Another Sony first party title knocked out of the park! Everything about this game is great just like zero dawn. Improvements were made and new things added that were needed. The only thing I didn’t like was a certain part of the story but not worth dropping it a point.

Probably the biggest disappointment in awhile. I had very high expectations. The story is bland and unimaginative, the game play is very boring. Even the lauded graphic are underwhelming. Really dropped the ball here.

Quite often there are bugs, but one bug just turned the whole impression of the game After I passed the Gemini, I went to do more sidequests and only after some time I went to base to crafting override for the Sunwing, but I can't do it. Can't restart the Wings of the Ten mission. There are no saves left before that mission. 60 hours in the game and that's it now it's a brick. I'm very frustrated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was more of the same from the first game. It was still fun, the graphics are updated but it took me a while to see the differences between this gen and last gen. I was finding bugs from time to time. Nothing ground breaking but enough that it was noticable. During one fight a stormbird in the north of the map (while finding armor of a warrior who died) the enemy phased through the map and was no longer fightable. I had to reload my save game twice as it happened a second time and the defeating the bird is a part of the mission. It was during its slam attack when it hit the ground it would just keep going through the map. That was the worst one and ate up about 30-45 minutes of redoing the mission and fight.

Overall I loved the game but it was lacking in areas. 8/10 will likely play again in the future bugs and all.

This game surpassed the first one in almost every aspect. It has intriguing side quests, the gameplay is more ambitious and the story is very engaging. I liked Zero Dawn a lot but this is a superior game in mi opinion. I'm 40 hours in and still have a lot of quests to do.

This game is revoltingly racist and sexist. It is poisoned by the “woke” agenda, the dialogue is dull and annoying and Aloy is just this cringe. Don’t indoctrinate your kids and don’t find this sort of thing. Many other better games out there that aren’t trying to reorder the world on extreme left wing ideals.

I very much enjoy the theme of Aloy learning to rely on others personally, and I understand why people keep claiming Aloy is a Mary Sue. Personally I only see this as an issue if this makes the protagonist not relatable, which I most definitely didn't experience with Aloy: I actually find her a very relatable protagonist for myself, being a person who struggles to let people close.

All this while making the game look absolutely gorgeous? Take my money.

-Repetitive combat: I got bored of the robot fighting pretty quick, and tried to avoid combat, which made traveling a chore
-Meh characters: I liked Aloy, but some core characters made me hard to care for them, so the long conversations just dragged on for me

Overall a very good game, just lacks the huge impact the first one had, mostly due to the loss of novelty of fighting the robots, and already knowing what hapoened to Earth.

I hate this 0 or 10 toxic nonsense. This is not a good or bad game it's a good game with bad elements like most games and most things in life. So out of 10 I'm giving a 5 to represent balance as this is a game about the balance of nature as much as the lack of balance in its many flawed systems.

The good ...are the graphics and the core gameplay loop. The music too. As well as the art

The good ...are the graphics and the core gameplay loop. The music too. As well as the art style. On ps5 it looks nice when it runs smoothly. The new robots are quite neat but too few dinosaurs.

The bad or less good... is the story and writing which is much worse than the first one without the amazing audio tape stories and suprise twist. The characters are better than the first forgettable ones but still pretty bland and generic. The sound is all over the place too either due to tech issues or possibly bad work. The new gameplay elements are fussy and overly complicated or grindy at times. Lack of any innovation or new ideas of note bring the otherwise competent title down. It has far too many glitches at launch with game breaking bugs. The performance even on ps5 is poor with fps often dropping below 25fps which isn't at all what was advertised.

It might seem like I have more complaints but in the grand scheme of things they only stop a good game being great again. To be blunt if you liked the original it's more of the same. But if you have a choice or just played the original then I recommend you start with that and the excellent dlc.

    7.5 / 10 fix the glitches 8/10

One point off because the save system is just plain old-fashioned. There is no reason to punish players when they die (or have to restart cause of bugs!), but that's exactly how it feels when you get thrown way back because you just forgot to run to the stupid campfires in the flow. This doesn't generate any added value for anyone.

Otherwise, it's again a lot of fun to go off with aloy!

I started the game on hard setting thinking yeah I got this and last night I injured my wrist from the 20 minutes I spent trying to take down a particular beast. if you love challenging fights then the hard modes of this game don't disappoint especially with the way you chew through the needed resources crafting ammunition but I digress.... The story is pretty much a direct continuation of Zero Dawn. It's beautiful to look at and beautiful to play. The release version seems to be a little buggy but not too bad, Alloy suffers from some facial anomalies akin to a stroke victim from time to time but nothing of consequence. I found bellowbacks front sacks were glitching in and out but they still exploded even though you appeared to be shooting nothing. I'm a completionist so I spend a lot of time on all the side quests which at times I find more entertaining than the main quest line and they offer great armour and weapon rewards. I have to say that the dialogue gets a bit tedious after a while. there is just soooo much of it. The open world is vast and can often seem empty but exploration is worth it when you find hidden places that contain much needed resources. I would give the game a 10 if it were not for just the little things that could have made it better. Controlling Aloy is sometimes awkward. she often gets stuck in a corner or jumps to far or when hit there is a delay before she will get up again probably to add to the realism. Some of the ammunition to resource costs are ridiculous. by far the worst aspect is that if you Die in a battle the beast rests with full health, weapons and armour whereas you reset with depleted munitions and resources. this makes no sense. These gripes are trivial to the epic job that the Dev's have done to bring this to life. Great game. Highly recommend. Expand

HFW gives you the exact same gameplay as HZD with a couple of added game mechanics and a few upgrades to the gaming experience. Unfortunately most of the major issues from HZD are also present in HFW: The terrible camera that allows foliage to come between the camera and your target, Arrows not making contact with enemies, the bow failing to shoot straight or not loading correctly. New improved climbing has been added but this just means more places for Aloy to climb, the actual climbing animations can be janky, unpredictable, and annoying. The main issue i have with HFW is the same one i had with HZD. The writing. The main story arc is fairly interesting but it is hampered by bland uninteresting characters, boring dialogue, generic tedious open world side quests and a ton of filler content. I enjoyed HZD despite it's issues and i have enjoyed HFW but it does little to escape the very typical open world tropes and with its mountain of bugs it is certainly not a 10 out of ten masterpiece...far from it. Phenomenal! A great sequel to Zero Dawn. This game series has climbed into my top 5. So many goosebumps and thrills. The side quests feel like main quest. Couldn't of asked for a better sequel. Thank you!

Best game ever in my opinion. The graphics is better than his predecessor and the world is so well made you just want to stay in it, and also very big (i would say twice the size of the old map), filled with many different activities which make you want to explore every corner of it. The map is populated by 43 types of machines, one more realistic than the other, each of them with 4/5 variants. And when it comes to fights, there are plenty of strategies you can use based on a lot of different kinds of weapons, an improved melee attack system and about 150 different skills, including combos and special abilities. Finally, the story and the side quests will make you want more and more answers and when they give them to you, they will leave even more questions, so you just want to keep playing to understand more. A must to play if you like the genre, but i strongly suggest you to play the prequel to better understand the story.

I also just want to say not to trust people who gives votes like 0/1/2 because they really means nothing. Like, what do you mean by 0? It's the same vote i would give to a game made by a 6 years old on Scratch in 15 minutes... (maybe i could even give it 1 :/ )

    Progressive gameplay:
I can't help to notice some lesser things though.
I found the game way easier than part 1 which got me to me to not exploring other ways of fighting or upgrading my gear whatsoever. Maybe I should've played on very hard, but I'm not sure if that would reward other playstyles or wanting to grind gear. Because of that, all lootdrops felt useless for me till the very end. This made the game pretty much a very very good cinematic experience for me.

    Story missions:
I'll try to speak spoiler-free, The main missions are all very well designed and cool. But the very last main mission seems te be rushed, short and with fights not very interesting and straight forward. Ik was kinda let down by it.

    Characters:
The character Aloy and all other characters are very well written with interesting backgrounds, except for Alva, I don't want to spoil things, but I didnt feel anything for her. Acting is off en her story is weirdly akward. Maybe it is supposed to be like that sice she comes from far away, but it wasn't for me and she didn't fit in the group if you ask me.

Aloy's acting is good, her story is great, but why do I get the feeling she has down syndrome every time she laughs or gives some other facial expression. It made me giggle and feel bad at the same time every time. Maybe it's just me but it made me leaving the immersion.

So all and all, maybe with all these negative points people think it's a bad game. It's not. It's really good. Its simply less hardcore-ish and grindy (which I kinda like) and could be a 10 with some small improvements. For me it's a big 9. I even want to play the sideqquests since they're close to Witcher3 standards.

Taking down rebel camps gets kind of old after the 10th one. It's better than the first part that came out back in 2017, it basically added onto that original game but didn't fix the more fundamental issues that have to do with writing, gameplay and open world design. It's very much by the numbers and perfectly serviceable, but as a result forgettable.

The graphics are simply amazing, but uninspired. It simply goes for realism which will get old

The graphics are simply amazing, but uninspired. It simply goes for realism which will get old quick in a few years. I would have liked it if they went with an unique art style or just had better design. The only inventive designs in the game are the robot animals, but the rest looks like the type of stuff we have in the real world sadly.

The writing and narrative is actually pretty bad, it follow your typical block buster type language but ultimately has nothing to say. Aloy herself has also become kind of an unlikable character, she's not too different from the first part but enough to make it feel strange and off. The ending, which i will not spoil, is especially terrible and ruins the whole thing in 20 minutes time flat.

They have a clear talent for game engine design and know how to output demanding high graphical effects, but in the gameplay, story, narrative, level and game design department they still need a lot of work.

However, in forbidden west, they addressed this to a whole nother level. The side quests are extremely entertaining, with characters that keep you interested in them and storylines that make them matter, sometimes having impacts on the main story. The main story in forbidden west is absolutely amazing as well. This game has the best facial models I have ever seen, and overall the graphics of the game are insane. The open world is so beautiful when I first started playing it took me something like 2 hours to finish the first mission because I caught myself just staring over every ledge and admiring the view. Many main characters return from the previous game, especially some of the most interesting ones. I have just completed the main story, with something like 73-74 hours of gameplay, including side missions and exploration. I will go back and get 100% trophies in this game for the first time ever in a game because it is that rewarding to keep playing it. 10/10, the best game I have ever played, and I have played quite a few, including god of war 2018. This beats it hands down, however I would say it is more necessary to ply horizon zero dawn first before playing forbidden west, while playing the previous 3 god of wars before god of war 4 is not really necessary at all. To start off I am a big fan of Zero Dawn, played it 3 times and have acquired 100% completion, it's a great game... with that Forbidden West is a DOWNGRADE from that experience.

    1. This game reeks of development scope creep, things are so much more over complicated then in Zero Dawn, they should keep K.I.S.S. acronym in mind when developing. 2. My favorite play style has been GUTTED!

There may be a "Infiltrator Skill Tree" but unless you plan to draw out fights for 5+ minutes, then direct combat is the only viable way to play now. Robots are afraid of tall grass, difficult to coax them in close enough even with stone throws, every bow ability breaks your cover, silent strike with fully upgraded spear abilities can't one shot trash mobs especially in later game (This is on normal remember). Stealth ability you unlock, even fully upgraded does not seem to work on Robots.

Other game plays have been gutted as well, if you like traps then your in for a shock as well, the deployment limits are very low now, the days of placing a few bombs and a full set of Tripcaster traps are gone and over.

    3. Weapons are a joke compared to Zero Dawn, they added in some interesting new gear but the standard ones from Zero Dawn are a joke.. having weapons just for one ammo type and flooding the game with variations is abysmal, and with the new upgrade system just adds to the grind to find upgrade materials. If I was Aloy I would make a trip back home to pick up the trusted and true weapons from Zero Dawn before trekking into the west.

    4. The game is not balanced, playing on normal and robots HP and Attack feel like "The Frozen Wilds" DLC on Ultra-Hard.. getting one shot by a Fanghorn in the starting area should not happen on normal difficulty

    5. Inventory management has been taken out of the hands of the player. You can only carry 1 stack of any item the remainder magically gets transported to your stash (Talk about immersion breaking - Horizon meets Harry Potter). Typically this is not an issue but if you like a specific type of ammo you may run out of the crafting materials when out in the field. They should have kept the old inventory system and have Aloy travel to the rest areas (There are many on the map) to deposit extras you don't want to carry.

    6. way... way.. way too many variation add on patches for weapons and armor

    7. Aloy gaining advanced tech through skill tree. Aloy is a user not a developer, a scientist, or an engineer... any sci-fi like gear should be acquired through diving into ruins or pilfering from dead enemies (This does happen in the game, the only one I am ok with story wise)

    8. Valor system sucks, I don't mind that you need to built it up but the use of a skill that uses Valor should NOT be on a timer all the time. For example... Stealth field should be on a timer but you should have the ability to turn it off to save Valor, Shield should just give you a direct heath buff / shield, bow abilities that say "5 shots" should last the 5 shots. The fact that every Valor skill is on a timer means you are being rushed to get your value out of it, as mentioned seems they favor / push the player always into direct frontal combat.

    9. Some NPC audio has a metallic reverb in it as if they where not recorded in a proper sound studio, they should have redone those parts, being out in the open and the NPC sounding like their in a metal box is very apparent.

Addition to reaching endgame / finally
    - Too many weapons again, and spend hours and days grinding for the upgrades
    - Colosseum combat is a mess, its just a brawl where Alloy spends most of her time face down in the dirt and stunned. Game auto chooses your equipment if you have multiple in your inventory, and the end fight of every category set gear is chosen, if you don't have a particular weapon then you simply loose a weapon slot and you are even more handicapped, also any upgrades you may have done to weapons or gear for those fights DO NOT count.
    - The melee completion fights start off as normal and progress to Ultra hard at the end, I like many others had to set difficulty to Easy just to pass them.
    - Story started off ok but then went sideways for me, did not like the Ted Faro plot and many other end game points.

(For all this garbage I have reduced my rating from a 6 to a 4, I have learned to hate this game)

    New things I like

    1. As mentioned some new weapons like the Javelins are fun additions.

    2. New and interesting Robots, always a plus

    3. Underwater play now

    4. Visually stunning as always, climbing to the highest peak and viewing the landscape is breath taking.

    Closing
I love the visuals of the game but I can't stop thinking "I wish this played like Zero Dawn" constantly, at times I feel like I am hate binging playing the game just for the story. GG has hinted at a 3rd game, they have burnt my faith away with this game and will not buy the next game with ought serious reviewing it first

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
