What EA needs to realize is that games like SW-BF II are not a reflection of its sports-oriented games. P2W features in a triple-A game is unacceptable, enough is enough EA if you don't start respecting your customer base I will boycott ALL EA games #boycottEA

A grindy mess of a progression system designed to sell gambling to kids using the Star Wars IP; even if micro transactions don't make a return "loot box" based progression for a multiplayer shooter is incredibly lame. Stay far far away from this one.

Forget all you've heard about the monetization practices Electronic Arts implemented in this game. Even without those, which are currently balanced out of the game shortly following its release, Battlefront 2 just is not fun to play.

The single factor that mars the experience so much in this game is the progression, or lack thereof. It's simply perplexing that DICE, a company that has developed games with near-perfect progression systems (followed by monetized progression systems that STILL felt rewarding) could botch it up this bad. You are not rewarded for your style of play but rather for your time spent playing. As a result you never feel in control of what you can unlock and the timing of rewards feel anticlimactic and boring.

This is a problem shared by DICE's previous game, Battlefield 1. Which brings us to Battlefront 2's second-biggest flaw: the meaninglessness of classes and team co-operation. Whereas BF1 failed in progression but mostly maintained the fun of choosing a loadout to maximize your potential and in turn your team's chances of winning, BF2 feels empty and pointless. No one seems to want to work with even one person on their team, and who can blame them when there is no incentive to do so? The way points are awarded at the end of the match seemed cruelly geared to discourage any heroics or even effort.

These two factors combine to rob Battlefront 2 of any merit. In the short term the gameplay is meaningless even if pretty to look at. In the long term everything feels like a grind and rewards seem to come too late or unexpectedly early.

Oh, and the campaign is really short and really dumb.

Stay away from this stink pile unless you find it for like $5, it will bore you after 3 hours.

This game has beautiful visuals, tight gameplay, and in general excellent production values. It's a shame you'll have to spend hundreds of additional dollars or thousands of hours in order to lock core features like playing as Darth Vader and developing playable classes with the terrible lootbox and trading card progression system.

I will not give this game even a 1 due to this greed that is corrupting the industry.

You cannot charge £50 for a pay to win, unbalanced game with constant insentive to buy loot crates, and they even lowered rewards for completing the campaign. If they wanted to "create a game for the fans" there wouldn't be locked heroes, and perhaps you'd get the campaigns hero as a reward.

The story was lack luster and unengaging along with what seemed incomplete gameplay however it was reasonably fun, and engaging in some big battles was memorable which is a shame as a lot will forget it due to the EA side of the game. The multiplayer was unbalanced and felt like a repetitive grind after an arduous few hours, trying all game modes and all unbalanced classes, along with not being able to play as some iconic heroes due to the loot system requiring you to not only save for heroes but power ups as well. Moreover people can simply buy these power ups so it is in no way satisfying playing and saving for them, as someone could have just bought their way to having better gear than you.

Save your money, do not buy this. If you do, in other words you are supporting pay to win games, and micro transactions ruining what could have been a fantastic game.

It's pretty disappointing to see a game that could obviously have been great fail so hard at it - 8 for graphics, 7 for sound, 6 for story but the thing that kills it all are the combat mechanics. You run around as a jerky meat puppet, easily felled by a stray blaster shot. Enemies get mowed down similarly easy - all those storm troopers might as well wear bikinis for all that their armor is worth.

This makes the game feel utterly unrealistic, and walking through multiplayer as well as story missions feels more like avoiding random deaths then a test of skill and acquired powers.

it doesn't help that every mission and character comes with a different button layout.

Overall, I expected a lot more, and I am not even upset about the stupid micro transactions.

Without the epic gear you are pretty much just cannon fodder, and to unlock the gear you need to play an ungodly amount of time. If you are limited in game play time, such as work, family, etc... don't even bother.

There is a campaign but it is short and doesn't support co op play.

I'm going to start off by saying i am not jumping on this bandwagon against EA just because everyone else is doing it. This is from a neutral standpoint.
They gained 5 points from me because the multiplayer is actually quite fun, more isolated around Galactic Assault and Starfighter Assault. I've had some good games that keeps me coming back to play the game. This game does a good job

I've had some good games that keeps me coming back to play the game. This game does a good job with the intensity and keeping it at a high level on both game modes. That is about the extent of the good news. Everything else is very blan, unexciting, "Safe" just like their movies are. The Campaign is OK. Not very long, not very emotional, only sometimes exciting, cliche predictable plot and outcome. There are points in the story that really bring you in to the lore of Star Wars but not near enough for even 1 star towards it. The progression system revolving around cards only attainable by loot boxes really brings down this rating. The cards look and sound cool but have little difference between classes or vehicles. Across starting four classes they all have the same boost Starcards with one card having a different name for each class. For ability Starcards, the diversity is limited to cool downs and enhancements with a couple options to change what your ability actually is. Lastly I will mention that other than credits towards buying loot crates, there isn't much reward for you to do better, or be a better team player.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 has clear remnants of actual effort. The game features gorgeous vistas, great sound design and fun gun-play that is to be expected from a game of this era.

However, monetisation of essential game mechanics such as heroes, guns and other upgrades leave the game unbalanced, unplayable and a mess.

    Do not buy this game!

I'd like to provide a balanced review of this game, from someone who has played hundreds (if not thousands) of hours online with Battlefront 1 , and also Battlefield 1 for that matter. Before reading the reviews I thought "is this the same hype that Battlefront 1 received" - which I very much enjoyed.

Firstly the good - graphics are great, sounds are great, the characters they included in this game are also great. Also the menu selection screens are quite beautiful. That's all that comes to mind.

On to the bad, and I'll list these by numbers in no particular order:

    1. The game is initially very confusing, the objectives, the different types of vehicles, how the different weapons operate, how and when to use different vehicles, how to strategically approach different objectives.
    2. The skins for this game are HORRIBLE. the robot troopers (whatever they are called, the thin ones) are almost impossible to see, providing a massive advantage to the robot army. Also the Empire has an officer, female in uniform, which looks exactly like a Rebel skin. Very confusing, and frustrating.
    3. The weapons feel very under powered. Thermal detonators are useless, most of the base guns are horrible. Some of the special effects are OK. The game feels incredibly unbalanced. You might spawn as Chewbacca for example after 5 minutes of grinding in a game, and you get killed by a lowly robot trooper played by some level 20 nerd who's upgraded everything, in a few milliseconds. Obviously not all of the weapons are underpowered, but the base weapons are all very very weak. Most explosive weapons are also very weak. The game highly favours top end "unlocks"
    4. The waiting times are annoying.
    5. The "squad" feature is weak and annoying. Encourages camping. Punishes people who push ahead and try to flank. If you are an "assault flanker" type gamer, this really sucks hard. Even the inclusion of jet packs doesn't really fix the problem. Mobility feels bad
    6. Most of the map designs are pretty poor, the death star one is OK. There are unfinished edges and bits that stick out of some areas, and "stuck in the wall syndrome" is alive and well. poorly tested levels.
    7. I don't think the game was tested at all, its extremely unbalanced beyond any other game I've ever played online. I'm not a professional gamer, but I'm a very solid BF1 (battlefront and battlefield) player, and in a recent game I only managed to get 3 kills in about an hour. The game heavily favours the stacked team, and people with significantly powerful unlocks. There are also lots of cheap "tricks" that experienced players will drain for all they are worth to get quick easy kills. In this sense the game was over-designed, but in all the wrong ways.
    8. The hero's are pretty much limited to seasoned regular (full time/unemployed) gamers who manage to get the battle points high enough. AND, they are hugely overpowered compared to Battlefront 1 - where they were well balanced. AND you will encounter them pretty regularly because of this terrible game mechanic. Map based pickups were far superior in this sense.
    9. The weapon drop off damage is all messed up, shooting people up close offers little advantages, get prepared to die a lot getting shot by a full-time gamer with all the unlocks sitting behind a bush 1km away.
    10. I've yet to understand this game. This is more of a personal gripe against the game. All previous styles of strategy have so far failed to work in this game. Flanking doesnt work because of how the opposition spawns, and the underpowered weapons. Careful placement of explosives thrown or fired doesnt yield much results either. There are very few stationary weapons that do much damage. Really the game BELONGS to those with superior upgrades, and who have spent incredible amount of hours unlocking things but also finding NICHE and cheap ways to get kills.

If you love Star Wars then I recommend you to buy and play the classic Star Wars Battlefront 2. The classic game offers so much more than this abomination. This game became a disaster because of the greedy EA making you pay more which is unnecessary and not listening to the fans on what they want. There is one thing I have to give props to and that DICE putting a lot of effort into making the style and graphics beautiful.

Abysmal single player 2.) copy pasta of a game: essentially BF2 is battlefield 1 with space wizards and space guns
3.) Anti consumer practices for too long Like most games today, those greedy game companies/publishers/stock holders (who never played games in their lives)... They'll just opt to copy paste games with old engines ause the whales with mommy's credit card don't care) not quality content...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Battlefront II has an interesting single-player story spanning from the Battle of Endor up until the events of The Force Awakens, with more of the single-player campaign that will become unlocked with the coming of The Last Jedi and the DLC 'season' associated with it. While it's entertaining and gives you a new look at events occurring behind the scenes of the Star Wars universe, it doesn't feel like it truly tells a new story from the side of the Empire. While there is future free DLC expanding on the story, the core campaign itself feels a bit short. Even playing on the hardest difficulty available, completing the story only took 5 hours. This probably would have even taken less time if it weren't for the fact that they included side-story missions that allowed you to play as different heroes, fleshing out how it all meshes into the Star Wars timeline.

Unarguably, the graphics are top-notch, especially on the Xbox One X, and when matched with the authentic sounds of blaster fire and random stormtrooper chatter.. it really gives you chance to pretend you're fighting in the Star Wars universe. That's enough to look past the occasional texture graphic load-in bug that make things unplayable and have to leave a match.

Though the loot crate mechanic implementation is terribly flawed, the gameplay itself seems fairly polished. There's doesn't seem to be much difference from Battlefront (2015) in terms of gunplay. The main difference seems to be in the way Star Cards are implemented and what they effect as well as heroes. No more camping a power-up to take to the skies in your TIE or X-wing or becoming a hero.. those now require battle points to earn the right to use during a match. That's a positive change. However, class rank-ups now seem completely arbitrary and based upon what Star Card you manage to draw. Paying for quick access to higher-leveled cards and greater card use terribly imbalances gameplay, especially during the early life-cycle of the game. It also handicaps new players later on once the playerbase obtains a greater share of power. While improved matchmaking may alleviate this, at a certain point, that won't really help. What's worse is that you're not even rewarded for good performance, generally netting you the same share of credits as everyone else. While EA says they want players to feel a sense of accomplishment, they're really just rewarding you for your participation.

End-of-match accolades also seem to be an afterthought, as often times the same player is recognized for different achievements in a match. This feels like a terrible step back, especially compared to games like Battlefield 1 that would recognize different players for performance in different classes and offering a sort of tiered recognition where the same player wouldn't be recognized multiple times.

Then comes monetization: loot boxes. Any implementation that affects core gameplay is bad. It feels like in an attempt to improve profit margins, the developers/publishers forgot their audience. Star Wars is a popular brand, and while you could almost do anything to it and make a profit, you still have to keep things fair for your customers. Everyone paid for the product, but you shouldn't give people who have greater disposable income an advantage just for throwing more money at you. That's disrespectful to your base audience. While one aspect was improved with the launch patch in terms of heroes.. the loot box implementation in this case was misguided because it completely disregarded one of the things players like most: player customization.

Gone are your choices of what to look like in Battlefront 2. You spawn in as a random gender. There's no variety of faces, either. Only a select few heroes have alternate appearances that you can unlock with a loot box drop.

Why they would decide to affect gameplay instead of targeting non-existent player customization in Battlefront 2 is beyond me.. if you want to make money, you can always have more cosmetic customizations without offending anyone.

Considering things a bit further, I have to ask myself: Is this game even finished yet? The developers let us know that the player customization system isn't complete yet. There's no toggle for group privacy.. all groups are private. Even if you make a group, is there really a point? They're marked on your map, but you're not spawning with them. Group spawning should be a base feature. Even the music is a toggle when there's a third option listed right in the option description. if it weren't for the core gameplay mechanics being complete and the audio-visual luster.. there are enough points to make one seriously consider that the game isn't ready yet but is being pushed out the door to release before The Last Jedi.

All in all, Battlefront 2 is a great game and a wonderful Star Wars experience dragged through the mud by poorly thought-out monetization mechanics of EA's toxic philosophy that runs counter to gamers.

I've put about 40 hours in, its a good looking game. Real problem with progression is you need crafting parts, everything else in crates is worthless. You get 35 to 50 parts per crate, 40 80 160 480 is what each level of star card takes to craft. If your duplicate cards gave you crafting parts it would be tolerable but they give you a tiny amount of credits so your never progressing much.I've put about 40 hours in, its a good looking game. This game is a joke. This is probably the worst IA and combat design I'd ever played.
Enemies just run straight to you to shoot you in the face, try to flank or run in single file to get you.

The progression system is tied to loot boxes which is awful. If you do not believe me then consider that this game started the investigations if loot boxes are gambling controversy in many countries. As sidenote: They asserted those are gambling and should be regulated. A Hawaii representative called the game even an online casino. If you still argue against this just look up how much time you need to unlock everything and / or how costly it is to buy everything. It is a poster child for pay to win. Only as another sidenote: Popular characters are also restricted behind these pay walls and even EA had to react to critizism. Also the story campaign while not awful is a disappointment because we thought and it was made to look like we got the Empires perspective for the main character. There was so much potential in this idea but they wasted this really fast. I still like some ideas, characters and twists however not enough to give a higher rating. Must also say that some twists or story parts are foreseeable from far away but this is not a huge negative. The presentation is superb. The graphics were amazing and deserve praise. I think there were hardly any games that could compete. Overall this could be on many most disappointing games list for the year if not of the decade but the last statement is probably too harsh as the competition is sadly really strong. I give a 1/10 to honor the presentation and dedication. Would the rest of the game be equally good this would be a remarkable classic. Another example how EA works. Expand

The story does a good job getting me to care about the characters, however there were moments that felt like they were missing due to how the story constantly shifts between character perspectives and emotions. Iden Of course, the visuals and audio are both stunning, and as a result, Battlefront II feels like a very authentic Star Wars experience. At points, the aesthetics were able to sell moments in which mechanics were very unimpressive, which can only be achieved through some top-notch design. However there were certain moments when even they failed to keep my interest, for example in the beginning of the campaign. In my opinion, this is one of Battlefront II's weakest moments. The first few minutes of a game are some of its most important, and should demonstrate to the player exactly how the rest of the game is going to play out. For example, take a look at how Bloodborne handles its first moments of gameplay. After grabbing basic weapons, the player is immediately forced into a fight against an extremely aggressive enemy. This not only teaches what is important about the game, (the combat), but also teaches the way enemies will fight and how they as the player will have to retaliate if they're going to survive this grueling experience. The first minutes of Battlefront II have the player flying a droid around a ship, which is a mechanic which never resurfaces in later chapters. This lasts for five minutes, after which the player is encouraged to use stealth, which is not a viable strategy in later chapters due to the positioning of enemies. These beginning moments are boring, disconnected, and do a terrible job establishing the rest of the game. The flying mechanics introduced in Chapter 2 are more involved than the first game, however the controls feel slightly clunky which resulted in a few deaths that I thought weren't entirely my fault. The game doesn't demonstrate what it does best until Chapter 3. This chapter and the others like it do a good job putting a unique spin on the mechanics typically used in these games, and as a result there are some moments that are unique to only this game, which fixes one of my biggest complaints about the first Star Wars Battlefront reboot. These sections do get a bit too disconnected at times, Chapter 12 feels extremely out of place, but as a whole they are a very positive addition to the game. Unfortunately, their inclusion means that no mission with Iden stands out in my mind. They weren't technically bad, however they're all very interchangeable, bland, and basic, mostly due to the fact that they're all very linear. There are a few collectibles to pick up along the way, however there are no branching paths to explore, and only a few of the gun battles have an interesting layout. They almost entirely take place on flat ground with cover strewn evenly throughout the arena, as opposed to something like Uncharted 4, which not only had a unique style due to how the hide-and-seek mechanics worked, but also had sections of level that could be grappled, there were slides, and there was some depth to the levels not present in Battlefront II. The abilities somewhat address this issue, but none of them are expanded upon enough or necessary enough to be excusable. The final campaign mission is also interesting because it's interconnected, and is the only stage to actually have a boss during its finale. Admittedly, the boss is very underwhelming and the mechanics are never anything more than the ship combat used in the rest of the game but it was more than I was expecting, which is a sentiment that can be applied to most of this game. It may not be great in any way, however it's enough of an improvement for its existence to be justified in my opinion. The microtransactions are obviously manipulative, and the multiplayer may not be worth playing with them, and the campaign overall felt lackluster and disappointing. So I'm going to give Star Wars Battlefront II a 4 out of 10. Expand

Upon inserting this into my PS4 I was met with a near 25GB patch, which is a troubling sign. Then the game took forever to install and all I could do in the meantime was play a single arcade mission which was absolutely dreadful.

The combat is not fluid, especially when playing as Kylo Ren who seemed to respond to my commands at his own will. This does not even compare to the PS2

Micro-transactions ruined that game. Pay or grind for 12 hours. The multiplayer is no fun at all. And the campaign was okay, but that's all. Sadly, the campaign was the only thing I enjoyed a little bit. It's so sad what EA made of the Star Wars franchise. Don't buy this game!

Painfully average reskin of your typical Battlefield game
In every measurable way this game should be better than its predecessor
But it’s just not, it’s not fun
They really should have used the base game from Battlefront 2015 and improved on that
    Oh yeah and screw lootboxes

I try to play 1 match.. 1 & it takes 10 minutes to find & fill a lobby. I try to get used to the feel of the game, but within 2 minutes I'm already being destroyed repeatedly by a level 500+ player whose already gotten a hero. Literally the worst game that I've ever played in my entire life. This makes Plants vs. Zombies garden warfare look like the best 3rd person shooter ever made in comparison

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Garbage ass matchmaking, probably worse than rocket league, and that’s saying something. Worst balancing system when it comes to abilities for certain characters. Yoda’s leap attack being able to go through blocks like what? It’s basically a guaranteed free hit when you just stand there trying to block it FORCING you to have to CONSTANTLY dodge. Which also makes for poorly made mechanics and gameplay just looks like a bugfest when the enemy is constantly dodging and being rubberbanded after you thought you had a hit. So many more things wrong with this **** game. Mind you it was made by a development team that SPECIALIZE in SPORT **** GAMES not any shooters or first person action games. _ L Expand

Star Wars Battlefront II provides a greater ambition than the previous installment. It has powerful war scenes, a brand new single player mode, and shows a much more magnificent Star Wars Universe. But just like the Jedi should be ware of the dark side of the Force, this game also meets some similar situations, such as beleaguered microtransaction elements and character growth problems. The first 10 hours of this game is full of surprises; however, the further you play this game, the more disappointed you will get.
