    - The antagonist was groan-worthy at best.
    - New valor surges and a lot of the added skills are pretty meh.
    - The hyped up added Zenith weapon is really weak compared to upgraded legendary weapons.
    - Too many collections padding out the playtime, not enough world building side quests.
    - Very little about Los Angeles really stood out.
    - No Tallneck for the region.
    - The Waterwing was pointless. Its functionality was needed for ONE quest, after that it was just a gimmick.
    - The skiff and the geysers were neat additions but pointless since we could fly over everything.
    - The DLC added a lot of graphical issues: Texture and shadow pop-in, texture glitches, lighting oddities.
    - Most of the music was recycled from the base game.
    - Erend, Zo, Alva, and Kotello were removed from their post-game locations and replaced with text "notes".
    - The relationship angle was hurried and felt forced. I don't care about the lesbian angle at all, but after two games of brushing off romantic interests, Aloy develops romantic feelings for someone she just meets and spends a couple days with? Simply because she reminds her of herself? It's bad writing, that's my problem with it.

Overall, felt it was step below the base game and a major step below The Frozen Wilds DLC for original Horizon Zero Dawn. Unlikely I'll ever play this again as I've already exhausted everything there is to see and do.

That was great, but the lack of implication in the story is a little disappointing...
Also there's just barely side content, and 5 missions to finish it.
It still took me 10 hours, can't say it wasn't worth it, but I felt like it's just a REALLY SMALL addition to the game, not enough to go back to it once it's done...

Overall it's fun. More of Forbidden West is a good thing. The visuals are stunning and love the new location. I really wished there were more sidequests put into this DLC and really did not like the story. The "men bad, women great" story has been done to death. also the forced romance with a character that isn't really likeable was sad to see.

Burning Shores is a graphically beautiful adventure that doesn't have as much impact as the main story, but does deepen the character of Aloy. It is not a must play unfortunately since the story does not add anything to the main events.

Pros: - Graphics - Enemy design Cons: - Difficulty settings in the main game were more balanced - There is a big choice for Aloy at the end of this DLC.

+ Core mechanics are still super fun to play. Especially that we can use our flying machine almost from the start.
    + Truly epic final boss...

    Cons
    – ... that is too epic for this short side quest. Seriously, it is more of an epic boss fight than the finale of the main game.
    – The new region feels empty. Nothing is drawing to explore it beyond our curiosity (and need for 100%). No rumors, very little side quests. If you want more content from this DLC, you need to find it.
    – The story is weak. It feels like this time is more about "shy Aloy trying to ask Seyka for a date" than about defeating the antagonist. And the romance is not well done. It is cringy. The antagonist is also not much of a threat (he just kidnaps few people) until the end when everything blows to a major boss fight out of a blue.
    – The DLC is short. Expect around 10 hours to 100% it.

Overall, I don't recommend this DLC. The main game is enough this time.

Not bad but not really good either. Beautiful, spectacular, not particularly interesting. I don't care about the protagonist's gender identity, but according to them she won't have children in the sequels ... that's it.

The relationship agenda was pretty forced, the brimshine collecting with free-roam annoying, the only real reason it's getting 5 is because of that awesome arm cannon.

I don't come here to make an extremely negative review of the Burning Shores expansion, I really liked the dlc, but I need to express my opinion about something.

I thought it was really cool that Aloy awakened the need for a company, a love, in the game's story. I always hoped to see that in the character one day, Aloy deserves it. But the way the relationship came about in this dlc wasn't well received by everyone and it broke the public's imagination, that is, it ended the expectations that many players expected to see in the character, even though the game offered the two options of 'no' for Seyka.

A game has a story that captivates us, characters we admire and, in consequence, we imagine and hope to see a destiny for them. Then suddenly someone drastically changes the character build in the story and break our expectation.
If the game developers already want, in the story, to awaken Aloy's affective side and building a relationship for her, why MUST the relationship be homoaffective? Why didn't Guerrilla gradually build this up in a way that also had the option of an future Aloy relationship with a male character (Erend, Avad or another character) throughout the entire story since the base game?
Because the way it was done in this dlc, it was too fast and forced, it sounds like exalting and privileging only one side, only one group, pleasing only a few people.

I don't mean to sound prejudiced, I value respect and equality for all, but it would be good the Guerrilla from now on to develop in the game's story, about the affective aspect of Aloy, a well-constructed system of choices in the next game Horizon 3, make the game a real RPG, where players can choose the course the characters will follow and the final destination of each one in the story. In this way, I think everyone will be satisfied.

I give a score of 7 for Burning Shores due to of this fast and forced change that they did in Aloy, without a proper and gradual build since Horizon Forbidden West, or even Horizon Zero Dawn.Otherwise, I would give it a 10.
Despite the absence of some elements, such as a quest with a Tallneck to reveal the map and more side quests (the Frozen Wilds expansion was much better in this regard), it is an excellent expansion, with an improved and more beautiful graphic compared to the base game, beautiful facial expressions of the two main characters, combat with new machines (it would be even better if there were more new machines) and an interesting plot that reveals a possible solution to combat the great threat that is coming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Guerilla has made another AMAZING game experience and continued to expand the story in a natural and fantastic way. I love that there was a loose end to tie up after the game and that we got to see more of the new comers, the Quen. I rather enjoyed Seyka. She was a great addition that really challenges and fits with Aloy. I’ve seen a lot of people upset over the ending, which is sad. It’s optional on how you play it, but it alludes to Aloy and Seyka becoming an item. Guerilla has had major attacks over this, which is unfortunate. Human connection is human connection and considering her “mother” had a same sex relationship, it’s surprising so many people are upset. Regardless, I found the story to be an exciting and great one. I can’t wait for the next game! The combat and gameplay are flawless and provide a great challenge, yet it isn’t so hard that you can’t enjoy it. The new machines are pretty awesome and I found the creativity behind them great. I loved the addition of the Waterwing! Being able to have a mount in the air and in the water was wicked! The graphics, the gameplay, and the storylines are absolutely fabulous and I will always buy, play and support the Horizon series and Guerilla Games! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story was ok, and the new weapons and areas were nice, but I think Seyka was really annoying. I like Aloy because she doesn't try to show off. I always had the feeling that Seyka was trying to prove something. Overall the dlc was good, but the LGBT-agenda doesn't have to be rubbed into everyone's face. It's a video game, not politics. I still really like Aloy, no matter her sexuality, but I think they took the queer relationship more seriously than the actual story. I've always seen Aloy as someone who doesn't really care about romantic relationships, so it felt kinda forced. The main story was definitely worse than the base game, but the cool environment made up for it. I would say that the dlc is worth the 20 bucks if the LGBTQ-stuff doesn't bother you. Expand

I would give it higher score, but then I remember that Horizon is very much about the story and the story here is boring and the romance is forced. I am old enough to remember when we complained that romances in Baldur's Gate 2 were too basic, the romance in this game reads like a poorly written visual novel a horny teenager concocted with the help of ChatGPT. The story itself is a skeleton of ideas rather than a polished narrative, it fails to deliver a fleshed out antagonist too.

Burning Shores should have been part of the next game and given the proper amount of content and polish. It's way too short for what it's trying to achieve.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, before I say anything here, let me make something very clear: Anything I say in this review is based off of my own personal experiences and opinions with this particular game/DLC and/or the Horizon franchise as a whole. When I dislike something, that does not give one a valid reason to take it to the "extremes", regardless of their take on the matter. Everyone has different preferences, backgrounds and motives, and it is wrong to assume exactly what they are based on just one or two reviews, specific or not. That's all.

With that out the way, here's my review. I divided it into a list of things I liked/disliked/am not sure about.

    Things I liked:
There are a lot of aspects I enjoyed in this DLC. For instance, the Zenith arm cannon. It's like a quicker version of the Boltblaster - albeit not as powerful - but with a powerful railgun mode you can get after upgrading it! I think this was by far a nice addition. I also really enjoyed the new machines, those being the Bilegut, Stingspawn, and of course, the Waterwing. The Stingspawn were my favorite because they are small, cool, and remind me of some futuristic sentry drones.
The clouds were also an awesome addition; I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I would stare at their bare realism and vibrance, which is especially shown when the sun sets.
The much-anticipated Horus battle was something of its own. It was lots of fun while it lasted, and was a truly rewarding defeat. I hope to see more in the next sequel.
I thought Londra was a fairly good villain. Sure, he's a nutcase, but so was Faro and the Eclipse guys from the first game.

But you know what I loved the most? Gildun!!! He was by far the best character introduced in Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds DLC - which was great by the way - and I enjoyed every second of him. Although the encounter was quite short compared to the first one, from what I can remember.
I also think the Horus resting behind the Hollywood sign was a hilarious detail. After all, it's basically robo-Godzilla, is it not?

    Things I'm not sure about:
The new additions to the skill tree were fine to say the least, though I will admit I'm not too crazy about that stuff. I'm not sure if I've even used them yet. I just wanna get the 100% trophy, y'know?
The map was okay, but too much of it is submerged underwater; however, unlike Las Vegas in the base game, there isn't a ton of awesome stuff to find down there. Not that I go underwater a lot. As for the size, I would say that while it is significantly smaller than the main map, Frozen Wilds' map was also quite small, roughly the same size as this one.
Most of the characters I met throughout the DLC are fine, but I don't remember the names of half of them; of course, that's a given for some NPCs in an open-world game. As far as Seyka goes, well, I guess she's ok as well, but not as memorable as any of the other main characters we've met like Zo, Kotallo, Erend and Beta. I also have some sour feelings for Seyka, not so much for her connection with Aloy, but just her character and personality in general.
Of course, no character is as memorable as Gildun, who's the best by a long shot.
The DLC itself was rather lackluster for what it sells for, but is still somewhat worth playing nevertheless.

    Things I dislike:
Ooooh boy, I just can't wait for the heat to kick in. That's right everybody, this is where I dislike stuff. Nasty, right? Let's go!
First off is the bugs. Why do they have so many legs? Why do they cause glitches and problems? I mean, the Waterwing's diving mechanic is cool, but it is oftentimes painful to use because I keep getting stuck whenever I go anywhere near underwater ground, even when I'm not even touching it. It's also the most underused mechanic by far, only being utilized in like one short quest in which the bug really causes problems. There are probably more bugs that I forgot about though, so I guess that's good?
Next up is duration and scarcity. And I don't just mean with the DLC itself, but with all the side quests and machines and stuff. Not only are we visiting the same general areas for most of the quests, but they are also very short-lived and did not really introduce much of value. To say the least, the map is not very abundant with fun and worthwhile stuff, and this definitely does not complement the technical wonders it has to offer. If anything, it felt more like a tiny dish served to you at an expensive restaurant... so to speak.
And now for the thing that's been kicking up dirt: Why the heck is Aloy lesbian?!1? I'm just as disgruntled as you are... or not. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of other was to do it, but as quite a few of the "sensitive snowflakes" have said, it felt forced and rushed. This is why character development is important! Of course, it is just one dialogue. But I care for the character I am playing as much as I do fighting robot dinosaurs!

Overall, I think the DLC is fine, but could have offered more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last night, credits rolled on Burning Shores. It didn't save Forbidden West for me. Though the Horus fight was something special!

I have a lot of feelings, thoughts, and opinions. And in the current climate, most of those feelings, thoughts, and opinions cannot be voiced for fear of being called a bigot.

Anyway, long story short: I went into Burning Shores already knowing about the "optional" scene with Seyka. While I had my misgivings about what the true intentions of Guerilla might have been, I went into the story with an open mind. I wanted to see how Aloy and Seyka's "relationship" matured. If, at the end of the game it felt right, I'd choose "heart."

    It didn't feel right.

Burning Shores is much, much shorter than Frozen Wilds. There just wasn't enough time for a "relationship" to blossom. It felt rushed. It felt shoe-horned in. Dare I say, it felt contrived.

I'll leave you with this one other tidbit. There have only been two "romance" options in the Horizon franchise. Only two. One with King Avad, and now one with Seyka.

If you choose "heart" with Seyka, you see two women kiss. If you choose "heart" with Avad... Nothing happens. You don't see a man and a woman kiss.

    Why?

    I think that's a very valid question.

For now, Horizon Forbidden West remains a 6/10 for me. Burning Shores was not the salvation I'd hoped for.

I'll eventually obtain the last few trophies from Burning Shores (I'm not in any rush to do so), and then - likely - will not return to Forbidden West for a long, long time.

    If ever.

I always regard DLCs as testing grounds for new game mechanics and Burning Shores doesnt disappoint when you get into testing out all the new ways you can use your surroundings in battle, the new skill surges, new weapons its amazing and you can get lost in immersive battle.... however HZD is at its heart a story driven game, quests, lore, narrative and i feel like all of that has been put on the back burning in favour of game mechanics WHICH I GET. because if you focus on that you cant deny the game is awesome, even the new flying machine the seamlessnwas you can dive in and out of water is so much fun (though some under water battling mechanics really need to be worked on which i think the ps5 should be able to handle). And you can see the excitement and passion of the teams behind it all. but without it youve got a very short game with not much else. which really lets it down.

if you forget about the last year waiting and play the dlc as if it were an after game mini quest then it works and provides a cliffhanger type thing that fleshes out Forbidden West but because its so short you just cant view it the same way as frozen wilds which iv played again is alot more chunky. the relationship between aloy and seyka i get it but its missing depth, forbidden west was aloy starting off in isolation just like sobeck until varl gets through to her and then erand and then everyone after her relationship with beta saw her claiming her as her sister and even her views on sylens going from wanting to murder him for betrayal to working on breaking his isolation like shes done with herself as she now sees "it takes a village" so yeah heading off on a side quest and suddenly crashing into a new area and this person out of nowhere who can handle themselves in battle just as well would take the wind out of aloy which i guess is what they tried to do, it just felt a bit weak and a bit forced. iv personally been here for aloy being asexual i dont understand why a female protagonist ALWAYS has to be attached. the relationships formed with all the other characters have so much more to them. Seykas story arch just seem a bit rehashed from previous characters weve already engaged with. If your going to start adding in relationship arcs then your looking at heading down the same road as witcher and assassins creed (odyssey) and having multiple choice with multiple outcomes... which doesnt sit well because the games never been about that.

writers whats going on? but the main bugbear is the lack of anything todo. HZD is just expected to have quests, side quests, stumbling upon random things as well as non quests, lore, characters theyve all been so rich but that has all gotten a side step in favour for focusing on gaming mechanics, which I get, i was just a little disappointed for the other stuff.

So in general the DLC is amazing to play as long you play directly after finishing Forbidden West as an extended scene/cut scene. its almost like a pre DLC.... SO BRING OUT MORE DLCS BEFORE THE BIG FINALE! for the developers and teams please more quests, more depth. Dont start going down a road of style over substance please please PLEASE! i get your excited about the capabilities the PS5 can bring but dont loose sight of the games core, the stories and lore that make HZD what it is

***** and for everyone else still bemoaning the fact its not out for PS4 the PS4 is 10years old, its old tech, trying to play this game on it would be like asking for HZD to be released for the oringal PS just get over it, tech moves forward, unless your agaisnt us having holodecks in the future sushup and stop downgrading an amazing game just because you cant afford to playit its unfair yes allround but its shocking todo that to the developers and teams of people that pour so much into these games. Game development and game mechanics need more powerful consoles end of, its non argument.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It still plays like Forbidden West for better or worse.

    Pros:

    - Fighting against the new mechanized creatures is still spectacular and a lot of fun.

    - The overworld looks fantastic again, in my mind even better than in Forbidden West, because they thankfully reduced the amount of atmospheric fog and haze in the sky so that you actually can see objects in the distance now, which gives the world a much clearer look.

    - It's also pretty fun to cruise around with your new boat between all of those small islands, with every island almost being its own micro biome, with different enemy types and architecture on it.

    Cons:

    - There are only 2 new creatures and you can easily play through the expansion in 6 hours.

    - Climbing and parkour still feel very glitchy and inconsistent.

    - The paraglider still does not feel floaty enough.

    - Riding the robots still feels very clunky.

    - More aquatic robots to ride underwater would have been nice, because diving with Aloy feels really slow and tedious, but then again there is not much underwater exploration anyway.

    - The grappling hook still feels awkward to use. It's basically just a glorified teleporter. Being able to swing freely, even if only on specific points, would have been way more fun.

    - NPC characters still constantly annoy you by nonstop running around with you and voice line spamming you about every detail. They toned it down maybe a little bit, but it's still very noticeable.

    - Melee Combat still doesn't feel quite right, with really long drawn out melee animations, where Aloy spins for seconds around her own body axe before finally attacking.

    - And the level and dungeon design is still in a spectrum between mediocre and dissapointing. All of the areas look fantastic, but gameplaywise they are just Ubisoft open world game design, which simply can't compete with better designed bosses, dungeons and areas of games like Dark Souls, Eldenring, Sekiro or Breath of the Wild.

    - Also, almost all of the (caucasian) males in this expansion and in FW are being portrait as stupid, incompetent, narcissistic and/or villainous (Londra, Zeth, Rheng, Ted Faro, Gerard Bieri, Erik Visser, CEO ), while all of the female (minority) characters are portrait as wise and resourceful leaders. So basically just like in any of the Hollywood movies of the last 10 years, which is kind of meta, because Burning Shores plays in Hollywood locationwise.

And even if you like woke content, the story in Burning Shores is still not very good.
Its one of those typical "dlc-storylines" which add absolutely nothing of importance or interest to the lore. Personally I have nothing against the new character "Seyka" being lesbian, but the character is simply not well written. Fifty percent of the time she is whining and complaining and the other fifty percent she is literally worshiping Aloy. And none of both is very interesting to watch. The dialogue between both is also something which you would expect from a fanfiction project, but nothing you would expect from a hired writer, qualitywise. The fight against the giant mech is low key kind of cool tho, even if it was way easier than it should have been.

I wish they would invest for "Horizon: Revenge of Nemesis" for once in talented level and boss designer instead of spending budged on story writer, which portray men as inherently evil, but hey everyone has their own priorities.

The quality of the game is excellent, unfortunately it unnecessarily put the LGBT crowd in this dlc and in a forced way, however much the kiss option may be a choice, they wanted to seal it with something that was not needed. I'm a fan of the series, but having trivialized this subject loses a lot of the quality of the game as a whole.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game started off great, the visual looked amazing, the story interesting. But there is not much new here, only one new machine. The story goes kinda dry and there are only 5 main missions and 3 side quest. The missions don't add much to the story and one mission was just boring. I was hoping the final battle would be awesome, a new machine to take on. But the final boss was quite boring, yes it was a machine, a new Horus. But all you did was stop it from over heating, it was just so dumb, not a memorable final boss at all. Kinda lame to be honest, I finish the 8 missions in the game in 8 hours. Not worth the $20 if you ask me.

But I did love Sekya, she was a great character, I would love to play a game as her!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge fan of the Horizon franchise and love it with all my heart. I went through the first game with pleasure and I can already call it my favorite. The second part also pleased me, as there were new machines and mechanics that I liked. When I heard about the release of the DLC, I immediately pre-ordered it, because I was sure that it would meet my expectations, but something went wrong. I do not regret the money spent - the DLC is really very beautiful, the new location looks great, I liked the Waterwing and I am absolutely delighted with Horus (this is one of my favorite robots, which I was really looking forward to). It's hard for me to write this review, because I am sincerely grateful to those people who were responsible for the combat system, graphics, machines, characters and buildings designs. But the script came out incredibly weak with some strange and inappropriate elements. Mind you, I'm not anti-LGBT at all. I even thought that Aloy would look good with Talana or Alva. I really like these heroines and the dynamics of relationships with them. But Seyka is a completely uninteresting ludicrous character with an annoying personality that didn't evoke an ounce of sympathy in me. I didn't like traveling with her and I was glad when the game allowed me to be alone and mind my own business. Their relationship starts so spontaneously and develops so rapidly that you start to feel like you're in a teenage girl's fanfic. It's also important to me that I can be on the same wavelength as the character I'm playing. But Aloy turned out to be too keen on her new girlfriend. At the same time, she seemed to even become even more rude and distant, as if she didn’t care about anything. I was confused by her remarks during the battle with Horus, because, well, guys, this ancient war machine, the very terrible threat that destroyed all life. And Aloy acts like she's got some stupid shrimp in front of her that you can slam with a slipper. And seriously, she actually defeated Horus on her own while Seika kept it distracted. I mean, a human with a bow and a stick was able to disable an armored robot the size of a stadium. The tanks and planes of the past had such huge problems with this, but apparently they did something wrong. I remember how much I was impressed by the old records from Zero Down, where soldiers and civilians talked about the horrors of war against machines, so I expected real fear and experiences from Aloy, because it's normal to be afraid. But it doesn't seem to scare her anymore. And it looks unrealistic. Aloy does not seem to take what is happening seriously, treating it as a boring routine. I would like to see the development of this character, her growth as a person. And if the developers want to give Aloy a love interest, then why not let the players choose who she will be with? I like both the male and female characters of Horizon, I think each of them is better than Seyka, because the latter looks like a personal OC of the screenwriter, who apparently really wants to date Aloy. This looks insanely weird. Plus, I'm really tired of these nasty evil men who oppress strong independent women, especially when they are at the center of the plot. I can't even hate Walter, I don't take him seriously because he's such a ridiculous and comical villain and his motivations are completely absurd. Also, to be honest, I would like Aloy to find a real friend on the Zenith side, because so far they have all been just selfish freaks. I still love Horizon and I'm ready to buy the third part if it comes out, but I also hope that the developers will improve Aloy herself, the plot and the relationships between the characters. This franchise means a lot to me and it's hard for me to give such a low rating, so I'm sorry if that. Expand

Furthermore, the platforming sections are clunky to say the least. In some parts it felt like the climbing mechanics got worse.

If you've already played the base game of Horizon Forbidden West then you'll already know just how good the game is graphically at least, it's not perfect in other areas but it's easily one of the most visually stunning games ever made. This DLC may be pretty much more of the same but given how good the game is that's not a bad thing. Graphically it's managed to even improve over the base game thanks to it being PS5 only, and the result is easily the most impressive looking game to date on any system. It's not particularly long but the map is quite large for a DLC with some of the most stunning locations you'll ever likely to see in a game. A lot of the issues from the first game persist however such as awkward controls while climbing, foliage obscuring vision when exploring our fighting etc, we also get to learn a bit more about a Aloy on a personal level which is bound to split the fanbase. There's a lot of 'strong female leads' in this DLC which seems to be a reoccurring theme with PlayStation at the moment, like many I find this constant 'girl power' theme to be a little bit tedious and I hope PlayStation can level things out future games going forward. On a sudden notes we get to see and to say goodbye to the hugely talented and sadly missed Lance Reddick. I'd say that this is a must play if you are already a fan of the series but it's far from perfect. At the very least it's a glimpse into what the PS5 is capable of, and in that regard the future is very bright indeed. 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, I have mixed views on this expansion as I'm not sure what Geurrialla was trying to do - it's almost like they had to do something to show off the PS5 and this is what they came up with. It could have easily been included in Forbidden West but they chose instead to do it this way. So, if you want more, albeit a bit harder (as most machines you encounter are Apex varieties) then this is the expanison for you.
However, I feel it is necessary to address the "elephant in the room" - namely the ending, as I think people are making too much out of it. Those who have played the Horizon games, then you will be familiar with the way the game handles NPC interaction - it's either a way for the player to gather more information from an NPC ot, as in instance, for the player to have Aloy respond to an NPC in one of three ways - insight, confront or emotional - none of which has any impact on the way the game actually plays out. So, no matter what option you choose at the end of Burning Shores, all it does is change the cut-scene that you see - this is why it's put at the end. IMHO it was put there for one reason only - to see what sort of reaction it generated from the players (it's not like it's the first time - Last of Us Pt 2). In my opinion it doesn't fit and feels somehow forced - a brand new character appears and within a short period of time, Aloy is in love - now even by my standards that's fast :-) and no matter which option you choose, the next installment of the game will ignore it anyway so it's up to Guerrilla how this relationship plays out.

They had, so little time to develop the relationship it felt like they knew that most people can't relate to Aloy or understand her because they made her Into this badass character that had almost no emotion, and the little bit of it we do see in the games always get cut short, so it was like they knew they wanted Aloy to have a partner and have her be a little more relatable and they built up from there with the relationship it would have been better if they tried this in the next horizon so they could have built up the relationship more in-depth and with the rest of the story it felt kinda cliche with the. Oh we killed the enemy but one of them escaped, so we have to go get them other than those aspects of it your average DLC that you’ll have fun with and be able to see the beautiful environments and the amazing recreation of LA that look so much better than the base game which is why I think it was a good decision to have it only be on PS5 you could see the difference between the two, so if you liked Forbidden West you will enjoy Burning Shore’s. Graphics looks outstanding and by saying this you can how much detailed the dlc had hats off to the dev team here good job! Now of course crashes has been frustrating, certain quests just doesn't pop up or can progress on however reloading it fixed the problem but still that's a major issue. Loading times seems more longer than usual well for me I've noticed maybe 5 seconds longer before the dlc. Story, now this is more of a setup to the next game like a preview sort of speak. It was definitely weaker than The Frozen Wilds but it's still enjoyable and fun to explore the wasteland of LA and the lore of the new tribe is also to understand the Burning Shores lore. But the Frozen Wilds is definitely better than The Burning Shores story wise though, I think The Burning Shores is vastly better on gameplay and likeable character named Seyka. I personally can't wait for these two Aloy and Seyka to partner up and fight the next villain in the next game. My overall score is a 7 due technical issues and a weaker story but if patches fix these problems I'll definitely change my score. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start off with some positives because the level of world/character detail and battle mechanic additions were phenomenal. I had a blast changing up my play style to accommodate the new environment and some new machines. Not to mention the final horus fight. The devs really pushed this and it shows so I cannot wait to see how this looks in the next installment.

Now my critique: the story felt like FW but just condensed way down with a villain reskin.

Aloy only just got comfortable hugging people and opening up about Rost — but her dynamic with Seyka felt super rushed because we haven’t had time to bond with her like other characters in Aloy’s story. They always hinted that potential romantic options could be introduced in future games. Most fans don’t care which side of the fence she lands on (if at all) and just want her happy. It’s the fact they jammed this in a DLC instead of letting it continue to naturally build in the next installment with those special moments is what most people are upset about. Something this complex, important, and potentially story influencing should not have been introduced in a DLC.

It was good to see moments where she cared about how Seyka was feeling and wanting to help there as much as completing the mission — as we’d expect in her current character arch. Aloy deserved a better paced moment, at a better time, with a character we didn’t rush to connect with, and when her growth has come more full circle. I had more of an emotional reaction getting reunited with Gildun than the entire DLC story.

And on a sidenote....I'm all for bashing ostentatious woke content, but this ain't it..... not only is pursuing this romantic scene entirely optional for your character, but it's just one tiny little scene at the end. It's not like they're forcing some gross, unskippable sex scene in your face (looking at you TLOU2).

And I’m not saying this DLC is bad, maybe just lacking.

    The great things is:
The scenery is amazing, I love the lava
I love the side question with the person back from frozen wild. And it was so lovely and sad at the end there. I loved it
I loved the fight with the metal devil! It was fantastic!

    The bad stuff is:
First of all seyka.. I have nothing against aloy being BI or gay or whatever! It’s just that this relationship felt forced… I thought she was a fine character and all but I didn’t like it like that we were in love in someone that we barely got to know… just because she is similar to us, doesn’t mean we should love her….
Personally I’m a fan of erond but I’d be find with Alva, so Petra, or anyway we really know better and have more of a relationship with…

There were a few graphic problems but I can brush that off to being a new game and all, I don’t mind too much.
Why did they move kotallo and everyone? Sorta sad…
Im a Little sad there wasn’t as much to do in this game… no tallneck or anything… a little sad..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this with the expectation I’d visit the Burning Shores and fight a Metal Devil, but unfortunately Aloy’s focus malfunctioned during the trip and ended up directing her to the Lesbian Shores instead. By the end of the story it full on turned into the Burning Scissors while I was begging to go back to the Forbidden West and pretend this was all a crazy dream.

Jokes aside, I’ve never really been difficult to impress and I’ve loved Horizon since the beginning so Burning Shores should’ve easily been a 10/10 for me, but my god did Guerrilla drop the ball on this one. My excitement for Horizon 3 is almost completely dead after this pointless CW love story that was shamelessly pushed and forced throughout despite Aloy literally knowing this chick for like 2 days to a week max. I don’t have a problem with Aloy getting a love interest at some point, I’m just bothered that the first one has to be some random added via DLC. Great job Guerrilla, way to crap all over the other companion characters that have actual chemistry and history with Aloy since Zero Dawn. The very characters that fans actually care about only to get shafted just to push the woke agenda with a nobody that doesn’t even have a part in the main story of the base game.

I fail to see what’s so special about Seyka and why she’s equal to Aloy when in reality she’s basically a discount Aloy without any of her charm, super annoying and irritating the entire time to the point I was hoping she’d die at some point in the story. Their “bonding” all boils down to because Seyka fights machines and is an “outcast” among the Quen. Are we just supposed to ignore the fact that most of Aloy’s friends and allies also fight machines and are also “outcasts” to their tribes in some way?

-Talanah was an outcast among the Carja because in the Hunter’s Lodge members have traditionally been male only
-Kotallo is an outcast among the Tenakth because of his disability
-Zo was an outcast among the Utaru because she was against the way the leadership was handling the fact they were all going to starve to death and for trying to do something about it
-Petra was an outcast among the Oseram because in the Claim women aren’t allowed to do much besides get married
-Uthid straight up turned against the Shadow Carja

There’s more than that but I think I’ve made my point. The only things that save this is from being a complete disaster is the interactions at the beginning and end with Sylens (RIP Lance), the Horus fight, and the Gildun side quest. I’m still willing to give Horizon 3 a shot in the future but my expectations have gone way down and I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. Especially if they choose to double down on this woke garbage.

While the DLC adds possibly the best boss fight in the series in my opinion, it is extremely short giving only a few hours of extra gameplay before beating the expansion.

There was also only one actually notable new enemy which is the frog robot. The waterwing is just a sunwing with extra steps as the game itself alludes to as you dont even need to take over a cauldron to override it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t normally write reviews but I love this franchise and I think this is the first time they have missed the mark. A lot of what happens in this DLC confused me. I don’t really get invested in relationships in media, whoever the writers and creators want the main character to end up with is fine with me but this storyline between Aloy and Seyka just felt forced and rushed, I’m not sure why they decided to condense their whole relationship into a DLC.

I feel their storyline would have been better if it played out over an entire full game or even multiple games like Forbidden West and the eventual third game. I feel like Aloy and Seyka being together at the end of the third game would be more believable. I get that Aloy doesn’t have the best social/people skills and feeling that way is new to her and being nervous all the time and fumbling with her words is what the writers were going for but I just couldn’t help but roll my eyes through all of Aloy’s dialogue about Seyka. It sounded weird and cringe. Again everything about their relationship felt forced.

Another big thing that confuses me is the choice to leave Aloy’s decision up to the players. I felt like the whole time they were trying to get the player to lean one way over the other. If that’s what they were doing why leave it up to the player? Why not just make it official? What does this mean going into the third game? Is Seyka going to be a side quest character and you make decisions based on what you chose at the end of the Burning Shores? Will some people have a storyline where Aloy has a girlfriend while some don’t? It seems clear to me the creative team wants Seyka to be a big character moving forward, so again, why leave it up to choice? What about the people who don’t end up playing the DLC? If Seyka is heavily featured in the third game those players are going to be lost when she shows up based on how the main game ends.

I only write this because I am a big fan of the franchise and the decisions the creatives made just really confused me. It felt like a lot to try and squeeze into a DLC. I feel the story would have been better if it was just Far Zenith and the Horus. I don’t know maybe it’s just me but most of the DLC just felt off.

overall even though it is one of the games you should check out if you are a Horizon fans its nowhere near the size of frozen wilds DLC

Yes, the fundy fash, the Conservative moron movement, yes, as soon as I heard this game was “woke” I immediately bought it and then created another account to buy it again just to fund the woke agenda ladies and gentlemen! I base entire facets of my personality around how much I want to make the “others”, the fundamentalist Conservatives angry. The bigoted fascists that are so easily triggered, I love that something being in a video game hurts their feelings and I’m willing to spend my own money on this! Isn’t this review super useful about what the game is actually about and what quality entertainment it represents? I’m so glad we can take the opportunity to share our own opinions about it for the world to see and my opinion is very relevant to the content! Thanks Metacritic! 5 stars by the way! Expand

But i do like the sidequest even though there are only two(which seem a bit too little for me). The only Thing that really bothers me is The fact that we came to the Burning Shores to get information for New weapons and the only time this is mentioned again is at the end where we then just Scan all the Information needed just like that. Have not finished this dlc as of yet but so far loving it. Has some technical flaws as it's pushing the PS5 pretty hard from what I've heard but overall I am injoying it. More of what we love about Horizon and a look into what the future games could hold.

It's okay. More Forbidden West if that's what you're after. New character is kind of underwhelming but at the same time what I would consider the best part of this dlc.

I am a big fan of the series, this one was not so good, but still sort of fun to kill machines. It seems at SIE praising lesbians and hating white men is a required dogma within the approved company DIE cult.

I just do not understand how the game could feel so polished but using the water wing to get past the tower is an hideous experience and makes me regret purchasing the DLC.

it was ok, really beautifull but i was expecting a better bad guy and clever story. The lore and Quens stories is not enouth developped. The final boss fight is really impressif thought, but not enough to make this DLC unforgateble. The Frozen Wild was better.

HZD was my all-time favorite game, and its DLC was really excellent. I was disappointed with HFW because they went for quantity over quality with the weapons, outfits, skill trees, all the crazy keystroke combos to do moves, the valor surges, horse races, and arenas. Jeez!

Burning shores is fun in that you get some new missions to do in the world, but it's mostly just more of the same.

Burning shores is fun in that you get some new missions to do in the world, but it's mostly just more of the same. This time I didn't feel compelled to try to use those crazy moves so I ended up choosing a subset of weapons and blowing the rest off. The quests were not that interesting, there were not enough side quests, and the villain and his big machine were not very special either.

From her first introduction, I thought Seyka was whiny and annoying. It's unrealistic that Aloy would fall for a random, somewhat unpleasant person like her. Not once did I see anything she did that would have attracted Aloy. So that was just another disappointment. Totally fine that she's a woman, but there was almost zero character development.

So, meh on this one. But I'll probably still play a next one, if there is a next one. Why? I guess because I still get some HZD vibes here and there. Maybe they'll improve in the future...

A bit of a let down. The expansion felt very brief compared to Frozen Wilds. There were almost no side quests and Aloy wasn't given a lot of reason to discover the area outside of the main mission. I initially liked that the game takes away your ability to fly at the start. I thought that would give me a reason to explore on foot and use the pretty cool boat you were provided. However,A bit of a let down. The expansion felt very brief compared to Frozen Wilds. I thought that would give me a reason to explore on foot and use the pretty cool boat you were provided. However, access to flight was restored pretty much right away - leaving you with a very easy access to the whole area at once and a way out of every tough situation. Having flight access early on took something away from the game.
The new enemies were mostly annoying. The new Waterwing was very similar to the Sunwing, but with the hit point of a Horus. I did not enjoy fighting a herd of scrawny water chickens for 45 minutes.
The new area was of course very pretty, but it also felt rather empty as the lack of quests just prompted you to fly around and make landing at interesting spots. The shores didn't feel cohesive due to the easy availability of flight.
The main story felt rather tacked on and devoid of nuance. A Zenith got away from Aloy at the conclusion of the Forbidden West. He is a corporate bastard who just wants to destroy things. I was very surprised at the plot being so simplistic. Since there is a great risk of the world being destroyed, couldn't we at least have a discussion about sending an ark off into the starts to preserve a sliver of mankind? Aloy is so determined to destroy the Zenith that she doesn't even stop to think that maybe it isn't such a bad idea to have an ark, in case everything doesn't work out with Nemesis. Just find a better launch site and let the Zenith take some willing followers to the starts? What's the problem, really?
The final boss fight was awesome visually, but fairly clunky in execution.
Most of the new weapons and armors were not very useful. For instance, the new hunter bow provided by the expansion didn't have any basic arrows, so each arrow fired would cost 10 metal shards. If I had gone that route, I would have had to stop to farm for shards. I ended up keeping my hunter bow from the main game.
It was a somewhat fun diversion. A brief revisit with Aloy. But compared to the Frozen Wilds, which felt like a big and well crafted expansion, Burning Shores felt very brief.
I played the expansion on Ultra Hard and found it to not be very challenging.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is visually the best game I have ever played, and in terms of gameplay, it is enjoyable for me, although it may not be for everyone. But the story is the biggest weakness of the game, and I don’t think the story will be great in Someone’s opinion and it may just be the difference between those who say it’s mid and those who say it’s bad. But in different ways, this game completely shows off the power of the 9th generation console.

Burning Shores is definitely worth a visit. The story builds nicely, the side quests have nice depth, and Aloy and Seyka may end up forming something more than just a friendship. The question is whether a little more content could have been added. After all, it's all stuff we've seen before. [Issue#327]

Seyka is a welcome addition to Aloy’s allies. However the DLC shows no intention of escaping the science fantasy nonsense the base game mired itself in. [Issue#28, p.88]
