The story is ok, but the ending just renders the entire thing a moot point, it's pointless and has no pay off.

The ending should have been Ellie kills Abby and she crawls up to the shore and lays down breathing heavily, with "All Gone (Aftermath)" from the first game playing, and the screen fades to black with one last breath.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, I expected a far better story, considering all the time that they put into it. The worst part is, some of it isn't too bad. Unfortunately the parts that are bad, are just terrible. In the first game, we're shown just how careful Joey is, and by extension, Tommy. There os no excuse for how they ended up in such a scenario. Maybe if Abby had been the one to save them, then they would have more reason to trust them.
I will say that the graphics and gameplay are sublime, in my opinion, but in a story driven game, those can only get you so far. If you're just here for some mindless action, and aren't at all interested in the story, this game could probably be an 8 out of 10, but if like most of us, you wanted story, 4 is the best I can give.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A 7 year in the making fan fiction based off the first game. The characters keep no traits from the previous game. Joel's death is an insult to the character established previously, likewise for Tommy.

At the end of the game it kept me contemplating on what i actually achieved, what new story got unraveled, and whether i actually care for more. As far as I'm concerned Ellie and Joel's story ended in the first game.

Playing as Joel's killer is also cringy. Ellie knows killing is wrong and expresses disgust in her actions when killing human beings, often on the verge of vomiting. Abby is just evil, has no remorse for her actions, no humanity and no empathy.

The whole issue of infected is not touched upon in the slightest. Infected are just trash mobs to slow down your pace while offering no significance to the plot. Ellies immunity also has no relevance except for the two times she uses it to her advantage.

    ----

Credit where credit is due, the graphics, animation and gameplay is flawless although repetitive, but that's not a problem.
+ Abby's toolset is more enjoyable to play especially with her brute force. Punching infected to death was highly satisfying, although questionable with regards to safety.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The low score is mostly from disappointment along with the poor story. I don't mind the bleakness or the revenge aspects. Infact, I like the fact that Ellie sees red after the infamous death scene. But this could have been something so much greater, and Druckmann decided to bait and switch and make statements that fall flat. Other than that, the graphics are phenomenal. Sound design is great, music is fantastic and most technical aspects are on par with anything else out there. Not only is this is the end of the console's life cycle but Naughty Dog had all the time in the world and Sony's blank check to get this done now they originally imagined, so I'd expect it be at this level. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it is almost exactly the same as the first, which isn't necessarily a fault, but it's not great either. But for a narrative driven game, they should have done better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hard truth is, ND is not progressive, they use the suffering of minorities to create further divide for marketing. Obviously the story was bad, the gameplay was bland and unoriginal, and the graphics were great, but you’ll find this in many other reviews. For me, I was also very disappointed in this game that was being announced as “overly progressive”. Black representation was poor (every black character was a villain/opponent that got brutally murdered by white woman, and they had zero redeeming qualities, it honestly looked racist), asian characters were an obstacle to the white characters that resulted in problems arising, or completely tossed away with zero care like Jessie who dies and is never brought up again (not to mention Ellie previously cracking a joke that she’s not interested in him because he’s asian), the back story to the trans character Lev was that he changed his gender from female to male because he was opposed to marrying a cult elder, not because he was uncomfortable with his body. And the lesbian relationship between Ellie and Dina felt like a bad, early 2000’s TV drama where neither of them could be happy. Naughty Dog has a poor history of racial issues in games. With a team led by a majority of straight, white cis-males, them cashing in on causing divide with progressive issues they don’t understand is disgusting. When the leaks happened, and everyone was making disgusting remarks about the trans community because they thought Abby was transgender (as ND randomly decided to make her masculine, and had announced a trans character but didn’t name who), both Neil Druckmann and ND refused to shut down the hate by telling people they were wrong, and instead waited until after the game released for a “Gotcha bigots, you were wrong the whole time!” moment, thanks Neil, the LGBT community appreciates you putting your “art” over the suffering of minorities. If people are under the impression Abby is trans, and she killed the previous games protagonist, people were going to hate on her for any reason they could find. I’m currently under the impression now that those leaks were from ND themselves and it was all just a marketing stint, clearly hasn’t effected the sales. A progressive company doesn’t throw away a lead female writer two years into a project. A progressive company doesn’t cover up sexual assault/harassment from their employees and throw NDA’s around monthly. A progressive company doesn’t treat their workers like crap resulting in layoffs and people leaving on a weekly basis. A progressive company doesn’t cast a white woman as a black woman (Laura Bailey in UC4) without telling the actress, resulting in her getting the negative response for taking the role. And most assurable, a progressive company doesn’t make a game like TLOU 2 that insults the very people it’s meant to be “pandering” to. But don’t get me wrong, ND is neither progressive nor conservative, they’re just terrible people cashing in on our outrage, thanks to the assumption this is the only game with LGBT characters. If you want a game with good LGBT representation (many exist), I recommend Life is Strange and Celeste, much better games with much better stories. And lastly, the LGBT community, people of different races, and all minorities just want one thing, acceptance. The Last of Us Part 2 doesn’t offer that, it just shows you how white straight men view us, as disposable pawns. 1/10, gets a single point for graphics, (although the lighting in dark areas could have been improved, characters lit up like glow sticks). The story though doesn't make much sense: Characters don't behave like we know them and make choices that every fan of the game would frown upon. The game also made a false advertising over who we play as. Frankly, we play the second half of the game as a character that is hated by the player. The also try to tell us she's a great characters by showing her pet dogs and be an animal lover.
If you only knew what she did at the beginning of the game you'd hate her. Despise her.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my first review for a game I am about to give. Please don't flag me as a bot Metacritic because of this. I played the game on Survivor difficulty and it took me 33 hours 41 minutes to complete. I feel like I have earned the opinion I am about to give.

Story(Spoilers): I started the game off vaguely hearing of the spoilers, knowing what happens to Joel, but not how it happens. That was the extend of my previous knowledge. I noticed friction between Joel and Ellie. I knew something went down between them where Ellie was not happy and Joel was slightly heart broken. The acting in this game was very good when you can convey such emotion in your face without needing to say words. I was broken inside after seeing what happened to Joel. Every person who saw this had the same heartbroken and shocked reaction that I did. We all hated Abby at that moment, but I'll get to talking about her later. Ellie and Dina had a sweet relationship in this game. There were some genuinely nice moments they had together. I didn't like how in the first 10 minutes of playing the game I was reminded 4 times of Ellie being a lesbian through a bigot and other comments made. Having genuine sweet moments of people in love holds more weight than making them feel like the world doesn't agree with their choices. Ellie is out for revenge and the story progresses rather well through the days leading up to finding Abby. I was forced to kill dogs in this game, which I wasn't happy to do, but I do understand in war these things happen. I love my current dog(Apollo) dearly and understand how it can affect people. When we finally catch up with Abby she is as evil as ever. We know why she wants to kill Ellie with all the terrible things Ellie did to Abby's friends. We just don't care. Ellie is who we saved from that hospital because of the love Joel had for her. We understand we doomed the world, but we just don't care. The best line from Abby's point of view was when we had the flashback to the day of the surgery. Abby's father is asked if it was his daughter could he do the same thing. Knowing his daughter would die on the table. Her father never answered the question directly. He just danced around it. When the time came where we had to play as Abby the entire community had the same reaction, disgust. We don't care who is was leading up to that point. The only question I had was how she because so ripped though. To get that built as a guy it takes consuming massive amounts of high protein/low carb foods. For a woman it is even harder to achieve. How angry would you be when there are people starving out in the world and some one decides to eat 4 times what others do just to maintain that build? I mean doesn't she have to go on missions? She would need to reserve possibly 8 hours a day to maintain that. A perfect example is the end of the game when she losing all that muscle from starvation. Anyways, at first I thought it might be a mission or two where I would play as Abby, but when I noticed the days progressing the same way as Ellie's story line I was not happy. I don't care if she throws balls for dogs or befriends some scars. When Abby's long portion finally ended we finally get a nice part where Ellie is second mother to Dina's baby. It's nice has Ellie seems happy at first, but than you realize that she suffers from PTSD. Tommy shows up and gives information on how to find Abby to finish things finally. I can best describe Ellie as a soldier who just never left the war. She is so damaged inside that she doesn't know how to live in peace. This happens to people all the time. Ellie leaves her for one last mission and after finding Abby, rescuing Abby, than forgiving Abby for killing Joel she heads back to an empty house. No Dina and no baby. The final scene shows the last conversation Ellie and Joel had before that terrible chain of events happened.

What started as a review ended up being a therapeutic release of my feeling towards this game. Does this game deserve a 10/10 by the scared game critics who don't want to lose the influence of Naughty Dog? No way. Does it deserve a 0/10? Not that either. If Abby was turned into a character more similar to Owen than I would have been happy. She would have seen the flaws in constantly being at war and just got tired of it. She sides with Ellie in a fight against a new enemy that has Joel die tragically trying to save Abby from this other threat. I didn't go into the game wanting to hate Abby. Naughty Dog did it for me and tried so hard to change my mind, but never succeeded.

The failure was not in the graphics, acting or game play. It was in the story. It had potential, but Naughty Dog dropped the ball and it rolled under the fence. Leaving us all as sad puppies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I go too far, I must admit that TLOU2 is a
technical marvel. The visuals are stunning, the soundscape and voice acting is incredible. The gameplay is passable (as to be expected of a story based game) and is very similar to TLOU. However, the big problem with this game is the story. Not a single character in this entire story is likeable (except maybe Lev), which is a big problem if you’re spending 30 hours with them. The deaths are weak and unsatisfying, with the majority of characters (such as Joel, who’s death was executed terribly) being given a mediocre send off done for shock value and easy plot development. The plot itself is incredibly generic, with the barely explored theme of “revenge is bad” being beaten into you with the complexity and subtlety of a baseball bat. Throw in having to play as Abby (who they desperately try to make sympathetic despite brutally beating Joel to death TEN HOURS of gameplay before) for 12 hours, and a good chunk of the game simply isn’t fun. And of course, we can’t forget about the atrocious ending. After sacrificing everything and killing hundreds of innocent people, Ellie ends up letting Abby get away, leaving us thinking, “that’s it?” Overall, the game story is just like the ending, an unsatisfying waste of enormous potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the immensely great gameplay that builds off the first game, along with a stunning visual setting in Seattle, I can't ignore the fundamental flaws of the story itself. It isnt the gay relationship of Ellie and Dina, nor the buff Abby. My main problem is the treatment of the characters such as Joel. Unlike many, my problem isnt the death of this beloved character but rather the timing, execution, and logic of it. Joel, the strong, untrusting protagonist of the first game, falls victim to Abby by giving out his name. They do this only 2 hours into the game to set up their revenge plot. The game tries to be philosophical but fails to do so. Then, the game forces us to play as his murderer for half the game and attempts to make us sympathize with her. Despite many not doing so, the ending doesnt even allow Ellie to exact her revenge, not even by the will of the player. Giving a choice to do so would've not only made it more immersive but made more sense considering Ellie murdered so many of Abby's friends in pursuit of justice for Joel. It's a convoluted story with beautiful gameplay, but, in my opinion, a game like the Last of Us should be more about narrative than gameplay. I just wish this game lived up to the success of the first game. Expand

The Last Of Us 1 is a marvel, one of my favorite games of all time. The sequel spit on it and forced us to be in agony as we struggled through to the end looking for resolution. My problems have nothing to do with gender or sexuality and everything to do with story and the destruction of beloved characters. I hope some day I can get this feeling out of my chest and view the sequel as a horrible fan fiction. Until then I'll continue to find solace knowing that my fellow gamers are grieving just as hard. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I do not understand about this game is the logic behind the actions of the characters. Let's take Abigail as an example. Her father was killed by Joel in the first game. Her reaction was to take revenge on Joel for murdering her father. Due to the post apocalyptic nature of the game there is no society, ergo it can be argued that what Abigail did to Joel is a logical reaction to what Joel did to her (indirectly via killing her father). The game goes on and you see the characters interact with each other in various ways. The voice acting is top notch. The visuals/gameplay are all top tier. I will not be talking about the technical aspect of the game any further since that point has been stated many times by thousands of people. My gripe is with the story and how the characters act. Let's talk about Mel first. Mel is a pregnant woman who chooses to go to the front lines during the part of the game where you control Abigail. Why? You are pregnant?????? You can physically see her huge belly. What kind of backwards thinking is this? Not only are you endangering your life and the life of your unborn child, you are risking the life of Abigail and Emanuel (and the dog too). This is not the type of game that can allow this type of logic. This is not metal gear. During this mission they get into a car crash, fire fight with the cult, and fighting the mushroom zombies. At one point in order to get through an area Abigail boosts up Mel and you see her slamming her belly onto the metal thing she is trying to climb. You can hear it. I do not understand how this works? The other, and last, thing I want to talk about is Ellie's mission to get revenge and kill Abigail. Fueled by rage Ellie goes on a crusade and proceeds to kill many people, including the pregnant Mel and her unborn child, in order to reach Abigail and end it. This is the part that i do not understand. Ellie shows mercy and tells Abigail to leave. The moment this happened all the lives Ellie took were for nothing. Their deaths meant nothing. Their deaths were as insignificant as the deaths of bugs hitting your windshield. What was the character thinking at the time? Hopped up on all that adrenaline from losing two of her fingers (which is scientifically impossible for a human to do but I digress) how can she make the choice to leave Abigail after all that. I understand that games are subjective not objective, that means what i do not necessarily like someone else will. Yet I find that there is a line somewhere that separates subjectivity from objectivity. Things like plot holes and continuity errors should be objective not subjective. I find how Ellie acts to be illogical. It is true, hatred only begets hatred. And while crude the term "Revenge Bad" is inherently true. The problem lies with how the characters decided to act on these statements. Abigail disregarded the reason that Joel killed her father and acted on her hatred. After Ellie is sparred by Abigail, she makes a conscience decision to act on her hatred and try to kill Abigail. If Ellie wanted for the cycle of hatred to end then she should have stayed with Dina at the farm. The moment she went out of her way to find Abigail, killing anyone and anything that stands in her way, she should have had the resolve to see what she was doing through. Imagine john wick killing all those henchmen and goons and after reaching the guy that killed his dog he just spares him. That feels off doesn't it? Imagine Kratos reaching Zeus, after all the killing that he did, and he just leaves. This is what happened in the last of us part 2, Ellie leaves Abigail free. This is not the same girl from the first game. It is disappointing. if you enjoyed the game then I am glad that you had fun. I just wish that I did too. Expand

Ellie throughout her journey she has experience nothing but loss and suffering. First you have Joel dying in the first two hours of the game, got her friend killed, and she lost her fingers which makes it so Ellie was unable to play guitar which is the closest thing she has to Joel

Meanwhile, you have Abby being able to get away with everything without any consequences.

In the first game, during the journey Ellie and Joel relationship gets deeper and deeper, but here in this game it's just a **** you Ellie journey.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

When "The Last of Us" said it was more important to save a single girl in front of eyes than the lives of countless people who could save in the future, it was a courageous ending to take a moral dilemma. The sequel, however, does not understand that revenge is circulated among everyone except the production team, and therefore only the production team can purify the world with special aesthetic and moral judgment. With such an attitude, they insult, belies, manipulates, and preaches those who truly loved the main characters of the previous series. The bottom line is doctrinaire. Even that is nothing more than throwing gamers into the mire of moral relativism. The sequel crossed the line at a time when gamers direct Abby and force the players to learn a lesson.  Expand

In this case I’ve come here to give a real review because I believe in this case the fans need to be heard loud and clear and in mass. I absolutely loved the first installment of this series, it was quite literally the best game I have ever played. I’ve spent hundreds of hours replaying the original and the remaster and It’s never made me feel like its a chore. The character development and character relationships were incredible, the story was absolutely spectacular and when I found out there was going to be a Part II I was over the moon. I heard the leaks and the here say about how this wasn’t going to compare to the first and to expect something much different. I kept an open mind and began playing after work on launch day. After just about 2 hours I didn’t even want to go any farther. I just wanted to turn my PS4 off and return the game. I took a day to think if I wanted to see if it got any better, and as you could have guessed it didn’t. In all my years of gaming I haven’t seen something with so much potential just fall so flat. This game is dead on arrival and there are so many plot holes I was in disbelief that the studio released it. I couldn’t care less if the main characters were gay, straight, black, brown or purple. I loved Ellie’s character in the first game, and the people saying people only hate the game because of the gay protagonist is just untrue. Where is the personalities and traits of the characters that were already developed because they were nowhere to be seen? This game has absolutely nothing of value in it, it’s utterly garbage. I’ve waisted 60 dollars on something that I’ll never get back not to mention the time finishing the game for the sake of finishing it just so I would have ground to stand on to write this review. Naughty Dog...... We were expecting so much from you and you’ve let your fans down as much as you possibly could. Between the terrible AI, horrible story, terrible attempts to make characters you’re suppose to end up liking relatable, and the pathetic attempt at shock value to justify the terrible writing is despicable. In my mind this game doesn’t exist and the first installment is just a fantastic one off that will leave me wondering what ever became of the Joel and Ellie we all came to know and love and probably actually connected with. Save yourselves the money and don’t line the studios pockets because I’m 99% sure you will regret it. If you want watch your favorite YouTuber or streamer play it. In numbers out voices can be heard, hit them were it hurts...... in the pocket book. Expand

The Graphics, Music, Audio, And mainly the scene with Ellie singing and playing Take on Me, Those are the only good things about this game and that's why it deserves at least a 1. Why force the player to play as the "Villain" she was the villain no matter what, you can say she was justified but if you asked every parent in the world 99.9% of parents wouldn't sacrifice someone who is basically a child to them mainly after already losing a child. And then you go even further and not even give us a choice to do something like Kill or show mercy to Abby at the end... How dare you try to make us Sympathies with the Murderer of a man only trying to protect his "daughter" and the main character of the first game then not even let us choose if we spare her life or not. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game and honestly felt disappointed. The best part of the game was the flashbacks, and the open area section in the beginning with Ellie. I enjoyed the dialogue and it reminded me of the first game. I hated Abby and did not care for her story in the slightest. Didn’t feel sympathetic towards her or her bland friends(looking at you Owen) and it was a 10 hour section I just wanted to be over to get back to Ellie. I think it would’ve been a better story if Ellie met Lev somehow and discovered he was being hunted because he got bit by an infected but turns out to be immune. Abby discovers it when Lev and Yara saved her and goes to get Lev to somehow get the cure again which Ellie didn’t provide. Ellie bonds with Lev and Yara and replace her in all of Abby’s sections. Abby will continue to hunt down Lev with friends forcing Ellie to kill everyone just like Joel did and Ellie will find meaning in why Joel did what he did and forgive him. And you get to kill Abby! I think the games story could’ve been done better as it didn’t hit the emotional beats at all and felt awkward and clunky at times. Music was good but felt lacking somehow. I honestly don’t think game has good iconic moments like Tess dying or Bill discovering his partner died or Henry killing Sam. It had moments like Abby discovering her friends died or Ellie seeing Jesse died or Joel being beaten to death which made no sense for his character for trusting them. All the moments are just shock value with no emotional weight behind it. There wasn’t a point to the plot or a good resolution towards it. WE GET IT REVENGE IS BAD. You’ll lose everything if you get revenge. Then why did Ellie lose everything and Abby gets to have something for killing Joel. Ellie lost her fingers, Dina, JJ, the baby, Jesse, relationship with Tommy is ruined, and can’t have a resolution with Joel and doesn’t get to kill Abby while ABBY A CHARACTER WE HATE, gets to live, gets to save Lev and gets to go back to the fireflies. How could you do this to Ellie a beloved character. This was suppose to be her story. I felt so disappointed in the ending and felt like the story should’ve gone in so many other possible directions. Give the players choices or at least don’t alienate them or make them play as a character they will automatically hate. Story writers need to stop subverting expectation for the sake of subverting expectation. You only do that if it fits the narrative and flows well otherwise you’ll get a crappy story like The Last Jedi, Game of Thrones season 8, and The Last of Us Pt II. Expand

No me importa lo que digan, su historia es patética, voy a seguir jugando a la primera entrega y hacer de cuenta que the last of us 2 nunca existió, abby nunca existió y ese enfermero npc

Did you enjoy the smart, careful, pragmatic, untrusting hero of the first game? Well I hope you enjoy that character being dumb, careless, gullible, and beaten to death with a 9 iron within the first few hours of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 7 long years, a couple insane months, yet I held hope. I thought hard and realized that I need to give this game a chance. I do believe that the graphics of this game were mesmerizing, even the most simple animations and lighting were very impressive, the dodge button was also a delight about 1/3 of the time. The gameplay besides that is SO BAD. The first time Ellie jumped, I was astonished. Like, how can Ellie overpower grown men but can only hop like 2 inches, who knows. Everything else is basically exactly the same. The gameplay areas are a little more fluid but the gun play is embarrassing, slowing everything down in the process. The characters were so boring that I didn’t even remember half of their names. THEN THEY REMOVE THE PUZZLES (they should have done the opposite and made them more challenging. Maybe take advantage of that hilarious rope LMFAO so impressed). Joel dying is all good and well, but really, wtf? Need I say more regarding him? No, everyone agrees. Playing as a new character that I don’t care about, okay I’ll do that I guess, but SHE NEVER DIES like dude what. Everything was for nothing, now there is going to be the last of us 3 and it will be embarrassing. All and all the good was overshadowed by the constant feelings of either anger or boredom, oh ya did I mention the game is insanely boring? Should have been a 10-15 hour game which is disgusting. Also at no point did I dislike this game due to the SJW agenda, I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me but what does bother me is journalists saying that is why people dislike the game. It isn’t, that is probably 5% of people who hate it. I only hope DLC comes out so NOBODY buys it. How many people buy the DLC will be the deciding factor on how the community actually feels about this game. Sorry not sorry. Wasted time, wasted money, hopefully I can return this junk of garbage somehow. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
