People are giving this a zero just because they are mad that they can't have more than one island! This game is one of the best switch games ever made. If the people weren't so passionate about this game..they wouldn't be on here giving it a zero...but a zero is rediculous!!

I'm generously giving this a 5/10, because the gameplay is full of flaws and ages terribly.

This title's multiplayer "feature" is complete and utter garbage. First off, every single time a new player joins, a lengthy cut-scene (about 40 seconds) will display to EVERYONE on the island. Also, no one is allowed to use Nookphones or have a dialog while a new player tries to connect. Then,
I'm generously giving this a 5/10, because the gameplay is full of flaws and ages terribly.

This title's multiplayer "feature" is complete and utter garbage. First off, every single time a new player joins, a lengthy cut-scene (about 40 seconds) will display to EVERYONE on the island. Also, no one is allowed to use Nookphones or have a dialog while a new player tries to connect. Then, comes the biggest issue: the game DOES NOT SAVE while another person is visiting your island. Imagine you've been playing with your friends for one hour or so, and suddenly your connection fails (even a second is enough). Every player will be disconnected and ALL the progress made by EVERYONE in the last hour will be COMPLETELY ERASED Even the host will lose all the progress. The game only saves at two moments, when in multiplayer: when a player leaves or when someone arrives on your island.

Then, there are the crafting mechanics. Poorly thought and limited, you cannot craft more than a single item at once. If someone needs 15 fish bait, the player will need to craft fish bait 15 times, go through the lengthy dialogues 15 times and endure the cut-scene 15 times. This issue is somewhat fixable by having a Turbo controller.

What can't be fixed is the lack of recipes. I've only got one recipe a day by opening the bottles that come ashore, and a random villager will also gift you a random recipe once a day. I have got duplicates on many occasions. And that's about it for obtaining new recipes. You'll need a thousand years to complete the recipe list.

This game has a ton of new fishes and different species. But to get them all for your museum, you'll need to travel using Nook Miles Tickets. While those aren't particularly expensive, there's only about 1% of chance of visiting an island with different fish or bugs. I'm 70 hour into the game and NEVER managed to travel to an interesting island. Most of the times, players'll get sent into a small island that has the exact same resources as the home island. So, if you think exploration is a forte in this game, rethink.

Then comes the arbitrary limitations: players are not allowed to send more than two letters a day, cannot purchase or view custom designs when someone is visiting, cannot terraform when online, trading or giving fish or bugs in any way is not possible. Redd will only sell a single piece of art a week (original or false). Terraforming is full of limitations, such as not building waterfalls in a diagonal or leveling the edges of an island.

Building mechanics are mediocre. The house interior is very customizable, and player designs are very well used in the game. But the lack of crafting recipes and the Nook store's 4 itens a day limitation will cripple your creativity. There are nearly no counters or tables to furniture the house.

Getting attached to villagers is also not recommended, as they'll randomly move away, even if you talk to them everyday and create friendship bonds, the'll eventually leave you. I like to think that each villager is a tickling bomb, when their internal timers reach zero, they'll vanish from my island and a new random'll take up their space . There's also no getting around to this.

So, the good things: the graphics are really cute, well made and unique. The music is also very good, the new mechanics (although sloppy and poorly thought) are a welcome addition to the series. There has been some good quality of life improvements, such as inventory space and item catalogues. But all in all, the problems of this game overcome the improvements. And they have added interesting new content via updates, although nothing was game-changing.

I can only recommend this to VERY enthusiast newcomers into the series that have never played sandbox videogames before, or to die-hard Animal Crossing fans that are willing to swallow its many problems while paying 60 dollars for a clearly unfinished game that lacks a lot of polishing. Even though, a warning for those people: like Pokémon, this game has NO CLOUD SAVING. If something happens to your console or the save data gets corrupted somehow, your island is done for. Users cannot manually backup the save, because it's stored inside the console (not on the gaming card, not on the SD Card memory).

I have played this for about 70 hours, but the frustration with the lack of polish and overall unfinished or pre-test project feeling this game has is too much for me to keep on playing. I now seriously consider selling the cartridge to get something else. This game is nowhere as polished as Breath of the Wild, and its quality is substandard for a console-seller title. A lot of people will hop into ACNH because of the hype and, like me, will be frustrated when they realize this game ages like milk.

The couch co-op mode is terrible too. As a second player all of your items get directly sent to the "town lost and found" and anyone can take it out of the box, except for you, WHO COLLECTED IT. This would make sense if it was a 50 dollar consol or something that each person in our family could have but to spend 300 BUCKS to fully play a game on your own is ridiculous. So basically, i cant even play the game, i cant help move out island in the right direction, and i cant play an important role as a second player. And this is all on a 60 dollar game that my dad bought. Glad ONE person gets to enjoy it. Expand

I swear fixing the problem with only 1 island would be so easy... Every other game has different users have different save files! Did Nintendo expect a family to have multiple switches?!?! They thought it would be some cute little addition to the game for siblings to play on the same island. But that can’t be further from the truth. It’s like a full war, especially how resources can only be collected ONCE per day. Now, I agree that’s perfectly balanced and makes sense, but not when there’s siblings fighting over who gets the rocks or fruit or fossils. This whole thing, wouldn’t even be the worst thing ever, if everyone had the power of the resident representative! Like, my sister managed to log on first, and she barely even plays! But she plays enough that she won’t let me take over her account. So if I want to move a building, make a bridge, etc, I have to drop money, save, go on her account, build the thing, save, then go back on my account. It’s ridiculous! Why can’t the other players make bridges inclines layout changes etc. Not to mention only the main user can do the tasks to try to get K.K. on the island. Also the main user gets certain recipes that other users can not get unless they find it in a ballon gift thing. Besides the terrible terrible design, I like this game a lot and I can’t stop playing it. I just wish Nintendo would listen to the community and make this REALLY easy change. Expand

And the game still suffers from it's biggest drawback. Animal Crossing is a game that has no direction, it's about you personally finding stuff to do. And unfortunately, everything there is to do is the same mundane schlock you've come to expect from every other previous iteration of the game.

The "mystery islands" could have been a nice touch, but they are a quarter of the size of the normal island. Islands are picks from a small selection of pre-made islands instead of being procedurally generated. So instead of constantly finding new islands, after a weeks worth of playing the game, you'll begin to constantly see the same island types over and over again.

The developers made an attempt to give you more to do, but it ends up boiling down to being rewarded for doing the same stuff you have always done instead, while locking rewards behind "Nook Miles", a secondary form of currency in the game. The end result is, they've managed to already take a core mechanic from the game and turn it in to even more of a grind than it was before.

Animal Crossing's popularity isn't surprising; it was simply a coincidence, it managed to be released around the same time a massive pandemic was taking place. If it weren't for that, I doubt it would be getting such high accolades from people, because at the end of the day, this version is just as mediocre as any of the other releases.

For whatever insane reason, Nintendo has also decided to put in a bunch of really weird restrictions to the game that are ultimately unhelpful, frustrating and counterproductive to what a game should be.

Animal Crossing needs to be BETTER, not the same.

Anima crossing new horizons is a good game but it has a big problem. The fact that you can only have a island per switch is pretty bad for the ones that can't buy another nitendo switch and have siblings that are interested in play the game alone, that includes me and my brother. I really hope that nitendo fix this issue because it's the only problem that i see with this game.

I can´t believe the one campaign per console limitation. This is the biggest disappointment I had in any 60 dollars game ever. I did not know about it when I bought it, why would it be like that? Never saw that before. Anyway, the game can have a really nice gameplay, but it wont be a game until this is fixed, which I think wont. Total scam, Nintendo.

As I don't see any point in playing with an inferior character, I just deleted my character and let my sibling play the game on their own. If they allowed the second player to have the same responsibilities as the first player or allowed 1 island per game cartridge, I would have bought another game cartridge to play (which would also be a profile for Nintendo), but no, Nintendo wants us to buy separate consoles. Nintendo is very money hungry. I have the money and can buy my own switch, but I refuse to support such greedy actions as there are other families that can't afford to buy a switch for each child. I guess I will go back to my PS4. Expand

At this point, I only play out of obligation and I'm astonished with how they released this in the state that it's in. It is abundantly clear that New Horizons was released in an unfinished state, seeing as there are straight up omissions of features and items that were in New Leaf, and plenty of rookie mistakes that seriously should've been spotted in the testing phase but were left unfixed. Such as the lack of bulk crafting, ability to take materials from storage while crafting, the list goes on.

When there is a fanmade video that shows the kind of QoL changes that could be in this game, you know that the devs did not take the time to fine-tune the game before release. I'm aware a lot of people are glad the game is out with current world events happening as of now, but that should never excuse that the game has problems that should be addressed and that the players should at least be notified that there will be some kind of QoL update down the line. Instead, they go and just screw with the bug spawn rates, just making it harder for people to catch them for no good reason; and even go around and heavily reduce the interest rate to only a maximum of 9,999 bells. Something which was not needed in the slightest and it's an enigma of how they thought that was okay to even consider.

Not to mention the multiplayer is a complete joke when sharing a console with others and online multiplayer is just as bad with mounds of text form Orville to just connect online and even then, Nintendo's netcode is still just as lousy as always.

All in all, Animal Crossing New Horizons is a game that has massive potential, but is held back by a tidal wave of problems and lack of QoL from releasing unfinished. As such, this is the worst game in the series, and I cannot in good faith recommend this game which sucks coming from someone who adores this series and just wants to see the best for it and this new entry. Hopefully, later updates address and fix the myriad of problems and turn New Horizons into the worthy entry that it should be.

There are about 6 colour types for all furniture, but a single player can collect only one type of them on their own. To get the colour that you don't have, you have to do multiplayer which again is so inconvenient mainly because of 1-minute freezing time inserted each time when a player joins to an island.

Furthermore, although this game is advertised to enjoy the multiplayer, there aren't many things to do online except trading furniture or selling turnip (online mini-games existed in New Leaf is now gone). Not to mention that other systems that were available in previous games, such as town ordinance and haniwa, are now deleted.

I'm sure they want to sell more switches but not everyone can afford to spend 400 dollars just to play the new animal crossing game. Shame on you, Nintendo.

That's not even all of it, the gameplay itself is atrocious. Put aside the 1 island per switch issue and you're left with a game that uses up half of your playtime in menus you can't speed up. At least in New Leaf and such you had the option to skip through dialogue with (B) and not have to sit there button mashing for a good 30 seconds just to go to Tortimer's island, for example. The crafting would be SO fun if it wasn't so tedious.

I was also excited about the path system! That was something we desperately needed but the way it works is really infuriating when you just want your island to look neat. Having grassy gaps and not being able to fill in spaces under or around structures... it boils me alive. I know I'm nitpicking at this point, but they made Animal Crossing for the switch. It should pride itself in a little more polish and playability.

It is not possible to play your own island with your own profile. Animal Crossing (AC) continues with it's tried and tested formula of grind materials to make things to sell in the grind for bells (Capitalism at it's best). In the words of Tod Howard, it just works. And that's fine, this game has and will always be, a grind. MMOs thrive off this and so does AC. And for Player 1, AC ties in some thin story to help make the grind feel like an achievement. For ANY other player, you're stuck in an endless loop of grind WITHOUT any story.

For additional Players (do remember that Nintendo have a ONE ISLAND per Switch policy), there is no story and so no achievement reward for improving the island and so you're forced into essentially a glorified Fishing Simulator. Craftable items that are locked to the story, yeah, Player 1 will have to craft them and give them to the additional players (some of these do appear in the shop once unlocked, but not all).

It screams cash grab from Nintendo, forcing parents to purchase multiple Switch devices for the warring kids over who should be Player 1 and get the full AC experience or be relegated to a Player controllable NPC. For the price of another Switch plus the game, I can see why Nintendo would be rather slow to patch this as the longer it goes, the more devices they'll likely sell.

My suggestion is, as the first line says, NintenDON'T buy this game if you share your Switch. If you're a lone Switch Wielding Warrior, then I can recommend this to a point. As others have said, there should be two scores for this title, as 2 is a bit low for the single player experience. However, it is advertised as a Multiplayer game, which it clearly is not.

Still looking for a time consuming build up your own unique world? I can fully recommend Stardew Valley as Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has really gone up and above with this title and won't leave anyone feeling left out, relegated to generic tasks.

For some nonsensical reason, that is not allowed. Couch co-op is ONLY allowed on your island. And on top of that, the options for players 2, 3 & 4 are drastically limited. So much missed potential with this feature.

    2. Only the first character to be created (the Island Representative) can travel to other islands online. I made my character 2nd, and I cannot travel online. It tells me I need to buy an additional Nintendo Online subscription. That means that if I am playing my character, I am pretty much stuck on our island. Why would Nintendo do this? Why should I need two online subscriptions for one game, on one Switch? I can't think of any logical reason to do this. Seems like blatant greed, to me.

Games released a decade ago have had more robust multiplayer than this. I just don't understand how, in the year 2020, a company as experienced as Nintendo can do such a poor job on such an important feature.

    1. All the profiles on a switch play on the same island. At first this sounded interesting and it felt like our house would have its own community. What makes this annoying is that you are on an island with finite daily resources so if my wife plays before me she could take most of the resources on our island. Granted I could spend nook miles to go to a random island to get resources but it was really disappointing searching the island for leftovers.

    2. This First person to play the game can impact the progression of everyone else playing. This person becomes the island representative and they get assigned objectives that lead to the islands growth. I let my wife play first and I found my self waiting her to build some buildings and could not participate the same way. My profile can only do the side objectives. It felt like the idea of there being two people playing the game on one the same switch was an after thought. Or a greedy money grabbing attempt from Nintendo.

    3. Most craftable items are just decorative. In games like the sims, minecraft, and Stardew Valley you had decorative items but also a lot of items the are functional. Like a stove to cook food or a bike to make you travel faster. In animal crossing I made a bike and a stove and they just sit there and I can't use them. It makes crafting kind of boring because you don't create something useful. I have an interior design app on my phone and it feels kind of like animal crossing.

    4. Social media seems to be a big part of this game. One of the cool things about this game is that your island is unique and what grows on your island does not nessarly grow on a friends island. For example Apples grew on my island and peaches grew on my sisters island. In order to get different resources you either need to get extremely lucky and find them on a mysterious island or trade with a friend. If someone is your friend on the switch you still have to friend them in animal crossing. It is independent of your switch friends. The best way to trade is to get on social media or forums. This would not be so annoying if switch had a mic built into the console. Instead I found myself having to type everything out. What made it more annoying is that my wife (the island rep) did not have switch online for her account. So the person who had the most important role could not do online trading. If you are going to force us to share an island then this island should have a shared subscription. I started getting bored because i was not the representative but my account was online so i had to do the trades.

5.Multiplayer is not that fun. Couch co -op is in the game, but to play it you need to have a profile and a character made on the island . For couch co-op the second player is forced to follow the first player and can not keep any resources. In Online multiplayer you can't do things like move decorations while someone is visiting your island. Online players can keep the resources they take from your island.

6.Lack of goals. It wants to be like minecraft in this aspect and wants you to choose your own path. Minecraft is massive with so much to explore and learn about, animal crossing is small and most island feel the same. Stardew Valley is also small but you can explore with crafting and i remember gathering resources just to see what a crafted item does. In animal crossing the most exciting things are a new visitor, a large fish shadow, or a bug that can attack you. It just does not have enough different things for me to do or learn about to care or get lost in.

7.NPC relationships do not really feel like they progress. I don't feel like my npc's see me more as a friend than when they first came. Npcs with the same personality they start to get repetitive in conversations. Don't get me wrong there are some interesting things that they do but it seems few and far between.

    8. The real time can be annoying when joined with the problems above. Basically i play the game at night after my wife and the nook shop closes. You can put stuff in a box to sell but you get penalized and lose 20%. It is annoying because when you start the game the shop is open 24/7. If you work late you might be inconvenience by this game.

Overall it feels like a grind for both me and my wife.

Very rushed, poor UI, and little to no potential growth for the game as it stands. Nintendo already has my money don’t let them take yours. You’d be better off with Zelda or Mario at least those don’t force you to click a button through repetitive dialogue when you’ve dung up the same fossil or catch the same ladybug 50+ times. This is more than enough justification for my rating. Thanks for reading. Expand

Pretty fun game. I would give it a 10/10. However, as much as I'm enjoying this game, not being able to play on the same console with someone else and have their own game is unacceptable. If every profile can't play the game normally, they shouldn't charge a "normal" price for it. Having only one island to me at least lowers the value to like a $35 game tops, not a $60. The other big problem I have is how tedious they have made simple things. Why do I have to restart every conversation if I either change my mind or want something different. It would not be a problem if there was a way to make all of the text appear on the screen at once. It takes almost a whole minute of Orville rambling just to type in a dodo code, and if you mess up, that island's full, etc, you have to wait through another 30 seconds of dialogue just to leave, and if you want to use a different code, you must sit through that minute convo again. For a game that almost requires visiting people either locally or online (can't get all fruits otherwise) that is stupid. You want 3 of the color variants of one piece of clothing? well, too bad. You have to go in and out of the dressing room because you can't buy more than one outfit at a time. Also, Home storage should be considered when crafting in your house. I have to open inventory, take what I want out, close inventory, craft, and then put everything back. The UI is not well thought out. I understand it's "realistic," but I don't consider the airports being a pain in the *** and vendors who won't stfu to be something that a game needs. They have either lost their minds and don't realize how tedious this was before even releasing the game (Do you playtest), or they just didn't care. either of the two is ridiculous, especially for a globally-established company. When I first bought this game I really enjoyed it. I didn't mind the slow pacing at release and it was a fun way to kill time. The longer the game has gone on though the more I have realized how much this game is dependent on RNG. Eventually everyone will come to realize that this game is actually a grind casino dressed up as a fun way to kill time.

My husband bought the game and started it., but got bored pretty soon. Meanwhile I continued, only to find out I cannot do anything but fish and collect bugs, as any kind of progression is locked due nintendos greed to force people buy another device.

Only good if you're the first player- the player who sets the game up. If you're the second player, you can't do anything except upgrade your house and sell stuff. If you don't share a switch with anyone, it would be great! If you have multiple players, there's no way around it. You'd have to delete your island.
Wouldn't bother buying the game until it's fixed- IF they decide to fix it.

While I would love to give this game the glowing review it deserves, I cannot truthfully do so. The simple fact that no two players can have their own island on the same Switch is outrageous. This feature makes the game not worth purchasing if you intended to share it with someone else. This should be changed, but as long as it stays the same this game is not worth it for more than one person.

This is a super fun game. I enjoy. My son enjoys it. The limitation of one island per Switch (not per cartridge, per Switch) is nonsensical. It‘s obvious Nintendo is just trying to sell more Switch consoles... Sorry but this is an instant 0/10

One island limit means you get a watered-down game with no substance if you're not the first player. I really hope they change this so I can actually enjoy the game to its full potential.

One thing that keeps bugging me about this game is the lack of character development between the player of the game and his neighbours. In older Animal Crossing games, your animal neighbours were strangers, and as strangers would act, they wouldn't instantly like you or be instantly gratuitous towards you. This made them personified in a way, they were more characteristic and the bond you formed with them felt more real. However, in this game, although the villagers are more expressive and DO more natural things, they FEEL almost robotic in the ways they act towards you, they say the same things, they feel the same way. It doesn't feel like they are truly happy when they are, or when they're angry, or when they're sad. But, even with that in mind, this game is still an amazing experience

Nintendo, make the characters more characteristic. Please.

It has gone from Life Sim (+Collectathon)
    To Collectathon (+Life Sim)

Anyways, I gotta get back to playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf on my Nintendo 3DS.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
