    Poorly designed in a great number of aspects, can be very janky, cyberspace levels suck and make forces' levels look great, pretty buggy (I've had 3 crashes so far among other bugs). Just generally very unpolished and unfinished in a lot of ways, needed more time.     A massive step in the right direction for the franchise! This game takes a fresh new approach to sonic gameplay while also offering a return to more serious lore building and plot. The characters are all written beautifully, the combat was intergraded naturally, and I'm so excited to see what comes next!

    This game is the return of Sonic as we all know and love.Of course, the game isn't without it's problems, like the distracting pop-in. But it does so much right. The open zone is fun to run around in, the combat is interesting and fun to pull of different combos. The Cyberspace levels, while with questionable physics, are still enjoyable to traverse.     One of the best 3-D sonic games in years. Had an amazing time going through the Starfall islands.
    Wish they were more things to do in the open world and have patches for Poppins, but overall a solid game

    Fantastic game honestly, had a blast playing it, definitely seemed like Sonic team took this one seriously and executed it in a fantastic way, I hope this momentum can keep up for the future sonic games.

    Very fun game. A little rough around the edges in ways that could have been fixed with another month of polishing off but doesn't detract from the overall experience. Easily the best Sonic game we've had in over a decade and a promising sign of things to come.

The “Open-Zone” style of gameplay with Sonic exploring very large areas with tons of secrets, collectibles, enemies, and bosses combined with the more linear modern Sonic boost levels found around the islands make for a fantastic gameplayA fantastic new formula for years to come.     As a fan of Sonic for a long time, Sonic Frontiers made me go back in time when i was a kid, and made me wanted to play Sonic games from start to finish for long hours, since first time my dad brought me a Mega Drive. This game for me was addictive! I could found myself falling in love with the story and the characters development/dialogs since the beggining of the game. The cyberspaceAs a fan of Sonic for a long time, Sonic Frontiers made me go back in time when i was a kid, and made me wanted to play Sonic games from start to finish for long hours, since first time my dad brought me a Mega Drive. This game for me was addictive! I could found myself falling in love with the story and the characters development/dialogs since the beggining of the game. The cyberspace levels were Also very entertaining and give us a glimpse of other Sonic games of the past, through the level design itself. The idea of the open world for me was very well executed. For those who like to take their time to explore and admiring the view of the Islands, it was a breath of fresh air.
    Altho the game for me was an absolutelly masterpiece that all us Sonic fans were waiting for a long time, there still some aspects that i think SEGA could do better, for exemple:
    -I found some bugs along the way that were kinda annoying. I was even stuck at a rock, glitching non stop. I had to shut down the game and open it again - There was times where my controls stopped fuctioning. For exemple when i was doing some jumps, it all the sudden they stop working. I had to repeat some times the same Path because of it. It was a little annoying.
    - The ending was good, but I was expecting a little more "wow factor". The boss fight could been a little longer, and was expecting some new form of power of Sonic. It is just my opinion.
    Overall, Sonic Frontiers have a solid base for a future games. I hope that Ian Flinn continues working on games because he is a suberb storyteller and knows the world and the characters better than anyone else. Really recomend buying the game!

    For me Sonic Frontiers is the best way Sonic could start this new age in the Sonic franchise, It does everything in the right way in my opinion.

    First of all the story is very good, obviously it isn't a Final Fantasy type of history but is the type of story that you want to see in a Sonic game. It's more or less like Sonic Adventure story and even more interesting because Starfall    For me Sonic Frontiers is the best way Sonic could start this new age in the Sonic franchise, It does everything in the right way in my opinion.

    First of all the story is very good, obviously it isn't a Final Fantasy type of history but is the type of story that you want to see in a Sonic game. It's more or less like Sonic Adventure story and even more interesting because Starfall Islands have many mysteries to solve , the character development is great thanks to Ian Flynn and the story has a lot of lore and backstory of the Chaos Emerlads and other things. Another important point for me is that Sonic make reference to other games quite often so this games helps with the chronology and it helps to know what things are canon and what aren't whlie sometimes you'll be a little confused about that too, for example in some point there are references to Sticks implying that Sonic Boom is canon? In summary the story is pretty good and solid and the more you play, the more you want to know how the story developes.

    In terms of gameplay, Sonic responds really really good and is very fun just to run with Sonic across the islands because the movement and the speed are very well made. The exploration in the open zone is the most enjoyable thing to me because you are always doing something, searching for memory tokens to chat and know more about the other characters, fighting with guardians, solving puzzles, is like a giant playground of Sonic-style gamepelay and I really like that, is very fun to explore and run freely as Sonic. The combat is very fun, entertaining and frenetic, the combos are very sick visually and you feel very powerful but in the end the variety of enemies and its mechanics make a great combat and not a button masher. Also the boss battles as Super Sonic are incredibles, maybe too easy because of the amount of rings you have, but the camera, the boss design, the music, Super Sonic himself, the combination of all of the previously mentioned make all of the bosses excellent except for one, the final boss feels more like a minigame than a final battle, at least is fun to play and the music and dialogue make the battle quite epic. The Cyberspace levels are like the bonus stage for this game, is the place where you go with te purpose of getting the Chaos Emeralds and personally i found them very enjoyable like the rest of the tings in this game. There are a lot of Cyberspace levels per island and some have great level design while others have ok level design, some are very long levels meanwhile some last seconds, but in all of them the music is excellent (like in the rest of the game) and they are very replayable because you are going to need keys to get the Chaos Emerald and this keys are only available in Big's shop and in this Cyberspace levels where you need to complete some missions like achieve an S rank, collect all the Red Star Rings and more, every mission is a key and there are four missions per level so sometime you might repeat a level but only if you want, if you don't want to play these Cyberspace levels you can go fishing with Big the Cat. The fishing minigame is simple, when the fish bites the hook you will have to press the button at the right time to catch it. The more fish you catch the more coins you are going to have and this with coins you can buy thinks like missing kocos, Cyberspace keys, seeds to raise Sonic attack and defense and even Eggman voice-logs. The only problem I have with the fishing minigame is that if you spend a lot of time fishing you can go overpowered really quick so I recommend to not fish exceedingly.

    In conclusion, I think Sonic Frontiers is an excelent game whether you are fan of our favorite blue hedgehog or not. If I weren't a Sonic fan since my childhood my final score would be 8,6/10 but at a big Sonic fan, my final score is 9/10. The game can have its problems like some menus, the final battle and a bit of the fishing minigame, but definitely i recommend this game a lot, i never got bored during my game because the frenetic combat, the great open-zone, the wonderful music, the incredible boss battles, the story written by Ian Flynn and so much more. I think this is the perfect first step for a new era for Sonic the Hedgehog and i hope the quality of the new games keeps improving more and more.    … Expand

    Sonic Frontiers is one of the best games I have ever played. I mean even now I’m sitting and thinking about the different combos I can try and pull off in the game. I love this game and I hope Sonic Team will refine the open zone mechanic in the future games.

    The game is definitely a step in the right direction for sonic team. While this is a very hot take, I think this might be my favorite sonic game. And is easily one of my favorite games ever. I hope sonic team takes the criticism well and molds an outstanding new game out of this ones flaws.

    It's not a perfect game. The pop in is quite bad, cyberspace could seriously use more level themes and more original level designs, and platforms look quite out of place. A lot of this stuff personally doesn't bother me, but I can see how it would for others. I loved the game from beginning to end, I love the puzzles that are scattered on the map but there are 3 main problems for which I do not give it 10/10, which are: 1 the fishing system is broken and that in 15 minutes of When you fish, you can get all the skills to the top, what I would have done was that both in the puzzles spread over the islands there would be different fragments and that in the fishing area as a balance to progress in the game at a normal pace. 2 the poppin and how it appears on the face sometimes. 3 the final boss which is basically an epic and well-done part that later becomes slow and heavy in terms of the rhythm of the game because it seems more like a touhou face than a final boss.     Thoughts-
    There is a lot wrong with Sonic Frontiers, but the things it does right are the ones that matter the most. And it does them just right enough to keep you hooked, and let you truly be drawn in by the sheer brilliance of its core concept. There are also, absolutely, sustained flashes of brilliance in the game’s design, with the open world in particular being an inspired take on Sonic platforming. And more than anything else, it’s just fun to spend time in this game and immerse yourself in it. Yes, Sonic Frontiers isn’t perfect, and it does have a lot of ground to cover in the hopefully inevitable follow-up. But goodness, to me, the things it does right are the ones that will stick with me, and the game’s earnest sense of ambition, and the surprising degree to which it follows through on it, make it a great experience that is, inarguably, some of the best time I have ever had with the Sonic franchise.

    Just an all around epic time with the blue blur! It’s a bit of a proof of concept and has some room to grow, but if you’ve at all been a fan of the series in 3D, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. The physics could be more satisfying, but it still allows you to pull off some impressive feats of speed in both the overworld and cyber space

    Sonic Frontiers might not be perfect but it sure does feel perfect with improvements all around. The pop in can be a problem and I hope it gets fix and the reuse of the first Island with a bigger budget for the sequel. Thank you Sonic Team for reminding me why I love Sonic and friends

    Frenetic, epic bosses and platform puzzles everywhere.
    It's fun to play mechanically speaking.
    Price tag day one is a little bit pricey (on PS5), but, if can catch it in a deal, don't mind it, just buy it.

    O game tem defeitos, principalmente se tratando de bugs gráficos, porém, isso não tira nem um pouco os méritos da Sonic Team. Para mim, um 10/10

    This is probably the best sonic game in over a decade. After sonic forces sonic team really gave it their all here.
    Though frontiers has a really bad pop in issue. I feel the fun gameplay kinda makes it not that much of a problem in the long run.

    An amazing product for the first open world sonic game. Movement is tight and fun, blasting around the islands feel amazing and there's never a dull moment.
    Combat is action pack and shockingly deep for the game.

    Definitely the best Sonic game, the gameplay is great fun and the interactions between the characters have never been so well done in a Sonic game, the only real flaw is the final secret boss, but beyond that to be a game of Sonic is very close to perfection.

    No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

    After 28 hours into sonic frontiers I can officially say I had a good and fun time with the game sure there might be Some jank here and there with some things but if you use it to your advantage the game gets interesting.     This game is just fun through and through. Its not perfect, but not every game has to be perfect. I cant lie, but alot of games that are objectively better, just lack the soul and fun aspects many flawed games have. As a long time sonic fan this game goes stupid hard, the soundtrack is a 10/10 banger and the boss fights are easily the best in the series

    The game was bussin’ It’s fun to run around as sonic the platforming was heat, but the sigma grind got a lil repetitive after slammin enemies down for the 90th time but then I was sobered up again when those wicked tunes for the titan fights started playing and made me forget I lacked a father figure

    Sonic Frontiers is much more packed than other recent Sonic games, with lots to do and comprehensive open zones. The boss fights far exceed most I’ve seen in platformers before. Definitely worth a buy if you’re remotely interested.

    Sonic frontiers has flaws, but it’s still a great game. Running around the open areas, especially with maxed out rings or speed is very fun and rolling down a hill gives you a TON of speed.
    The plot is just okay but it’s very refreshing from the pretty bad stories of colors, gens, lost world, and forces. Though there are some problems, there’s a ton of pop-in and the puzzles are WAY too    Sonic frontiers has flaws, but it’s still a great game.     It’s not a secret sonic has had some… questionable 3D outings but Frontiers blows all past games out of the water, Adventure type story, open world like never seen before in a sonic game, truly a phenomenal experience for someone who grew up with the blue blur, the open zones were a blast to run around and find all the secrets, the story although not too deep is a massive step in the right direction of serious story telling, for the first time maybe ever sonic didn’t have a single cringy line. My issues how ever come with some different things, the cyber space levels need MUCH better physics, the boss fights although cool need much more balancing cause half the time it felt like I was just pressing buttons and a 50/50 shot on if I’d do anything, the “true final boss” is also insanely difficult and can only be played on hard mode. Those were my biggest issues. The best thing about this game by far was the music, a very peaceful feel while running through the open world, but turns up the heat with some awesome metal tracks in the boss fights, absolutely incredible

    This game is good. It’s not on the level of Zelda, but it does still get a 10 from me. The story is nice, the little snippets of Sonic talking about other characters puts in some extra charm and is nice for Sonic fans who know all those characters.

When I first saw this giant evangelion-looking robot, I was initially intimidated, but when Sonic became Super Sonic and metal music started to play, I realized that I was the boss fight in this videogame. My only real gripe with the game is how the final boss wasn't the best and the ending wasn't what I had expected. Hopefully the DLC will help make this amazing game more badass in the end! If you haven't bought this game yet, I highly recommend you do because this game was soooooooo fun! Hopefully SEGA will give this rodent some more love because I am now a Sonic fan!… Expand

    Sonic team has undoubtedly given it a good go. I have enjoyed my time with this game, I hope sega iterates on this and adds/tightens the mechanics of this game in a sequel or continuation. Also, the soundtrack goes absolutely hard.

    As far as the story and adventuring around, I really enjoyed this game in a way that I haven't enjoyed a Sonic game in a long time. It's a step in the right direction on that front. There are technical issues that I assume will be patched out, or mods for the PC version could easily fix. It's a step in the right direction on that front. There are technical issues that I assume will be patched out, or mods for the PC version could easily fix. However, the cyberspace stages are not very fun at all even though I enjoyed the clear nods to stages from other games. There just seems to be a little something missing, making the world and the game itself have some emptiness even though there's plenty to do. I wish there were more meaningful moments in the world other than Sonic's occasional comment, like Sonic Adventure where you could carry around keys or take minecarts or ride on cars, stuff like that made the world fun and memorable to explore. The puzzles in Sonic Frontiers are fun to hunt down and do but I wouldn't say they're particularly memorable or anything like that. But this game made me extremely optimistic for the future and I really loved the story and the music. The characters felt more like themselves than they have in a while and I'm curious to see how they'll grow from their conversations in Sonic Frontiers. The boss music is always hype and there were some cyberspace stages that were worth playing a few times just so I could jam out. And I know I'm in the minority here but I actually really liked the final hardmode boss LOL I thought it was a lot of fun even though it was kinda out of left field. Looking forward to some performance patches in the near future so I can get started on my replay :)… Expand

    So... I can't say how incredibly pleased I am to come to Metacritic for the first time in a long time to whole-heartedly recommend a game. It was far, far from perfect but it blows the last 20 years of Sonic games out of the water.    I had a LOT of reservations about this game going in, I thought it was going to be a complete and total train-wreck, my expectations were at absolute zero.

    So... I can't say how incredibly pleased I am to come to Metacritic for the first time in a long time to whole-heartedly recommend a game. It was far, far from perfect but it blows the last 20 years of Sonic games out of the water.

    The open-world exploration translated fantastically, the score and original songs were on par with some of the series' best and the story was a lot of fun. Some of the references to past events felt a little forced, but at the same time it's a nice acknowledgement that Sonic Team seems to want to actually have some character development and depth going forward with the series.

    The "portal" levels were a bit hit or miss, I wish there had been more themes and styles used but for the most part it all flowed very well. I enjoyed how they expanded Sonic's combat repertoire and allowed you to pick between auto-chaining attacks or manual execution.

    The only major thing that left a bad taste in my mouth is the mis-mashing of art styles, with some of the early areas looking like they're from a tech demo and the rest being too realistic to fit into the Sonic universe. It's especially comical in the fishing mini-game. It wasn't enough to spoil the experience, but it was a very odd choice none the less.

    I hope Sonic Team learns from and builds on this formula in the future rather than just doing their normal thing and abandoning it all and trying something totally different.    … Expand

    Sonic Frontiers is hands down my new favorite game in the franchise. A lot of bold risks were taken with this entry and each and every one of them paid off. Throughout the adventure you're given four large open maps to explore, slide on rails, bounce around, collect rings and each one offers its own level of fun and excitement to see new things. Along the way you solve charming puzzles,Sonic Frontiers is hands down my new favorite game in the franchise. A lot of bold risks were taken with this entry and each and every one of them paid off. Throughout the adventure you're given four large open maps to explore, slide on rails, bounce around, collect rings and each one offers its own level of fun and excitement to see new things. Along the way you solve charming puzzles, play really fun levels like Sonic does best, meet friends old and new, and even find spots to fish. This game is so immersive you can really have fun going just about anywhere or doing anything, turn your brain off and enjoy the peaceful music, run around and have a good time, and always still be doing something productive while just taking it easy.

    That's not to say the game lacks intensity. For the first time in the franchise history there's a combat system that's actually a lot of fun and feels super rewarding to play, complimented by a skill tree and a growth system that always help you feel like you're getting better. Regular enemy encounters are already a delight, but the boss fights really bring a big excitement to an already thrilling game. The soundtrack for every battle feels like listening to something from Linkin Park or other rock bands of the era, always pumping you up and making you excited for each battle, and matching the incredible music with amazing visuals both from the bosses and Sonic himself. Music has always been one of the best parts of Sonic games and Frontiers doesn't shy away from keeping tradition. Much like the gameplay and visuals, the music is also at it's finest. Also the story is delightful and introduces a wonderful new character, while also flushing out the side characters better than any game in the franchise had before.

    While the levels are a lot of fun, I do wish the team had taken a few more creative liberties with the stage designs and gone with some new ideas instead of reusing Green Hills or the old Factory, and the final boss fight does drop the ball a bit by being only a quick time event on Normal Mode, and a mini-game on Hard Mode. These however are only minor complaints to an otherwise amazing experience that any Sonic fan old or new should go on. It's been over a decade since a Sonic game has really connected with me, and Frontiers did so much more than that. I can confidently recommend this game to anyone; it's new, it's different, it's exciting, it's fun, and it's just better. Better than any Sonic game that came before, and my new favorite.    … Expand

    Better than I thought it would be just by looking at videos. I really had fun playing it! A different concept but it works for the most part in my opinion.

    The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

    There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

    Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
