A cool innovation was that you could sometimes play with Atreus and these were so much fun. They had Freya, Brok or Sindri as an accompaniment and that fitted perfectly with the story. Kratos and Freya had an unbelievable character development that made me even cry sometimes. Many plot twists, which surprised me very much with an ending that could not have been better. I could talk about this game for years and how perfect it is but I think we all know how good this game is. Expand

I don't give a 10 because there is no "perfect" but certainly the Nordic God of War series borders on perfection.
Anyway, I don't think it's worth paying 70/80$, I paid 40$ and it was more than worth it.

Definitely my game of the year! Very good exploration, which can provide up to 60-70 hours of fun. And the story never gets boring, on the contrary, more interesting with each discovery. Amazing new characters that don't even need a lot of screen time to make us like them. Ragnarok is amazing.

    I have mixed feelings
At First the game was addictive and attracting, I had the same feelings when I started playing witcher 3, but after 12-14 hours the passion dropped...
Character development + Story are great but the combat unfortunately is not... Keratosis is heavy and slow but atreus is combat is much better and quicker.
Game is fun but could've been better!

God of war Ragnarok, like the pervious title, is a master-piece that no other game has touched to this day.

The variety of moves, combos, and abilities available to Kratos are expanded, allowingOne of the standout features of God of War Ragnarok. Building upon the successful foundation of its predecessor, the combat in Ragnarok is more fluid, diverse, and challenging. Kratos' Leviathan Axe and Atreus' bow have been further fine-tuned, making each strike and shot feel satisfyingly impactful. The variety of moves, combos, and abilities available to Kratos are expanded, allowing players to develop their own combat style.

Additionally, the introduction of new weapons and abilities, acquired throughout the journey, adds depth to the combat system. From powerful elemental gauntlets to devastating runic attacks, players have a broader arsenal at their disposal. This variety encourages experimentation and caters to different playstyles, making battles engaging and rewarding.

God of War Ragnarok also introduces thrilling boss encounters, each uniquely designed and challenging in their own right. These epic battles test the player's skills and strategic thinking, requiring more than just brute force to overcome. The satisfaction of triumphing over formidable foes is unparalleled, and these moments are among the game's highlights.

On the other hand, the narrative in God of War Ragnarok feels overcrowded and lacks the focused storytelling that made the 2018 installment so captivating. While the first game followed a simple yet powerful father-son journey, Ragnarok attempts to weave a complex tale involving various Norse gods, realms, and conflicts. As a result, the plot feels rushed, and some storylines are underdeveloped.

The emotional depth and character development, which were the heart of the 2018 game, take a backseat in Ragnarok. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus feels somewhat neglected, as the narrative jumps from one event to another, leaving little room for meaningful interactions between the two. This lack of emotional connection diminishes the impact of pivotal moments, making them feel less significant than they should.

Furthermore, the inclusion of multiple story arcs and side quests introduces an abundance of characters and lore, often overwhelming the player. While it's exciting to explore the vastness of Norse mythology, it comes at the cost of a tightly-knit narrative. The side quests, while adding to the game's longevity, can feel distracting and dilute the main story's focus.

God of War (2018) was celebrated for its character-driven narrative and emotional resonance, but Ragnarok struggles to maintain the same level of depth and intimacy. The pacing suffers as a result, leaving players with little time to process events and connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Another aspect that takes away from the narrative experience is the open-world nature of Ragnarok. While the idea of exploring the realms and discovering hidden secrets is enticing, it can feel like a departure from the linear, cinematic experience of the previous game. The world of Ragnarok is vast, and the sheer amount of content can sometimes be overwhelming, taking away from the more focused storytelling that made its predecessor memorable.

In conclusion, God of War Ragnarok successfully refines the combat mechanics that made its predecessor a triumph. The fluidity, diversity, and challenge of the combat system elevate the gameplay to new heights, making battles exhilarating and satisfying. However, the narrative of Ragnarok feels rushed and overloaded, with too much going on compared to the simplicity and emotional depth of God of War (2018).

The ambitious attempt to incorporate multiple story arcs and side quests in an open-world setting sacrifices the focused storytelling and character-driven experience that defined the 2018 game. While God of War Ragnarok remains an enjoyable and visually stunning experience, it falls short of capturing the same emotional resonance that its predecessor achieved with a more straightforward, powerful narrative. Nevertheless, fans of the franchise and those interested in Norse mythology will still find much to appreciate in this epic adventure.

Along with the preexisting characters the new ones are a treat. I love there is actually a long running joke in the God of War series that is actually in this game. You will know when you see it. The only legitimate complains that were in 2018’s God of War was the boss variety and enemy variety. Well I can tell you now that is 100% fixed and goes above and beyond. The first hour is a sight to behold and SSM outdoes themselves again. The chemistry between Kratos and Atreus gets even better here as the long journey of father and son continue as their inner turmoil and the interaction with father and son is truly interesting to see. The ending is truly special and a tear jerker. Everything falls into place and is a great send off for the series if they would like to finish it. I applaud Sony Santa Monica to be able to live up to their previous game expectations let alone pass it in every single way. Bravo! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the game is good and has its amazing moments, it lacks in story, combat and UI. Biggest problem I had was the directionless and unfocused story. This is my biggest problem with the game.

    Characters:
Aatreus goes from wanting war to not wanting it to wanting it again for several times. While there is reason for it, the game doesnt let Aatreus sit with reason long enough to earn the change, specially when he changes his mind after short time. Biggest offender is when Brok dies, Aatreus talks about he wouldnt wanted war if this was the consequences of it, yet after creation of Ragnarok (Surtr) he start talking about how war is needed again.
Most jarring change is Sif who does complete 180 without any good reason that is told in game.
Ragnarok (Surtr) got in the way instead and Freyr died of unnecessary death bcs of it.

    Story:
Story feels all over the place. I never understood what Kratos wanted to do, felt like he was doing what everyone told him to do. Which made the game like bunch of storys mushed together.
Some parts where too long and unnecessary but other too short.

For gods sake just talk. Lot of the problem comes from charcters not talking trough it. It is cheap way to make artificial conflict.

    Combat:
Mob enemies has too much health, it just takes too long to kill them. They are also faster and stagger much less than the playable charcters.

    Companions doesnt do much.

Bosses didnt have much of spectacle like 2018 had.

    UI and the gameplay:
UI is a mess and its annoying to navigate through it. When you start your save file your placement is reset to start of mini area, while not that bad it is definitely annoying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s still a solid game. But I’m biased because I love the franchise. There are some very noticeable issues in this game. First and foremost is all the bugs in the launch version. I’ve never encountered any glitches in my three play throughs of 2018 but ran into so many in Ragnarok in just my initial playthrough. Some were serious enough that I had to restart checkpoint to continue. It’s just not polished enough.

The gameplay is fun. Basically the same formula with a few tweaks. I loved it in 2018 so I’m not complaining. The new addition is really useful, but a bit overpowering? The spear basically became my main weapon in the second half of the game.

The story overall is a good conclusion to the duology. There are issues in pacing at times. Like riding a buffalo (for an hour?) with Angrboda is kind of excessive. The important bits of conversations could have been merged into the two gameplay missions in that sequence. I understand the devs want us to know all about the giants and Angrboda. But because it was so long and boring, I started losing interests and stopped paying attention to whatever they were saying, which defeats the purpose.

And also there are noticeable gaps in the story. Maybe something cut? Like when Kratos and Atreus decided that they would not pursue Ragnarok any more and Freya went back to Vanaheim, the next story mission was to go after her. Why did you let her go in the first place? Just felt strange.

I like the ending plot. I think it suits the theme. But it’s underwhelming for its lack of grandeur. I know they had a change of mind and wanted to avoid more destructions and casualties. But maybe a more chaotic battlefield would make this change even more convincing?

The best part of the game for me so far is the side quests. It’s just fun exploring and some areas are very well designed.

Equals or exceeds 2018 in nearly every way. It is a terrific conclusion to the Norse saga. Kratos does it once again. Now just waiting for New Game+ so I can experience the game with the maxed out weapons. Thank you SSM for another emotional, powerful, worthwhile journey.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am simply speechless what a banger of a game Santa Monica Studios has delivered. The story and the worlds are just breathtaking (except for Niflheim, where they could have done more). The characters are not steely heartless monsters, they are rather believable and realistically written. And the battle system is just perfect. If I could, I would give the game a 9.7, because there are some things that I don't find so well done or unnecessary. First of all, the final battle against Odin bothers me because it doesn't feel like the epic showdown the game deserves, and Freya's decision to first forgive Kratos and then Odin doesn't feel realistic. Furthermore, I find the timing at which you unlock Draupnir poorly chosen, I would have put him in either a little earlier or a little later. Also the fight against Heimdall, the actual reason for Draupnir, just feels incredibly random. Finally, I also have to criticize some RPG elements because some armor sets are just so strong that some bosses, even on the highest difficulty, just melt. But I think later patches will fix that. In conclusion, I can say that it's a great game and despite being a fan of the Soul games for years, it's my Game of the Year candidate. If you've read this review so far and strangely haven't played the game yet, here's a tip, it will improve your gaming experience noticeably if you play the game on one of the two higher difficulty levels, as it's just too easy on the medium one. God of War Ragnarök é GOTY.

Bad: Weak combat, everything feels underwhelming. Very short game. No replay value.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ragnarok has to be One of the top 3 in the story-driven games that were released this year, and despite the great similarity between it and its predecessor, it outperformed the latter in several points.
Firstly, the graphics have become much better than the previous part, and I personally liked it very much, but it could have been a better increase if the game had supported Ray tracing, and better lighting in some of the Cutscenes, but in general, the graphics are perfect and the clarity is excellent, especially when you feel like watching The world from above with the amount of immersive atmosphere you feel.
Secondly, and the most important thing, the story, frankly, the story is great and befits the level of the previous part and more, the characters are very well written, and the interaction between them is dynamic and lively, and each one has his own prestige and the way he imposes himself on the screen is more like a movie than a mere game, which is an element that Very few games know how to master, especially adventure games. The thing I didn't like or rather annoyed me was that the game felt a bit heavy in presenting the events for the first six hours, and contained many moments that felt rather just begging for your attention and emotions, let alone other instants that felt completely unnecessary and just pumping up the game time, regardless, But everything from the start to the end was pretty good, I would have also loved if the story ended in a more tragic way, but maybe sometimes it is for the best, and the ending was bittersweet for both Atreus and Kratos, and we saw a very emotional side of the latter.
Thirdly, the gameplay, the gameplay is similar if it was not the same as the first part, with additions whose numbers are small, but their impact is great and radical, the world has become bigger, better, and diverse, the enemies, unlike the previous part, have become much more difficult and diverse, and you feel the difficulty, focus and the heaviness of planning in fighting each type of them that needs a specific strategy in order to defeat them. I loved playing as Atreus and how it was very different from Kratos’ style, the thing that gave the game a new fresh breath. The optimization is quite mid, but it is possible that I did not count this because I could not download the Day one patch, I encountered almost three glitches only, but none was able to ruin the experience for me
In summary, the game gets a solid 9, and that's it.

The norns, the predictions, the mask, every **** side character (like angbroda, thrud, sif… even thor) is useless for the plot. Tyr is a joke, you build up the entire plot on tyr and at 2 hours to the end you litterally say: **** I don’t want to make a good plot, let’s find a turn of events that would blow the player’s mind. Oh yes… then there’s surtur… rushed, wasted and useless character… The game is very lenghtened and most of atreus phases are litterslly useless since prophecies are useless…

The relationship between characters is even more exciting and complicated, with you wanting to know what happens as the emotion is cranked up to 11, even with the occasional "Marvel-esque" style of dialogue. Traversal, while streamlined, can still be cumbersome, but with so much more to do in the game, it only drives you to keep going. I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]
