This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, before I say anything here, let me make something very clear: Anything I say in this review is based off of my own personal experiences and opinions with this particular game/DLC and/or the Horizon franchise as a whole. When I dislike something, that does not give one a valid reason to take it to the "extremes", regardless of their take on the matter. Everyone has different preferences, backgrounds and motives, and it is wrong to assume exactly what they are based on just one or two reviews, specific or not. That's all.

With that out the way, here's my review. I divided it into a list of things I liked/disliked/am not sure about.

    Things I liked:
There are a lot of aspects I enjoyed in this DLC. For instance, the Zenith arm cannon. It's like a quicker version of the Boltblaster - albeit not as powerful - but with a powerful railgun mode you can get after upgrading it! I think this was by far a nice addition. I also really enjoyed the new machines, those being the Bilegut, Stingspawn, and of course, the Waterwing. The Stingspawn were my favorite because they are small, cool, and remind me of some futuristic sentry drones.
The clouds were also an awesome addition; I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I would stare at their bare realism and vibrance, which is especially shown when the sun sets.
The much-anticipated Horus battle was something of its own. It was lots of fun while it lasted, and was a truly rewarding defeat. I hope to see more in the next sequel.
I thought Londra was a fairly good villain. Sure, he's a nutcase, but so was Faro and the Eclipse guys from the first game.

But you know what I loved the most? Gildun!!! He was by far the best character introduced in Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds DLC - which was great by the way - and I enjoyed every second of him. Although the encounter was quite short compared to the first one, from what I can remember.
I also think the Horus resting behind the Hollywood sign was a hilarious detail. After all, it's basically robo-Godzilla, is it not?

    Things I'm not sure about:
The new additions to the skill tree were fine to say the least, though I will admit I'm not too crazy about that stuff. I'm not sure if I've even used them yet. I just wanna get the 100% trophy, y'know?
The map was okay, but too much of it is submerged underwater; however, unlike Las Vegas in the base game, there isn't a ton of awesome stuff to find down there. Not that I go underwater a lot. As for the size, I would say that while it is significantly smaller than the main map, Frozen Wilds' map was also quite small, roughly the same size as this one.
Most of the characters I met throughout the DLC are fine, but I don't remember the names of half of them; of course, that's a given for some NPCs in an open-world game. As far as Seyka goes, well, I guess she's ok as well, but not as memorable as any of the other main characters we've met like Zo, Kotallo, Erend and Beta. I also have some sour feelings for Seyka, not so much for her connection with Aloy, but just her character and personality in general.
Of course, no character is as memorable as Gildun, who's the best by a long shot.
The DLC itself was rather lackluster for what it sells for, but is still somewhat worth playing nevertheless.

    Things I dislike:
Ooooh boy, I just can't wait for the heat to kick in. That's right everybody, this is where I dislike stuff. Nasty, right? Let's go!
First off is the bugs. Why do they have so many legs? Why do they cause glitches and problems? I mean, the Waterwing's diving mechanic is cool, but it is oftentimes painful to use because I keep getting stuck whenever I go anywhere near underwater ground, even when I'm not even touching it. It's also the most underused mechanic by far, only being utilized in like one short quest in which the bug really causes problems. There are probably more bugs that I forgot about though, so I guess that's good?
Next up is duration and scarcity. And I don't just mean with the DLC itself, but with all the side quests and machines and stuff. Not only are we visiting the same general areas for most of the quests, but they are also very short-lived and did not really introduce much of value. To say the least, the map is not very abundant with fun and worthwhile stuff, and this definitely does not complement the technical wonders it has to offer. If anything, it felt more like a tiny dish served to you at an expensive restaurant... so to speak.
And now for the thing that's been kicking up dirt: Why the heck is Aloy lesbian?!1? I'm just as disgruntled as you are... or not. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of other was to do it, but as quite a few of the "sensitive snowflakes" have said, it felt forced and rushed. This is why character development is important! Of course, it is just one dialogue. But I care for the character I am playing as much as I do fighting robot dinosaurs!

Overall, I think the DLC is fine, but could have offered more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last night, credits rolled on Burning Shores. It didn't save Forbidden West for me. Though the Horus fight was something special!

I have a lot of feelings, thoughts, and opinions. And in the current climate, most of those feelings, thoughts, and opinions cannot be voiced for fear of being called a bigot.

Anyway, long story short: I went into Burning Shores already knowing about the "optional" scene with Seyka. While I had my misgivings about what the true intentions of Guerilla might have been, I went into the story with an open mind. I wanted to see how Aloy and Seyka's "relationship" matured. If, at the end of the game it felt right, I'd choose "heart."

    It didn't feel right.

Burning Shores is much, much shorter than Frozen Wilds. There just wasn't enough time for a "relationship" to blossom. It felt rushed. It felt shoe-horned in. Dare I say, it felt contrived.

I'll leave you with this one other tidbit. There have only been two "romance" options in the Horizon franchise. Only two. One with King Avad, and now one with Seyka.

If you choose "heart" with Seyka, you see two women kiss. If you choose "heart" with Avad... Nothing happens. You don't see a man and a woman kiss.

    Why?

    I think that's a very valid question.

For now, Horizon Forbidden West remains a 6/10 for me. Burning Shores was not the salvation I'd hoped for.

I'll eventually obtain the last few trophies from Burning Shores (I'm not in any rush to do so), and then - likely - will not return to Forbidden West for a long, long time.

    If ever.

I am also a huge fan of lava, so this game is hitting the spot. The way they worked in various aspects of Los Angeles into the story was very clever, I'll leave it at that to prevent spoiling things. On top of all that, the gameplay is fun as hell. There's nothing better than taking off pieces of giant robot animals like a surgeon. New story, environments, weapons, armor, robots, and skills are here and they open up some interesting play styles/strategies. I love the story presented here, as well as the over-arching story of the series. When I see the reaction of some of the gaming community to this story, I become ashamed to call myself a gamer. Aloy is such an awesome hero. Dry as hell delivery by Ashly Burch, like Clint Eastwood with heart. Aloy's general stoicism makes the subtle moments of humor and emotion hit hard. These Horizon games are absolute classics. Some day they will be more fully appreciated. This game, and The Last of Us Part II, will be held up as examples of video games as influential works of art, and advancements of the media. All of that and, most importantly, this game is FUN! They are now testing ways to prevent users from voicing their concerns on this and other platforms, labeling anyone with criticism a bigot, a racist a sexist, a this and that or any of the other buzz words that doesnt mean anything anymore.

While I´ve always thought of this franchise as a Ubi clone, vast open world that is incredibly boring and souless, they have now release an incredibly buggy DLC which has a terrible story on par with the main games, and now dwells into identity politics and "The agenda" or "The message".

Like always instead of creating something from scratch that has "the current thing" in mind, these Multi billion dollar corporations decide to co-opt pre-established characters and narratives, in which people have hundreds of hour invested in and force them to accept out of character development.

I would have prefered to have a solid DLC that was more focoused on a better story, while presenting itself as it does, since the visuals are top notch (although very buggy). The DLC is incredibly short, the antagonist underdeverloped, and the side quests almost irrelevant.

I would avoid this since, its ultimate goal is to turn every single character on Sonys library into something they are not, just to appease the WEF international point rating system of diversity and inclusion. And if your not aware thats where most financing for these projects come from. Its all a grift for money, at the expense of the paying customer.

I always regard DLCs as testing grounds for new game mechanics and Burning Shores doesnt disappoint when you get into testing out all the new ways you can use your surroundings in battle, the new skill surges, new weapons its amazing and you can get lost in immersive battle.... however HZD is at its heart a story driven game, quests, lore, narrative and i feel like all of that has been put on the back burning in favour of game mechanics WHICH I GET. because if you focus on that you cant deny the game is awesome, even the new flying machine the seamlessnwas you can dive in and out of water is so much fun (though some under water battling mechanics really need to be worked on which i think the ps5 should be able to handle). And you can see the excitement and passion of the teams behind it all. but without it youve got a very short game with not much else. which really lets it down.

if you forget about the last year waiting and play the dlc as if it were an after game mini quest then it works and provides a cliffhanger type thing that fleshes out Forbidden West but because its so short you just cant view it the same way as frozen wilds which iv played again is alot more chunky. the relationship between aloy and seyka i get it but its missing depth, forbidden west was aloy starting off in isolation just like sobeck until varl gets through to her and then erand and then everyone after her relationship with beta saw her claiming her as her sister and even her views on sylens going from wanting to murder him for betrayal to working on breaking his isolation like shes done with herself as she now sees "it takes a village" so yeah heading off on a side quest and suddenly crashing into a new area and this person out of nowhere who can handle themselves in battle just as well would take the wind out of aloy which i guess is what they tried to do, it just felt a bit weak and a bit forced. iv personally been here for aloy being asexual i dont understand why a female protagonist ALWAYS has to be attached. the relationships formed with all the other characters have so much more to them. Seykas story arch just seem a bit rehashed from previous characters weve already engaged with. If your going to start adding in relationship arcs then your looking at heading down the same road as witcher and assassins creed (odyssey) and having multiple choice with multiple outcomes... which doesnt sit well because the games never been about that.

writers whats going on? but the main bugbear is the lack of anything todo. HZD is just expected to have quests, side quests, stumbling upon random things as well as non quests, lore, characters theyve all been so rich but that has all gotten a side step in favour for focusing on gaming mechanics, which I get, i was just a little disappointed for the other stuff.

So in general the DLC is amazing to play as long you play directly after finishing Forbidden West as an extended scene/cut scene. its almost like a pre DLC.... SO BRING OUT MORE DLCS BEFORE THE BIG FINALE! for the developers and teams please more quests, more depth. Dont start going down a road of style over substance please please PLEASE! i get your excited about the capabilities the PS5 can bring but dont loose sight of the games core, the stories and lore that make HZD what it is

***** and for everyone else still bemoaning the fact its not out for PS4 the PS4 is 10years old, its old tech, trying to play this game on it would be like asking for HZD to be released for the oringal PS just get over it, tech moves forward, unless your agaisnt us having holodecks in the future sushup and stop downgrading an amazing game just because you cant afford to playit its unfair yes allround but its shocking todo that to the developers and teams of people that pour so much into these games. Game development and game mechanics need more powerful consoles end of, its non argument.

The DLC’s final battle is the real showstopper and delivers on what many fans have wanted to see for the past few outings.

The pro’s of the DLC are not without their cons. There are some graphic glitches like minor holes in the map from a distance and certain machines glitching from time to time, but nothing an inevitable patch can’t fix in the coming weeks. Some areas of the map don’t have much to offer and the rewards for some sidequests are just facepaints and items of no great value.

Overall, there are some great action set pieces and great humour threaded throughout. The story is fairly short, but rewarding and it sets a new bar for the potential visual quality of what’s to come in the planned trilogy’s final chapter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It still plays like Forbidden West for better or worse.

    Pros:

    - Fighting against the new mechanized creatures is still spectacular and a lot of fun.

    - The overworld looks fantastic again, in my mind even better than in Forbidden West, because they thankfully reduced the amount of atmospheric fog and haze in the sky so that you actually can see objects in the distance now, which gives the world a much clearer look.

    - It's also pretty fun to cruise around with your new boat between all of those small islands, with every island almost being its own micro biome, with different enemy types and architecture on it.

    Cons:

    - There are only 2 new creatures and you can easily play through the expansion in 6 hours.

    - Climbing and parkour still feel very glitchy and inconsistent.

    - The paraglider still does not feel floaty enough.

    - Riding the robots still feels very clunky.

    - More aquatic robots to ride underwater would have been nice, because diving with Aloy feels really slow and tedious, but then again there is not much underwater exploration anyway.

    - The grappling hook still feels awkward to use. It's basically just a glorified teleporter. Being able to swing freely, even if only on specific points, would have been way more fun.

    - NPC characters still constantly annoy you by nonstop running around with you and voice line spamming you about every detail. They toned it down maybe a little bit, but it's still very noticeable.

    - Melee Combat still doesn't feel quite right, with really long drawn out melee animations, where Aloy spins for seconds around her own body axe before finally attacking.

    - And the level and dungeon design is still in a spectrum between mediocre and dissapointing. All of the areas look fantastic, but gameplaywise they are just Ubisoft open world game design, which simply can't compete with better designed bosses, dungeons and areas of games like Dark Souls, Eldenring, Sekiro or Breath of the Wild.

    - Also, almost all of the (caucasian) males in this expansion and in FW are being portrait as stupid, incompetent, narcissistic and/or villainous (Londra, Zeth, Rheng, Ted Faro, Gerard Bieri, Erik Visser, CEO ), while all of the female (minority) characters are portrait as wise and resourceful leaders. So basically just like in any of the Hollywood movies of the last 10 years, which is kind of meta, because Burning Shores plays in Hollywood locationwise.

And even if you like woke content, the story in Burning Shores is still not very good.
Its one of those typical "dlc-storylines" which add absolutely nothing of importance or interest to the lore. Personally I have nothing against the new character "Seyka" being lesbian, but the character is simply not well written. Fifty percent of the time she is whining and complaining and the other fifty percent she is literally worshiping Aloy. And none of both is very interesting to watch. The dialogue between both is also something which you would expect from a fanfiction project, but nothing you would expect from a hired writer, qualitywise. The fight against the giant mech is low key kind of cool tho, even if it was way easier than it should have been.

I wish they would invest for "Horizon: Revenge of Nemesis" for once in talented level and boss designer instead of spending budged on story writer, which portray men as inherently evil, but hey everyone has their own priorities.

If you listen to her voicelines between the main missions you can hear her talking about don`t knowing what these feelings are. I feel like in the games before she didn`t met the one person she felt something for. She simply had`t any contact with people for her hole life and don`t know what feelings are.
To sum it up I can`t understand the hate about the DLC and liked it really much.

As for the kiss.. get over it don't care, it's a fictional character and you don't even have to do it if you choose not to.

Also.. Any mention of Xbox/Xbox games immediately should be omitted from salty fanboys who still have no games to play so they spend all their time raging here on Metacritic.

**P.S. people who compliment everything about games but don't like a single little plot choice and automatically rate games a 0 for it seriously need to learn to be less subjective and more objective.. like wtf there are a whole lot more numbers on the rating scale than 0 and 10**

Anyways.. The "outrage" here is over a **Completely Optional** moment in the game where the MC has a **Choice** regarding a particular relationship moving in a new direction. **Choice =/= Force**. There is no "Woke" agenda.. in this game's world the people simply didn't grow up in societies with any indoctrination against same-sex coupling like those from religions from our current world which no longer exist. **So it's understandable** that people can be who they are and not be concerned with gender in their relationships.. and all without any morons getting upset over it, wow.

These people need to shut up, stop bandwagoning and actually play the damn game to form their own opinions. So what if the MC is possibly queer, there is no telling if there will be other relationship choices in future installments to these series that. Lol... if they're really so upset over this they better go review bomb popular games/series like: Mass Effect, Fallout, Dragon Age, Assassins Creed, and Cyberpunk to name a few.

damn it was hard to avoid throwing insults here.. anyways review time.

Review: short and sweet (DLC and review)
This DLC only loses points for me by being a bit too short and not having enough new enemies/characters/quests.. Other than that I noticed no performance issues and the new areas are visually stunning. RIP Lance Reddick

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Burning Shores is absolutely gorgeous. I feel it’s pushed further than even what Forbidden West was. The writing is incredible.

The addition of a constant ally with fun banter between her and Aloy is a wonderful touch. Their voice actors and the cinematic team did absolutely amazing work on showing subtle emotions of the tense atmosphere between them at certain points as well as Aloy’s internal emotional struggle.

A non-hetero and non-white relationship option is very progressive and thank you Guerrilla for that. It takes guts to do that in the current world we live in.

The final boss was absolutely epic and a wonderful way to end the DLC’s story with. It’s been a long time since I wanted to progress through a main story due to wanting to know what comes next. Usually I just get distracted with side quests.

Definitely my favorite post game DLC content ever.

The developers could come up with and show so many interesting and leading to the continuation, but they did... this. I should warn you that I'm only talking about the main story quests. Let's start with the good. The battle with Horus in the final is tense and dynamic, the gameplay is divided into several sections, each of which is a separate arena. The nature and music is amazing. You can swin on new machine and fly high as you can. Very beautilul clouds. Remember the most interesting story of Frozen Wilds, where Aloy visited the Banuk tribe and found out mysterious secrets together with the locals? So forget it. And it's not even about deceived expectations. The second part, in principle, became simpler and more mundane and less focused on the details of Laura, although there were also enough of them, and I liked the progression of the main character on the way to the team. In Burning Shores, it's about the lack of sense in this add-on as a whole. It can even be described in a few lines: One Zenith survived and fled to Hollywood to fix his spaceship there and fly to another planet. The launch of the ship will cause pollution of these lands, so Aloy and Seyka (one of the Quen) try to stop him. Zenith activates Horus, but still loses. THAT'S ALL. I am not kidding. No clues to the future, no hint of the position of Hephaestus, no reasoning about the nature of Nemesis, no at least somewhat ambiguous antagonist (which was the same Faro), no clear trail that would help stop Nemesis, just a dull wandering around the islands back and forth. And it's poor written. The all situations feels like a bad rom-com. There is a siluation when our characters trying to sneak to enemy base and saying to the guards: "HEY WE MET YOUR FRIEND AND HE TOLD US WE CAN PASS!" Yeah that's bad. It is very noticeable that the screenwriter has changed and he absolutely does not know how to write at least some interesting story. In the main task of the add-on, the hand of the "brilliant" screenwriter is generally seen everywhere in the form of the thought "I live as I want, the team is not a decree for me." No depth and interestingness of the characters, just a direct hacking of the phrase from the screen: BOSSES ARE BAD, LET'S REBEL! This is very much out of the tone of the narrative of both games, and the decrease in the quality of the script is noticeable to the naked eye. Oh yes, there is also a love line that was forcibly inserted or what the authors allegedly tried to show us, which is perhaps the biggest pain for me. Why? Because Seyka is boring and uninteresting character but typical interaction between her and Aloy somehow born the "attraction". You know after literally the SAME situation in Ikrie or Talanah arc which you can describe the same words: brave woman warrior and almost match for Aloy lost part of the family and now trying to safe them or memory of them in battle + she doesn't accept any authority. But they decided like this was never happened and Seyka in this situation somehow love interest right now? That's why I don't believe in this story. It comes from literally NOTHING.I love this universe so much and don't mind gay characters whom i met in Horizon games. But if they wanted a romance line i prefer to choose between man, woman or no romantic interest at all for protagonist. But here they just forced one bad line. It is especially hard to believe when Aloy tells Seyka that she has become an example for her in everything. And I sit at this moment and think: why? No, seriously, when? The only thing that Seyka remembers is the incessant comments admiring every action of Aloy like "There you go! Or whining about how everyone around are bad. Or yelling and running away. Nothing more. Therefore, the scene when Aloy holds out her hand to Seyka and says that she cares about this fool feels strained, if not mocking. In Aloy's friendship with Erend or Kotallo, there is more dynamics and real care, not to mention the relationship with Beta. Previously, everyone could decide for himself with whom he wanted or did not want to see Aloy, and her disinterest in romantic relationships only gave a peculiar character to the character. Not to mention, during the creation of Zero Dawn, the developers said: "Aloy is a woman on a mission and she has no time to think about such things." Obviously, the producer's hand gave a sign to correct this situation at the time of the crisis and earn easy money on cheap hype. The players themselves want to choose, because there are quite a lot of attractive and charming men and women in the world of Horizon. But they just screwed all fans and made a only chose. A bad one. Only a bitter resentment that another character with a gradual development beloved by the fans of the game was sharply sacrificed to the social agenda is not acceptable I would never support it and would never accept these kind,,, Expand

A slight spoiler alert in that if you a cult following then you don’t need to brainwash people, it’s like they’ve created another Zenith character and tried to him worse than the the Zeniths in Zero Dawn and it failed.

Then there’s the problem with Aloy and how the character has changed, she has become more churlish and dismissive of people she can’t be bothered with which is a stark contrast to the previous games, so already the DLC starts to feel off, the. there’s the little remarks about being a snug fit and awkward stares and pauses to push the story into a love interest which again is not in previous games.

I’m sitting there watching this train wreck of story writing slowly unfold, all the while thinking why would they make this into essentially a slow burning love story? I don’t want that and as a consumer I don’t have to like it, had I known or waited for the user reviews I would not of purchased this day one.

There is no such thing as a review bomb, consumers don’t like the product you’re selling and don’t like or even want it, that’s not a phobia or anything, it’s called a choice. I purchased the first two game and both DLC’s Frozen Wilds and Burning Shores however I won’t be buying Horizon 3 if it’s going down the path of identity politics then as a consumer I don’t have to spend my money on it, it’s that simple, but where I inadvertently did it’s gets a low rating because that is not the product I want.

If I paid for a steak and get pork chops I would be upset, Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores is pork chops and I want a refund.

    Do not buy.
Yoy are paying for 3 and 1/2 hour experience.
Not worth what they are asking for.

Poor dialogues, boring story, no change in weapons or the gameplay, Unfortunately I was excited about this game but thanks to Sony and Gorilla for making the game so boring

If I get new content, I am happy! Just finished HFW in ultra hard before I went to LA – this game and franchise is amazing! I like the new character Sayka, and the storyline itself. I expected something like Blood and Wine from the Witcher 3, that was an expansion I wanted to see, this is still the best ever made. This I wanted from HFW Burning Shores :/ too bad that we didn`t get it. That was really a bummer. So what now? Will there be another one? Or do we go to part 3 directly, but then we have to wait again so long :/ just 6-8hrs is just not long enough. Sure graphics, animations, sound, dialogs and the combat system is awesome!!! Finally some new weapons as well! But I cannot give a full 10 for it this time. Expand

Burning Shores is not an amazing DLC but for the amount charged it is worth it. At the end of the story the player has the option to choose whether or not Aloy is a lesbian.

I usually don't like dlcs but this is one of the best DLC that I had ever played, visually is probably one of the best games this gen will get, the new mechanics are fun to play and the burning shores are a good place to explore. For $20 it really is worth it.

It's really awful how people are rating this game 1-2 because there is a gay couple, hiding their transphobia with the excuse of "I dont want to be indoctrinated", like if anyone care about you or they do this because they want to force something(?), but they know it's just an excuse and they just hate gay people. Honestly, Metacritic should deletr Users' vote, people don't know how to use their rights and prefer to gurt others for their own pleasure and horrible ideas. Expand

I can’t recall the last time I’ve rated something a 10/10. Having just finished a second playthrough of Horizon Forbidden West, I can confidently say that it is one of the best games on the market, both visually and technically. The story didn’t tug at my emotions the way that the first game’s did, but it’s still a worthy addition to Aloy’s journey. What more can we ask of a DLC? Although the story was kinda mediocre, it was still good, and the final boss fight was mindblowingly epic! Traversal with the Waterwing mount is a real blast too. It completely exceeded my expectations. The way it seamlessly cleaves in and out of sky & water is incredibly satisfying. For fans of the series, you are going to love this DLC. It’s baffling that people would review bomb such a great game over something as trivial as a character’s sexuality. Expand

Duración adecuada y mejora notable visualmente, un buen seguimiento de la historia principal, de las malas puntuaciones está demás el decir porque.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is visually the best game I have ever played, and in terms of gameplay, it is enjoyable for me, although it may not be for everyone. But the story is the biggest weakness of the game, and I don’t think the story will be great in Someone’s opinion and it may just be the difference between those who say it’s mid and those who say it’s bad. But in different ways, this game completely shows off the power of the 9th generation console.

Burning Shores is definitely worth a visit. The story builds nicely, the side quests have nice depth, and Aloy and Seyka may end up forming something more than just a friendship. The question is whether a little more content could have been added. After all, it's all stuff we've seen before. [Issue#327]

Seyka is a welcome addition to Aloy’s allies. However the DLC shows no intention of escaping the science fantasy nonsense the base game mired itself in. [Issue#28, p.88]
