This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought the story was dumb as hell. People flying around and **** Spending most of your time dicking around saving people in tribes. Going on fetch quests to recover the subordinate functions. The whole idea of “nemesis” and immortality. The first game was believable and legit scared me but I was laughing my ass off at this one.

This game just frustrated me to no end with the glitches (seriously the glitchiest game I’ve played since cyberpunk), pointless jumping and climbing puzzles, frustrating machine AI and spongey enemies, the repetitiveness of the world, endless side activities locked beyond endgame quest items, every settlement looking the same and having the same general “go save this person” side quest.

Not to say I didn’t enjoy the game, but the first game is a 10/10 for me. It was my first platinum. As close to a perfect game as I’ve ever played. I wanted more and more, and even enjoyed the DLC. This one more like a 6 or 7. I was just rushing to get through the story so it would end. I had no interest in exploring anymore once I saw how stupid the endgame was. Eventually I may come back and get the platinum, but not anytime soon.

There were some interesting gameplay enhancements that worked, and many that didn’t. I enjoy challenging games, but the game felt unfair at many points. This coming from someone who beat the first on Ultra Hard NG+ recently. There are generally times where there seems to be no way to avoid enemy attacks. The world is copy and paste and the quests uninspiring. Save this person, fetch this, clear out this camp, do this aggravating cauldron that thinks it’s a Legend of Zelda puzzle. Overrides are temporary and seem pointless, so the cauldrons seem pointless. You also have to find materials to unlock corrupted overrides which add an annoyance to the game.

The new characters are all unlikable and horrible actors with cringe dialogue. I found myself not giving a **** about any of them. Potential to build on Erend and Sylens stories are wasted. The after credits tease with Sylens in the first game is wasted.

The game is a glitchy mess. Multiple times I had to restart quests because of game breaking glitches. Multiple times I had to restart the game on my PS5 because of frame drops and black screens. Is it worth a play? Absolutely? Should you pay $70 for it? Absolutely not. Pick it up on sale and go play Elden Ring tomorrow.

Not a bad game. Not a great game either. The graphics are good, but the engine seems to lack polish. The AA is mediocre at best. Otherwise, the game is pretty. The real letdown is the story. Horizon Forbidden West blew my mind for it's complex and detailed open world! It improves massive from it's previous game from graphics, water effects, character fidelity, machine types, cutscenes, new mounts, new weapons and so on.

There’s nothing particularly wrong here. But it’s all incredibly boring.
Gameplay wise, there’re no significant changes from the first game. Admittedly there’re a few neat additions that make traversal and exploration easier. But overall, there’re no big risks taken. If you enjoyed the first game, and wanted 40 or so more hours of that, then this will be a good purchase for you.

Characterisation is very poor, everybody is flawlessly good, or unapologetically bad, and needs to be punished. There’re no attempts at comedy, or controversial opinions shared. It’s all very safe. This coupled with frequent, long cut scenes makes things drag on quite a bit. Basically, it’s quite bland. Now, I'm not saying everybody needs to be cracking jokes left, right and centre like we’re in some kind of Marvel movie. But the game takes itself way too seriously.

In the first game, there’s a massive sense of mystery right from the off set. In Forbidden West, while there’re questions to be answered, the big ones were tied up by the first game. This feels more like a big piece of dlc that a warranted continuation of Zero Dawn.

    TLDR: Big Ubisoft game.

It does feel like a great continuation of HZD, and I loved finding more lore about this universe (which is one of my favorites, in gaming). I don't personally mind that it feels very "same-old'y", when played after HZD, and I feel most of the systems was properly improved from the first game.
Outside of that, most of my positives for this title are the graphics, the animations and, most importantly, the characters.

But there are negatives. While I appreciate a singular, linear main storyline, it didn't feel great that there were no meaningful choices in an RPG title. Largely, your choices are irrelevant, and in, by far, most cases there was a positive end for quests. Everything always just turned out just fine, which invalidates the feeling of there being anything at stake. This is a very deep flaw in an RPG title.
It did have a lot to live up to, after HZD's success, and I appreciate that many feel this game improved that formula, but I can't ignore the bugs, the non-choices and the lack of performance for certain platforms.

The side quests don’t feel like chores, collectibles enrich the lore and aren’t just a grab and go, and there are fun puzzles that actually feel challenging. But this game is every bit as impressive as other triple A masterpieces that have come out over the last 10 years such as the Witcher 3, God of War, and RDR2, and The Last of Us

This game has not received the reception it deserves, largely, in my opinion, due to it being a console exclusive with a teen rating and young female protagonist that contrasts the strong, silent older male protagonists of other highly rated games such as those above. If you are interested in this game please try it and don’t believe the short sighted negative reviews of others who believe this game has nothing to offer, or worse accuse it of not being original or unique.

For open world games forbidden west gets so many things right and with only a few minor hiccups. The maps massive scale makes is easy to add all the right things to create an engaging world. Day night cycles that create paintings no matter where the light comes from, weather systems that vary depending on your biome, lakes filled with treasures hidden in its depths, and snow capped mountains holding literal gems and showcasing more visual gems. Although finding all the nooks to clamber around can be particularly tricky at times. Adding climbable surfaces into Horizon is a good step in the right direction, however inconsistencies can make mountains and sometimes simple hills difficult to traverse. Only specified surfaces can be scaled, and the only way of knowing is clicking away at the "focus" or turning on the bright yellow guidelines in the settings. Even in later areas of the game I found myself opting to avoid climbing and finding flat surfaces to jump around, which somehow is faster and an easier way to get around. Understandably the world isn't free climb due to the nature of the puzzles. Consisting almost exclusively of climbing walls, boxes, steel beam and ladders, and never once did I feel accomplished for solving a problem as Aloy would make sure to tell you how to finish it.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, fights usually were ranged sniping battles, only due to the melee combat being a little on the weaker side. However this time around Forbidden West gave Aloy a much larger arsenal. Multiple new skill trees unlock a plethora of new heavy hitting combos that can deal huge damage. Not only have they added combos for melee but plenty of new and unique weapons to suite any play style. The new warrior bow allows for up-close and personal action, enabling you to swap between building up resonator chargers and ripping off chunks of armor. Along side the new weapons comes a few new status effects the you can use to get the upper hand on your opponent, or perhaps they might use against you. To help get an understanding of all things new, Aloy can participate in multiple combat activities. Take on the Hunting grounds to get more familiar with each enemy type, Head to the Melee Pits to get and understanding of the best combos and put all those togethor to head into the arena to test your metal against packs of machines or some of the more fearsome dinosaurs.

As a sequel the game will of course succumb to the usual opinions of never being as good as the prequel. If Zero Dawn was a story focused on Aloy, Forbidden West is a story about your friends. I know, I know the power of friendship isn't a very exactly what most people would call a good storyline. But Gorilla Games has thoroughly impressed me with how engaging the supporting cast was. With some characters I was desperate to find out more about them. Being able to share a beer with Petra or Erend to listen to their stories really sold me on how living and breathing this world was. Sometimes during fights supporting characters might...support you. They might lob and fresh batch of arrows or sometimes a goody bag of health over your way. Sadly the fights would usually be so intense and full of rolling and being thrown around like a ragdoll that you would usually find those arrows after the fight. It's the though that counts. right?

Gripes aside delving into the west was an incredible experience and the cast did an incredible job bringing every character to life. The animation and motion capture have made every NPC look alive and everything from the deadliest Slaughterspine to the smallest squirrel creates a world the looks real. You can see the amount of love and talent that went into this game, the attention to details is evidence enough for that. Forbidden West raises the bench mark for all open world RPG and seeing the upcoming releases for 2022, I am extremely excited to see how much further we can go.

Graphics (Art Style & Quality) 10/10
    Story & Worldbuilding 7/10
    Gameplay (Combat & Puzzles) 7/10
    Overall 8.5/10

This is a beautiful continuation of the first game stunning graphic combined with amazing gameplay that feel as though every action plays off the next, your truly never out of options in a encounter. The story is jaw dropping and the camera change from the first horizon game makes story elements more engaging. This is a solid 10/10 in my book

The world design, it is top quality, there may be hiccups for you if you do play, but for me, in my experience I had none. The Quests are done extremely well, there wasn't a ton of fetch quests, and if there was a fetch quest if was for a goal, (either to help you or another character in finding something or someone who needed help.) I think very highly of this game, though you may not feel the same, I do believe this game to be the best game I've played so far, I recommend it to anyone who'd like to try it. I would also recommend trying out the first one, Horizon Zero Dawn, or if you've played it before, and enjoyed that one, or may not have enjoyed.

Horizon: Forbidden West (HFW) is a sequel to 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn - a game which I loved and platinumed. Because of this, I was incredibly excited to play HFW. Unfortunately, I would not enjoy it nearly as much as the original.

First off, the pros. I enjoyed the story, and the graphics, acting and facial animations are all great. The characters are also a highlight, with Aloy as the obvious standout. I really like when the main character has flaws, as it humanises them more - instead of the standard Mary Sue that a lot of fiction uses.

Sadly, this is where my compliments end. The game strikes me as one where bigger is not always better. I understand that others enjoy it significantly more than I do, and that I'm likely in the minority, but I'll try to explain why the game left me feeling frustrated instead of fulfilled.

While the map size is bigger that the original Zero Dawn, it apparently isn't significantly bigger. This surprised me, as it seems a lot larger when playing - and not in a good way. There is an overwhelming amount to do, and sadly it's not all engaging content. The biome diversity is nice, but it doesn't improve the mindless tasks that litter the map. I feel like the map size could have been cut in half, and it would have resulted in a much tighter experience.

Combat also received an overhaul, and it is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of HFW. Enemies are much more aggressive, and dodging was nerfed. Combine this with the longer animations when recovering, bad hitboxes, and sometimes Aloy refusing to jump 2 feet to hit an enemy, and I found myself avoiding combat whenever possible. This is exacerbated by the sheer number of weapons, outfits, etc. that are present. There are dozens of types of hunter bow, dozens of outfits, dozens of warrior bows, etc. Each one requires separate upgrading, and they all have stats - which make earlier weapons and outfits straight up useless in the later game. I ended up dropping the difficulty down to "Story" so that combat encounters would be over faster - not because I was dying, but because they were tedious.

Now, for the "feel" of the game. Things like traversal and exploration simply didn't feel good. Animations seemed to have a lot of pauses between them, making things like the hookshot feel slow to use. Even climbing felt slow - and while it may be more "realistic", I'm not playing a game set 1000 years in the future with robot dinosaurs for realism. Another common occurrence would be getting stuck on debris during fights or traversal. Tiny rocks will bring Aloy to a complete standstill, or block your path while you're evading an attack. This is constant, and makes the moment to moment gameplay feel awful.

We'll now move on to the technical quality of the game. I'm playing this over 4 months after release, and every play session is plagued by bugs. These can be categorised into serious bugs, and minor issues. On the serious front, I encountered a few cases where quests broke - particularly the melee pits. Fighting the pit master would get stuck, with the quest stating "talk to the pit master". Every time I would deplete his health, he'd get back up and his health would refill. This forced me to quit out of the game, load back in, and then go do other quests before coming back. Another serious bug I encountered was some of the audio cutting out entirely. Music and some sound effects would play, but others wouldn't. This also required me to turn off the game. Another bug that I encountered several times was getting stuck in a combat encounter where the enemy ran off in the opposite direction, and just kept running - resulting me in spending minutes chasing them down to kill them, because without doing that I couldn't save or fast travel.

The minor bugs weren't as bad, but were far more prevalent. This would range from people talking over each other, animals clipping through the ground or just straight up disappearing, Aloy's hair going crazy in cutscenes, the screen randomly fading to black like I had just saved, my mount stuttering and stopping every step, NPCs teleporting around, or items being below the ground and unlootable. I'd generally hit these bugs every few minutes - and it really broke the flow of the game. I can overlook some bugs, but this went far beyond an acceptable handful.

Overall, I can see what the developers were going for, and I can understand why others enjoy the game. For me, however, the game feels like an unfocused and bloated sequel. By the end of the game I was simply trying to speedrun the main mission so that I no longer had to play. I would much prefer a smaller, tighter, and much more refined game - like I got with Zero Dawn. I wanted to like Forbidden West, but I just couldn't.

The brought A LOT of new stuff, but a lot of stuff doesn't mean good stuff. Mostly copied from other games, like pushing blocks to reach second flor (the oldest mechanics in game), the paraglider from Zelda, the grappling hook (that never works as you want it to), they even put a game inside the game very much like Gwent in Witcher 3.
It gives you so much option that serves the same purpose: meals, potions, bravery boost.....and all feel cluttered and meaningless. The bravery boost shows a quick animation video but it doesn't stop the time during it, so if any enemy attacks you during it you gonna die right after the video is over.
Story-wise is the biggest letdown, it starts with a bad intro making it feel like the same game we played before, not showing new areas like the beach was used in the trailers so it would feel new for us....no. It keeps like the same game for most of the way. The story is confusing and just ok.
They stress so much the combos you can make, but in real combats you just keep to avoid the new big guy that throw rocks from wherever he is and always hit you no matter what.

It looks awesome but play worse than Zero Down

The game is beautiful! But the combat is sooo bad!! I am literally forcing myself to push through it! The machines can move across the field in a second, but Aloy has trouble hitting any target in front of her. They built a melee system, but the system has no targeting at all. Every time you go to aim, it's like the AI is programed to notice and forces the machine to move. This is such a frustrating game!!

I'm part of the lgbtq community, and even I was starting to feel weird about how there are very few honorable male characters, and how there are so many lesbian characters. So, many side quests had lesbian characters. It's not even representational of life.
Then the ending seriously threw me off, cause it just felt so out of place. There was no real story development for that love scene in the end. It seriously felt like they just threw it in to make 'woke' quota deadlines. if the 'woke' crap was just better written it would be so much more accepted, but at this point, it's really becoming a problem in ruining the art of storytelling. I can't wait for this ridiculous fad to end. Unfortunately, so many of the stories we hold so dear will be ruined by the time that happens.

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
