Acme Gamestudio has delivered an incredible debut with Asterigos: Curse of the Stars. If like me, you’ve been suffering from Souls-like burnout, this might be the game for you. It’s gorgeous to look at, constantly engaging and an absolute joy to play. Asterigos is not just one of the best indie games I’ve played this year, but one of the best, most complete games I’ve played in a long time, indie or otherwise. It’s an outstanding, honest-to-goodness adventure made with love, sincerity and attention to detail. It is incredible; play it.

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a triumph, a title of such confidence and quality that it feels like the work of a veteran studio, rather than a studio trying its hand at the genre for the first time. With a truly flexible combat system, an engaging and deep narrative, and a gorgeous visual style that makes the most of its Greek and Roman inspirations, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars easily overcomes any minor criticisms that can be raised against the slightly lacking level design and quality of life issues.

Very few indie games have quantity and quality that can match those of triple A titles, but Asterigos: Curse of the Stars definitely makes the cut. This is an outstanding first project from Acme Gamestudio and I can’t wait to see what’s next for them. What you’ll find here is a polished narrative-driven Souls-like adventure held back only by some frustrating design choices.

Are there already much better games of similar gameplay style out there? Absolutely, but Asterigos can still surprise you if you’re after something different and far less punishing.

A solid soulslike, with some cool ideas in the combat. Despite a few technical flaws and some less-than-original takes, Asterigos is still worth your time. [Issue#21, p.89]

The developers take a brutal and punishing game of survival and spin into an epic journey. Hilda won’t become a beaten and battered casualty of a brutal combat system, but rather a heroic figure that brings hope to a bleak land and its people, with personal stories that have a variety of endings for the Aphesians in this fully fleshed out world. A strong combat system that doesn’t punish players too harshly makes Asterigos: Curse of the Stars refreshing and approachable. Levelling too much can make bosses easy, and locations for quest items can be obtuse, but the game never feels unfair or unbalanced making Aphes a world worth exploring for the rich adventure that it tells.

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a game composed of two different genres and not fully committing to either. Doing so makes it not reach the potential I think the game could have had by sticking to simply one. Still, with fun combat and an explorative world, it is a solid experience. One that many gamers will be satisfied with but forget after the holiday season.

The scale of asterigos is impressive and no fillers to boot, even more impressive considering it's an indie game. Not since dragon age Inquisition have I seen this level of player choice and most importantly lasting hardcekt consequences es. It's amazing when a fictional setting achieves the feeling of responsive and alive. Before deciding if this game is right for you I recommend reading critic reviews and not user reviews, save for this one of course! ;) if you're still on the fence after checking a critic review or two, then definitely look for let's play YouTube video or streams from your fave streamers, that's what I would do had I not already pre-ordered the game and devoured a healthy amount of 24+ hours all achieved during Asterigos's early access period. It's a well made game that is addictive and hard to put down once one engages in its full game play loop. Expand

Apart from that, as far as I played, there is no variety of weapons and armor, which breaks the desire to play a little. However, the gameplay is based on souls like, but it's not exactly that kind of game. Finally, despite everything, it's a fun game to play. Expand

Bland visual presentation with lifeless textures and low draw distance; uninteresting writing.

    Thoughts-
Asterigos: Curse of the Stars could have been an excellent feel-good soulslike, but for that to happen – the story aspect really needed to hit home with its themes and writing. Acme Gamestudio has crafted a simple but highly customizable combat system along with enticing exploration, but those promising aspects are let down by plenty of technical problems as well. All in all, it’s a decent experience, but one that could end up being amazing if re-iterated upon.

Worth My Time: If you have time to spare.
Worth My Money: It's not a full price game, so sure.

What I Like: It has charm. The voice acting is pretty good, and because of this the characters are very likeable. Decent amount of options when it comes to playstyle and customization.

What I Dislike: Combat isn't the greatest. Overstays it's welcome.

How It Stacks Up: It's pretty mediocre. Not as good as games like Kena, but sure of a lot better than games like Godfall. It's charm is the best thing going for it. If it looks appealing to you, you will probably enjoy it. If it doesn't look like your type of game, it's not worth playing.

What Asterigos has going for it is that in general, its moment-to-moment mechanics are fun. The six weapon types its main character can use possess plenty of variety, and each is useful and enjoyable in its own way (I personally enjoyed the speed and flashiness of the dual daggers). While moments of gameplay seem to show the game's less-than-AAA budget, traversal and combat are all relatively enjoyable. Additionally, the environments are fairly top-notch - the Greek-influenced outdoor areas, in particular, are quite visually stunning, all things considered.

Where Asterigos stumbles, from my time with it, is that its story, characters and overarching narrative are all jarringly uninteresting and (ironically) soulless. Hilda, the protagonist, has a voice actress who seems entirely competent - however, most of the lines she was given seemingly lack effective translation, and are worded in this insufferably obtuse way. It is not difficult to surmise that the developers of Asterigos are not native English speakers, and that there was not enough effort put into proper translation.

Beyond Hilda and the other characters' awkwardly written lines, Asterigos also fails to create the kind of narrative in which you care about its characters. It doesn't feel as though there are any stakes, and no character left any sort of lasting impression on me whatsoever.

Asterigos chooses to ape the Souls games' obtuse design choices (i.e. the lack of a proper map or quest indicator). While Dark Souls managed to do this in a more fluid (albeit arguably still imperfect) manner in 2011, Asterigos does this in a way that feels purposefully frustrating. Missing important objectives felt infuriating, but there wasn't enough of an impetus for me to go back and replay the game to get the things I missed. It felt as though the developers chose to make things this way simply because 'Dark Souls did it,' rather than to serve any sort of purpose or convey something meaningful.

Despite all the unfavourable things I've stated about Asterigos, it is a perfectly good time. Its lower price (compared to other games on the market) seems mostly fair when considering its lack of polish, and it offers plenty for what you pay. It is mechanically sound, and most of its poor narrative can be glossed over in favour of simply enjoying the solid combat, opportunities for build variety, and overall above-par gameplay. If you are looking for a bite-sized action RPG with decent combat, Asterigos is a fine choice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really enjoy the game at fist, but the more I play more I hate about the game. 1. Horrible game navigation. Lost countless time. Can see it want to present a soul like map type, but the landscape isn’t very different make finding way harder than soul series’ game 2. bugy. Many game are bugy now , so I’m kinda use to it but this game enemy can stuck underground make you can’t hit them but they can hit you. There are countless of this kind of irritating bug , but some checkpoint can be far away. Which make to wasting time by walk a long way from check point just to hope the bug won’t happen again. 3. Terrible combat system/optimization. At first it seem to give you lots of play style, but you need lots of time to build a usable set. This make you could only grind to build another one mid game. This is mainly due to building a set you not only need level up, but also upgrade resources. However the drop rate of the resource is low and random. It combat system make enemy can combo you if the strike the first punch. This make the game become extremely hard if the game randomly give you tons of range enemy. I’m playing counter play style, but when I’m facing the crystal boss the rang enemy and tanky crystal enemy just can’t stop spawning. I hand to face 6 crystal enemy and 8 rang enemy in a little platform. This make the difficulty become extremely hard compare to other boss. And even I manage to win that enemy’s ability is ally’s ability is the same which makes you impossible to know which to doge which. However the boss have a one shot aoe that you need ally’s ability to avoid it , so you can’t just doge all. Moreover,It’s treasure system are just trash. It’s treasure give you punch of rabbis you don’t need and make you can’t upgrade your weapon and armor if you are unlucky. I’m a Taiwanese. I bought it to support the industry, but what I play just make me see how careless this studio is and feel bad about ever buying and plying this game. Expand
