I was hyped, i really was. A game from Dead Space creator on paper sounds great.
Sadly the final product is very rushed with some questiobable gameplay mechanics.
In short, dodge system sucks, you use left analog stick to dodge left and right which doesn't feel good, especially when you fight multiple enemies at once. There is no indicator for offscreen attacks and combat becomes mess...

This game is painfully linear, basically straight corridor. Level design of Dead Space 1 is miles ahead.
There are no puzzles. Bosses? You got one mini boss re-used multiple times and one main boss. Biggest disappointment of 2022

This is what happens when you give an indie team of amateurs AAA money.

Horrible combat mechanics, terribly written, cliche after cliche after cliche, it’s definitely not scary, at all.

The only good thing is the ambience, graphics are great and the zombies look fine. But it becomes very monotone, very quickly.

Everything about The Callisto Protocol is about immersion, survival, horror and the weight of moral choices we make in life. It's a great horror game and wonderfully linear. Great and solid start to a new intellectual property. Now it's to see what the developers can improve in a future sequel! ;)

The callisto protocol is truly an underrated gem! It brought back the slow paces survival horror with an engaging mysterious story, well designed combat and to notch graphics and audio design. I can't wait for the DLC, I really hope there will be a sequel it deserves it.

I truly just don’t understand the hate. As someone who played every dead space, I think this does a great job of introducing the genre to next gen. Amazing visuals, fun combat, and insanely awesome atmosphere. I’m fully convinced the mass gamer base is braindead. They hate on games like this but then buy the same call of duty or madden every year.

It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a horror game so much. I love the game's mechanics, graphics, and story. I score based on how much I enjoyed the game and this is the most important factor in a video game. I don’t understand how many people did not like it

Maybe a played this game after some of the issues were fixed, but my only real gripe is the amount of crawling and squeezing through passageways in the game. Combat is good, story is good, and the graphics are on another level. This is what a next gen game should look like.

Gameplay is not on par with Dead Space Remake, but it's still great and Ill be coming back for the story DLC

Good Atmosphere, nice soundtrack, I like the game and the combat mechanics. But the Lipsynchronisation is awful, the story behind this game is okay, but not really catching. I played this game 3 times in 3 Days to complete Platin Trophy. You need at least 7 hours to finish the game once. Would recommend this game as a secondhand purchase, but not for the full release price.

I rate this game 10 stars because I genuinely believe it deserves it. Yes, it has some flaws here and there, but the overall experience is so good that I can forgive them. The graphics are stunning, the plot is decent, and the gameplay is addictive and rewarding. I highly recommend it, especially at such a discount.

Definitely got it's flaws, but I think it was treated unfairly, it's a really fun survival horror for Resident Evil 4 fans, with gorgeous graphics, nice level design and fun gameplay, The story is cliche and not very interesting, I admit, but it's still a good experience nonetheless. Maybe after a few years it will be remembered as an underrated gem like Days Gone?

wonderful graphics and a challenger game-play. The storytelling gets better near the end. The scare is not the strong point of the game: it's more action than horror, but it's a great game

I really enjoyed the game and don't really understand the negative criticism. It has great sound design, a dark and brutal story, some jumpscares and everything I wish for in a horror game. Yes, Dead Space had more variety in it. But still, I had a lot of fun with Callisto Protocol.

I wanted the story to pick up, to give me more clues as to the happenings of Black Iron Prison, not explore yet another creepy corridor or force me to beat yet another wave upon endless wave of monsters into a bloody pulp of tentacles and bones.

Oh, and the melee combat... I have such a love-hate relationship with the Dodge! I hated it at first, but as the game progressed, I noticed it was a dance. Once you learn the steps, you're fine! But that learning curve is brutal!

Regardless of the above cons, I was satisfied with the outcome. I do hope that the upcoming DLC will explore and/or explain the ending a little more.

Josh Duhamel plays both a likeable and sympathetic Jacob. All of the acting is superb. The graphics are outstanding. The sound design is next level, so make sure you have great headphones. The scares are...not really that scary, if you're familiar with the genre. But the death animations had even me squirming!

Side note: It's quite obvious that The Callisto Protocol is a love letter to the Alien franchise. The UJC Charon looks so much like the Nostromo! And I truly laughed out loud when the line "In space, no one can hear...your stomach growl," was said. Absolute perfection!

I hope it gets a sequel.

Overall it is good, but nothing special.
The atmosphere and graphics are the best (on PS5 sometimes it stutters, not fluid all the time).
Game-play is okay, "building" weapons, adding stuff etc. with that machine/shop is cool. Story is **** to be honest, always the same zombie stereotype. Characters are hollow, no depth. You play as a smuggler/cargo deliverer and somehow he can dodge

-It's not too long, which is a good thing when you do have a life (job, wife, grownup stuff). Also, if you are into going in through the hardest, it will be less overwhelming.

No! It is not a Dead Space truly successor, but that's ok in my opinion. It checks all the right boxes for it to be a fun game and to have a nice experience.
I suggest you guys to play it on Maximum Security difficulty and drop the difficulty if it really gets too overwhelming.

Wonderful homage to the original Dead Space from a co-creator of the original Dead Space ... except the story and dialogue, except the story and dialogue are far more trite. And it feels far more repetitive. And it feels more like being stuck in a very boring maze. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dark, gritty horror. It has several enemies, although I heard it had only a few. Main zombie type, security guard in armour, fat brawler, acid spitter, giant spider things, crawling exploders, little wormies, tentacle skull pods, two headed guy... & that's what I've seen so far by chapter 5/8. Combat is really fun & although it could be played as a straight up brawler, has a lot of guns that you can acquire plenty of ammo for. Gun changing isn't terrible, you just have to back up or run while doing it. Satisfying kills. Wonderful atmosphere. Plenty of tense moments, & a story that is extremely fun & moving at certain points. It is far better than the resident evil remakes or village. It could have been longer, but leaving me wanting more is never a bad thing. I far prefer that to a game that overstays its welcome. I say anyone who likes survival horror owes it to themselves to play it. Do not believe what you hear. Expand

While visually it’s excellent. Good audio. Story is present. My biggest fault would be the clunky combat, the severity of certain encounters that make a game go from tense to pure frustration. Unconventional but highly enjoyable. I couldn't put the game down for hours at a time. The main problems I had were switching weapons during boss fights and enemies attacking me from behind when I couldn't see them, but it wasn't enough to deter me. I actually like how the combat is very strategic, almost turn-based, while also testing your reflexes at times.

As far as controls go I had to tweak the sensitivity for the aim and look speed since the enemies are way too quick for your character to keep up with by the time I turn around I was already dead. The combat is very straightforward and to the point, dodge and attack with some other elements to kill the enemies .. story is a bit jumbled but you get hints of little clues of what is going on as you find audio tapes and other clues later in game . Overall some tight areas which make keeping track of monsters behind you hard .. things attacking more than once make it hard to continue to dodge .( I am playing on the hardest difficulty by the way) so it takes a lot to kill things.. healing does take a bit of time with lengthy animation of him kneeling down which I don’t understand why would you need to kneel down to inject your neck .? But ok .. the tightness of gameplay in cramped areas has its downside making it extremely difficult to keep up with more than one enemy . Again that can be due to difficulty Which is fine and realistic in’s a sense .

I feel at times callisto tries hard to be scary with jump scares and other things which audio to me gives off I feel I expect a lot and predict what is gonna happen at times , though even still very beautiful and audio absolutely amazing! At times Lip sync in certain cases don’t line up and turns out worse than those dubbed 1970/80s kung fu movies Even with all these gripes which are fixable and have been improved slightly it is still a decent straightforward action game with amazing visuals . I would recommend it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is average at best. You can see that they were in a hurry to release it. The design of the environment itself is interesting, the soundtrack is great, but it all comes down to the image of a beautiful environment which is.... empty. The combat is unsatisfying, you don't feel the upgrades you unlock during the game at all. Using the gravity gauntlet is totally unintuitive, I fight two enemies at once, and the gauntlet targets a box from the corner of the room instead of the enemy.

The game is full of bugs that spoil the immersion. In one stage we fight enemies who are blind, reacting only to sound. You can murder a nearby enemy with a knife, you can trample him, you can throw an explosive cylinder in the corner of the room - other enemies won't pay attention to anything. They only react to shooting and walking.

The Polish translation in the game is one of the worst I've ever seen, it sounds like the person translating doesn't know what the game is about at all, there's also a mass of untranslated texts or those that were translated shamefully badly. In the English version they said "It's busted" (the elevator), in polish they've translated it as "They busted us".

The dodging and blocking mechanics themselves are tragic, as we fight one opponent it is acceptable. But when fighting several opponents - you don't know what's going on.

The controls are tragic, selecting weapons/healing/energy replenishment requires a hell of a lot of clicking.

Information about the world we collect is very perfunctory, a few sentences at most. We have to play the audiobooks ourselves in the menu, why don't they automatically turn on when we pick up like in dead space? I don't want to go into that menu, click, search, just to hear 3-4 sentences.

On Playstation5 I had 4 situations when the game turned off by itself. Numerous FPS drops. The whole game took me only 8 hours.

Disappointing, is how I would sum it up.

I liked almost everything about the game. Music, SOUNDS!
Amazing graphics! Yes, some questionable decisions were made about checkpoint system and strange dodge behaviour in some places. BUT Overall gameplay process and pacing fell damn good. I feel big love from developers. Also, the plot is simple yet engaging.

Don't know why the game is getting such hate. It's visually stunning, atmosphere is great and combat is fine (albiet a little repetitive). Not the most amazing game I've ever played but I didn't expect it to be. It's just a good old fashioned survival horror. Well worth a play.

They are long! A minute or so! Level design is the bottom of the barrel. linear paths with minimal interction with the environment. small optional side paths exist but but add little to the level design. when traveling make sure to go the optional way first. because the games are full of points of no return. Most of these arent predictable either, such as doors locking behind immediatly for no reason. to top it off youll be slowly crawling and side walking even more GOW ragnarok.
On a related note, inventory and saving is busted. you have a limited inventory but no way to store items. The items you cant pick up will surely be lost on account off the invisible points of no return. saving makes item managment unbearable. a game may save before you pick up optional path items, then dying sends you back to before, not only before the battle, but before you tediously picked up items on a side path. This cant be ignored becuase selling items is key to upgrading. This is why dead space had SAVE STATIONS. I could go on and on about every detail that was done correctly 20 years ago in other games but I wont. Callisto Protocol misses every detail that makes a Horror or Action game work, and worst of all its NOT scary.

Number 1 being, this is NOT Dead Space, it may have the same look an atmosphere but it plays a bit different leading me to point #2. The combat is challenging and the first 30 minutes is very difficult. The games initial combat tutorial happens quiet quickly during a "cutscene' which can leave many players unsure if their inputs were accurate. I had my initial concerns about the game but after the first few engagements I found the rhythm to the game and I fell in love.

So let me break this down into a simple pro's and con's list .

    Pros
    - Atmosphere - The game is dripping with the Sci-Fi horror many of us came to love during the Dead Space era and oh boy is it here and its been dialed up a lot
    - Combat - The combat in Callisto Protocol is very unique in that instead of a straight shooter like Dead Space or a Brawler style combat like the Arkham games, Callisto strikes an interesting middle ground that has the player manage their resources mid combat. One on One engagements can easily be handled with simple dodge and attack patterns but when it comes to multi enemy engagements it becomes almost a puzzle that you are free to solve however you wish which goes like this: 3 enemies approaching, shoot the furthers one in the leg to stumble him, pull the closest one in and take him down quickly, look for the third threat, eliminate the staggered and then proceed with number 3. Its a very satisfying loop.
Sound Design - Just like its DNA was started in Dead Space it holds the same sound from that game, moments of eerie tension cut by distant screams or rumbles in the vents, weapons and impacts pack a depth to them that is sure to rumble most speakers, combine this with excellent voice acting and good use of the PS5's controller speaker and its a masterclass in how to keep people on their toes.
Visuals - Just look at it, she's perfect

    Cons.)

Exploration - All though there are branching paths much like being on the Ishimura in Dead Space most them end in a loop that sets you back to the main path which will have netted you some loot along the way, unfortunately most of the areas of Black Rock Prison look very similar to each other and there are plenty of corners and rooms devoid of any looting opportunities which is seems like a very large hole in the design.
Movement - As much as I like combat the movement in this game can be a massive hinderance to its enjoyment at times, the lack of a quick turn mechanic much like the resident evil games have had for over a decade now this game has no such thing which can lead to frustrating moments where you have just taken care of an enemy in front of you only to be killed by something you physically cannot turn fast enough to attack.

Honestly I'd like to give this game a higher score but I can see the games faults, had they put a little more thought into a few core mechanics it easily could have been a 9 or even possibly a 10. You may have noticed I've left the story out of my score as I have a feeling some will really enjoy it, others may not, it keeps you in the dark for a large majority of the game which can be a good thing, mystery and suspense are wonderful at times, but this time a little exposition could have gone a long way.

The Callisto Protocol on PS5. I am going to start off and say wow. This game is such a blast and I am so sad I already completed it. Before getting into it, I completed the game on Maximum Security and it took me roughly 10 hours.

    Pros:
The graphics: this game and its environment was beautiful. I loved observing everything around me as I walked around.

The scares: Although there aren't a large amount of jump scares that will actually get you, the ones that do are the most unexpected. The way the environment is set up and how tension is built is just such a great way to make you feel uneasy.

The Sound: The sound design was some of the best I have heard in a long time for video games. Hearing your enemies bones break when you hit them, how the guns sounds, how your enemies sound in general, and the ambience was impeccible.

The Characters: I liked the characters, for some reason I started to get attatched to them without knowing them very well and I felt for my own character when things weren't going his way.
The Combat: I absolutely loved the combat. Did it get repetitive? Yes. It was extremely satisfying though, I only wish they made the dodge mechanic an actual button. I loved bashing things, shooting them, and stomping their dead corpses. I just think it takes time to master and I loved it.

    The Cons:

The Story: The story is on the middle ground for me. I didn't totally hate it, but it also didn't have anything we've never seen in other survival horror games. (Suggestion: Really try to listen to all the audio logs, they add a lot to the immersion.)

The Checkpoint system: There are auto saves in a lot of spots and there are also manual saves. Manual saves are useless because they just take you back to the autosaved checkpoint 90% of the time. If you upgrade something, manual save, and then go to that save, you have to re-upgrade your gear. It was very odd.

The DLC block: Well, this has nothing to do with "death animation paywall", but I really really wanted to start a new game plus, but it is unfortunately coming with a free update that won't be coming out for a little while. Now that I have beat the game, there is nothing else to do until DLC drops and its kinda dissapointing.

    Overall:

I enjoyed my time here with The Callisto Protocol. I could not give it a 10 due to the cons I listed, but with how many positives I had for this game, I had to give respect where respect is due. I loved it and I wanna play more and more of it. You really just need to sit in the dark, put on some headphones, and enjoy the wonderful, yet punishing, game that is The Callisto Protocol.

Next review is: The Callisto Protocol Story DLC.

It’s frustrating, not to mention completely repetitive considering there isn’t a lot of enemy variety. The level design is boring as well. It’s completely linear which isn’t a totally bad thing, but besides some hazards they never do anything interesting with it. It doesn’t help that half the time you squeeze through corridors, crawling through vents, or climbing ladders. I will say though that the graphics and presentation are really great. The attention to is absolutely insane. I also love the atmosphere and vibe of the game. It does indeed remind me of Dead Space. The death animations are also really gory to the point where Japan had to ban the game from their country. That’s how you know it’s crazy violent. Now honestly this game would’ve been a 5/10, but what pisses me off the most is that the devs have the gall to leave the game on a cliffhanger for future DLC. You barely deserve the $70 and now you want extra $$$ to finish the story. Oh hell no. It’s not even that good of a story. It’s insanely predictable. Expand

the gameplay itself is very hit or miss, while the shooting plays well and I have no gripes, the hand to hand is very clunky and I find myself trying to shoot but he just hits instead when I'm pressing the trigger. they would have been better off mapping these controls differently to avoid these issues as that would have solved my gripes here.

story, it's just treading same ground as other games, nothing noteworthy and after completing it doesn't make me want to replay - I'll most likely forget the game - however... it does have some huge potential, so if they can really get a good writer on board, I genuinely think they have a great IP here.

Overall, it's a mixed bag - I love the little details in the game like the upgrade system and the world building, but the story and gameplay ruins it for me.

This game wants to be like Dead Space ... I didn't even like Dead Space that much.
It just feel cheap. Like a game that had a lot of good chances and ideas, but there is not really much adding together.

    Disappointing.

Absolutely intense experience from start to finish further bolstered by a weighty combat system, gorgeous graphics, and astounding sound design. A must play for any fan of horror.

Story: The game gives you a 1/4 teaspoon of story every chapter and does not keep you interested. The last chapter throws what seems like the whole plot at you, but since it was so poorly developed leading up to the last chapter, it does not leave me wanting more, just insulted. There are things about the plot that make 0 sense (if you pay attention to the story, you will understand why they do not make sense). There are pick ups to learn more about the various named albeit near irrelevant characters; half of which the audio recordings do not play anything (I assumed bugged?). The other half are filled with useless information. Not much to write about the story. I forgot about it, your protag keeps asking throughout: "What's going on" or "what happened" and it does not get answered until the last 15 minutes of the game.

Combat: Terrible if you are fighting more than 1 enemy. When fighting more than one, you cannot see your health bar nor your battery bar well. If you aim down the sights to catch a zoomed glimpse of your bars, 9 times out of ten you will miss your dodge and get hit. In order to "shoot the tentacles" when multiple enemies are around, you have to take a gamble: Risk getting hit by aiming at an enemy, or... Also, there really isn't an option to run away from an enemy once they find you. Turning your back will most likely get you stun/animation locked. The weapons are meh... This is a futuristic game with space ships and established colonies on a moon.... Why am I still using present day style guns... There are two guns that practically match each other, and 2 others match each other as well; no gun was unique.

Audio: The audio was a mixed bag for me. While yes, the environment sounds were done well, its the lack of uniqueness from the enemies what was troublesome. It was kinda difficult to figure out what was lurking based on the sounds as they all pretty much sound similar.

Graphics: The overall look of the game is very well done, though they do come with their issues. It seems the devs sacrificed a more interactive environment and chose a static scene. Example: Dead Space, you walk into various chairs or IV stands and they move out of your way. In this game, you get caught in their collision. Nothing moves when you make impact with it except for random small box containers. This is particularly frustrating and limits your sense of being in the moment especially during combat.

Gameplay: The gameplay is very linear and straightforward with no brain power really required. Your only puzzles are the occasional "fetch a keycard" or "fetch a gate fuse". 0 other puzzles. This is really disappointing especially with one of the items you pick up that is only used for combat; it had great potential for puzzles. The inventory management is abysmal and the worst feature of this game. You have to wait until you are half way done with the game to expand your inventory, and then the game throws everything at you to fill it to help you upgrade your gear. The sense of progression is terrible during the first half without this inventory upgrade. Also... NO STORAGE aside from your inventory. Forced animations by going too close to crevices is really frustrating especially when they are packed together in small areas with enemies around.

Overall: The first half of the game... starts off extremely overwhelming and over-the-top with random fire, subverting your expectations that this is a melee game, and a know-it-all NPC telling you exactly what to do non-stop. As you progress, expect every single room to constantly throw 3+ enemies at you. There is no build up to the horror roots this game was inspired by; you will be burnt out because of the consistent forced repetitive combat. "Oh you cleared this room out already for a 2nd time, well the third time will have even more!". Do not expect story to keep you engaged as it is mostly missing. I was very relieved the game was over when it was; I was so exhausted from the non-stop combat. 8-10 hour length.

The game is actually 7.8 for me. But I suggest you to hear me out.
If you liked dead space for environmental storytelling, it’s almost non present here. If you liked dead space for psychological moments it’s almost non present here either, it appears awkwardly in the middle of the game, then disappears till the very ending. Don’t recommend highest difficulty, medium is perfect. It’s fun to

Callisto Protocol is an awesome revival of the space horror genre. To start, the game does a great job with the overall presentation. For a game like this, which involves a lot of dark corridors with flashing lights, I really recommend turning off performance mode so you can get the ray tracing effects. The sound design is also another area the game excels in, especially with the ambient noises. The voice acting is good, but can be a bit cheesy at times. I think the sound design is a very great feature of this game as it really adds tension to the slower moments and really adds to the brutality during the action moments, it’s something you have to experience with headphones to get the full effect. This game has the best graphics I’ve ever seen, and the sound design is up there.

The gameplay was decent, but didn’t feel fully intuitive at times. I believe it felt a bit clunky because the controls felt “heavy”. Just all movement felt like it was in slow motion, but the action animations felt like they were sped up really fast. I also found the combat a little too simplistic for this day and age, but despite this, I was able to enjoy it. The biggest issue with the combat is that it works very well when facing one or two enemies, but toward the end of the game it becomes highly frustrating because the combat was not designed to face that many enemies. So it turns into a pseudo-stealth game. It’s not bad by any means, but hopefully the sequel addresses this. The game was a little more linear than I was expecting. I had to mentally switch my mentality from survival horror to action horror to really begin to appreciate what they were trying to do here. I enjoyed my time with the game. It doesn’t really do anything new, and outside of the presentation it doesn’t really do anything new to the formula, but it did a good job reviving the space horror genre prior to the arrival of the Dead Space remake. It’s not a GOTY contender, it’s not anything you’ll remember and want to revisit years to come, but it’s a fun ride. All in all, it’s a solid new game series, and I think there is huge potential for growth with future games.

I absolutely love this game. It's beautiful, scary, and engaging. It is a high-quality single-player and story-driven Sci-Fi horror. Such games are a rare species nowadays, and I hope there will be a sequel.

It's honestly kinda baffling to me why they focused so much on the melee combat when the shooting is really good when you get to do it

The game really shines in the latest parts where you have to use your weapons more, dismember them, use the grip to create space and shoot them more, traps, explosive etc The last parts of the game really encourage shooting since you can't really use

The last parts of the game really encourage shooting since you can't really use melee due to the insane amount of combat encounters and the amount of enemies swarming you, i really have no idea why they didn't just encourage shooting from the start, the stun baton really should've been a secondary weapon and not a focus, maybe use it for crowd control, unleashing electric discharge if enemies get to close, stunning them, crowd control with a large melee swing etc

This game really has potential, it's just needs more "game" It's really strange that with a game with solid shooting mechanics they instead let you walk around for upwards of 15 minutes without doing any combat whatsoever

It's a 8/10 for me, solid but kinda disappointing, i really hope they fix these things for the sequel or dlc or whatever, i see potential in it.

Looking forward for everything the developers will add in the future.

Repetitive survival horror that feels like a life sentence, The Callisto Protocol is as bereft of life as the harsh conditions of the moon on which it’s set. [Issue#23, p.70]

Callisto Protocol makes some mistakes, but in general computing the good wins by far. It is true that it is somewhat angry to see that something with so much potential has not been fully squeezed, but what it offers is already much more than most. We trust that combat system that we have loved and its setting to make the game worthwhile and we would love to see a second installment.

A visually beautiful sci-fi experience which, surprisingly, doesn’t resort to simply cloning Dead Space. The difficulty and the fear factor both don’t reach the heights I’d expect, however. A shame! It could have been extraordinary.
