I think no-one can argue the game has great graphics and gameplay but isn't that to be expected nowadays? Especially from AAA game companies, anything less would be strange. Obviously the story is the major issue here. People are getting tired of having politically correct social justice crammed down our throats. Entertain us. Don't scar is like school does nowadays

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Playing this game is interesting, but not necessarily in a good way. The gameplay is pretty decent overall, I like the new things they added in for building weapons and upgrading them and the dodge button when people attack you etc... the graphics are nice as well on ps4 slim the frame rate drops significantly though that's a downer. Now the story.....this is where they could have done a better job. The first game was all about the story and the relationship that Joel and Ellie had together overcoming the apocalyptic world that they live in. The story on the first game was phenomenal. Killing Joel off they way they did not only pissed me off and I'm sure pissed a lot of people off, it gave the game a sour taste in my mouth for a long while. The push in the sexuality in this game is also rediculous. It makes the story dull and less interesting because it takes away from the post apocalyptic world that the story takes place in just like the walking dead has done in the later seasons. I understand the point they were trying to make with this game but they could have done a way better job doing it. I dont think I'm going to reccomend this game to anyone. It was put together poorly and executed in a very extreme fashion. This game wasn't enjoyable to play. It was a painful experience. Do better next time Naughty Dog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline was basically all for nothing. You spent 20+ hours killing everyone that tried to stop you only to spare the one that made you go on a killing spree in the first place. The gameplay is basically the same, they did improve it with the whole jump button thing and the tall grass and all that but not what you would expect from a game they have had 6 years to work on. The enemies was slightly better, i liked how the humans you kill actually made interactions when it comes to tracking you down and try to kill you. The new infected the Shambler was just a downgrade, it was slow and goofy looking and very easy to kill making it less threataning compared to the clickers and stalkers. They tricked the fans thinking a loving character who was playable in the first part was actually going to come back, he did for about 20 minutes after getting killed by a person who is playable character who he saved 10 minutes earlier, making the players hate her already. I feel like they forgot what made us like the characters in the first game. Joel and Tommy were people who have survived long enough to understand never to trust a stranger ever, Joel went through being a hunter, smugglar yet he still trusted armed strangers who he never would from what we learned in the first game. Tommy giving them his name to the people who wanted to kill his brother which is just stupid and written poorly. Why did you not make two different campaign, one for Ellie and one for Abby, instead you threw both of them in one and had to jump from character to character which was very frustating making the player unintrested the fact that you had to make them play Abby moments before she kills Joel. It would be better to understand the characters instead of switching them both nor forcing you to play characters they dont like and if they did and wanted to know more they play her side of the story showing only her perspective. Sorry for the bad english, i loved the first game and after playing the second part i wished that i just looked at the spoilers because that would have saved me 60 dollars and 20 hours that i would find something to do more enjoyable then playing the thrash that is this game. Thanks for wasting my time. Expand

One of the best games visually. Actors have done a great job considering the weak storytelling. The gameplay is almost identical to the original and it feels like you are playing a fine tuned version of the original. Unfortunately the warm story beats of the TLU is no where to be found. Its dark for the sake of dark, and tries so hard to be woke. But in the end result is mediocre at best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The previous game was a good journey with a solid gameplay and visual experience; the focus wasn't really the storyline, but its narration and the empathy that you develop towards Ellie and Joel.
This game basically match the expectation with the gameplay (pretty much like the previous one) and the visual (top notch as 2020), however it failes when it comes to narration, plot and characters.

In this game you play with Ellie in the first half, and another character for a little bit, until you have to play as Ellie again.

In the first half of the game you experience scenes that allow you to understand Ellie a little better, expecially with Joel and another girl (Ellie is lesbian). Unfortunaly only the scenes with Joel are well done, and the session in the natural science museum can easily be marked as the best thing you'll experience in this game. Her relation with the other girl can described without spoiler as meaningless because it's never been properly developed for various reasons. When finally the two are together Ellie decide to leave her for her last journey towards the end of the game as a proof the Ellie-Joel bond was simply better story wise and the girl relation wasn't a big deal.

In the other character experience there's not much to talk about. You're going to experience the story from a different point of view and it takes a while to understand the motivation of the new character.

The game ends with Ellie who leave the girl she supposed to love, and starts a journey that probably will takes months or so to hunt down the other character you played with.
It's really difficult to understand why they invest to much in the romance just to ditch it away in the end, why Ellie starts a journey to find another girl that as far as she know may well be dead (or may die during her hunt). It's even harder to understand the ending scene, knowing that no previous hints were shown to comprehend the sudden change in motivations that Ellie.
The whole ending scenes feel bad because a lot a things happen during this journey and none of them allow the player to understand the final choice of Ellie, leaving the player with the uncomfortable sensation that the devs focus too much on side contents narration and invest so few in the meaningful storyline.

But for me, none of that matters without a great story, and the story here SUCKS big time! They - meaning Mr. Druckman, Made me play the antagonist for half of the entirety of the game! They tried to make Ellie the bad guy now, Then, as if it was not bad enough, at the ending made me FEEL bad about playing Ellie! Even after Abby killed Joel, she had the happy ending while Ellie was left with nothing! How could that even be called a "good" ending?? MAYBE if this was the first game, then I wouldn't be rooting for Ellie as much as I did. But it isn't, this was PART 2! I have come to love Ellie and Joel, then this game just KILLED Joel at the onset, then at the end, made Ellie the antagonist at the end. I couldn't give this the score critics gave after playing it through and more importantly, I DID NOT HAVE FUN at all playing as Abby. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game starts out well and it leads you through a controversial plot. The characters already had a strong backstory, so there wasn’t much need for massive character development. However, as grindy as a linear revenge story gets, the game is satisfying. Half way through, you’re introduced to Abby, Joel’s killer. This is when the sh** hits the fan. The writers force the player to play the bad guy and what’s worse, they try to force the player to relate to her.

The first game was much more nuanced at doing this but that’s because the writing was actually good. In this garbage game, the writers tell you what’s right and what’s wrong. They also force you to play a shallow character and force you to try relate to her: she has friends, family, interests, oh my. You have to like this character, but not only that, the writers have the absolute gall and audacity to try turn you against Ellie and Joel. It just comes across as pretentious drivel. This is just another slap in the face to what's happening in sequels nowadays with continuous character assassinations to bolster shallow characters. For example, what's been happening in the newest ST and SW. Oh my gosh, it’s such a mess of a story. They tried to create a controversial story but it comes across as offensive. This is just bad story writing and changing characters like this ruins the whole experience for me.

I'll explain what they did in detail. The first part of the game resolves around Ellie's revenge plot, as basic as it is. However, the second half is a redemption arc for the villain and to portray them as 1: justified in their actions and 2: real every day people. They fail horribly on every count with this. First, they try demonize Joel and his actions in the first game, specifically when he killed the Fireflies to save Ellie. They do this by portraying the surgeon, who was going to murder Ellie, as a loving father and by showing how Joel is such a horribly person because he wiped out humanity's one hope to fight of the virus. They fail this miserably because the first game was about the moral question, do the means justify the ends? Of course, they do not. This is what the whole first game is about and philosophically they don't either. If the means justify the ends, then anything goes. Joel was defending Ellie's right to live, because she was not given a choice. It was not a sacrifice, it was attempted murder. It might have been different if the Firelies asked if Ellie was willing to sacrifice her life, but they didn't. As an example, in a pathetic attempt to assassinate Joel character, Abby remembers her past: when she mentions she would have sacrificed herself. Yet, seems to ignore the fact that Ellie did not have a choice since they kept her unconscious.

Since this attempted character assassination of Joel fails miserably, it's difficult to put the second part in perspective. What's worse, it's blatantly obvious how the writers keep trying to shove emotional scenes and backstories of Abby down the players throat from the very get go. The literal first 15 mins of Abby's playthrough is either characters directly or indrectly telling the player how good and likable she is.
I bet if they could change the first game, they would. But, they can't. They cannot change how things turned out in the first game, oh boy but sure do they try. The last of us Part 2 just insults your intelligence and there is no nuance. The basic morality of TLOUP2 is revenge is bad... Mmmkay. Now go brutally kill people. Eh?

I’m so shocked they did this and so offended. Please, if you have your own mind and enjoy stories that do not preach to you, then avoid at all costs. If you must play this, wait until it's super cheap. I loved the first game. I even played it just before playing this one, but be ready for a shock on the scale of TV series game of thrones the last few seasons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was so bad, I had to write a review.
Do you remember Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2? Last of Us II plays like Vol. 1, but face plants as it attempts to do the second half. Don’t get me wrong, they added and fixed sooo much from the first game, however, you (the player, not Ellie) are manipulated by the producers into something no one asked for. The game was great the literal first half, but the second half where you are forced to play as the antagonist whom you just spent 12 hours hating is the absolute worse. I didn’t sign up for a game where I have to play the antagonist/villain, cause that’s what she is a villain, and then face a bunch of heart pounding, saving the cat type moments, all so that I feel bad for her; that’s manipulation on a grande scale. I would have been happy just playing as Ellie for 28 hours straight, I don’t hate that they added a bunch of work characters, I liked that, but the ratio of crisis is more Abby heavy. Essentially, by the end you are not where you are suppose to be. It’s like if someone tried to describe game of thrones poorly, or try and make it the walking dead. The Last of Us II could have been a great game, they could have had the a motivation that didn’t piss off soooo many people, instead of doing what they did to Joel, Bobby, Ellie, Dina, Jesse, etc. I stopped playing half way through the second half for a month, I just couldn’t it was that disappointing. I powered through with the hope it would redeem itself, it did not. I wanted “Bloody Satisfaction” and I got a little of that with Nora, but I wanted more, I wanted a full fledge roaring rampage of revenge...instead it kinda fizzles our. Ultimately, I suggest that the head creators of this game retire in shame and disgrace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to really call a game bad when from a gameplay perspective it's so good.

But I think sometimes, the content of a game (or any intillectual property for that matter) is so bad and so departed from what made its original source material so damn good, that it renders any good left in it's content absolutely meaningless.

And from a gameplay aspect, whats here IS good! it's great. I genuinelly think that the gameplay is some of the best I've ever played in an action adventure game, it's gritty, impactfull, tactile, responsive, deep and isn't bogged down or unintuitive. Just a fluid, raw, adreneline soaked good old time. Truely, a genre defining console selling experience. I literally BOUGHT a playstation just to play the last of us 1 and 2 has even BETTER gameplay. So that will tell you how great the gameplay in this game actually is. Almost perfection.

Now you've got to ask yourself, if the gameplay is THAT good, how bad does the narrative of this game have to actually be to warrant such a poor rating?

It's because the original was a story about two broken people learning to love and trust again that form a father/daughter bond. I'm not exagerating when i say that it was one of the best performances in the entertainment industry Iv'e ever seen and i literally fell in love with those charecters, as did most people who played the original. Truely an iconic performance and a masterwork crafted that everyone involved should be beaming with pride about.

Which is why when certain things happen in this game which i won't mention for spoilers, makes me legitimately angry. Which by it's self is fine, i mean look at the games setting, death is an occurance and a very real risk, I love game of thrones, death happens in that all the time to beloved charecters, it can be a powerful thing to subvert an expectation or to remind your player/viewer that this is a gritty realistic world where anyone can die and genuinely makes you fear for your favourite charecters lives when they are in a sticky situation. It's not the death of a charecter that has made me think that this is a bad game narratively. It's the way in which it was done and the reasons WHY it was done.

Let's analyse these issues I have with it.

    1) The way in which a beloved charecter dies in this makes no sense as it happens due to the charecter acting and doing things that are out of charecter for the individual. This is bad as it shows that at naughty dog, the very fibre of a fictional charecters moral compass, drives, intelligence, thoughts and desires (all things that are the building blocks and foundation of a charecter) can be ignored and swept under the rug, just to shoe horn in their death. Thats bad writing. A death is an easy way to illicit an emotional response when the charecter is beloved and if an emotional response was the goal, it was achieved, but not without sacrificing the suspension of disbelief and not without raising inumerable questions of the decisions the charecter made prior to the death as to wether or not it would actually unfold the way it did. Bad writing, end of story. Didn't understand the charecter, or didn't care to even portray or write the charecter properly. Furthermore it shows disrespect towards
the audiance as we are expected to swallow it blindly without thought and without analysing it or spotting plot holes in it. Your audience is intelligent naughtydog, don't insult us.

2)Naughtydog playtest the narratives of their stories, in the prequal to this game they tested it and found that the death of ellie at the end (as it was originally) did not sit well with the test groups, so they changed it. This shows that the writers and decision makers at the time were able to sort the wheat from the chaff with feedback from test groups and could make intelligent, informed decisions
about what was not working narratively in their product and change it for the. The way in which they did this was so effective that I literally cannot pick out or think of a single fault in the originals narrative, it's almost perfect. As were a lot of naughty dogs games. So we know that naughtydog have the means and ability to do this, or at least they DID. With tlou2 they either didn't test it or they ignored the responses of the test groups or they allowed bias to dictate who those groups consisted of to illicit a biased response from test groups to echo chamber themselves.

3)The death was redundant narratively, any charecter could have been developed to have their death serve as a hook for the plot of this game, more than enough time passes by the time of the death and the charecter literally appears out of nowhere to fullfill this purpose.

Games are art, this isn't a game, it's propaganda riding on it's scions coat tails, it's existence is an insult and a stain on the careers of everyone involved. get this garbage away from me. This isn't art.

Just because a story is "realistic" doesn't make it a good story. And creating a character that most players would obviously hate (no matter how justified her actions) and then forcing you to play half of the game with that character is not my idea of a fun game. By the time the credits rolled I never wanted to see Ellie or Abby ever again. The tit for tat exchange whereby Abby only lives because she spared Ellie is weak, I don’t have a better way to say this. Forcing the player to understand the antagonist was a grueling and horrid experience. Abby’s own friends in game wish she would just leave and die before she ruins anymore lives. Then after the weak theater scene Ellie throws away what little life she has left. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has outstanding graphics, and the gameplay is good, pretty much the same as the first, but they added a dodge button and modified the jump and crouch button, so gameplay and graphics are great. However, the story? It was a disaster, it's as if the writers had no idea where to go with the story when writing it. Not only are the decisions that the characters make in the game stupid, but the whole plot itself is just dumb. A basic summary of it is that Joel is killed by some buff lady with a golf club named Abby, right after he saves her from being eaten by runners. You then spend half the game playing as Ellie to hunt down Abby and everyone else involved in Joel's death. Ellie has pretty much killed all of Abby's friends halfway in the game, then by sheer luck, Abby finds Ellie using a map that "Ellie" left behind after killing 2 of Abby's friends. Abby then kills Ellie's friend Jessie, then we're left on a cliffhanger as the screen goes to black. We now play half the game as Abby, we are forced to play 10 hours as her and empathize with her, which is incredibly difficult considering how psychopathic she is, then she hunts down Ellie and we're at the part where the cliffhanger left off at. Abby shoots Tommy, and beats Ellie to a pulp, but spares her for some reason. A year later, Ellie is living at a farmhouse, and Tommy, who has lost an eye, comes by with a lead on Abby. Ellie refuses at first, but changes her mind last minute and decides to pursue Abby in the middle of the night. She finds out Abby is being held prisoner by some bandits, so she kills over dozens of bandits just to get to Abby, and finds her tied up to a post. She cuts her free, instead of killing Abby on the spot, then makes a last minute decision to try and kill Abby again, but spares her, because of a 2 second flashback of Joel sitting on his porch. You would think that if anything, the flashback would motivate her, but it didn't, it somehow convinced her that killing Abby wasn't worth it, and "revenge is bad".

The game started off bad by rushing Joel's death and killing him off in a crappy way, then it got even worse when we were forced to play 10 straight hours as Abby. Playing half the game as her was completely pointless, and I felt no progress with her section, it just felt like a chore to do. Also, just when you think Abby (Joel's killer) is finally about to die (which is what the whole game was leading up to), she gets spared, because a 2 second flashback of Joel sitting on his porch is enough to convince Ellie that revenge is bad, like really? You couldn't have realized that when you were killing dozens of people just to get to Abby. It's just ridiculous. Oh, and you want to know what started this all? The only reason that Joel died is because he killed some random NPC surgeon at the end of the first game. Yeah, that nameless NPC surgeon that you can kill in 5 seconds is all of a sudden a major character, and that random surgeon just happened to be Abby's father. That is just very lazy writing.

After playing tlou2, it makes me realize that a sequel was completely unnecessary, and that the first game was better off the way it ended. The game is supposed to be a story driven game, but the story is horrendous, the dialogue can be outright cringy at times, and the characters in this game are nothing like the first game. Ellie keeps walking back and forth on decisions, and also ends up making some stupid decisions, and Joel and Tommy were just outright stupid. In the first game, Joel and Tommy were paranoid and cautious, but in the second, they're not cautious at all. They go unarmed into a room full of a dozen armed strangers, and they tell these strangers their names and where they live. When I realized that they left their weapons behind in the room next door, I wondered if they left their brains in the other room too, because that's the only explanation as to how they could be so stupid. If you loved the first game like I did, then I beg you, please, please, don't play the second game at all, the game is just boring and depressing. It feels like the story at times is just being dragged on and on and will never end, and it leaves you feeling no satisfaction by the end of the game.

Joel becomes a bumbling idiot that easily trusts and gives his real name to absolute strangers. Remember the cannibal incident where Ellie was kidnapped because they were looking for Joel? Remember how Joel rescues Ellie from the fireflies and they are probably looking for him to avenge Marlene? Because the game or Joel sure don't, after all, if Joel doesn't let his guard down and magically lose all his weapons the game can't abide by **** fantasies and kill him off only 2 hours into the game.

Ellie's depiction in this game is so sad I honestly believe Neil personally hates her. Not only does she have to watch her surrogate father die in front of her, witness Tommy loses his eye, and is abandoned by her girlfriend who also takes everything they had in their house. If that wasn't enough she loses 2 of her fingers rendering her unable to play the guitar and doesn't get revenge on Abby who caused everything.

All the value in the original story of a potential cure and the motivation of the characters is totally dulled. A lot of the controversy was about being too 'woke'. I don't care about that, I would have loved Ellie as a female protagonist, and her love story was cute. And once for all, the gamers community are not homophobic, the lgbt community are already part of the gamers community. Its OK to have LGBT characters when their development is well built, the way it was done here was just: Here conservative society swallow this LGBT pill and shut up. Expand

The story was horribly cliched, none of the context made any sense at all. You kill almost 30 people on your way to get to Abby and then let her go. Dialogues were amateur at best. The ending was non sensical, the story just pretended to be deep and edgy. The pacing is unbearably slow so much so that it is actually boring at times and frustrating. No improvements at all in the gameplay from the first part. Adding a jump button is not an improvement in my opinion. Overall not recommended.

-Its gameplay is basically the same as the title released in 2013, but the inclusion Jump, Prone & Dodge, but some enemy attacks are undodgeable.
-Its AI is basically the same as in 2013, which again means lots of dumm dumm NPCs, whether they are allies or enemies, which easily breaks the inmersion for the player with respect to the survival or the action in it.
-But its worst thing in question.. is its WRITING or STORYTELLING perspective, which is simply full of PLOT HOLES & moments which are completely devoid of any logic or common sense.. that causes many of its main characters to look like a bunch of simpletons or imbeciles, & this terrible WRITING also affects its ENDING.. which is nothing more than a MASSIVE LETDOWN.. basically imagine a John Wick killing all the characters that get in his way, when John is trying to kill the killer of his dog, but that at the end.. John decides to forgive the killer of his dog.. because he just conveniently have a flashback about his dog...

The Last Jedi, all over again! When a game developer doesn’t want to create quality content just to make sure that check boxes are ticked. Subverting expectations! I wonder if they had a story idea? Probably not. It is horrifying to see that they desecrate bellowed characters like Joel. Like Luke Skywalker, he did not get a worthy story or ending. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
