I know it already has a high rating, but honestly it deserves even higher. The scope of the story and world of Horizon is expanded MASSIVELY in this sequel and the mechanics that we love from Horizon Zero Dawn and only refined and not changed or replaced.

Quite often there are bugs, but one bug just turned the whole impression of the game After I passed the Gemini, I went to do more sidequests and only after some time I went to base to crafting override for the Sunwing, but I can't do it. Can't restart the Wings of the Ten mission. There are no saves left before that mission. 60 hours in the game and that's it now it's a brick. I'm very frustrated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are no doubt cutting edge and the world is crafted in meticulous detail but the gameplay is flat out boring. Endless droning dialogue, a convoluted and needlessly complex storyline, characters that don't make you care about them (including the bland and unlikely heroine Aloy), and tedious battle mechanics including a lot of useless weaponry and upgrades make this game a slogfest. I was super excited to see a realistic game made about the effects of global warming - and how can you go wrong with robot dinosaurs! - however this game is anything but realistic and the dinosaurs are as bland as the human characters . All the detail they put into crafting the outfits for the various tribes and nobody has a speck of dirt on them and they all look and talk like they just stepped out of some hipster uni safe space.

Also despite the supposed inclusive ideals of the developers after within the first few hours of play a character calls a priest an "old white ***" then spits on the ground. What?! If any other skin colour was referred to in that manner this game would be banned. And perhaps it should be.

Two stars for the near perfect graphics, zero for everything else.

I could detect no inspiration or artistry outside of a general "barbarian good!" ethos, and the silhouettes are largely the same bottom heavy, minimal waist, ugly hat theme from the first game. The gameplay is great, outside of the very floaty and unfortunately still amateurish melee system. This includes machine melee attacks with enormous hitboxes and no clear indication of the avoidance window/s. The weapons and upgrade system are noticeably more bloated and cumbersome as well. However, it's mainly the writing and acting, particularly for Aloy, that ruins this game for me. If you don't notice how bad it is I could see how you could really enjoy this game, but once I realized it there was no going back. Aloy mistakes volume for intensity, and since her character has no sense of humor she is almost always intense. Therefore no matter the circumstances, whether it be mourning a death, or scrambling down a hillside pursued by giant machines calling out instructions to some npc, she will speak just above a whisper to let you know she is very serious. I liked her a lot more in the first game, though she was by no means a great character then either. Aloy's responses and actions can be predicted to near certainly after you spend about 30 minutes with her. She will turn down help at every opportunity, since she's the only one on the planet capable of handling danger, and she will speak haughtily and condescendingly to those that ask for help or give advice. Putting aside Aloy's tragic lack of personality, her environmental dialogue, as well as that of any npcs that the game manages to foist on her despite her protests, becomes laughably banal very quick.

Example: Oh look a locked door, I better explain out loud how necessary it is going to be to find a key so that I can open that door. Oh look, a key, I better say out loud that wow, now I can open that door. Oh look, I opened that door, better mention how I should go through that door now to reach the next area... etc. ad infinitum. In fact, the bizarrely hand-holdy nature of all these bits of dialogue was the only thing that caused me to laugh out loud in the game.

The last thing I will mention is the pacing, and it's hard to think of a triple A example where it's done worse. There must have been 400 fetch quest writers for every person working on the main story. The tying of significant abilities to advancement of the rather short main plot while bombarding the player with side quests, many of which they can not complete until they unlock those abilities, feels extremely poorly timed and executed. I was shocked when near the end of the main quest line I unlocked an ability that vastly improved exploration, only for the game to end after basically the very next mission. I feel sorry for whoever put the work into that, since almost all my side quests were done and there was no reason at all to keep playing or exploring.

Too bad. A phrase which literally and figuratively sums up this game on multiple levels. Glad I borrowed instead of bought, and I think I'll just watch a summary of the next one on YouTube since I do like the overall story concept. I put 86 hours into this hoping it would redeem itself, but that was not the case.

On our journey together, I grew to detest her more than any other humanoid ever created. She's a drooling fool, a one-note face plant of a human being, spouting dialogue that you would love to be a monologue, only if it were given by another character. Can I shut her down? Turn her off? Replace her head with any NPC in the entire world? If you don't understand why she is awful, you need to look in the mirror. If you hate her as I do, join my tribe, man or woman, and together, let us build a world free of this inhuman storybot. I need to go lie down, but remember, she can be defeated. Expand

But to be honest I’m really surprised by what I’m experiencing in Forbidden West. I haven’t finished the game yet but I don’t think even I can fully appreciate the remarkable work of art this game is. The game world is beautiful and filled with details. It’s alive with loads of side quests that are properly presented and intertwine with what’s going on around you. With choices that affect the outcome. With remarkable acting that can now truly be appreciated as it is truly on par with animated movies or tv shows. With fun to explore locations. Hidden places. Thousands of fun activities. Interesting cultures and characters to meet. Stories that you want to follow. A game that from what I can tell is a lot about the journey of Aloy and how vulnerable she is and the importance of friendship. We know from the first game how well the fusion of sci-fi, prehistoric and tribal settings works on this series. But still. It allows for such great gameplay with each enemy almost functioning like a mini boss with each own advantages disadvantage you can exploit. When I first started the game my goal was to mostly do the main quest and not waste much time in side activities that are often repetitive. But everything is so hand crafted that from a hidden location to an enemy base you clear out, it fits and provides you more detail into the story. Or you find a gorgeous looking hidden place and Aloy reacts to it as a believable character. Or you end up doing an activity and meeting a new character that is interesting. Random encounters that end up with an interesting mission to do. And the music. So so good. The background audio that at times felt so real. They did a remarkable job as it sound pretty much like reality. Binaural or whatever it is they do I could literally pin point animals passing near by off screen¡. After experiencing part of this game I really can’t understand why some people would take the time to review bomb a game that from is at least on par with some of the best games ever created. I just edited this “review” after playing quite a bit more changing my score from 9 to 10. It really is amazing. The truly unique places you visit set it apart from many other games I’ve played where I had the feeling of “been there done that”. The creators really tried hard to make places feel original. But above all, this is an open world game that doesn’t feel like the typical open world game. There is no generic open terrain feel. Every single frame is like a painting you could use as wallpaper. There is always something interesting on the screen. And you are continuously distracted. I’ve played Elden Rings that is pretty good and a different type of game but just to give a small example as far as open world games go. Technically and immersion wise, Horizon Forbidden West is probably one of if not the best right now. I’ll give a small example. I could see the lights of a village kilometers away from me in Horizon. Basically as far as the eye can see. In Elden Ring the light from torches only showed up when I was a few hundred meters away from them. The lights spots basically spawned. This is immersion breaking. To put it simple, Horizon feels like an immersive cinematic experience when compare to other highly regarded open world games out there. Expand

For me, two things let down the game which also let down the first game. 1. The world feels very empty. Very lifeless. I easily got bored and lost interest in the world. It got to the point where the world just felt boring and towards the end I didn’t feel like exploring the world anymore. 2. The side quests just like the first game felt very tedious and time consuming. It got to the point where I couldn’t care less about the side quests, especially the side characters and their stories, who they are, what they do, how they got into that particular situation and their struggles. The side characters weren’t unique enough from the other side characters. I didn’t care what happened to them and weren’t interested in them at all. The main quest was very entertaining, the main characters I did care about. The combat, gameplay, and graphics are some of the best I have experienced in my time as video game player which is why it merits an 8/10. If the former is rectified in the third and final game then it will easily be a 9 or maybe even a 10.

It's another game that had me missing probably quite entertaining content because I was bored and just wanting to finish the main story.

The combat in this game felt like a huge downgrade, weapons like the cannister rope gun seemed entirely pointless because the creatures move so fast it's impossible to actually ignite the cannisters once they've been attached. Maybe this is a different story on PC.

As a huge fan of the original game i was disappointed with this outing. Forbidden west is an impressive looking sequel to the original game with some nicely upgraded visuals on ps5 and a long main story quest.

Unfortunately the storyline wasn't as engaging for me this time around with much of the subtlety of the worlds mystique and danger left to the wayside in favor of a needlessly woke cast of mostly attractive skinny female quest givers with cheerful outlooks in a world supposedly filled with starvation and lethal machines at every turn.

Sadly the core tight action adventure combat of the original hasn't evolved enough here and instead just feels like they slapped a bunch of new weapons and ammos together which now makes what worked in the original needlessly complex. The machines now go into extreme aggro mode when ther player is detected and they fly towards you almost instantly with little to telegraph their actions causing a stun block / dodge/slomo aim/loop. VERY FRUSTRATING. On top of this there are now multiples of very similar weapons in each class with some now quite odd choices of ammo hard locked into the weapons so i found it hard to truly zone into a loadout that ever felt right.

Of whats new theres nnow some bloated open world nonsense going on here that is really just filler and further detracts from what could've been a tighter overall experience. Thankfully most of what i didnt enjoy could be easily skipped or avoided with an excellent accessibility options menu where you can just stick dynamic hud on, dial down the combat difficulty to story and just mainline the story quests (if you want!). You can even adjust the looting so that you always automatically collect the rarer machine parts from each kill which saves alot of time. Sadly the platforming mechanics are still quite terrible with weird 'lock in' animations and it just feels weighty and cumbersome - certainly not next gen in any way with lots of moments of aloy clipping through the scenery taking away any tension or real feeling of having physical control over the character.

The game was originally marketed as a ps5 title before the shift towards cross gen releases by sony and i really felt that hurt this title. Im certain by going ps5 at the development stage, some of the animations, level and character design and perhaps even combat design could've been more advanced and more on a par with something like ratchet and clank and although at times it is still quite impressive to look at its still not quite on the level of next gen tech i could've hoped for after the wait.

Bit of a weird aside but i noticed in this title Aloy talks ALOT about absolutely everything happening at all times which is quite odd! Despite having blitzed the main quests skipping most if not all side activities and side quests my playtime was 35hrs! The game feels ovveripe with content. Still I had my fun and traded it in but I left feeling affirmed that guerilla really did just get lucky with the hit game HZD!

Excited to see where the DLC takes Aloy and her story next!

Some small issues that vna easily be fixed but nothing game breaking, pretty much an improvement over the first game in every aspect. The new area is beautiful and the sound team did an amazing job, the new machines are pretty awesome as well and I like some of the new types of weapons.

    - Side quests. Really well acted and not just generic fetch quests. Really add to the world building and grant decent XP boosts for your skill tree.
    - Skill tree. Loads of ways to specialise your build but not overly complicated.
    - Story telling is generally really well presented.
    - Stealth play is a lot more realistic than most games. Enemies will see you from realistic distances, you need to be much more careful.

    Cons
    - Combat is bit finicky. Button mappings are unorthodox in my opinion, find myself pressing the wrong buttons a lot. I suppose I could probably remap them, but I always use the default button scheme.
    - Some bugs. Texture popping certainly a thing. Have noticed the game running really slowly at one point had to quit. I expect them to be patched.
    - Pinging. I find I am constantly pinging for items of interest nearby. Its abit annoying, but I dont want to miss. anything.

So mainly combat feels like the main weak point to me. Bugs will be fixed and I am patient enough to wait. As mentioned the side quests are excellent to the point I forget whats going on in the main quest. I think more of the side quests should have been woven into the main story or something. Cause I probably had about 20 hours or so in the middle just doing side quests.

I have seen some people label Aloy a "Mary Sue"(Character perfect at everything). That is false, Aloy has to make questionable decisions at times and in some dialog she is abit of a dick quite frankly. I think they got her character just right in this, she is badass obviously and most NPC's basically worship her but still human.

The lead character has zero personality and comes across as very whiny. The climbing sucks. There is WAY too much dialogue in the game and the story is boring. The graphics are nice though and the combat is pretty good. There are much better games in this genre.

This game is fantastic. Main story is fantastic and even the sidequests are great in this game(usually im one to skip these). This game is simply the first but improved in every way. Melee combat is MUCH better(matters more vs human fights), the dinosaur AI seems to be improved and harder, graphics are incredibly even on performance mode. List goes on.

I saw a review mentioning that he would rather play AC:Valhalla... Message to you: Holy sh*t your taste in games must be weird. Odessey was great, but Valhalla was a massive yawnfest.

The game and the scale just feels very very bloated and this completely breaks the pacing with the story when you decide to take a bit of a break, this break can lead to hours of pointless stuff which disconnects you further from the main story.

Horizon Forbidden West is a really good sequel and improves on the first game in many ways. Not everything is better mind you but overall I think it's a net positive. I'll start with the Pros and then move on to the Cons:

+ traversal has been improved. I won't spoil anything
Horizon Forbidden West is a really good sequel and improves on the first game in many ways. Not everything is better mind you but overall I think it's a net positive. I'll start with the Pros and then move on to the Cons:
+ combat is more weighty and has been expanded greatly with new machines, gear, status effects, abilities, etc.
+ traversal has been improved. I won't spoil anything but there are more and really fun options to get around the game world. And if you want to fast travel that stuff loads super fast on PS5
+ the graphics look amazing. Not just the lush environments but also the massive upgrades to character rendering as well as character and facial animations. Dialog sequences no longer look awkward like they did during the first game.
+ The writing and performances are improved compared to the first game. I enjoyed the story and characters a lot in this game. It's of course tough to follow up the mysteries that were established and uncovered during the first game but I really liked what they did in the sequel and it was only elevated by the performances. Even side quest had great production value.
+ They did a lot to switch things up in the open world to prevent things like the Tallnecks or Cauldrons from becoming stale.

However not everything has been improved and in some cases it is clear they tried to improve things but unfortunately missed the mark. So here are the negatives:
    - Combat is more weighty but almost to the point of feelings sluggish. While traversal has been sped up, combat has been slowed down. Some of the windups and staggering animations on Aloy are overdone in my opinion. Particularly annoying to me was how long the focus requires to scan enemies and reveal their weaknesses. The game is harder as a result of these things.
    - The game leans more into being an RPG and can be kinda overwhelming and confusing with all the new stuff it throws at you. Unlike the first game I feel like you need a guide before starting the game to learn about all the new stuff and how to engage with it.
    - The open world is great but exploration is progression locked. Do not make the mistake I made: don't go exploring the game world before you have unlocked 4 important quest items from the main story. You will know what I'm talking about once you have started playing. Without these items you will constantly run into quests and places that you can't actually access because you are missing those items.
    - The game is slightly overwritten. There is a lot of dialoge and you can typically skip optional dialoge options because they don't add much other than dragging the conversation on even longer.
-the climbing has changed but still sucks. It's still super inconsistent what can and can't be climbed and the climing itself can feel awkward.

Overall a fantastic open world game with great combat, a well directed story and some minor nitpicks.

Boring story? You can say that about any story you can't become invested in. Terrible graphics? Who are you trying to fool, objectively the most beautiful game people have seen on a PS5. Broken performance? Really, I wish I could get one of the copies of this game that glitches as much as people have complained about.

I know this type of review bombing is just a way for trolls to let off steam. And yes, it is a form of trolling to take time out of your life to come and write at least 75 characters (too low if you ask me) Just to complain about something that you do not...I REPEAT...DO NOT need to even pay attention to. Even if you believe everything that you are saying and feel a conviction in your opinion there is no need to put pen to paper just to hear your own metaphorical voice.

For the graphic and the details the graphics are so good even when I'm playing on performance mod you don't feel a lot of difference from resolution mod so i would say go for performance to hit the 60 fps when it comes to details the dev's put a lot of work into towns NPCS they have a daily routine and some of them do different stuff in small settlements.
For the gameplay it's enjoyably and feels good minus a pop-up bugs or some small bugs like getting stuck on stairs.

Honestly I forgot how cringey the characters were in this game or maybe this sequel just made them worse I'm not sure. This one brings nothing new to the table and feels like a monotonous Ubisoft style grind game. The story is boring, the "action" is boring, basically the whole thing was boring. Seem like the only good Sony title left is Ghost of Tsushima. Better not screw that up since the sequel killed both TLOU and Horizon. Expand

Gorgeous overhall from HZD in terms of graphics. The scenery is absolutely amazing and I've found myself stopping and pausing just to look around in photo mode on several occasions. Everyone review bombing this can kick rocks, your life is pathetic if you feel the need to bomb a game with fallacies and without actually playing it.

Great and deep game. Just started it and doing every side quest which is also made good. Face animations are improved, graphics awesome. Got some pop ups at the begging but no bugs for now.

I think this game is close to being garbage. The graphics are stunning and combat is ok but dialogs and characters ,even Aloy herself, are so dull that I started skipping all of the dialogs. Horizon Forbidden West is a masterpiece I love the gameplay mechanics, soundtrack, the beautiful world, side quests, main story especially the tribal politics, it felt like I was playing a futuristic sci-fi Game of thrones

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
