First main series sonic team game since forces. 5 years ago, and it's worth the wait EASILY. Super fun gameplay, great combat and bosses, the story was great, visuals amazing, cyberspace was surprisingly fun, music was phenomenal, and the titan boss fights were HYPE. The only thing I'd say was underwhelming was the final boss but other than that, amazing game. You did good sonic team

It's as janky as the Sonic adventures on the Dreamcast and that's ok. Those games were amazing anyway and so is Sonic Frontiers. This game does not do well with regards to first impressions. But more than makes up for it with a little patience.

I have a lot of nitpicks and complaints but the game is still incredibly fun. Sonic feels great to control, the islands (for the most part) are a blast to explore, and the dialogue is a huge step up from previous games. Overall it's a good first step in a new direction, and just a fun time in general, but they need to improve upon it heavily to keep fans interested, Make the next game a lot more difficult, make it more consistently fun, make the story more engaging, and give us more post game content after completing the main campaign. This game tries alot of new things for the Sonic franchies and hits it out of the park on most. The story is more grounded, the music as always is excellent, and the gameplay is new and refreshing. However there are some issues with janky controls from time to time but the game flows very smoothly most of the time.

Absolutely phenomenal game from start to finish. Sonic is back and better than ever. After years of mediocre and disappointing 3D sonic games we have one that is very fun and brings the whole series together with a story that newcomers might be a little confused about but a love letter to sonic fans. I cannot wait for what the future holds for later games in the franchise.

If you have a ps5, go play this game. Its so much fun and the story is great to, it's not perfect (almost btw) but it's very fun, only criticism is that the final boss is underwhelming. Speaking of bosses, they have to make an update to make the bosses replayable, its so much fun. So yea go buy the game if you have a ps5.

Although it's not without it's issues, Sega really did mean when they said learned from their mistakes. Now I myself was born in the late 2000's but I have played (And completed) the older Adventure games. And as a member of the Sonic community this game is an A rank game. It sucks it's not going to get nominated for best soundtrack (It probably would've won). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am very pleasantly surprised by Sonic Forntiers. After Forces and the gameplay trailers I already assumed the worst, but no! Sonic is great to control and the graphics are okay.
In terms of gameplay, it is similar to the parts before, you have different levels that you can choose, here again with different ranks (S, A, B, C) The open worlds are fun to explore and also the combat system is well implemented and allows good combinations. The story was rather unexciting, but the interactions with the characters captured their charm and personalities well.
What is best about the game though are the boss fights and music. Never before has the gameplay of Super Sonic been so good. It feels great to fly towards the enemy and then knock them down with a combo. What makes it even better is the game's soundtrack, which is fabulous as always, especially the songs from the boss fights.
In general, it is a must title for every Sonic fan, you can only hope that Sega hears the fans this time and the next title is just as good if not better!

Lo importante es correr con Sonic en un espacio gigante que funciona increiblemente bien. Muy recomendado Expand

The world, lore and story are the most fleshed out and interesting we've seen in a Sonic game in almost 2 decades. It's so nice to have a proper expansion on the lore the fandom holds so dear.

The music... Oh my god the music. Yes.

    Really fantastic time. Definitely recommend.

The ending left a bit to be desired. It feels like they ran out of budget/time towards the end, but it's forgivable cause of just how fun the core experience is. Hopefully we'll get an expansion or DLC down the road or something. Would love that.

Also needs a hardcore difficulty mode.

The best Sonic game in a decade. Fun open zone gameplay always keeps you engaged. While the game has some issues in the bosses, the last act looking the same as Kronos, and mediocre cyberspace it is still a very fun time.

Anyways Sonic Frontiers is an amazing first step for the franchise and I can't wait for what the future has to old for the series!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A phenomenal Sonic game. (No spoilers) So much to explore, so many enemies to fight, so many collectibles, so much to do! This game finally feels like Sonic as a game franchise evolving. The islands are fun to explore and each have some uniqueness to them in terms of how they were designed. The combat is fast-paced enough and feels enjoyable to use with the combos and Phantom Rush, so I never got tired of it. Sonic himself starts out quite slow, but as you level his speed up, you'll notice just how fast he can traverse around the islands. That was honestly a majority of the fun I had; just blasting around the islands as fast as I could go exploring for memory tokens. Sonic controls amazing as well, although you can customize certain aspects of his movements in the settings.

The story is the best we've gotten in a Sonic game since Unleashed, by far. Lots of world building, lore explaining, and character building moments that are fun to watch. The humor is MASSIVELY improved as well (not that that's difficult). The collectibles were fun to gather for the most part, I just wish the seeds were more abundant.

The boss fights were the game's highlight for me. Each Titan is so unique and fun to fight, they felt like what would be final bosses of previous Sonic games. The soundtracks that play during those fights is also exhilarating.

My main issues with the game and the reason I gave an 8, not a 10, are as follows:
    1. The pop-in for platforms and grind rails is very noticeable. It's especially bad later in the game, the faster you go.
    2. The Fishing minigame is too overpowered (super op once you reach the final island), because sometimes you can level up skills faster by fishing than you can exploring the Islands and defeating foes, which feels very wrong. This is caused by how cheap the items in the fishing shop are. Fishing mostly fine in the first Islands, but for the final island, you are allowed to buy EVERYTHING you need to reach max levels. Fishing should not benefit you more than exploring.
    3. The skill tree. It is VERY easy to max the skill tree, as I had spent all my skill points possible by the end of Ares Island. One you do unlock all your skills, your skill points become nothing other than an ever-increasing number. The skill tree itself is oddly small, with the skills themselves being a little to cheap to purchase.
    4. SPOILERS [My biggest complaint by FAR. The true final boss. By playing in hard mode, and defeating all titans, you then face the game's true final boss. "The End". Wow. It's awful. Instead of facing a final foe that puts ALL of your learned skills and abilities you learned throughout the game to the test, you instead face a space boulder and play a bare-bones top down space-shooter. The same one you only played 3 times prior throughout the entire game. It can be difficult getting the hang of it too, with all the projectiles and the switching light to dark mechanic. So, of course, not a single checkpoint throughout the entire fight. It's not fun. The best part of the true final boss, is when the space shooter stops, and you must do a few QTE's as Super Sonic.]

Overall, the ending might not be the best, and certain aspects are balanced very well, as a whole Sonic Frontiers is a great Sonic game with lots of enjoyment to be had. I look forward to more Sonic games with open-zone, and I do hope Frontiers get DLC. With a final time of 27 hours, Sonic Frontiers is my second favorite 3D Sonic game.

Fortunately, it was. Despite many technical shortcomings, I really liked the game. It's the first open worlds in years I truly managed to enjoy, mostly because it's a platform-focused open world. Going around with Sonic, collecting stuff and solving puzzles has been a fun experience.

I also appreciated the short levels a lot more compared to Forces. These felt way more interesting, especially visually speaking, I only wish these linear stages could be a bit longer.

The boss battles are a hype train, the music choice for them is incredibly fitting, I wish there were more of these.

    Bad-
A general degree of jank and lack of polish; extremely bad pop-in, and art style that can often feel chaotic; very varying quality when it comes to all the various things the game has you do; the linear Cyber Space levels are really underwhelming.

    Thoughts-
There is a lot wrong with Sonic Frontiers, but the things it does right are the ones that matter the most. And it does them just right enough to keep you hooked, and let you truly be drawn in by the sheer brilliance of its core concept. There are also, absolutely, sustained flashes of brilliance in the game’s design, with the open world in particular being an inspired take on Sonic platforming. And more than anything else, it’s just fun to spend time in this game and immerse yourself in it. Yes, Sonic Frontiers isn’t perfect, and it does have a lot of ground to cover in the hopefully inevitable follow-up. But goodness, to me, the things it does right are the ones that will stick with me, and the game’s earnest sense of ambition, and the surprising degree to which it follows through on it, make it a great experience that is, inarguably, some of the best time I have ever had with the Sonic franchise.

It has a great story, fun open zones with lots to do, Cyberspace while very flawed is still fun imo, fantastic combat, and it has the best boss battles in the series. The open zone gameplay feels really nice to play with the gameplay loop of traversing the world, fight enemies and mini bosses to get portal gears in order to go to cyberspace to get vault keys in order to get the chaos emerald. The structure works really well that I can't really describe it properly. If you are a fan of collectathons then you will love this. For the story, you collect memory tokons in order to talk to the character who is trapped within cyberspace on each island. The dialogue has gotta be the best in the series since Black Knight and I enjoyed the call backs to previous games in order to feel like everything is connected and takes place within Sonic's world. The boss fights with Super Sonic also one of the best, if not, the best boss fights in the franchise. Being able to use the combat for Super Sonic while fighting these Evangelion type mechs with metalcore music playing sounds so good man. Another thing I forgot to mention is the cyberspace levels. When I first played them, I thought they were alright but as time went on, I really like them. The controls are solid, music banging, and the tech like magnet dashing makes these levels amazing to speedrun and to beat your time in. Gotta say the biggest highlight of this game gotta be its music. Top 5 Sonic soundtrack in my book. I love everything from the somber, melancholic tone of the open zone music, to the EDM of cyberspace, to the metalcore of the titan boss fights, and to the orchestra of BGM when watching cutscenes. I could go on for hours on why I love this game but I do have some gripes like the pop in, Sonic feels like he's glued to the terrian (power boost skips using tricks makes up for it alongside rail jumping), Technical issues alongside a little jank but it won't affect the gameplay that much if at all, and the true final boss being a little underwhelming (even tho I still enjoyed it) Overall this game is definetly worth picking up. It's even on sale the time I am typing this so pick it up. Score: 8.5/10 but I'll give it a 9 since metacritic doesn't do decimals. Expand

The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.

-The gameplay couldn't be better, sonic in the platforming moments is no longer as slippery as in previous installments and it feels really good, the combat is entertaining and I like how it evolves becoming complex little by little.

-Level design, the open world design is entertaining and effective. Personally the world seems to me a mixture of the one of zelda botw but adapted to sonic and elements of the saga.

-Story: I haven't finished it but I can tell you that when the moment is serious the characters act according to their personality and not according to the personality of a clown like in forces for example.

    BAD POINTS
-Popping is present and noticeable, not as much as in the trailers but it's there even with the graphics at MAX. This could be solved with an option to adjust the draw distance.

    7. I didn't like that they reuse the grass theme for the last 2 islands 8.the game ran very well, only issue I had was the pop in of objects 9. This game is very fun to play and has great story and I really like speedeunning the cyberspace stages evan though the controls in cyberspace is bad
    10. I also didn't like that there was only 4 themes for cyberspace and I also didn't like it was the same themes of green hill, chemical plant and sky sanctuary, I want more original themes and more original level layout
    11. I give this game a 8 because I really enjoy the story and the open world exploring and fighting mini bosses and enemies and I sometimes like cyberspace when it had sometimes cool stages or when I was trying to speedrun

While the game has its rough edges, specially in the technical deparment, the game is clearly a very good direction for Sonic Games, I always thought that Cyberspace would be the thing I like the most and for my surprise, it isnt. Hope we get fixes for popping and a boss fight select to replay those epic fights. Expand

The sonic series is taken in a bold new direction in this fresh open-zone title! The game is a solid 7.5/10 for me. It feels vast with a level of spectacle we've not seen since Sonic Unleashed. The boss battles are epic with a soundtrack that goes hard. I wish there was a little more polish. The cyberspace levels are too clunky and slow to control sadly. I wanted to see how I felt after playing for 5 minutes. That 5 minutes turned into 3 hours and I still had a hard time putting down the controller. It definitely feels like an experiment. Some ideas are well executed and others are a bit jarring/out of place. Specifically, the cyber space levels. The re-imaging of these 2D levels look stunning. But the gameplay for these sections do not stick the landing. I wish that when it comes to the classic levels, they would go a completely different route and have the “Sonic Mania” team design them from the ground up. “Mario Odyssey” executed this idea the best and they laid out a blu-print for it. That being one of my few complaints, I cannot wait to see how future “Sonic” games flourish from the foundation that “Sonic Frontiers” has built. Okay, time to pick back up my controller and… go fast. Expand

Another problem is the constant popping of the game, but I guess this can be fixed in future updates of the game. However the best sonic game in the last 10 years, it was enjoyable and expands many things of the lore, I like that they have developed the personality of sonic in this game, a more serious tone and committed to his role as a hero. I hope this game will serve as an example for sega's next plans. Expand

Sonic Frontiers feels like a desperate breath of fresh air into the series.

It is not perfect by any means - cyberspace levels are hit or miss and some are genuinely AWFUL to go through and S rank (3-7 lmao), pop in is an issue though it's not a big deal to me, and there are a few minor bugs that I have encountered only twice in my 15 hours of playtime so far. However, everything else

However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

P.S. The soundtrack is FIRE and they got Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on it. 100/10 banger OST.

Great hybrid of the boost/adventure formula! The open zone concept becomes so much more clearer when you play the game yourself. Story is amazing with phenomenal writing. Gameplay feels slick and tight- if slightly janky.

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
