I played this game on hardest difficulty on a 4k (The older HDMI standard not the newer 2.1 version) TV w/Ps5, so that's my visual context. I switched between the Resolution & Frame rate during gameplay. Solid.

If I were basing my review on Horizon Forbidden West lush beauty, WELL it would be getting a 10! What an amazing game, it was so atmospheric! I really got into the world.(With some caveats)

But after playing it & beating it on the PS5, on the hardest difficulty (157 hours)(no trophy for that?!)-I have a different take.

So, the game is a solid romp. It's a fun engaging experience. ALL the side quest are just as engaging as the main story. (I honestly got sick of it to be frank & longed for a simple fetch quest mixed in w/o having to find some boss at the end of it)...the characters are lively & chatty.

The combat for me, was appropriate to the difficulty I chose.. IT WAS VERY CHALLENGING. I honestly felt like some of the "boss fights", were frankly cheating at times, with the *Warping underground to my immediate location*... the warpy *jump attacks* where even with appropriate jumps on my part at least visually, as far as timing goes, I was still taking damage! I did not like that.

As a matter of fact, I felt like, the game was MORE NUMBER'S than skill, & more often than not, I found the "aim assist" hindering as much as it was helping. Like literally had arrows VEER off, course when it was very clear where the reticle was aimed. You could turn this feature off, but it was still hit & miss. Didn't like it.

The melee combat was annoying. Too much going on, I know the team was trying to make it "Fluid" & whatever other adjective you can throw out, but to me, it was just f**king annoying. I felt like I was trying to wrangle a herd of cats, getting aloy to do what I wanted in a fight.

Some of the tutorials in the melee pits made no sense.

A ton of weapons are story locked, which as an explorer, that's just annoying as all get out. The different armors were cool. Story locked as well.

They should have just made it simpler & you had 1 armor set with multiple slots you can customize with trinkets that boosted things for the player, & then you'd get to customize that, tweak it.

Same with weapons. Have 1 solid base, & then upgrade from there, instead of ALL these overly colorful weapons.. It was too much effort for me as a gamer & I'm sure for the dev? & it was a bad experience to be honest!

It was going from one time consuming bow/(insert weapon) to another.. it go OLD real quick. I'd find one I liked, & then have to move on.. (more powerful creatures, you need a more powerful bow?)

Speaking of weapons unlocked, you get a javelin that explodes in this game. That was pretty cool.

One thing though I noticed about ALL the weapons, & maybe it was just the difficulty I was playing at, but they didn't, even with upgrades, seem as "effective" or damaging, as the first Horizon Zero dawn?

Changing it up, I thought the "Special" abilities, especially one you unlock that makes you camouflaged, was really awesome, but poorly implemented. They just didn't last long enough, & you had to engage in battle FIRST to charge them up, which .. was annoying to be frank. Their was no way to upgrade these or make them work faster, etc.. It was a cool feature, but the way it was done, left it coming up short.

Grappling mechanic in the game, flat out sucked & was VERY limiting. I never expected myself to say this, but Halo Infinite that team pulled off the grappling mechanic perfectly. But I think if you are going to put a grapple in your game, you should at least aim for that level of effectiveness.

You unlock a certain transportation mechanic, in the game, WAAAY into the story. I'd say at about the 80% mark of the game? & since I did basically every side quest I could before tackling the main story... um, it end up biting me in the butt as a player. I'm sure it was meant to help make traversing the world more fun?

What I will say about this decision on the devs part, is again, its stupid.. it should have been done in a way where the player could have unlocked it ASAP, b/c it was the most awesome, epic amazing fun thing!.. the only way it could have been cooler, is if you'd got to ride on one of the large t-rex'esqe robots..

TL:DR Game is really amazing, its just got some small things that drag it down, instead of elevate it to a solid 10. For me, that's why I'm giving it the score I did. I feel like after giving the game 157hrs of my time, that I've got a pretty clear understanding of what I liked & didn't like as a gamer, & what was effective.

That being said, I have no regrets about my purchase.

I very much enjoy the theme of Aloy learning to rely on others personally, and I understand why people keep claiming Aloy is a Mary Sue. Personally I only see this as an issue if this makes the protagonist not relatable, which I most definitely didn't experience with Aloy: I actually find her a very relatable protagonist for myself, being a person who struggles to let people close.

All this while making the game look absolutely gorgeous? Take my money.

This game would be magnificent at 4K with higher than 30fps. Story is very well scripted and thought through and the characters most definitely are more human like than robotic like in Zero Dawn. I am also very pleased with the expanded leveling and skill point system in this installment as well. While Forbidden West is great game it is not without its faults. The combat hasn’t been drastically overhauled and the looting and crafting still feel somewhat sluggish and tedious. Zero dawn gave me a weird feeling of boredom even while I enjoyed that game. Surprisingly Forbidden west does the same. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the game it feel like I was forcing myself to finish it and if I’m honest I can’t understand why. Texture issues have mostly been patched. I’ve glitched the game a couple times either getting stuck perpetually falling or inside a sunken vessel and had to restart from last save. The game crashes twice early on. Overall this is trivial in 99 hours players. Redundancy: the rebel forts can get a little routine. I played almost entirely stealth with bows and traps so I personally didn’t mind as my challenge was to clear the objective undetected. I played these similarly in Ghost of Tsushima. Rebel forts are a minor part to the game. Combat: I did almost nothing in melee combat as I built Aloy around stealth and archery. Some of the combos seemed annoying to try and execute. Finale: The overall storyline is great, like binge watching a season of a series. The ending fight was a little underwhelming. Overall: I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the character development, the gameplay, new machines, and the puzzles of the cauldrons and relics. When Horizon: Zero Dawn was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017, I was immediately captivated by the fascinating, mysterious end-time world with the machine animals. AllWhen Horizon: Zero Dawn was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017, I was immediately captivated by the fascinating, mysterious end-time world with the machine animals. I wanted to know what it was all about and on the long journey to solve the riddle I probably opened my eyes just as wide as the reluctant heroine Aloy. Just climbing the first long neck was an experience in itself. All of this was new and exciting for both of us. In the sequel Horizon: Forbidden West, of course, this wow factor no longer applies. Well, at least not very often. It's basically more of the same, the gimmick of the mechanical beings doesn't pull as much as in the first part. Aloy and I already know what's going on. Accordingly, I made the mistake of not exploring as much at the beginning and more or less strictly followed the main story.

A mistake I quickly regretted when I just couldn't see the light when fighting the first boss machine. Frustration set in. So I loaded the last save before this quest and started playing the game the way it's meant to be: roaming around, fighting the machines, leveling up, getting better gear, and taking on side quests. The fun I had with the first part came back in no time. And that's despite the fact that I generally have an allergic reaction when I'm confronted with the Ubisoft formula - and nothing else is Horizon. Only in a more varied, better and more well thought-out way.

After the serious false start, which at times made me reluctant to continue playing, Forbidden West became a fascinating experience that doesn't quite live up to the first part, but I still didn't know better (sleep is important if you have to work the next day). let gamble through a few nights. I came to terms with the somewhat sprawling skill tree and the millions of weapon improvements and game mechanics, even if I was a bit overwhelmed at first. You don't really have to use everything the game allows you to do. As in real life, you have to recognize your own strengths and level and act accordingly. A truly fantastic game that really got the PS5 overheating for the first time since it was bought. But: Is it just me or has Aloy gotten a little arrogant since her supposed victory over Hades? I don't even remember her being as badass as she is in some of the cutscenes. But whatever? I still like Aloy.

What really bugs me, are the glitches and annoying gameplay quirks. Of course, the game received some patches by now but playing this game on day 1, it was simply frustrating. Already at the very first mission with Varl, I got stuck in a quest and had to re-load the game. this happened to me throughout the game a couple of times so far.
I fell through the map, got stock between Rocks. I was able to walk through walls in the base, which isnt gamebreaking but it shouldnt happen.
Riding a mount is super annoying. Often enough, you just get stuck between rocks and corners.
The glitches during sidequests are amazing - in a negative way. NPC's getting stuck so you cant talk to them at the destination.
While climbing works most of the time, sometimes the game just freaks out. Aloy does weird jumps she's not supposed to do, leading in frustrating gameplay moments that are very stressful. Climbing up a long neck shouldnt be stressful. But when she's clearly jumping for the grip and simply falls off, its just annoying as hell. Especially when you have to wait for the long neck to return to the position and this **** repeats a couple of time until it works. Wasting 20min if your time just isnt fun.
While this could be a lack from my players skill, its just annoying when you're getting ganged up and combo'd. I get it, you are supposed to dodge and sneak. But heck, getting combo'd into oblivion never was fun.

Im not sure how far I am through the game right now, but I encountered so many bugs and frustrating moments, that this highly anticipated game is more of a stress factor to me then fun. I really dont know how they **** it up so hard. A few bugs arent really a problem. Most games have them. But HFB really doesnt let you play for 1 hour without some bull**** happening.
I really want to like the game and I will complete it. But so far, i feel really stressed out by the game. Definitely not worth the 70 bucks for me. Should have waited.

Made an account for the first time just to rate this game. Is it an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE! I cannot heap enough praise on it. Gorgeous visuals, sharp combat & controls and such a wonderful story. More than lives up to the first one which in itself is a masterpiece. They really went above and beyond with this one. Hoping and praying for a third game!!

Forbidden West is a natural progression to the story that’s begun in Zero Dawn. New twists and turns have been added to confuse and excite the minds of players willing to explore the west. There is a bigger much more menacing threat this time around, which makes way for great character development for Aloy, but also gives us space for new Alliances to be made. New twists and turns have been added to confuse and excite the minds of players willing to explore the west. There is a bigger much more menacing threat this time around, which makes way for great character development for Aloy, but also gives us space for new Alliances to be made. Sharpen your spear and craft those elemental arrows, you’re gonna needs everything you have if you wish to venture the Forbidden West.
If the main plot is not what you came for, don’t worry! Every side quest is as fun and satisfying as the main story. It doesn’t matter if you’re helping an NPC recover their lost gear, liberating a rebel’s camp, or hunting machines. Every character, big or small, feel like part of a breathing living environment created with care and polish.
Graphics are exactly what’s expected of such a big budget game like this. No expenses have been made in creating this world, this is truly a next gem game. But of course, with beautiful graphics come little annoyances that are to be expected from a game pushing every byte of power from the last generation and the next. The world is intricate but not perfect, which nobody ever claimed to be. There is popping in some areas, clipping in a few pieces of clothes, and also animation glitches, but all of those are rare and only noticeable if you’re really looking for them. A fair price to pay for the freedom this game gives you.
There’s no room for boredom in this world, if you’re not willing to do the next story related mission or help that poor sailor get back to their beloved partner in one of many fantastic side quests, you are free to hunt for parts in order to improve your weapons, gather ingredients to cook boosting meals, kill machines for sport, or even compete for best time in an on-line hunting challenge. Don’t worry, none of these experiences will feel half baked like in some other big games…
This is one of those rare games that manages to give everything we want, an emotional story, a big intricate world to explore, and lots more for those who have the time. And if you’re here just for the main story, have a sit and enjoy the view, because Guerrila Games has got you covered.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's my first review ever and I am not a professional reviewer whatsoever but, considering that I love this franchise so much, I need to give my thoughts on the entire experience in hope that Guerilla might read this. I know just how much they care about the fans so I really want to give my pov on this sequel.

Overall the game is an amazing experience, the interaction with the world is better than the previous game, even if it's still not as good as games like Zelda BOTW, but is still a nice improvement when compared to the first game.

Machine fights are so much harder than the previous game, it took some time to figure out how to deal with them, but as you progress through the game and acquire more skills they become so much fun. One small complaint I have is that sometimes the areas are just too small to deal with bigger machines, graple points help but it's still hard to fight them sometimes. I must say that I love the new spear, it's not as good as the other weapons but it is so much better than the original and it helps a lot when you need to knock down small machines.
One negative thing I would like to point out are pit challenges, the instructions of the challenges are not that clear and it took me a lot to understand what I needed to do, especially in the Bulwark.

When it comes to graphics, i can't say much about the PS5 version since I played the game on the PS4. I don't care that much about graphics so whether it's good or astonishing is not that important to me, but I just wanted to point out that HZD had more consistent graphics when compared to this sequel, which has amazing graphics but sometimes the resolution (especially while flying) is not that outstanding; I bet that on the PS5 is much better and I know that the guys at Guerilla are doing their best to fix this.

One thing that I absolutely love are the new dialogues, the characters feel so alive and it such a huge improvement when compared to the first game, also there are so many more cutscenes and the voice acting is amazing.
The plot is great and I absolutely adored the interaction between Aloy and the other characters, even in side missions. They connect very well to the main quest, so much more than the previous game, I can see that Guerilla really took their time with them and it made the game so much more enjoyable; there may be less main quests but most side missions are basically mandatory if you want to understand the story better and conect with the characters. I loved Aloy's character development, from a loner who wants to carry the burden to heal the world all by herself and pushing everybody away to someone who trusts that others can understand what must be done to save the world and that her friends will always have her back.

I really enjoyed the story, maybe even more than the previous game seeing Aloy's development; however I feel like the ending was too rushed, especially when Tilda told Beta that she was an inferior copy. Considering that Aloy was starting to see Beta as a sister, how could she not say anything to Tilda? And after the final battle they don't address anything about this nor Nemesis with the other characters. HZD last boss had a less emotional impact on me because secondary characters were not as important as the sequel, but the "happy ending" worked in the preivous game because Aloy thought that her mission was accomplished. Here the "happy ending" doesn't work as good as the first game, so even if I adored everything about the main missions and side quests I feel like the ending was underwhelming compared to the first game.

One last thing I would like to point out is that I met some bugs while playing, like freefalling from the ground and some mission bugs, which sometimes were frustriting to deal with but the game just came out so I bet that in the next months everything will be fixed. This game is much more complex than the first chapter so it must have been hard for them to combine missions, relic ruins, flying override ecc,...

To sum things up I really loved this game, it made me feel many emotions and I even cried once or twice, which is all I ask for in a game. However, even if this franchise is one of my favourites, there are still things that need to be improved and I know that Guerilla will work hard to make the next game the best as they can, as they did with this one which is better than the previous game in most aspects.
(I gave the game a 9 but is more around 8.6/8.7)

I have had a dreading disappear after I shot them halfway through a battle. Another one glitches into a cliff wall. And I hate the arena. Especially the final battle in each tier.

I love everything about this game but theres something that I use every 10 minutes of game time, Photo mode. Photo mode is so simple but this world makes everything just look so vivid and beautiful. If I had to complain about anything in the game, it would be the climbing. Is not the worse but it can get annoying sometimes. Other than that, the game is a masterpiece in my eyes. O wait!
I forgot about the most important aspect of the game. The side quest are the best side quest i have seen in any game. Aloy's incessant talking about every little thing is infuriating, I don't need to be told 1000x to use my focus or to push a crate or to loot a corpse. They need to make hints optional. I did clock in about 70hrs gameplay, so I've not just picked it up and moaned, but I did end up ignoring the side missions by the large by the 60th hour or so because it frankly got boring. Its not a horrific game by any means, but the novelty the first game set up, quickly disapated playing this one.

    The Pros:

Beautiful, this looks like what I want a next gen game to look like, and there are more than a few occassions I've stopped and marvelled.

The load times on PS5 are non-existant, more than once I've waited for it to load to realise it's waiting for me to press X.

    The Cons:

This has fallen into the trap of fetch this all the way from the end of the map and come back again... good boy/girl. To the point that 3/4 of the way through the game I couldn't be bothered as I was sufficiently levelled up to get through to the end. The stories and hearts behind them felt robotic.

The Story... this may have suffered from *panic stations we need more scripts*. Someone then wrote out a 6000 page treaty for the entire saga, which got shot to s**t by the higher ups, and they cut it down to just keep all the Michael Bay bits, or for a better anaology The Matrix, and then the sequels.

Climbing pretty much anything. Kudos to the yellow X's and Lines, but dear lord I lost my rag more than once trying to climb a tower or quest sensitive section.

It also suffers from Far Cry-itis... by the second game, collectable issues, if you want legendary anything grinds, combat balance and the attitude or lack there of the other tribes, but I'll end up spoiling it.

Is this worth £70. Nope. I probably would have been just as grumpy at £35. Wait till its on sale. Sadly, this is The Matrix Reloaded.

Extremely clunky controls, the combat is pretty darn bad(sliding is an important combat mechanic with time slowing and getting you distance from the enemy) easily 50% of the time you attempt to slide Aloy will do the exact opposite and go into the slow sneak walk.
    .
There are instances where you manage to dodge a melee attack from a giant enemy happy that you dodged it and that very moment your character gets thrown back or hit as if some deadly wind was surrounding the enemies limb or tail. The fact that there are no combat upgrades to increase the length of your dodge (especially with the size of some enemies) just makes me shake my head. It's an achievement to manage to dodge but to repeatedly still get hit when you DID get out of the way makes some enemies attacks nearly impossible to avoid

Many of the characters are bland and forgettable and conversation with them is like neverending "blah blah blah" and I DO mean neverending

The climbing is slow and dreadful, it is NOT improved from the first game as much as they say. The melee combat is pretty darn bad I don't find the melee combat fun at all, you can attack small creatures and swing your spear right over them missing half the time. The swings are slow and you cannot cancel attacks. In concentration mode which slows time it also slows how fast your thrown spear or arrow moves and makes it move slower than the enemy which makes no sense.
Yes the game is beautiful, and it does have some fun aspects, and I like the difficulty level, but I'm sick and tired of this game getting called a masterpiece.
I have about 45 hours in I hate to just skip so many side missions I had planned to do but there seems to be more moments of frustration than fun at times so I think I'm just gonna finish the story and trade it in. This game COULD have been a masterpiece and might possibly end up a 9/10 game but there's ALOT that needs fixing and the game developers don't seem focused on fixing the important issues such as combat.
If you loved the first game as much as I did then do yourself a favor and wait until a year after release before you play this, and cross your fingers that these issues are fixed by then. Any reviewer who gives this game anything higher than a 7 in it's current state is either just a fanboy or a total sellout kissing the a$$ of the developers.

It's important to find all the devil in the details of all the ups and the downs. If a reviewer or user adds up all pros to see what works and are good, and then you subtract all the cons from those pros, you'll see that Horizon Forbidden West is not in the 8 category.

The problem with many critics is that most don't dive super deep into every aspect of this game. The presence of filmmaking, photography, architecture, 3d modeling, concept art, storyboarding, makeup and set design, acting, stunt workers and how it translate in game, editing, post production, animation, coding, fun factor, story, lore and historical context, music, sound effects, and genre representation accuracy are all part of a game that needs to be evaluated in extreme detail. You must also consider the labor that went into making all these things happen, which is obvious in this game, and the budget needed to make it happen, and the time it took to make the game, and how things are place and organize in category menu screens and sub screens.

I have evaluated this game in great detail and found for each of the above mention fields of knowledge, this game at minimum is an 8.9 and maximum of 9.6

And yes I factored in the poor story and bugs and lacking of interesting mission as well. No matter what the extreme lows were, the highs still overpowered its lows in decimal point counts

This is a 9.3 game. Anyone that says otherwise are open say so, just know that if a review is based on fun factor and story all as its make or break, then those reviewers aren't really reviewers. A review must be done without prejudice or personal feelings, and only after the counts are tallied, a reviewer must put him or herself in the equation. If you whine that you're not feeling the game and what to play something else, then you are factoring yourself in the equation far too early, and before you reach the half way point in the gam, or even before you finished the game to make conclusive opinions. Unlike other games it's one you'll want to come back to over and over again , with a very hard difficult setting, if you are looking for a challenging experience.

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
