Absolutely do not understand the negativity on Metacritic around this game. People went completely mad in the process, as with the Last of Us 2. In Animal Crossing, you want to come back again and again. And you can't play much in one sitting. But that's the point. The desire and ultimate goal in the game is the same-to collect all the items, which are simply unthinkable huge number. AndAbsolutely do not understand the negativity on Metacritic around this game. The desire and ultimate goal in the game is the same-to collect all the items, which are simply unthinkable huge number. And how you will achieve this and how quickly you will get bored is everyone's business. But this game must be played by everyone who has a Switch. Good graphics, nice character style, nice music (the first 30 hours, then the sound turns off:)), interesting opportunities to rebuild your own island, a lot of events, which are also linked to the online, the change of seasons and of course the time that corresponds to the real. Fishing, catching insects, mining, growing trees, settling residents in the form of various animals, collecting shells on the beach, swimming. It seems to be simple things, but how well it is organized. Separately, I would also like to mention online trading with real people. The same items accumulate a lot over time and they need to be put somewhere. Some things are a pity to throw away, so they can be safely sold, for an adequate amount of course. Go to Nookazon and everything will be. In General, even after 490 hours that have already been spent in the game, there is something to do. It is impossible to describe why this game is played, just try it. Expand

I love this game, I always loved it but as a player 2 I am devestated to realize that I basically have no function on the island and can't really do anything. My flatmate and I wanted to share a Switch but we never wanted to share an island (we didnt realize we would have to) because the powers of the individual players are not balanced.

This game came at the perfect time when quarantine started. All we needed was a relaxing game where people could play with each other online while stuck in our houses. Animal Crossing New Horizons is just that. This game is absolutely amazing.

The game is beautiful, but the lack of objectives and the fact that you have to wait a whole day for certain thing makes it feel like a mobile game instead of a triple A experience.

I share my Switch with my 9 and 4 year old daughters. We have different play styles and all want the ability to explore the island, shape it, name it and play as we each see fit. Having only one island makes this a single person ever game and completely poisons it. It paints Nintendo in a deeply cynical light and has wrecked an otherwise decent game.

Me and my sister bought this game together only to find we couldn’t both play the game on our own islands. My sister plays but since I’m not the island representative it’s really no fun playing as you can’t experience over half of the game. The game seemed promising but as long as only one person per Switch can play it gets a zero from me.

But to think I could have got Pokemon for the same price!? I also don't get why time travel is a point of contention... Don't people get that the whole waiting game is just artificially bloating the experience by forcing you to grind, doing activities devoid of fun over and over again in the meantime. That's the kind of manoeuvres used in freemium games on smartphones. Expand

The fact that they keep updating the game with new content and events to bring more to the game is also a plus and it gives value to it. The sound and graphics are simple but fine for this kind of genre. The gameplay is good and easy to learn.

The one island per console was a really let down for sure, I bought this game not only for me but for my girlfriend too, and despite the fact that I already knew about this issue, I didn't think it would be as bad as it was. Has I played first I got to be the Citizen Representative and that removed a lot of gameplay, which includes assignments and objectives, from the second player. The multiplayer in the same console is also really weak, not giving many things to do to the player that is not in command.

In summary, as I said, I liked it, but after spending more than 20 hours into the game I kinda felt a little bored with the the concept and the fact that after some time you keep doing the same things all over again, and you lose the purpose to play. In the future with the new updates and new content that they keep adding I may feel tempted to give it another try and spend a few more hours into the game.

I was really excited when the game came out and I played it for about one month straight. I know that this AC is mainly targeting new players, but all in all many things just are a little bit too easy.
I've filled the fossils in the museum after around 60 days of playing. When I think of Wild World and New Leaf, this felt way too quick. Also to pay your house and all other expenses to Tom Nook was really easy.
What I really like is the new interaction of the villagers, how they are not just simply walking around anymore, but do different kind of actions, they react to the environment and with each other. This is incredibly cute and makes them feel much more lively.
Even though the developers announce new updates and tried to slow the progress of the game down with the different waiting times for e.x. the museum, the excitement for this game burnt down rather quick.
Additionally, I am really bummed about the furniture. There is so much less than in New Leaf and so many sets were thrown out... resulting in always getting the same kind of furniture in Balloons, Trees, the Nook Cranny and so on. And this is kinda frustrating.
I personally think they did this so you visit other islands more often, but for me Animal Crossing is a game to relax and often I just want to play for myself.
Still, I am playing Animal Crossing almost daily, as I am excited for the visitors and now with the Summer Update, I love swimming around and collecting more sea life. But I am not playing as much anymore as I was used to. Often I just do the dailys like collecting miles or the DIY recipe (which never results in a new DIY) and that's it.

BTW: Everyone who hates on "there is just one island" has never played an Animal Crossing before - and it shows. They always just had one city for one game. That this wouldn't be different on the Switch was obvious. Just inform yourself correctly and don't blame the game for it.

I've never played any Animal Crossing before, however New Horizons was a rewarding experience. From what I know of the previous instalments I think the building of your own town on this island is the best evolution possible. It's got a good sense of humour and it exudes positive vibes.

With the consensus that this is a fairly good game I must denote the sometimes baffling negatives:

-You can't have one island per user, only one per console. The 0's piling up on this website only serve to show how broken Metacritic's user system is. However it is really stupid. I don't think it's intentionally greedy, or if it's a storage thing, I think Nintendo was just stupidly paranoid about "cheating" but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would totally undermine the game if they had an island per user.
-Menus and especially shopping menus, my god. They are not intuitive at all. I hate to compare it to another game but it doesn't have the quick interface of something like Minecraft. Also the lines of dialogue need to be way faster, I don't have all the time in the world to listen to Blathers.
-Digging, picking up stuff and landscaping can be absurdly frustrating. Again it's slow and imprecise to hit things with your shovel, and don't get me started on how many times I've picked up the wrong object, or haven't been able to place something because it wasn't clear, or shaped the wrong cliff or river. I know it's not meant to be a platformer or action-adventure but I think avatars would benefit from a much more robust moveset, and an interface that's a lot more precise and doesn't take its sweet time.

With that out of the way, ACNH is fun, and I'm burnt out on it now but when the world gets closer to ending I'll come back to it and have a grand old time.

Already the game is quite addictive in that certain game mechanics "reset" at the start of a new day (such as harvesting and long-duration builds completing). I've not yet visited another island as the cost is still a bit too high. The synced world time is pretty interesting as well as certain things are available based on TOD--I've never played a game like this. To think that there are seasonal elements is quite exciting--can't wait until Halloween!

So far, the cons are the highly irritating character voices that can't be muted; after the initial few minutes I was wishing I could just do away with it. Cycling through the menus is rather tedius.

I cleaned up my island and did significant upgrades in three days. After that, and even during, there is little to do. There are lots of tiny goals to knock out, but to minuscule reward. Grinding towards more upgrades feels pointless because the game starts with little to do, then you get a few upgrades. Is there more to do now? No. More to buy, maybe, but no injection of more activities. Just more fishing and shaking trees. Grind for more upgrades. Is there more to do, now? Not really. You can spend an extra 30 seconds a day now digging up fossils. That all.

It's not really worth talking about. Or playing. Feels super lonely, and flying to others' islands to fish next to them doesn't make it better.

    Really disappointing.

That's the impression I've been left with after 40 hours with Animal Crossing, and I'm honestly surprised I lasted that long. Then again, it is designed to get you playing every day as you're drip fed progress whilst you do the same boring tasks every day like picking up stones one by one or fishing where you can't move your line after casting it without just casting it again altogether. There's a lot of quality of life improvements that could be made here that even fans of this game have to admit, like being able to craft multiple items at once, for example. There's a lot of repeat dialogue that gets annoying as well, and when you give Blathers a new fish, insect or fossil in the museum you have to click through the same bunch of stuff every time for every item you bring before he'll tell you an interesting fact about it.

I can see the appeal a game like this might have to some people, as it is an escape from the real world where everything is pretty chill and you can design your island as you please. I found it really stressful though, and I know that might seem weird to some people. But the daily grind got to me, slowly ticking off those menial tasks and stressing over how to decorate my home. That might sound silly but if you're not the most creative person or you fuss over the little things, you might get a little stressed too.

There are some things I liked. It's got a very cute aesthetic and the museum is a really nice way to show off all the things you've caught and found. There's a lot of freedom in what you wear, and how you design your island and house which is great for creatives.

I wish I could've loved this game like it's many fans do, but I found it boring and stressful. It's got the Nintendo polish you'd expect, but also some quirks about not being able to have islands linked to individual accounts instead of the console that many people have complained about. Overall, I'd have to score this game 6/10. I might check it out again some time down the line, as it is getting updated with new seasonal events but I doubt those would fix my personal issues with the game.

I start off I only played a small amount of new leaf before this game so I was going into this game with little to no knowledge. So I'm no long time fan of the series or anything or the sort.

I guess I'll start off with the pros:

-This game is so damn peaceful.
-Despite the slow progress at the start of the game it never leaves you bored, it leaves you wanting more.
-The progression of your island is entirely up to you.
-The detail of the graphics, animations and lighting is absolutely gorgeous, a huge step forward from previous games.
    - The ability to terraform is a big bonus (although it has its own issues).
    - If you are a collector/achievement hunter (which I most definitely am), this game will give you plenty to work towards.

So with plenty to do and more to do than ever, what could go wrong... right??
    Well a lot apparently.
    The cons!!:

-While crafting is a huge step forward for the series, as well as all the benefits it gives. It is the single most tedious experience I have experienced in a long time. It is also the worst part of this game. Why do I have to craft one item at a time, and whyyyyyy does it take so long to craft that ONE item? I spent (and I counted) 7 minutes making
    twenty fish bait.

-The tools have no durability bar so you can never tell when they're about to break.

    - Of course one island per console is a massive pain in the ass. It's obviously used to get more people to buy their consoles and I guess it works. So great job Nintendo marketing team! (ya knobs).

-Terraforming can turn your island into a beautiful paradise, but it's going to be hell before you get there. It feels clunky to use. You will hit the wrong patch is dirt 9 times before hitting the right one. It's just an all round mess right now and needs a serious overhaul.

-While you can track your bugs and fish, you can't track the fossils you have donated, which was in the last game so I have no earthly idea why they removed it.

-Villagers personality types are far too similar to other villagers. I'm sick of hearing three separate villagers talk about "the bugs in their floor". There needs to be more diversity between each villager.

FINALLY, this is not giving nintendo flack for making a shoddy game, I think it's beautiful, addictive and a great way to blow off steam. So I'm just going to give some suggestions the game needs in the future.

-The ability to craft multiple items at a time.
    -Manilla clams stacking.
-More buildings/shops to build from Tom Nook (Like the coffee shop, or disco).
    -Tracking fossils
    -An easier way to terraform
-The ability to boot a villager from your island instead of ignoring them for 2 months.
    -Durability bars for tools
-Less frequent rain. My island is starting to look like a jungle.
-Less time it takes to go to another island, seriously I spent probably 3 minutes talking to orville.
-An auto-sort option for my inventory.

You'll see that 90% of these are just quality of life features. Which is exactly what the game needs. I don't care about a diving update if the game continues this way.

Well that rant is over. Hope nintendo read this stuff... they probably don't... BUT MAYBE THEY DO... nah they don't.

I love the animal crossing games so much but this one was a serious let down if you have to share a console. Let my daughter play first and now I can’t do anything. Really don’t want to spend another 200 for a switch just so I can play this game. They need to update a patch that lets you switch island reps or let us have different islands on the same console because this is really lame.

Previous games supposedly had plenty of stuff like Nintendo themed furniture and exploring islands with friends, but here there's none of that and I don't care if they add it later, its not the game you get on cartridge. You should however keep all the content, and add on top of it. Not remove them and add them later like they're doing here.

Everything takes forever, building new bridges and relocating a house takes a day and you can't do more than one, all this to just drag your time without a good reason, which is why people time travel, if you want to discourage time travelling by removing content, how about not making things take so long to do and putting up so many roadblocks?

I do check back into it every few days but I'm never hyped to play more or partake in any tiny events Nintendo adds, they're completely deaf to fan feedback, like that infamous egg festival and the randomness of item recipes and such can lead to lack of tables to put stuff on, making you have to use cardboard boxes or place everything on the floor. Its also lacking the simple ability many life sims have...Craft. In. Bulk.

I made a Metacritic account just to express how disappointed I am with this game. I've been playing the Animal Crossing series since Wild World on the Nintendo DS. I was SO hyped for this game. I got it the minute it came out on launch day, played for about a month straight aaaaand... I don't play it anymore.

This game is mediocre hence the 5 out of 10 score. Sure the graphics are nice, it runs well and the terraforming is a huge new feature. But Nintendo released an unfinished game. This game does NOT have enough content to justify the £50 I payed at launch day. So many iconic characters are missing. Where's Resetti? Where are Copper and Booker? Most importantly of all where are Rover and Brewster??? Yes I know Rover appeared briefly in the May Day update but honestly it wasn't enough screen time for such an iconic character.

Here's my other gripes with the game:

    - Iconic characters like Rover got shafted but we have to sit through Isabelle's boring dialogue every single day. In this game Isabelle does the morning updates so no more Rover in the spotlight. Isabelle is frankly an extremely annoying character in this game, always repeating the same dialogue about how she found her sock or something. She's supposed to report the news but the devs didn't think for her to perhaps report on the weather or mention which town visitors are on the island. Nah it's more important for us to hear about how she finished her puzzle (nobody cares Isabelle).

    - Speaking of dialogue, the villagers feel soulless compared to other games. What is the point of even talking to them when they repeat the same crap? And they always get annoyed when you talk to them twice in the same day. What a joke.

    - Furniture sets are gone. No more Froggy Chair was bad enough but so many iconic furniture sets just ceased to exist. I like being able to craft but not at the expense of many classic items which fans have loved for a long time. Gracie Grace is missing from the game so now I can't decorate my house with ridiculously expensive dessert shaped furniture - wtf is the point in playing?

    - Speaking of crafting, it is a long and tedious process. Say you want to craft 1 fish bait. You can't just craft 100 at once. Oh no you have to do it one by one. Everything in this game is unnecessarily difficult and even though fans have been begging for quality of life changes for months Nintendo don't care.

    - Events are so bad now. The egg event in previous days was just one day. This time it was a 2 week fiasco where your normal daily activities were interrupted by the stupid eggs. During the egg event you could catch eggs by fishing, from the sky etc. The problem was that this completely ruined fishing as it felt like 80% of what you caught was eggs instead of actual fish. If all events are going to be like this from now on I'm not looking forward to events like Halloween.

    - Town visitors seem to visit certain players over others with some people getting Celeste (who gives rare DIY recipes) every week while other players like myself have never had her on the island despite playing since launch day.

    - Finally, on to the terraforming... It's boring. That's all. It is so tedious and so boring. I don't enjoy the terraforming which is a shame because it's the only thing to do in this game. If it's something you think you may enjoy go ahead, buy the game but ever since I unlocked terraforming my playtime has probably dropped by 80%.

There are so many other gripes I have with this game but these are the ones I had off the top of my head. It seems like Nintendo aims to keep updating the game every few months with the content that should have been included on launch day. Apparently this is to "combat time travel" (also why they set events to 2 weeks so people would have to play during the 2 weeks and wouldn't be able to travel back to events). I don't see why Nintendo had to release such a bare bones game just because some people are triggered by people who play the game differently.

Anyway, maybe in a year when Nintendo has actually added the content that should have been in the game to begin with I'll go back to this game but for now I can't be bothered to dedicate any time to this boring game.

    1. Terrible UI designed to make you take the maximum number of clicks to do any single action

    2. After you've set up your island.. there's really nothing else to do. It's really not a very replayable game.

It's fun while it lasted, but probably not the kind of game I'll play over and over again.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
