audio is so realistic and the visuals are calming, colorful and just a pleasure to glance at. This game is set with real time so when it’s dark out in real life, the shooting stars rain from the dark night sky in this never ending story. Plus, you will never get bored! There are always things to do like do favors for villagers, make some paths or even expand your house! The amount of lively energy that was poured into this amazing creation is incredible! Islanders now send you mail, do yoga in front of the town hall, talk to each other about starting bands and even doing daily activities like fishing. Even for people who don’t like video games, you should give this beautiful piece of art a shot! I guarantee you will enjoy every last minute of it! Animal Crossing: New Horizons is truly a magical experience and almost whimsical.

As someone who played New Leaf for the 3DS, the differences between the games are night and day. Where New Horizons took 2 steps forward it also takes 5 steps back when it comes to features and additions.
200 hours in, the new features (outdoor decor, terraforming, DIY’s) fail to make up for the countless features from previous games that don’t show up. Some missing features are furniture (1,764 in NL vs 804 in NH, less than half), the HHA Showcase, island mini games, some holidays (April Fools and Earth Day so far), Nintendo themed fortune cookie items, gyroids, the Cafe, fortune telling, and the dream suite are the most notable absences in the game. Features aside, many fan-favorite characters don’t make a return in the game: Kapp’n, the Resetti Brothers, Pete, Pelly, Phyllis, Tortimer, Digby, and Gracie Grace are ALL absent from the game.
This is not to say these characters and features won’t show up in one of many planned procedural updates, but the absence of all these features and characters becomes evident once the player accomplished many of the goals set by both the game and themselves. There isn’t much to do in the game after you achieve your 5-Star island. No more shop upgrades to look forward to for the time being, no more shops to open up, no more islands to visit, no mini games to play with your friends, no small distractions that were abundantly present in previous games.
The lack of content in Animal Crossing New Horizons and the presence of procedural updates is a sign of Nintendo’s complacency within the larger game industry. Halo MCC faced a similar lack of content compared to previous games when many of the game modes present in previous entries were unavailable on the release date. An entire year after the release of the game, all of the previous features have been added in. I fear this will be the fate of New Horizons. Whether for their own profit or to stave off time-travelers, Nintendo has chosen to give fans an IV-drip of new content into the game. It took over 2 months for diving to make a return to the game, a feature that was available in New Leaf upon release.
There has also been a noticeable decline in the quality of the features that do return. Characters like Isabelle have been relegated to repeating the same lines of dialogue every time you boot up the game: the same line about her missing sock or the comedian she watched on TV or one of the five other speech options she cycles through every week. Nook’s Cranny has only one upgrade as of July 2020, whereas NL had 4 upon release.
New Horizons does give players a much higher level of customizability than any previous game. Although the furniture options are severely limited, players can reshape the majority of the island to whatever they desire, they can place villager homes in any location they wish, and they can decorate areas outside of the player’s home. Creating custom clothing is given more versatility with more clothes types and now player designs are no longer pixelated, but rounded out when placed onto clothing items. Previously immovable objects such as rocks can be broken to be spawned in a more desirable area. The majority of fun from the game will come from the goals the player sets for themselves when playing the game, which is an issue if you struggle creatively. If you weren’t a super creative person, in previous games there were goals that could keep you playing day after day: additional store upgrades, building new stores, and playing off the more expensive debts for your larger house in NL. Even if you do enjoy being creative with your island, once you’ve achieved your 5-Star island, there isn’t anything major for you to work towards: no upgrades, no stores, and no upgrades for the small side rooms in your house.

Small features you would expect to be in any game are also missing. No options menu to change things like music volume, no ability to donate to other people’s museums, no giving fish or bugs to other players, and most egregiously, no way to have multiple islands on the same console. If you have a spouse or family member who also wants to start their own island, they can’t just hop on another profile, they can’t even just buy bother copy of the game, they have to buy an entirely new switch and another copy of the game. This makes the cost of having two save files in one household go up to at least US$280. In past games, all you had to do was either buy a new memory card on the GameCube or buy another copy of the game to have another village. Many other reviewers talk about this issue with the game and there really is no reason other than greed for Nintendo to make this change from previous games.

It feels like Animal Crossing New Horizons knew exactly what new features to bring to the game to please fans, but in bringing in the amazing new features, Nintendo failed to bring in so many of the fun, memorable, and important features and characters from the previous games.

Well, if about the game - live, trade, build, fish, travel, catch bugs, pay a loan, pay a loan, pay a loan, rebuild the island. And you will find that you have only 3 stars out of 5.

I really love this game, but it is impossible to play online with friends. To get to the island of another player is only 1 case out of 100. And a constant error is not only me - my friends also can not get to the islands of each other. We all tried to set up our routers and read tips from nintendo (which are completely useless). The online game doesn't really work.

However, I have reached a point where I'd love to have more islands to make more themed towns. I'm too attached to my first island to just kick all my villagers off and go searching for all penguins to make an ice themed island. But I can't use my creativity on more than just one island because there is only one island per Switch! I sincerely hope Nintendo patches the game so you can have at least up to 8 Islands on the console to match the number of accounts. Other games function in this manner where each account has a separate save file, why can't Animal Crossing?

The ability to customize your island is so cool and it gives your island a sense of uniqueness. There is a lot more customization that you were only able to dream about in the previous games....
However, what forces me to give this game a 5/10 is the fact that it is not finished. Right now, we are at a stand still in the game. If you have ran out of ideas on how to decorate the island, then there is nothing else for you to do. There is no additional store upgrades, no Roost, Dream Suite, or anything else that we use to have in previous games. We are essentially stuck in the early phases of the game until Nintendo decides to give us an update.
Also, the use of updates is a cop out for Nintendo to sell us a full priced game that is NOT FINISHED. There is also very limited villager interactions as well. In pocket camp, the villagers actually use the furniture that you have set up. They actually use the half pipe, Ferris wheel, etc, where as all they do is sit down on the chairs or benches in ACNH. That is very frustrating when I have spent days decorating a carnival, a wedding venue, a dinner, and a library and they don't even use them.
This game can be fun, however it is not finished. It is different from the animal crossing that I have known and loved because it has turned into more of a decorating game. Especially since there are currently no further advances in the game (store upgrades/ additional stores), so you pretty much reach the "end" like you would when you have played after 5 years and have nothing else to do. I really want to love this game, but playing it makes me really want to just pull out my 3DS and play Wild World or New Leaf.
I say wait a few years to purchase until Nintendo gets it's stuff together and actually finish the game.

I'm surprised how low people rate this game. I've put in more than 200 hours and had a great time playing. This has been the perfect game for the lockdown in 2020. Also playing with another person on the same console same island makes it even more fun. If you put in 100+ hours in a game and had fun, that's at least a 9 out of 10 in my book. The value is incredible.

Me and my wife spent ~140h on this game, and we like to share the same island so show/visit each other houses, give items, etc..

I think this game really lacks coop/multiplayer. So many times I wanted to play with someone and we end up facing each other doing emotes/reactions but chatting on discord/whatsapp.

Since the game managed to get me hooked for a couple months and made me talk about it with friends and wife, I think it deserves an 8.

It’s an easy game to get lost in, I’ll give it that, but after the first few tasks of the game when you are finally given free roam, it’s boring. Absolutely nothing compared to the refreshing experience that was New Leaf.

It may appeal to some, but personally, filling an island with objects that are unusable to achieve a 5 star rating is not what I expected from an Animal Crossing game. Dialogue with the characters on your island is short and lifeless. It’s tedious to get actual tasks out of them. Terraforming seems fun to begin with, but soon becomes a chore when trying to create the ‘perfect’ island. Furniture cannot be interacted with, so once something is placed, that’s the end of the fun. Filling the museum is enjoyable, but that’s the most action the game has. You’re basically turning your island into a museum anyway.

Travelling to randomly generated islands feels repetitive, and the only redeeming quality of them is finding a rare bug or a cute villager. I expected something amazing compared to New Leaf (which is my favourite Animal Crossing game), but New Horizons fell short.

It’s truly only worth the money if world-building appeals to you. It’s a relaxing experience, but I expected more actual gameplay. I’m disappointed to say the least. It’s as lifeless as Amiibo Festival.

Only having one island per console no matter how many copies are purchased is outrageous. It robs players of the full experience of the game as only one player has the full experience. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is meant to allow players to create and design their own islands but this is not possible with only one save file. This just proves how greedy Nintendo is. It would be reasonable if it was an island per copy but it’s a cheap money tactic that Nintendo has included to rob fans of the game. No other game has this problem. If you want to play Super Mario Odyssey then you have your own save file for each account but Nintendo understands that Animal Crossing is a huge nostalgia game so they took advantage of it to try get more money. Just great nintendo now i cant even play the game i got on my birthday properly. I think this should be heavily more criticized so people know before they buy. i demand an update to fix this poor design choice.

The general gameplay loop is slowly upgrading your island, catching creatures to submit to Blathers, visiting new smaller islands, and that’s where it about ends. I never have a great motivation to make my island look nice or to do anything for its inhabitants due to them often feeling robotic or one note caricatures such as this guy is strong, this girl is moody, and that’s their whole personality. It’s worthy to note that your islanders personality rarely play a part in your daily gameplay, the only islanders you interact with frequently (The shoo vendors) have set in stone personalities that don’t factor into anything. So all in all it makes villagers just feel like side attractions/decorations instead of a motivator to continue upgrading your island for you and its inhabitants. To make your island look great you need tons of bells, which turnips become the primary way to farm them later on, which I dislike since they feel so disconnected to actual gameplay. In terms of the other parts of the loop, catching creatures is admittedly tedious but rewarding so I don’t have much to say on that note. But one thing I think everyone can agree on is the major design oversights that honestly I don’t have any idea how they got past play-testing. Crafting one object at a time, a long drawn out arriving cutscene that despawns any creatures near you whenever someone arrives, and more just take a noticeable toll on my enjoyment due to bow frankly annoying they are in this type of game. This isn’t to say that there’s nothing good about this game, the amount of things you can collect, your customizability, multiplayer, and general aesthetic are all things to take into account. The character designs are adorable, and nothing about the game aside from those oversights really frustrates me, but it’s just not my cup of tea. If you’re into those games where you can collect tons of stuff, and are a fan of its slow pace and relaxed nature, I’d say it’s for you. My final rating is a 6/10 which in my terms is a game worth playing if it suits you well.

The multi-player experience is really bad. If you are not first player, you can't advance the story. This would probably be a fun game if you played alone, but my my experience as player 2 was very disappointing.

There is no point play as secondary player in Animal.Crossing : New Horizon.
The secondary player is not able to help in progressing the island project and mission.
It is very disappointing for a $60 game that only allow 1 player to have the full gaming experience

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
