The openzone is very well designed. You don't feel bored while running through the field because there's always something to check out.

This game is really good and funny! Grafic is good, gameplay and battle system is fun and fluid, the control and movement of sonic is fluid and good. Furthermore the music is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard! The only critic from my site is, the pop in of Plattforms on the screen. Please, give the game a chance, it is actully a really good game!

Just finished the game 100% The game itself was fun and for the first open zone game for the sonic franchise I do hope sega learns from this and creates a solid series from these machanics. Some of main issues i had from this game was the momentum and cyber missions. Other than that its been an solid experience. The battles with the titans are fun and music and sound tracks rock in this game. Expand

I played all of Sonic Frontiers and it was absolutely amazing everything about this was perfect the open zones was a great transition for the newest generation for consoles the option to change how sonic moves is great and the cyberspace is a bit slow but it was fun trying to get all the challenges done and the super sonic fights were amazing and the soundtrack and fighting is perfect the only thing that's preventing me to put it a 10 is because of the end of the game and going against the true final boss and beating the game isn't that fulfilling but this is definitely the next step for sonic and might be my favorite sonic game but that's all this is your boi ANDREW_BLUE over and out Expand

Sonic Frontiers is a pretty good game. Its rough around the edges in many areas, constantly reusing Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant, and the narrative while good, couldve been a bit more involving. Overall though, I walked away being content that I was finally given the type of game I waited 14 years for.

This really is the best Sonic game since Rush, bar none. It's been a long, painful decade of SEGA learning the wrong lessons from unpleasable people, but this game established once and for all that the "Meta Era" is behind us.

Sonic's a blast to control, the level design in both the open zones and cyberspace levels (for the most part) is immaculate, the boss fights are AMAZING, and the story, while not the series' best, is certainly a step in the right direction for how unapologetic it is. Getting Ian Flynn to write the dialogue was a brilliant move, and I can only hope that future games expand his role even further.

It's the most unrepentantly Sonic game we've had in nearly two decades, and if that doesn't sound like a compliment to you, then you're not who this series is for and no amount of appeasement for the likes of you will be satisfactory (as, clearly, 10 years of it have proven not to be enough), and what this game means to me is that SEGA is finally beginning to understand that. Sonic's future hasn't looked this bright since I was in elementary school.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just gonna say it here: The game isn't perfect. Sometimes the gameplay is a bit janky, especially on some of the mini-bosses. Cyberspace is a bit weak but nonetheless fun. However, the "true" final boss is a bit underwhelming when you compare it to the other bosses.

However, the gameplay is really fun, the combat is satisfying, the music is a banger, and the story is really good at tying in games of the past, from the beginnings of Sonic to the Dreamcast Era, through into the Dark Ages and the controversial Meta era. Ian Flynn knew what he was doing, and I appreciate that.

I hope the game will be a good basis for future games and is not discarded like other games in the past. I do also hope for some DLC or a sequel in the future to improve some of the worse-off aspects of the game. Open-zone is a new Sonic style that I hope to see continue, and I also hope that Sage gets to return and continue to be an interesting new character.

All Sonic needs now is a greater budget than before and more people to help work on future games. If Sega doesn't do that, they are missing out on what could be Sonic's greater potential.

I grew up loving Sonic, but I did not grow up with Sonic games. I was first exposed to some random Archie comic I found at a department store, and then I avidly watched Sonic X, played as him nonstop in Brawl, and consumed an unhealthy amount of fan-made sprite animations on Youtube. This game has quadrupled my love for this stupid blue hedgehog.

It's definitely not perfect (nothing is but you know what I mean) but it is such a huge leap in the right direction that at times it can feel like it is. The disparity between this game and some of Sonic's lower points is incredible. The story is fantastic (thank you Ian Flynn), the combat is fun and satisfying (turn autocombo off) and the exploration makes me fully trust Sonic Team with an Adventure remake. The controls are tight, and can be customized to perfection. I do have some gripes. The Cyberspace levels are genuinely awful to control. It's not that the open-world controls don't translate well, it's just that they control completely differently and Much worse. It's so slow. I found myself skipping Cyberspace whenever possible, which is a shame because I am a fan of the boost games.
While I did love the open world's, I do still wish there was a little more to do in them. Not really the end of the world but some more collectables would've been nice.

This game rocks tho. I sincerely hope the franchise continues in this exact direction. Also the bosses are **** insane and the music bumps please buy this game

The cyberspace stages are the perfect way to break up the open zone gameplay and sonic back to his roots with fun well designed linear stages all with multiple challenges to tackle. I won’t get into spoilers but the major boss encounters are the best encounters not only on this game but the entire sonic series as a whole, the game is almost worth it for them alone. The music is all absolutely steller and enhances the mood perfectly at any given time. The story is a fun and intriguing mystery that lets sonic and friends reflect on their pasts and help each other get through such a dire situation. The writing is a huge step up from previous games and allows the characters to feel like actual characters and not just mouthpieces to say lame jokes. There are minor technical issues such as pop-in but other then that the game runs smoothly and I never ran into a single glitch prior to obtaining the platinum trophy. There were some sections that I felt were rather problematic but in general the gameplay was fun and both the music and visuals made me want to keep running around the areas. However, my main issues with the game were that some of the story mini games made me feel an unbridled rage and some situations left me clueless as to what I needed to do with the hint system being nearly useless. Of these situations my least favorite events were, one, where sonic leapt off a raised bridge and you had to do a freefall in order to reach the ground, however, you were timed and the slightest mistake could leave you low on time or failing the quest meaning you had to actively choose to avoid the orange rings and springs and just speed dive to the ground. And my second instance that left me befuddled was the first time I encountered the enemy that just straight up drowns you. It may just be a skill issue but I didn't realize I had to stomp to escape the enemy until I got the clue in the game over sequence. I had simply assumed I needed to jump more and faster in order to break out of the thing. That said, even with these issues I had a truly wonderful time and after taking a quick break from the game I will be returning to it to play it more. Also if you own the game on PC I would greatly recommend installing Hedgemod manager in order to disable the camera locking onto the umbrella enemy. It's a major quality of life improvement. Expand

Also I believe the challengers, some are really easy, maybe some platforming would be good, sometimes, they are too generous, specially if you already got hold of the controllers, I suggest Zone-Based challenges example: "bring water to X location for dessert zones" or "get from this lo cation to this location with some platforming". I kid you not I was flabbergasted that Kellin of Sleeping with Sirens was brought into do the vocals for three of the Titan boss fights. It was a surreal experience I could not describe. The story itself is beyond what I have expected from a sonic game and definitely a step up compared to the stories we've been getting for over the last 10 years or so. No offense anyone who like Sonic Colors's style of writing but I think hearing sonic say badly mcnose hair just doesn't do it for me. Memory Tokens, Purple Coins, Keys, Gears and Emeralds, all are scattered throughout the world and leave a non-linear progression in the game to allow the player to carve their own path towards advancing the story. My only gripe would be is for future games to have more "sonic-y" styled aesthestics for open world akin to Adventure, and allow for more natural ways in the envrionment to show off Sonic's abilities rather than random rails and black climable walls, but for the sake of this games context it makes sense. Sonic's movement is extremely fluid and fun to play around with and using his speed to get to higher areas in different ways is extremely enjoyable, adding to the non-linearity. Cyberspace stages are mixed, while some are fun, others are very clearly reusing design choices that does eventually wear on the repetition of the stages. I would like for more original level designs overall and better controls as Sonic can feel stiff in these levels, both of which i'd like to see take more inspiration from Generations way of handling boost stages. Combat was surpisingly extremely fun, while it is simple I greatly appreciated it and had so much fun getting better at learning the combat system and using Sonic's new arsenal of moves. Bosses and Mini Bosses are the BEST the series has seen in over 20 years, each one is extremely unique with their own gimmicks and patterns to keep you on your toes. I was so satisfied playing all these battles and getting better at them as it only added to my joy of the combat system. The story was excellent and the greatest we have seen since Sonic Adventure 2. The amount of new discoveries and new revelations we had to pre-existing lore combined with new story elements was so intruging and I loved every second of it. By the end I cried at how beautiful it was. I hope Ian Flynn and his Team can return for future mainline games as they were excellent. The OST was as great as always from Sonic games and I commend Ohtani and the sound teams work. Overall, Morio Kishimoto and the rest of Sonic Team have produced a great and satisfying experience that deserves the praise it gets after all their hard work. This was a great step forward for the franchise and I hope future installments build upon it's formula while making it bigger and better. The final boss was ok but could've been better. The true final boss, only accessible by playing the game on hard mode, would've been amazing if the fight itself was...better. The music is fantastic and the character interactions is one of the best things about this game.

There is pop-in, automated segments where the game literally rips the control from the player's hands, and the combat is shallow. Idk why but I never noticed the pop-in probably more than five times but I felt like it would've been disingenuous to not mention it. The combat is style with little substance but I've never been one to hate that type of combat in games so it was still very enjoyable.

To a casual gamer or person, this game would probably land around the 7-8 mark as it currently is rated by the overall Users' Rating Score and Metascore but I simply had enough fun with this game that I'd be dishonest to not rate it a 9.

There are a few negatives, mainly with the pop in and the cyberspace levels. While the cyberspace levels are enjoyable, they are the weakest part of this game as they are based on 4 past stages that fans have seen countless times, so I'd certainly want to see more variety on it. Some may argue that the graphics might not be the greatest, but it does tie back into the pop in issue. If you want less pop in, I recommend playing the Switch version, but if you want 60fps gameplay, then I do recommend PC or PS5 versions.

Overall, very fun and enjoyable game that is very much worth playing.

But overall it's a pretty solid game, awesome new voice direction, AWESOME soundtrack might I add since I'm a really big metal fan too!! Only serious complaint is the cyberspace stages making Sonic feel too heavy or sometimes doing weird dead stops because of the map geometry.

And I think the final titan should have been more difficult and less of the focus placed on the weird Space Invaders like section at the end. I kinda liked what they were going for, but maybe the Space invaders esc fight shouldve happened before the titan. was shorter and then the titans in general be a little harder (as a setting ofc) hard didn't feel too hard

As a Sonic fan I really like this game. The open world "levels/zones" are huge, with a lot to do from platforming to puzzles. I feel like the size of them really lets you go full speed and have fun while doing it. The random enemy spawns are fun, not too annoying or overwhelming. There is enough variety in the open zones to keep me interested, especially going for 100% on each. I find myself just blasting away an hour or so just running around.
The stages themselves are also pretty great. They're not too long and give enough of a challenge to be fun without being too frustrating. There are similar places like Green Hill and Chemical Plant, among others and they vary from 3rd person to side-scrolling. They are scattered through the open zones, and need special Gears to be unlocked, but those are easy enough to get.
The boss battles, the big titans, are also quite fun. You get to be super sonic, which is fun and the music is honestly phenomenal. The battles give a little challenge, but nothing too crazy.
Story? Well it's a Sonic title, so it's kinda wild with a bit of heartstring tugging. The voices are great too.
The soundtrack is amazing. Every song rocks from chill melancholy, to heavy metal rock. It deserves an award.
And, there is a fishing minigame. Different spots for each open zone - find the portal, go there, and fish with Big the Cat. It's super easy and not really challenging, but still fairly fun as you always get something. Everything caught leads to items and currency to upgrade Sonic.
Upgrading Sonic is fairly simple, picking up seeds and little creatures to turn in with elder Koko. you can level up Sonic's attack, defense, speed, and ring capacity. You can also unlock new moves for Sonic's combos. Those get unlocked pretty quickly, which I don't hate because it means you get to use his full range of attacks for most of the game.
OVERALL I think it's a great game that is reminiscent of the Adventure series, with bits of Generations and Forces mixed in. People that say the game is repetitive..I'm assuming have never played a Sonic game, let alone a video game in general. Every game feels repetitive after a while from COD to God of War.

I would give it a 10 if you could play as other characters.

+Crazy boss fights that come straight out of an anime. +So much to explore and collect!
+ Intense speed and action! + Beautiful overworld music like something straight out of Nier Automata or a Square Enix ost. + Laid back mini fishing games in each area to tone down after all the high intensity speed and action. I’m personally really loving it, the last 2 islands did feel kinda rushed though and 2D sections can be wonky but I’m glad those are short. There are a rare few 3d platform sections and I think 3d sonic should stay like this with those sections thrown in here and there to keep players engaged longer. Also I feel the last two islands should have had their own theme like the first 3. I think the last island while smaller then the first three, is big enough and all the islands should have been this big but with more islands to explore too with different themes like a snowy mountains, seaside etc.

Overall lovely game with a few quality of life changes needed that I feel would make it an outstanding game but that doesn’t mean it’s average, this game is brilliant. Team Sonic finally made a 3D Sonic worth playing (yes it’s better then Generations & Colours)! I personally loved it and at the end of the day, that’s all that should matter whenever you game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is the step in the right direction the fans have been waiting for. I distinctly recall being worried about the quality of the game when the first few videos were released, but when I finally saw the game for what it was, it was like a breath of fresh air. Though the game appears unpolished in some places, this is a fun game overall and worth playing if you get the opportunity.

Once again, the OST never misses. The music is great and I’ve caught myself listening to songs on repeat. The Titan fights gave me flashbacks to certain other Sonic games that played songs with lyrics over their bosses. But, somehow, they’re better!

The character writing is so nice! In the past, there has been an issue with certain character traits being comically exaggerated. It was great being able to enjoy character dynamics and be truly invested again. I even caught myself laughing at Sonic’s lines! I could see personalities behind everyone and it was a wonderful feeling. Sonic’s relationships with Amy, Knuckles, and Tails felt far more real, too, and so did Sage’s development and Eggman’s relationship with her. I’d call this the strongest point of the game.

The continuity is great, too. I loved hearing characters wonder what their friends are up to or remark how something reminds them of this other thing. It helps me to remember that these characters have a long history together and, again, makes them feel more real. The slightly deeper voices and the goals they express for their futures also help with this maturity aspect. They’ve been adventuring for so long, it’s great to see them maturing and opening up possibilities for solo games.

The setting is pretty! I wish some of the platforming was integrated into the landscape, though, and not just floating. Sometimes the random rails and platforms looked strange in the air. The different biomes on each island were cool, though. The lore of the islands was fascinating and came with some interesting implications for Chaos and the Chao. I’m glad we got to expand upon the Chaos Emeralds.

The controls are tight but the physics have issues sometimes. The skill tree was a very cool idea.

Unfortunately, my biggest issue was with the final boss and the following ending. I loved the idea of a Lovecraftian horror that takes out civilizations for reasons mortals cannot comprehend, and the idea of The End manipulating Sonic from the beginning was fantastic. I have played other games that have used the same concept and made it compelling and it’s one of my favorite story tropes. However, the fight was underwhelming. I like shooting minigames, but how is that what the player has to do after those fights with the Titans? Especially after making a whole skill tree for Sonic? The fact that The End is just a purple moon also bothers me after the great designs for the Titans. The End feels like the weakest point of the game to me.

Sage fighting with Super Sonic against The End in space and sacrificing herself for the greater good felt like a great homage to SA2. I may or may not have shed a tear, there are no witnesses to confirm nor deny that allegation. However, Sonic and his friends just flying off at the end without talking about it seemed jarring. We’re not going to acknowledge that Sonic was tricked by a god? Or that Sage just seemingly died? How is everyone okay just flying off into the sunset?

Most importantly, this game is fun. Despite certain slip-ups, Sonic Frontiers is a good time to be had. Overall, a solid 9/10 in my book. Easily could have been a 10/10 had some further polish been applied. My final question is this: Chao Garden when?

It’s not just fan service though, characters seem to be developing and a bigger narrative is forming in the Sonic games.

The open zone gameplay is great. I think it was the most fun and I wasn’t expecting it to be as fun as it was. I loved exploring and I’ve sucked a lot of time into just running around.

The titan fights are incredible. They really make you feel invincible. That’s how super sonic should feel.

The music is really good. The swelling music of the islands, the lo-fi when fishing with Big, the house and edm of cyberspace, the heavy metal when going super: it all sounds great and somehow sounds like Sonic. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss Crush 40 though. Love those guys.

Cyberspace was where I can’t give Sonic Frontiers a 10. It’s a great idea and I want the boost era level design to stay in the games. But there are a few problems with it. Cyberspace levels meld together. It’s hard to remember individual levels because there are only four backgrounds. Also, Cyberspace physics are rough. It’s really difficult to turn sonic when boosting or if he’s in the air. It doesn’t feel as easy to control as unleashed or generations. Also, jumping causes you to completely lose your momentum. Next, I really like the impact of the homing attack, but I think it should allow you to cancel out of the recovery animation to more quickly stomp or chain homing attacks. Lastly, something feels very wrong with the 2D cyberspace levels. Sonic feels extremely slow. Even boosting feels like it’s doing nothing. At the end of the day though I still really enjoyed the cyberspace levels. Their inclusion is certainly very welcomed.

Sonic Frontiers is well worth your money and time. I think this is a must play for any sonic fan. For anyone new to the franchise or on and off with the franchise, try this game out. I think you’ll really enjoy it.

This is the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time, and I genuinely stand by that statement. This game, at least for me, really does a good job at sucking you in and making you want to play for just hours on end. I haven't played a game in a long time that's made me feel this way, and it is quite refreshing. Running around freely in a big open world is something I've always wanted to see in a Sonic game, and this game certainly delivers it very well! Sonic controls the best he has in a long time. He's much easier to maneuver, you can finally turn on a dime again, and the movement overall just feels much more fluid. The new combat system while simple is also a blast to play around with, and you can actually do some pretty flashy tricks and attacks while battling. The control overall does take a bit of time to get used to the first time around, so don't be dissuaded if you aren't getting the hang of things right out of the gate. Once you do, it's really addicting. The game is built to allow you to experiment with Sonic's moveset and find new ways to explore the Islands through stuff like the boost (obviously), Drop Dash, and other ways of covering ground more quickly. It's not perfect by any means, and there are things about the game that definitely could've been done better or at the least differently. Without going into spoilers, the true ending kind of is just a bit disappointing, and of course there are some technical issues like the pop in and whatnot (not really a whole lot of bugs though, from what I came across). But in all honesty, that's okay! Let's be real, no game is perfect, and as long as the game is still fun, that should be what matters the most. And if there is one thing that this game certainly is, it's pure fun from start to finish. If you like Sonic or are interested in trying a new Sonic game, I highly recommend Sonic Frontiers. It's a great time and I really think you'll have a ball with it once you start playing and getting the hang of things. And if you want my advice, take the time to really explore your surroundings because it just really enhances the experience. Overall, I'm giving it a 9/10. Expand

I'll be honest. After the last 5 years being boring rushed game after boring rushed game, I didn't expect much from sonic anymore. But THIS, now THIS is the good stuff.
Sonic + an open map resembling BOTW + Bossfights out of Shadow of The Collosus + Music out of MGR: Revengance?!

Cyberspace had a lot of reused stages but if you learn the controls you can have a good time with them (not as good as unleashed or generations but not as bad as forces). The super sonic boss fights were the absolute best part of this game, the music in these fights just went crazy (not talking about the secret final boss). I think sega should continue the open zone style gameplay and keep improving on it. When the next game gets more manpower in development and an even bigger budget we could get the best sonic game ever. So try this game out, you will have a good time. Expand

Amazing game. I've played it on the the Switch(which is the worst version you can play it on)the only problems i had was the pop-ins and the quality(the quality isn't because of the game is because of the hardware of the Nintendo Switch)Has an Great story, Great Characters, Great OST and more i'd recommend it but mostly on PC, PS5 or Steamdeck. They have better hardware.

Amy doesn’t feel like the love crazy girlfriend sonic always tries to avoid but like a caring and loving person. Knuckles feels scared knowing he’s the last Acidna and that he’ll die alone but he’s comforted by sonic telling him that he’ll have him and the others to grow old with. And tails oh boy, tails feels upset with himself as he thinks of himself as a burden to sonic and just an annoying sidekick who always needs help but sonic takes that older brother role and comforts him and tells him that he’s not a burden and that needing help isn’t a bad thing but just part of growing up. The combat is very quick and engaging while not being super confusing or super simplistic. The cyberspace levels really give this game a break from the action to provide high speed levels of exhilarating fun. Don't even get me started on the boss battles! When I first saw this giant evangelion-looking robot, I was initially intimidated, but when Sonic became Super Sonic and metal music started to play, I realized that I was the boss fight in this videogame. My only real gripe with the game is how the final boss wasn't the best and the ending wasn't what I had expected. Hopefully the DLC will help make this amazing game more badass in the end! If you haven't bought this game yet, I highly recommend you do because this game was soooooooo fun! Hopefully SEGA will give this rodent some more love because I am now a Sonic fan! Expand

I was genuinely surprised at how much fun I had exploring the open-zone area's of this game and just how great it feels controlling sonic. As a Sonic game it's definitely one of the best. However it needs improvement mostly with the combat system which I feel is far too easy for its own good, I like the fact it's fast paced and doesn't slow down the gameplay but I wish it required a bit more challange. Some of the pop in can get pretty bad in the game to the point it just breaks all immersion. Only reason I don't mind it is due to how much it is playing as Sonic as you are going too fast to care about the pop in. The game could be a solid 10 for me but the lack of polish and reuse of level themes really brings down the game.

The story was surprisingly good, thankfully it's not garbage or mediocre writing like what we got in the recent games and I think a true sonic fan would love the story and the lore introduced in this game. Sonic frontiers feels like something Sega themselves care about and I can't wait to see a sequel.

It's not the best sonic game but it is one of the best, it's a step in the right direction for the franchise if you ask me. And I hope Sega and Sonic team continue to evolve and continue to use this new open zone formate for future games. Sonic frontiers is a 9/10 for me but it could be better. This is some of the most fun you'll have in a sonic game and it deserves the praise

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers, although just a bit janky, reintroduces an adventure-like formula based on exploration, which is used in the open-zone islands. I personally enjoyed the plenty of playground-like obstacles that you traverse through in order to get memory tokens for the characters and how they can even be also used as a method of fast-travel, not to mention the ancient rails themselves. I also familiarized fairly quickly with the controls, including combat-based ones.

One thing that particularly stood out to is the writing, the characters are better than ever, no more background filler or cheesy one-liners or tropes. Amy is back to being a strong believer in love and caring for others, Knuckles is back to his island where he was supposed to be from the very beginning, and Tails improvement specially stood out to me the most, as he was always depicted as a nerdy coward since Sonic Unleashed. Sage, of course, is the embodiment of Ian Flynn's influence in the game's script, a character that left an emotional impact among fans since Chip in, again, Sonic Unleashed, while also showing to the world a more human side of Eggman. The only criticism i have about her character arc is the small amount of screentime Ian Flynn had to work with, i believe that a little more cutscenes had to be made in order to further show the father-daughter dynamic between Sage and Eggman, but still, i believe that enough information was delivered to form an idea of it, causing the final scene of the game to have such an impact among us sonic fans the way it did. Lastly, during the course of the game, there are mentions of previous characters that were once thought to be lately forgotten by Sega, like Cream the Rabbit and Blaze the Cat, and also the mentions of characters which canonicity was questioned, like Sticks the Badger and Tangle the Lemur. I personally like these mentions as they help feel more connection within the different aspects of Sonic's universe.

Now getting into the topic of bossess, my only criticism was the final boss against ''The End'', it was definitely an odd choice to execute the fight in an Ikaruga style gameplay, and this reflects the rushed development that Sega had at the very end of the game's development. On the other hand, the rest of the bossess before it are excellent.

The level design of the Cyberspace Stages, are personally acceptable to me within the context of the general gameplay and the story, they are arcade-like levels that are meant to possess similarities to previous sonic stages as these are sonic's memories stored in the Cyberspace. I believe the Forces-like short level formula works decently well in this game.

Overall, the game has minor flaws, but it is definitely not a ''death of a thousand cuts'', as these flaws are immediately overshadowed by the game's positive attributes. Sonic Frontiers definitely deserves to be praised just as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3&K, Sonic Heroes, etc. Do.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
