    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joel in the first game wanted to survive. He got impaled and he didn't die. And in one part in the game he know that a guy "hurt" in the middle of the street is a trap. He did a rampage in the hospital at the end. Now in part 2 he was dumb enough to trust some people with Tommy and later get in a room with some danegrous looking people. He wouldn't do that in the first game.
    And gets killed 2-3 hours in the story, by some one buff looking "Abby" and you play as her. And the ending sucks Ellie does survive but dosen't get her revenge.    … Expand

    A game that fails its predecessor; though the graphics are competent, they are nothing spectacular, and in all other facets - gameplay, story, character, etc. - it falls flat.

    No one wanted this to be the story, this is kind of a slap in the face for all us fans who waited 7 years for this sequel. I don't care about Dina and I don't care about abby's backstory. 0/10.

    I did everything I could to avoid the spoilers, and the very little that did catch my attention, I made a conscious decision to ignore it. I even told myself that there was no way they could be true.

    I blamed trolls for spreading fake news, and yet, I can't believe how wrong I was.... 4 hours in, and I had to face the music. Everything they said was true. The story was dreadful,    I did everything I could to avoid the spoilers, and the very little that did catch my attention, I made a conscious decision to ignore it. This is arguably the worst game of this generation, and yet... conversely the most beautiful. I'm not even sure what they were thinking. Just a huge wasted opportunity to create something truly iconic and memorable.

    The game does not match the hype or the reviews on the website. I wonder why such a phenomenon exists. I buy games based on reviews and the reviews are not honest. Just don't raise your expectations. The first game on PS3 was much better. Really fake reviews.
    Part II just destroyed everything good about the first Last of Us.

    Very nice graphics played by a one-way tunnel, zero innovation and killed what was worth it in the first one; In a game where the main thing is the story, you can't deconstruct the characters that everyone loved feeling forced, it wasn't worth it. I now sell my copy for $ 50 before it becomes known by word of mouth and not from bought critics.

    This game is deeply transphobic. It features an overly masculine/mannish "hon" trans woman who gets lynched, and later brutally beats down and violently assaults and murders a lesbian couple. That is insanely **** up and horribly bigoted and transphobic. Other parts of the game contain another trans character, a trans man, who constantly gets deadnamed and misgendered, and he ends upThis game is deeply transphobic.     Sony and Naughty Dog have consistently censored anyone who tries to talk about this fact, including preventing reviewers from mentioning the entire second half of the game. Any leaks/info are taken down, censored, even memes are struck with DMCA notices.

    This wouldn't be so bad if the advertising made it clear that such transphobia and homophobia would be present throughout the game. But it doesn't. Instead the advertisements blatantly lie about the game, containing scenes that never occur in-game, featuring characters that are actually killed early on.

    It gets even worse as it features quite graphic depictions of sex, featuring the trans woman character, showing her topless and ofc without breasts and still looking mannish. Basically **** trans women. The director of the game apparently took part in the motion capture, presumably for this scene.

    I've decided to rate the game poorly due to the horrific and awful portrayal of lgbt people, and the lack of disclosure in the marketing materials; failing to note what this game actually contains. Shame on you sony and naughty dog. That's **** up. I will be boycotting both sony and naughty dog for the foreseeable future, until their views on lgbt people and women change quite drastically.    … Expand

If you are someone who loved what the first game had to offer in terms of emotional highs, rich characterisation and a believable story, you will not reunite with those elements in this game. It is truly saddening to see this franchise be thrown onto the ever growing fire of modern day sequels. I can only hope that whatever personal and deeply pretentious reason for telling this story was reached for the creator. In interviews, it was openly discussed that fans of the original would not like this game. I think that goal was perfectly reached, and I hope it's creator was appeased. There are many excellent story and character driven games out there that respect their characters and audience, and do not rely on violence to reach an outstanding conclusion. So naughty dog I can kill the other characters that did me wrong but oh no not the big bad because of a terrible flashback that takes an actual second. Where was that flashback for the other characters. This game sucks don't waste your money. Actual **** story. This shouldn't be Canon. This series ended after the first game.… Expand

    From a technical perspective it's great; the graphics are very nice to look at, although the gameplay is outdated. The story is where it falls apart for me and thus I can't recommend it.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First things first: technically, this is a tour de force for the PS4, even on its last legs. A great send-off for the console and a reminder of what it was able to achieve through its lifecycle. Naughty Dog's technical prowess is (maybe) only rivaled by Rockstar. That alone should warrant a better score, but I'm playing it for its story.

    On the story side of things, the game wants to teach you so many moral lessons that by the end of its 25 plus hours (which quite frankly, became a grind), I couldn't care anymore.

    I played the first game scared to death that something would happen to either Joel or Ellie because they made us care about them so fondly. That bond ended from the get-go...yes, Joel could die (and die he did), but in a proper fashion/circumstance. They just killed him to show us that any action deserves a reaction (wow, really?) and make sure his previous decision-making (saving his "daughter" who wouldn't?) couldn't go free of its reckoning.

    The game's sense of self-righteous is so pretentious – and to an extent, really pathetic – it tries to shove down your throat that it's better than you while forcing you to do things you wouldn't do if you had the chance to decide for yourself.

    With so much shady stuff coming from the studio policies and how they treat their people, it bothers me that Naughty Dog dared to think they could get away with trying to preach over ethics in life through this regrettable story.

    And no, this has nothing to do with Ellie being lesbian, etc. People bringing that up to save face for Druckman's hypocrisy are the real phobics.

The gameplay hasn't evolved at all and now feels outdated and too simplistic for a game released in 2020. Basically you move from box to box evading the same enemies for 24h.The combat is very boring, enemies do not have any AI development. Killing dogs is not fun at all and something i didn't appreciate when i was forced to do it, as some instances you don't get a choice and you follow an script.

    The story is terrible. Batwoman level of terrible. It made me sick so much cringe. It keeps lecturing the player about situations the game itself created with no interaction from the player.
    Full of plot holes and too much unnecessary filling, this game could have been 10h shorter.

    If you brought this do yourself a favor and return it. Buy it when it's 10$ or less, it does not deserves anything more than that.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game feels like ND were done telling the story of Joel and Ellie, but realised they needed to put them in the game to actually sell it. Ellie's story feels like they wrote Abby's story first and then copied it to Ellie. There are so many similarities, up to a love triangle involving a pregnant woman. I imagine ND were intending for Ellie and Abby to mirror each other, but in the end it feels too contrived to work.
    At the same time, the game fails to make Abby or her crew even remotely as compelling as Joel, Ellie, Tess and Bill were in the first game. Hell even the returning characters barely feel like themselves, except for a few scenes. The only new character who feels like a real person is Lev, and he shows up so late in the game, there's barely enough time left to spend with him.
    The game also has a huge problem with putting the dramatic payoff of storylines before the setup of those payoffs. If it's been 4 hours since I killed a named character so generic I've forgotten their name, I am not going to be moved by knowing they visited a seal with Abby at some point. Same with Joel's death. Everyone and their mother predicted he would die, but the way they did it just looks like shock value writing for the sake of saying it was 'unexpected.'
    There are plenty of stories where the main character dies and people still love the story, hell just recently we had RDR2 where the main character dies AND you play as another character for an extended period of time, but there wasn't a huge outcry of disappointment as there is now. Pretending people just didn't want Joel to die is absurd, they just thought it would be done better. (Maybe have him get bitten and have Ellie again be in a position where she has to watch someone she loves slowly lose their mind in front of her while she is left behind.)

    This game's story fails for me because TLOU is Joel and Ellie's story, this story could just as well have featured new characters in a new setting all together, nothing truly ties it to TLOU. And besides that, the story itself feels convoluted and bloated. Like I said, it feels like ND wanted to tell Abby's story, but realised that no one would buy it, so they forced Druckman to put Ellie and Joel in the story.

    The few redeeming areas of the game are aspects I'd always expect to be excellent when so much time and money is poured into a product: environments, music, acting. It's all wonderful, but I never played TLOU for just those things, and there are enough games where those elements are great as well as the story.
    The gameplay just has some improvements over the first game, but by the time you're crossing the bridge with Abby and Lev, you're so bored of doing the same stuff, it just doesn't even feel enjoyable anymore. Like the story, it repeats itself too often and kills any interest I had to begin with.

    And a final observation, even if I enjoyed the gameplay enough to slog through this again, why for the love of games would I want to watch Ellie be put through this bleak hell again? In the first game we probably all felt protective of her, and in this game it's nothing but horror after horror. She gets a few happy moments before it's all snatched away again and it ends with her being left alone - the thing she fears most. And for what? So ND can tell a generic 'revenge is bad, cycle of violence' story? It's a message we've seen a million times, done much better than this, and it just isn't worth sacrificing everything that made TLOU a beloved game.    … Expand

Metacritic will probably delete this by the time, considering it a "troll" score, but seriously, the game's story is BAD, it's "dark" and depressing just for the sake of it. They disrespected one of my favourite characters of last Gen, and literally spit on his corpse. Not only that, but the way that to his death was badly written, like everything conspired so that Abby would be attacked by clickers and Saved by Joel, and she had no idea that it was him who killed her father, and just like that, Joel and his brother end up on the camp of Abby's clan and trust them (even though they have years of experience and know that there bandits and merciless people out there) and are like hi my name is Joel Miller... That's just ridiculous, cartoon level of writing.
    Now the ending, my god the ending, Joel dies like 2hours in, so you spend all the journey with Ellie, killing everyone on your way to get to Abby and take revenge, and guess what, REVENGE BAD, she fights her, drwons her, then get a flash back of Joel playing guitar, and then let her go? Like what? What?! You're telling me that the guy who sacrificed the world for you, died because of this decision, and you killed everyone to get to the killer and avenge him, then decide nah, not worth it...
    I'm seriously speechless, if you've noticed I haven't talked about anything LGBT or Agenda pushing **** I have no problem with them, my problem with the game goes beyond that, I love old Bioware games, and they already had gay characters, so nothing new.
    And talking about nothing new, well, the gameplay hasn't evolved that much, jump button, sprint jump, dodge? I mean it's the same TLOU1 experience expanded in some open areas. I would rather recommend you buy Days Gone you can get it for cheap, has good gameplay and sandbox, and is also a zombie apocalypse game.    … Expand

    The graphics, animations and physics of the game are great, briefly there are no technical problems. But the scenario is very, very bad. Is this the scenario you could write and think for 7 years? Inconsistent and bad by all. The game also contains extreme violence and ridiculous sexuality. Violent porn seekers can play the game. This game is basically the adventure of an angry gay teenager.

    The only improvements I see in this game are the graphics and gameplay, which honeslty is the 90% the same as the old one and uncharted. Im not nearly as bothered by the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, but more of the way they are forced on you. I think there are other games that do it better and this just feels like Neil trying to push his own political agenda into players. I mean, the "Left Behind" DLC handled this in a much, MUCH, better way, especially if you consider how of an important choice is to say that the main character is gay. Did people "review bomb" that one? No, because the way the handled it was superb.

    This game has a lot of flaws, and I think a lot of people are also upset with the so called "critics" who are nothing more than Sony and ND lap dogs, supporting and calling anything a "10/10" just to simpathyze with devs who LITERALLY put FALSE ADVERTISING on their trailers.

    It sucks that people cant give it an honest review its all either 10/10 from fanboys or 0's from haters.    … Expand

Word of advice the characters that you loved in the first game? Don't get too attached to them, the characters do stupid things that they wouldn't normally do (Like Joel blindly walking into an ambush!). This leads to a pointless ending from a pointless bloody violent journey resulting in really nothing for the main characters. Its a weak message to stop a cycle of revenge. Btw why is Abby so buff? Leaving aside politics, ideologies, and any type of social thinking, this game is a half cooked improvement of the mechanics you found in the first one, contrary to the technical jump from Uncharted 3 to 4, the set pieces and action choreography obviously feels way more "real" but empty, the jump mechanic wasn't necessary at all, it'sJust passed to the second half of the game. The graphics are amazing, top notch, but overshadowed by what we already saw in vibrancy, fluency and sharpness over God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and even Uncharted. Ok it's a given that the scenarios can't be as magical as those, nonetheless, aside from certain scenarios and layouts, everything its just meh. Those are my main complain with the technical aspects of the game, starting from a 10, these points took away 4 points of this score. Now looking at the story and acting, there's enough said around here. The performances of every single character are incredible, aside from the nuances of their personas, it was a damn impressing interpretation. Moving on into the story, well, it feels like a power trip from you know who. He even self references himself in a uncomfortable sex scene, and in a collectible item, that's just disgusting to me. I'm not even gonna mention the story that they supervised... It's just bleak, and straight up violence porn. I'm so sorry. Hold your money for another game. And start analyzing who the reviewers are, how biased is the gaming media, and what they want to force upon us, the customers. It let me speechless that even Polygon was critical of the agenda and despiction of violence in favor of "the plot". With those little comments, now I upheld in better opinion Polygon vs IGN. And if you love videogames as I do, that's really saying something. Please, use your money wisely, now more than ever.     I am a huge fan of the Last of Us original game, however the story in this game is very poor and the characters are strange and inconsistent. Visuals are amazing but the core of the game, which is the story, is a weak and uninspiring effort with a sub par ending. I paid for it and I regret it.

    I expected a lot more from Naughty Dog. The story is terrible.
    Firstly, Abby kills Joel (protaganist in TLOU1) in the beginning and a few hours later, we are forced to play as Abby. There is zero player motivation to play as Abby. I just wanted her dead the entire time. Why am I playing as her? The writers then decide to guilt-trip (so we can empathize with Abby) the player by showing us Abby's humanity, story and how we (Ellie) murdered her friends. It didn't work because we have already killed so many other people along the way who also had friends and family. I had to sit through 10 hours of Abby gameplay. I was so happy when it ended.

    Ludonarrative dissonance. A pregnant lady in the game insists on going into combat, and all her friends are ok with it? There is no mention of how it's irresponsible and stupid. No? ok... Next, Joel would never trust anybody in the TLOU1, but in TLOU2, he just enters a room full of strangers and gets killed....seriously? Next, Abby was saved by Yara, Abby is determined to repay her kindness by getting her meds. But when Joel saves Abby, she does not hesitate to kill Joel. Ok, I guess she wanted Joel dead because he murdered her dad. I'll let this slip.

    The new characters introduced have so little screentime and are not very likeable.
    The cycle of revenge never ends. Where is the character development in the story? Ellie wants to kill Abby. Ok, that's a start. Next, Abby wants to kill Ellie when she kills Abby's friends. Nearing the end when Ellie fails, She decides to try and kill Abby again. When does this end? Well, the end is bad. Nothing gets solved (Ellie and Abby live).
    One could argue that the theme of revenge is that it does not solve anything, but it doesn't change the fact that I felt like I wasted my time seeing nothing get accomplished.    … Expand

I knew I’d enjoy it because of how much I loved TLOU I love the fact that in this one you get to explore even more to find new things that help you upgrade your equipment so that it doesn’t get old very quick. But...now for what I dislike THE STORY...the dialogue at times is very dry and seems like they are trying to get and emotional reaction that isn’t earned...and don’t even let me get started on Abby this is probably the worst video game character I’ve seen (worse then Micah)..they try to justify what she did which I can kinda understand but the biggest issue is that you are forced to play with someone that you don’t want to...I knew for a long time that this game would probably be Joel’s last but never did I think they’d toss him aside like garbage after we all got to know and love this character and if the direction of the 3rd is going where I believe (which is following Abby) then I think I’m done with this series.. sorry I began to rant lol but all in all I think the game is beautiful and a masterpiece visually but the story to me is what games are really about so it just ruined the experience for me… Expand

    The gameplay is essentially the same TLOU 1 with some tweaks. Nothing ground breaking, but works fine. 5/10 The plot / story is where the game fails in my opinion - it begins very strong, and begins to fizzle out as previously established characters make questionable decisions that are almost antithetical to what came before, as well as plot threads that seem to strain believability within the world that’s been created. One controversial death in particular - and the choice to move the plot towards the development of newer, less interesting characters ( with one major perspective shift in particular) makes it seem like the plot was decided early on with the characters just arbitrarily moved around to make it all fit and fails to feel organic at all. Decisions in the storytelling that should come off as bold and smart, come off as half baked and empty. Part of me wonders if it would have been more effectively told as a story completely separate from the first - or, it the team had opted to focus on the new characters right away and reveal twists as the game progressed instead of marketing the game based on continuing the story established in part 1. 1.5/10 As an a huge fan of the first game - and as a player who has played through it no less that 5 times, I can’t help but feel like Joel and Ellie deserved better. Final thoughts - divisiveness aside - the game will certainly be a huge success, but as someone who’s loved nearly all of Naughty Dog’s catalogue and TLOU1 in particularly being an all time favorite, it pains me to say that ultimately, this sequel is extremely disappointing.    … Expand

Also, the pacing is very weak as there is a huge change in the middle that basically takes you back to the square 1. The gameplay is good but is pretty repetitive after a while.

The story speaks for itself and it's really telling us that the developers hate us, that, or they wanted to wipe their asses with the people who bought the first game and ACTUALLY cared for it as a whole, people who loved the characters, the gameplay, the story, the atmosphere, the music, every single bit of it. Killing the character we all know too well, and nothing at the same time, was the biggest mistake of the developers. Not even killing it, but killing it in the way it was, was really humilliating, and I felt the humilliated person was ME as the player. Making you play as the killer in the second half of the game made me not sympathize with it, quite the contrary, made me hate it. This game was an utter insult to everyone who played the first one. The leaker(s) saved me a lot of money, because I was about to buy the collector's edition, and I'll be forever grateful for that kind act.… Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
