This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us is my favorite game of all time. This game on the other hand is awful. It's hard to even put into words how disappointing it is. I wanted to like it so much. I constantly watched all the trailers for month's, year's. I was in shock and confusion over what happens in the first act and it just get's progressively worse as it goes on. The best parts of The Last of Us are the little happy, heart warming moments, looking at the capital building at sun rise, the car ride to Pittsburgh, Ellie's jokes, Henry and Joel talking about Harley's, the moment's from left Behind, the Halloween shop, brick throwing contest, the merry-go-round, the arcade, playing Jak X, playing the turning, the water gun fight dancing on the display case, Riley and Ellie's Kiss, and the most important of all of them the giraffe scene. There are none of those moment's in this game. Everything in this game is miserable, uninteresting, messy, and boring. The very few good moment's are immediately halted. The visuals were not that impressive, I think Uncharted 4 looked a million times better. The Gameplay felt sluggish and not responsive, and probably one of the biggest let downs is that the soundtrack sucked, It felt so generic and boring. It felt like they were trying to recapture the music of the first game but it just sucked. The story was horrible both from what actually happens in the game and also from a writing and storytelling perspective. This may be hard to believe but I played the whole game in one go. It took me 23 hours to finish. I did not sleep because I knew I wouldn't be able to. It is so miserable that I wanted to get to the end to hopefully get some sort of closure and a tiny bit of happiness but nope. I get these flash Images of the ending in my head and it makes want to throw up, thats how bad it is. Weather it was intentional or not, I don't care. I really really really wanted to love this game. I love everything that The Last of Us and Naughty Dog represented, but this was spirit killing. Ellie has been my hero for seven years, she would always give me hope. but in this game, she let me down so much, everyone let me down. The Last of Us will always have a special place in my heart, but as far as I am concerned, this game does not exist. For me The Last of Us Ends with Ellie saying okay. Expand

Thanks, Naughty Dogs, for nothing else than a spit on your fans. I will never buy on of your games again. And to be fair, i will not put one dime in playstation anymore. Time to exode on xbox. This way, maybe i will be safe from such a disaster in the future.

Expand

It's like seeing realistic violence in a middle school play - absurd.

The gameplay of Part II is very similiar that we expiernced in previos part of the game and Uncharted series. It's pretty good, but there is nothing really new that can hold me near the screen for a long time. It starts allright but it turns boring after first nine hours of gameplay. And there are much more hours... The plot is simply not worth this time, better go and play A Thief's End.

Let's hope that the developers find the strength to create something truly amazing in the next game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

All these years I waited, pre-ordered and set aside time to play this I was beyond excited. To be faced with our wonderful Joel have his life brutally taken. I'm heartbroken, angry, and horrified. Joel & Ellie are ruined now.

We were ALL so excited to see the bond between him & Ellie again, I don't even want to play now. Why is the focus on some murdering heathen, and Ellie embarking embarking on the Dina journey?? and who the hell wrote his death right at the very beginning of the game..?? This game franchise is ALL about Joel and Ellie. Why take him away in such a cheap, brutal way by that murderer, not a good decision. It was done in such a crass way. It is so nonsensical too in that it bears no ties to the first game at all, and Joel & Ellie don't even communicate! It makes me so mad the way they let Joel down in making him and Tommy come across stupid as to give their names and hometown to the gang. It's a total injustice. It feels like the very short time we see Joel, he's just an unknown background character, not the huge leading icon of the game he is. Very strange what you've done to these characters. Ellie didn't even have a kind word to say as Joel died, despite the fact she loves him like a father.

The bond, humour and love was always the treat to the gamer to watch between Joel & Ellie. It feels like a weird liberal agenda of lgbt and feminism shoved down our throats, than it paying respect to our Joel & Ellie's journey. Games are to escape from the dreariness of the modern world..

They built up hype all this this time around Joel and him coming to rescue Ellie once more and it was built on a lie! the lowest of the low. They wanted to 'shock' your audience, but instead disrespected and showed plain dishonour towards a monumentally huge fanbase around the world, to Joel.

Joel and Ellie are the soul of The Last Of Us.

When we first watched him playing his guitar and singing to Ellie, I was in a flood of tears it moved me so much I literally was so excited to see their new ventures together. That was the absolute best part, beautifully done you could feel it in your soul. I haven't even picked up this game since Joel died i'm just so disappointed. I'm so shocked Naughty Dog that you've completely ruined a world class, deeply loved game. When we got to Joel's house and saw the flowers adorned outside and Ellie's heart breaking cuddling his jacket with his scent on, I cried and this isn't how I wanted to feel when we all fell in love with Joel. I'm a nurse and have needed a happy escape during this pandemic in the world, all my friends laughed at how much I adore Joel and I was talking about my excitement getting to see him reunited with Ellie everyday for months before this came out. Now it's no happy escape at all and i'm angry.

With a heavy heart, back to the wonderful original The Last Of us with our Joel & Ellie x original The Last of Us with our beloved Joel and Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I will blandly start with the pros and the cons:

    pros:
    amazing soundtrack
stunning graphics (really pushed the jet engine in my PS4)
    fitting atmosphere
    really scary horror elements
    solid boss fights
    amazing flashbacks

    middleground:
    fluid gameplay

    cons:
    gamebreaking bugs
    introduction of shallow characters
    misshandling of tons of characters
very basic run of the mill story
deceptive trailers and interviews by the developers
alteration of the first game's story, just so the current story can be justified
still really dumb ai and not enough use of new elements (-> the dogs)
    finale was unsatisfactory

This leads me to a score of 4/10. Now remember, I write this from a perspective of a player, that has enjoyed the previous game. As a standalone game, without knowing anything about TLOU, TLOU2 deserves 2 points more in my opinion.
My review won't have much of a structure, it's not a classic review. It's rather about random things that come to mind, while trying to adress each and every one of those points. I will most definitely forget to adress some things. Bear in mind that I am no professional reviewer.

So let's start with the good things... The game looks stunning! There isn't really that much to add. Naughty Dog really has pulled everything out of the PS4s repertoire, so much that you even experience (very very few) framedrops, which don't really bother me that much tbh, since the last of us is no competitive shooter. The whole presentation is amazing and really gives you apocalyptic vibes. Good apocalyptic vibes, because even though the game plays after the downfall of humanity, its still so vibrant and detailed. It gives it such a nice atmosphere, every locations is a stunner, it overloads your senses to the point where it's nearly overstimulating. Same goes for the music. It underlines everything that's good about the appearance and amplifies it tenfold. It also added to the "horror" aspect of the game. Yes I know, it isn't a horror game per se, but the dread you felt throughout encounters in a big rotten and empty city were just chilling. You were always on edge, especially since every non-human encounter was very unpredictable. Now we get to the bossfights, which also were a stregth of the game. they were perfectly stage, they felt heavy and "plastic" and they were challenging.
Now this sounds all good and fine and it seems that the last of us II is a perfect continuation to the beloved first adventure. However Appearance and playability isn't everything. The most important aspect of TLOU was it's characters, it's story, the relationship you have formed. None of that is good in the second game. None. Naughty dog introduced a bunch of new characters, at least half of them were treated as NPCs. Once they died an unspectacular death, they have been simply forgotten -> Jesse and Manny. Most act absolutely irrational, as our beloved "protagonist" and his brother. Joel and Tommy had the strongest downgrade in rationality, considering they still live in a post apocalyptic world. They treated an armed group of people seemingly as acquaintances, being incredibly relaxed and giving out info about themselves. Info that inevitably lead to Joel's death by a golf club (which is quite funny since they implied - Trailer and Interview - that Joel would be a longer part of this game). All that, because NPCs daughter, Abby, (the murderer) from the first game wanted revenge. Yes, that is essentially the whole plot. Yet another badly written revenge story. The character you played throughout the first game, just dies an incredibly stupid, undeserved and unspectacular death, so naughty dog can introduce their boring revenge story trope and a very boring (Antagonist). I wrote antagonist like that, because Abby isn't really portrayed as Antagonist, but a protagonist of her own story now. You have to play with the Joel replacement and you get gaslighted into feeling compassion for her: Her playing cutely with dogs, giving some flashbacks regarding her father's death. Also... regarding father's death: To make the story work, naughty dog changed some things from the first game's plot. They completely changed the doctor's ethnicity from african american to white american. I have absolutely no idea why. Then they started to feed you the narrative that Ellie was a guaranteed cure, even though she wasn't. They essentially changed parts of TLOU1 to make their fanfiction-tier story in TLOU2 work. Then they created this artificial infighting between Abby and Joel, because HE prevented HER death and hence HE risked the lifes of thousands of people.
I felt no sympathy for Abby whatsoever btw. The story felt forced and the game merely used TLOU1 as a stepping stone for their entirely new setup.
Now to the finale... Ellie has fought through hundreds of people to get to Abby, the final fight occurs and what happens? Nothing, she lets her go. Bravo!
The only good things were the Ellie and Joel flashbacks

The ONLY thing this game had going for them was the beautiful environments and thats why it will get a 1 instead of a zero

they absolutely destroyed Ellies character, made a sad attempt at trying to make the player feel bad and out of control of their actions when really it was insanely frustrating
Unnecessary censorship in Ellies relationship with Dina meanwhile Abby and Owen get a whole 5 second long sex scene

In this case, it had to be released as an independent game, not the Last of Earth 2. Also, the way the story unfolds forces players to take only one path, and they said you are wrong. Apart from right and wrong, the agony and decisions Joel made for Ellie in Part 1 were respectable. Ignoring all of these parts and killing Joel in vain and manipulating Abby, the cause of it, makes me very angry.
Also, because this game ignored these parts(Character setting and world view), it seems that there is a logical error in the middle of the story and a contradiction in the new character. I don’t know what arts are trying to destroy the Last of us all. If there was respect for the previous work and respect for the fans, the story's outcome would have been unfolded in a different direction in the process, even if it did not change.
Unlike a movie or a book, users who play games are more actively engaged in the experience of immersing in the character and sharing emotions. Of course, developer may have some freedom in game production, but I don't know what part 2 is for. It feels like it's just to take advantage of fame for Part 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first game was and still is a masterpiece. This second one, is GARBAGE. I was ok with the idea of Joel dying in this game and let Ellie be the protagonist. But, the way they did it, made me nauseous. First, killing in the most disgraceful way the most beloved character of the series and then forcing you to play as his murderer? It's INSANE.
If they wanted to get rid of Joel, they should at least show us some more of Abby, create some love for the character, make us simpathize with her cause and then get to this point in the story. There is nothing wrong in changing main characters. Take for example The Walking Dead Season 1. The death of Lee was shocking, but was a honorable death. A remarkable moment in the series just to pass the torch on to Clementine to make her own adventure.
Not only that, but they gave us the most horrible and disgusting sex scene I've ever seen in a video game or any other media. I had to turn my face away from the screen thinking the foul smell in that room. Anime boobs = CENSORED; Abby an Owen f***ing like two dudes in a prison cell = MASTERPIECE; WTF!
But they saved the best for last. When you finally thinks that the gameplay is going to be worth playing by killing Abby and get the so renowed "revenge", Ellie spares Abby. Not even a choice was given: to kill or not to kill Abby. Ellie ends with her "dad" dead, her friends dead, her girlfriend gone with their baby and two less fingers. And Abby? Abby is fine and dandy leaving with her friend into a new adventure where she can destroy more lives as she did with the characters of this franchise and its fans.

After falling in love with Joel and Ellie in the first game, Part 2 introduces us to the unlikable, ugly, and outright evil Abby, who tortures and kills Joel in the beginning of the game. Then the game forces you to play as this unrealistically buff woman as the second protagonist.

Perfect visuals and highly customizable difficulty and accessibility options of the game do not mitigate the horribly written story with no character development. Ellie and Joel act out of character, which makes this game feel like a stupid fan-fiction, created to convey woke political messages.

    Graphics: 10/10 (amazing graphics)

Gameplay: 5/10 (nothing innovative. not so different from the first game. forces you to play as Abby.)

    Story: 0/10

    New characters: 1/10

    Overall: 1/10

As I play this game there are familiarity with the gameplay compared with the first one with extra function which is nice. The visual are top notch, kudos for game visual designers who put numerous hours (like a slave i bet) into building this game world. The sounds and ambiance are simply amazing.

But not all good games need visual. As a mainly single player gamer i enjoyed a great story telling. The story will drive you to play the game, explore the lore, gain interest on the every corner of the world and everything because of the story. However this game story is trash compared to the first. Petty revenge story? back and forth back and forth with nothing to gain. Just emptiness, I'm a husk of a man now after playing this. I guess the director have achieve his mission to get everybody attention, time and money but to what cost?

If Naughty Dog firstly make TLOU part 1.5 that can tell "other protagonist" story in depth so that we can love them maybe TLOU part 2 can be pass as well rounded story. But you hardly know the character with a just 10 hours of gameplay?? or actually less then that if you just count characters interaction. That's not enough time for character development and put us on their side.

One generation Ball; the people who killed the whole game were either bandits or robbers, cannibals, and people who wanted to rape Ellie.
When she arrived at the hospital, JOE, who had lost her daughter, got her daughter Ellie back. In the current situation; killing to save people.
Time to go back and take a look at the attitude of the first generation of fireflies in the hospital.
If Ellie is your daughter, you don’t even have to watch the last one. You even ask your daughter, "Are you really willing?" The fireflies refused to let you ask.
Just leave a sentence "if you dare to try to do something, shoot you", and then turned to open up Allie's brain.
In this case, when you are able to save your daughter, will you let your daughter die?
In the second generation - Director Bai Zuo's writing, JOE was shaped as a demon, and JOE was killed.
Abi~ She is Aili who kills for hate and then kills for hate,
    Forced to forgive~~
Abi who killed people for hate~ is forgivable~
For killing the ball~~ The sin deserves death~
The script is written by people, whether it is good or bad, it is operated by people. There is no irrational problem. We can only be forced to swallow the writers. The real problem is that the person who wrote the script creates a rational and no position 'S script?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writers don't show nor tell the emotional development of the characters and instead place an impossible burden on the player to fill the gaps to make the story work.

The pacing is atrocious. Right at what the player is lead to believe is the climax, instead of paying off, the game takes a break and forces you to go through the story again from a different character's perspective for 10 hours, before finally it finally resumes telling the story.

TLOU2 touches the themes of grief, forgiveness, revenge and violence, but ultimately goes nowhere and/or fumbles the messaging and ends up contradicting itself.

The character arcs are very weak. Characters seem passive for most of the game, with things happening to them instead of them making choices. When they do make choices, how they change or why they made that choice isn't really expanded upon, leaving it to the imagination of the player.

All in all, a story where stuff happens but nothing really changes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know when they thought it would be an innovative idea to play with your favorite character's psychopath to force you to empathize. It's literally IMPOSSIBLE.

Joel is the best TLOU character and the one who made the game successful. is the most human and her decision is the decision we would all have made. I'm sick of reading that Joel has "condemned the world." Oh God, who are you condemning? Those psychopaths who were going to experiment with Ellie to open their heads and lie about the cure? There was no cure!
In the game, through memories and Ellie's perspective they try to tell you that Joel was selfish and mean, which is a complete madness of the creatives. In addition to constantly seeing Ellie get angry with Joel without having the slightest meaning. You were going to be a monkey on an experiment table, there was no cure! What's the intention here? Because let me say no. I repeat: there was no cure. They make it clear to you in the files you find in the O.R. So I understand they're staining Joel's legacy, because whoever makes the difference, it's not Ellie, it's Joel

By far the idea of forcing the player to drive abby after what he did is crazy. You've reduced TLOU's legacy to Kill Bill+shock with Netflix kisses. The backbone of pandemic, the cure and the themes of desolation, mistrust, Ellie's impulsiveness against Joel's cold distrust has disappeared, as well as the cheap way to conspire against a character who already has a life and study made to make us believe that he would be killed in such a stupid situation: "Hello, my name is Joel" "because we kill you". Joel has killer instinct, before anyone goes after him smells like miles, he would never show up or trust to break into the house of such a group of strangers. And they don't know his face either, are they killing everyone named Joel? How many Joel will there be in the world of tlou? It's by far rocky, screenwriter's whim. There are a series of crazy situations going to smoke bulls in a lost house in the middle of nowhere and a blizzard in the venia and just after they show joel's murder. I don't know what the hell's happened to Neil these years, but I don't recognize the characters, this isn't a good job. It's their game, they did, that they do whatever they want with that story but the consumer is the one who pays and has every right to criticize him for what it is, because in the end there is no VENGANZA. Ellie initiates a hunt against 1000,567,890 and a million innocent people to find her father's torturer who is a psychopath, and in the end she regrets the stupid, unworthy message that "revenge gets nothing" He couldn't think of it before killing all those thousand people? And Ellie would really regret if Ellie in the original game didn't hesitate to blow anyone's head off. The Ellie I know would not have hesitated to murder Abby's PSYCHOpath who killed her father. So the idea at that point is not only wrong, it invalidates the whole game. Besides that by the way Joel is eliminated it seems to have some kind of hatred or prejudice against him, I don't understand that cruelty on the part of the studio and force the player to then handle his killer, because we're not going to empathize with her NEVER that way. . You guys are crazy, but you've been geniuses far surpassing the last season of Game of Thrones. This game will be remembered forever as TLOU's infamous legacy. Too bad, actually. It's psychologically unnecessary and cruel wear and tear.

Sadly, nowadays it is a legitimation for publishing bad content, feminism, homosexuality or anything else to implement "politically correct" in a video game or film. Because if the storyline/the gameplay doesn't please the masses or individuals, you are automatically a racist, homophobic, sick human being. Which is indeed not true, because the broad mass of players agrees with these values and norms and have empathy for the characters. Nevertheless, the story is still badly written and even worse told and does not automatically become a "masterpiece" by incorporating such values. Here is a short list of the points which, in my opinion, makes the story bad:

    1. Joel and Tommy behave completely out of character by giving a random group their names and address. TLOUP2 even provides the proof for this itself, because as Ellie said: Joel and Tommy were aware that Joel has many enemies. (This is illogical in the normal world alone, but in a post-apocalyptic world? According to the motto: I go to any random group, tell them my name and address and then invite them to empty my fridge, although I know them for 3-4 minutes? Difficult but, ok.)
    2. The way Joel died is not worthy of a main character of this caliber. The death of Joel was a inevitable consequence for a second part, but the production was simply off.
    3. The fact that you MUST play the murderer of Joel for about 10 hours after watching Joel being brutally tortured and killed by him is insane. The order is crucial for me, because afterwards the game tries to force you into empathy to this character, which is not possible for me anymore. Perhaps when the order would be different, the empathy as well as the understanding would be much higher.
    4. Tommy behaves again out of character, which is ironic, because he behaves neither as in the 1st part nor as he was presented in the 2nd part. Because first Tommy goes off alone to protect Ellie and others, then wants to go back with them, after they teamed up in Seattle and he was told that Dina is pregnant. He barely gets away with his life (which I think is very unrealistic, considering the wounding he was inflicted with) to put pressure on Ellie one year later to finally hunt down the murderer now, and to put her own life at stake, even though he knows that she has a family now? It just doesn't fit his character.
    5. Ellie's departure at the end was not necessary. She takes off for another month-long "journey", leaving behind child and wife to hunt down the murderer of Joel. Any normal person who is filled with such hatred (especially in an apocalyptic scenario) and has two fingers bitten off during the "final" fight, would beat or kick the murderer with so much rage until you are exhausted or the adrenaline leaves the body again. The fact that Ellie lets the killer go is not logical. And yes, that's the "moral" of the story, but the fact that hate creates more hate and that you only experience loss and suffering with blind thoughts/actions of revenge is something that was performed 4-5 hours of playing time earlier and so I think the end is a pure time shift.

I don't care if a main character is male/female, gay/lesbian, black/white, African/Asian (to make that clear), as long as the core of the storyline is well worked out and you can identify with the protagonists or antagonists, which was very well done in the first part, but was mocked in the second. Positive about the game is the graphic appearance, as well as the open world parts. The gameplay hasn't improved much, but gives the impression that it is a bit outdated. As a very emotional person who comes for a great story I can not rate this game better than 1.

My conclusion from The Last of us Part II is, that no matter if you like the game or not (in my opinion it was a bad game), it doesn't matter anyway, because it's always easier to put others in a pigeonhole than to accept justified criticism/feedback. In the end all that counts is how much money the product has made, regardless of how high quality it is.

Terrible story, bland, unlikable characters, overall just boring. Huge step down from the first game.

    Terrible story and abysmal writing.

So as a linear, story driven game, it fails on the most important points...
It's a shame because the overall game mechanics are great, and there is a good attention to detail.

It's sad to see all the 10/10 reviews. Since when does your gender or sexuality make you an interesting character.
It is simply inclusion for the sake of inclusion.

I have beaten TLOU2 on the hardest difficulty Survivor & did so for the first game too but grounded & my opinion on the first game love it one of my favorite story game but the 2nd game is very bad now I avoided most spoiler & want to make this very clear because of my faith I don't agree with certain lifestyle choices BUT I absolutely do not hate and I do not have ill will toward anyone I love them just as I love anyone else so any of the things surrounding the game in a negative way did not effect how I feel about the game now the graphic really good BUT it was to be expected so no surprise there the dodging mechanic is interesting definitely made it harder but giving enough time you will learn the timing & it won't be to bad killing off Joel I knew that was happening before the game was even out Joel not getting any younger he was like high 40 early 50 in first game or something like that & the injury he took from all of that he won't be able to keep that up forever so I was never suprise he was going to die BUT the way he died was unforgivable from what we learned about Joel that scenario would have never happened like that Joel does not trust anyone outside his inner circle & he would never put himself his brother especially everyone else lives in a vulnerable position plus from the first game Joel tell Ellie he been on both side of ambush Joel would of never took those terrible risk that is the world they live in you can't trust anyone you don't know & you can barely trust the people you do know so I feel Joel was force into bad writing to fit the story & plot other parts of the game I did not like that I was force to kill dogs but it can't be help if you don't you die I also don't like that you are force to buy perks you don't want I wasted so many pill buying useless perks the first game you had a choice but the 2nd game you do not I didn't like the way things were handled between Ellie & Joel with the truth about what happened that day in the hospital in first game Ellie & Joel are both reasonably smart people now Ellie then may not been able to handle the truth but finding out now she should of been able to see what Joel see not just the love but & wanting to be father figure to Ellie but if Ellie die to become the cure it would be a worthless death everyone will mostly still die by the infected & human plus it not 100% that it would work & every year infected grows I also don't like playing as Abby however I did like some of her perks the old one from first game & new one I didn't even try to shoot Ellie & I did laugh when Ellie kills me but being Abby spicy scene & all nothing can be said to repair the damage that was done but I get why Abby wanted revenge it was her dad that died that spark it all but however there some good moment in the game like the guitar scenes the museum scenes but overall I would had rather known I can beat the game & would rather watch a walkthrough so I don't have to waste as much time as I did on the game but it was interesting Tommy survive I didn't think he did but I didn't like that Tommy show up ruining the small family of Ellie Dina & JJ plus Tommy was being 100% dirtbag to Ellie & ranting off about promises & I can't get revenge because of my injury & trying to guilt Ellie into doing it but because of Tommy it jack up Ellie already fragile mind & in the end leave Dina & JJ behind but the cold part even the revenge does not happen Ellie lose 2 finger loses Dina & JJ & can't play guitar properly all that for peace of mind things are just all over the place the game is bad not playable it a story driven game but since the story is terrible that mean the game is too & there was even times I forgot I was playing TLOU2 it was that boring & bad but overall my experience was terrible & I am glad I didn't buy it my brother did at least money saved but time wasted but if possible avoid this game watch a no commentary playthrough you will thank me later. The game has bombed for players and viewers, but the story is an offense to the first game.Joel would never fall in abby's trap, we learned this from the first tlou. The beautiful dynamic beetween father/daughter is gone. If you enjoy a clycle of revenge that goes from knowhere to nothing, that's the game for you. 3/10 at best. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
