    After waiting almost 20 years for Square to produce a game that took my attention away from the real world and into a world of fantasy (ff10 being the last one) I'm happy to say that this has delivered. Yes if I could have it my own way I'd still be playing turn based and have a free roam world but I just need to accept that times have changed.

    The cutscenes in this game are something else, the combat I can accept, did get boring a couple of hours in but eventually I started to feel sucked into the story and combat and found myself being completely immersed in it's story.

    Disclaimer: I lost interest in FF games after FFIX. While I tried every FF game since, they never quite held my interest after the PS1 titles. I’m the odd duck that thought FFVIII was the best FF game and XVI, to me, feels like this gen’s embodiment of what VIII was. Beautiful game, dark undertones, amazing, serious adult characters that feel more dramatic. It’s a slow burn for the firstDisclaimer: I lost interest in FF games after FFIX.     What an absolute masterpiece in storytelling. This just might be the best Final Fantasy entry of all time.

    I have never been more enthralled with a story and characters in any media. The ending was one of the most beautiful endings to a story I've had the pleasure of witnessing.

    How lucky are we that we were able to experience something like this.

    Visually beautiful, FF16 fails like so many other console games in terms of accessibility. Controller mapping type A, B, or C is a slap in the face to anyone who relies on mapping actions.

    ff16 is an amazing game but It feels some RPG elements could have been better.
    Fidelity mode is the best way to experience the game especially if you are using a big screen or 4k monitor but I expect there will be patches to improve performance, a locked 45fps would be way better.

    A great game with insane moments that will definitly be remembered a loooong time. The game is far from beeing perfect but the gameplay is really plaisant when mastered and i enjoyed pretty much every character.

    Final Fantasy XVI is nothing short of perfect. As a long time fan of the FF series I am so happy to play such a beautiful game with yet again another great storyline.

    I'm willing to place bets on this game winning GOTY easily - plus the soundtrack is worthy of awards itself - well done Square & CBU3!

    This game is good, regardless of the weaker aspects, which indeed should be criticized.

    First of, the pros: - combat style was refreshing, action loaded and easy to learn, not really hard to master imo ; 9/10 - scenery and setting was point on, looked amazing whether it was the outer wilds, towns or arenas of showdowns regarding boss fights 10/10 - music was very much to my liking,    This game is good, regardless of the weaker aspects, which indeed should be criticized.

    First of, the pros:
    - combat style was refreshing, action loaded and easy to learn, not really hard to master imo ; 9/10
    - scenery and setting was point on, looked amazing whether it was the outer wilds, towns or arenas of showdowns regarding boss fights 10/10
    - music was very much to my liking, captivating the atmosphere of different sceneries and events very well, fits to FF ; 9/10
    - the main story line is well fledged-out, although implying a lot of clishees, generic elements of plot progression ( like plot armor for no reason and developments where you'd be like 'yeah right, sure...' ) and some blank characters, it is an interesting one to explore with the main acting chars being well designed and individually different fitting to their role ; overall main story is a solid 8/10 for me, since it lacks in a lot of ways, feels unfinished or even at times unreasonably rushed with its development, but still an enjoyable journey
    - graphics, gameplay, UI all felt very good to me, even though without the PS5's 'performance mode' it at times would seem your console resembles a little nuclear fission reactor; 8/10
    - Voice acting was great done imo and i tested out German, English and Japanese, with each having different yet fitting approaches to giving the character more detail to their traits and behvaiour; 9/10

    Now off to the cons we go.... because there are indeed some:

    - one of the worst aspects to me was the dialogues and the facial expression of characters;
    dialogues at times are redundant, boring, not really giving much info, but seem more of a filler as to say 'just put anything, regardless of reason, character, context, emotions or logic' and this feeling was present the most with side quests, although it at times felt also present in the main story , it was way less;
    the facial expressions are something else, the emotions that should be conveyed through context of the current situation and given dialogue is just lost (!), unfortunately this is present in every aspect, for example: Main Character (MC) has an edgy outfit and most of the time a saddened, even depressing look on his face, even when smiling it rather seems forced. Now a striking, fatal or even devastating message arrives or gets to his ears about the demise of one of his friends or something and all that happens is: His face looks like always, bc MC looks legitimately always sad. Facing in a generic and robotic his conversation partner and goes in a monotone way like ' Oh, thats sad. Sorry to hear that.' and even when the voice actors do their magic providing outstanding perormance the emotions simply get lost and instead of feeling the sympathy of loss i had to burst out laughing due to the bad acting and visualization of facial expressions and overall behaviour. Another example was a left out letter, that MC finds and hands immediately to a former a friend of the recently deceased boss and friend: The character starts crying while reading... at least thats what you hear, but due to the poor visualization there are no tears and just a small pull of his eyebrows pathetically trying to resemble someone's grief. i couldn't help but lauhgh... Now imagine FF7 and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aerith dies, you witness this moment and instead of falling alongside Cloud into despair - bc thats how good they delivered back then!!! - you burst out laughing bc of his goofy,robotic face and feel sarcastically entertained by the actual depressing statements happening at that very moment, thats how bad FF16 delivers on that part

    -Gearing did not feel satisfactory at all as there are not much aspects to go for, whether you seek for a broad deal of weapons, enchantments or greater upgrades, they are not existent; most of the stuff you could farm is a handful of items holding not much worth to it; its not horrendous or anything, but feels more like a poor version of 'God of War' itemization with very limited and not too encouraging options to explore

    -Exploring did also not feel too interesting, if you wtinessed the scenery of arenas, cities and the outer wilds, you basically seen and explored it all as even the varying enemies at one point feel recycled; for example the executioner of Titan has a big, big axe to decapacitate. He very soon becomes recycled as a enemy in the desert with a slightly different clothing style and his big, big axe is just in a wooden optic instead of steel

    - Side quests were aside from some horrible as they felt the most generic from their setup story-wise or even from the conditions to be fulfilled, they felt useless and a waste of time just as much as the dialogue and the content to it; Running stupid from a to b makes no quest good

    Overall, this game is a good and solid entertainment and a worthwile part of the FF series to be enjoyed at least for once, even with all the flaws.    … Expand

    A masterpiece plain and simple. Great combat that has a lot of depth, incredible world building and characters, remarkable voice acting, legendary music from M. Soken: the greatest game composer of our time and some of the best graphics ever seen in a video game are just some of the highlights of this incredible game. I see FF16 as a perfect action game compliment to FFVII Rebirth’s more team based tactical combat. And i would love to see the FF series alternate between these distinct directions in future installments to cater to everyone whether you love action dmc style gameplay or more traditional rpg mechanics.     The combat feels SO, GOOD. The first time I got to control Ifrit for real, I got a smile on my face from how smooth and awesome it felt.
    Absolutely loving the story, the Eng voice acting is amazing and music is great as expected. It's great to see the game not shy away from dark topics and showing some messed up things. This is something that's been missing in a lot of    Potential GOTY.

    This game has only pros, highlights for story and graphics, the game play has changed a bit for action RPG than turn based RPG but I need to say that they did a great job. This game had the potential to be the game of the year! Congrats for Square Enix.

    Personally it's one of my favorite games from last 3 years and overall top 3 game of 2023. I'm the type who absolutely loves FF7 Remake and it's modern combat, so i'm only welcoming FF 16 combat. It's long, fun, sad, impressive, beautiful (graphics) and simply epic video game. Lots of monsters, bosses to fight with, lots of great characters and so on. As many have mentioned, side questsPersonally it's one of my favorite games from last 3 years and overall top 3 game of 2023. I'm the type who absolutely loves FF7 Remake and it's modern combat, so i'm only welcoming FF 16 combat. It's long, fun, sad, impressive, beautiful (graphics) and simply epic video game.     A perfect blend of story, music and gameplay. The core of the FF game is still there, but the way it's being shown is slightly different.

    The action heavy battle system is a welcome change, because it has been implemented very well.

    Story is shocking and full of twists and turns, you can't predict what is going to happen next.

    The music is just epic.

    The best game I've played this year.

    Just half way through! I really do not nuderstand the negative reviews. It is an amazing experience. I do not give a 10/10 just for the combat as it feels "too much" sometimes, like "feeling dizzy too much". THe rest are amazing. Story, characters etc. I place it among the top 5 FF games.... and trust me I KNOW FF games since 1997.

    The fights are repetitive, the loss of control in the middle of some Boss fights is ridiculous, and the earlier bosses can be easily cheesed... Besides, the scripted "run for your life" scenes offer no real danger of a game over and you mostly can just walk without risk... The side quests are tedious, and the hubs are empty...     It's safe to say that at least in terms of story and boss battles this has become my favourite Final Fantasy title if not RPG in general. Yes, it's not perfect. Sidequests are bad. Albeit they get better over time. And it's a shame this game is so easy even without the timely accessories. They give you such a fun battle system and tools to play around    Finished 60% of the game so far.

    Yes, it's not perfect. Sidequests are bad. Albeit they get better over time. And it's a shame this game is so easy even without the timely accessories. But even with it's faults, this has to be one of the most exciting games I have ever played. The Eikon battles are insane.     What defines Final Fantasy is an epic story intertwined with captivating worldbuilding, magic, summoning, swords, Chocobos, moogles, quests, airships, and a narrative that tugs at your heartstrings. It's a game that transports you to another world, immersing you in its profound plot and next-generation experience.

    This game nails all of these and does it like none of the othee non online ones have done since 7-9.

    Anyone that cant see this has not played the game or ignored most of the sidequest that are important to the games story.

    The people review bombing this game. Are just stuck in the past thinking if the game is not turned based its not a final fantasy wich is completly incorrect. Turnbased and final fantasy was more of a thing because it was the best way to work amd synergise with the story at the time due to the limitations of the technology.

    Legit no performance issues at all for me even on graphics mode. Yall prob to send your ps5 in for a rma if your experancing performance issues. I have not seen a single one. Probibly something wrong with your systems cooler or something.

    Quests are actual amazing and I want to do them for once. They are meaningfull and impactfull to the story and add depth to the story as well.

    I have finally crawled out of the hole I spent the last 4 days to write a review. Please bear with me as I ramble on here, because I don't actually know what I'm going to say yet.

    Where to even begin? For the past 4 days I've been glued to the screen for 12+ hours each day, absolutely gripped by what we have got here. Wearing my bias on my sleeve, the only other FF game I played    I have finally crawled out of the hole I spent the last 4 days to write a review. Please bear with me as I ramble on here, because I don't actually know what I'm going to say yet.

    Where to even begin?

    For the past 4 days I've been glued to the screen for 12+ hours each day, absolutely gripped by what we have got here. Wearing my bias on my sleeve, the only other FF game I played before this was Crisis Core and XIV. The rest I couldn't give a toss about. I played this game not because it's Final Fantasy, but because of the people who mad it. Heck, I got a PS5 because of the people who made this game.

    In one short sentence; Worth it. Not disappointed.

    For those that don't know CBU3 (Creative Business Unit 3) was responsible for the revitalisation of Final Fantasy 14 after its initial failed launch and its subsequent development since. Helmed by their director and producer Naoki Yoshida, the MMO has been going from strength to strength, which is a rare occurrence in the genre.

    So when I heard that the next mainline FF game was going to have the same team attached to it, I knew it was going to be a great time. Just wasn't quite ready for how great of a time it will be.

    Let's get something straight right out of the gate; Combat, gameplay loop and systems a Final Fantasy game does not make. Story does; and the story we have on hand here is most definitely 'Final Fantasy'. That means a great world, loads of character drama intertwined with the current geopolitical state of the world as we observe these larger-than-life tragedies through the characters they affect, rather than from a bird's eye view. We see and feel the personal stakes each character (protagonist, antagonist or otherwise) has wrapped up in the days' problems.

    Combat is great and yes, it is FINALLY full and fully action combat. None of this weird, locking you into an attack animation once you press a button so it's not turn-based but actually it's turn based thing FF7R did.

    Although playing in Graphics mode, being locked to 30fps, definitely introduces some input delay which can make or break some of the tougher encounters when it comes down to the wire, though it's nothing you can't get used to over the course of the game's runtime. Eikon abilities I'm happy to say are varied and combining them allows for countless different playstyles. Personally I prefer to endure a foe with precision dodges while whittling down their 'Will Guage' so they open up with a Stagger, which is when I unleash my big hitting, single target abilities while Limit Breaking or 'Priming', as Clive enters a Semi-Eikon status. Which is an approach just as viable as any other build. There is definitely a freedom of choice on mixing and matching abilities and builds are only as viable as the player's skilled at using them.

    Soken music.

    Now at this point you might be thinking 'well but Yoake why did you give the game an 8? you've been singing its praises'

    It's locked behind the purchase of a magical box from the wizard Sony.
    The motion blur is still very noticeable even 40 hours in. We need to be able to turn it off, period. That alone is probably worth a full new playthrough as the scenery is extremely smeared anytime you aren't standing still. Not a problem during combat, as things move fast, but just for exploration and moving around, it needs to go.
    Some pacing issues in the story that I understand, but still find jarring.

    All in all, this game is a masterpiece that will define the PS5 as a console. It is a must own and a must play. I eagerly look forward to CBU3's next entry into the line of Singleplayer FF games. Also while I have your attention;

    Spoilers if ONLY you haven’t played the Demo, i ask you to try it

    The game is amazing, the story is captivating, the side characters i liked the most were Cid and Cyril and Jill and Goetz and of course Torgal and Joshua and Byron, the rest could use some more perspective I also liked the combat, it’s simplistic in a good way and too many games opt for the souls like approach nowadays that    Spoilers if ONLY you haven’t played the Demo, i ask you to try it

    The game is amazing, the story is captivating, the side characters i liked the most were Cid and Cyril and Jill and Goetz and of course Torgal and Joshua and Byron, the rest could use some more perspective I also liked the combat, it’s simplistic in a good way and too many games opt for the souls like approach nowadays that they think hard=good, although one caveat is that i wish we can use all Eikon powers simultaneously since you can only equip 3 at a time

    The music is beyond great, the cutscenes as well, i wish we controlled the characters and performed the crazy moves in the cutscenes instead though, the game takes control too often, i also wish we could’ve transform all the Eikons we have, but you can’t unfortunately, even a mini version would’ve sufficed

    The side quests were mostly boring, i found myself skipping them and just getting it done so i earn exp, the crafting system is really just a small bump (very small) in stats, i wish they could’ve incorporated the element of the Eikon into weapons so we have fun since we can’t transform to them willingly unless it’s story related

    Really a 8.5/10 game, i enjoyed it and on my way to platinum it, but this falls in comparison to ff7 remake intergrade for example Is it an immediate buy? Yes if you can overlook all the things i mentioned above

    Is it worth it? Yes because the foundation is excellent but falls short on some ends

    Is it a good final fantasy game? Somewhat, the real time combat pushes people away from it because it was what essentially made the series, but players don’t really know what they want, it’s a creative director’s responsibility to make something and make it presentable to us, so i would say it’s better to be open to new things rather than a biased look, relax…you’ll live longer    … Expand

Side quests - I know some are a bit lame but they are not pointless. It helps you grasp the situation and the story. It adds understanding of how they are treated as branded.

    In the end, I give it a 6, because this isn't an RPG. It barely touches what made Final Fantasy the juggernaut that it is. I am okay with innovation, testing waters and the likes, but this would've been a better standalone rather than slapping the final fantasy brand on it.

    This is probably the last time I will pre-order a mainline Final Fantasy game because as a fan of the genre since 6, and I've played each one and even the spinoffs, world of final fantasy, etc., I think this is a huge let down of the brand.

    It's like toyota suddenly taking away reliability from its products. Or Ferrari suddenly entering the compact sedan market that despite the badge, you'd still probably hate the product.

    In the end, the game is good. But not for the brand it represents. What's painful though is that, it's gonna take another 5-10 years before another mainline final fantasy comes our way. and the fact that we're left with this, it feels such an empty next few years.

    Looking forward to rebirth. I hope the RPG elements, whether mentioned or not, is more involved compared to 16.    … Expand

The story and characters are absolutely phenomenal, Ben Starr absolutely steals the show as Clive and floored me with his performance.     The combat is top tier, while some may miss the slower more tactical pace of turn based combat, my combo labbing itch has been scratched. The Ekionic abilities offer so much variation in your gameplay and combo into each other nigh seamlessly. As I move into NG+ and Final Fantasy mode (Ultimaniac when I. Good and ready LMAO) I find myself experimenting more and more with different abilities, finding what works and what doesn't.

    The music, utterly magnificent. But that much is to be expected of Masayoshi Soken. The man brings his years of musical experience with FFXIV into FFXVI with ease and continues to show why exactly he continues to run shoulders with some of the best composers Square has to offer.

    Now the game isn't perfect, it has its pacing issues, sidequests at the start are basically MMO fetch quests, and locking Final Fantasy mode behind a first game completion to me was the wrong move as it would have certainly helped people who wanted a harder difficulty from the beginning and didn't understand the differences between Action focused amd Story focused. But it's Pros heavily outweigh those cons. FFXVI proves that FF is still a fantastic franchise and I cannot wait to see what else Square has in store for FF7R Rebirth.    … Expand

    I have been playing for three hours…nothing but cutscenes and walking corridors. Fighting is automatic and if you look around while walking the blurring effect will make you sick. Characters are flat. The greatest disappointment is reading all these (I strongly suppose) fake reviews giving 10 to these orribile game. Amazing graphic and good design but I am not here to watch a movie

Windows are constantly popping up which disrupt gameplay, every time a quest is completed, or a new mainline quest starts, or upon level-up, or upon defeating enemies, etc. FF16 feels like any other AAA game: Don't think for yourself to progress the game, simply chase the objective marker around the world until the credits roll.
    2. UI Clutter (Kills immersion) - Quest icons and objective markers are constantly floating around the screen like annoying little bugs. Everything in the game is indicated with brightly-colored and/or animated icons. The Quest Tracker is persistently onscreen with no option to hide it. Damage numbers and enemy health bars cannot be disabled.
    3. Linear - FF16 gives FF13 flashbacks. This is not a good thing.
    4. Quick Time Events - These should be non-interactive cutscenes, so the player can sit back and enjoy the great cinematics, instead of mindlessly mashing whatever button appears on the screen. Nobody likes QTE.
    5. Overly-simplistic Equipment System
    6. Motion Blur - Cannot be disabled
    7. Visually-noisy Combat - During combat, so many obnoxious visual effects are occurring, which makes it difficult to see what is happening. This makes it difficult to focus on the correct enemy and time attacks/dodges
    8. Poor Performance - FPS frequently drops, resulting in noticeable stutters and choppy gameplay
    9. Lame Sidequests (Kills immersion): Side quests require zero thought, as you simply chase objective markers until the quest is complete.
    10. No sense of exploration or discovery - Everything is thrown in your face, as if your are a moron (Kills immersion): Side quests are marked on the map and with floating icons onscreen, items in the environment are large, brightly-lit, & animated, coffers are marked with an icon which can be seen through walls, etc.
    11. Combat - Most of the combat is fun and engaging. The one terribly-implemented combat aspect is controlling Torgal. To control Torgal, you must swap between two different onscreen menus: One for using healing items, and one for issuing commands to Torgal. This is just dumb. You should not have to choose between either using healing items _or_ controlling your AI companion. Torgal should act completely autonomously. If anything, Torgal should have cooldowns which are occasionally activated by the player, but Siccing, Ravaging, and Healing should be fully automated. The accessory which does make Torgal behave this way should not exist, as this is how Torgal should behave by default.
    12. Slow Menus - Menus are animated, so it takes an unnecessarily long time to open, close, and navigate between menus
    13. Lame Eikon Fights - Eikon battles look good, but there is zero challenge to them. They should have just been cutscenes the player could sit back and just enjoy watching.    … Expand

Its unforgiving in an annoying way, where you just take hits that it feels like should have been perfect dodges. i don't know how else to put it. If you like the Witcher and Game of Thrones - obviously Final Fantasy - you are going to love this.     A superficial experience. The itemization and progression is terrible. The action combat is pretty cool but came at the expense of so much that made the Final Fantasy series great. They can add action combat without losing dang near everything that made FF great along the way.

    I'm not a fan of classic RPG 's or Turn Based combat games. FF XVI brings amazing graphics with action combat mechanics I like. Only this and FF7 Remake made me play a game of the series. Even since the FF XVI demo was released, the experience have been really outstanding. Hoping to see more FF games like this in the future.

    An amazing game. GOTY quality. Amazing bad ass music. Heart felt and amazing story. And the combat is very fluid and very fun. Although on performance mode FPS can dip down and seems sluggish it hasn't ruined my playthrough and I love how expansive the story is.

    After playing Final Fantasy 15, I was worried about the direction 16 would go. Having just finished Final Fantasy 1-6 pixel remaster, the joy was back. 16 delivers where it needs to; amazing story, wild graphics, and engaging characters.

    I haven’t been this invested and excited about a Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy 10. Plenty of story the characters are awesome. The gameplay is really technical but you have to add the style and take your time to learn the system. I feel like people who play it and complain aren’t really playing it right.     Let's face it the motion blur is WAY too much and make me feel unwell. So quality mode feels unplayable.
    Performance mode is way uglier and has a lot of drop of frame rate that you notice and feel.
    For me this is makes it's not GOTY material unless they fix it..
