Sonic Frontiers is really a good Sonic game after all the bad games there, the game made me cry after finishing it, the characters, the history, the landscapes, etc. This is a new era for 3d Sonic games

Sonic Team has crafted a game that evidently had a lot of care put into it, with excellent character dynamics. There are some issues, most glaring the pop-in of assets, stiffness in Cyber Space, and a bit of decline towards the end, but Frontiers provides a great experience for fans of the series and even newcomers. Just take the time to learn how Sonic controls and you can be on your way. Expand

Open zone is a nice concept by allowing Sonic to free roam, similar to Mario Odyssey. You explore different 3 big islands by running around, grinding rails, do some platforming, combat, or access the cyberspace levels - which are modern Sonic levels with boost linear stages. And the boss fight is undeniably the best part of the game.

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D Sonic games. The way we can control our hedgehog in 3D in the smoothest ever, makes the game even more fun.

Story and gameplay wise, it's certainly a big improvement than the previous titles, hopefully this game will set as a new foundation for the future Sonic games, just like the first Sonic Adventure.

This is the Sonic game I've been waiting for since Unleashed and Generations. It's such a great game. It's a little buggy here and there and a little janky but those things don't really bother me I've been a fan for a long time I'm used to that kinda stuff. I hope Sonic Team takes what they've done with this game and improve it for future Sonic Games this formula has so much potential,

There were some sections that I felt were rather problematic but in general the gameplay was fun and both the music and visuals made me want to keep running around the areas. However, my main issues with the game were that some of the story mini games made me feel an unbridled rage and some situations left me clueless as to what I needed to do with the hint system being nearly useless. Of these situations my least favorite events were, one, where sonic leapt off a raised bridge and you had to do a freefall in order to reach the ground, however, you were timed and the slightest mistake could leave you low on time or failing the quest meaning you had to actively choose to avoid the orange rings and springs and just speed dive to the ground. And my second instance that left me befuddled was the first time I encountered the enemy that just straight up drowns you. It may just be a skill issue but I didn't realize I had to stomp to escape the enemy until I got the clue in the game over sequence. I had simply assumed I needed to jump more and faster in order to break out of the thing. That said, even with these issues I had a truly wonderful time and after taking a quick break from the game I will be returning to it to play it more. Also if you own the game on PC I would greatly recommend installing Hedgemod manager in order to disable the camera locking onto the umbrella enemy. It's a major quality of life improvement. Expand

The open areas really need to be these big, mainly empty areas with occassional obstacles. After all, you are constantly running around with ridiculous speed, and it feels great.

There are fast travel options, but 10/10 times I preferred running across the whole area to see how fast I can get there.
Now another aspect is the brand new and interesting combat paired with a bunch of varied enemies to fight. While not all of them are fun to fight against, I was always excited to see a new enemy, mainly the mini bosses, to see their cool designs and how they'd fight. I didn't expect much from the combat but it was still quite enjoyable, especially the boss fights in each area.

It's not a game you would play for a deep story or for its intricate mechanics. It's simply a good time, and I had a very good time with it. I certainly can't wait for the Sonic Team to expand and improve on this concept.

The worst part about this game was letting IGN be the first to premier the game, since they had a presumably buggier, older build and played it horribly. I do generally enjoy the game a lot but I won't deny that it has some issues I hope get worked on for the game because they do have a good base here for future games... The speed feels amazing, and with the ability to adjust different aspects, you can go for that extremely high precision from older 3D titles like Sonic Adventure 2, and Day Stages in Sonic Unleashed, or go for a more slow, and methodical style, similar to Night Stages in Sonic Unleashed, or Shadow's style of combat in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), or even something in between. Each option is extremely smooth and tight, just done at different speeds The soundtrack is one of the greatest I've ever heard, especially in the current landscape of more cinematic OSTs, and Orchestral tracks, the hard Mid-2000s rock brings a breath of fresh air, and an adrenaline rush like no other. Tracks like "Undefeatable", "Break Through it All", and "One Way Dream" are sure to make Sonic fans think about the days where Crush 40 was making Sonic OSTs some of the most iconic in gaming. Without getting into spoilers for the main story, the story itself is amazing, down to the more mature voice acting, to the world building, and even some simple character interactions. The boss fights are also a treat to behold. Each one is accompanied by this adrenaline pumping track, and the sheer amount of power you feel in each fight is enough to put final boss fights from not only other Sonic games, but many other games in general to shame. I played Frontiers in the Nintendo Switch system, and found very few instances of glitches, or structures popping in that aren't also present in some of the massive AAA games of the modern day. My only complaint at the moment with the game is how you cannot re-fight bosses after already beating them, but I am more than willing to replay through the game just to re-experience those fights. Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who is even remotely curious, or even if you aren't. I have adored every second of this game, and I am willing to bet you will too. Expand

The combos are so satisfying more than the Werehog (or at least the HD Version), The story is great & the atmosphere is amazing! The boss fights are the most fun I’ve ever had in a Sonic game ever, especially Giganto & The second to last boss that I won’t name for the sake of spoilers. The only weak point of the game is kind of Cyberspace, I was hoping these would be a mix of Colors & Unleashed stages as those are the best of the Boost Era, but nope it’s closer to an Arcade style Forces level with Lost World physics. It’s not all bad though as getting S ranks can be fun! (Except 1-2). All in all this is most fun I’ve ever had with Sonic in 10 years! Please pick this game up!

Feels like the past 10 years of whatever the hell Pontaff were on about are finally over, the OST is one of my favorites, I really appreciate the overall tone and atmosphere.
The islands are all pretty well designed and movement works well. There's some jank because of the mesh collisions, there's definitely some things to overlook, but the Open Zone is a solid 9 for me.
It's comparable to the good open world games like BoTW and Elden Ring, imo.
It's not really fair to call it open world, cause it is indeed an open zone thing, it's one of those things you really have to try in order to understand.
The game controls better than it looks like from videos, mostly because some animations are pretty stiff.
The Cyberspace stages are 50/50, some are extremely lame, the 2D ones specifically, some range from good to OK.
The best ones come from SA2, obviously. The few original ones are okay, I wish they dared more.
The controls in Cyberspace are "fine" in 3D but completely ass in 2D.
Cyberspace is a very small portion of the game nevertheless, and 100% that side took me 40 minutes at most.

The SuperSonic boss fights are the best in the series, hands down, wish there was a boss rush mode.

Overall? Pretty good game, definitely my GOTY. Adventure fans this is for you, kinda.

A fantastic game all around, it does so many things right and is an amazing step for sonic the hedgehog moving forward! Hope that Sega don't immediately drop this new formula after this because it's truly something special

Sonic really does feel great to control in this one, possibly the best ground control he has ever had. It is just fun to move around as sonic let alone doing anything

Sonic really does feel great to control in this one, possibly the best ground control he has ever had. It is just fun to move around as sonic let alone doing anything else. However the main bulk of the game is spent acquiring different collectibles through platforming challenges and other means like puzzles and combat, which while might not seem to mesh together too well from the outside, it actually works really well in practice!

The combat is a huge step up from any sonic game and the enemies have depth, while the moves themselves are fun to pull off. Sonic has many different ways to approach enemies, like the tower who you can fight by taking out his lower bits first or you can climb him when he presents the opening and take out the top, instantly destroying every bottom but making him vulnerable if he isn't already dead.

The cyberspace levels are ok overall, and the physics aren't nearly as good as the open world, however it is still pretty fun. The 2d sky sanctuary level kinda sucks tho as generations classic sonic level design just doesn't work in this game. The cyberspace stages truly shine towards the end of the game!

The bosses are easily the best in the series, and that's as much as I'll say without spoilers! You want to experience this yourself!

The music is amazing as usual, one of the best sonic osts with tracks to fit every situation. The visuals are nice but the pop in is a major issue that should be fixed with a potential frontiers 2

Overall this game is worth your time and money, you won't be dissapointed! Have fun, and enjoy because Sega finally got it right!

The open stage though is amazing. It looked dull but to play it is actually so fun. The game could also be a bit harder, even playing in hard it’s very easy to destroy all the bosses with your super powerful moves and it’s easy to collect rings to keep from dying. Momentum would also be amazing but to be honest the game works fine without it. The story felt very detached. Basically use the open stages and then make sonic adventure stages to go in between them and it would be great. I didnt find cyberspace that bad as everyone was saying it was, only the occasional 2d level felt slow and just not nice to play but most of them were somewhat enjoyable, but if anything the peak of this game was its boss fights, these almost had me jumping out of my seat and along with the amazing soundtrack this game had especially during boss fights they just out. I feel like the story is lacking if you havent played or dont have a lot of knowledge of prior sonice games as it somewhat does rely on you to know some characters there history and even previous events for you to you to get that full experience but as someone who has that knowledge, the characters were represented in a way that just felt right and the story was nice especially for lore. The only thing id say about the ending and final boss is that it was somewhat anticlimactic especially compared to prior parts of the game and even other sonic final bosses but had some nice character moments and although not the best ending still felt satisfying. Overall one of the best sonic games to date, its best moments are amazing and its worst can feel slow and tedious. This is my first ever review of a video game on a website so sorry if it isn't well structured.

    Open World Gameplay: (8/10)
Putting sonic in an open zone with the fastest boost mechanic in the series felt amazing! Similar to Spider-man on PS4 the movement never got stale and at times I'd just be running and exploring the game just for the fun of it! The movement felt amazing most of the time, there are slight hiccups like the 2D camera getting in the way, some structures sonic should be able to run up on just don't work but overall the movement is one of the best in the series. Sonic actually turns extremely well!
Though a little negative on the gameplay is that the structure of the gameplay did get repetitive and the quality of the islands got worse, the fourth island wasn't even an island in terms of exploration and looked familiar to Kronos & the last island just felt like an expanded Kronos, I was hoping with a snow island but oh well. But overall very good! The combat I was really shocked by, the combat is pretty good! Sonic has a vast skill-set & enemies that sonic faces all have different attack patterns and effective ways to beat them, overall the combat is definitely something to enjoy! The boss battles are AWESOME! Super sonic never felt so powerful before and the fact it's the same combat as the open zone but stronger, faster and even special interactable cutscenes makes it even better! Though I did wish the parrying in the combat was timed based in hard mode. Overall the gameplay is pretty good! A few things could make it the gameplay even better would be Momentum, Harder enemies, Health bar (You can barely die with rings), parrying being timed based, more to do in the open zone than collecting collectables (for a future sequel I hope!) Overall I'm a super fan for the open zone gameplay! Fishing is actually playable unlike SA1, good choice sonic team!

    Cyberspace Gameplay: (5/10)
I know this is a low score, but overall cyberspace wasn't as important as the open world since cyberspace acts like special stages to get the Chaos Emeralds. Cyberspace levels when compared to the prior games felt really off, sonic controls completely differently in cyberspace when compared to the open world and can't be customized (C'mon)! Sonic controls badly, the level design is just re-used assets from prior games besides the city stage, levels are extremely short and overall just isn't as good as Generations, Unleashed, Colors!

    Story: (6.5/10)
This might be one of the lower scores in terms of category but when it comes to frontiers story it is definitely headed to the right direction. The story has a more mature setting and theme which I'm all down for, a big improvement over forces laughable story. The best part in my opinion in the story were the characters interactions, Ian flynn does an amazing job of writing the dialogue and makes it feel so natural, the references were quite nice! But overall though the story is an improvement compare to forces and generations, when comparing the potential of the story compared to prior games Sonic Adventure 2 & Sonic & The Black Knights this story felt rushed, I feel with some extra time and some polishes the story could of been a much higher score. Near end of the story it felt really rushed, I was expecting a nice conclusion with all the characters, was actually interested in Sonic's cyber corruption and was wondering how he would go back to normal, but literally within the same cutscene Amy, Knuckles and Tails just enter inside him and fixes him? Didn't feel like their was tension to his cyber corruption even though it was building through the entire game, the outlines are there for a great story but felt flat for me. (Sonic team please just make Ian Flynn the main writer for the game, I think if he had more control aside from dialogue it would of been amazing!)

    Music: (9/10)
Sonic has never disappointed with their music, but this game's soundtrack is so good! "Undefeatable" is my current favorite. The open world music as calm instrumental music for each island, which definitely fits the story's mysterious theme, but when the boss's come expect rock and metal! Sadly no crush 40, the music still slaps and definitely worth a listen even outside playing the game.

    Conclusion:
Overall this is a step in the right direction and I would be lying to say Sonic in an open space isn't fun, It's EXTREMELY fun! Though not a perfect game, this formula with some revisions and add-ons could create an even better game! I hope sonic team doesn't drop this open zone formula, but adds more to the game to make it even better!

My main points to improve the game for a sequel would be:
    - Post-Game Content
    - Momentum (I know drop dash has it but talking about overall movement)
    - More content besides collecting collectables
    - Other playable characters with different gameplay

Overall this is a good leap forward for the franchise, thank you sonic team!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a new step for the Sonic franchise, and one that while not perfect, certainly sets the strongest of foundations for even grander adventures in the future. Frontiers is the first open-zone outing for Sonic, and it can’t be understated how truly different, and good, this game feels.

From the beginning, you are thrown into a wide, expansive archipelago with Kronos Island as your introduction. The game feels, and looks great. Though it has some issues that can’t be fully excused, as pop-in is, and has been an issue since its first previews. Though one does get used to this overtime. As for Sonic’s control, its by far the best it has been since Sonic Adventure, though a minor nitpick is the jank you can come across when going over certain terrain, as Sonic can feels at times ‘glued’ to the ground, and you will find issues fighting against the games boundaries. Despite this, Sonic controls like a dream, and the added ability to fine tune you’re movement ability and physics is an incredible feature that should become a mainstay of the franchise.

Going into some negatives, SEGA advertised 5 islands for this game, and while there are many opinions regarding them, it can’t be denied there is effectively 4. A critique of Sonic Forces, being its runtime, is perhaps one SEGA and Sonic Team took too strongly with this game. To explain, Sonic Frontiers is made up of Kronos, Ares, Chaos, Rhea, and Ouranos Islands. Together they are dubbed the ‘Starfall Islands’. Rhea in particular is a standout, being a story segment and quite literally the other half of Kronos that is otherwise inaccessible, yet is dubbed as its own island. This sadly feels quite cheap. Why not make this just a segment where we return to Kronos? (As we literally do). As for Ouranos. Its a fully original island in its terrain, but shares aesthetic with Kronos. I for one find it fitting we return to something alike to Kronos, in a way I can’t explain. But do acknowledge others complaints for this segment.

Ending off the major negatives, Cyber Space is unfortunately a mixed bag. With controls that don’t feel as good as the overworld, especially in comparison, but really shine in the later levels that contain original level design. Which is where it is to be said that Cyberspace adopts level layouts AND aesthetics from previous titles. Being yet another Sonic title in a row to do this, right after Forces, Generations, etc. Despite this, they’re a fun little bit of content overall and can be quite fun to speedrun.

Sonic Frontiers shines in all of the new it brings to the franchise, with the expansive environments, and absolutely stellar Titan boss fights found at the end of the islands. These boss fights I feel raise the standard for Sonic the Hedgehog boss battles, with fun gameplay, killer music, and amazing spectacle. So lets hope SEGA will add a means of being able to replay these incredible bosses. Music and presentation is a highlight of Frontiers, and along with the gameplay of the boss fights, this stands as all the more true.

We end with the story of Sonic Frontiers. One that promised a more mysterious, somber, and melancholy tone. It can be felt from the very beginning that Frontiers delivers on this promise. SAGE is a strong inclusion to the roster of Sonic, and one I’m sure myself and others will want to see return or even become a mainstay in the franchise after her inclusion and writing. Character interactions are a highlight, where we can see the writer, Ian Flynn, truly cared for the integrity of the characters, and calling back to and correcting Sonic lore. Its refreshing to see these characters as themselves again, not simply one note stereotypes and one liner generators. It can be said Frontiers is perhaps a chosen narrative, as one will get more out of the story by going out of their way to seek further side cutscenes to flesh out the world and story further. This story is truly meant for Sonic fans so for myself, I loved this story, but can see why it may not resonate with others. The ending is a point of contention with many, for perhaps feeling weak, or anti-climatic. To me personally I can see these critics, but find that I still felt fulfilment from the ending.

In closure, Sonic Frontiers is a great game, and an amazing Sonic game. It has its flaws and detractors, but despite the issues I highlighted, I feel Sonic Frontiers deserves a 10/10, for being a new great step in the franchise, and by now my favourite Sonic game. I completed and 100% this game after 26 hours of playtime, and recommend this game to any interested in picking it up.

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
