    Thoughts-
Hogwarts Legacy obviously does not exist in a vacuum, and as much as many might want to, it cannot be separated from the context surrounding its release. But while there’s no right answer when it comes to how you should choose to engage with something that is so intrinsically tied to J.K. Rowling – every person will have to make that decision for themselves – the game itself has a lot to offer, the majority of which is impressive in its execution. Though not without design and story issues of its own, Hogwarts Legacy ultimately comes across as a densely packed and well-made RPG that fans of the Harry Potter universe will find incredibly easy to enjoy.

Had an absolute blast playing the game. The castle and word are extremely detailed and there are loads of things to do. However, some of the side activities got really boring as they got very repetitive after sometime.

I am not even a Potterverse fan, and I am enjoying the title. I can definitely say that after 20 hours in, the game gets better after about 7 hrs and really opens up into a maticulously crafted open world game. I think what sells this game the most is its design. It has a ton of open world tropes we have all seen before, but lacks the blatant over use of copy and pasted assets. Each location and room feel meticulously crafted and makes the whole experience far more enjoyable. The art design is incredible, and one thing you will notice right away is that unlike other open world games, here you can actually enter most buildings and locations you see.

The loot system could be better, and the voice acting, and conversations animations and character models are hit and miss, mostly miss aside from the main characters/instructors.

Now to address the very selective controversy surrounding this game...

It's absolutely appopriate and right to give a statement regarding Rowling and the controversy surrounding this game when discussing it.

However, the issue that is being raised here is just people wanting to bandwagon. If this nonsense regarding WORDS by a bigot hadnt gained hive mind internet momentum no one would be talking about it. Just as those that claim they won't bankroll oppressions continue to do so with literally hundreds if not thousands of purchases they make throughout their lifetime under our current system.

So dont tell me this is your stand, when the minerals and labor in your phone, game console and TV promote slavery war and genocide, when you applaud the newest Fromsoft title in which they dont pay their employees for the forced overtime it took to produce. When you wash your hair or take medication that was first tested on the primates sitting in cages right now as you argue about this one womans words. When you eat your dinner made via mistreatment and the opposite of peace for the lifeforms that sit on that plate. Don't forget the predatory practices of the employer you work for or the advertising you allow on your site in the name of profit to continue feeding the system and pay their life tax on you.

If you are going to pretend like you care about peace for something you had better mean it beyond a 6 month internet hype cycle surrounding this one sad woman's words.

What she said is garbage and ignorant, yes. but seriously? This where you draw the line? a friggin' Potterverse game?! That's it?

I'm not buying it. Don't' tell me somehow this person's interpretation of a community in the form of WORDS is somehow more important than the myriad of actual physical, mental, and emotional destruction that your day-to-day consumption finances. To suggest that buying this game is financing some sort of anti-Trans campaign, is also to suggest that feeding yourself, and your very existence finances warlords, enslavement, global environmental destruction, imperialism, racism, as well as the very thing you criticize this woman for. who merely wrote a few books and thus has a few million social media followers.

Trust me, much more influential and powerful people that actually affect global human trajectory are directly financed by you whether you want to face that or not.

Do something meaningful if you care, because more words and your lack of 'contextual understanding based' one-time 70-dollar boycott of this video game ain't it......

    Now the cons.
While the character developments are great, they lack a interesting conclusion. The same happened with ghost of tsunima. I believe the team focused too much on content that the player would problaby never interact with. Too many locations. The storyline can get diluted by too much unnecessary content. Next game should focus more on less unnecessary content and more character developments and even a more deep storyline overall. 8 out of 10, but not a 10 lol.

Sadly, the game is plagued with an unnessesary/empty open world, an uninteresting story/protagonist with a frankly weird pacing, more than I could count visual/game breaking bugs and glitches. (One had me reload a prior save file because a dungeon would not load properly). Another thing that really annoyed the heck out of me were the same 5-6 lines that were repeated over and over and over again all game long. (You'll get what I'm saying right away if you play the game). Still a great game. If you like Harry Potter/Fantastic beasts, it's an absolute must. Completionists P.S: aaaaa drag, the words "Merlin Trials" will make you want throw up.

The hogwarts setting which I thought would be the main turn off for me is actually quite interesting to play through. Fun gameplay, interesting story, great music, exciting exploration. Only gripe I have is flying mechanics are kinda wonky to get used to.

Absolutely stunning world with an amazing story, although some of the companion questlines don't feel as well fleshed out as others. Combat is fun but controls somewhat clunky. The content outside of the main story was not very entertaining. The gap between beating the final boss and finishing the main quest line was so tiring I almost put the game down before finishing it.

First of all, let me get this out of the way: I stand with Rowling, who has never said anything hateful or transphobic. In fact, she supports trans people. She just doesn't believe the rights and safety of female-born individuals should be taken away in the process of equal rights for trans people. I stand with this.

Second of all, I'm not a fan of the HP universe. It's okay at best.

Second of all, I'm not a fan of the HP universe. It's okay at best. It's not that original or imaginative, and I don't think Rowling is a great writer. In fact, if it wasn't for the hate and backlash aimed at Rowling - who only wants to champion the rights of female-born individuals - I wouldn't have bought this game. So the boycott just straight up failed, sorry. And guess what? Outside of Twitter, like 90% of people all over the world agree with me.

This is the ultimate piece of Harry Potter fanservice, it genuinely feels like it was built from the ground up by genuine fans of the source material.

There are some elements that could definitely use some tweaking, I'd have liked a more classic approach to side quests with more focus on writing and unique objectives. I also feel like "companions" should have been more involved, with more in depth dialogue and relationship building as well as a tag along for less lonely open world exploration (there also should have been more than just the three). I'd have liked more variety in the dialogue options. There are some gameplay elements and limitations that definitely could have been handled better as well but I feel like it's hard to complain when this is the first in what I hope is many more games in a series by a team that has never quite handled a game of this caliber before.

I do hope this team continues thriving and chooses to continue this series in some kind a way, they deserve to be able to prove themselves in the realm of taking feedback into account and improving upon what they did here. I really do think a sequel has the potential to be even better. Hopefully we get a lot more from these guys before things inevitably change at the studio and drain all the passion from it as we've seen so many times before.

It's not a perfect game, but if you are one who's imagination has ever been captured by the world of Harry Potter I doubt you'll really care about it's shortcomings all that much. It lives in the perfect middle of being a vast improvement on any of the existing Harry Potter games and being a surprisingly solid entry in the world of AAA RPGs, and I sincerely hope there's a follow up that not only blows this one out of the water but solidifies the series' place among some classic open world RPGs, I will be very sad if I live in the timeline where this doesn't open the path for something like that.

A beautiful recreation of Hogwarts, down to the last ornate stone design and animated painting. Brought back many childhood memories of being lost in the books, wishing I could experience that world for myself. This game is your best chance to do so. Creating your student is fun, although I wish there were additional customization options. Graphically, the game looks wonderful. Not the most breathtaking thing I’ve seen once you leave Hogwarts, but it’s more than suitable. The castle itself is where the game truly shines. On multiple occasions, I noticed myself slowly walking through the well detailed halls trying to catch every subtle addition. The developers included references and objects I hadn’t remembered in over twenty years, and they clearly dedicated themselves to recreating the atmosphere of Hogwarts. Graphical glitches have been very minimal, I had only one occasion where something really messed up in a cutscene and it pulled me out of the game. Gameplay is solid, I love the easy and quick way you can switch between spell selections. Casting spells is snappy and the feedback is great. Doesn’t feel at all like some weird magical first person shooter, thank goodness. Fast travel is relatively easy, although sometimes you’ve really got to do some running in the countryside to get someplace. I am one of those people who believes there is no 10/10 game, and this game does have some things missing that I would’ve loved to see. There are relationship quests and side quests, but 98% of fellow students are just there to walk around and repeat dialogue. It would’ve been great for more classmate interaction, say inviting somebody to go to Hogsmeade on a whim. Often I’d finish quests hoping to get to play the resulting activity, only for it to not be an option. Find all of a students gobstones and want to play a game? Sadly, not an option. No romance either, which I guess would be a little iffy due to you being 17 in the game, but at least some nights out at Hogsmeade or spending time with someone in a relationship setting would’ve been fun. I’m sure it could’ve been pulled off without being creepy. I have not played all the way through, and I understand they wanted to make the main quest seem urgent, but I was also hoping to have more of a student life. I’d love to attend more classes, and have it say add up to doing well on exams. Dedicating time to study or inviting a friend to study with you. If you spent all your time exploring and completely neglected studying, your grades would slip and your house would lose points. It’s also weird to be able to freely wander around the castle at night, considering students were confined to their dorms and punished if they were caught being out. Missed opportunity for stealth. Again, maybe these will be added later in DLC or I just missed them. But no Quidditch? That’s a sin. No Goblet of Fire or other tournaments? No feasting in the Great Hall with your housemates? Can’t believe those weren’t included. So, final verdict, should you purchase this game? If you know at least a decent amount about this series and want to relive some memories and get those nostalgia feels, absolutely. It’s great getting to be 7 years old again, and stepping away from the not so magical real world. Every game has flaws, and some things are really lacking and missing, but overall you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a shot. Expand

both sides are sort of "review bombing". Just one side is review bombing with glorified reviews, and the other with negative. By no means are most or even half of the reviews doing this, but enough are that it is distracting.
The negative side claims that it is "fanboys" and "right-wing" people praising it.
I am putting a preface on this about the trans rights issue so there is no mistake where I stand on it and show it has nothing to do with my feelings of the game.
I will start by saying I am by no means a Harry Potter fanboy. I was an adult when the books became popular, and read them a few times yes, but I also read a lot of books. I found them enjoyable and creative. I thought it was great that young people were being introduced to the world of reading.
The movies I thought were ridiculous until probably after the last one was released. I am not incredibly into kids movies, or even franchises like Star Wars, and Marvel. (I got into marvel movies very late and stopped being as judgy about them).
So I am coming at this from an RPG fan, and a standard amount of post-adulthood Harry Potter book reader.
I am also a trans rights supporter. I have dated trans women since my early 20s. I am married now, but never had any issue openly dating trans women, and defending them. I also consider myself bisexual. I have trans family members (2 niblings, and a first cousin's child whom I am close to). I find most of what JK said deplorable and ridiculous. I do feel there is room to try to understand trans issues better, and we can question how we react as parents to our child that is saying they are trans. But most of what JK said was unfounded and ridiculous. I wish she did not choose to die on this hill. It mostly shows how willing she is to be stubborn in her ignorance. Sex is real yes. Biological sex is a thing. Gender historically has been primarily based on biological sex, but obviously it has been imperfect since the beginning of documented history. Many cultures have accepted more than 2 genders. It is not the end of the world - and in fact trans people are mostly lovely, reasonable, grounded people. But biological sex is not the only thing JK ranted about. She talked about bathroom r**e which just has nothing to do with trans rights. Among other things. So I understand why people dislike her so greatly now.
My preface is long and actually much longer but I would not have room for the review so I am cutting it there. But I want to make it clear I am not a bigot, anti-trans, right wing, or an HP "fanboy"

The game is fantastic though. Graphics issues yes - sound/voice issues yes - again this is pre-release technically so we can expect a day 1 patch, or perhaps a patch within the first month I am sure to correct most issues.
The combat is amazing. Spells work together better than most RPGs. Flying is amazing. The environments are amazing. The intro was beautiful. The attention to detail will be welcome by book lovers of the series.

Slight spoiler regarding the first 3 minutes of the game:
In the beginning the carriage is taking the characters to Hogwarts and of course flying seemingly by itself. The carriage is attacked and one of the characters plumets to the ground and dies. As soon as he dies, you see the thestral horses appear. I know this sounds like "so what?" but it is quite effective and directed brilliantly.

The tone, and world building is so true to Harry Potter that you could see it as another entry to the films or perhaps a new series of the books. Yes the writing would need some improvements but overall it is quite well done.
Combat is very fun in it. I am at 16 hours in and it just gets more fun. The way the spells work together is leagues above most RPGs. There aren't as many spells as some games, but that is actually a good thing in some ways. It makes it less cumbersome and avoids the overwhelming feeling some people get when building characters. It is advanced enough to please most advanced gamers, and simple enough for basic players to grasp with practice. It is obvious they worked hard on balancing the combat system.
The exploration is well rewarded, and always a blast. The flying in it is quite fun.
Although there is a common gear issue like some games (Ghost Recon-like gear issues) where youre constantly getting new items, but there are also some really good looking gear appearances so you can keep looking the way you want.
The world is quite massive, and the quests are actually fun and interesting. People are claiming its just "fetch" quests but that is not really true. Sure a few fetch quests, but the environment makes up for that. The potential for DLC, expansion, are endless. The game is amazing and well worth your time. Ignore fanboys, review bombers boycotting the game as well, and play it if you enjoy large scale RPGs with good world building.

I appreciate the backlash that JK and her comments have caused, but I don't believe the developers and fans should be denied such a wonderfully qwerky experience. Just play the game for what it is, but that's my opinion and I would never take away from someone else's.

The characters are voiced competently and feel well rounded enough to pass. The performances can feel a little phoned in at times, although some examples shine through. There are moments when it feels like a game, as in collect this, go there, do this, come back. But that is to be expected. Overall it's fun and I have very much enjoyed it.

TLDR; the game is fun and immersive. Can feel gamey at times, but doesn't dampen the experience as the gamey stuff isn't essential. The best way to experience the world of wizarding world.

Very fun game with what I feel are beautiful visuals. Combat is nothing groundbreaking but is still enjoyable. Character visuals are good not great. The cursor in the menus is a bit slow for me. The broom controls seem very touchy although I have not messed with the settings fully so that may be fixable. I was going to give it a bounds point as a HP fan but decided not to.

Graphically, this game hits the nail on the head. Whether you're walking around Hogwarts, visiting Hogsmeade or exploring the British countryside, what you are seeing is very pleasing on the eye, and rather surreal. (NPCs aside, which are very robotic and lifeless outside of the main cast)

Don't expect the depth of Witcher 3 or Skyrim. Think more of a God of War on a Ghost of Tsushima

4.The cutscenes have sloppy transitions, Seemless Transitions would've been so great like in other games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, AC Valhalla, GoW Ragnarok etc.

    1. I haven't finished the game yet to give a full review.
    2. I witness small texture issues/bugs every now and then.

Otherwise, this game has my full attention!

As a casual enjoyer to the Harry Potter series, I appreciate the game is NOT set during Harry Potter's time. With the main character of the world not taking the spotlight, I feel like I can enjoy what the wizarding world has to offer to some not so familiar. The story immediately caught my attention and instigated my curiosity, the combat is fluid and is surprisingly complex, and the world is vast and I am eager to explore.

Big appreciation for how WB handled the field guide. I don't feel weighed down by the number of collectables in-game and many of them I would say are actually really fun to engage with. Like using accio to collect flying books/pages or the moth painting puzzle(which is one of my favorites)

The only thing I can say I'm missing is Quidditch, but I am grateful that the development team was upfront about it not appearing rather than lying to me. Maybe they will make my wish come true with Quidditch DLC! I do hope so.

Now if you are hesitant about getting this game, whether it's because of doubts or the political situation this game is being dragged into, all I have to say is that you should give it a chance. The game has been a wonderful experience for me so far and i have found that this game feels comfortably inclusive, It doesn't feel forced or uncomfortable, and I hope that whoever plays it gets to enjoy it as much as I do.

The thing I'm happies about is the game is complete not even a day one patch to fix a bunch of broken issue. But it is missing some thing that would make it even better. The current flight controls are a little odd it should just be one stick to move, and one to look around. A favorite for the invantory system would also be nice as you have to keep changing it up.

    Cons
    - main story is often less engaging than the side stories with Sebastian, Natty and Poppy
    - the leveling and gearing system makes no sense and feels bad to engage with

To start things off, this game does not break the open world monotony of past years. Don't get me wrong, the world is fun to explore with a ton of things to do, but it does not break off of the Ubisoft open world genre with tons of markers on the map with copy and paste content. If you hate this aspect of modern gaming, this game will do nothing for you.

What it however feels like is a start to a fun new franchise that refreshes the formula. Meaning this game is to old Harry Potter games what God of War 2018 is to the old God of War games. A new take on the franchise that sets up its sequel for greatness with mechanics that should be polished in the future.

One of the mechanics that certainly needs such polishing for the sequel is the gearing and leveling system. The gear you can loot is tied to your level. Level 4 characters have the possibility to loot level 5 gear which is often worse than the level 2 piece you got two hours ago. If you want to loot the max level gear, level 40, you should be at least level 39.

The issue is that this game has a weirdly finite and limited experience meaning that I got level 40 only after finishing all challenges, all side quests and was left with only two main missions after the climax of the game. Neither of these missions features any combat.

So what is the max level gear for? I don't know, to have it, I guess. It's the issue of wanting the gear to do the content, but needing to do the content to get xp to loot the best gear. It is a system that cannibalizes itself.

On top of that, gear levels make little to no difference. The only thing you should care for is wearing the legendary (orange) pieces since they are the only ones that can slot the level three attributes. Attributes are randomly looted from collection chests and they are what the end game is all about.

Between the three levels they have, you can go from doing 900 damage with a Glacius/Diffindo combo to 16k with the level three attributes slotted into your gear. It is these attributes that completely destroy the importance of gear levels. You are much better off wearing a level 30 Legendary gear piece, than level 40 Rare gear piece since the legendary one allows you to slot the max level attributes.

I know this might sound like I hate the game since I spent the past five paragraphs ripping into one of its systems. But it is the opposite for me. It is because of the fact that I like this game so much that it allows me to go into detail on one of its aspects. Being harsh on things I like is proof to me that I spent a lot of time thinking about them. And Hogwarts legacy is a great game to be thinking about and wanting for its sequel to do better. What a fantastic game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is great. I'll admit, it has its flaws - which I'll get into in just a bit - it was a fun 30 hour experience. I haven't technically finished the whole game as of writing this as I'm at the final part of the game in the House Cup and need to reach the level required.

I love the combat in this game. They really did their best to make the game a challenge with what spells to have equipped and how to equip them. The combat flows well from enemy to enemy and even on the easiest difficulty, things still felt like there was a general challenge.

Puzzles are another thing that I want to talk about. I didn't like a lot of them. Many were just common sense and you just had to use your head. But many puzzles I found annoying and confusing. One in the Natsai side quest storyline, I had to flip a box on its side to climb up the side. At the time, I had never had to do this, so it felt weird to have to do. Another was during Rookwood's Trial. There was a part where I had to move a block to climb onto a bridge but I couldn't get the block to move. Eventually I figured it out but it took a lot of time and I still don't think that was how it was intended to be done.

Now for story. While writing reviews for my YouTube channel, I've always been looking for whether a game made me care more about the characters than the story, and this game did just that. I was so invested in finding out what happened with Sebastian and his storyline. You could tell the devs put a lot of time into making sure people cared about Sebastian. Now saying that, I think Natsai got thrown under the bus in this game. Like, an interesting character but there just wasn't enough motive and want to find out more about the character. The story follows your character as they discover their ability to wield an ancient form of magic. You find out others before you used to be able to do this and take their trials to learn to harness this magic and defeat an evil Goblin named Ranrok who has started a revolution against wizardkind for their mistreatment of Goblins. The story is very compelling and quite fun to play through. I really wanted to find out what happened next each time I completed a story quest and I loved it all.

There's a good 30 hours of gameplay but I have well over that. There's a lot of stuff to do after you've completed the game. You can get all the spells, complete all the side quests, find every field guide page, and so much more. I'm still discovering new stuff and I don't plan to set this game aside forever.

I hope this review helped. All in all, if you're looking for a great Harry Potter game experience, BUY THIS GAME! If you're looking for an amazing open world adventure for multiple days of play, BUY THIS GAME! It's amazing and I at least think you should watch someone play it before you buy it, or ask a friend who has it if you can play a save file on their device before you buy it.

    - The story is quite boring and convoluted
    - The hippogriff looks great but flying it is pretty boring as it's quite slow.
    - Some of the voice actors were so cringe. It's like they were pulling characters from the nerds in Canis Canem Edit but with none of the humour or self awareness.
    - The room of requirement was not required very much for me. The animals were an interesting idea but did not feel fleshed out enough. It seems like an awful long winded route to get feathers and other consumable ingredients from them when any other game would just have you pick these up in the wild. It would be different if the animals themselves gave you some form of skill/perk/upgrade/buff rather than a feather or hair to use to upgrade your gear.
-The gear numbers etc meant nothing to me I just kept changing to the highest numbered gear and felt no difference throughout the game.

The story I found myself skipping a lot of cutscenes. As much as I love harry potter, the story didn't cut it for me and found it a bit convoluted. Firstly focusing on goblins and you instantly know who the final boss will be but then it goes off on tangents and you start following another main story and you think oh ok where is this going and then its like they forgot the goblins were there and had to rush then back in at the end. The gameplay is the main draw for me. The combat feels fresh for the first half of the game but doesn't add much else towards the end. The world is well crafted with a lot of interesting places to explore and recognise, many areas are created to look like the films while many others have new original takes on them. I can't say they're an improvement, especially the areas with the classical music playing, I find them pretty annoying because it never ends.

I wish there were more side quests and with hints to lore rather than some of the mundane ones we got.
I wish there was more to do other than the story and side quests. I think quidditch is the obvious answer but of course we are getting a separate game for that so it's like we can't expect an open world Harry Potter game to include quidditch anymore.

I enjoyed the game for the most part and would recommend it especially to any Harry potter fan but there are some drawbacks to the experience.

Very enjoyable game. the climate of the books and movies is definitely here and the combat and all the spells are very fluid and very satisfying. Sadly the story is one of the things that i will forget very soon with expectations of 2 quests. another complain is that this game could be much much more than it is right now. still i recommend to every fan of potter and any magical worlds

The perfect Harry Potter game for fans. Did pretty much everything I hoped it would do.
The world looks great and the combat feels better than I expected.

Hogwarts does seem to have a lack of NPCs on PS5 unfortunately, which makes it feel a bit empty.

+ Good fighting system with depth. It feels good to throw spells around.
    + Some memorable moments.
+ A lot to do in the open world. Side missions, collectibles etc.

    Cons:
    – The main storyline is mediocre. Most of the characters are very one dimensional, there are no twists. The main plot revolves around trials that are there only so that the game can happen.
    – The world is too big. Most of the time, we are not visiting Hogwarts, but rather vast, boring plains outside of it.
    – Collectibles has no reason. Balloons are flying around Hogwarts just so you can fly through it, and nobody has pushed a stone for a hundred years so that you can come, push it and solve a puzzle.
    – The world feels very static and artificial. Filled with dozens of enemies for you to kill.
    – A lot of chore activities: selling tons of gear, brewing potions, taking care of your garden and "rescuing" animals. Takes a lot of time in game.

Overall, pretty good game, but I've played many better implementations of this open world formula. The main selling point is the Harry Potter theme, but it does it very well.

The quest design is hopelessly outdated at the best of times, but at least some of them are presented charmingly. Nothing you do has any consequences, though. Your choices only affect a couple of dialog lines, if that, and the plotlines will play out exactly as scripted. You can even run around using Unforgivable Curses, and no one will give a crap. An RPG this certainly isn't.

The faces are for the most part robot-like, like stroke patients trying to crowbar an expression into their facial play, and don't convey the emotions the mostly good voice cast puts into the game. Distraught NPCs sound the part, but giving them fitting animations seems to have been too much work, and the transitions are actually hilarious: You turn in a quest for a vendor, tell her her brother is dead, the lifeless model looks as bored as always while the voice actress is sobbing her heart out, and then you click on "Let me see your wares", and she replies cheerily. This is early 2000s quality, if that.

Most of the time they try to circumvent talking about the main character in third person, but when they do, it's "they" and "them". Nobody but pink-haired denizens of the Twitter and university microcosms talks like that. Of course text to speech isn't far enough along, so they can't say the name, but the pronouns? Would it have been too much trouble to put some boxes in the character creation (male, female, other) and record a couple of lines three times?

Which brings me to a the biggest immersion breaker by far. You want diversity, fine. I don't mind it when it makes sense in context. But this diversity pride parade breaks the immersion so hard that it gets absolutely ridiculous. In 1890s Scotland you've got transgenders, gays, lesbians, Africans, Indians, Arabs, Persians, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, all with expressly stated nationalities so that everybody feels represented, and nobody's got a problem with anybody, not even with muggles or mudbloods because even fictional racism would've been too traumatizing, I guess. You visit remote, secluded, tiny villages in the Scottish hinterlands where black kids play with Asian kids in the street and where you do your shopping at Bernard Ndiaye, Fatimah Lawang, Jalal Sehmi and Rohan Prakash's stores. Sure, the studio wanted to virtue signal on a Patronus Charm level because they knew they were up against hateful radical ideologues you just can't please and who desperately wanna cancel you no matter what you do, but this harms the sense of time and place so immensely, I can't even begin to tell you.

The same goes for the modern looks, by the way. Why have it play in the 1890s and then make everything look like it's not? Especially in this case, because the Wizarding World is already very turn-of-the-century-ish in modern times. You have to strike a balance between what we find visually appealing nowadays and what tells us which time period we're in. What's most distracting is the countless modern hairstyles. What about hairstyles that convey "1890s, but instead they look more pleasant to 2020s eyes"? No such luck here. Coupled with the ridiculous diversity you really can't tell in which period this game is supposed to be placed – 1890s Scotland it certainly isn't. More like a modern campus in California.

The open world is empty and uneventful. There just isn't much to do, and what's there gets boring and tedious very quickly. The NPCs won't react to you the way they do in certain quests which makes the game feel even more fake. It's pretty, but the game design underneath is a decade or two behind in lots of places.

Enemies: Wizards, goblins, trolls, dark mongrels, dugbogs, spiders, guardians, inferi – and that's it. Come on, Portkey Games, HL isn't Skyrim, and this isn't 2011 anymore.

What HL gets right is the spells, the combat, the exceptional musical score and the atmosphere. The painstaking detail, the wealth of ideas taken directly from the books or invented for the game is staggering. This is the atmosphere of the first four books (or the first two movies), and it's a slam dunk in my opinion. The castle of Hogwarts has been recreated beautifully and faithfully. As if that weren't enough, it's chock-full of secrets you can uncover. There are so incredibly many little ideas in Hogwarts and Hogsmeade that make you chuckle or even laugh out loud and that breathe the spirit of the books so you actually don't know if Rowling came up with them or the developers. This game adaptation gets right what so many don't: It's as if it was made by the same author.

However, the main story is almost meaningless and your friend's quests turn out to be the most interesting and plot-deep things in Hogwarts Legacy than this whole "epic" around ancient magic.

The most annoying thing for me (and I wonder why practically no one mention this), it's how empty our protagonist is. He has absolutely zero backstory. How he got here, where he was before, who he is, etc.

Even Mary Sue Aloy from Horizon has her origins, her upbringing history and still feels like more or less a living person.

On the other side, our protagonist from Hogwarts Legacy is just a dummy, a mannequin for wearing different robes, doing other people's errands and listening to other people's stories.

Most sidequests are forgettable too unless they are involving the other students of Hogwarts. I really love the important side-plotlines you can follow for a long time though.

The combat is fun, but the closer you get to the later stages of the game the lazier you get and honestly it loses a lot its charm very quick. Not enough spells and combos to use, which is why so many people use the "easy" way out by just using overpowered stuff. And I don't blame them.

I originally planned to Platinum this game, but the repetitive dungeons and the massive amount of collectibles, that sometimes just take too much time to get, made me decide against it. Also the gameplay with the fantastic beasts is bland, too time consuming and not worth the effort.

Hogwarts Legacy is a great game for people who want to explore the Wizarding World and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Harry Potter. People who really don't care about that world and its characters should probably not play this since the plot is not good enough to compensate for a lack of love and nostalgia coming from you when you enter this world as a non-fan.

The world beyond the walls of Hogwarts is big. Actually, too big. It is an amazing world to see but not to explore. Perhaps the world is the representation of the problem of this game; there is much, but at the end, much of the same when following the main story.

Fortunately, there is enough variety in the activities outside the story. From taking care of your magical beasts to working out every detail in your room of requirement. Avalanche has really looked closely at what is possible within the world of Hogwarts Legacy.

Still, I was left with a bittersweet feeling. The game does everything it could have done but misses the mark on some essential points. Because of this I lost the fun of playing the game halfway through the story (finished the story after all).

Most of the time you are only presented with two simple dialogue choices: be sorta mean or be super duper sweet and nice. The absence of the possibility to romance other characters was also a disappointment to me. I mean, this is high-school! Lots of missed opportunities there. It's below average RPG but a great Harry Potter game.

The fighting system is sound, and that's about it. There are no real moral choices; there is no role playing in Role Playing game. The plot is not great, the characters are bland, and the voice acting - in most cases - is just straight-up bad.

What makes the game is the setting. Developers managed to re-create Harry Potter's world very well, and the childhood dream of real Hogwarts became true.

Hogwart and Hogsmeade are absolutely wonderful, a masterpieces of building. The atmosphere in the castle is a total success. The gameplay is fun and the flying broom feel right.
All that being said there is a real disappointment, everything else feel so generic, without any soul. I was expecting more of a "Bully" type of game, but didn't really have the school vibe.

Decent game, but have a lot of bugs and feels a bit cardboard like ubisoft games, overrated 100%.
Combat system is decent, story is boring, overall activities like planting seeds and potion craft feels like a mobile game :D, graphics are okay.

the story isn't bad, but it lacks because it feels like they gave up halfway on certain mechanics or story elements and while a lot of people were excited to thinking they would have the choice between being a dark wizard or not the most that comes down to is getting the option to learn the 3 unforgivable curses. and there are no consequences to learning them either in the story or the gameplay.

and this is a minor thing but you can't explore all the house dorms in a single playthrough to enter any of the houses you have to at least play the beginning of the game 4 times to see every House dorm, but the good news is that every House does have a mission exclusive to them kind of its a segment of the main story that takes place early on and is different per house.

to get the platinum it took me about 57 hours with 54 Hours being in the playthrough where I got all the collectibles and the last 3 getting the final 3 trophies that require you to reach a certain stage of the game in every house.

Great game, well made, but boring. Combat feels like something from a Disney game and the RPG elements are weak in comparison to games like Skyrim, Elden Ring etc.

The game beginning makes you skip the train and the banquet ruinning the Harry Potter fantasy and the sorting hat ceremony only ask you one question to sort you in a house resulting in a majority of mismatch especially with non potter fans. The classes are very not captivating and too easy. Finally, the game seem to be obsessed with diversity and inclusion thus resulting in very boring and stereotypical characters like Natsai Onai. Very good game and still fun for those like me that didn't read all the books. Pace is almost laid back at times, which was nice when I didn't want tons of combat. Character moments were passable, although I doubt the story will dazzle too many people. The magic system is the best part (and is definitely better than how you start with the basic attack) and the world looks beautiful and is generally interesting to explore. However, years of open world games have drained me, and I enjoyed this game by only playing the main and select side quests (I don't do the 'points of interest' anymore- I have other things in life that need some of my time) On that note, the PS exclusive side quest was surprisingly extensive. Loot is too bountiful, and the system to upgrade was not for me so I used the same kit for the entire 2nd half of the game. Overall, it's a very well-made game that gets a bit samey if you try everything on the map, but I never felt like I was being smothered in the same amount of open world bloat like many recent games have dumped on me. When it was all over, I actually wish there was more to the school experience at Hogwarts in terms of things to do, but I get that the game felt the need to expand beyond that location to stay fresh. As most people have mentioned, this game is the dream of any Harry Potter fan where you're free to discover the castle and the world with lots of easter eggs and collecticles incentivizing you to explore.
The graphics look amazing and the combat is quite fun, therefore I would recommend this game to Harry Potter fans, this is what you've been dreaming of.
This game is far from perfect

The graphics look amazing and the combat is quite fun, therefore I would recommend this game to Harry Potter fans, this is what you've been dreaming of.

This game is far from perfect however. While the combat is fun, there is a lot of spells that have the exact same function which feels cluttered and using a lot of different spells fast feels quite awkard. While they're fun, you're able to stun any enemy indefinitely. This means that the only way the game introduces difficulty is by making you fight a lot of enemies at the same time. To add to that, there is very few enemies types in this game, making every fight repetitive, including the "boss" fights against strong enemies. Going into hard mode doesn't really fix this, because that just makes the gank fights impossible to play.

Also the characters are completely empty and uninteresting. There's 1 interesting sidequest line that has an open ending and besides that I could not care at all about any other quests or characters. Also there's a lot of little missions in the castle. A lot! And by a lot I mean like 4, but they're all recycled 100 times like it's AC.

Not just the sidequests, but also the main quest is completely uninteresting with uninteresting antagonists.

I don't get why this still happens? CDPR showed the world how to make fun sidquests and Rockstar and Naughty Dog showed the world how to make fun characters. How can a game with this much development time have such uninteresting, boring quests and characters. This stuff could fly in Ubisoft games around the 2010's but it's been a while since then.

TL;DR It's fun to explore the world and mess around if you love Harry Potter, if you don't this is just another generic RPG with trailing missions, okay combat and a super uninteresting plot. Real shame.

Overall I did like Hogwarts Legacy. It is quite impressive what this team was able to do. The castle and world is gorgeous. The attention to detail is great. However despite these things it does good it does have some flaws that I don't see many people talking about. I am a big Harry Potter fan but despite that I wanna be unbiased with the game and critiques on it. The open world is very boring after the initial "Honeymoon" phase. It is essentially a low grade ubisoft open world that consist of "caves/dungeons" that result in walking maybe thirty yards just to find a chest of an item that is under your level and maybe the occasional basic enemy. The merlin trials are pretty skippable once you upgrade your gear slots about two times. As you can just easily go to the vendor and sell all non essential items. The enemy camps have no interesting reason to try to explore as it's just lackluster loot after you fight about fifteen or so enemies. The exploration in the castle isn't even that fun once you realize that 99% of the stuff is just collectible pages and more disappointing loot. It really does take the fun out of it as there is so much more potential to be had. There are the occasional good side quest but I would say the best side quests in this game are equal to the worse side quests of a game like what the Wither 3 has to offer. I did find the dark arts quest pretty cool and just really wish there was more stuff of that level more abundantly in the game. The broom flight is really cool and so are the mounts. Although, the broom upgrades feel like there is no difference at all which is a bummer. The Room of requirement and taming the beast were also pleasantly fun and cool to delve into. However I just don't find the positives of the game to bring it past a mediocre game. Overall it is mediocre but lack of interesting sidequest, boring open world with copy paste activities, basic story, mediocre voice acting, and only a few characters that are actually likeable make it hard to really give it a higher score sadly. I would give it a 6.5 out of ten if we could do decimals in the rating. Not bad but certainly not a 9 out of 10 or even an 8. Expand

Hogwarts Legacy is definitely a beautiful-looking game that doesn't have a groundbreaking story, but does have a beautiful world, a fun combat system, broomstick flying, and of course an incredible amount of side quests and missions. [Issue#325]

It's been a decade since we've had a full Potterverse game, but the wait has been well worth it. Hogwarts Legacy gets just about everything right, with its involving storyline and myriad of main and side quests. Perhaps its finest feature though is Hogwarts itself, providing as much joy in just exploring the halls as performing set tasks. We doubt a single Harry Potter fan will be disappointed. We certainly weren't.
