In the first hour I was a little worried that this game was going to be a copy/paste job with a few new things thrown in. Once you get pass the very first section of the game all the changes become very clear. The game is beautiful like everyone mentions but its actually the tweaks, new customizations, skill trees and interactions with NPC's that do it for me - all of these have been massively improved from the first game.

Side quests dont feel like a chore at all and are very interesting/engaging, everyone that Aloy speaks to actually feels like shes speaking to them - no jerky head movements or eye pupils zigzagging everywhere, it looks natural now. Swimming feels fantastic and adds a lot more exploration, not to mention the scale of this game is massive btw, bigger than Zero Dawn.

How you approach the gameplay is also completely up to you - You wanna be a stealthy assassin? ✅

You wanna chug potions like a Witcher and withstand a beating from machines? ✅

You wanna focus melee combat and become a spinning beyblade? ✅

You wanna be a trapmaster and have a more strategic approach? ✅

You wanna sit back and watch your machines cause havoc? ✅

You wanna be a Legolas 2.0 and stack bodies with your bow? ✅

Or become a jack of all trades, master of none.

There will always be people that moan saying some assets are recycled from Zero Dawn - but what do you expect? Its a direct sequel! Of course some things will seem similar. If im being honest, it seems a lot harder these days to satisfy peoples needs in games - if its not Apex, COD or Fortnite they just arent interested and are quick to bash a game.

I will adjust this review the further I get into it but for anyone contemplating buying this game - do it! so far its incredible. I play this on a PS5 and it runs super smooth with almost instant load times. Dont listen to anyone that says the graphics dont look good, they must be running it on a base ps4 with a 720p monitor because its stunning

It is by no means perfect but any reviewI am a trophy hunter and this is my first time leaving a rating for a game on Metacritic. I am primarily doing this in response to the inappropriate review bombing by bad actors and those who fail to understand the purpose of review aggregate sites like this. Horizon Forbidden West is a superb game that has clearly suffered through the pandemic. It is by no means perfect but any review under a 6 is clearly just bad faith drivel. This is not going to be written like a proper review but rather, a series of impressions I've had after about 25 hours and completion of about 50% of the game. First: the positive.

Environments - Environments in this game have been expanded and improved over the first game in ways that will be immediately apparent. Vast open plains, barren deserts, white sandy coastlines that seem to stretch on forever, all decorated with far more reactive foliage than anything the first game could produce. The biomes in the first game all largely felt the same. That is simply not the case in Forbidden West. Machine Diversity - Zero Dawn offered up an impressive array of machines to hunt and was rightly lauded for its encounter diversity. That same bestiary has returned along with a variety of new machines that are equally well-designed and fun to fight. While there are some species of machine that quickly wear out their welcome, the vast majority of encounters are tense and satisfying. Taking a leaf out of Monster Hunter's book, Forbidden West boasts over 40 monster machines and nearly all of them can easily destroy a player who isn't careful and look damn good doing it. Side Quests and Collectibles - I got the platinum trophy for HZD. Doing so took about 3 days. In that time, I managed to complete the greater majority of side quests and found a good number of the collectibles. I, therefore, feel I have good standing to make the claim that the side content in HFW is much improved over its predecessor. The side quest holders manage to be more fleshed out while offering far more interesting tasks for the player to complete. The collectibles are mildly improved over the first game's offerings, especially the drone collectibles that I won't spoil here, but they are generally the same standard fair found in other open world titles. Still, the side quests more than make up for a lack of interesting things to mindlessly pick up. Character models - Improved in nearly every way. Facial animations, fluid movements, level of detail. All has been touched up and made to look truly next Gen. Characters in the first game, especially those who weren't relevant to the main questline, has an almost plastic appearance to them. Models in Forbidden West look near universally amazing, so much so that it makes one question why more effort wasn't applied in the first game to make models look as good. Now for some negatives:

Story - Do not listen to the trolls who say this is the absolute worst story they have ever experienced. That is unfair and obviously stated in bad faith. What is fair to say, though, is that this story is not as strong as that found in Zero Dawn. Aloy's journey from humble outcast to hero of the Nora is a reiteration of the same classic hero stories people have loved since the time of the ancient Greeks. Through her struggles, she learned the necessity of relying on others to accomplish great things and overcome insurmountable obstacles. That lesson was immediately forgotten in Forbidden West. It's actually quite the disconnect that Aloy begins the story trying to shoulder her burdens alone after going through the trouble of realizing how stupid that is in her first adventure. Beyond that though, the story focuses more on the Sci-fi elements of the game and less on the personal journeys of Aloy and her allies and is ultimately weaker and crazier for it (though this is partially fixed for those who engage in the side quests). Bugs - Technical polish (or the lack thereof) is likely the area that this game falls the flattest. In 60 hours of playing HZD, I do not recall any major rendering or game play bugs. In 25 hours of HFW, I have encountered numerous issues. While there haven't been any hard crashes, I've had to reload the game a number of times to redo quests after objectives bugged out (not a terrible issue due to the games generous autosave system) . This, combined with multiple black screen flickers has resulted in a noticeably affected experience. It's not a deal breaker and one could definitely point to the pandemic as the reason but it's definitely something any player is likely to be affected by. Bottom line - My subjective score for this game is an 8 but the OBJECTIVE score for HFW is no less than 6. People calling this game ugly, inferior to HZD, or a complete failure are clearly just acting in bad faith to bash the game. They say they aren't trolls. They definitely are trolls. Guerilla put out top notch work while rejecting crunch *applause*.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this game for all it offers over the original with improved gameplay and visuals and the overall traversal improvements e.g being able to override and ride more types of machines which was a great addition. The amount of story and content it offers is quite vast and large also the bland environment from the original game has changed to feature many beautiful locations and random events that can happen within the game, making gameplay even after completing the main story feel unique with more machines than the original.
The better targeting system for machine parts also fixes a lot of problems I had with getting certain parts off of machines in the original game. Another greatly improved thing is the pacing over the original although some people
Including myself have encountered bugs it isn’t a bad game, many people who are complaining about such things aren’t being specific at all
just saying that the game is bad. I have seen some serious complaints that should be fixed but it seems like none of them go into real detail or believe it to be completely game breaking ruining everything for them. I have encountered some bugs in my 24 hour playtime but most of them were minor, never breaking the game or causing me to fall through the map.
I played this on the resolution mode and it ran completely fine. Also I don’t really understand how the gameplay of the original is better than this considering it’s the same gameplay but only improved in areas that definitely needed it and as for the story while it isn’t the most original thing ever, it definitely has its emotional moments and really good character progression.

Played 45 hours so far and i love it. The motion cap and dialogues are such an improvement over zero dawn. I like the diversity of weapons included, it makes it easier to adapt your own playstyle and beat the machines in many different ways. Storywise i like the continuation from zero dawn and where it is going in forbidden west.

Just wanted to mention about the mini game, there is nothing fun with chasing figures on a board, it has confusing rules, your opponent can win only because he has more patiente and he is runing out all over the board. nothing like the good old gwent

Back in 2017, open world game design was already stale, but robot dinosaurs and the overall setting were intruiging enough for me to enjoy Zero Dawn to completion. For Forbidden West, that intrigue is completely gone. The graphical presentation is amazing, but the gameplay is stale and rote. Every system is technically improved, but nothing feels truly innovated on.

Finding a new mount is a pain. Discovering a new location, only to be locked out by yet another tool is frustrating. The open world is largely barren, apart from machine encounters that have lost their excitement. Aloy's personality is way more annoying than before, and her constant mumbling is intolerable. The micromanagement and poor controls during combat make it a slog. The game pushes me away at every turn. Hell, the glider is hardly even useful.

Guerilla Games took a lot of the feedback received from the first game and implemented improvements in this iteration. I have encountered some bugs which have been annoying but nothing that would prevent me from continuing. Among the bugs I have seen thus far in my 40+ hours:

    - On 3 occasions, the frame rate drops to a crawl and then leads to a game crash. 2 other times the frame rate eventually caught back up.
    - During mid-late game side missions there were some issues with the progression of side quests where npc's would not proceed to the next step to allow for progression. Fast traveling to a camp fire and returning to the area seemed to fix those issues.

Yet to be solved bugs are:
    - Completed map icons from a particular activity are not disappearing as they should.
    - Melee Pit Quests seem to be bugged currently. Especially for those who purchased the deluxe edition of the game.

Outside of those issues, I have been having a great time. The graphics are beautiful, the story is interesting and the side quests varied. They don't necessarily feel tacked on but feel as though they are meaningful mini story lines that further reinforce the main plots importance and overall immersion within the world.

Bottom line, if you enjoyed the first game, you will like this one. If you didn't like the first game, you probably won't like this one.

A massively open world game that often requires a lot of travel on foot/mount is normally fine, but far too often I will try to attempt a side mission without realizing I need some kind of ability/equipment from the main story. The game needs to do a better job of letting you know not to waste your time with these things just yet. The sheer amount of side events can be intimidating and (after a certain point) a bit useless.

Some strange bugs encountered already. Dead machines twitching around infinitely and dead humans still standing upright. NEEDS NG+ but I assume this will be added later just like in HZD.

It's a very similar game from its predecessor, so if you enjoyed that, you will probably like this. Altogether a very solid sequel, it just needs a bit more polish in some minor areas.

I spent lke 75h and did platinum trophy. So, the good thing is, this game completely negates all it's former criticism: The melee combat is now good enough and how it should have been at part one. Furthermore the cities, NPC and open world are brought to life. And of course you can swim and fly now which makes a overall nice package. Fighting the machines is done very very well. The bad thing is, the story is "just" continuing what was started in part 1 and there is almost no mysticismn or secrets anymore despite...*no spoiler*. This is mostly why it doesnt deserve a ten. I really dug the apocalyptic story part one when you unrevelled the truth....but now you already know 90% of it. Also in direct comparision to Elden Ring I have to say that Forbidden West caters to the masses and is highly subjected to the standard open world formular. So if you are tired of open world games you will get one one the best here but it might still get a bit stale here and there with the many generic stuff to do, later on. But it's acceptable if presented in such triple AAA style and it is often more addictive than not.

It's probably the second best PS5 game this year and I can highly recommend it.
But in the end it has to bow before Elden Ring, which is just simply a better game with a better open world desing (though not graphically). If you can afford it, just buy both and play HZD first :D.

Game play is more fun (improved combat), improved movement through the world, improved skill tree with different ways to play. But melee combat goes out of the window later in the game if you are playing higher difficulties.

Male white characters are almost all bad guys, black predominately good and females are all paragon except one important character.. It's hilarious. And where are Asians, could count them on fingers of one hand hahahah. And it seems that 50% of the cast is LGBT. Please guys, be more rational with this.. Absolutely beautiful game. And i want to make a point in a word "GAME". Many high rated projects lack gameplay these days and are good FILMS, with linear, boring gameplay.
There is a Great story and a stunning gameplay, with GREAT side quests, highly recommend.
This game is all about WANTING to explore every bit of the huge world you are in.

I was skeptical at first after hearing a lot of negative reviews resulting to starting the game with a very low expectation. from the get-go, its visual is ridiculously beautiful and were continuously amaze after many hours realizing how vast and stunningly immersive every each area you encounter. overall, it has positive combinations of the last of us 2 in terms of its phasing and immersion with the world, a bit of uncharted with its world interaction and breath of the wild with its open world freedom of exploration. I really don't like zero dawn it is so repetitive and boring while it is quite the contrary with forbidden west i absolutely love the game i was never bored, it is very addictive and beautiful from start to finish. Going in to the most important aspect, the game was highly criticize with its story and narrative it was said it is so convoluted, and out of phase but it in my opinion, it was the other way around. This just proves you don't always listen with what the critics says and i bet most of the people rated this game low are those who haven't even played the game (shame on you). this game is perfect and a MASTERPIECE! now I've finished the game and trying to get the platinum trophy

Once in a while you play a game that just fits with everything you like about playing games. Horizon Forbidden West is that extraordinary once in a while experience. What a phenomenal journey this game is!

Where its predecessor was fun but it just wasn’t convincing, part two does everything so well that it is one of the best and most fun games I've ever played.

The world is beautiful, the music fits into the overall picture and the combat is very satisfying right up to the last arrow you will shoot. Never before have I noticed almost no difference between main and side missions. Together with the incredibly detailed NPCs it really makes it worth looking beyond the main story.

I found the story intriguing and mysterious. Where I sometimes found the first part difficult to follow, this story was no less complicated but more accessible. Especially with the idea of what awaits Aloy, this was a worthy sequel to the story. Aloy herself has also grown in depth of her character. She is fierce, witty, funny, compassionate and has become a true icon for Sony Playstation.

I wouldn't call the game perfect. The performance mode on the PS5 is just awful. This game is made for 30 fps. Unlike the attack, Aloy can hardly defend herself. Roll or run is your only option. The photomode is limited compared to other games. The AI of machines are only focused on Aloy even in combat with a companion and sometimes you will be annoyed by the autosave that is missing in the open world. A number of points will certainly be improved through patches.

Nevertheless, this game is almost perfect and I did not expect to be so carried away in a world full of so much detail in environment, machines and people. Chapeau Guerrilla Games!!

    Pros:
    - Aloy
    - The world
    - The art design is outstanding
    - Character design
    - Machine design
    - Quests and mission design
    - Sound design
    - Story
    - Overal atmosphere - Graphics
    - Cinematic creativity in every scene

    Cons:
    - Performance mode is horrible on PS5
    - Defence Combat is limited
    - AI of machines are only focused on aloy even during combat with a companion
    - Missing autosave in the open world irritates sometimes
    - I wish there were more missions in the tropical erea
    - No blood in the whole game because of the PEGI 16 rating but it would make the game a little more mature

I am a HUGE fan of the first game!I 100% the game on PS4 and PC, I have named several pets after it, it really was a game that was a fresh breath of air for me and probably my favorite game of the last generation of consoles, but to be completely honest this sequal just missed the mark for me.

*I played this game on PS5*

    1. The game spends WAY WAY too much time telling you things you already know from the past game, I know they want new players to understand the story, but at times it just felt insulting. Literally the first 1+ hours of the game is more or less recapping the previous title and then contuniously reminds you through conversation throughout the game. 2. BLOAT and inefficient upgrade system. With more machines and animals it means that upgrading weapons becomes more tedious than in it was in it’s predecessor, I want to state that I dont mind having more variety of machines and animals, but honestly I much preferred the simplicity of the first game where if I wanted a weapon I just found the machine I needed, got the part, bought the weapon (or armor) and added coils… In HFW I have to get the parts to buy the weapon, get the parts from different machines for each upgrade, and its way more time consuming than it ever needed to be, and I guess that’s where alot of my problems stem from, everything was made to be more complicated than it was before and they took tasks that were simple before and made them an insulting waste of my time that made me just deal with being under equipped for most of the game, also the skill trees are primarily minor upgrades, but also give to ultimate abilities and like bonus weapon functions, but I’ll be honest, I really only ever activated them on accident.

    3. Performance and graphics. I want to state that the game is just as beautiful as the first! The performance is generally great… on Performance, but there were a few times were my game turned into a 8 FPS slideshow, specifically in winter areas, and I had to restart my PS5 to fix it. The resolution mode i was unplayable for me, I really wanted all those beautiful shots and vistas in the best graphics, but the poor performance of resolution mode quickly gave me a headache and the switch was made to performance mode for the rest of the game.

    4. I don’t want to spoil anything, but to me the big bads and then the reveal of an even bigger big bad at the end was for me just kind of like “Why?” I definitely feel like the game could have dropped these, tweaked the story a bit, change the villains to something a little less out there and it would have been better, suffice to say, the end of the game certainly does not have me itching to get a sequel.

In the end I dont think this game brought anything to the world of Horizon that added to either my enjoyment of the gameplay or the story itself, although I definitely feel like with some story tweaks and less bloat that this could have been a worthy successor, but for the time being of I want to scratch my horizon itch, I’ll start a NG+ on HZD, honestly I might just do that anyways to cleanse my pallet and get this bad taste out of my mouth.

This game, just like the first is the ladder and designed its story to exist in a cool universe they concepted. The developers however refused to take any lessons learned from the lackluster story of the first game and expected the setting and senary to take care of everything. That is why killzone failed, that's why horizon isn't known for its story and this game doesn't change that. It is a beautiful game and the devs should be commended for it. But is there a particular reason to come back to this game or even finish it the first time after All the pretty graphics fade into the background? Not really. I had high hopes for zero dawn to be my Skyrim replacement but it didn't come close. This game fell even further.

It is the most beautiful game I've seen.

Main Story + Side Quests 7.5/10
It's nice, however, the ending is a bit disappointing. It is much more interesting when the antagonist is human. The game still lacks catchy characters that can do smth without Eloy leading them. Eloy really lacks some dark side to look more like a real person (Beta is a more interesting character for me).

    Combat + Gameplay 8/10
It's also nice, my respect for tallneck/cauldrons/relic ruins. A lot of mechanics can bring fun, however, parkour can sometimes annoy. Combat can sometimes annoy you when robots don't give you a chance to stand up/heal.

Horizon forbidden west is an amazing game nearly everything zero dawn did great has been improved on graphically its stunning , facial animations have been improved . little touches such as the small cutscenes for most side quests adds to the beauty of this game and side quest while there is heaps and heaps dont feel like a huge or boring chore !! ..............

i really enjoyed the main story for the most part its was a great continuation of zero dawn by adding more futuristic aspects to the game BUT where zero dawn was a very well rounded story from start to finish i personally thought forbidden west's ending was a bit messy and weird not terrible not amazing ..........................

zero dawns ending left you satisfied yet hopeful and teasing a sequel yet but if not a satisfied ending to great game.......................

forbidden west not so much there is so many questions left unanswered and there needs to be a 3rd game which i will buy for sure but i just didnt feel it was as well rounded as zero dawn.....................

game play was great the mount ( spoiler less ) you earn late game makes for the best way to travel in horizon even defeats the purpose of fast travel packs in my opinion .................
the new tools glider, pull caster , etc make for great additions...........
if i was to complain about anything was all the added skills seemed a bit overwhelming and i personally prefer the simplistic nature of a few weapons and skills the first game..................

overall i give horizon forbidden west a 8.5 to 9 out of 10 and if you have played the first game this will not disappoint if not play the first and get this game !!

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
