This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boring, repetitive. In the live-services era, Nintendo decided to launch a game UNFINISHED, just to ignore it two months after the release. No regular updates, the same boring activities over and over again. At this point, i feel more entretained playing the mobile free to play Pocket Camp than playing this 60 dollar game. I'm almost sure i will sell it by the end of the month. Expand

I’ve been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons since release day and it’s definitely saved me during these difficult months.

One big update in the latest Animal Crossing game is the ability to transform your island. The terraforming aspect really adds to the game and gives you endless possibilities when it comes to decorating your island. You can build your own decorations and furniture with materials you find, which help towards the goal of reaching a 5* island.

The villagers within the game are as adorable as always. An added bonus is that your villagers no longer leave without warning, so you can technically keep your favourite villagers on your island for as long as possible. You can also go out hunting for your next villager which is a fun element.

The regular updates keep players hooked to the game, particularly the seasonal updates such as Easter, Halloween, etc. Seasonal updates gives you additional goals to work towards which brings you back to the game yet again.

Whilst I always return to New Horizons regularly, I’ve found that in recent months that I spend less and less time playing as I’ve run out of things to do on my island, which is a shame. There’s always the possibility of redecorating your island, but once you’ve finalised your design then it becomes difficult to find tasks to do to keep yourself busy.

Another negative that seems quite small, but can become quite frustrating, is the lack of storage. Usually it wouldn’t be a huge issue, however when one big element of the game is to craft items to use across your island, having nowhere to store your materials over time causes you to dump items on your island, bringing the rating down. This is disheartening over time when you can no long aim for a 5* island due to items being dropped on the ground.

All in all, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a lovely, relaxing game that keeps you coming back for more. The game could easily be a 10/10 game if some of the small frustrations were fixed.

If you have more than one person in your household that wants to play this game, everyone but the primary person is screwed. Only the primary person is gets the recipes to craft most of the furniture, and only the primary person can build homes for new residents or do any of the stuff required to advance the story. The other people can't even help out, other than gathering resources (woo fun).

As close to perfection this crafting/chilling type of game gets. Tiniest grievances aside (eg. lack of more content, repetitive villager dialogue) this is ace fun for the family—we’re 4 kids and two parents deep into it and everyone loves it unequivocally... the review bombing is unwarranted.

Another stellar AAA title from Nintendo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This could have been a Nintendo masterpiece, however the fact that I had to buy a second Switch (lite) just so that both my wife and I could play is really terrible customer service from Nintendo. I am now super frustrated that I cant move my game over to the bigger Switch and play on the TV. I have been stuck with the small screen for months and despite the fact that my wife is done with the game I have no option but to use the lite version. I pay for the online service but cant transfer my game between the two devices that I had to purchase! With every other game I own I can use both consoles as it suits. Nintendo has basically ruined the whole point of owning a Switch with this game. Again, terrible policy/customer service. Expand

This opinion on the game is without including the new updates!

I hated this game for one reason: It absolutely wastes your time in every aspect of the game. Why can't I craft multiple items of one type at once? Why is the inventory so limited from the start? Why are there always so many clicks you have to do for everything? Also, Nintendo. Why can't I cloud save this game? I would

Also, Nintendo. Why can't I cloud save this game? I would like to uninstall it and come back to it later once there are quality of life updates, but I still have to have the icon on my switch no matter what? That just seems wrong.

Verdict: This game would be great with enough quality of life updates. As it stands tho it's a giant waste of time.

Replay Value: 2/5 - There's no real reason to start over again since you'll repeat everything just with other characters on your island.
Enjoyment: 1/5 - It just got frustrating the more I played.

I've been playing for a couple months now, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Bounding with the villagers is really cool, customising your island and character and seeing how the flowers bloom, bridges are built and seasons pass is more entertaining than I thought it would be.

The downsides I'd say are how you can never choose quantity of items, you always have to buy and sell one by one (notable exception of flowers and shrubs, which you can buy in bulks). Also having to first craft a flimsy tool to only then be able to craft the normal one (crafting the tool directly would have been appreciated).

Don't get me wrong this is amazing, but that's only if no one else is playing ANCH on your Nintendo Switch. The devs put in a feature into the game where if more than one user is playing the game on the same console then you can't do story mode and for that single feature I give this game a zero and don't recommend unless you have more than one console for each person playing Animal Crossing

Traditionally the series has done this primarily by filling the game with such an abundance of content that you can play for years and still be surprised and see new things occasionally. This particular game in the series has FAR less content to support its long term appeal than ANY other game in the series long history, despite the fact that the majority of the features it does have are not even new.

Yes, they are releasing free content updates occasionally. But at the rate they are going with these updates, it would take many many years to even catch up to this games predecessor in terms of content (AC: New Leaf, 3DS), let alone surpass it.

This game has made a number of improvements to the formula, but it's severe lack of content kills it for me. It takes quite a few hours of playing for you to really notice how much less this game has, but once you really get a feel for that it is hard for me to still give this game any praise. I have very little hope that Nintendo is every going to fully correct this unless they seriously step up their game with the updates.

If you are buying this for a family, don't.

Let's talk about dysfunctional relationships. They are often caused by unilateral decisions and lack of communication.

The decision to have a primary player is a unilateral decision by the developers despite complaints. It leads to unilateral decisions by the primary player placing their wants and needs over the "secondary" players.

There is no warning for this. There is no documentation of this. The only way you find are are reviews and comments online. In other words, no communication. Not only that, but it creates a communication inequality within the family. The "lead" player makes the decisions. They can listen to other players, but they don't need to. The other players can suggest ideas, but there's no way to delegate or enable other players.

The game both practices and fosters dysfunctional relationships. Both between designer and player as well as within the family.

I gave it a zero because my family cannot play the game. I bought it for my family. It is worth zero to me. If they fix it, or you play it solo, I'd probably give it an 8-10 dependent on later content that I was unable to reach due to the Primary Player bug.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, this is a very cute and diverting game. I got it when it came out even though I had never played another AC game before, though I have put many hours into Stardew Valley so I thought it would be a good fit. Then the pandemic came and I got into it especially at the beginning. Didn't even time travel until late May or so. I've bred all the varieties of flowers, collected all the fossils in the museum and just finished getting all the artwork too (I'm not some sucker that's going to not TT and wait 3 frigging years of real life to get all the art), terraformed my island several times over, so it's not like I don't appreciate what is in the game. The problem is the seeming hatred Nintendo's programmers have for the players of this game. Talking to Gulliver or Gullivarr, you literally have to hit the A button almost 20 times to get through the dialogues to get your task from them. This is similar for interactions with EVERY NPC that isn't an island villager. Why does Kicks even come to islands? He never sells anything worth having and that's just one more day until you can get some useful like Redd on the island. Crafting DIYs is a pain. I gave up crafing bait probably back in July, once I had caught all the fish available to that point. IF I ever pick up the game again (and it's less likely every day), I will never craft bait again OR terraform again. Terraforming is one island pixel/cell at a time. Like everything in this game, it is beyond tedious. This isn't so much a game as a part-time job and about as enjoyable after the shine wears off. I'm to the point where I cringe every time I hear the Isabelle music when starting up the game, then close my eyes and hit the A button until she's done saying nothing... again.

Back to the villagers... so boring. It's like you're supposed to talk to them every day, but when you do 9 times out of 10 they say the EXACT same thing they said yesterday. Reading online about how the villagers have been dumbed down and made nicer since the earlier games makes it seem like a really poor choice. When you get to the late game - having plenty of bells in your account and upgrading the house and shops to the max, and having the villagers you want - there's NO reason to go to other islands with Nook Miles Tickets. I now have about 150,000 NMs and NOTHING to spend them on. And I have a few achievements left to earn more but they are grindy AF and it would take me another 100 or 200 hours to get them (I'm ashamed to say I've played this over 500 hours, but I blame that on the pandemic). Not interested.

To sum up: It's a pretty game with no soul and in the end, will bore the cr*p out of you.

I hit 5 stars, got my fossil collection to 100%, got my house to max rank, and slowly lost my will to play. There is nothing else to do. The landscaping tools are too slow and cumbersome to incite me to redesign my island. Catching new bugs and fish stops being exciting. I have 10,000,000 bells from how easy and exploitable the Stalk Market is. You and other people can't modify an island while hosting, leading all multiplayer sessions to devolve into you becoming a tour guide for 10 minutes. The animal dialogue is repetitive and boring. Nook Miles stop being an incentive to do anything later on due to the absurdly grindy goals you have to do.
The core gameplay loop stops being fun after a month, and makes me regret spending $60 on the game. Nobody I know that picked the game up at launch still consistently plays, and ive heard countless people say the same thing online. They're trying to add new content, but it's far too little, too late and I couldn't be bothered. Whenever I turn the game on, I play for less than 10 minutes, and go play something else. I want to love this game so bad after playing New Leaf daily for *years* but I just can't. Its a rushed, boring mess that has no right to be in the same prestigious series as Animal Crossing.
If you want to play an Animal Crossing game, you're better off playing New Leaf or Gamecube. This is not worth your time or money. The game is beyond saving with seasonal updates. The core gameplay loop is not fun. I am a long time fan that only wants the best from the series, and New Horizons isn't it.

With that being said, the game has some serious issues. It is severely dumbed down from New Leaf to a very disappointing degree. There are less fish to catch, less bugs, Museum is smaller, less shops, less shop upgrades, less furniture, less clothes and less house upgrades. All of these have been changed in favor of a crafting system that is painfully shallow and does not at all make up for the lost content. Nintendo is adding content over time but it's at a painfully slow rate and what is being added is not even close to what this game needs to be as good as New Leaf. If you are deciding whether to buy this game and haven't played New Leaf then you should just buy New Leaf instead.

    - NPC dialogue options are limited, they will repeat their dialogues after a few days.
    - There are only two shops, no Crazy Redd, no Gracie's shop. no Dream Suite, and only one upgrade.
    - Lack of Furniture Sets, no Classical, no Modern, no Exotic, no Regal.

However, New Horizons fails to impress after completing the various set of objectives. The updates may have addressed the issues we wanted but the one Island system still exists while we rarely see new things being added. These updates only added special temporary events which did not give me an incentive to go back. Unfortunately, this game is lacking variety compared to New Leaf and City Folk. I feel like this game isn't living up to the hype especially to people who have devoted their lives to the franchise. I hardly hate to say this but this game is honestly a bargain bin to me.

After six months of playing on my 5-star island, I do have to admit I've run out of things to do. I only log in once in a while to fill out my catalogue, say hello to my favorite neighbors, or the occasional new idea project that arises. I do really admire how Nintendo puts out monthly updates to keep you interested, though I haven't really found any of them to be super substantial besides the swimming update. I would've liked more quality-of-life improvements to make crafting and decorating more seamless, or even some multiplayer additions. It's always fun to visit my friends' islands and vice versa, though visiting is really the only extent as you can't build or play games together. My time with the game now is more pleasant than it is life-drainingly engaging. But it's hardly something I can really fault the game for, because I put over 170 hours into it! Most games I can't even break 30 hours before I'm tired of it.

I know I'll never be done with it, even if I don't play it as much now. And I know, I'll be eating up any new Animal Crossing games should they ever make another. For now, I'll keep holding out for a multiple islands update or some multiplayer minigames.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a good game, but I would be amiss to discuss the issues. The game has received a lot of hate for it and that's why the User score is so poor. So how do I feel about this game?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a fun game that you can spend over a hundred of hours in the game. There's so much variety and there's a lot to do. There are a lot of items to collect and a lot to customize your island. There's a huge cast of characters each with their own personality. It's also nice to visit a bunch of other islands. There's so many insects, fish, fossils, and paintings to collect and it's a nice and calm game to play.

The problems? The game is very slow (I'll explain) and plagued by a lot of bizarre problems that is dumbfounding that Nintendo refuses to fix. So let's discuss each one.

    1. The local multiplayer. It's effectively useless. You'll need to create a new profile on another user on the Switch. Once you got the other player... they can't do anything useful. You'll essentially just follow the designated leader and you can use tools. How fun.

    2. The game is "slow". No text speed options and every time you talk with someone, there is a lot of repeated and useless text. It results in button mashing to skip the same dialogue. It's a time waster. This is true for a lot of things in this game... it's not a game breaker.. but it's certainly a bit annoying.

    3. One island per switch. The first player to open the game will become the main account. If you share a switch and have multiple playing the same game, stay away from this game. The main account is the only account that will allow the game to progress in a meaningful way. If you want to switch who is the main account, you'll have to reset the game and clear all data. Seriously? But why?

All negative things aside, it's a nice game. If you're a true gamer, I don't see this necessarily being a game for you. It's a family friendly game perfect for kids, girlfriends, non-gamers, and adults that aren't big on games. If you want to share the game with someone, don't.... You'll need a switch per person and a copy of the game per person. AC:NW is a nice game. They are updating the game with free updates and I still have a bit of fun playing it a 1-2 hours per day. It's far from perfect, but the game offers a bit of fun.

    - Local multiplayer is practically a scam.
    - Online multiplayer is basically a middle finger to people with no friends that play the game. Matchmaking? Why bother developing such a feature when you can send people to Facebook to watch some ads.

Bought this game for the promising coop experience for me and my GF. Turns out the first registered player in the game is only able go do progress on the ‘’main storyline’’. GF lost interest in the game as the main player, and I did not... So im stuck playing 2 profiles. How about a detailed warning about this before starting making the profiles?????
And the coop experice is a joke only 1

And the coop experice is a joke only 1 player can really do anything, other players are limited to using tools and thats it, gets boring so fast....
I do not understand why is a good idea? Not even an option to make someone admin. No fun allowed. If you like solo play this game is for you, but find something els if you enjoy coop. The bad rating is due to the game being a huge letdown for me, would never spend this money if I knew those things.

Thank you for the drama and deception with my kids, nintendo. One island per console? What kind of stupid decision is that? This is ridiculous!

It is my first AC game and I love it. I also like that you get the updates for free. :3 Nintendo was lucky to release this charming game during a pandemic ;')

I’ve never played an AC game before. I love life-sim games. This AC reminds me of the Sims, but if the Sims bred with Minecraft and made a game with a terrible UI and a slight superiority complex through the stupid real time method- you MUST wait 24 hours to build this museum, HA. HA.

I’ve never played an AC game before. I love life-sim games. This AC reminds me of the Sims, but if the Sims bred with Minecraft and made a game with a terrible UI and a slight superiority complex through the stupid real time method- you MUST wait 24 hours to build this museum, HA. HA.

It has four main facets of gameplay. Resource grinding, hunting, customisation/crafting and multiplayer. I‘ll go through these.

    1. Resources

Grinding for resources, which you have to do with constantly breaking tools, is painful and will lead to mild insanity early in the game. You need wood? Hit that tree. You need stone? Hit that rock. Never-ending. Also, there aren’t enough resources on your island, so you have to fly to other ones created for resource grinding- this costs a stupid amount of in-game currency.

    2. ‘Hunting’.
You can catch bugs, fish, sea creatures and dig up fossils, all of which you give to the museum. This is fun enough and relatively interesting.

    3. Customisation.

You start on a deserted island. By the third realtime day if you’ve played quite a lot you’ll get some cool furniture to craft. By the 9th or 10th you’ll get terraforming. The customisation options are relatively wide ranging once you acquire them- but the time it takes is stupid and irritating. However, you can immediately design clothing, which is pretty awesome.

Placing furniture, however, is one of the most frustrating things- without a useful placing system you just have to drop it and hope it lands in the right place. Sometimes, even when there’s loads of room, the game says ‘no room to place things here’- one of the many irritating unskippable dialogue boxes. Also, moving things like trees is irritating- you have to eat. One. Apple. At. A. Time. Dig the tree up. Plant it. Making a forest is difficult to say the least.

    4. Multiplayer.

If you have Nintendo Online, for 4 dollars a month you can visit other’s islands with full chat facilities (beware if your kid is young and you don’t want them talking to strangers). This is good, because you can see people’ efforts to customise their islands and hang out with them.

So, in conclusion- this game is both fun (because of the customisation options) and deeply frustrating. For a game based on creating a desert island in your own way, it takes a ridiculous amount of time to unlock customisation options and there’s much, much too much grinding. Time travel is necessary to avoid deep boredom.

Buy it if you like life sims and aren’t bothered by grinding for resources.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
