I haven't played a game that has enthralled and impressed me since I played NieR Automata as Horizon Forbidden West. It is better than the original game in every way. I really like the story and how it tends to veer more into the sci-fi aspects. Despite being developed in Europe, it reminded me more of a JRPG than a western game (in a good way). It does have an open world but, I like the fact that one can just go through the game relatively in a linear fashion if the open world isn't your thing. It doesn't get bogged down in aimless roaming around as some other open-worlders. I don't think it's quite as good as Automata but, it is still a masterpiece. Expand

Everything from combat, traversal, gear, and story have been taken to another level. The story may go "too sci-fi" for some, but personally I loved it. The stakes are raised in meaningful ways throughout the game, coinciding with more advanced combat and traversal mechanics that are perfectly paced throughout the game. Everything is woven together masterfully to create a believable world with amazing characters. Side content has as much depth as main story quests, so everything feels meaningful and has a tangible effect on the game's world.

If you loved Zero Dawn, this one is a no-brainer. If you never played Zero Dawn, I would suggest doing so before diving into this game. You can still appreciate this game without playing the original, but this game delivers amazing payoffs for those who did invest their time in Zero Dawn.

+Gameworld has very good design and is a great fun to explore
    +Very interesting premise, captivating story
+Innovative gameplay, albeit maybe too much complicated
+Amazing attention to detail +Great to be able to discuss things with GAIA, but I expected her to have more answers (it does make sense within the story)
    - All Terraforming subfunctions except Hades were a letdown (why didn't we get a short conversation with each of them)?
    - For some reason, the Base is not customizable (despite NPCs customizing it themselves)
    - Overall decreasing quality of writing over the course of the game; The overarching FZ plot didn't really make sense for me (motivation of the villains); the built up fear of the FZ underutilized; less attention paid to dialogues (characters abandon "tribal" vocabulary and use the same idioms and words as modern people do, compared to the first game)
    - Dialogue options are even less meaningful than in the first game
    - The tenacity of the Tenakth was scaled down compared to the trailers and overall expectations (based on conversations from the first game), essentially played down as Carja propaganda. No fear whatsoever coming from them. Kind of a letdown
    - NPCs underutilized to a great extent. Erend does basically nothing over the course of the entire game, and he's not the only one. My cons are longer but it's mostly tough love. My rating is 7-8/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILER ALERT!! Main story: 8.3 out of 10. - First I would like to say I enjoyed the story, and fully completed the main story. Pros: -New interesting characters.
-Voice/acting is engaging characters have more personality and emotion.
-Returning characters from the previous game
-Antagonists (Zeniths) add weight to the story
    -Pacing is good enough
-Cinematic cutscenes are high quality CG

    Cons:
    -Too many plot holes
    -Unrealistic decisions by Aloy
    -Character names are forgettable
    -Only three Zenith boss fights
-When someone dies there is no weight and little emotion from other characters.
-Sylens creates a device with not enough explanation which takes out all Zenith shields. Even Tilda’s shield even though she was nowhere near the blast.
-Too many plot twists. First Hades is weakens and destroyed by Sylens and Aloy. Now there is a new threat of Trillionaires who were from earth that became aliens and are here to supposedly reclaim earth. Finally the Zeniths are just planet hopping to get away from Nemesis an even more powerful AI entity that is headed to earth.
-The ending is set up for a third game which pulls a new threat out of the writers bum and says anticipate for the new threat on the next game.
-Aloy decides to not take the spaceship with her friends and leave earth. So they will fight (Nemesis) in the next game.

Graphics: 10/10 -better than Last of Us 2
    -Lots of color
-Vegetation is hand placed specifically by team of artists, not AI generated
-The sky and time changes are clear and beautiful. Day, Afternoon, Night, morning. You can see all the individual stars in the sky with the moon lighting.
-The Guerilla games engine is amazing the ray tracing is phenomenal. HDR can be a little tricky to get the right settings.
-Environments are incredibly detailed from the grass, sand, dessert, and water biomes.
-Texures of characters skin is and hair are great. The in game model and and cutscene models are almost the same.
-Texures of all environments are in native 4K clear to see.
Best graphics on PS5 so far.

Side missions: 9/10 I have completed 90% of all side missions
-Most of the side missions are engaging and interesting.
-Some side missions reward Aloy with legendary armor
-Most side missions have high quality cinematic cutscenes.
-Errands missions are like C+ tier side missions.
-Salvage Scrap missions are tedious but you get the Legendary armor: Oseram Articifier once all salvage missions are complete.
-Rebel outpost missions are boring to me but level Aloy up.

    Skill Tree: 7.9/10
    -Two special supers are overpowered
-The rest of the supers are really not that effective
-There is a lot of ways to play the game based on the skills you decide to level up.

Combat: 7.7/10 -The combat has improved where you can learn new moves
-skill tree improves combat and there is valor super to enhance it.
-Overall it seems the same in terms of how the spear images impacts an enemy it feels like your not doing damage.

Overall score of Horizon Forbidden West: 8.8/10

I'm almost upset that they didn't charge $100+ for this game because it's truly that much better than its competitors. Also, its PS5 controller feedback is wild good and I smiled for like an hour straight each time I pulled the bow back when I started playing. This was a highly anticipated game for me after loving Zero Dawn. I put 80 odd hours into Forbidden West and honestly, the longer it went the less I enjoyed it. For a game that had such amazing lore and story elements to draw from, I was stunned at the boring and unnecessarily convoluted direction Guerilla took with the story Forbidden West. Actually, that's just the thing with this game...it's boring. There is none of the mystery of Zero Dawn, the map is littered with icons and Aloy talks you through every step of the game leaving nothing to the imagination. The characters have little to no emotion and drone on with ramblings of tribal conflicts and issues that are difficult to care about. The game is extremely dialogue heavy and much of it is painfully mundane which caused me to skip whole sections of it despite never feeling the need to do so in any other game. Exploration is borderline pointless due to the aforementioned icon mess telling you where everything is. This is a Ubisoft "Map Game" in that regard, make no mistake.

Forbidden West pretty but it isn't the generational leap in visuals that the original reveal trailers suggested. In fact the game has a grainy, noisy look which detracts from the visuals and is quite distracting after the clean image of Zero Dawn. The underwater sections were heavily advertised adoring the marketing by are simply poor. Not only are they visually underwhelming compared to the trailers but the movement is clunky and there's no way to attack underwater. I avoided swimming sections where possible.

Glitches and bugs abound here which is disappointing after the quality experience of Zero Dawn. Aloy is routinely stuck between rocks, melee execution animations don't even connect with enemies half the time, Aloy fell through the map a number of times, enemies die in mid-air, NPC glitches prevent being able to finish certain quests, aome icons don't clear from the map after completion etc etc...

The newly introduced grapple hook is half-baked and can only be used in pre-determined locations. The same can be said for climbing. Why can Aloy climb one wall but not this identical wall a few meters beside it? The glider isn't fun. It loses elevation too quickly and seems as though it has been deliberately nerfed to prevent freely exploring areas Guerilla doesn't want you to be. The list goes on. Many of the problems Forbidden West has are poor design choices but some are clearly as a result of hardware limitations. The game is indeed a technical achievement on last-gen PS4 hardware but no doubt the game was compromised as a result of being bound to said ancient tech as a baseline. Sadly, God of War: Ragnarok may suffer the same fate. Let's hope not. If you got this far, thank you. Just one more thing. I'm not at all a fan of From Softwares games but Elden Ring is the total opposite of Forbidden West and being so, avoids all of Guerillas mistakes. The "Ubisoft Map Game" style is dated and stale whilst Elden Ring was fresh. That's Elden Ring completely buried Horizon II: Forbidden West.

I had so much fun with the second installment of Aloy’s adventure. The graphics are gorgeous, the sound gives you goose bumps sometimes and there’s a ton of stuff to do. I platinumed the game after 60 hours of gameplay. Comparing it with Elden Ring I preferred this game quite a lot.

I even had everything turned off and was almost at the end of the game and it was still telling me where to go, where to look, how to press buttons etc. I found the game way too easy even on the hardest difficulty. I found the abundance of crates to loot ridiculous, why make resources rare only to hand them to the player on a silver platter? The story was it’s saving grace. The game mechanics were a little busted, like I’d press a button for an action and it just wouldn’t do it. Even mashing the same button sometimes did nothing. I encounter a few minor glitches and graphics issues but it wasn’t as bad as some other recent games (I’m looking at you dying light 2) It was an okay game but nothing I’d rave about. I made the mistake of playing Elden Ring first, and I probably would have enjoyed this more if I played it first. It's kinda fun, kinda looks good, but it just isn't near the fun of Elden imo. All the hand holding is quite annoying. So heed my warning, play this before Elden ring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers are at the end of this review; I will mark before starting into them.

This game builds successfully on the gameplay of the original, adding new machines, weapons, and play styles. It successfully deepens the combat, making melee combat somewhat more viable, and human enemies a bit more challenging than the previous game (where they were quite dumb). Taking down machines remains one of the most satisfying combat experiences in any game. Finishing it took me about 50 hours: that includes doing all of the side quests that I found, but ignoring the vast majority of errands and collection quests. I appreciated how the optional content was truly optional: I don't feel that I missed anything crucial by avoiding types of quests I didn't feel like completing.

It was also completely gorgeous on the PS5. If you have one, I can't overstate: play this game. I have complaints, sure, but it's very good, and I wouldn't be giving it a 9.0 if it wasn't. It takes the original game, and improves on it in almost every conceivable way. If you liked the original, I don't see how you could not like this.

It's not all perfect though: sadly the story is a letdown vs the previous game. It's not bad: the scenario is just far more generic than the previous game—which had one of the greatest stories in a video game, ever—and isn't super engaging. Its beats and betrayals were obvious, and it didn't really satisfy. However, it's pretty well told, and so while it's maybe not the reason to keep playing as in Zero Dawn, it's not like it's going to make you stop playing. I did like the various relationships you built throughout the game however, and the characters are likable. I would've liked to see more side quests with them by your side.

The weapons: there were just too many of them. That was fine, and it didn't ruin my enjoyment in any way, I just ignored a lot of them. Also upgrades were difficult to perform on most "very rare" and above weapons without actively seeking out the materials, and in the end I just left most of them fairly un-upgraded. It would've been nice to be able to find other ways to do so; by the end of the game I had stacks of cash, nothing to spend it on, and a bunch of un-upgraded weapons. Kind of a bummer.

I also would've loved to see expanded stealth options. Also just like the last game the pain of thinking you're hitting "stealth attack" only to have it change at the last second, causing you to jump out of cover with a feeble attack is very real, and happens too often.

    Spoilers about story below:

This game has middle-of-a-trilogy syndrome in its story; the "resolution" at the end was a total letdown because you discover "oh no, a huge threat is coming (please wait until the next game)" without feeling like you've really "won" in the scheme of things. That's… fine, honestly. But paired with the overall predictable story it left me feeling pretty empty by the end. I don't think I'm giving it a fair shake in the scope of "video game stories" which are almost universally bad, and this one was fairly alright. But after how good Zero Dawn was, it is a disappointment. Especially for a game that overall builds and improves on every aspect of the previous game, except for this. Also a few scenes are just very badly written (I'm thinking specifically of the audience with the Chorus at Plainsong).

The original writer had nothing to do with this, as far as I can tell, and it shows. I hope they shape it up for the (obviously planned) sequel.

Still: it's a really good game! I'll be excited to see some DLC for it, and the sequel.

Forbidden West is a step up in a lot of regards to Zero Dawn. Graphically, it's much more beautiful, the animations are often smoother, the enemy variety is better, and the story itself is much more interesting for side content and character development.

Where Forbidden West lets me down is with how absolutely mouth droolingly stupid the game thinks I am. It has ZERO respect for my intelligence. There are no settings to turn it off. It just is what it is.

Oh... I wonder how I do this puzzle I begin to say in my head as Aloy spells it out for my in crystal clarity before the thought even finishes. Oh, I wonder if this is the correct room to be in... immediately cut off by Aloy telling me I'm in the wrong room and need to turn around. Oh let's quickly scan this enemy and see his weakne.... nope, Aloy blurts out mid thought I SHOULD USE ACID! Apparently I'm a baby that needs my hand held. I'm 60 hours into the game and Aloy STILL tells me... oh, I wonder if I use my glider to get down there. No duh... wow. The baby needed help again.

This is the single biggest mess up they made. It plays like the marketing team found a bunch of 60 year olds at a local mall to play the game as their first ever video game and took their feedback as gospel. It's infuriating.

The next biggest problem, I've never grinded. Not once. Never. I avoid all enemies I don't need to kill. I've only killed enemies I'm forced to due to circumstance or quest lines. I'm not halfway through the map and my character is already max level. Quests give skill points... great idea. Quests giving massive experience... not so much. The entire EXP system needed a massive overhaul before shipping. Very poorly made. Or they want you to be max level before you're halfway done the game?

Another issue I've experienced is the games punishing you for exploring. The nearest ? mark to the starting location pretty much requires an item to attain. Said item is 30ish hours into the game. The first quest you do? A side path that requires an item that's like 40 hours into the game. And that side path is off the main map. I'm just supposed to remember that a random quest cave I visited 40 hours ago had a side path that required an item to open... constant dead ends like this.

This isn't a metroidvania. It's easy to run back to a random location in 2d games. Climbing up a massive mountain for 5-10 minutes with enemies along the way and no campfire there to fast travel back to AND THEN finding out I'm missing said item to open said path is a middle finger to the player. Game traversal isn't remotely easy enough for this type of implementation. VERY VERY VERY poorly thought out and implemented. Gating areas and progression through item checks, good... doing that constantly from the starting moments of the game and putting all said item checks 30-50 hours of traversal later? Not good. This system required better or more experienced people implementing it.

My final main issue with the game is just TOO MANY WEAPONS. Oh... should I use my warrior bow with ice or the one with fire or the one with electricity or or or and that's just one weapon type. You often need more than 1. And so many different bows... It's frustrating to need to open the menu to unequip weapons or even armor because they're just so incredibly situational. Like... why would you ever... EVER main armor that boosts heavy weapons? Ever? Why would you? But oh.... I picked one up and this is a pretty hard fight so I guess I need to pause the game and take myself out of the battle and change my entire outfit mid fight now.... Who thought that was cool? It's like the weapon system from the old game and then someone tried to shoehorn in Borderlands absurd item system on top of it. It's such a terrible juxtaposition of anything the game should have been attempting to do.

Oh... and fire the person or people that made and implemented the potion "system" (if you can even call it a system). That person or people have zero reason to have punished us like this. Just rip the entirety of it out of the game and their end credit lines with it. Terrible in every facet and every meaning of the word. Nonsensical and unnecessary.

Finally I suppose I should mention the combat. Other than my above complaints about the garbage item system, it's mostly better than Zero Dawn. The rock paper scissors aspect of it gets a little old but it's still better.

Overall... it's such a highly polished and clearly passion driven game. You feel the love. Really. But so many design failures and feature implementations gone horridly wrong that it's difficulty to give it better than a 7. Sorry guys. It hurts me. It does. But this is the score the game deserves.

Nice, but maybe too classic? This game often shines when it comes to highlighting its universe, its history and its stakes. By contrast, the open world is still too big for nothing, with lots of uninteresting areas that don't reward exploration. I didn’t enjoy all the corridors and puzzles and climbing, but maybe others might. The story does get good at the end, but it is absolutely not worth it if you did pay 70$.

Combat was made more annoying. Enemies have more health for no reason. You can’t headshot enemies with the bow anymore. Now it takes 5-6 hits to kill them with the bow. Aloy gets knocked down a lot and takes a long time to get up. Upgrading skills/traits was also made more tedious.
It’s like they copied the giant spiderweb trait trees from FF15. I’ll be honest, I did not want to grind gear, weapons and coils so I played most of the game on easy and story mode.

Environment- it’s beautiful, but the color palette was all the same as Zero Dawn. You don’t feel like the world is anything new. (except for the beaches). When I finished the story, I had no desire to go back into the world and finish 6000 more side quests.

In summary I think Guerrilla games tried to do too much with Forbidden West's gear and upgrading systems. It was already at a fine point in the original game. I would have MUCH rather seen Guerrilla put more effort into the middle game story and fleshing out the Tenakh characters to be more likeable.

Very good game, well made. But the show was a bit boring. Looking forward to the sequel!

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
