I never review but this game blew my mind, I own many PS5 games but this felt like the true experience; the game is gorgeous, the gothic artstyle is a huge improvement from 7.
The whole time i was playing i had a mix of anxiety and smiles on my face, the game has so many tense moments but all the enemies and bosses are unique and unforgettable.
I really hope we get another First-Person

I really hope we get another First-Person resident evil games, i know theyre not as popular but i really like the first person formula. Have to admit the bosses were excellent! far better than the combat/bosses in 7. Please use RE8 bosses as inspiration in future projects!

On PS5 this was optimised like a dream with only a few hiccups with fps drops during explosions etc; the seemless loading was noticable comparing to gameplay of pc and xbox.

Love the duke as a merchant mechanic! feel like there needed to be more to buy alongside the story being fairly short. I WANT MORE!!! hope to see some DLC!

Thank you Capcom for this easyyyyy game of the year

'Resident Evil 4' stands as my favorite title in the series, 'Resident Evil 7', a great example of reinventing a franchise, is also a great but different experience. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Village is an okay entry in the Resident Evil franchise. I really enjoyed the gameplay, but I lacked emotional connection to the main character Ethan due to the first person camera angle and the unpolished story. It's a great game, just not a good resident evil game. The story had so much potential and Capcom took the lazy way out with most of it. I feel like Ozwald Spencer and the Umbrella connection could have been written better. Like why wasn't Lady D. some sort of "Perfect Tyrant" creation/inspiration? Something more substantive that linked back to the original games we all know and love. After playing this game I am very disappointed in the direction of Resident Evil, especially after receiving a great RE entry like Resident Evil 2 Remake. Expand

Good for what it is but so much wasted opportunity big vampire lady should have had a bigger role and no not because of all the mommy crap and the 3 sisters should have been more interesting the whole thing just repeated the same **** as in 7 except much cheaper and way too easy I get the whole trying to make it less scary than 7 for the softies for some reason everyone thought 7 was terrifying when VR was mediocre and broke immersion when ever grabed but this killed the game for me I completed it in 9 hours it felt like I was speedrunning it felt like a small indie with few objectives kill a "boss" if you can even call them that I guess for most people they get scared and overthink which is were the false sense of a challenge is and im not a big horror guy either half the time im to scared to walk down the hallway but not in resident evil 8 I was in 7 but as the game progressed got more comftable but anyways in 8 with the bosses as i was saying if you take it slow as theres not realy any grabing scenes like there were in 7 you dont have to worry about geting close its like call of duty zombies just walk backwards alittle and its litterally following you ready to die like it was just handed on a platter the only good "boss" fights were the last 2 the rest was a joke even the story how the woman was your wife ect and hisenburg being into games its the exact same story from 7 and in the same order just less fun but most people seem to be obliviouse to this because most people that matter end up being youtubers that are never very good at games and tend to be overwhelmed by anything more than tetres there fore capcon listened to them simple people and brought nothing new to the table Expand

Haven’t really had a good scare in the game yet. Action is fun and the game looks great. Very weird how they don’t have any button to put away your weapons though. If you bring your knife or gun out, have fun staring at it until a cutscene finally puts it away for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge RE Fan, Village is Fun, But A Huge Step Back From 7/2/3.

First, let’s start off with some pros:

    - Insane replayability. Many people weren’t a fan of RE3 Remake, but I was, and I am super glad to see the unlock system/shop make a return here.
    - Length of the game compared to 7. This game is definitely longer, and due to the “action” nature of the game, it makes replays of it a lot more fun than 7, as the second half of 7 is much less enjoyable than the first half.
    - The boss fights for a Resident Evil game are surprisingly solid (except for one), which is rare for the franchise. Especially the final boss, it truly felt like a climactic battle.
    - Mercenaries mode is back! I don’t really need to say anymore, this honestly should be a series staple, and I was very disappointed in it being absent in 7, 2, and 3 (3 especially, that is actually sinful).
    - Unlockables encourage Replayability.

Now let's start to get into what irks me about this entry in the franchise. Village very much takes inspiration from 4 (almost to a complete fault at times), and unfortunately 5, and 6. Here are some examples with regards to 4 (Spoilers Ahead):

    - Shortly after arriving in the Village, we are once again faced with yet another “Village” sequence from RE4 (which has already been used 5) where the protagonist has to fight off or survive against wave after wave of enemies. Once again, towards the end, here comes a big enemy with a hammer to chance you down, just like the Majini back in 5...
    - The lycan enemies look like wolves, but are actually just Ganados and Majini completely reskinned. They even hold weapons in a similar fashion.
    - There are multiple weapons in this game, but unlike 4, each new weapon is a direct upgrade of the previous one, so it makes little sense to bother using the merchant to upgrade your older one (unless you are low on Lei, the game’s currency).
    - There is yet another “Lake” sequence yet again, with a very similar enemy to 4, but this time, instead of being on a boat, you are instead traversing on foot through a flooded village in a heavily scripted sequence where dying is not even remotely a threat.
    - Later on in the game, the setting switches to a factory where enemies are mechanical abominations. Some of these enemies are straight up rips of Garridors from RE4, just without the difficulty or strength.

Now let us look at some other aspects of Village that fall short of the mark:

    - The boss fight with Heisenberg is just completely awful for how great of a character he was. It was Resident Evil 6 levels of awful. Not only is this a straight up Call of Duty sequence, but Heisenberg’s transformation is almost as terrible and unbelievable as the Derek Simmons T-rex from Resident Evil 6. Just a terrible fight all around honestly.
    - On the topic of fear, RE8 is not scary at all save for House Beneviento (which lasts all of 5 minutes after the initial fear wears off).
    - The lake section that was previously mentioned is almost entirely devoid of combat until the boss, which takes place directly after another sequence entirely devoid of combat.
    - Lack of puzzles for how huge the map is was a bit disappointing too. RE3 Remake had significantly less puzzles than 2 Remake, so to see 8 also drop the ball here is very disappointing.
    - Ethan Winters is an uninteresting protagonist. His line deliveries are awful, the emotion behind his voice isn’t there, and the fact we still don’t see his face is just awkward at this point. Leon had emotion, even with his worse lines
    - As much as I love Chris Redfield, he had absolutely no business being involved with this story (and his playable sequence was not particularly fun either, as it mimicked his and Piers’ gameplay from RE6). I understand that Chris obviously has a relationship with Ethan thanks to RE7, but the job and investigative efforts that Chris performed in 8 are much more applicable to Ada Wong’s skill set. Yes, that would’ve made 8 seem even more like RE4, but Ada is undeniably a much better fit here.
    - The story revelation towards the end regarding the BSAA are dangerously heading into Ja’vo RE6 territory.

As you can already tell, I wasn’t a huge fan of this entry, but regardless of its drawbacks, it still was fun to play, and the unlockables keep me coming back, so on that alone, I give this entry 7/10. I am still extremely worried about the future of this franchise after this game, and I really hope Capcom somehow sees my grievances to at least recognize some drawbacks of this critically acclaimed entry.

A great blend of modern-day Resident Evil titles with a Resident Evil 4 vibe.

In my opinion, this title is probably one of the most refined Resident Evil games to date and it makes me wonder where Capcom is going to take the franchise next. Gameplay-wise, RE8 feels much more fluid in its movement compared to RE7, with the weapon-swapping similar to Doom Eternal. As the story goes,

It's sad to see how organic and natural Resident Evil 7 is with its concept to direction, but Resident Evil 8 fails as a child of Resident Evil 7, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game!

The game starts very well, somewhat fast, but very good. There, elements that make us weird are presented, elements of the story teeling, which is put into practice later in a very fun way and things sound very natural, with the exception of Chris hiding the truth from Ethan, he could say there , but, he does not say because of the script, however, it is interpretive and we can think of reasons why Redfield did not say there. When Ethan passes through the forest, reaching the survivors' stretch, WOW! the game there performs very well a break of expectation, which, here at least, is not bad, it just makes you more determined to move on. When you arrive at the scene of the discussion of Heinsenberg and Dimitrescu and the scene of the daughters together of the giant woman, we can see a certain promise (including marketing and trailers) of the game for what those characters will be, which makes you anxious to see them in practice and expect a lot from them. That's when ... the game starts to fail, the level design proves to be linear. Initially, the first daughter gives you the impression of a stalker half a nemesis, but linearity completely breaks this, due to the absence of a good time for this. Level design is based on what RE4 presents; you know scenario A and go to B and C, which automatically takes you to scenario A back, different from what RE, (including the wonderful RE7) would do, which would force you to pass the ABC scenario and then return from CBA , generating more gameplay time. the game is very automatic in the castle and this is one of the problems of why the daughters and Diminitrescu were wasted. The exterior geography made the castle look bigger, but inside, it wasn’t that grand, being more of a simple mansion (it seems to be smaller than RE1’s), and clearly, when we walk over the roofs, we see parapets and windows of places that never appear in the game, that is ... the castle is poorly explored in architecture, which means that Level Design could be longer, allowing for greater backtracking and time for the characters to be explored, but it doesn't ... The daughters are short-lived and Diminitrescu has a rough finish. You leave the castle upset, but in the meantime we return to the village, which is one of the highlights, where backtracking lives the most (except for the factor that bactracking sometimes seems very simple and obvious, but only in a few moments.). Finally, we go to the Beneviento house. The path to the place is incredible, we have a big house ... but again, poorly explored, we can even see corridors and passages that existed but obstructed (again, the level design could be higher), you have a surreal experience in basement with the big baby, but everything ends quickly, with the dolls at the end and a death ... that, discards a potentially wonderful character. We had seen how wonderful Marguerite in RE7 was as the owner of the second house, it wouldn't be a problem for them to do an extensive level design here with a tone of Silent Hills P.T., but no ... they prefer to abbreviate it. Moreau's part is ok, nothing incredible, but you don't expect much from him anyway, and it's cool anyway, a good comic and fun relief, impossible not to empathize with Moreau. Heinsenberg is common, however, THAT BOSS FIGHT IS **** RE6 STYLE, SIMPLY HORRIBLE, but Heinsenberg's motivation is very good. After that, the game seems to improve sharply. The story teeling starts to happen, a flood of plot-twist that involves you with Miranda, Chris, Megamiceto, Rose, HOLY **** OZWELL E. SPENCER AND UMBRELLA, ETHAN IS ALIVE everything happens very fast, yes .. BUT IN ANY WAY, VERY GOOD (probably lucky), leading us to an epic final battle and an... equally EPIC.

The game engages you at the beginning, leaves you in a term of love and hate in the middle and engages you by ejaculating at the end. His problem is be promised too much ... just like Marvel's Age of Ultron, he has all the good stuff, but it is due to lack of creativity, maybe fear and a lot of haste, it makes things very fast and badly used . It gives you a wonderful experience, but kills this at the best time or just gives nothing like they promised, unlike its predecessor, which promised, gave and a little more. An bittersweet game, but nothing cancels the fact that it is, anyway, a good game and great RE. But it could have been... a lot. much. much. much better.

Well i gaved 8 because is the most next of 7,5... 7 is pessimist.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With one foul swoop Capcom has ruined the resident evil legacy and lore. The revolation that Ethen is a molded creature and thus can't die and has been dead since the beginning of 7 takes away all rlthe stakes of these games. that his daughter rose who is a reincarnation of evalyn who is able to control molded creatures the same mold that the t-virus is made of basically makes her a god who is able to control army's of the undead in resident evil a series well known for happy living people. All this being cannon and tied to the series as a whole has lasting ramifications and basically **** on the series as a whole. By introducing imortal molded beings all you need is some mystic magic mumbo jumbo and boom you can create your loved ones who are dead from mold that can't die. Way to go Capcom you made resident evil six look good with this one. The voice actors apart from two are awful the narrative is insulting the puzzles can't really be called that and could be solved by a five year old it's rediculiously easy even on the hardest mode it never truly feels terrifying apart from that monster baby bit. It may have good atmosphere but you will find yourself lolling into a state of ease with not much challenging you. It's a shame really I think that there is a good game underneath all the **** bug you have to dig really hard to find it. Re:8 ruined 7 games not counting the spinoff so that puts the score to one and I give it a point for that god damn monster baby scaring me stupid so a Two! And I gave re:6 a three so yeah **** this game thanks for destroying the lore of one of my favourite game series I'm done with this series it's dead now Expand

fantastic action, not as scary as re7 but makes up for it unique bosses and areas. Game took me 13 hours but don't be fooled, it was a fantastic 13 hours with no lows. Imo games should be judged by the number of quality hours of gameplay it can offer and this game is worth the $60 price and so far is my favorite of the year. Game ends on a strong note and makes me excited for resident evil 9!

    Hmm hmm, Resident evil: VIllage
    First a foreword:
A game about an immortal American systems engineer, where "gg" follows his wife (Mia), and then also follows the child (Rose), not seeing anyone at all, in front of him and behind himself. I mean that he kills those who were not necessary or somehow to avoid murders, he stupidly kills everyone and everything. This is not about creeps (zombies, werewolves, etc.) but about the type of bosses. And in part, he himself, without any help, went into America's hole on his own. Whom that heaps of years ago his wife disappeared, and then boom and she sent him a video. And our hero did not think that this could be a trap or something else, and did not give this video to the police for examination. I went into the hole myself. Isn't he normal? Or, simply because of feelings, he did not begin to attach anyone, such as their family affairs, etc. Okay, these are all predictions, this is just a cutter.
So now let's move on to the resik itself:
From a technical point of view, the game's optimization is good, not perfect, but better than Ubisoft games (kill the software). The graphics are great, the beams work fine there without RTX. Textures are WOW, I have not seen such high-quality textures since 2019. Of course, you choose how much the texture memory will be fat. Bugs, yes they are. And in any games they are also there. And during the game I met only 2bags, this is when the werewolf flew and instead of Dimitrescu I was pursued by her dress.
About the plot: at first ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nothing is clear, and only from the middle and at the end everything starts to happen. Only now I did not understand one thing, so Ethan died and all this time he was out of mold, or Evelina ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ etc. Although ... At the end, Ethan's hand disappears like the other mold-dicks.
Bosses: there are 5 of them.
Miss Giant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (Dimitrescu): A woman with a butt larger than Ethan's head. And she has claws like Wolverine.
Dumb Doll (Beneviento): Just a wacky doll with a minus IQ. Her house is scarier than the whole 8rezik. Of course there is everything because of the golucinations, but damn it is dumb and scary.
Water moron (??? He only remembered that he was "Scarecrow"):
Niryaha and a very disgusting character who whines all the time that he is not loved and that instead of Ethan he should have been with her. In principle, we are similar to him (
Grigory Leps (Van Helsinki or Geisinberg):
The person who thought that Ethan was going a long way to save his daughter at any cost, would cooperate with him and give him the opportunity to kill Miranda with the help of Rose. And when Ethan rejects his request, he takes offense and wants to kill him.
    Miss deaf ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (Miranda):
While we were killing her "Children" there, she was sitting there. And that's all.
There are also secondary bosses, but there is nothing to say about them.
    Conclusion:
In general, the game is excellent, all those emotions that were in part remained, and even in some moments she simply smokes on the sidelines. It is definitely worth its 2000r, although it costs more on pine trees. I'm like a person who went through all the parts of the rezik starting from 2-3-4-5-6-7 and revelations. The first, alas, is not. I will give the game 8.9 out of 10. Sarah when you go through it through YouTube or from a PC or console, I assure you that you will be afraid of any rustle in the Beneviento house and in the Dimitrescu castle. On YouTube, I think it won't be so scary, but when you play yourself, your emotions will be doubled. But with Kuplinov everything will be fine too.
I spent 15 hours on the game, 7 of them completing, and the remaining 8 hours I spent on obtaining achievements.
If I wrote it wrong somewhere, it's because of my handshake or t9 is to blame.

Maybe it's because I grew up in England, but I don't find castles scary. School trips to various eras of castles in varying states of repair mean that whenever I see one in a film or game it doesn't create any particularly eerie feelings for me. RE7 on the other hand with a decaying house in the swamps was horror territory right from the off. It's these tonal differences why I much preferred RE7. RE7 had a strong cast of antagonists that were a terrifying mix of body horror and insanity, mixed with the aforementioned setting and you had a really tense Survival horror game. RE8s Villains, by contrast, are much more Saturday Morning Cartoon like with their plans. We also have a mismatch of styles here from undead like creatures/Vampires, to werewolves, to dolls, to cyborgs, if anything it's a little too much and could have used a bit more focus.

All that said it is fun to play, the first 30-40 minutes is a little too much on rails as is the last hour or so, but the time spent in the village is pretty awesome. Exploring the Village is where the game is at its strongest and the way it opens up revealing more hidden secrets each time you circle back is always fun. The combat is pretty snappy, but against some larger enemies in enclosed spaces it can be awkward to position yourself whilst maintaining aim, that said I came into this off the back of Returnal which ties movement and aiming together perfectly, so it's not RE8s fault that it felt a bit clunkier by comparison.

I feel like I've been a little bit down on this game, but it is a lot of fun. It's nowhere near as tense or memorable as RE7, but if more tongue in cheek horror themes are your thing I wouldn't be surprised if you preferred this game to the previous entry. For me it was a fun game, but not a particularly memorable one. It is absolutely gorgeous at times though.

The atmosphere is completely non existent and 90% of the game lacks any sort of tension. The plot and the dialogue are flat out laughable. The story, boss battles, and time spent at various locations feel rushed. The enemies remind me of characters from lord of the rings or dungeons and dragons. The gunplay is clunky and very similar to RE7, which does not translate well for this type of action focused gameplay. The game itself is not horrible, but it’s far from RE2 or RE7. Don’t expect a horror game if you give this one a go and make sure that you play on hardcore difficulty (standard difficulty was a breeze). The action focused direction gives me great concern for future releases and I will be tempering my expectations for the conclusion of this trilogy. Expand

The latest in the most iconic series in video game horror continues to deliver.

At long last the newest installment into the mainline Resident Evil franchise has arrived. Released 4 years after Resident Evil 7 and after 2 remakes it’s back to a brand new story.

Resident Evil is my second favorite gaming franchise and I absolutely loved Resident Evil 7, so I’m very excited to get a chance to talk about it like this.

Full disclosure, I was skeptical about buying this so early, I didn’t know if I was in a place where I felt like playing through a Resident Evil right now, while I enjoyed the castle demo that I played, I wasn’t too sold, but I decided to do it anyway because I guess I felt the need. Boy am I glad I did, spoiler alert for the rest of this review, but I am very happy with this game and I had an absolute blast with the 3 days I spent playing it.

Resident Evil Village take place 3 years after the events of Resident Evil 7, Ethan and Mia now living in Europe with their 6 month old, Rose. You have a cute little intro putting Rose to bed while being able to explore your house and find little callbacks to the previous game (newspaper articles, a Mr.Everywhere figurine etc) and discovering that Ethan and Mia are still haunted by the events of the Baker incident. You’re quickly interrupted by Chris Redfield and some soldiers who shoot Mia, take Rose, knock Ethan out and take you both away. Very soon you wake up and see your transport vehicle was attacked and you make your way to the titular village and he game truly begins.

This game really spends a while making you wait for something to happen, not in a negative way however, it just builds things up so beautifully that you want something to try to kill you to relieve the tension, you always wonder if those noises are enemies nearby or if it’s jut trying to build up more tension and add to the spooky atmosphere.

The game looks amazing of course, the Resident Evil engine continues to impress. The main village itself is absolutely beautiful, it’s a fantastic main area filled with snow and locked doors and plenty of secrets to keep coming back to as you progress throughout the story.

Game-play wise it’s mostly what you can expect if you played Resident Evil 7, aiming and shooting are identical (unless they’re are some intricate details that go over my head) typewriters are back for saving and they look fancier than ever before, goat statues are the new Mr.Everywhere/Mr. Racoon, you even have a car sequence. There are a few things introduced however, such as a heavily revamped crafting system to make healing items and ammunition, a charming little journal to keep track of the events of the story. You can also buy weapons, ammo, upgrades and items from “The Duke” using Lei collected from enemies and found along the way (who even given a cute little reference to the beloved Merchant from Resident Evil 4 if you pay attention)o Nothing huge added, but i don’t think it needed much, if it’s not broken as they say.

The game is not just a shooter as many people have assumed it to be, it has taken inspiration from a lot of things that re4 did right including the merchant system which feels really well done an. Also , hunting for animals and resources is extremely satisfying with the bonuses they give to health and movement. There are many horror elements, including the peculiar looking monsters and let's not forget, the terrifying fetus from the Beneviento house. Many such moments filled with suspense and horror. Characters are fantastic including lady dimitrescu, who unfortunately exists for 15% of the game. Each area is filled with unique treasures and resources which you could sell to the Duke to earn hefty amounts of coin. This coin can be used to upgrade weapons and buy critical resources for survival. Backtracking hence feels fun and rewarding. Every location is uniue and brings a new foray of enemies which get tougher throughout the game. The game's story is a tad bit hard to comprehend but sets the base fort he future resident evil games. 13+ hours easily taking all the treasures and backtracking. Plus the mercenaries mode makes this game worth every penny Expand

Resident Evil 8: Village is a first person survival horror game, and the follow-up to the stellar 2017 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, now with more action elements that it's prequel. Having played hours on my PS5 I think of it as an homage to the 25 years since the birth of the franchise, since it's clearly got influences from many games in the series, especially RE7 and RE4. ----------
    Location and world: 10/10
A Romanian village is your main hub that connects all the areas of the semi open world and it really shines. As a person that lives in the Balkans, it really looks not only beautiful, but also veeery truthful to the location it's set in. Now, there are many locations spreading outwards from the villages, such as the Castle and the Factory, each one with its own antagonists and with a very different tone overall. This, along with the loads of enemy types (compared to the RE7's much less enemies) makes the game much more interesting to play. I've heard that many people would probably buy it just for Lady Alcina Dimitrescu which only appears in a fraction of the whole game. Admittedly, when I first heard I was kinda disappointed, but, trust me, you will not get bored and you will see much more! ----------
    Gameplay: 9/10
Gameplay wise, RE8 uses a first person camera which I prefer to the third person view of RE2 just because it definitely increases the immersion. It is more action packed at some points, with guns and ammo, requiring nice utilisation and more horror packed with less guns and more scares at some other points. -----------
    Story: 9/10
The story is interesting once again with Ethan being the protagonist. Nothing extraordinary, yet likeable enough for you to get into the game and immerse yourself. I am not going to get into it, not to spoil that much for you, but I will tell you, it has its nice plot points and set of characters. It's simple like that of RE7, compared to RE6 which I think it was a bit crowded and too much was happening. The main story lasts 9-13 hours depending on your gameplay type, which is just a bit more than that of RE7, but it's replayability is even better, thanks to the many unlockables and the classic Mercenaries mode which is fun and action-packed. I could see myself playing 40+ hours before starting to feel bored of the game, which is very nice. ----------
    Graphics: 10+/10
I could easily give it more than 10 points if I could, just because it looks absolutely stunning. Definitely one of the best looking games I've ever played! You can clearly see the care the developers have put into making it as photorealistic as possible, even on old-gen consoles, probably thanks to the best use of RE Engine to date. You can see simple details other games don't even bother have, like tile textures etc. I am really impressed by Capcom on this achievement! ----------
    My verdict: 9.6/10---->10/10
Did you like RE7? You will probably like most of this one too. Did you like RE4? You will probably love this too. Are you a Resident Evil fan? This is a must have! This game is a very nice blend of Action and Survival Horror, which, in my opinion, even with its minor pacing issues is still a nice addition to your collection, especially with the Next Gen consoles having very few titles.
    P. S. Since RE8 is a sequel to RE7, make sure you have played the latter first!

RE8 is technically a sequel to #7. However, #8 doesn’t have the horror focus. I didn’t find any part to be scary except maybe the giant baby chasing you. This is a pure action game- FPS. It’s good at being an action game, but I missed the horror. There are a better variety of enemies than #7. There are some puzzles- but they are quite easy. And the game is easy overall. And the game is easy overall. Like most RE games there’s quite a bit of backtracking. There are several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming- that was probably the best part. Although the ending had some over the top components- I found it to be satisfying. It’s a short game- only took me 6hours 39minutes first time, 2nd time took me only 4.5 hours skipping most cutscenes. Doesn’t seem to be worth the money. It does imply a sequel after the credits- but not with who you might think. Overall I’d recommend it if you like action/shooter games. But if you want horror, then it’s not going to fulfill that need. Didn’t really see a PS5 difference- not many opportunities for ray-tracing. But graphics in the castle were stunning. I didn’t think it was nearly as good as #7. I’d give it an 7/10 or 3/5. Expand

Love this game lots off ammo takes the stress off. Between res 4 and 7 crossover. IMO this game is what they should turn the worst game res 4 into the best game on par with this one. I really don't understand why majority off people consider res 4 the best must be nostalgia for the old people, I'm old by the way.

The worthy sequel to RE7, the perfect mix between horror and action. Ethan is given the respect he deserves as the main character. Good characters and a very well planted connection with the first games. 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First - Reviews of this game are suffering from people who outright refuse to engage with the game on its own merits. It is not enough to say "I am upset with the direction of the series." It is reasonable, however, to note that this game might not "be a satisfying direction" for longtime fans. Problem is, it doesn't deserve a deduction in points along with that note. The only place this would be forgivable, is if you are longtime established critic whom people go to for Resident Evil/survival horror commentary. But even then, maybe give the game a fighting chance on its own terms?

Whine about subjectivity all you want. Maybe this is actually a refutation of scored reviews or the sorry state of gaming journalism, but reviewing is a critical thought exercise. You need to consider everything within its own context -- did the "text" (in this case, the game) set out to do what it intended to? Is it entertaining? Do the elements of intertextuality work? Is it scary? Does its world mesh?

To these questions and more, RE8: VILLAGE gives a resounding, if imperfect, yes.

The environments are beautifully realized in graphical quality and detail, but also in design. The way the world opens up is every bit as engaging as the Baker Estate from BioHazard. While VILLAGE of course takes a different tact in establishing tone, it does this successfully largely through its over-the-top locale. We have submerged ourselves in Gothic horror - something Resident Evil has always been taking inspiration from. Vampires are to mansions as mansions are to Frankenstein and zombies are to public buildings. They are tropes of the horror tarot that have been revolving since the 19th century and there are few more gothic settings than the Spencer House in the original Resident Evil. We've just gone whole-hog now. Vampires, werewolves are utilized well, and its nice to see them have a different origin than typical horror fiction tropes.

This game is referencing so much its mind-boggling: Dracula, Frankenstein, Lovecraft, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Chuckie, Children of the Corn, the Wolfman, Van Helsing, and more, more, more. It synthesizes these influences into a coherent "Disneyland" of horror. To tie back to what I started this review with: The game can claim this a success, because the environments and character are fully realized, existing alongside the fictional lineage they are a part of. The world and characters feel like they can coexist. This world now belongs to Resident Evil. And you feel it while you play.

Admittedly, the game leans farther into spectacle than hard character development, but horror should be judged on its atmosphere first and foremost. So, I'd argue this is okay. Rather than the suffocating scary-horror of BioHazard, we spend our time in the cool-horror of VILLAGE, but VILLAGE is not without its terrifying moments.

The gameplay is snappy and appropriately responsive, creating just enough tension in fights to keep you on your toes. The interaction with the game world delivers its own set of enjoyable and satisfying moments. It demands that you engage and pay attention in order to solve puzzles, and oscillates nicely from longer challenges that wrap quickly and shorter ones you need to solve under pressure.

Now for a couple of the things that take away from this experience.

    1. One area - Moreau's - is atrociously underdeveloped and -- honestly -- embarrassing. It is quick, simple, boring, the boss is underwhelming, and some areas are potentially a drag on your time. I managed through luck to squeeze by, but I imagine some folks got stuck on a **** bridge sequence.
    2. Some of the areas could have had a couple more rooms/sections added. I find this is an issue with many "AAA" games -- why not go the extra mile? This game would be a true classic if the castle, reservoir, and various passages contained just a tiny bit more.
    3. Normal mode is a little too easy, but hardcore is embarrassingly unbalanced. The first encounter probably had many people wishing they hadn't pre-ordered or bought the game. I'm all for a challenge, but this isn't that. It is unfair in design and quickly becomes tedious. It needs to be tweaked, especially since its probably the "sweet-spot" difficulty level.
    4. Some gameplay mechanics are explained wrong. You're told to bring food to the Duke, but if you sell him food before you unlock the cooking mechanic (the player doesn't know this is going to happen) those supplies are lost forever.

And that's really it. Everything else about this game is superb. If its a direction thats not for you, thats okay. Maybe look into its influences, give it a shot? Play through with an open mind.

I can't recommend it highly enough to horror fans or fans of Resident Evil.

Resident Evil Village is masterfully crafted in atmosphere, gameplay and level design. The great scope and variety of this game makes it very memorable. However the story to me is only good until the mystery is revealed.

Gameplay wise, there is a bigger focus on action but there is still enough survival horror elements to make it a stressful and even scary at times experience. It makes this game stand out from its predecessor while still feeling familiar. This game is meant to be played on hardcore difficulty. Every encounter felt intense and required a lot of resources to overcome. This is perfectly balanced with the new Duke merchant where you can buy and upgrade weapons as well as resources. The sense of progression in this game is very satisfying. There is also a big focus on exploration to find rare animals, treasures, weapons, attachements and secret rooms which requires you to solve optional puzzles and sometimes fight some hidden mini-bosses. This game offers a lot of variety. Each zone has a different environnement and a distinct feel. They all feature varied enemies and the gameplay focus for each zone is different.

One small gameplay misstep is last section in which you play from a different perspective. It ditched the formula RE is know for in favor for a COD like section. It is too linear and would have been better if it shared more similarities with RE7 not a hero DLC.

Now lets talk about the story (without spoilers) which to me wasn’t very good. From the beginning to the final act you are kept in mystery which is good for this kind of game. However, in the last hour, they reveal too much plot details and twists that are poorly explained. The main vilain’s background and her motivations are only explained in a note and the way she infected the whole village is only hinted at during the credits. It would have been nice to have a flashback of her past to humanize her (like Jack in RE7) and the game had the opportunity to do so since one of its theme is shared consciousness and memories. Instead of a more grounded story isolated from the overall RE lore (like RE7), they wanted to have higher stakes than just you and your family while still keeping it personal but it felt too disconnected from reality to have a big impact.

I preferred Ethan as a blank protagonist because the dialogue in this game is poorly written. At times, it was very awkward. Unlike RE7, it didn’t feel like I was watching real humans interacting with each other. It turned this game into the story of a goofy faceless father instead of being the player’s story. On a positive note, the 4 first vilains and the duke were well written and charismatic.

Overall this is a great game. The gameplay is satisfying and addicting. There is something to love for both fans of action and horror. The mystery throughout the whole game will have you searching for answers. If it wasn’t from the last section in which the story and gameplay fall appart, Resident Evil Village would have been a masterpiece.

When I tried out the Demo my thoughts were: "meh Vampires, Werewolves, come on Capcom. Did you confuse RE with castlevania?.. but at least the gunplay is nice and my god the game looks beautiful. think I'll give it a shot."

    I'm glad i did.

I finished my first playthrough in 8 1/2 hours, which doesnt seem that long given the price I paid for it. Other AAA-games double or triple that with ease. But where others (for example AC Valhalla) bored me to death with their empty interchangable characters and story, Resident Evil 8 shines with a quality experience. Particularly that grotesque cabinet of well written and acted characters, the villians could be taken straight out of a Tim Burton movie. Not to mention the pacing and plot twists, which i didnt expect at all to be that compelling. All in all definitly a memorable Adventure.

The graphics, oh my god, the graphics. I have rarely found myself wondering in awe at a Game that much. For me Resi 8 joins the ranks of Horizon Zero Dawn, Control, Cyberpunk, Tomb Raider and AC Odyssey/Valhalla. (I know there are more, but those were the most stunningly looking that Ive acutally played). Its not only that the textures, the lightning, reflections and all the technical shenanigans are great, but its the balance of light, shadows, coloring, reflections etc. that makes this game truly shine. Capcom managed to find the sweet spot to set the perfect tone for Ethans second Journey through the Marcabre.

The sound design, for me is always the special child. From the roaring of the beasts or the sound of the guns to the little rustles, snaps, creaks and cracks. All those litte details that were added, Capcom absolutely nailed it. I found myself all too often cramped up in my chair holding my breath in tense situations, to a good portion thanks to the superb sound design and muscial composition.

Last but not least, the gameplay. For the most part Resi 8 follows the same phases. Get to a new area, kill boss, explore for extra loot, upgrade stuff, repeat. Sounds simple,.. and, well it is. But you dont really need much innovation, when the structure you built is filled with Quality content. E.g. the balance of loot and currency/treasure for upgrades. I never felt having an excess of either, but also never felt like there was an all too threating shortage as long as i played it smart (on Standard difficulty). This kinda stands symbolic for the whole gameplay experience. Also got to mention, in my almost lifelong career as a gamer i have probably killed a thousand bosses, but after some of resi 8`s bosses I was just smiling, thinking:"F**k, that was awesome.." Capcom has to have done something right achieving this. I guess, its a mixture of all the things ive stated above.

Conclusively, Resident Evil 8 follows a simple recipe, but a simple recipe done right.. and that all the way. The sound, gaphics, story, map, riddles, gunplay etc... the whole feeling of it. And sadly nowadays you have to state that (at least in my exp.) they did it bug free. *looks over at CDPR with visible dejection*

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
