This game is amazing! I have been playing it for almost 80 hours and still cant get enough of the game. It has been getting so much undeserved grief online, where it has to meet impossible standards that games like Elden Ring or Legend of Zelda: BotW would NEVER have to.
I can only recommend this game...but play the first one first, otherwise you might not get the same experience.

+Long, but not too long: finished the main story and some sidequests in 36 hours
    +Great use of dualsense features

-Repetitive combat: I got bored of the robot fighting pretty quick, and tried to avoid combat, which made traveling a chore
-Meh characters: I liked Aloy, but some core characters made me hard to care for them, so the long conversations just dragged on for me

Overall a very good game, just lacks the huge impact the first one had, mostly due to the loss of novelty of fighting the robots, and already knowing what hapoened to Earth.

    Progressive gameplay:
I can't help to notice some lesser things though.
I found the game way easier than part 1 which got me to me to not exploring other ways of fighting or upgrading my gear whatsoever. Maybe I should've played on very hard, but I'm not sure if that would reward other playstyles or wanting to grind gear. Because of that, all lootdrops felt useless for me till the very end. This made the game pretty much a very very good cinematic experience for me.

    Story missions:
I'll try to speak spoiler-free, The main missions are all very well designed and cool. But the very last main mission seems te be rushed, short and with fights not very interesting and straight forward. Ik was kinda let down by it.

    Characters:
The character Aloy and all other characters are very well written with interesting backgrounds, except for Alva, I don't want to spoil things, but I didnt feel anything for her. Acting is off en her story is weirdly akward. Maybe it is supposed to be like that sice she comes from far away, but it wasn't for me and she didn't fit in the group if you ask me.

Aloy's acting is good, her story is great, but why do I get the feeling she has down syndrome every time she laughs or gives some other facial expression. It made me giggle and feel bad at the same time every time. Maybe it's just me but it made me leaving the immersion.

So all and all, maybe with all these negative points people think it's a bad game. It's not. It's really good. Its simply less hardcore-ish and grindy (which I kinda like) and could be a 10 with some small improvements. For me it's a big 9. I even want to play the sideqquests since they're close to Witcher3 standards.

    Cons:
    - Minor technical errors here and there, the game is well polished, but sometimes I can come around some weird ones
    - Aloy's hair physics is janky, come on Guerilla you had 5-6+ years to fix this...

Guerilla can be proud of this entry, after this masterpiece they HAVE to make a third Horizon game. Can't wait how Aloy's journey will continue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had to take time to rate the game, play it a good amount to be able to give a fair rating. At first impact it was a 10, great game loved it, the more I played the more I realized I despised Aloy attitude, she is an hero, but a cold one, no real human interaction no deepness, no possibility to have a real moment from her. While this is true for her the side characters are good and well constructed. The game play is great l, good controls and mechanic, side quests enrich the world but at the cost of being silly at times aloy doesn't stop for a friend but does to talk about someone else silly stuff. The platforming in. Any situation is there to slow you down, with no other good reason to exist. The item menu is still the same. Of the first game and could have been improved in a wheel, like for the main weapons. The open world is amazing, the world. Is rich and alive, breath taking at times, different quest and activities are present for you to enjoy it more. A must have game as the game play is very good, the hunt and the other mechanics are fantastic but it is not an innovating game. A pity as if they did include more human touch from aloy it would have been a 9, still it is a game that let you play it and love it. Expand

But at the beginning, the gameplay & story were a bit too boring and repetitive. There’s was a basic formula. Ride quite a way to a destination- which is either a village or a cave. At the village you just talk to the chiefs and get permission to go further west. In the caves you just find relics of the past civilization. There’s climbing, some challenges, and some puzzles. By about 9 hours in I thought I was going to stop playing. But then the game got better. It got more exciting with more action. It was better the farther west you go- like to Las Vegas & San Francisco. I would have liked more time in San Francisco. I waited 5 years for this sequel and thought it would be great. I’m altering my original rating to an 9/10 or 4/5. Expand

    Pros:
    - stunning visuals and music. The best looking game I've ever seen. Both from artistic and technical standpoint. - almost every subsystem has been improved in comparison to previous game. Dialogues are better. Cutscenes are prettier. Fights has been changed so it is fresh and better balanced.
    - comparing to other games, handling equipment is not so much a hustle. Many things are done automatically or with a single tap. E.g. you see how many items of a type you have when you are browsing merchant wgoods.
    - great open world. Various activities. A lot to do and it does not get boring
    - base and companions with their stories are great addition

    Cons:
    - story is not as engaging as in the first game. The ending feels weird.
    - the world seems artificial sometimes. The tribes which are presented as brutal, are very polite and tolerant when you engage with them. I would say too polite. I would expect more cruelty from them
    - lack of choices. We are just choosing hthe tone of our reply but most of the story will happen regardless.
    - the protagonist is blant and barely likeable.

I am truly taken a back as to how great this is. I don't do meta critic reviews, but again I am so impressed. The criticisms of the story are way overblows, its wonderful, and while I get a lot of people just skip stuff I am NOT one of those people. The only fault I had with it was its flimsy set-up that initially leads into the game - even with the reap video it doesn't gel like it should. The dialogue, the acting, and oh the incredible technology they use to bring movie like motional cap into real time - all just creates an insane level of authenticity to the story and characters that so impressive its jarring!

I've never been so captured by how a game implements its quests and world jobs other than say The Witcher 3 as well, there is a distinct lack of a grind feeling, and a huge feelings of just exploring and experiencing - even simple quests are wonderfully engaging and don't fall into usual Open World tropes - amazing.

Look I cannot say enough about this, it was on special (I think still is) and I got it, and I realise now that its worth every single dollar of the full price anyway. It gives so much and the fact that I haven't even talked to you about the graphics should say enough about how impressive this game is. Its incredible - buy it.

    1. annoying bugs. I've had a Leaplasher jumping all around me as if I didn't exist, duplicated machines that have no physical contact, and audio disappears randomly during cutscenes. not game-breaking, just annoying
    2. the path waypoints need significant rework. it does not point out the exact direction for you, but rather a pre-selected path for you to follow, which means sometimes it will ask you to go in an entirely opposite direction before it redirects you to the right one. it's frustrating and stupid.
    3. some side contents are just BS on any difficulty that is higher than normal, namely the Arena challenges. there is no f-ing way anyone can complete them in such a limited time. and it makes me question the design decisions.
    4. Aloy's character development took a very very long time. i disliked her so much in the beginning, it demotivated me to engage in any side quests because she always says the same thing to everyone who wants to be nice to her, "oops, sorry, no time to talk, gotta go" "I don't need no nobody, I've got a world to save, get outta my way"

Enough ranting. As I said, I still enjoyed the whole game and there are plenty of reasons for me to keep playing. Not to mention the gorgeous graphics and really impressive animation work.

Combat is varied and satisfying, though I would say it improves massively around halfway once you have most of the weapons and abilities. It can be quite repetitive and frustrating at times, early on, and a bit overwhelming given how much there is to learn. As for the criticisms...

Platforming/climbing is sub par compared to the likes of Tomb Raider and Uncharted.

I found the story a convoluted Macguffin chase, with the writers struggling to hold together a compelling plot, plus a cliffhanger ending leaving it feeling somewhat unfinished. The cutscenes keep the sometimes tedious and overwrought dialogue of the original. Some interesting ideas though, and the overall world is still fascinating. Sylens is the highlight as far as characters go.

    - subtle yet noticeable woke-ness (black female smiths ex.; it's cool but not very logical) sometimes brakes the immersion

    Conclusion:
Perfect 10/10? Of course not, but damn fun and improves every aspect from HZD adding new gameplay mechanics and more live open world. Regarding side content, yes, it's improved but don't play this game 100h, also don't rush main story in 25h. Take some middle ground with more interesting side content and you're in for a blast (especially with good HDR TV)

While the story and gameplay didn't blow me away like the first game did, that's mostly because the first game was so surprising, and this game is building on what came before. It improves in some interesting ways, even if not all the new features wow'ed me. The new mobility options were pretty great, and the late game flying was incredible, but it's heard to match the first time I ever fought a robo-dinosaur...

The story wasn't quite as poignant as Zero Dawn, but was a worthy second effort, and didn't damage the legacy the first game, which is more than many sequels can claim.

Ultimately, I got more Horizon, which is what I wanted, and the fact it's *almost* as good as the first game puts it miles ahead of most games out there.

Visuals are stunning, gameplay is extremely fun and diverse. You can take down mechanical beasts in a hundreds way possible. The skill tree is huge with a lot of specialities that makes your gameplay unique. Animations are top notch with a great story, a great sequel for a great game that paves the way for a final third installment.

Good. Not Great. I really wouldn't agree with everyone saying it's better than the original. Bigger is not always better. The main failure is they have gone too heavy with Aloy becoming a bit of a know-all and you feel she is patronizing to the NPC's (leading to alienating the player slightly) due to the script writing. Some of her dialogue is literally cringe-worthy at best. The story becomes very convoluted because of this and there are no real surprises. Aloys constant narrative about where to go and what to do does become grating after a while. If the script was in place then maybe this wouldn’t matter so much and you would overlook it. Where the first game succeeded hugely, I feel this falls flat, if there is a third installment, I hope they can get the script and the flow right. This game should really have been a discovery of the West - like in the first game you felt as the player you were discovering the world and her story, just like she was. The heavy-handed ‘Aloy is here to save the world and she knows everything’ approach really should have been saved for the third game. I REALLY cared about Aloy in the first game – not so much in this one… I felt like I was just along for the ride. Expand

I played on a PS5 with resolution mode on. I reached the level cap of 50. I did not fully enhance all of my gear. I focused on Infiltrator and Hunter in Aloy's skill tree then spent excess skill points across all others.

I had high hopes for this following New Dawn and I can't truly say I was disappointed but when I got past the stunning graphics (minor glitches forgiven) and complex storyline the additional complexity of the game mechanics forcing one back to older areas because it takes a future obtained item to be able to get past an obstruction was frustrating. The lack of ability to climb (being forced to use identifiable designed pathways) was often frustrating.

The realisation that choices that felt like they should have been significant had little bearing on the actual game outcomes was a disappointment although a few that produced world cosmetic changes were good.

The huge number of conversation choices, particularly with companions, became frustrating instead of informative.

The "completionist" objectives were gratuitously excessive.

The ridiculous twitch mechanics parkour profoundly frustrating. The complexity of ruins puzzles unnecessarily high.

Some combat encounters in quests not progressing as they should have (probably bugs that will eventually be fixed) a huge time waster.

I thought I would be annoyed by most of the best "gear" being hidden behind arenas irrelevant to the story but I completed without.

I don't think I have been so frustrated in a game that I have also enjoyed enough to simply skip the frustrating parts to complete the game.

I was very reluctant about what rating to give this game, because my opinion about it is very ambiguous, if on the one hand I really liked Zero Dawn, on the other hand Forbiden West disappointed me in some points, starting with the similarity (and not in a good way) everything I've ever done in Zero Dawn is done again and exactly the same in Forbiden West, from the plot of the quests to be done around the map, converting Tallnecks, saving tribes that always come into conflict with other tribes, making the Cauldrons, everything exactly just as we had already spent hours doing in Zero Dawn, apart from the point that displeased me was the amount of bugs in the scenario, enemies that I have to complete a quest by killing but they are inside the wall, Aloy crossing places that should be on top and falls into the floor forcing me to climb all over again, the controls that are extremely unpredictable and loose, causing Aloy to have jerky, rough movements when you need subtlety to balance or jumping into something, I also had a game crash that closed by itself and a bizarre frame rate drop that forced me to close the game and reopen it to solve it, very disappointing is also the fact that this game doesn't run at 60 FPS at 4K it's almost unacceptable, you can clearly see that you're playing a game developed on PS4 and ported to PS5, apart from the performance mode which is blurry and choppy and of poor resolution, the main story I don't complain, it's not as bad as it gets they say, but unfortunately this game is a big CtrlC + CtrlV with small additions that don't leave you with the feeling of playing something new, just an expansion, the old one more of the same, I regret having bought this game at launch.

This is for all those horrible reviews with no constructive purpose or Alloys' appearance. To whom complains about graphics: Stick to a PC & Wait for PC Release. Also - Sell your PS5 to someone who wants it. This game is certainly next-gen for those hating on the graphics. Infact this game is absolutely fantastic, a worthy sequel that equates to a phenomenal series.

Let's start by highlighting this game is not a slap-stick release of another game much like Call of Duty or Battlefield. There have been reviews that indicate this game is the same as the last and that's far from true.

    Highlights:
With graphics and faces we must dig a little deeper as this is a special area; as graphics improve overtime, people are having a harder time being convinced what they see on a TV screen. Years ago one would gawk and say, "Look how real it appears". We must acknowledge humans have a dedicated brain function for 'facial recognition' to summarize. This makes faces and graphics a complicated concept. Defects may be perceived as 'errors' in modern games during conversations in the form of a 'lack of expression' or appearing 'emotionless'. Horizon Forbidden West addresses this & leaps forward with nuanced facial expressions; overcoming a development plateau that is really just beginning of modern development. An incredible accomplishment.
Landscapes design within the open world amount to an incredibly well-polished experience; a gift. Day and night lighting effects with dense trees, foliage, rivers, and ocean amount to a never-ending experience. One could climb the highest peak in the mountains and gaze at the world and its sunset without blinking. Character design and modeling is done meticulously and with thoughtfulness to the story. Details between regional tribes & specific gear is vast. The Stars of the Show: The Machines which make a true next generation experience. State of the art graphics depict a number of strange metallic savanna mammals & amphibious reptiles that dot the landscape appearing as a distant subtle glow of blue light that changes like a traffic light to yellow and then an angry red as you approach, becoming aggressive while you do so. Engaging with these beasts is different than other games as you are constantly on the move; on-the-run fighting with the metallic environmental beasts. This must be how man was two-thousand of years ago. One can only conclude this is why burials began; so the dead would be safe from that harsh environment they faced throughout their lives.

    Improvements?
There are some things to be had from some of conversations and pushing of the main story but overall, its above average. The worst is she appears to now be a woke man-hater, which is odd since she was raised by her father and banished by a bunch of old crones. Maybe that's just me looking too deep. Maybe that's how she is now? Mean and bitter? But she is still a female so only minus 1 point. Music and voice acting are up to par.

    Details:
Alloy has quite a different skillset, multiple skill trees, but not complex, specialized skills depending on the branches one chooses to pivot in their advancement. Combat has many changes but improved controls such as the gyro motion-controls; these make all the difference when accomplishing total destruction of machines or a miserable bloodbath for yourself.
Alloy is Agile now! Her mobility has much improved. More than we know! Hours of experimentation will be needed to find her limits. Definitely a lot of running, sliding, and shooting. She can even body sled downhill which is combat effective when engaging from high ground. Sliding can also be interrupted for a change of plans. Joined with combat; the dynamics go on. Experiment! Mount leaping while firing, etc, There is a whole lot more than its predecessor and is now more that is comparable to "Zelda BOTW". Another great improvement.

Inventory has improved but most of all you get a stash. Collect too much stuff? Can't figure out what to trash or store while on the move? No worries, Alloys stash keeps you running while your hands are full which was much needed in the last game.

Alloy herself has more facial detail and yeah, she is speckled with freckles - get over it; she is still nice and tight where it counts.

Finally in conclusion - There have been many money grabs in the gaming industry for the last 2 years, I hate to dampen the negative score review party, but this game is not a money grab. There will probably be a great many games released this year that will warrant game of the year nominations when compared to the last 2 years which was a money grab frenzy and three times the number of bad flops. This game is not a flop, not even close. It's not an old experience. Not a bad one. Awesome maybe? A familiar story with a tremendous revamp. Hard to find its likeness in the sequel world of gaming.

This game surpassed the first one in almost every aspect. It has intriguing side quests, the gameplay is more ambitious and the story is very engaging. I liked Zero Dawn a lot but this is a superior game in mi opinion. I'm 40 hours in and still have a lot of quests to do.

Doing as all sequels should aspire to, this game took everything that made the original great and made it even better. A story that makes you gasp, lovable characters both old and new to journey with, stunning visuals, pleasing music, intense combat, more quests and exploration are just some of the many ways this game has soared to greater heights than its predecessor.

Taking place immediately after the events of the first game, Forbidden West doesn't try to cater to new players in the slightest and instead directly reaches to the players who not only played the first game, but also played the side missions and DLC. This love of embracing the world and story they created is felt immediately as it shows nothing in this game is meaningless - everything down to the side quests and data you find has relevance, and sometimes returns in the best possible way. Not only are the characters deeper and more expressive in this game, but the way you interact with them has vastly improved with conversation animations and increased dialog as the game goes on. Every side quest has unique cutscenes which makes them feel equal to the main story quests, with the only difference between the two being cutscene quality. This is where Forbidden West shined the brightest for me as I was always invested in every character and their story even if they weren't apart of the main cast, and made the whole journey more emotional as a result. The best part is there are dozens of these quests, so at every twist and turn there are isolated stories just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

With a bigger, more diverse, and more beautiful world, exploration feels better than ever. No matter where you stop to look the scenery is screenshot worthy, with music playing that's soothing and relaxing. The soundtrack in general is a real knockout with occasionally full songs playing during major story events, making the overall game feel more cinematic at ever step. Several new machines with incredible designs were added that look just as intense as they are to fight, and the game arms you with lots of new weapons and status ailments to take them on. No matter where you look, there's always something new to find.

It's hard to say in only a few short words how big of a payoff this Horizon Forbidden West is, but there are few sequels I think are as incredible as this one. In every element and respect of what you could love from the original there's simply more of it here. More story, deeper plot. More characters, with greater development. More open world, with more machines filling it out and things to find. More quests, with even more varying types of missions. This game is a true achievement in not only how far the team has come since the first game, but how far open world games have come in five years by delivering the perfect balance of a cinematic masterpiece and an exploration game. I loved the original game, but it's sequel is one I'm in love with. I can now proudly say with two amazing entries that the Horizon franchise is one of Playstation's absolute finest, and a must play for everyone.

Truely improved on so many levels, I haven't been able to put the game down ever since it released.
Biggest improvement is how they've managed to make their NPC's so expressive that it's much easier to connect to them and remember them. The facial expressions are genuinely believable and relatable, during the main storyline ASWELL as some random side quests.

Biggest improvement is how they've managed to make their NPC's so expressive that it's much easier to connect to them and remember them. The facial expressions are genuinely believable and relatable, during the main storyline ASWELL as some random side quests.

I think this improvement in facial expressions is also one of the biggest reasons why Aloy's looks have somewhat changed; If we look at Hannah Hoekstra (original 3D model) and Ashley Burch (Voice actress, motion capture), Ashley has much rounder cheeks and much higher rising cheekbones when laughing for example. To make the facial expression motion capture work on the level it is at in this new game, I'm fairly sure they had to tweak the facial structure and proportions closer to Ashley's.

I also thought Aloy looked off and off-putting in some of the pre-release trailers, but in my honest opinion, she looks nice in the game. Especially as I've played as her and relate to her, she's a fantastic character and I love how she has absolutely no patience for nonsense when the stakes are so high.

The frustrations of a person who knows much more than the tribal level citizens have been well depicted, without overdoing it.

I'm also positively surprised how the plot has managed to still maintain my interest so well, 45 hours in now. I was worried that the first game already "spilled the beans" on the big plot twist and that it'd be hard to make the second one as interesting, but they've managed to pull it off really well.

I personally haven't been put off by the noisy/shimmering qualities of some foliage. I do notice it's there if I focus on it, but it hasn't been a bother at all. Didn't notice it before it was talked online. (Dunno if my Samsung Q70 QLED's just displaying it differently from some OLEDs or so)
The game looks absolutely gorgeous and the amount of screenshots I've already taken with photo mode is through the roof.

    My biggest gripes are;

-Some of the bigger enemies, like Rockbreaker are annoying to fight against, as in general you either fight them from far, sniping them and whittling them down from a cliff OR you get close. First one gets boring after repetition and the second one can be frustrating, as the enemies have lunge attacks where they jump from under ground or the distance and Aloy's dodge roll doesn't cover the distance that the attack is wide. So even if you roll at a perfect time, the hitbox still punishes you.
But that aside, I feel like the difficulty has been at a good place, first at normal and then bumping it a little higher as I got better and more skills/weapons.

    - Aloy talking too much. Especially bothersome when there's some sort of a puzzle and before you even get to think about it, Aloy narrates "to herself" what she should do. I'd much rather have the time to look around and piece it together myself, even if it's a simple puzzle to begin with. Also the repeated lines about her stash and some instances where if you get close to something that she comments on, then back away a little and come immediately back, you get the same line again.

    - Tutorial hints even after 40+ hours into the game where the game says you can scan machines with Focus or "Hold square to glide" etc. even once I have even turned contextual tips off.

Still, an incredibly well put together package that was easily the price I paid; 49 euros for a PS4 physical that I then upgraded to PS5 digital free.

Really a shame that some people sabotage the game with 0/10 scores. I understand not liking it as much, but 0/10 is just dishonest every time, there's nothing more to it.

Very much recommended especially for everyone who enjoyed the first one.

The side quests are so intense and you can really feel that you have impact in the world. This game is a masterpiece. I really hope it win the goty of 2022. Although, there is some issues with gameplay that was annoying during gameplay, like some fights where the evade button didn't work properly or the AI of the enemies machines that where too agressive sometimes taking away our chances of not getting hurt. Aloy usually talking what to do or how to do, and talking about the invetory everytime she gets an item that is full in her pocket (it did get a patch and it is way better( . She constantly gets stuck in the environment, it can anoy during exploration and fights. Not something that could spoil the experience, but definitely shows that the game isn't 100%.
The graphics are exactly what i was expecting from a new game of the next generation. It is amazin to see the particles effects of dust, the leaves flying as the wind blows, Aloy hair physics, the machines reactions to elements and to damage. Everything is so natural that most of the time we can forget it is a videogame. There is good accessibility options, if you'd prefer to show where she can climb all the time, you can enable it in the options. The guide of missions though sometimes show the further direction you have to go instead of all the path, but does not happen often.
Now the most incredible feature of the game is its story. What a plot. Will not say much, but the sci-fi and the connections to the past (our present) is magnificent. It leads you to want to know more and more about what happened and how Aloy and her friends are going to deal with it. Of course that you must have played the first game paying attention to its story as well, so you don't get lost at what is happening, because it is a direct continuation of the first game.
HFW is a must play and generation defining title. Hope everyone enjoys it as i did.
The game is exactly what it tried to show us.

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
