A really good game that couldn't completely keep up with its predecessor. The visuals are stunning, the story is cool, fighting is fun (the same as in GoW 2018 - but no need to change a running system!), but the pacing feels so off in this one. You jump from one uneccesary endeavor too the next and some parts just feel much to stretched. Still had a good time playing the game!

It does feel like it has that feminine touch, like Thor just leaving after his fight with Kratos rather than being more angry, or even just talking about his sons death just casually is not something that families would do. I would have imagined Odin sending his entire army at Kratos' home instead to capture him rather than having a drink with him.
Everything else still feels like a solid entry to the series.

God of War: Ragnarok continues the epic journey of Kratos and Atreus with stunning visuals and satisfying combat. Character development shines, but the pacing feels uneven, and open-world elements occasionally distract from the narrative. Despite some minor technical issues, it's a solid addition to the series, earning a commendable 6/10.

In the vast landscape of gaming, expectations loom large. Anticipation can often overshadow the product itself. "God of War Ragnarok" is a lamentable example of when such promises not only fall flat but tumble into an abyss of mediocrity.

From its onset, the game grapples with an identity crisis. Gone is the gravitas of Kratos, replaced with a caricature of his former self. The brooding god, once a paragon of rage and redemption, now seems lost, adrift in a sea of incongruous plotlines and half-baked character arcs.

Graphically, one would expect a sequel to leverage advancements in technology. Sadly, "Ragnarok" appears to be stuck in time. The once pristine landscapes of Midgard are marred by texture pop-ins, and character models, surprisingly, lack the attention to detail the previous installment was lauded for. Interactions with the world around you feel stilted, a far cry from the dynamic and responsive environment of its predecessor.

Narratively, the game falters with every step. The plot is a labyrinthine mess of convoluted sub-stories, none of which seem to resonate or culminate in anything meaningful. What was once a poignant tale of father and son is now overshadowed by a cacophony of irrelevant side quests and banal dialogues.

Combat, the series' backbone, feels sluggish and unresponsive. The visceral fluidity of the earlier game's combat system is replaced with a clunky mechanism that often feels like a chore rather than an exhilarating dance of death.

It's truly disheartening to witness such a fall from grace. A franchise that once stood as a beacon of storytelling and gameplay innovation now stands as a cautionary tale of squandered potential.

In conclusion, "God of War Ragnarok" is a disservice to its legacy. It's a jumbled mosaic of misplaced ambitions and underwhelming execution. One can only hope that the series finds its way back to the pantheon of gaming greats in future iterations.

A good game but it feels clunky and audio is subpar and not anywhere near as good as the previous game. Hitting enemies so they hover in the air waiting for your next hit felt great in GoW but in GoW:R it actually feels like they hover and wait for you to hit them. Smashing a tree in two sounds like a matchstick breaking and this lack of oomph in the audio is widespread - again unlike GoW.

I really loved how art-house and inspired 'God of War' (2018) felt. The long one-take cinematic camera really captures this intimacy as you traverse through the Realms. The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

God of War Ragnarök feels like a very sentimental aftermath to that

The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

God of War Ragnarök feels like a very sentimental aftermath to that adventure. Chapter 2 (if you may) the more hopeful light-hearted whimsical adventure that still keeps that sentimental core in-tack. This game continues that theme of 'Being Better' choosing to not let destiny and the past corrupt one's personal growth. Because of this, the game puts more emphasis on extended family and community. Making the game more, again, whimsical by design. This is more a fantasy drama compared to the moody direction of (2018).

This is not a bad thing. Ragnarök is more fun, gamified, compared to the first. I really enjoyed my time playing through Ragnarök for its narrative—and at times—fun gameplay decisions. I will say the best thing about God of War Ragnarök is that it has a very cinematic grand adventure narrative with a lot of depth in its performance, persistent narrative threads. Yet, because of this, the game feels more like a film at times than a video-game. An interactive film – if you may.

With all this positive. Some very critical negatives:
The gameplay feels inconsistent on harder difficulties. I believe they wanted a nice animation based souls-lite combat system. I think this is a great idea, but for what ever reason you do not have invincibility frames allowing for more frantic, fast-paced, combat. Also, you can be damaged quite severely when engaging in combos and cannot cancel attacks. This become VERY infuriating when playing the game. It did create a challenge, but it never felt like I was at fault, more the game locked me into something i couldn't escape from. Reminded me a lot of Dark Souls 2 gameplay for whatever reason. Also the lock-on system jerrkss the camera around too much for my liking. Luckily, the game really allows you to customize your play style in the settings without effecting trophies and achievements. Also, too many of the fighting arenas (near the end of the game) put very fast (unpredictable) enemies way too wedged into tight spaces that create this strange, annoying feeling of fighting the camera more than the actual enemies. Game environments, whilst looking very pretty – genuinely breathtaking – don't offer much in the way of inversive gameplay elements (only one or two maps/open world segments do)

God of War Ragnarök is a very fitting conclusion for Kratos. A very beautiful send off to a hardened, troubled character that learns to 'be better'. I, overall, just wish the combat was smoothed up and the level design was a lot tighter and varied.

Overall, a solid 8/10 (i haven't completely completed the game yet - want to do all the after Ragnarök side stuff)

For being a sequel this doesn't bring anything too newto the table,it's a pot of the same from the first game and like the irst game it has nothing to do with God of war at all,the combat and the characters has anything to do with the original game, the only thing that link with the original franchise it's the character Kratos but unfortunately it's only the name, the character overall it's a total diferente character doing things that it's pretty uncharacteristic for the Kratos character.

The game has a very good combat system, doesn't add nothing too new to the game,it feels more like an expansion that a sequel but unfortunately the very slow paced story makes with walk and watch characters speak most of the time with some pretty boring and cliche dialog instead of showing more of the story through gameplay.

I really think if this game wasn't called "God of war" it could been a way better game with some interesting story, but since it try so hard to keep the franchise name to attract more public it end up with a mediocre story that ends up interrupting a lot the good gameplay

Every emotion was experienced playing this game, the story, the narrative, the characters full of life and the accompanying musical score made me feel like I was back in high school watching LOTR for the first time again.

Ragnaroks gameplay is built off what made it successful in the 2018 adaptation and have expanded meaningful and interesting content to fill the beautiful world they created. I haven't had so much fun doing side missions in a long time, as the game cultivates each of these experiences with additional lore and story. The dialogue between each character and the history about them are further expanded on as you decide to go off the beaten path and explore the rest of the realms.

The combat has been tuned even further providing much more meaningful encounters. However, as perfect as the game has been there were still some annoying timing issues I found dodging certain attacks that felt completely random at times. This is especially prominent in harder difficult fights similar to the Valkrie bosses from 2018. It certainly added frustration but not enough to deter me from this great game.

I could write the 5k character limit on this review but their is no need. This game is a MUST PLAY on any platform, hopefully it will release on PC so PC players can experience this modern day marvel of a game.

Let me start by saying, this is ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I have played.

One the story front, it’s a direct continuation of the 2018 God of War game. So the initial moments does feel like the game you have already played, but once it takes off and new game-play elements are introduced it just feels fresh. To put it simply it’s a great story overall to experience that I won’t spoil further.

One the story front, it’s a direct continuation of the 2018 God of War game. So the initial moments does feel like the game you have already played, but once it takes off and new game-play elements are introduced it just feels fresh. To put it simply it’s a great story overall to experience that I won’t spoil further. The game is a graphical powerhouse on PS5, some designs like the Frozen Lake of Nine, Sindri's House, The Wall in Asgard etc are standout in my memory. Game play is total fun, some light puzzle elements for cool down time and the hack-slash combat is so much enjoyable to play. It really improves over the first game with lots of new enemy types, boss and mini-boss battles. Game has very nice difficult setting (I Played on Normal / Give me Balance) where the enemies provide a decent challenge, but if you do fair amount of Side missions / Favors and get gear upgrades, enemies are lot easier to defeat. The climax sequence for some non-stop action, that was epic. Main background score is retained from last game, which was great already hence no complaints. It’s a game with lots of cinematic elements where you see lots of cut-scenes, QTE in between which I enjoy actually; I understand some people may not like these.

There are a couple of missions where we play as Atreus that slightly drags and feels lengthy, which is the only complaint for me in this game. But in the overall scheme of things, it’s minor and negligible.

Just like the previous game, loved the way the side missions / favors are designed where you don't have go too much out of your path to play these and are nicely fit into the Areas you visit during story missions. Another great thing is the game’s attention the Lore. People who have read about Norse mythology will appreciate the game even more. All the dialogues during our travel between missions add so much detail and importance to the story, something which I truly admired.

Overall it’s a fantastic journey to experience on the PS5. If you are a fan of the 2018 game, just do yourself a favor and BUY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW!

While 2018 GoW was not a very "open world", this feels like a game on rails the entire time. They went so far as to throw up asinine & arbitrary barriers in many places you've already been to when you try to revisit earlier areas.

The combat is a bit deeper, however the actual encounters are mostly much worse, especially for trash mobs. Whereas Souls games use creative combat and good skill sets to make even the trash challenging to defeat, GoW:R went with the "more health, more mitigation, more damage" route, and that's it. Kratos is no god in GoW:R. He's barely able to take 2 hits from trash mobs on the hardest difficulty b/c that's all they could come up with for difficulty.

In 2018, the story moved along with a very good pace without too many distractions. GoW:R constantly flips between Kratos/Atreus, Atreus/X, Kratos/Freya, Atreus/Y, Atreus/Z, just non-stop. The work you've done over the last 4 hours feels undone as you move from 1 setting to another, and the pace of the story goes from a gallop back to a trot as it tries to orientate you to the new chapter/character combo.

    Various other complaints:

    1. Way too much backtracking
    2. Lots of broken AI with mobs and your teammates sitting there doing nothing very often. Many difficult fights just break and the mobs sit there until you kill them (2 trolls did this, werewolves do this very often as well)
    3. Inappropriate jokes. Why is a Seinfeld joke in a GoW game?
    4. Unnecessary cuckolding of Atreus by Thrud with modern "sensibilities" feeling incredibly out of place
    5. No planning allowed for any encounters. Nearly everything spawns out of nowhere. This is a cheap trick to make the game last longer and nothing more.
    6. Several 1 ways that make no sense at all
    7. Another Playstation game that vastly overpads the game time by putting in far too much climbing. Do PS fanboys really enjoy this? It adds nothing to the game but annoyance and time. It isn't interesting or challenging like Breath of the Wild, a 5+ year old game on a much less advanced system.

Again, not a horrible game, just not nearly up to the same standards that GoW 2018 set. Anyone talking about this for "Game of the Year" is blinded by bias or paid off by Sony.

I don't know. Technically it is a Superior game. Crazy how polished and detailed it is.
But the gameplay didn't really make a step forward. A few more moves, but that's it. The mechanics are good and work, but could need a little more "impact", "power". I don't feel like a god of war, and yes, he becomes Old, but i don't feel that either.

+ Some characters have good design like Thor, Odin and Freya
    + nice looking snowy areas
    + heavy and perfect combat

    - A bit flat and cheesy dialogue from time to time
    - Bit boring design on some of the characters, very cringed and flat american design.
    - NFT looking ragnarök.....
    - Climax is as flat as an marvel movie
    - not much rewarding to explore the world

God of War: Ragnarok manages to maintain the quality of the previous game. While the story is not as strong as the last game, it is still intriguing. The gameplay is not as innovative, but that is fine, since the last game had perfect gameplay as is. So, while this seems like a minor upgrade, the previous game was so good that I didn’t mind playing more of it.

I also found the story to be more interesting as well. Being able to play as Atreus, albeit only sporatically throughout the story, is another request of mine fulfilled this time around. Ragnarok may not be a groundbreaking sequel, but it is a more fully realized one, in the same sense that God of War II (2007) was to the very original. Expand

Often you are fighting multiple foes at once, so when you are chipping away at one enemy another one is always trying to stab you in the back so you need to Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge out of the way every few hits. To date I'm not sure I've ever played a game that has felt as much like a movie as these two. The single shot camera following without ever cutting has a lot to do with that, as does the character design and exploration.

Unfortunately said character exploration here, and the greater story at large, is frequently and on the whole awful. This is perhaps as textbook a case as I can think of of plot leading the characters, wherein the characters frequently make absurd and frustrating decisions simply to move the gameplay from one phase to the next. The central plot all told is fairly meaningless and difficult to believe from basically anyone's standpoint except Odin, but that too broke down when interacting w/ the rest of the gang. I frequently found myself shaking my head in disbelief and just waiting to move on hoping the story would get better, but it only got worse. The dialogue is also stilted and very poorly paced with long, long pauses in between lines for no apparent reason.

The climax is rather anti-climactic, and the final stage feels rushed and not to the scale of epicness the series has often drawn in the past. The level design is also pretty drab and repetitive, such that it doesn't really seem all that rewarding to explore some of the hidden areas, and most of what you're doing is just plugging along in the obvious direction you're being pushed.

These elements would probably not feel as bad if it weren't for the aforementioned cinematic quality the game does so well, but if you're going to make it feel like a movie, the story and design need to hold to such standards, and this does not (at least not a good one).

But it's still fun because of the great combat, and some intermediate moments of pathos for our heros. I'm not particularly eager for the spin-off they seem to setup, but maybe they can improve the story enough to make that more engaging.

The combat overhaul and added verticality to level design managed to address most of the issues of the first game. They were more minor complaints for me, granted, but seeing that addressed, seeing a dedicated button added to give your attacks more elemental damage, being able to strike from above, the tweaks to the Spartan Rage system, other upgrades that shall not be mentioned here for the sake of Spoilers... all were great choices that culminated in an amazing gameplay experience.

The narrative... it's hard to get into that without spoilers, but the way they managed to weave the storyline together in the main missions so masterfully, while enhancing it in side missions in such a way that it adds to and enriches the story without locking anything crucial to it behind them is just plain amazing. The ending feels like such a satisfying conclusion both for this story arc and for Kratos' arc in general that, even though I do hope for more, they could honestly just end the franchise here and it would feel complete.

Can't recommend the game enough. It's a heck of an experience.

This game is EXCELLENT! Its very much like the first but improved and expanded upon without changing the formula. Its an immediate sequel thus you will need to have played the first one to know whats going on.

I am not going to spoil anything but I will say this is one of my favorite representations of Norse mythology ever done that I can think of. Yes, Santa Monica took some liberties but it is amazing. The acting, writing, and overall performance is top tier. Especially with the phenomenal graphics.

Combat is more fluid than the first (GoW 4 technically). Just feels a bit tighter and cleaner. The weight from impacts is still solid and amazing.

The amount of Accessibility options is amazing BUT I wished there were 2 more settings:

    - Puzzle Hints from NPCs: Default, Delayed, Delayed+, OFF
    - Gyro Aim (Motion Controls) ON all the time

Atreus and Mimir give hints way too quickly in the game for puzzles. This was annoying. Same problem happened with Horizon FW but if I recall they eventually patched a slider for adjusting this in their Accessibility options. GoW needed the same.

Gyro Aim is an EXCELLENT addition for ranged combat and makes it much more responsive and intuitive like if you were using a mouse. Im a main Gyro Aim user and so I extremely appreciate this addition. The implementation was excellent and feels great. My only suggestion is to have a Gyro ON all the time with Flick Stick. This is incredibly responsive and my go to method.

    None the less, AMAZING game.

Unfortunately, this one felt like a struggle for the first 20 hours, and that soured me for the rest of the play through. The story didn't feel like it got going until the first time you played as Atreus. Other than that is was; go here, press button, go back there, press button, since and repeat. It was really mind numbering and felt like filler. It also didn't help that the combat felt more like a chore this time.

The other thing I found really lacking in this one was the wonderment. Number 1 had so many jaw-dropping moments of sheer wonderment and imagination; Freyr's turtle/house, the realm machine, the realm of the elves Alfheim - I could go on and on. The variation of foes, locations, creatures, etc was inspiring.

The story in Ragnarok does have a lot of heart though, and is the best thing about the whole experience, but again, it takes way too long for it to kick into gear.

Overall, for me, it would have been a far stronger game with more wonderment and less bloating and filler. I've played it once, and that will be it, I have zero desire to go through it again.

On the surface it looks and feels just like GOW 2018 but upon closer inspection in turns out to be a boring mess of a game. There’s excessive amount of cutscenes, slow walking & talking sections and a ton of very linear, overly simplistic levels with little to no player agency (Ironwood!). I felt so much more freedom in GOW 2018, here devs are hand-holding the player all the time.

Ragnarök completely forgets what made GOW 2018 narrative so good - it was minimal but effective at telling a very personal story. This one tries to be epic but it's completely unfocused. For most of the game there is no clear goal or objective, the heroes just roam different realms doing errands, wondering what's next and where they should even go. And yeah, Ragnarök is coming... I guess. Kratos is a passive passenger in his own game, the rest of the characters are either a complete letdown (Tyr) of annoying (Atreus).

Gameplay is fine but it's wasted on trite mission objectives & linear level design. The game was supposed to be semi open-world but for most of it you're on a extremely linear path either in a straight corridor, combat room or just meandering, listening to endless exposition. Combat and enemies get really repetitive real fast. I don't recommend playing the game on higher difficulty modes. It's very poorly conceived - hard mode is more of a chore rather than challenge. The enemies become damage sponges and most get "super armor" (they don't react to stuns, staggers, juggle starters, etc). At some point I just changed it to normal:/

It blows my mind that this game is getting so many 10/10s and being labeled a "masterpiece". It's an extremely flawed title - the story sucks, the game is very linear and overly simplistic in its design, constantly taking agency away from the player. I really wanted to like this one but came away sorely disappointed:(

I've been gaming since the Atari and Sega Master System. Games like this don't come along often. 10/10, a masterpiece.

such a masterpiece and one of the best games of all time. 2018 game is like a prelude for Ragnarok. the game is bigger and better in every single aspect.

It's decent but good graphics and cutscenes alone do not a 'game of the year' make. It feels like all gameplay could be considered Cut Content from the 2018 release. More of the same.

It's been out for almost 3 months and most bugs I've encountered are minor... Until now. 43 hours in, I have a game breaking bug that I cannot fix - not by reloading autosave files. Checking online there

Game of the year my ***.

God of War Ragnarök is everything you could possibly want from a sequel. I was blown away by the craft - it is exceptional video game production. The story, the characters, the environments, the combat, as well as the performances are all top tier across the board. This is another must-play from Santa Monica Studio.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
