This game is fantastic. A beautiful graphic and so many sweet characters. But there is a big problem: the text. The're so many text passages which are absolute useless. That is bad. But the rest is near perfect.

Game is fun and the customization compared to older titles is really nice. The gameplay is still fun though gets old quickly after a while, though get thats what the game goes for though it feels like you are just refreshing the shop for an item you might actually want eventually.

A chill game to just chill out with. I do find the villagers in this one to be very dull and uninteresting

This is a amazing game with plenty of fun to be had! But the issue comes if you started with the game where it becomes less appealing and more of a chore to play and hard to come back too and almost overwhelming with there now being lots of weeds and new features! Overall its a fun game i just wish the game came out with all the content at the start rather than adding them later

Easily one of my favourite games to jump into on the Nintendo Switch. Brings back the memories of playing on my GameCube, many times blown away how they managed to do something so beautiful but so simple looking. As systems moved on so did the versions of Animal Crossing. This is easily my favourite. You can fish, swim, and customize more than ever before.

The love Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon type games. So i thought for sure this would be right up my alley. Turned out to be way too tedious and felt more like chores than anything else. The relationships werent engaging enough me either. Maybe this game requires a bit more creativity out of the player than I was willing to bring to the table. But overall it left me feeling disappointed.

If I came back to New Horizons, I'd be terrified to open the tab. The reason why New Horizons felt dry after a while was because the game didn't do anything new when I unlocked K K Slider. After that you get terraforming which is really nice. I used terraforming for a couple days, I got content with my island's layout and that was it. However, don't take this review as me disliking the game because I clearly don't. It's so beautiful and relaxing and I'd recommend it highly for fans. Expand

Edit: back after almost 2 years, I'm dropping my score quite a bit now. The new updates were a step in the right direction but overall didn't fix the game's primary issue and that was longevity.
The longevity of this game wasn't good when compared to new leaf and I believe that's due to the very limited selection of items and overall barely any progression system.
Sure they added froggy chair back but still loved item sets never came back and felt replaced by less charming items. Then the shop never got anymore upgrades along with no other buildings on the island being added, it was a big disappointment hearing they would stop the free updates and it felt like they took our money and ran with it.

This is the worst animal crossing game to get started with and would recommend the older ones opposed to this.

Letting you click at least 60 times to do that. There are plenty of other such instances. It is just Ridiculous!

For my first animal crossing game i was excited, I understood what kind of game it was and I was intrigued. So I got it and for the first few days i was really enjoying myself, activities like fishing and designing my house was really fun. But thats really it over the next week or two i started to realise everyday i losing motivation to do any of these tasks and that's because they are very boring and tedious. Tedium was mainly what drew me away from the game, everything is just so slow for some reason. Crafting, digging, collecting weeds etc. all take so much time to do making whatever payout that you are getting diminish. I felt I was doing these tasks for no reason but to grow my village and have to deal with more of these issues. I had a dream of making a perfect island filled with cool characters as that was how the game was marketed, but progression is so slow; taking days to build houses, bridges and inclines meaning that dream of mine was hundreds of hours away. Why would a game make something so interesting so inaccessible for a majority of gamers.

Im a huge fan of Nintendo, but this game was boring but even when i had something to do it was bland, tedious and more of the stuff i had been doing for the past three weeks. Not to mention I never felt satisfied with the payoff for hours of work. Maybe coming from a similar game like Minecraft really impacted my thoughts on the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s still an animal crossing game so I enjoy it. However, so much content was missing from the past games. Many characters being absent besides in the roost is sad and Tortimers role in harvs island was just to give him a role as it is unfortunately a pointless role. Adding cooking is cool but I still think the game would’ve been way better online with actual games and stuff to do like tortimers island. I personally don’t like the direction of more customization and would like it to be like you are just a villager. Missing features like tortimers island and it’s contents as well as small things like seeing the size of a fish or bug really hurts the games rating. The last main issue is villagers being to nice or soft. The GCN game was way to mean but now they feel to soft and lacking personality. Overall it needed more content. Expand

Animal crossing is in everyway except for graphical fidelity a step down from new leaf.
After the tutorial there is no real progression and it really shines a light on how little there is to do in the game. You can go grind ingredients for recipes you dont have, listen to the 4 possible repeating sentences your villagers can say, or catch bugs/fish. Why is talking to your villagers such a bore? talking to them brings up a submenu basically asking "are you sure you want to listen to the repeated dialogue again?". In new leaf, you could talk to villagers for a long time before they started repeating themselves, i really dont know why it is so limited here, since its such a crucial aspect of the game.

With these main gripes clear, i would like to say that the game isnt all bad, designing your island and home is fun. Fishing is also fun, filling up your museum is the replacement for any progression the game otherwise lacks.

Overall this is a clear downgrade and the praise the game has gotten (perhaps because of release timing and new players) is not promising. I would recommend new leaf over this every day of the week, and you'll save 30 euro!

    What a shame.

Sounds and graphics are what they are, cute and colourful. As basic as it is, the overall atmosphere created by the aesthetics makes for a relaxing experience. And it needs to be relaxing as the game-play is the same as it has been in the past (with a few more features thrown in). You will spend the whole time grinding away to upgrade your house and your little island, all the while customising everything to your taste. Nothing more to say really, there is plenty of content and it's all what you make of it.

I must say, it might not have the depth or adventure of games like Stardew Valley, but it sure is satisfying. It was a joy to revisit my island day after day just to watch it grow! If you're after a warm and cuddly life simulator, you can't go wrong really.

I've put 1000 hours on this game. The update and DLC added a TON of new content. Tis a shame that this got review bombed by people upset that you only get 1 island per console. I kinda like that, as it makes you stick with YOUR island and makes you think more about the design choices you make. This is (I think) the best selling game of the last 5 years for a reason.

This game makes you feel like what you're doing in the game actually matters, and when you sit back and think about whether what you're doing actually matters, you realize the game shouldn't be fun. Then you play for 5 more minutes and you feel like it matters again.

It has been over a year and they are JUST NOW adding characters to the game that we have had in almost every other game in the series so far from the beginning. Also with all the updates, and knowing what people are most upset about they have not fixed the issue of one island per switch. It is unrealistic to expect everyone in the household will have their own switch just for this game. It was more reasonable to think that with the 3DS and even then multiple cartrigas got you multiple islands. On the GameCube multiple memory cards meant multiple saves. On the switch it’s one island per switch and everyone who uses that CONSOLE (as much as they want it to also be a handheld, it’s a console) has to live on the same island and only the person who starts the file actually gets any real say in how the island progresses. That makes it so that no one else really gets to enjoy the full game. If you have multiple family members sharing a switch that want to play the full game prepare to be disappointed. This fix would not be hard but they chose to ignore the issue in the hopes maybe people will buy more consoles? The new update coming is so large they definitely could have made this part of it and they didn’t. Now that they finally “finished” the game they released too early over a year later they are starting to release paid dlc? Not surprised they are mostly concerned with money and not their actual fan base. Expand

There is a wealth of things to do each day, although earlier in the game it limits you a little — probably to stop it sucking away your entire life — and once you've completed the main story arc there is still plenty to do. As the game progresses the story falls away and it becomes more and more like a sandbox game.

It's not perfect, of course: dialogues are lengthy and often add nothing, and the control mechanism for tools can be infuriating at times ("no don't dig that up," "put that fence back," "I didn't want to talk to them!") And as many haters have already stated endlessly, you'll really have to have one console per player in the house since all players on a console share the same island. But in spite of its flaws it's a game that makes me feel good. I will open the game in the morning to check one or two things and then, before I know it, I realise I'm an hour late for work. The online community really makes this game too. Visiting others' islands via online multiplayer is great fun and can help new players get ahead quickly, and it's amazing just how much content (characters, items, recipes, fossils, artworks, bugs, fish, characters' dialogue, etc) they've squeezed in. Well worth the cost when I look at how many hours of ejnoyment I've received from this little gem of a game.

Really good game but you do have to put a lot of time in if you want to progress your island as much as possible. If you’re not worried about completely beating the game it is good just to spend 20 minutes or so on it and just walk around your island.

I'm not a big fan of the loading times to get into the game. You sit through a load to get to the title screen, then another to be greeted by Isabelle, followed by another load screen to finally start playing the game. It's unacceptable that it takes longer to load into ACNH than it takes to load into a massive game like Breath of the Wild.

Also, there's the big issue of "One island per console". This would've been made a little better if it were possible to change the "main player" after starting an island. I wonder how many people started with one primary player who no longer has any interest in playing. Now you're faced with the choice of continuing with your limited experience or starting over and losing everything.

This game could be the best game on Switch, but it's plagued by some serious issues that brings the game down for me.

    CONTRAS:

Sadly that initial state of the game stayed...even until today. AC:NH has not gotten any major update for a long long time. Even the major updates that happened last year wore off already.

Nintendo really promised us 3 (or so) years of updates, sadly what they meant is 3 years of the same god-damn events every time. Gets quite sickening.

The villagers are also getting tiring, same dialogue, same robotic interactions. Not fun anymore.

I've spent 100hrs in this game and that's it to be honest, the game is stale and not fun anymore.
Everything just feels really old and boring and there's nothing new to do.

This is part of a bigger problem of Nintendo, over the years they started slacking more and more. Yes they do release amazing games every now and then (Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild) but a lot of their releases feel very "clean" with no life in them.

    OLD REVIEW 9/10 (Jun 28, 2020) :
    This game is amazing.

Animal Crossing is a game in which you can just sit back and relax to. A perfect game to escape reality with. The control is in your hands as you land on a deserted island with nothing but tents, you can build a thriving community. I love it!

With each new day you get access to new components of the game, yeah some might call it an unnecessary hindrance but this allows for a fresh dose of content each new day. Animal Crossing isn't about completing EVERYTHING in a day or two. You really do have to invest a lot of time and the game rewards you for doing so. Yeah not for everyone but for those who love games such as Stardew Valley this game is perfect.

The villagers (or I suppose Islanders) are very charismatic and make the island that much more fun. Yeah not all of them are great but there are just so many villagers that you can easily pick out your favourites and invite them to your island.

I love this game, I really do but I am also not a fan of the idea of singular saves per console. It really annoys me, I personally don't share my switch with my family as they don't care for Nintendo games but this is really spoiling the fun for others, also there is currently no CLOUD SAVING even though Nintendo brags about having that option for the NSO Subscribers. I hope Nintendo gets a grip and address this issue in the next update(s). Other than that I honestly have not major complaints.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got Animal Crossing New Horizons in March.
First it was really interesting and I played almost the whole day, but when I was finished with the main part ( having all the villagers, having all shops/ houses and being happy with how my island turned out) it got boring very quickly. I didn't play for weeks now because I have nothing to do. I have to say that Animal Crossing New Leaf was much better except for the graphics. The villagers were fun and you could to talk to them without them telling u the same few phrases over and over again like in New Horizons. Also it had much more shops and locations like the island with its mini games, the hairdresser and many more. In conclusion I think New Horizons is a fun game but compared to New Leaf it's being left on track.
Also it's bothering me, why couldn't nintendo just take New Leaf upgrade it a little bit and leave it there, bet that would've been outsold too in no time...

I wish that they had a craft all button or something like that. The main reason for this low score is because of the "one island per console" move that Nintendo pulled when they released this game. It's such a scummy move. They also had a bunch of features cut that were present in New Leaf cut only to bring them back in a later update. This was also perhaps the first time Redd wasn't in the base game at launch. Also the tool breaking function is really annoying especially when you're in "the late game." There really isn't a benefit to getting golden tools like in the previous games. The golden tools break in this game which kind of feels like a slap in the face especially for the amount of work you need to do to get the golden tools.

Overall this game is really fun and I enjoyed it. Annoyances aside, Nintendo's scummy implementation of game mechanics brought the rating down from a 8 to 10 to a 4.

New Leaf was an amazing game, one of my favourites of all time. My first year of playing, I managed to sink in over 500 hours. The game added so much, improved upon so much, it was one of my favourite video games of all time!

Then imagine my excitement when it was revealed a new Animal Crossing was coming to Switch. I was over-joyed! I was thinking about all the new possibilities, the new features, how it expands off of New Leaf! The trailer came in for February 2020, and then my hype was slightly narrowed down when they revealed Crafting... I was concerned at the time, however soon my concern would turn into a nightmare when I got the game on March 20th. I put the game in my Switch and was having a blast, however instead of what happened with New Leaf, where the game lasted me over half a year before I felt the need to take an extended break, it only took me just over a month to think that New Horizons should have been avoided. My Nightmares became true. The crafting was almost everything the game centred around, and it wasn't fun. Many objectives I was given, wether for Nook Miles or because of some Tom Nook stuff early on in the game, felt tedious rather than fun, like I didn't actually want to get these and look for these, but instead I felt an obligation to so then I could complete the game.

Then when I eventually got far in the game, I begun waiting for updates, because there were numerous issues the game faced. No Roost, No Shampoodle, No Re-Tail, no Shops besides Nook's Cranny and Able Sisters. The game was empty in features, and I sat down in my seat during every Direct, every trailer, hoping for a new building to be revealed. The realisation came in around Autumn, these were never going to come. The game was doomed to be a dissappointment.

The game was the first dissappointing Animal Crossing experience for me. I first started with City Folk / Let's Go To The City, and I loved it to death! Then I played Wild World for a short bit. Despite being a downgrade from the first game even, I still thoroughly enjoyed it for a more laid-back feeling, like you don't have to worry about coming on time for events as much, and you could go at your own pace, and it would still be fun. Then I played New Leaf, and like I said, one of my favourite games of all time, with City Folk / Let's Go To The City not far behind. Then I played the First game a few months after getting New Leaf, loved the game to death as well. Notice how all of the prior games to New Horizons, I loved playing like they were the only games I had in my collection. Hell, I even enjoyed Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival, and have started 2 towns for every game in the series, except for one... New Horizons...

New Horizons wasn't fun, and generally it was a mediocre - bad experience. It lacked the soul and features of other game, so you might as well buy those ones and their respective consoles instead, even if it costs more, it's still more worthy of the £50 - $60 price tag slapped on this, at best £20 - $25 experience.

One issue I would like to discuss quickly which can really show Nintendo's True Intent was that you could only have 1 island per Switch! So if you shared a Switch with family members, good luck trying to have your own independant experience!

And it doesn't hurt that, beyond the creature comforts and good vibes, there's a genuine case to be made for New Horizons as the best Animal Crossing ever. For the type of player who is extremely focused on curation, New Horizons offers the most customizable experience to date. And yet the more time you spend engaging with everything its world has to offer, the more likely it is for a profound sense of frustration and hollowness to set in. Many improvements to the series formula feel incremental rather than revolutionary, and there's a certain clunkiness to many design elements that you might expect a series to have ironed out by its fifth main installment. Worth noting is that despite numerous updates over the last year, the game still isn't nearly as rich in features or activities as its predecessor on the Nintendo 3DS. These are largely moot points, however, because the game delivers where it counts for many: As a fever-dream of cozy fantasy, and a brief antidote to increasingly uncertain times. Expand

However I actually stopped playing the game after the Holloween patch I felt it was starting to get very bland and very boring real fast yes.. this could be because I did play the crap out of it but it was the similar situation on the Nintendo 3DS where I found myself playing for long period of time and then just figuring out that is quite boring and that’s coming from a guy who spent 200 hours+ on the game.

All in all Animal crossing new horizons is a great game to start off your Nintendo journey however play for as long as you like you don’t necessarily need to pay for the rest of your life but I do recommend you play it up to a certain point. A point where you’re happy with your village and everything is going smoothly. To which then you can probably move on to another game. The reason why I didn’t give it 10 out of 10 is.. I feel like Nintendo has started to throw in elements which aren’t really related to the animal Crossing franchise they just do it for the fan base or an excuse to hype gamers into playing it again.

I might or might not find myself playing it in the future that’s disappointing because I love animal Crossing. Also it has become even more bland as people have started to cheat and started selling Animal crossing items, money, tickets etc on the Internet which ultimately made the game even more dull as obtaining items have become meh.

I put in the effort to unlock terraforming and then the game becomes a brand new game. I initially decided to spread villagers houses all over the island, but now I'm in the process of reshaping my entire island, with a residential area, a town business district, flowery parks with a little lake, a big camping lake, a forest full of waterfalls, and I also placed my house far away from the town in the hills and I want to make it bigger and better furnished. Basically, once you find the motivation to make a great and beautiful island to your tastes, you become hooked and it's a very soothing game. It draws you in like no other game did for me.

Of course, the game is not perfect. I wish Nintendo would bring some much needed quality of life improvements, such as bulk crafting, bulk buying, being able to craft in your house with items stored in your house and not only those stored in your pockets. Also, skipping already seen dialogues. It's currently a game of patience to suffer through Blathers' interminable blabber when you just want to identify and donate a fossil. And that, every time ! I wonder if this is done by design or if Nintendo just doesn't bother making player's lives easier. Bottom line, it is annoying that Nintendo doesn't address those problems, but they don't prevent the enjoyment of the game, far from it.

I'm not playing online so I can't comment on online issues. Also, concerning the one island per console thing, let me just say that I absolutely don't approve of Nintendo's decision to allow only one island per console instead of one island per profile. This seems totally arbitrary and anti-consumer. I am personally not concerned by this and I enjoy the game immensely, I think it is deserving of a 9/10. But I can understand the frustration of people sharing a Switch and wanting to both play the game.

Honestly, most of the haters and complainers of the game is people who had played more than 500 hours in less than a year, begging form more content in a 50$ with no DLCs game. It´s absurd. The game gives you a crazy amount of content and hours of fun. Relax and enjoy it, and remember, it is just a game!

A very fun and relaxing game, suitable for all ages! I particularly liked the different festivals that periodically take place on the island

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love acnh (animal crossing new horizons) it looks great but after 4 months and no time traveling it gets a little boring still play it every day!.

The story to get k.k. (a dog who sings) on my island was fun and making my dream island is fun too.

If that add new stuff then it would be a 10 or 9!

Why is there crafting in an Animal Crossing game? This isn't a Minecraft-style game! STOP STEALING FROM MINECRAFT NINTENDO! Nintendo most likely paid them to choose only the positive reviews and one mixed review for the game. THAT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING REASONABLE! Customers complain about most games in a variety of ways, and the way Metacritic does that is unrealistic and does not make sense. Metacritic, please do your research! Nintendo had to be SO **** STUPID. There is only ONE island, PER. ****. SYSTEM. I never got to **** play because I had to **** build on MY SISTERS ISLAND. I liked Nintendo, but they had to just squeeze more money out of the players to buy more switches to use more MORE THAN ONE **** ISLAND.

I'll admit. I was gonna give it a 6, but I just couldn't find enough good in it to be a 6. 5 is where it's at. But anyways, this type of game. The waste of time, no-good, stupid, half-baked game is enough to describe the entirety of this. Firstly, the graphics are good, I'll admit. For a Nintendo game, this isn't half-bad. For a Nintendo game, this isn't half-bad. The designs are nice too, with some nice scenery and stuff. The music is horrible though, and does not fit this game. There are three woods to describe this game. Boring, repetitive, and tedious. The long, repetitive, dialogue is tedious, the music is bland and sounds boring, and the whole game, in general, is indeed, boring. I've give it one thing though. It's visually stunning. You can walk and run with no lag, and browse around. The items also look pretty good, and the bugs and fish look stunning in the museum (once you build it). Considering how I got this on sale though, I can't give it a negative rating. I got it for $30, instead of $60, but if I did get it for $60, I would give it a 3 or 4. At least the museum is visually stunning, and looks nice. At least there's not a lot of lag. The controls are basic. Whatever. I can't think of anything more to say, so I'll leave it here. Overall, it's a 5/10. Pretty mediocre and bland, but does have some stunning graphics, and the museum is kind of cool. But the music is horrible, the dialogue is long and repetitive, and the game is boring. Expand

A solid entry in the animal crossing franchise, but do we really need crafting?

Content-wise it has less content than indie games like Stardew Valley that costs six times less and it's miles better. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is severely lacking if compared to the previous ones, a lot of NPCs and shops were cut out, the villagers interactions are pretty dull and becomes repetitive pretty fast, the numbers of buildings went from 13 (New Leaf) to a baffling 4 in New Horizons. Also they got out with some pretty nasty and scammy decisions that tainted the experience for me like for example:

-One island per console. If you want to create another island, buying another copy of the game isn't enough, you'd literally have to buy another $300 console

-The game released pretty unfinished, and they got out with it by saying they would implement free updates. Well, one year later and those updates proved to be VERY underwhelming and repetitive (literally every holiday event is: collect this item on the map, trade it for furniture, repeat). And even after one whole year the game is still severely lacking compared to previous ones or the microtransaction one (Pocket Camp)

-Some RNGs in the game are pretty much broken, my art museum is still pretty much empty because the Redd boat was programmed to almost never show up in the Island, so unless you're willing to time travel (which shouldn't even be a feature) you'll probably never gonna complete your museum collection.

-After, like, two weeks playing the game you'll probably =burn out everything the game has to offer and the only thing left for you to do is to check the holiday events that, again, is pretty much the same thing with a new skin.

-The mini-games, common in every Animal Crossing entry, are non-existent in this one.

-Brewster, Tortimer and Kapp'n aren't in the game and probably won't be added

-The gyroids, also common in every entry, are also non-existent in this one

-The game is probably abandoned by Nintendo at this point and won't have updates anymore.

Even if people find the game boring because of the lack of updates, I still find it interesting because creativity is a strong factor for me that keeps me coming back. I could go on forever and ever about this game, but long story short, this game deserved it's 10/10 rating from me.

EDIT 7/6/21: Yeah... that didn't age quite well.
The only issue with this game in my opinion, is the fact that the updates are...
You know, I would have been happy if they delayed the game in order to get the entire game packed into the base game. All we got is a game that is fun at the start, but gets boring because it's early-access. That's about it. Pick it up if you love Animal

That's about it. Pick it up if you love Animal Crossing, but New Leaf is superior in every way (excluding graphics).
Old review: This game is a masterpiece. It's a game you should ALWAYS buy for your switch no matter what. You can never get bored of it, and you can get so much hours off of it easily. There is so much to do in the game, and there is always something to do in it. You can customize the look of your character, your island, your house, and you can get villagers! This is, without a doubt, one of the best Nintendo Switch games.
So, you may be asking, why does this game have a 7.0 user review, and why so much hate? Simple, immature review bombers putting 0 on the damn game because of one **** con about it. Don't be surprised, they're just mad because they didn't do research, wait, didn't Nintendo tell us about it, and wasn't it like this for the past AC games? I respect disliking that dumb feature, but don't give this game a 0 just because of that, actually try playing it for a while first.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
