This game isn't getting "review bombed", it's getting accurate criticism. After the initial drama over the updates and the minor changes we got to the game, there was a brief period of optimism that the game would get better. Unfortunately it hasn't. Is it easier to grind for credits to buy the cars you want now? Yes. But there's still nothing much to do in the game. PD sent out their apology and made a bunch of promises after the initial backlash, but we've heard nothing since. Their last message to the players was that we were getting a bunch of stuff added including "new course layouts" before the end of April, and all we got was a single change to the pits at Spa. They haven't said anything since. So much for the optimism.

The more you try to play this game, the worse it gets. There's only 3 races with decent rewards, so if you want to get the expensive cars you end up on a mindless grind. Defenders of the game will tell you that the new rewards for getting gold on all the circuits will give you a ton of credits, but the cars in the legends dealership are so expensive that if you gold literally everything that's still not enough to buy even 3 of the high end cars, and those rewards can only be earned once. Also, the cars rotate so slowly in the legend dealership that if you can't afford a car it'll be at least 2 months before you ever see it again.

The roulette ticket system is horribly broken (there's plenty of videos about that on YouTube if you want to know more). I've done the daily workout for 50 straight days, and 47 times I got either the lowest money reward possible, a useless part for a car I already own, or an invitation to buy a car I already have. The other 3 times I got a cheap car I already had. Which, of course, I cannot sell because they still haven't added that feature to the game despite the PSN store falsely claiming you can sell stuff in the game since day 1. This wouldn't even matter except ALL engine swaps in the game are locked behind this rigged ticket system. There is NO way in the game to earn engine swaps any other way. What in the world were they even thinking by doing this?

The penalty system for online races makes no sense. You'll get hit by another player and get a penalty while they get nothing. Minor contact gives you a penalty, but a player trying to intentionally ram someone so hard that the game ghosts their car to prevent it gets zero penalty. It makes absolutely no sense and ruins the online experience.

There are a ton of really fast cars in the game, and absolutely zero events to use them in. The most frustrating part of that is that those events are already built into the game and they just wont enable them. PD had Jimmy Fallon playing the game prior to launch and you can see race options for the game prior to release that included Gr1 and high performance point races on Daytona that the paying customers still don't have access to. I guess only celebrities get that content, not paying customers.

The performance point system is horribly broken. You can wildly skew the ratings of any car in the game by making the first couple of gears unusable and doing weird suspension settings. Until they fix this the game will be in a bad state.

In summary, this game was launched as a terrible exercise in how to bleed customers for microtransaction money. While that's been partially fixed, the rest of the game is still in a terrible state. It's unfortunate because under all the terrible design decisions made by PD that are ruining the game, there is actually the bones of a really great racing game with stunning visuals and fun driving. This entire drama is solely the result of the terrible leadership decisions at PD. It can be fixed, and I really hope it will be fixed at some point, but there's no reason to recommend this game to anyone in it's current state, and all my friends who've been asking me if they should get it have been told to wait for future updates. This is a huge disappointment. The people who changed their reviews to 10s after the tiny changes we got make absolutely no sense to me. PD isn't communicating with their costumers AT ALL and no longer deserves the faith people are trying to place in them.

Requires internet connection to even play single player (probably to control their microtransaction currency). Server has been down for over 30 hours, not allowing me to even play my own game on my day off.
Also it is pretty "grindy", hard to earn money, trying to force players into microtransactions

As a fan of the series this is a truly disappointing release. As a fan of the series this is a truly disappointing release. I won't even talk about the current unplayable status due to the downed servers and the always online requirements **** happens, but **** wouldn't be so big if the game didn't require online) but the game has more fundamental problems that for me disqualify it from the legendary Gran Turismo legacy.

First and most important, for me, is the lack of a real career mode. This is what defined a Gran Turismo game for me and the café thing is definitely not a replacement.

Second, it lacks a lot of content. It has less cars, less tracks, and less races. It has no NASCAR and almost no rally. It has no real life karts (it has a ridiculously overpowered kart) or kart tracks.

Third, the microtransaction thing is awful. I don't care about microtransactions in games where they don't affect the flow of the normal game (like in Call of Duty games, for example) but in this game a lot of stuff is clearly designed to make you buy credits with real money, for example:

    - More than half of the cars are more than 100.000 credits and more than 10% are more than a million (WTF?). Some cars are 20 million! By comparison, the most expensive car in Gran Turismo 5 was 500k.
    - The awful "ticket lottery" system where most of the time you get the lowest price (5k, 10k, a random tuning piece which is usually even worth less and for some specific car). I have opened like 20 tickets and not on a single one I got a car or the biggest credit stack. Truly infuriating, specially when you are reminded that you can buy more credits with money after getting the ****ty price.
    - The nerfed payouts in tracks. This is aggravated by the lack of content, meaning you would be grinding the same 2-3 races that pay half-decently to get the cars you want (and as a bonus, it looks like they will nerf the payouts of the few races that pay well). In previous Gran Turismo games there was a grind to get money, of course, but you had a lot of content and variety so it didn't feel so.
    - You can't sell cars. A feature, mind you, they announced the game had.

The game has other problems, inherited from previous Gran Turismo games, but that in 2022 you could expect would have some improvements:

    - The AI is not really and AI but more like trains on a track. They almost never overtake among themselves and if you are in front of them they will totally wreck you. Poliphony has promised a new, better AI will come but it's not there right now.
    - The sound is pretty good for some cars but mostly bad for most of them, with the same old "angry vacuum cleaner" sound. Same for the skidding sound which is the same sound you had in GT1 so many years ago, and always the same sound for all cars and tires.
    - The UI is awful and lacks shortcuts. For example, you can tune your car before a race, you have to go several steps back to the world map, then go to the tuning shop and tune it there.
    - Split creen more has an horrible framerate.
    - Sport mode is basically broken right now.

On the positive side, the game looks beautiful (trough I would have expected more for a 2022 PS5 game, specially the lack raytracing during gameplay smells bad) and the handing of the cars seem to be good (at least the RX8, which is the same car I have in real life, have a very similar handing).

So, in summary, this game doesn't feel like a Gran Turismo numbered game but a lazy work over GT Sport with the cafe thing tacked in and nerfed payouts so you have to buy microtransactions.

What happened? Why did this series go so far in a bad way? It's pathetic and shameful for how they are handling the push for micro-transactions and the predatory feature of ticket invites for limited car purchases. I was trying to defend all this until the servers went down and I couldn't play the game I played for, I can't make a livery, I can't test a tune, I can't do a time trial for fun enjoying the time/weather change progression just because. To top it all off it's even harder now for casual players to make money and buy/customize cars.
Shameful. I've never felt this bitter about something in gaming before.

First review on the site. Been playing GT since GT1 back in 1998. Been playing sim racing games my whole life. I have the highest respect for Polyphony Digital and Kazunori Yamauchi before this, but not anymore. The last 2 weeks, and especially last 24 hours after v1.07 update and extended server outage, have destroyed any trust I have in the series.

    1) This is an AAA game sold at full price, but it is designed like a freemium mobile game with predatory microtransactions. Credits are very hard to come by (e.g. the most expensive car needed 11+ hours of racing to buy before the update). But you can buy credit packs from PSN ($300 AUD for the aforementioned car). Buying parts for tuning cost money. Visual customization cost money. And the latest update has slashed the highest earning race payout in half.

    2) Lootboxes. You get a roulette ticket for completing races, but nothing good ever comes out of it. You get pitiful credits, and never good cars or parts. Again it pushes you towards MTX.

    3) Time limited dealerships. New Car Dealer has "invite system" for the most desirable cars. How to get invited? You guessed it - through random roulette. Used Car Dealer and Legendary Dealer cycle randomly every 24 hours. If you haven't got enough credits to buy a car when it appears, tough luck as MTX is your only option.

    4) Cannot sell cars like in previous games. You can only remove them from garage. Again, this reduces the chance to earn credits.

    5) Engine swaps, one of the most exciting feature, is also locked behind the random roulette.

    6) Bugs and glitches. Numerous issues from release day, some halting progression entirely. Each new update brings its own set of bugs as well. And they prioritized reducing the race payouts instead of fixing them.

    7) Always online. Said to reduce cheating. Sure, but offline play should be exempt from this. Currently the server has been out for 24+ hours with zero explanation or ETA from the developer.

    8) Physics issues. RWD and 4WD road cars have a fatal physics flaw as their rear tyre breaks traction way too easily. Wheel FFB is lacking (they spent all their time optimizing DualShock 5 and forgot about us hardcore simracers). Lots of tuning exploits to game the PP (performance rating) system and imbalances online play.

    9) Lack of cars and tracks. Roughly 300/400 cars and 29/33 tracks are carried over from GT Sport. The new cars are often outdated models. They are bringing classic fictional tracks back, but the layout and atmosphere has been altered significantly. Monthly updates only brings 3 cars each month, and often these are Vision GT concepts that nobody wants, or slight variants of existing models.

    10) Boring career mode. Lack of events - lots of cars have no specific championship (Gr.2, Formula cars). AI is still painfully slow and unaware of your car. Most races are catch the rabbit type events with no actual racing. Updates only add a few races that are over in an hour of gameplay. Not to mention still a distinct lack of high paying races forcing you to grind the same 4 events over and over.

    11) Music Rally. Useless feature. Development time could have been spent adding an improved Course Maker from GT5/6 instead.

    12) GT Cafe. Great idea, but execution is hampered by the lacking car list, poor racing and all the problems above. Also very short and you barely have enough credits to buy all the cars once its done. EDIT: They added new menu books but these are just "buy x cars and get x reward", no actual racing.

Good things: graphics and photomode are still as gorgeous as ever. Wet weather driving is truly dynamic with wind speed, weather radar, drying lines and puddles/aquaplaning. Soundtrack still carries that signature GT feel (although a lot of tracks are also recycled from previous games). But these are features that are to be expected nowadays, and they are greatly outweighed by the negatives above.

Conclusion: lacking in content and racing, poor physics on a wheel, lots of bugs and always online requirement. This is a full priced title but designed like an F2P game to make you cough up even more money if you want to enjoy all of the (already limited) content. The latest update reduced payouts even more, and also breaks the server for 24+ hours so nobody can play. Zero explanations given by developer. Certainly the worst GT game by far (including Prologues and spinoffs like GT PSP), and shows a worrying trend by Polyphony Digital for the future. Kazunori should be ashamed of betraying the trust of so many car lovers worldwide who has supported the series since it's inception.

EDIT: 7 months and several updates later, things are barely better. Grind is still atrocious, still lack of events/cars/tracks, unstable online lobbies, promised feature missing (car selling). Sad to say this game still deserves its 0 score.

Someone calculated that as of right now, buying the entire roster of cars would cost over $3,000 - and you can't even do that, because you need roulette tickets and special events to make certain cars available!

This game is a disaster. There are so many bugs. The game always has to be online in single player so Sony can datamine your interaction. A major patch screwed up dirt races so cars don't have dirt tires, making those events impossible. There are loot boxes in the form of roulette tickets which have been proven by statistical analysis to be rigged for low payouts.

But guess what - the micro transaction store hasn't had a single bug. It's almost like that's where they spend most of their time.

    Buggy, broken, and greedy.

The racing is good, but I completed the story mode in maybe 10 hours and I'm selling my disc. I'm done. The story mode is so bad. You have "friends" in each event who are stock photo images with text. That's it. That's the story. They say generic crap like "I'm racing the Supra today". Oh wow bro. Nobody cares.

There are almost no new cars, because all the content is recycled. Games like Forza have so much more original content, it's ridiculous.

Defenders of this game are likely literal Sony bots. Sony has been caught multiple times buying forum posts, hiring companies to make fake posts of support and manipulating forums. Trust the user score here - there are too many people down voting for Sony to buy their way out of this. Do not purchase GT7, and more important, don't spend a single dollar on their stupid micro transactions.

The realism got pushed so far that it went straight into a parody, with microtransactions taking the center stage, since as the developers have said, they wanted to replicate the real car culture by making the cars so expensive that most people can't afford it.
Some cars costing more than the game itself, and some costing literal hundreds of dollars.
The Devs lean so far into this element that they even keep track of the real world car market, and raise the in game prices to reflect it.
Don't worry though, if a certain real car dropped in price, its game counterpart... Will also raise in price.
At every step the Devs make sure to let us know that the microtransactions are the priority, and the actual game is only a shell to enable it.
As such, in my opinion there's no point in discussing the game itself, no matter how well done (although it has its own share of problems) it's just simply a disgrace.
If you were the Gran Turismo fan back in the day... My condolences.

The actual career mode (Café) is pretty short. In some areas GT7 looks a few generations older game. For example; the Cafe owner, and the e-sport GT players (basically every character in the game), are communicating with us across a simple text bubble. Seriously??? Like on the original playstation 1. back in time. But for me it's not nostalgic at all, it is embarrassing, pathetic and lazy! In 2022 at least need to be a voice narration! It's mandatory. Not a simple text to read.
Or interactive videos! That's how you do it. But text? So disappointing! My wishlist for GT7 features looks something like this: Dynamic time changes, Dynamic weather changes, Faster Ai, Yearly seasons in tracks (winter, autumn, ect), Improved penalty system, Custom offline championships (so much potential!), Voice messages in races, and in the menus too, to feel the characters alive. Fully customizable and mapable HUD!!! Proper race weekends, with qualifications. Game data out via UDP! As you see most of them still missing, nevertheless most of them doesn't require to much work from the developers... For example; customizable championships, HUD, or UDP data out is a simple one. ... oh, and the music rally or what the heck, is ridiculous

I have created an account here solely for this game. This is how strongly I feel about this game.

I have been gaming for 32 years. I have bought every GT release ever, including all the prologues, specs etc. So I am a big GT lover. This game has been the one game above all else that I have been the most excited for.

For the first 2 weeks, the game was a joy to play, and I was bemused by the complaints of other gamers. Visuals, sound, car physics etc are all top work. No complaints here at all.

However, it becomes crystal clear when you are progressing through the Cafe mode, that the big thing in this game, is the microtransactions and the lack of the GT campaign. After the Cafe mode, which is a forced car collection, there is no GT campaign mode as you have in previous games. There is no section that lists the Amateur, Beginner, professional etc races. No menu where you can jump into the Sunday Cups, or the FF/FR Challenges etc.

Gran Turismo without its campaign mode, and an easy way to jump into competition races, is absolutely abhorrent. This should have been made perfectly clear to us before buying the game.

As you play the Cafe mode, you get roulette tickets for completing certain aspects - the roulette tickets are then an RNG encounter that is heavily, and I mean HEAVILY weighted to give you the lowest reward possible, and then IMMEDIATELY prompts you to buy credits from PSN. I am talking situations where there are 5 rewards, for example a race car, 500k credits, a engine swap, 1million credits, 5k credits. I have yet to receive any cars, any car parts, any gold bars. For every ticket, it has been the lowest credit reward. Reading social comments, this is the same for a large chunk of players.

But it is ok, because you can sell your cars that you ha......oh no. Wait. Nope. Despite the PSN description saying it, and despite it being in GT games forever, you cannot sell your cars for credits. The push for MTX is sickening.

    But that isn't it.

PD are that intent on forcing the MTX, that just yesterday they pushed an update which slashed the credits received for a load of races you select by navigating to the track selector. They did this because gamers were playing one track over and over to get credits, as the game as very little way of rewarding you.

This update killed the game by the way, and as of writing this some 24 hours later, it is still broken. PD want this game online only as they are concerned about credit trading and hacking, so this £70 game is now useless when they are broken their end. (still cant play now)

Playing the game naturally doesn't give the user the credits as they approach the end of the Cafe. In order for the player to gain new cars, aside the daily mileage rewards, there literally is nothing presented to the player. You can't jump into a menu with the competitions in as one doesn't exist. If you want to do a race that was in the Sunday Cup for example, you have to go to the track world, select one of the 3 world areas, then go through each track and select it, and then check what event it is used for, then select the event you want. Crazy navigations.

When we saw the trailers, you see CGI of race weekends, with the trucks and trailers and pit crews etc. As of menu book 37 in the Cafe mode, there has been 1 race with standing starts, and 0 with tyre wear or fuel usage, and 0 with pit action.

There are more things I could mention but I just don't have the effort in me to trash the GT name anymore. I am not angry, even though I should be. I am sorely disappointed that a franchise such as GT has been allowed to become a cesspool of MTX. There has been 0 thought here about how the player will feel with this aggressive push towards buying credits.

The maddening thing, is that the game has all the ingredients there to be a superb racing game ; but they have thrown up a wall of MTX to halt the players progress in the hope they will use their credit card.

This game has been deleted off my system, and unless there is a huge overhaul of this game, the GT franchise is now dead to me.

But... It seems that Polyphony Digitals really want us to use micro transactions in their game because they decided in the last update to reduce the credits earned... So by now you need to do the same race 400 times... Or buy 20 Millions credits for 200$... Fine...

Bait and switch. Offer a single player game that is unusable offline is a major turnoff. Then once reviews are done, PD/Sony 1.07 release nerfs payouts to increase grind, ridiculously high priced "legendary" cars, no ability to sell cars, all in an effort to push MTX. BS

This game represents the pinnacle of corporate greed. You basically pay a full price game to be treated like some mobile free to play user who gets monetized like a commodity. Disgusting cash grab from sony. Shame on them.

Usual gt good quality driving but micro transactions are totally unacceptable in current form, impossible to get good cars without paying out ridiculous costs, shame on Sony.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I’m done with the micro transaction BS with these game companies we as customers need to put our foot down and put an end to it…let these companies know it’s not going to be tolerated any longer. Nurfing payouts on races by over 50% to make customers feel like you have to pay real cash to collect the cars they want is beyond greedy especially after paying $70 for the game to begin with. I (was) a fan that goes all the way back to Gran Turismo 1 and I am now an adult that no longer has unlimited time to grind for credits just to try enjoy the game and have to deal with extremely long downtimes for maintenance. I work really long hours and I couldn’t wait to play some GT7 on my one day off for the week only to find the servers down that entire day. Why do these games need to be “always online”? I have 0 desire to play GT7 online/multiplayer that’s why I hated Sport! I just want to play my game single player offline without any bs DRM nonsense forcing an online connection just to play my game. I understand things happen with updates and maintenance but in my case it left a very sour taste in my mouth and I no longer have any interest in investing my time or playing this game. I couldn’t care less from here on what updates they give it…Polyphony Digital/Sony you lost a long time customer/fan. Expand

You need to be online to play the game, even if you want to play solo! And also need to mano CR to buy a good car. They waited until the game had good rating to push you to microtransations.

This game what can I say fun(sometimes), but frustrating. And what makes it frustrating? Some may ask, let’s see. Is it the expensive legend car? With a rotating list of five. That makes me feel like I’m getting the game's pocket change. After they kick me in my cojones with the added challenges to it. And the answer I can is. Yes, yes, and absolutely f**king yes! And I haven’t gotten into micro-transaction. Which I’m gonna skip. Because there are a lot of reviews on it already. But man this is some corporate bulls**t right here. Just hope they see the reviews. Maybe not. Expand

Had no idea it was gonna be online only. Raytracing is very limited. Doesn’t innovate enough. No free roam driving. Photo mode could be better.

These microtransactions are shameful. Even before the update the daily workout roulette seemed off when it kept landing on the worst spot giving me only 2000 credits ninety percent of the time. The whole thing just leaves a bad taste and especially this line from Yamauchi "....so I do think it’s important for it to be linked with the real world prices.”...this is not going to change forThese microtransactions are shameful. This is the worst Gran Turismo ever. Been a GT Player for 25 years starting on the first one on PSX. I have bought every GT ever since including GT7, The series was always a great game, some better than others but overall always good to play.

Along comes GT7 at the premium price of £70, I am glad I struggled getting a PS5 or I would have pre-ordered the £100 25th Anniversary Edition.

Along comes GT7 at the premium price of £70, I am glad I struggled getting a PS5 or I would have pre-ordered the £100 25th Anniversary Edition. Now where to start.

The first disappoint was during setup when I had to select Performance or Quality for Graphics setting. I wanted quality to start with in order to witness Ray-Tracing but, Ray-Tracing was only enabled in Replay Mode and Photo Mode.

Second disappointment was the woeful User Interface. Go to the Cafe, tap X multiple times to get through the dialogue of Lucas. Then get a Menu and click X multiple time again While dialogue from Lucas was displayed. Thankfully I quickly found a skip option in the settings but that just meant pressing the O button a lot instead of X. You then leave the cafe to go to another part of the UI and repeat the button bashing and repeat. Thankfully the dialogues get less but its a frustration at the start.

Third disappointment, computer AI is very poor, they will run into you if you are on the line they want and 9 times out of ten you will end up in a spin. Only the top 2 cars seem to be any form of a challenge but even they have poor AI.

Fourth disappointment was the bugs introduced in Update 1.06, incorrect tyre choices on Licence challenges. Unable to select dirt tyres on the rally stages and wet tyres on wet challenges. In fact, the tyre issue also had an affect on the main game with Racing Soft tyres giving better grip then full wets in a wet race.

Fifth Disappointment, Update 1.07/1.08. 34 hours downtime due to always online single player game. Reducing payouts meaning Micro Transactions would look more appealing to some and, I still had issues with tyre performance although they tyre issue had been fixed in the Licence challenges.

I decided that all of this within such a short space of the game being launched was reason enough to return the game for a refund. I will pick it up when I see it in a bargain bucket and hopefully the issues are fixed and the game has a lot more content worthy of the original asking price.

    WORST GT EVER

Gran Turismo 7 has a lot of good and plenty of great. The use of DualSense and the particularly well-tuned loading is exemplary, and there's a huge amount of work behind the game, with a lot of detail that's almost hard to believe at times. [Issue#318]

Gran Turismo 7 brings to the tracks every single thing fans always wanted: the GT Mode everyone loves, plenty of customization options, car loads, classic scenarios and one of the best DualSense and 3D Audio experiences the PS5 has to offer. This is the best Gran Turismo experience we have ever seen in a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
