If I had to choose a word to describe the storyline, it would be “condescending.” Time and again the game forces the storywriter’s values down the player’s throat. Time and again the game sends the players on a guilt trip for what the game forced them to do without giving them a second option. Time and again the game sends the players on a guilt trip for what the game forced them to do without giving them a second option. It’s like the game is telling us that what we feel is wrong despite it’s the game itself that made us feel that way.

The reason The Last of Us Part I was so well-received was because no one could say who among the characters was in the wrong or who was in the right. It was that excellent ambiguity between good and evil that intrigued the players. Some would think Joel did the right thing; some would say what Joel did was selfish. The Last of Us Part II, however, took this intricate and delicately woven storyline and changed it into brute, insensitive propaganda that constantly tries to “enlighten” the players. Before, there was no right and wrong answers; now, Neil Druckmann’s answer is the right answer and the game doesn’t even try to hide that. He mistakes himself for sitting on the moral high ground and thinks the players need to be educated. Naughty Dog should stay in its lane of a game company instead of being political, and stop trying to lecture the society of being kind to others when it can’t even care for its own employees to the extent that 70% of them in a department left before the release of the game.

This is an amazing story wrapped in a video game. For those of us who laud games as pieces of literature, this game is a must. I’m heartened to see that the majority of user reviews are positive. When we look back, say 10 years from now, many will begrudgingly admit that this game is a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm saying this as someone that pre-ordered the game, played it, finished it, and never touched it again. Lets get the good out of the way first, because this game has a lot more bad that it should and its a shame. 1. The graphics are some of the prettiest I've seen on the PS4. I have the first release of the console and the game still manages to run extremely well. 2. The gunplay is great. I enjoyed the gunplay in the first game, it having more weight than any third person shooter at the time. 3. The music. Gustavo Santaollala has always done a great job with the Last of Us series. From the disturbing and mysterious opening song of the first game to the soundtrack that plays while travelling Seattle. The music in this game is a must listen if you have the time and desire to. Now let's get on to the bad, and I'll be here for a while. Again, lets get the obvious out the way, the story. Where do I begin? Joel having his skull under par 2 hours into the game? The bland and uninteresting side characters that go along with Ellie and Abby? Abby's half of the plot being flawed and extremely boring? All of these being major problems with this game. Joel was an extremely beloved and cared for character in the first game, but in this, he is used as motivation in the plot and is in the rest of the game via flashbacks. A great and compelling story is driven off of the actions of a character. In this game, the characters are driven off of the story. Abby is the protagonist of the B plot. She is part of a group called the W.L.F. The Washington Liberation Force. Her half of the story consists of side missions and tedious quests for the conclusion of finding Ellie and almost beating her to death. She is such a shallow and terribly written character. Her motivations consist of: finding her ex in a renovated aquarium, then taking it up the ass. Helping a Seraphite girl get her arm cut off to save her, then having the same girl die of getting shot brutally. Then, taking a shemale to California to find the remaining group of Fireflies. Pacing is a super important part of any story, from slow dramatic pauses made to make the audience feel tense, like in Inglorious Basterds, to the fast paced story made to try to grab all the information as quick as possible, like Baby Driver. This simple thing can turn a game from super boring to super interesting. Ellie's part of the story is decent. Being the start of the game, the A plot, this is where a bunch of features need to be introduced. Ellie's story is mostly about the revenge plot of TLOU 2. This is where you have characters like Dina and Jesse. Jesse is so forgettable I had to google who the hell he was. He was a fling of Dina's. They were a thing, broke up, then Dina started dating Ellie. When Dina was dating Jesse, he made her pregnant, thus causing that plot. Ellie's camp is in a theater which funnily enough, the play that was supposed to be going on is on my birthday. That's not a complaint, I just thought it was cool. This is the half of the game where you can kill the pooches. Neil said that you were supposed to feel something every-time you killed a dog or it's owner, but I didn't feel anything. I don't know if it was because I'm a cold hearted bastard or it wasn't compelling enough, but there wasn't any emotional reality in those optional sections. The ending is incredibly disappointing. From the low stakes ending to the downer epilogue, it just was not as good as the last game's ending. Ellie loses two fingers in the fight, losing her only connection to Joel, being able to play the guitar. Except she didn't because of she is talented enough in music, she can learn to play it left handed. Overall, the game's story was terrible and it deserves a lower rating than what the paid off critics gave it. Overall, 3/10. Expand

Although the toxic fans will disagree, this game is poorly written. However, when you have a team who have pumped out amazing games before it, each with its own brilliant plot line and interactions, and then this festering turd is served up, it leaves a sour taste in the players mouth.

    Pros:

    - Graphics are beautiful, Naughty Dog show their true strengths in creating an amazing and unique environment
    - The story starts off strong
    - Little details help keep the player immersed in the world

    Cons:

    - Whatever strength the start of the game creates is immediately destroyed, not by the death of a beloved character, but by the introduction of a character which the player is forced to relate to
    - Poor writing unfortunately creates many plot holes which leaves players wondering just how on earth they all slipped past the whole team
    - Bugs. Oh my lord the bugs, I don't know whether I personally was unlucky to find so many bugs or if the game was filled to the brim with them but the amount of times the game decides to become a mess was laughable
    - Poor character development. A bunch of nobodies which no one cares about, an awkward sex scene which I'm unsure as to why it was included? (unless it's a main plot device, there's no point in having a scene in a game like that, keep it in your pants developers) and the poor treatment of both protagonists
    - She hulk. This is more of a personal thing and as such won't affect the rating, but christ. I have done my fair share of bodybuilding and if I could have She Hulks muscles by surviving off of scraps of food and probably no protein shakes, I'd be cutting down on supps. Granted she is made skinnier after certain events, but during an apocalypse, every one would be lean as hell unless they had access to Willy Wonkas chocolate factory.

Conclusion A game many of us have waited for us since the brilliant end of tlou's dlc has been a massive letdown. I'll hold on hope for some phenomenal dlc but the vanilla game? No thanks, I'll stick to stabbing myself with a knife, it's less painful.

I'd be hard pressed to think of a game featuring a story as engaging and masterfully told. Harsh but not dark, as there is beauty throughout the game, in how the protagonists care about their friends, interact with each other, relive fond memories and reflect on themselves when they are not busy dispatching their ennemies.

The Last of Us Part II is also technically flawless, with beautiful exterior environments and top notch exploration and combat.

But this game really shines in depicting characters with real depth and complexity. And, oh boy, it really succeeds in making the case that there are two sides to a story.

No game is perfect, but this one arguably comes darn close. I also give it a 10 to counteract the biggots who chose to bomb this game, either because they can't stomach how the plot unfolds or because they have issues with its inclusive storyline.

This game is REAL. Revenge is cliche, but guess what? That **** happens in life and no matter how cliche it is it doesn't stop happening. "Revenge is bad". People say that's an obvious point, but**** happens. Sometimes people you love die and oftentimes it's in the most inglorious ways. Sometimes you fall off some random ladder or get stabbed by some random mook you don't even know. This game is REAL. Revenge is cliche, but guess what? That **** happens in life and no matter how cliche it is it doesn't stop happening. "Revenge is bad". People say that's an obvious point, but apparently it's not because it happens every damn day. How long has it been since someone flipped you the bird while you're driving down the road, a week? Is that cliche? **** yes but it still happens. So the least you can do is ask why it happens over and over day after day and on every damn reddit I've seen in the past week.

What we can gain from games isn't a more sophisticated palette or recognition of our tirelessly exercised skill. We gain experience which influences how we behave and thought for how we can better live our lives. You don't get that from what you want to see. So quit your whining and LOOK for what you can gain from this experience.

The game is brilliant and bold. The people that didn't like the game didn't understand the message or didn't give it a straight shot, like for example if you didn't let game explain Abby's side it's and say her story is boring and you can;t relate to her, then you clearly didn't understand the message. The story is about both Abby and Ellie had their motivation to act as they did just like in any war there is not a good or bad side the same thing is here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright have seeing all the massive negativity thrown this games way, especially on the DAY of the launch, I was expecting to a moderate level of story structure with character development and story arcs to be about the same if not worse. I was surprisingly wrong and not that shocked at the massive amount of negativity thrown toward this games direction. It's on par with the DMC: Devil May Cry game, when that came out a lot of people were just hating on the game and blasting it online. Now onto the giant elephant in the room with this game, Joel's death. That seemed to solidify a lot of peoples hatred for this from the get go which, again, I can understand why they were made but I don't understand why they couldn't look past their anger. This game is very much different in it's story telling then any game I can think of, it feels more a kin to an actual novel then your standard story in a game and that I think is fantastic. It shows Naughty Dog is willing to elevate and evolve the way we tell stories in games which is something that has to change. Many games now-a-days fall victim to the obvious flow and point system. For example, whens the last time you played a game when you were in your enemies shoes? When's the last time you played a game where you were running around and gunning down the people shooting at you then next minute you are seeing their actual day to day operations and camps that have men, women, and children just doing their best to survive a horrible situation. Now that's not to say all you get are sunshine and rainbows on the other end, you do see their darker sides, like the toture and suffering they were inflicting on the captured Seraphites. Or their real lack of compassion toward anyone that is not fully with them, that's an encompassing story. There's an author, Sherillyn Kenyon, who has done this exact thing with certain characters in her stories, not afraid of showing them at their lowest points and their highest. To me this game elevated from where the original took off and just kept reaching for higher aspirations.

If you REALLY feel the story was bad, that's fine. But if your only major complaint is that Joel is dead and you have to play as his murderer and understand her side of the story. Then your opinion doesn't matter because what Naughty Dog did here was great and it should be respected as such.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay, graphics are 11/10. The level of detail is incredible. Now the story, personally I think it was ok, it wasn’t a masterpiece but it wasn’t a garbage as a lot of people say. As a play I felt like the more I advanced, the more Ellie suffers, and for me that’s what a lot of people hate, but that is life my friends. You can’t always think things through and when you realised where are you standing, it might be too late. Now about Abby, I never liked her, not ever after the time we play as her, and I hated when you have to fight Ellie as Abby. I also didn’t like what they did Tommy at the end, I felt it was unnecessary. Now the finale, I expected a lot worst, I don’t know what people expected, but for me, I didn’t want to kill Abby. It was like if Ellie killed her, she would truly lost her way and probably wouldn’t be able to get better(also I like Lev and it was like taking the last thing that he/she has). Also I understood it as a way of forgiving Joel. It was a way of finding the light. I liked that. She didn’t lose everything because she finally finds herself. Dina will forgive her. Trust me. I also think that the more attention you put to the little things the more you like the story but maybe that’s something more personal. Sorry for my English. It’s been a while since I have written in English Expand

    - game play is too old school, almost same as resident evil. it's very annoying to collect all these nonsense items all the time 1/10

    - story -15/10 completely ruined

the story was mediocre, purposeless, depressing and uninspiring. Why Debbie needs to go through all that trouble for only one medical box? Why Ellie loses her family, home, fingers and ability to play guitar for nothing ? The fans don't like to play as Debbie, the character who killed Joel.

the fans want to see the world of Ellie and Joel progressing. I expected the story to be much bigger with greater purpose. World changing. Ellie and Joel could have found a way to cure the infected and kill the virus. Rebuild the cities, or search for a place with no infection. Found the origin of the virus and what caused it.

Why is an inexperienced tv writer working on this game, and why did nobody at Naughty Dogs intervene with the writers catastrophic plot development?

Yes I hated it when Joel died, yes I hated playing as abby but the biggest problem for me was the ending.the lack of a choice is the absolute worst thing by not letting me decide if I wanted to spare abby or not it made the 2 things I disliked about the game that much worse maybe I would have spared abby or maybe not but l wasn't given the chance to figure it out on my own. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, just finished part 2... yes, I was crying like a little girl when Joel died during the FIRST 3 HOURS!! of the game (just fuken bananas). I really tried to give this game a chance, like I really wanted to find out where the story would take me since Joel had just been bludgeoned to death in front of Ellie (even now that sounds unbelievable)... So I did. I gave this game a chance. At first I was totally confused as to why I was playing as Abby???? Like, ok this is new, I'm supposed to build an emotional bond with this character I suppose (all the while thinking about Joel). I cried in this game, many times. I really wanted to love this game, and honestly I do. I think Part 2 is about growing up. Abby went from WLF back to her roots as a Firefly and found redemption by saving Lev. Ellie... she finally grew up out of the shadow of Joel (in the most cruel way possible), and she found peace with herself in the end. It was Joel's image that stopped her from killing Abby. I believe Ellie found peace and it cost her everything, her two guitar playing fingers, her girlfriend (with the big booty) and even a new baby. At least Tommy (sooooo happy he was alive, crippled by alive) will be happy to see Ellie. I guess, part 3 can still have Tommy, Dina, Ellie, and the baby. Maybe in part 3 we play as the baby, we can spend countless hours crawling on the floor and chewing on plastic toys.. in Santa Barbara of course.
In all honestly, coming from a true TLOU fan, and not expecting anything from part 2 but a continuation of Joel and Ellie's adventures... I give this game a solid 7 out of 10. I don't think there should be a part 3, if there is a part 3 don't even bring Ellie into the game, she might end up getting killed off by the writers. Alright, that's about all I have to say about that.
Oh, one last thing... after playing this game and finishing the game, The Last of Us part 2, I must say this... why couldn't have Joel just stayed home?????? Like, just NOT get killed in this story? The game could have been about Ellie, her pregnant girlfriend, Tommy and his hunting skills, Maria and managing the camp, literally anything else could have been a great main story, heck even Abby searching for Joel and finding redemption by saving Lev and his sister WITHOUT killing Joel off. That is the one thing I hate about this game, JOEL DID NOT HAVE TO GET KILLED to make a great story! He could have been out of town on a mission or just sick in bed recovering from a broken leg, or anything else. Anyway, that is why this game is a 7 out of 10. And now I go to sleep with a heavy heart.. may Joel Miller rest in peace.

I really enjoyed it. I don't understand the amount of hate this game got. These people created these characters and it's up to them and their vision to decide their fate. now although I can see where most of the criticism is coming from, I don't agree with the way it was delivered. just relax, enjoy the game and let it go.

I had to register and make my first review. This is the best experience I´ve had related to video games. Everything is taken to an unexpected level. The game play is amazing, graphics are beautiful and the story is harsh and heavy. If there ever was a game destined to get a 10, this is the one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for this game more than 5 years. I played the first part maybe 14-15 times. It was the second game I ever pre-ordered. I only watched few trailers not to spoil the game too much. I spent 24h to finish the game, I think.

Sooo... (I'll put some spoilers at the very end of the review to explain what I didn't like about this game. It's up to you to decide if you wanna read them. I'll also talk about relations between characters so there might be few minor spoilers down here. Just in case I warned you. Don't read it you haven't played The last of us 1 tho)

Gameplay is fluid, fast, smooth and responsive. It's same as it used to be but improved. New infected and new organisations/cult are pretty damn neat. Graphics it's top notch, I mean, it's Naughty Dog.
There are few moments in the story where Ellie is just a badass but sadly the pros end here.

The game is simply bad, the characters aren't as they used to be. Of course that is normal but the story doesn't even try to show us how they changed due to what happened in the beginning. The first game built tension in an interesting and fascinating way. Ellie used to be... well a kid. She was curious at first, fascinated by how the world looks outside of the Boston QZ. Joel was basically a man who had no reason to live, didn't care about people. He was closed and cold. The first game shows perfectly how they changed. How Ellie was touched by what happened during the winter. How Joel opened up to her and that was simply beautiful.
New characters aren't interesting at all. Most of them don't have time to shine and that's just disappointing.

I'll just say that first half of the game is great. If you decide to buy it you'll understand why. It has a lot to do with the playable character.

Before I finish this with review with big spoilers I just wanted to say that. yes. I did not expect that the characters hugged each other kissed and lived happily ever after. In the first game I expected Joel and Ellie to save the humanity but the ending we got was even better. It was a "good bad ending".
Now the ending of the second game... It's just bad. Badly written.

    *Big spoilers ahead*

So yea... Joel dies at the very beginning. They disrespected him like he was not important at all but I get that it was essential for Ellie to go after Abby.
Now... Abby. I think this is the worst character in any game Naughty Dog has ever made. The problem is, you play as her like 65% of the game. She's not awful cause she killed Joel. She has no character. She's just poorly written. There was only 1 time when she said something that made me like her. I officially started to dislike her when Owen cheated on Mel with Abby and oh my god that sex scene... Just no. That wasn't funny at all.
She was literally happy when she found out Dina was pregnant before she tried killing her. Thanks god for Lev. He and his sister along Dina were the only characters I actually liked and found interesting.
Now comes the parts after Seattle. Tommy cared about Ellie almost as much as Joel did. And he just gets pissed at her cause she didn't keep her promise? That's not how Tommy would act.
The ending is just awful. Ellie let's Abby go, we don't know if she finds Fireflies at the end. Ellie probably lost Dina and JJ.
One thing that I liked at the end is Ellie realising how much she lost cause of vengeance. The scene where she couldn't play her guitar anymore.

Some people think this game changed to pander to some people. I honestly don't think so. I support the LGBTQ+ community. I AM a part of it but trust me no one wanted this except the author of the game.
I think they were more interested in designing Abby's arm muscles than developing an interesting plot and story. Seriously even if Ellie or Joel died at the end (let's just imagine it went this way) with good writing, well planned story, interesting plot and characters it could've worked. How many games are out there where the protagonist dies at the end or generally games with bad ending? A lot, and a lot of this games are considered good. Not every game needs a happy ending. But every games needs a good written ending.

So, I think that's all. For huge fans like me, no I don't recommend this game. Watch it on youtube or wait til it's way cheaper like £15 and then try it.
To be honest I'm personally not disappointed but heartbroken. The first game meant a lot to me. And I'm serious a lot. It's still my n.1 game of all times I'm just gonna either pretend the second part didn't happen or hope the third part will fix everything. If there's ever gonna be a third part...

In the end, I respect people who like and dislike the game. Everyone has their own taste and a matter of being a good game and a bad one is simply subjective.

I don't think there's a game like the Last of Us Part 2 which has divided the people like it did. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann made this game in this way to provoke people to argue over video games and to make even more money, I honestly believe this man made the first one with all his heart and soul, hoping to create a masterpiece, and that he did. But when he saw that he could make a **** ton of money by making a divisive game he could make people talk about it and sell more copies. In the spirit of this game lies literal lies, deceit and dishonesty. We were given trailers with Ellie and Joel, replaced with the asian guy, I cant even remember people's names from this game, that's how bad this game was. I'll even go as far as to say that this game was unforgettable but forgettable in a way, the story is trash with some trash plot twists and shock value. Joel literally dies in the first hour. Making Abby the worst villian of any video game ever. Later on a mexican guy spits on his caved in skull disrespecting him all that jazz. I wanna go on a rant about this game after 2 months but find it unnessecary to do so. This game checked off many of the current SJW check-boxes also, gay female main character, check, a strong independent woman as a villain, check, a PREGNANT woman going into battle with literal psychopaths, check, man weak women strong, check. I bought this game thinking I'd be playing this **** over and over like the first one but, was immediately disappointed when the credits rolled. And the ending, ohhh that **** was SOO DUMB. Imagine going on a killing spree, killing everybody even remotely close to Abby, and in the end not killing Abby because "dig two graves if you want revenge and revenge bad" clichés. It was the most aggrevating ending to a video game ever. They better not make TLOU3 or they'll go bankrupt. This was their shot, ND took it, missed it. Bury this game with the other "woke" games. $60 down the drain. Trash. Go play the first one it's literally the same game as this one but with better story. Expand

It feels like the best game of 2020 so far, maybe until PES or FIFA comes out. But actually i felt this sequel does not live up to the title. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t fully comprehend all the hate this game received from users (or streamers). **** amazing. The whole team did a great job. Visuals, gameplay, soundtrack, acting and even storyline. Haters are just too attached to a character. We all know he had it coming. Joel is not a hero nor a villain. The way he died and for it to happen almost at the beginning of the game is what triggered the hate most. And then you have to play Abby. It’s a post apocalyptic world. People react based on the circumstances and it doesn’t make them an evil person as whole. It’s not always black and white. I love it. Even the situation of Ellie eventually being alone at the end. Heartbreakingly beautiful. But still, the first game was **** epic which is like the best game ever so it’s a 10 for me. So I’m giving part II a 9.5 just because Joel and Ellie forever. Expand

For me, it got me to feel so many things. I really thought I was going to hate the game. SPOILERS When you get to play as Abby, the game feels unbearably long, because of the tension in the theater you just left. All I could think of was getting back there to figure out what the hell happens. Plus you hate Abby. When they tried to get me to feel for her i wasnt biting. I did not care about her, or her past, or her relationships. She killed Joel. But I thank God they did draw it out, because that gave me the time I needed to humanize and forgive Abby. They got me so late in Abby's story. When I saw what she went through to help those Scars, I didnt see a villian anymore. I saw an actual person with a good heart. When her friend scolds her and tells her shes not a good person and Abby breaks down because she can't seem to forgive herself either. She wasnt happy with what she did but I think she was looking for peace just like Ellie was trying to do when she went back for Abby. The game made me go from this completely one-sided blind hatred, to compassion and wanting nothing but the best for her. I WRESTLED WITH MYSELF pushing the attack buttons on the final scene. That was unlike anything I have ever experienced, and though the pacing mightve been screwy to some, I could not imagine any other way to do it. The way it moved me up and down gets a Fat 10 outta 10. Gameplay super intense and fun too but I just wanted to talk about the story lol. Expand

It was one of the first good story driven games. Even tho the story was simple, there were moments that made it more than what it was. Part 2 destroys everything the first game tried to build. The characters aren’t even half as interesting as the ones in the first game. The story is all over the place, the pacing is off, overall from a storytelling perspective it seemed really lazy. As shallow as the god of war games were, they made a better revenge story than the last of us part 2, and as bad as Spiderman 3 was as a movie it had a better revenge/forgive story. The way they tried to deliver the story in this one was just push the player and use shock value moments. They try to make Joel the bad guy and humanize Abby and make it seem as if it was her revenge story, when her half of the game just pushed the idea of her being a complete monster aside from petting dogs and saving Lev. Overall i think the game is still good and worth playing through the bad parts just to get to the ending. Is part 2's ending as satisfying as part 1 ? No. But i think its still good Expand

I finished TLOU 1 twice and loved it. Now i just finished TLOU2 and i think it's a very worthy successor and doesn't deserve the zero's. Most of the critisism is because of 'that one narrative choice' and the amount of SJW stuff in the game. They put a lot of effort in the game and it is one hell of a ride. While not a masterpiece maybe, it's definately not far from it. Going to finish itI finished TLOU 1 twice and loved it. I'm a fan of the first part, but not this one. I played it til end and I have the right to say I did not like it, at all. If you liked it, I don't care. The STORY IS TRASH AND POINTLESS . NEIL DRUCKMANN is not a good director/writer. I'm sorry but that's the TRUTH. Better play Ghost of Tsushima than this piece of hot garbage.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
