For me, the Callisto Protocol is the biggest disappointment of this year. I really wanted to love this game, but I just can't. The gameplay is monotonous and boring, the combat system frustrating, the story clichéd and flat. The only thing that is somewhat worthwhile is the graphics and atmosphere. If you insist on buying it, wait for a deep sale.

Maybe high-level wise there are some similarities to Dead Space, I do not consider it a disadvantage. Hidetako is making and selling the same game for more than a decade and no one complaints. Thus, I do not see it as an argument.
This a great cinematically based horror with emphasis put on action. Not as scary (forr me) as Alien Isolation (which I see as the scariest game I ever played),

I dont sign EULA's for single player games. this one is a bit more aggressive than others anyway, why would they want to monitor my battery life? seems like a drag to my internet, I dont need. A single player game i wasnt going to stream, should have the option to disagree and still play the game. Boycott

So here's the deal, if you liked DeadSpace, you'll like this game. If your numb to jump scares, like I am, it'll be like a "Hardcore Action Adventure game"... as a gamer I've seen it all, & killed it all, so.. "horror survival' which is what this game falls under..

Well its not really "horror" to me.. its more like "annoying gimped action adventure experience"..

Anyways, I got side tracked. The game is very atmospheric, & story driven. It really is a solid experience from that perspective. It does have things that annoy me though as a player.

For instance, I got stuck on the "tram mission" hardcore, even though I prepared, & figured on what was going to happen. It was just "death loop" OVER & OVER & OVER.. but up until that point, things had been pretty smooth sailing. I'd prepared as well as I could have.

Inventory management is a pain in the butt for WAY TOO LONG in the game.

Anyways, if you want something that's a homage to dead space, & good story telling, for the most part.

Highly recommend checking this out! It's got its "quirks" but overall a very solid experience.

The story is terrible. Why does this cost more than the PS4 version? There are many masked loading screens with those ventilation shafts. $70 and it doesn't utilize the strength of the PS5. It's not like this game has much to load anyway, seeing it's just corridor after corridor. The physics are a joke. The level design is terrible with lack of enemy variety.

For goodness sake, why are there still developers in 2022 not allowing me to skip cutscenes? Enough already. I don't want to watch a stupid movie about outer space. I just want to punch monsters. I'm getting real sick and tired of unskippable cutscenes. It's as if these video game directors failed to make it to Hollywood and got bullied for their interests in astronomy, norse mythology, WWII and all of that stupid bookworm trash, so now they want to take out their frustration on gamers. Whatever personal problems you developers have, go and sort them out. But don't you dare drag me down that rabbit hole, because now you're starting to make it personal with me. It's one thing to make a horrible game, but it's 100 percent inexcusible to not allow me to skip cutscenes in a AAA game. I paid $70 so I should be able to skip whenever I want.

As I mentioned earlier, there's no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. The developers were too cheap and lazy to include multiplayer. The only good thing in this game is graphics, but the graphics sacrificed the gameplay and multiplayer. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

Furthermore - the uninteresting, almost nonexistent story line plays out primarily in audio recordings that can only be listened to while stationary, staring at your HUD. I deleted it from my console out of frustration at the second boss encounter after reducing the difficulty to easy and still dying over and over again. I didn’t give it a zero because the visuals are truly stunning, they’re just impossible to appreciate with all of the other issues this game has. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good game that could be great. First of all I did not experience any issues on Quality mode on PS5 all works great. The graphic is really impressive, well done, lightning and shadow are on point. Sound impressive and game constantly tries to keep you on edge with sounds. Horror....hmm not that much horror here, cheap jump scares here and there, gory yes but that is it, more on the disgusting side than on horror itself. The gameplay is a mix, you can fill the punch with weapons or baton. The dogging system is hit-and-miss, off-screen indicators are non-existent and dogging takes over so you are unable to move so some encounters could get hectic and chaotic. So combat is good and dogging is bad thing here. Story...what story? The game is short but sweet, at least for me, since I enjoy graphics and action here. Expected horror and left disappointed, story hungry, and sometimes frustrated with dodging. All in all solid 8 (expected 10 from my hype and all the trailers) and I can recommend this as good action Sci Fi game that could be great Horror Sci Fi experience. Expand

It would be impossible to not draw comparisons to Dead Space as this game is most definitely it's spiritual successor, as you're walking around stomping on boxes and dismembering limbs it gives you a good hit of nostalgia, but all the while I felt there was just something missing.

The environments, though absolutely stunning, don't feel quite as purposeful or unique as in dead space, at points I had to wonder "Why on earth would they have these big corridors full of endless pipes, what on earth are these for?". This issue kinda extends to the enemy types too, they're pretty limited and you don't have those moments where a giant tentacle is dragging you down an airvent.

A lot of people complain about the difficulty, and when I started out I was wondering if I could actually complete this game, but combat against standard enemies does get easier. With that said some of the boss encounters are frustrating as hell and I found myself dying just because I tried to dodge out of the way and got stuck in a corner. I don't mind a challenge, but playing the same arena a dozen or more times just because you walked into an unassuming area without enough ammo or health is pretty frustrating.

Presentation here is a 10, I played in performance mode because i'm not a savage, the audio is great (Though I hit a few really strange issues through my headphones where there seemed to be just too much going on and it got fuzzy).

The story is good, I just for some reason wasn't on the edge of my seat most of the time, ultimately the twist is painfully predictable from the get go.

I enjoyed it, I'm not paying such a huge amount for the season pass unless that extra content turns out to be more than a cash grab.

The "bossfights" are beyond stupid, theres nothing intelligent about them and itll have you run shoot, reload and repeat - if you miss once the boss will one shot you and you get to start over.
Theres no exploration at all, its all just one loooooooong route you have to follow through the game, with next to no other options than to follow the main route.
The game has 3 types of guns, 2 of them have 2 variations, but ultimately the same gun, the upgrades for these guns are cheap and lazy, more ammo, less sway and more damage - theres nothing interesting about it, and its copy pasted across all 3 weapon types.
You get armor a few chapters in, and thats it - it never gets upgraded or changed in any way.
The graphics, sound and locations are great and ultimately its a damn shame that the rest of the game comes off so lazy and rushed.

I found the melee combat system to be so frustrating- ended up setting auto dodge and auto melee up to save from getting too stressed out. The gunplay feels slow and clunky with slow reloads and difficult to switch between weapons in the heat of battle - often it feels like a modern resident evil title in a sci fi / space wrapper.

The story was the weakest element with standard horror fare and little to connect the characters to the world in a truly meaningful moving way. However the fidelity of the characters is so striking it allowed me to accept the sequences for what they were falling into a sort of 'b' movie atmosphere.

Then the frustration kicked in as the mechanics felt counterintuative at first. He moves slowly, there's no quick-turn, the gun swapping is slow, the dodge is weird, cheap deaths, etc.

But there was something there that made me want to push on.

And then it all fell into place. At some point it all clicked and felt right. I got my head around the mechanics and what the gameplay was. From there I was pinging off my head with adrenaline. Each new area felt intense, and the more I jacked up my guns and gear the more satisfying it felt. Everything has a weight to it (reminded me of Joel in The Last of Us 1), and therefore is really satisfying to pull off.

The sound design and execution is literally the best I've ever heard in a game (I noticed in the credits it's done by Skywalker Sound, so it's no wonder). The visuals are insane and dripping with tension and atmosphere. The story is serviceable, but comes home with some interesting stuff at the end which definitely makes you want more.

Overall I ending up really enjoying it and have finished it 4 times already, trying different play styles on each run, and also getting the Platinum. My only gripe in the end is that it didn't launch with New Game Plus.

    Great experience.

The good things is the graphics and the start of the game. But the combat is outdated, the pace is slow, leaning pretty hard on what Dead Space did in a lot of things, lacking cool gear, and the few hulk-bosses and ending is just outright bad.

Welcome to the state of AAA games. Releasing an unfinished product for 70/80$ with basic features like New Game+ and Hardcore mode aren't ready at launch, and other features like extra death animations and skins being locked behind a paywall and releasing months later.

The Callisto Protocol simply takes advantage of Dead Space and other successful survival horror games to hype itself up.

This game is, in my opinion, a bad uninspiring copy of Dead Space. And although it is marketed as a survival horror game, it barely has any elements to justify that.

    - Very linear hold W or forward design to finish the game. No actual exploration whatsoever.
    - None to very light survival horror elements that don't blend well with the game's pace nor combat; for instance, the game applies slow animations on healing and other actions, yet it throws bunch of enemies at you where the game simply becomes a brawler rather than a survival horror game. It feels that the game is struggling to identify itself as a survival horror game because it also wants to be like Doom. Another example: the stomp mechanic in Dead Space was used to preserve ammo to finish off enemies. Here in Callisto Protocol, they allow you to stomp enemies but award you ammo for it, completely nullifying the survival horror aspect of it.
    - The combat is fundamentally flawed.
    - Death animations are cool however they have no smooth transition. They feel awkward when they happen during combat, especially that you already take damage from enemies you can't look at or evade thanks to the awfully designed combat. You'll also take little damage even if you dodge (right or left won't matter). You also can't skip death animations, so if you keep dying due to the frustrating combat system, then you'll have to watch the long death animation every time. A complete mess.
    - Very cheap poorly paced jump scares and the game never stops repeating them.
    - No puzzles at all.
    - The game presents no significant new ideas throughout its linearity to refresh its pace.
    - Pretty uninteresting story.

    + Graphics and sound design.

Verdict: wait for a sale if you like a brawler horror game, skip if you're into actual survival horror games.

Or replayed the old ones. First off. This game isn’t scary. Relies too heavily on Jump scares. I’f you can call them that. The combat system. Totally broken. No quick turn. Sprint is a meandering jog. Reloading takes forever. Switching weapons in mid combat does an animation that takes seconds to complete and can be interrupted. So if you run out of ammo. You’re done. Especially when surrounded by multiple enemies. And healing with an injector. Takes 5 seconds to complete. Completely useless in combat. Also releasing so slow it’s borderline idiotic. That final boss fight was the most unenjoyable broken fight of recent memory. If you have low health for the second phase. You’re done. You can try running around the exploding enemies and projectiles but he runs like an invalid. It’s ridiculous. And the story is rip off sci fi **** Worst money I have spent on a game In a long time. The pros are the graphics & atmosphere are fantastic but unfortunately that's about it. The story is thin & lame, the characters are forgettable, dull & boring & the combat is the worst. They encourage close combat to which is fine except & have implemented a dodge mechanic and opt for using the left analog stick & the player will move it left or right to avoid attacks, but which is not effective during intense combat with multiple enemies. The use of a button would have been more practical. Instead of using the D pad or a button to switch or to rotate through your weapon selection, you use the right D pad & then you can scroll through your weapon selection. Again, it's very clumsy & awkward & you can easily choose a weapon with no ammo by accident leaving you open for attacks. The reloading animation of a weapon is ridiculously slow, so if your hit by an enemy during that time you will not have done it. You have health injection gun that's used for low health but here again the animation is sooooo slow that you will not complete increasing your health if you're hit by an enemy. They start you off with only six slots for your inventory but no storage box for stashing extra items, so you're limited on item you can carry & unable to pick up extra due a full inventory. Also, a big negative is that the game is nowhere scary but rather creepier & jump scares becomes repetitive, predictable, & boring. Expand

The combat system is actually pretty fun once you get used to it, but it's interesting choice and oddly reminds me of the system in Silent Hill Homecoming. It's not as weirdly frustrating as the system in that game, but there's similarities. The biggest gripe I have is that there's no real mechanics/options given to the player for dealing with enemies coming in from all directions. This can lead to some frustrating encounters in the latter half of the game when enemies are thrown at you in waves. This shift in the game really means there should have at least been a quick turn around mechanic of some kind. There are a few boss fights in the latter half of the game that are especially frustrating for this reason where you are asked to pinpoint smaller enemies with guns and engage the boss in melee combat at the same time. Your character's movement speed isn't fast enough to deal with this effectively. It can be done but it isn't exactly fun. Then there's the weapon selection system. I found myself fumbling through the system trying to select a gun that actually has ammo only for it to cancel back to the gun without ammo. This, I believe, is because the gun changes all require an animation that shows Jacob switch out the gun on the same 'mount.' It becomes this game where you're dodging incoming enemy attacks while you're fumbling through the weapon selection menu trying to find out why you keep pulling out guns, or the same gun, without any ammo. The weapon quick selection mechanic seemed weirdly worthless to me when the animations take so long you kinda just end up with a gun in hand that might not be appropriate for the combat situation you're in.

These moments kind of kill the thrills of what is otherwise a really good and great looking game. All of that said, I still really enjoyed The Callisto Protocol andI think there's a lot going on here that could turn into a really good franchise if some of these gripes don't tank it before it gets off the ground.

As the game progresses you get used to the dodging and timing attacks, but the time it takes you to do a melee attack you’re being murdered from behind or by the side. And healing yourself mid fight? Forget about it. It takes your character that long to get a medic kit ready that even if your enemy is at the other end of the room, they’ll be right next to you before you even start the healing process. Everything else about the game is great but the awful combat is what really lets it down. Expand

(spoiler alert) I have yet to get pass the room where you're powering something up and there's a big grinding machine and you have to fight hordes of enemies until the thing powers up.(end of spoiler alert) This is in the first quarter of the game. This section of the game really highlights how bad the combat really is. I really do not understand why the Dev team could not assign blocking and dodging to a button. You have to block or dodge by holding the left, right or back on your controller. If there's more than one enemy, forget it. If you want to use your GRP, try to block and then use your baton, the control scheme will not allow you to do this in a fluidly. I am very disappointed in this game. The control scheme is very poor for a game that relies on melee combat. Do not waste the energy or time. You have been officially forewarned. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an awful game. Do yourself a favour and wait for Dead Space Remake to drop next month. My friend asked me what was wrong with it and I just spilled every enraged thought I had about the game, it was too painful to write it out again so please see below my thoughts on this garbage fire. The creator of this game has tried so hard to peddle this **** so hard to convince people it’s a scary game, that the gore will horrify you. It’s weak, start to finish, it’s **** weak. “Yeah… where to start bud… for starters, never played a horror game with absolutely no horror in it, other than the horrific fact that I wasted money on it. Seriously, not once was there even tension. They have these little bugs that jump out at you every so often when you open a chest, never once scared me, just **** me off because no matter how quickly you hammer triangle it will still take away health, they tend to be in chests that have 35 health, so you end up just opening a chest to replace the health that **** just sucked away. They have the poor man’s version of ‘clickers’ yet they’re so much ****ter than clickers that they offer 0 challenge, they just slow the whole game down and seem to have been added as a veiled attempt at extending the play time of the game. The combat system is genuinely **** awful. Like absolutely **** awful. The game is basically a dodge simulator. So it’s mainly a close combat game, where you use that pole thing to beat enemies but you basically have to dodge them one to three times before a window opens for you to hit them three times, rinse and repeat. The thing is, if you have more than one enemy around you, as soon as the canned animation of you killing the one guy ends, the next enemy sucker punches you, this happens because the camera is so zoomed in over your shoulder and **** slow that you can’t even see the **** coming, so don’t have time to dodge. Add to that, the fact that it introduces this mechanic where enemies can mutate to become stronger when you start to damage them. The idea is that you shoot these tentacles that sprout before it has a chance to transform, the problem is, due to the really **** **** camera, you very, very rarely get the chance to shoot the tentacles, you pretty much only get to when they’re the only enemy you’re fighting, this means that without fail, most enemies mutate which is just **** painful because it just doubles the length of each fight, doesn’t make it harder, just doubles the length of it. They use the same boss fight three times, this is again, just dodge, dodge shoot, shoot, before a window to melee attack it, problem is, reloading or changing weapon is so **** cumbersome that sometimes you get tagged by this **** and guess what… it’s one hit kill. At one point it then adds other enemies as well as this guy so trying to do it all while they can just one hit kill you. I completed the game, took me about 8 hours, yet the game just felt like it was dragging. The same boss fight three times is lazy. The same four enemy types. The same, eye rolling bugs jumping out at you. The same squeezing through tight gaps to load the next section. The ending is just a sequel bait. The death animations are also **** boring, you can’t skip them, they’re drawn out and I didn’t find them horrific as the creator of the game thought they were. The only good thing I can say is it’s a gorgeous game and the acting is really **** good. It’s awful.” Expand

If you would like to experience another great title with a horror component on your console, you should pick up "The Callisto Protocol". It's definitely worth it! Expand

This game totally took me by surprise. It’s got story, atmosphere and gameplay. Not full of annoying puzzles and unique dodge function. Well worth playing. Survival Horror isn’t even my genre! BANGER!!!

It's like eating a cookie thinking it has chocolate chips but it's raisins.
It's very nice but the gameplay is horrible. the puzzles are repetitive.
    Disappointment of the year.
    10 hours of infamous gameplay.
79 euros to waste for an insufferable movie full of bugs on ps5!
Worst of all is that they want to sell us the ending as a DLC!!!!!!

100% completion. The combat in this game is fun if you’re into melee combat but other than that I’m not impressed. The story is pretty week and the game feels repetitive at times also there is a few glitches with the biggest one being the maximum security difficulty trophy doesn’t unlock this is the only one I need for platinum. Not impressed with this game I would say wait for a sale as it’s not worth the $70 in my opinion Expand

Big fan of Dead Space so I thought this would end up being the spiritual successor and maybe a game to push the survival horror genre further. Boy, was I wrong. It’s just not fun to play. Janky combat mechanics lead to frustrating encounters when there’s more than two enemies on the screen. Don’t even get me started on the dodge mechanic. Wish I could get a refund.

Digno sucesor de Dead Space. Tiene algunas cosillas que deberían de arreglar, pero nada importante. La historia de ciencia ficción y terror atrapa rápido. El apartado visual es brutal y el gameplay sencillo y muy bueno.

Not sure what the reviewers have against the game, I went in expecting a single player linear sci fi horror experience and that’s exactly what I got. It’s a tense gory trip into a hellish nightmare and I loved every minute. Ran perfectly on the ps5 and looks stunning. Is it game of the year ? No but does every game need to be ? If you like this kinda thing ie dead space / alien isolation / resident evil you’ll love it. Don’t be put off by the click bait dross like Jim sterling or the ‘haven’t be relevant since the 2000’s’ Gamespots of this world. If this is your jam then you’ll be satisfactorily entertained Expand

I love atmospheric games, and this is a bright representative! Today it is fashionable to criticize and you can always find fault. Passed about 40% of the game and today I'm 100% satisfied On PS5, the optimization is normal, I play in 60 fps mode

Repetitive survival horror that feels like a life sentence, The Callisto Protocol is as bereft of life as the harsh conditions of the moon on which it’s set. [Issue#23, p.70]

Callisto Protocol makes some mistakes, but in general computing the good wins by far. It is true that it is somewhat angry to see that something with so much potential has not been fully squeezed, but what it offers is already much more than most. We trust that combat system that we have loved and its setting to make the game worthwhile and we would love to see a second installment.

A visually beautiful sci-fi experience which, surprisingly, doesn’t resort to simply cloning Dead Space. The difficulty and the fear factor both don’t reach the heights I’d expect, however. A shame! It could have been extraordinary.
