RE Village has awesome graphics, great sound design, a pretty good story and fantastic production value, but RE's game-play has never felt more barebones, it's puzzles simplistic and its horror elements diluted. If you enjoy movie games, this game is great. But If you prefer game-play oriented games, I would not recommend RE Village.

The only part of the game that stopped me giving this higher was the factory part. It felt too Wolfenstien for me, I hated the drill hands and propeller face. But overall the story was captivating and I enjoyed it, the final act was brilliant. Well done capcom. Expand

As a perfectionist, I beat the games after 12 hours, (which is far more considering that the usual beat time is around 9 hours), but I truly enjoyed discovering every single piece of each location and to find all the sectors possible – that's what good game is supposed to do to you.

Resident Evil 7 was a great game too, but Village plays and feels like a much more serious AAA title with a great open-world, which 7th lacked.

So fat the best game of 2021 and one of the best RE entries so far. 10/10.

I love the RE Franchise but sometimes I found that the games were lacking for my personal liking. With RE:Village I wanted to dig back in at it and give it a try. It has a good variety between action and horror in my opinion and the set of enemies and weapons gets you going pretty well. Overall this game is to me a 8.5 moving up to the 9 because of personal tendency.

I ve been playing the game on my PS5 with no issues so far. I didnt feel any fps drops (playing with RT off). The games looks beautiful although some textures lack a bit of detail. Generally the engine provides a very atmospheric result in both outdoor and indoor parts for action and horror bothways which is quite impressing. Starting with RE2:Remake the sound design improved drastically and I feel this continued with RE:Village. If you can use headphones or a decent surround system this game is absolutely amazing with the depths it can provide.

The game mechanics itself are well known. I feel the inventory and save system went for the better. Overall the weapon and upgrade system seem fair and provide good content over time. I find the game lacks a bit when it comes to boss fights. They feel very innovative yet they are very dull and bullet spongey. There is not much skill applied most of the time and feels a bit grindy. Yet the boss designs are fantastic with great variety which I honestly enjoyed a lot although it might feel a bit drifting away from the RE main core.

With all difficulties, weapons, mercenary mode and challenge the game provides at least 8-12 hours of straight story gameplay and probably around 20 to 35hrs for completionist which justifies the launch price for fans otherwise I suggest to wait for a discount of 10-20% for a better deal. I definitely do recommend the game it feels very different if you actually play it instead of watching videos or streamers. It is really enjoyable and for a surprising touch the story isnt too bad either.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 9 hours and 30 minutes and 420 gamerscore, I was done with the latest Resident Evil offshoot. Folks, great for me, I had so much fun with it and even started the game all over again. To classify: so far I have played Resi 2 (8/10) and 3 Remake (7/10) as well as Resi 7 (9/10). For me, Resi 8 has sat on the throne of this series.

    story
The game is still quite fresh, so I won't write much about the story (including some spoilers), except that I liked the whole process around Ethan Winters, I was very happy with the twists and turns and was sometimes surprised. This cabinet of horror curiosities that you face, the fantasy setting brought a change for me that I found terrific.

The individual characters do their part, especially Lady Dimetrescu has been shown excellently.

I just felt it was a shame that it was over a bit quickly with the good lady and her daughters, they were just used for the beginning and I always ran right intuitively, which is why I got through relatively easily. The facial expressions, gestures and dialogues of these vampire ladies were wonderful and I wanted to see more of them.
But the other members of this gang also had their moments.

    graphic

The game looked really great. The setting fits me perfectly and it ran smoothly on the Series X. I actually had no noticeable frame rate drops, although sometimes a lot can happen on the screen. The selected landscape, the various facets of the individual areas, create a coherent and well-designed overall picture for me. Every now and then I stopped for the photo mode (unfortunately it wasn't that great, somehow the pictures sometimes looked strange) and marveled at the landscapes or just the inner workings of the houses, the castle, etc.

There is a lot of love for detail here and one or the other Easter egg can also be found.

Atmospherically, it was also successful for me, because the horror parts also exude real horror for me, but perhaps could have been a little more.

    Gameplay

So first of all I have to say that Resident Evil is incredibly varied (horror, Mr. X gameplay, puzzle passages and skill passages, pure action). But I can understand if some e.g. the horror aspect was neglected. To be honest, that was enough for me and after this very specific part of the game I was exhausted.

    That breathed pure horror.

The start of the game is as crazy as it is ingenious, I just sat with my mouth open in front of the PC and couldn't believe what I was seeing: Werewolf people who ride horses and shoot with a bow and arrow.

The first half of the game is also very different from the second half and I personally found the gameplay change to be quite successful. Especially after the turn mentioned, the game briefly takes on completely different forms. It is precisely this point that will probably split people's minds (if not a little earlier in the factory).

Each of the individual opponents gets their moment and all of them are consistently interesting. Just the introduction of all of these was phenomenal.

We also have the classic Resi weapon game play, which is a bit sluggish, but also wants to be that way. I got along with it, but I probably wouldn't have made it higher than normal. The ammunition in particular is pretty precisely measured towards the end. The inventory was incredibly pleasant and was a significant step up from Resident Evil 7. The dealer was also a lot of fun and the upgrade system was very motivating (I love the revolver, unfortunately I never really had a lot of ammunition for it). The weapons themselves are very well chosen, I have actually tried everything and did not find any weapon to be useless. I also used mines, bombs, firing flour to distract, and so on.

So the action turned out very well for me and got even better later. In addition, the game offers some intermediate bosses, where you really have to use all means to combat.

There are also puzzles and smaller mini-games, but they were all pretty easy, I have to admit, and could have been a bit more challenging. The classic texts for reading should of course not be missing and I tried to absorb everything.

If you play the game through then you have the opportunity to unlock some things for further rounds of the game. There is a mercenary mode in which you simply have to eliminate opponents in a certain amount of time. Not particularly exciting but the bonuses that can be unlocked are worthwhile: There's a damn lightsaber available as a double blade 5/5.

I only have to criticize the level of difficulty, which was actually suitable for me on normal (also had problems) but the lock was way too easy. Also, some boss fights were a bit boring because they just endured a lot.

    Conclusion

I have so little to criticize here because I just had too much fun with Resident Evil Village. I can certainly understand when certain decisions by the developers are not considered to be good, but I always had fun. For me 10/10 Mushrooms

While I don't think it's better than RE7, I do think that Village was bold enough to come close.

The two first things that astounded me when I pressed start on this title were the graphics and sound design. Capcom nailed it AGAIN with the RE Engine, as they have been hitting the perfect spots since 2017. The soundtrack might not be very memorable, but the haunting sounds and imagery of the village will forever stick with me.

After being in awe with Village's incredible presentation and set-up, I fell in love with the gameplay. Yes, the similarities with RE4 are all there, from gameplay, to pacing, mechanics and even story bits, but the biggest comparison should be done with RE7. Basically, RE8 carries over its previous installment's gameplay, but perfects it.
Every addition made to the gameplay loop worked perfectly. Ethan moves better, aims better, the Duke is not only a great character but also a fantastic shopkeeper, the ingredients system keeps you invested and everything else was well-developed in order to make the exploration and combat feel joyful to play. And they did it.
And not only exploration and combat were tweaked for the better, but puzzle solving too! Each puzzle feels light and not frustrating at all. Backtracking is rarely a chore and the interconnected levels are brilliant. I love this soft-puzzle-solving approach that Capcom has been taking the RE series and I hope they keep it up.
One other thing, this game was the easiest Resident Evil that I've played in a long while and while I don't think that this is objectively bad at all, I do recommend playing on harder difficulties if you enjoy the "survival horror" challenge.

Village's atmosphere is also one of the main things that kept me hooked. I felt that, like RE4 did in the past, RE8 manages to perfectly balance horror and action moments. Things get a little out of hand during the final hour, but it never felt out truly of place. Sure, it's not as scary as RE7 or RE2REMAKE, but it DEFINITELY kept me on edge and tense throughout the entire experience.
    **** that Beneviento ****

And the story: I also loved it!
Probably one of the craziest stories told in an RE game. Ethan, his family and even Chris are way more fleshed out than in RE7, and not only that, but the main cast is presented along with plenty stunning supporting characters. The Duke, Dimitrescu and her daughters, Heinsenberg, Miranda, Beneviento, Moreau and even Chris' goons or the poor villagers - they're all great!
Each area of the game is varied enough and fits perfectly with each villain. Environmental storytelling, packed with the stunning level design, was key to make it all work. Nothing felt out of place and the story benefits greatly from that. From beginning to end. It's surprise on top of surprise. And better yet - most of them were written pretty well!

Few things prevent this game from being the masterpiece that RE7 was. I'll be brief.
The thing that most bothered me is how little the story showcases its biggest strenghts. Despite being very good, Village has TOO MANY good things to show, and they do show them, but not for long! I just wish they expanded more about characters and the village itself. Especially during the final moments of the game.
Village didn't need to be longer, just... a bit broader?
The story also had the weirdest post-credits scene. If it wasn't for that, everything would fit naturally.
In my opinion, RE8 did little when they had a lot and RE7 did the opposite, which worked better.

Gameplay-wise, I didn't like the amount of missable items and areas. I mean, yes, if you miss them, it's your fault, but I wish there were indications about missing them other than the map.
And while the bosses were mostly very good, one of them felt a little too.... anime?
Also, the final hour of the game is TOO fast-paced. It does answer plenty of questions, but they say goodbye to the scary atmosphere and hello to FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. I didn't like that very much.
Oh, the Mercenaries mode! It felt ok, but not as fun as in RE4 or RE5. Shame, though.

I could spend hours talking about Resident Evil Village. It truly is an amazing game, with a few minor issues here and there.
Thank you for this game Capcom. Just give them your money, whether you're a survival horror fan or an action shooter freak.

    Now give us RE9, already.

Resident evil village is a mix of the old and a mix of the new.. This is a first person survival horror game with more of an emphasis on weapons than purely sneaking and sriviving.. which works in this setting, but I would’ve liked this to be more gradual.
Here once again like in resident evil 7 you play as ethan winters, searching for his daughter rose after their home is ambushed and the both of you are kidnapped, you find yourself in a village full of vampire meets werewolf character, and its so refreshing to not deal with lame zombies or mold creatures.. these enemies are terrifying when you first run into them… but I woulve loved a gradual lead up to actually getting some weapons in hand muck like in resident evil 7.. sneaking around this village, sneaking through the castle trying not to get caught as you got the items you needed, until finally you get a weapon, blast your way out of the castle and destroy the enemies in the village.. instead I almosti mmediatly felt untouchable.. which really killed the scary aspect of village for me.. there were definitely erie moments here for me.. but I never felt terrified the way I did in past resident evil games.. but as a more action almost first person devil may cry feeling game… village is great.. and I absolutely love the attention to detail and variety here… resident evil village is constantly switching up the areas as you set out to take down multiple targets in a vastly different setting from eachother.. theres so much to collect, find and upgrade like the older resident evil games, with the map color indicator letting you know when you’ve grabbed everything, and these a shop that just pops up along your journey to upgrade your weapons, buy ammo, or sell these crystals you pick up off of enemies, really giving you incentive to be aggressive here.. trying to afford all of the upgrades you can for your weapons..
Resident evil village does get a little lame and obring in its final stretch. .but they all do.. but not nearly as bad as 7 biohazard… if youre ready for resident evil to get back to the way it used to but don’t want to let go the creepiness first person adds to the series.. resident evil village is a perfect mix.. I do again just wish they tried to scare me a little bit more… much like in the maiden demo… more of that mixed into resident evil village, and this couldve reached masterpiece level..
    I give Resident Evil Village
    a 9/10

Expand

The game is not bad, however it is not great either. RE7 was such a breath of fresh air in the series, especially after RE6. It does not help that between RE7 and RE8 we got RE2 remastered which is an absolute masterpiece. I feel like capcom tried to do too much with this game. If the rumors of this starting out as revelations 3 are true I can see that.

Instead of a more grounded experience like RE7 we get a hodgepodge of RE7, RE6 and RE4. And like this game, sometimes it feels great and sometimes its cheesy. First person worked in RE7, while in this game it just feels clunky, restrictive and overall bad.

I wont spoil the story but even the final "boss" makes fun of how you have to go through each area to progress. It does not feel as natural as RE7 or RE2 remake. Most of the puzzles are laughably easy. And even on hard the game is just way to easy. They throw money, gems and valuables at you left and right.

Overall I do not hate this game like some other RE games. But compared to others it comes off a little flat for me. Again, not a bad game by any means, just not great either.

The rest of the game is a fairly competent first person survival game at its heart that, while fun to play and engrossing, really makes you wonder where they are going to go from here with the horror aspects in the next game.
Easily this game features one of my most favorite horror sequences in gaming, and in entertainment in general. Its frankly that good but is over in almost a flash. It's also fairly early in the game, coming in around a 1/3rd of the way through. The rest of the game falls back on the action survival 1st person experience. It's done fairly well but really falls into an action first mentality, especially towards the final half of the game. While its not bad, I really wish we could have had at least 1 more horror segment of the game. As it stands, even with the amazing second area here, RE 7 was a much more horror-focused experience. But I'd say this was a better overall game. The overall story is fairly well done and sets up for many more games after this one, as well as some possible spin offs that might come about.
I'm very worried about how Capcom will handle those future elements. They've already come out and said they let off the horror pedal alot because of some backlash from RE 7 and it shows quite a bit here. It really makes me worried that they will discard it entirely, like they did with 5-6, and focus heavily on the action set pieces. I would still play those games as the action here is fairly good. But its clear that whoever is in charge of the horror aspects for this game knows what they are doing and it would be a massive shame if that element is taken away from the series yet again. Resident Evil became scary again with RE 7 and the horror elements here really show that they might be the best in the business when it comes to pure horror. I'm just afraid that the people who dont like horror might say this was too much and they will strip it from the next installment. That would be such a massive disappointment as its clearly the best part of these games.

On the other hand, they ALSO use all the bad ideas in the idea bucket, and a lot of the more uninteresting ideas are thrown in around the latter half, so the end left me feeling exhausted by it. The story is pretty stupid, but that's the point. They go all in, holding back just enough to maintain that creepy atmosphere throughout, all while being self-aware (much like RE4). It's more action-oriented than RE7, but devotes enough energy to tension and horror that it actually manages to be scary when it wants to be. The big dollhouse "surprise" is undoubtedly one of the most horrifying things I've ever encountered in a video game.

RE8 borrows a lot from other games, especially RE4, but doesn't compromise its own identity in the process. I prefer its predecessors, but I may grow to appreciate Village more in time and with subsequent playthroughs.

Intense boss fights, feel like the difficulty was dialled down slightly in order to prioritise the experience. Felt a bit short changed with (the lack of) Lady D, but somewhat offset with the genuinely terrifying escape room style boss.

But let me clarify... The game mechanics, graphics, music, art direction, mo cap, etc... is all incredible. Clearly a AAA product. Not a bad game or waste of money. But it's not Resident Evil. Not like 7 was. 7 had the slow brooding atmosphere and dense horror aura. It's was bleeding survival horror from it's very core. 8 isn't like that at all. It's an action shooter mixed with Amnesia/Outlast Style horror. They tried to make it work with mold and how the EVE virus function's overall. But... Werewolves, vampires, whatever stupid doll horror movie's there have ever been, Terminator 4 Dawn Of Fate or whatever, Retconning the origins of spencer's research, full blown re4 style action sections that feel so out of place and tacked on. All of it feels like a stretch for the lore. They really need to take the series back to it roots. Imagine zombies, hunters and survival with the RE Engine!!!
8 almost had some great puzzles but, of course they were made too simple because capcom doesn't understand it's core fanbase. Money Money Money. There was a great piano puzzle that would have required actually thought and research for a non musician... but of course you can get past it by slamming every key until it gives you the answer. I was almost stumped because I got Treble Clef and Bass Clef mixed up in my head. But no... I noticed it was giving me the answer when I picked the wrong note to many times. Sigh... The generic doll horror movie sections was another wasted opportunity for great puzzles. I was getting a lot of old school silent hill vibes. But it was tedious and extremely straight forward. Not a terrible section for a horror game overall. I got scared. It was tense. But the potential... Again... A lot of work went into this game and it for sure has cool part's. It's just all rushed as a whole and feels very hollow for an RE game.

    First, the "bads".
People are complaining about 2 things mostly :
    - Lack of Zombies! (Indeed, I can confirm, this RE is on a different theme so far...)
    - Game is not scary (Well that's a different kind of scare so far, indeed, I don't feel like **** my pants in horror but I do feel the tension, my heart is pounding at times, not scared but pumped up!)

So all in all, yeah it feels sort of different from the classic RE games so far but I'm really having a blast!
I do share the toughts about the game feeling polished, been crafted with care for details.

I also read a lot about this being a sort of mix between RE4 and RE7, that's a pretty accurate perception.

Killing stuff so far seems "Just right".
Monsters (or whatever you wanna call them) takes the right ammount of damage before diying and they are smart enough to put up a challengeing fight without feeling unfair.

It's nice seeing a PS5 title being playable and mostly fluid with ray tracing ENABLED and looking great!

I only played about 2h so far playing it slow paced trying to see/find everything the game has to offer and enjoying it to the max!

Easy 9/10 so far and I'm not rating it 10 cause I'm keeping myself a margin of error but if it keeps up, I might correct it for a 10 by the end of my playthrough.

One minute we're fighting werewolves, bats and Dark Souls inspired zombies to mechanical, borg like machines and then back in tentacles and sludge territory (like that hasn't been done a million times over in games).

The level designs are for the most part ok and atmospheric but boxy. Massive let down if you're expecting a truly creepy and enthralling horror epic however. It fails to be that. Certain areas and bosses are totally lackluster (the puppet level comes to mind. What a let down!) and the Merman, Lovecraft level which was totally just a run through with a boss chasing you. All empty and boring stretches of nothing. While action packed if you like FPS and definitely taking a more RE5 approach, it's tedious right from the start once you realize the extremely small amount of effort Capcom put into this.

Capcom once again just makes another over the top and way over staying it's welcome sort of game. Went on for too long in my opinion which is mainly the fault of the boring and slow cutscenes. Ethan Winters is a boring character. The dialogue is cheesy and lame. The plot is predictable and the ending a let down.

Wait for a discount to play this and wait for real horror developers to release something more worthy of being a horror title.

I think the simpler the story is in a RE game, the better it is. Is it scary ? Well, there is one moment that is sooo scary, i almost wondered if could play it, but overall, not that much. I understand why, the dev team wanted to do an experience that was closer to action than horror compared to RE 7. I don't think they failed in the scares department if their goals was to make this game a bit less scary. Am i disapointed by this ? A bit. The change between the first and second halves feels like a gradual drift from the sinister tone of the last game, to Revelations' louder, fun action movie vibe. That said I'm going to have to try to explain as much as I can without spoiling anything, because Capcom has impressively managed to keep about 90% of the game secret and only shown off the first maybe three or four hours. Amazing game, one of the best in the franchise, if not the best. Great successor to RE7. Really scary, especially at one part

Every time you give them your money you allow them to put out garbage like this. 'Oh but the OG resident evils were short!' - Yes in the 90s. Decades ago. Its blatant that theyre botting metacritic because in no way is this game a 10. Wait for the shill cheques to clear and then see what people really think of this game before buying. I do not like The zombie's tales, but this has a immersive atmosphere and makes you fell a constant tension with puzzles and combats again wolfmen and black criatures. One of the games I have played I like more.

+ Firstly, I would like to mention that resident evil 4 is my favorite game in the series. Considering all the similarities(village, castle, plagas style enemies) i was hyped from the start.
+ I thought game was going to be action orianted more than a scary game but this game manages to achieve both in an incredibly good way.
+Especially house beneviento part gave me P.T. vibes. They did

+Story, gameplay, exploring, boss fights, intense chase scenes. This game really felt like a true resident evil after all.
+ After first 3 boss fight game turns into more like an action game but also manages to keep the tension. Factory part made me feel like i was fighting regenerators from re4 again. Game turns into action but not a boring one because there are still lots of puzzles to solve and places to revisit. Game keeps its momentum stable pretty good.
+ I literally cannot find anything negative to say.

Some will say CAPCOM has deviated from the series by a long way, via the style of gameplay, story, characters and scope of these new titles. Each segment doesn't overstay its welcome, the momentum continues. It looks amazing, even on PS4 - and after a while, you even get used to Ethan's one-liners. While obviously not up to the standard of perhaps, Leon in RE4.

Super happy overall, but there's something missing that i can't put my finger on just yet. Perhaps a second play through will distill this.

Its just as good as 7
But fixes a lot of the problems of that game and expands upon it
The story is good, the characters too and the gameplay is fun It IS easier but that it fun, the store is a really good addition and there's inventory management like in RE4, the game ks a bit shorter than I would liked but overall a great addition to the franchise, hopefully they keep doing good games

What can I say, Its a great game. From a mixture of horror, action and survival with a good story added to it. The acting is great. First person to me makes the game more immersive. It took me roughly about 10 hours 30 mins to beat on my first playthrough and I didn't even search for everything in the game. If you enjoyed playing RE7 then you will definitely enjoy RE8. I much preferred this game over RE7. That being said I give this game an 8.5/10! Expand

I’ve played every resident evil and this entry just blew me away... the game itself is an absolute love letter to the series as a whole. So so so much attention and care went into this game and in my opinion this is now best Resident Evil game ever made. This game deserves the love it gets and so so soooo much more. Mwah! DLC side story maybe(?)

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
