A fine successor to the original that adds so much more! The gunplay is exceptional and the story is solid! Would love some meaningful side missions though and some more skins!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rage 2 is another open-world shooter that does nothing new and just uses the mechanics that other games have pioneered to create an average open-world shooter. When I saw Rage 2 advertisements I was instantly on board because it looked like doom mixed with an open-world shooter and just the concept of that is amazing, and at some points, the game does feel like an open-world doom but its very rare. The first main problem with this game is all the bugs I've encountered and just the lack of polish that the game very much needs. In my playthrough of Rage 2, there were so many bugs that took me out of the experience and just bricked my game entirely. At one point the game broke so bad that the audio completely disappeared and I had to restart my console entirely just to get my audio back. Also, many of the textures I saw looked straight up like the original Doom game and i saw many texture pop-ins in my run of Rage 2. The story is also non-existent, there are only like 10 main missions and all of them are kind of boring besides like one or two of them. However, when I saw this game I knew the story wasn't going to be that strong so I didn't expect much. The open-world in Rage 2 is also a bit shallow, don't get me wrong there are multiple locations in this game but they are mostly just one unique location copy and pasted all over the map. But every once in a while, you will stumble upon a very cool location and it's like your going through a dungeon in Zelda or one of those prepper stashes in Far Cry 5. The driver feels very good besides motorcycles which feel terrible to drive, but besides that, the driving feels very good and I applaud them for making driving such fun when they didn't have too. This goes for the gunplay too, when you are running around shooting feels absolutely amazing. All the guns feel powerful and kind of have a weight to them but some of the guns do feel weak compared to others and not needed. But for the most part, the guns are good and the gunplay is even better. The powers are another highlight too, all of them feel so fun to use and none of them feel useless besides one. The game decides to give you a power that allows you to deploy a barrier that I never used in the game besides when I had to in the tutorial. The game wants you to move around and never stay in one area which completely defeats the purpose of the barrier. It's obvious that the developers couldn't think of another power so they decided to put in this one, they could have made the barrier power but just put a barrier around you so you could move around while you have a shield. So overall this game is an above-average open-world game that comes out about every year. Is it the worst game you will play? No, but it certainly isn't the best you're going to play. So this mainly comes down to if you wanna play another open-world game then just pick up Rage 2. However, if you are looking for something good, I wouldn't recommend picking this up. Expand

It’s like you are playing a mobile game.
Collect, collect, collect, collect. Collect spare parts, collect garbage, collect weapon upgrades. collect, improve the armor, collect something else. Collect, upgrade and again.
You have to spend a lot of time on completely meaningless and tedious things, but then you will find a bonus at the end, and so the whole game. A bunch of meaningless things addictive gameplay. Coins and luminous little things. In my opinion, the game was originally conceived as garbage to pump money, but then they realized that it was disgusting and the lootboxes would simply bury this game.

Riding uninteresting. There is only one car, everything else is just there. Skirmishes on cars are even worse.
Shooting is not interesting. But the management of the plant is not bad.
The graphics are good, but very poorly optimized.
The interface is the worst I've seen.

The game is unfinished. It has a huge amount of stupid flaws. I have not seen such a hack for a very long time. One of the worst games of the decade. Playing this is a real torture.

The action mechanics are great, the shooting, jumping and exploding. Everything else is not. The open world is just an empty, uninspired obstacle, the vehicle driving a not especially funny mess and the story is a laughing matter (in a bad way). Overall just a forgettable game.

The game had huge potentiality to become one of the best FPS games in this decade. After you play about an hour you realize that the only good thing is gun play, that is so satisfying, but the story, repetitive missions ( both main and side) and open world is an absolute crap. Three points for gun play, zero for the rest.

Don't fool yourself - it's not another id Software's masterpiece!
I wish RAGE 2 was an improved Rage 1 with Doom 2016 shooting, headbanging soundtrack and extraordinary characters. Now I have this bastard baby, that Mad Max and Blood Dragon made. There's list of all you should know before buying RAGE 2:

Story - Like a straight line with no twists - you see the ending just from the beginning. It took about 10 hours to complete the main story, unlocking all guns and perks, visiting all arks and devastating enormous mutants.

Shooting - You remember this feeling of synergy of protagonist and guns in Doom 2016? Forget it. Weapons in Rage 2 just make no sense - upgraded Assault Rifle is ultimate killing machine. Another guns are toys and you won't use them due to low-efficiency (also, BFG not included in standard edition, haha).

Driving - In Mad Max you could feel the difference between cars and environment. RAGE 2 has a cardbox cars in a cardboard world. All feels the same.

World and Activities - just look at another typical open world games. Uninteresting events in a flat empty world. There're not even interesting places to visit!

Soundtrack - IT HAS NO MUSIC! IT IS ALL THAT AMBIENT-LIKE NOISES MY FRIDGE MAKING! (seriously, RAGE 2 have something like main theme, that you can hear in main menu, but...)

Performance - 30 FPS lock, tons of bugs, in game menu freezing like it's 2007 and you try to run Crysis on your old PC. Don't know what else to say.

To sum up - you MAY have a bit of joy playing this, but only if you know how to entertain yourself. In other case - highly unrecommended. Even on sale. Yep, 4 point score - what it deserves.

I feel like I could write a book about all the terrible design decisions made for this game, but since I'm limited here I'll just cover the basics.

To sum it up, this is one of the worst "open world" games I've ever played.

It's main ability/mechanic is "Overdrive", basically the more enemies you kill in a short time frame, the more Felrite (Xp) you get per kill. This also allows you to buff your weapons for a short duration, basically just increasing their damage output. Problem is... the majority of the time you won't be fighting very many enemies. Most random open world events just have 1-8 enemies, meaning you won't even be able to hit the max multiplier of 10x. Every point of interest on the map usually only has you fight at max like 16 enemies at once, so even doing those doesn't allow you to use it much. Perhaps you could just increase the difficulty to increase how many enemies spawn? Nope. They went the lazy route with designing difficulty and just make your weapons weaker and the enemy weapons stronger. Playing this game on anything but Nightmare or harder makes it a joke, but this leads the problem with how you heal. You heal through the Overdrive mechanic, but if you're playing safe (avoiding incoming damage) you won't be able to max out your Overdrive and thus get more Hp and Xp per kill. The only other way to heal is to buy/craft healing injections. Both of which slow down the gameplay considerably. Seeing a problem with it's main ability/mechanic yet?

That's just one ability, I could touch on each and every ability you can get and how terribly designed they are. (A defensive shield that even when fully upgraded sucks at being a defensive shield for example.)

Let's touch on the weapons and how to acquire them. Weapons and Abilities both are tied to open world exploration, you have to find Arks to get access to the few weapons and abilities the game has. Not much are marked on your map to start and the only way to find them is by following a vague beam of light that shoots into the sky from each Ark location. (yet the beams of light disappears constantly... bug? intended?), If you don't just google a map of each Ark location you could spend most of the game not even having access to all the weapons and abilities. (There aren't even that many) Now lets talk about the weapons, they all have a Primary and Alternate FIre mode, but they're horribly unoriginal, several just have an AIm down the Sights mode where as others seem to have just been designed to "look cool" for a trailer but be terrible at actual combat situations. Like the Firestorm Revolver, what does it do? Well it's horribly inaccurate primary fire shoots darts basically that stick into the enemies then what does it's secondary fire do? It just snaps your fingers and makes the darts explode setting it's target on fire.... Is is just me or is that horribly unnecessary? The darts could easily just explode on their own (like they do when you use Overdrive) and thus give the gun something more interesting to do with it's alternate fire, but nope, it's just a mechanic to "look cool" when you snap your fingers instead of making any sense for a combat situation. The upgrades you get for weapons seem to just be how the weapon was originally designed to be like, but they stripped it down making the default version a much worse version of how the weapon should be. For example, the "insanely innovative" upgrades for your rocket launcher that locks on to enemies, is, one upgrade allows you to lock onto a SECOND enemy! Omg! So exciting! What does another upgrade down the line do? You guessed it! You can lock onto a THIRD enemy!! So exciting, so innovative. (Your other choices are even less interesting as just being reload speed upgrades or magazine size upgrades.)

The open world itself feels incredibly pointless and the entire game would be better if they just lined up every point of interest into a line and turned the game into a linear game. You can see all the random events that exist within 5 minutes of playing and they're all pointless. (Race someone for 1 Vehicle Upgrade part or kill random enemies on the road for a pathetic amount of xp is what it boils down to). The points of interests themselves all feel copy-pasted reusing the same environments for the same events over and over with minor differences in layout to not just be exact copy paste.

Do yourself a favor and skip this game, I wouldn't even suggest it on sale. Even free is a waste of time and there are better free games to play.

Not the greatest story, but the gameplay loop is very fun. The upgrades you get for your character actually feel impactful and while the open world is not unique, it still provides a playground of destruction that can make 2-3 hours disappear quickly without noticing it.

This is nothing like Rage 1. It is very repetitive in all the biomes. They did nothing to change it up when you advance zones. It just felt very cookie cutter. There are basically 3 types of missions and they are all same, all 300 hundred of them, rinse and repeat. Got boring real quick. But i had to complete it. I got it on PC.

Exploration is the least satisfying of any open world game I've ever played in my life. There are a few weapons and powers you have to find scattered across the wasteland, but that's it. It's a big open waste of time and space.

Since the writing and characters are atrocious, and every bandit-infested gas station or roadside attraction is exactly the same, there is exactly zero motivation to do anything but follow the arrows to your next objective. At least the original RAGE had character, and a fun CCG built in.

It has been a jarring transition going from the gorgeous 'hdr faux k' detailed AAA world of Days Gone to the blurry last gen looking Rage 2 on my ps4 pro & 4k tv setup. But having played Rage 2 for around 4 hours now I can safely say the 60 fps gameplay roaming across the environment shooting my way to glorious victory has been quite fun (if overpriced somewhat). I highly recommend switching off the OST and throwing on some heavy rock tunes and stream them through media player - my enjoyment of this game increased about 300%. Overall a solid 6/10 experience.

Everything outside of the shooting is mundane to, often bad. I knew it wasn't going to be great so I waited to buy it used and I'm already regretting it massively. I recommend waiting for a deep sale and many, many more patches and perhaps updates. There is fun to be had but it is covered in a knee high layer of jank and outdated open world mechanics.

I'll just point out the worst offenders:

-Every enemy in the game is basically the same enemy, approached in the same way. There is never any reason to think about what you're doing, or change your playstyle.

-The game is pitifully easy. It's basically impossible to die unless you decide to stand completely still and not attack the enemies.

-The map is mostly empty space, and what little content exists is just carbon copies of the same handful of encounters.

-There is a ton of terribly written dialogue that gets thrown at you. The story goes beyond boring and straight into terrible. Thankfully there is a skip option for everything.

-The driving is unbelievably clunky, and you need to do a lot of it traversing the empty map.

-The game is constantly inundating you with terribly voice acted dialogue. Every time you walk into a place you get one of the same 3 or 4 terrible voice lines that you've heard dozens of times from characters you've been given no reason care about telling you something you already knew or that is entirely irrelevant.

Of course, the shooting feels great, with great weapon variety and satisfying abilities to boot. The enemies could be more varied, but partially make up for this by having top-notch animations. Enemies will duck, roll, and move in all kinds of expressive ways in response to the way you approach them. Rage 2 also boasts competent level design, which looks as good as it feels to traverse, with some glaring exceptions (Certain world activities have nearly identical layouts). The driving combat is visually spectacular and fun at first, but quickly becomes stale, with controls that aren't quite on par with the on-foot combat.

The plot is worthless, the characters cardboard, attempting to compensate for their lack of substance with irreverent humor that mostly falls flat. The character models for the more important NPCs are notably much better than the rest by a large margin, whereas their voice actors' performances are just as hit or miss as the average wasteland schmuck's. Also, the music is pretty weak overall, like the composers were attempting to evoke Mick Gordon's hard-hitting scores from better games, but only managing to produce the diet soda equivalent.

In the end, Rage 2 kneecaps itself with an excess of downtime between the excitement of each combat encounter and an inescapable sense of mediocrity that pervades every corner of its frequently gorgeous world. It would have been better off with a more tightly paced, linear progression like its close relative Doom 2016 (A game that overshadows Rage 2 in nearly every category). Hopefully the best parts of Rage 2's combat make their way into Doom Eternal and the worst elements stay far away.

This is a proper game. Gameplay wise it's a 10/10 for me. The story is bland but I kinda like the villain anyway, but it's also way too short. Graphics are great and despite what many say the open world has quite much fun stuff to do. A strong 8/10 from me.

I was expecting the story to be forgettable but I'm blown away, it's not an academy award winning story but it's a lot of fun. Cross (the main antagonist) is such a dislikable character and I think that's what they were going for. I really enjoyed going up against him throughout the story. They did a great job with the allies as far as them being likeable and they did their job. I loved the story for what it's supposed to be and overall it did what it was supposed to do. The graphics are superb, maybe because I'm playing on a 4K but it's great. I saw multiple comments saying the game looks like a 360 game. Are you on meth? The colors go great with the theme and wackiness of the game.

The biomes and diversity of the world was surprising. I didn't expect anything too interesting but I loved driving and flying across the different areas of the map. Overall this game is nothing but fun, and if that's what you're looking for and this game looks interesting to you then I think you can't go wrong.

Hella fun. Wasn't expecting much as i wasn't wowed by the first Rage, but id has taken a different tact for the ostensible sequel and it really works. A bright vivid world to explore with great combat mechanics and fun vehicles to get around in. Nothing too deep, but awesome gameplay, which is really what video gaming is, for me, all about.

Whereas Wolfenstein and Doom combine good shooting with high production values, great music, great graphics, and coherent art direction to make fun and immersive experiences, Rage 2 does not. To be direct, I've never felt more terrible about spending $60 on a game in my life. My five hours with the game gave me a sinking feeling in my stomach. I felt cheated. This was a rush job that needed more attention to the elements of game design that we expect from a single-player game selling for $60 in 2019.

    My chief complaints:

    1. The production values are terrible, and the game simply fails to maintain immersion. Graphics and voice acting are last generation, if that. The game is obviously unfinished and any exploration of the world yields the same character model over and over again. Their voices don't sync. It takes every character forever to say anything, which completely ruins any momentum or excitement you might feel about playing the game. The end result is a world that doesn't seem to fit together. Areas are arbitrarily placed here and there, but they don't seem to coalesce into a feeling of a world. This is terrible for a modern open-world game. I just felt like the discrete combat scenarios, while exciting from time to time, did not fit together. The result was a feeling of being a game-tester, trying to have fun on the developer's unfinished product.
    2. The menu doesn't work (terrible lag when browsing through and interacting with it) and it does not explain itself. The developers just tacked more and more pages onto it and never revisited it to make it navigable. It's also ugly with no design or reason to it except that there be a lot of pages that take forever to get to.
    3. In-game "tutorials" are obvious transplants from the testing phase, which add to the feeling that I paid full price to playtest and give my impression of an amateur's attempt at game design. This was simply not the intended end result and it shows.
    4. Music lacks a coherent style and does not add atmosphere to the game's areas.
    5. Driving adds little apart from having to drive somewhere.

My takeaway: The lack of polish simply made me feel sad. Especially after playing Doom right before picking this up. It's such a shame because this could have been a great game with another year or so of work. The 4 score is credit to the engaging and fun shooting. More care for the other elements of the experience would deserve at least a 7. I thought the downsides wouldn't bother me because I love id shooters, but the quality of life issues and the lack of an inviting presentation really got in the way of my experience. The drab characters and meaningless world sapped the fun I expected to have and made me return to Wolfenstein and Doom which offer more comprehensive experiences. I thought I could fill in the blanks for rage 2 and use my imagination to build on the combat and make the game fun on my own, but this game is just not a complete package. Traded it in for $32 gamestop credit and won't look back. I'm relieved I didn't lose more money on this.

Combat is addicting and rewarding, but because the open world is a standard checklist one, it can get repetitive. You combine your special abilities with shooting and it's an easy 9/10. Other than the combat in this game, everything else is just average and disappointing. Driving is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, (it is overly arcadey, but serviceable). It's vehicular combat is few and far between, and not as satisfying as it looks tbh. The story itself was a disgrace, plus 8 main missions makes you wonder if they even tried on the storytelling part.
Pros: amazing combat, rewarding loot, arks, guns and abilities
So-so: driving and vehicular combat, some interesting and addicting open world activities (the blue markers mostly), while most are repetitive checklist material.
Cons: extremely short campaign, disgraceful/disappointing lack of story, uninteresting characters and npcs.
Can you imagine if this game had an decent story and campaign, it would easily been game of the year thus far.. right now it's a checklist game with amazing gameplay that should've been released at $40, because unless you're a trophy/ or achievement junky, it's a generally short game unless you like repetition a lot.

As a fan of ID Software since the 90s (and a fan of open world shooters like Borderlands 2 and Far Cry, aswell as the first Rage) I think this is a very good game.

The shooting mechanics are as awesome as they can be today and the enemies are relentles and brutal. The game is (in my opinion) too easy on medium dificulty, but if you play it on hard or nightmare it would be a great and frenetic experience. There is always a new power, weapon, upgrade to reach and you never stop to improve, becoming more and more brutal each time.

The story is maybe a bit too short (8 misions). But the 4 I have done so far were long awesome and brutal at the same time. Its not a complex story... but you shouldn´t be expecting that from an ID Software game right :) ?

Graphics and music are ok. Nothing revolutionary but not bad either. In PS4 Pro the game runs at 60 fps like 95% of the time (and when it drops looks still above 30) and excepting one major graphic issue on the prologue, 0 bugs. Textures should improve (like in the first Rage) but apart from that... pretty polished game. And about the music... it just fulfills what you can expect about a postapocaliptic enviroment.

The open world (as such)... AWESOME. You have 12 types of diferent acitivities (like bandits lairs, mutant bosses and such) but each one of them has its own lore and personality ensuring you dont see the same place twice. The driving feels great and the convoy chasing is quite nice.
    Major problems on the game:
    - No good secondary missions. While you have (as I said) a pretty good open world with lore and meaning... you have no big missions apart from the main story. They should have translated that lore into missiones and subplots but they didnt. The closest you get to this is NPC sending you to locations on the map you can do on your own (ok, dialogues, backstory... but not a real mission). If not for this, this game would be a MASTERPIECE.
    - Not enough driving challenges. In Rage you have dozens of races and vehicle arenas. In rage 2 you got 1 circuit, the conboys and the possibility of randomly encountering a pilot in the wasteland and compete against it. Maybe Im missing something in that part... but after exploring (overviewing) like 75% on the maps there seem to be no other circuits.

I would rate it a 75/100 (and it would be a 10 without those 2 failures). I rate it a 10 to counter the undeserved hate it has received.

PD: Also miss the first rage card game T_T

I was hoping for it to follow really close to the original game and to explain a lot about what happened after the previous game. This us not the case. This games story is boring and the game only makes up for it with the combat. The world doesn't look similar to the previous RAGE at all. Instead of it looking like an actual post-apocalyptic wasteland, it looks like Sunset Overdrive and how wacky that looked. Sunset Overdrive is a good game but the setting and look of that does not fit to the theme of RAGE. The vehicular combat isn't that good as well and not even on par with the first installments take on the subject. I think what Id Studious and Avalanche was doing was they wanted to appeal to a new audience and make a story that wasn't really that connected to the first RAGE because not many people played it. But, I think they should've followed way way closer to RAGE and made it be almost right after the first game. Then, they maybe could've remastered RAGE 1 and put it in the deluxe edition or something. Instead of aiming to the people that actually wanted the game, they aimed at a new audience that didn't really care for the game in the first place. I give it a 6/10. Expand

This game is only great for shooter newbies, those can expect to get fun gunplay but overall underwhelming and simplified introduction to the shooter genre.

Though I am disappointed in rage 2 and it's expensive and extensive micro transactions and day one removed content sold back to users in a AAA full priced 60$ game.

Rage 2 is really only like rage 1 only in visuals and name though 1 wasn't a great game and on launch had many of the technical issues now seen with rage 2 on pc and consoles.
Rage 2 is also not Mad Max which was the devs critically exclaimed but poorly received last game. I loved mad max. So i hoped i would love rage 2. I did enjoy aspects of R2 but like Days Gone ps4 it has launched in a less than desirable state.

There are serious graphic issues on all systems and on consoles textures can look blurry with a frame rate below 30fps...even on pro (super sampled). In 2019 I find this disappointing. Though the lighting is often excellent, as is the world design but your characters (man or woman) are awful.

The sound is acceptable though it can cut out and music is also a little too glitchy and doesn't always play in a dynamic way fitting to the on-screen action .

    Gameplay is good...fun..thrilling!
But can be hit and miss with large open areas of nothing to see or do. Gun-play is cool and creative as expected but there isn't always enough to do with it or long enough to enjoy the best parts of the game.

The missions are whacky and the story is zaney but like the characters ...nothing special.
There can be a fair bit of repetition and grind at times though there is a variety of things to do but spread thinly.

Car combat is not on mad max level of speed or quality. I have no idea why but I guess this is to do with the console limitations. It just isn't that fun though much of what there is has been lifted directly from mad max.

Lastability. No multiplayer right now which makes no sense when you see the micro transactions. It will last about 8 hours on medium difficulty. The AI is nothing special so you can play on hard but it doesn't change the game signififacntly beyond creating an artificial hardness and maybe a few more hours. If you're a completionist then maybe 20 hours but that's a lot of grind and busy work, as side missions aren't anything special or inspired.

Lets talk micro transactions. This is my main issue outside of the many tech and performance problems.

Four different payment choices for the game's premium currency, called RAGE Coins.
You should rage at these coins!

    500 RAGE Coins: $4.99
    1100 RAGE Coins: $9.99
    2,500 RAGE Coins: $19.99
    4,500 RAGE Coins: $34.99

This is a full price single player AAA game and on day one you have desirable content removed and sold back to the user. Its cosmetic for now but the game is based around cosmetics...the look of the guns and cars etc. Looking cool is the gameplay so charging players at full price to buy what they use to earn (in rage 1 and most games) is sleazy.

The premium store is not hidden and you will be aware of it and gently pushed towards them.
It's mostly weapon and vehicle skins but as the main game lacks a wealth of actual content or story I find these transactions harmful to the game.

There are also items available in the store you can purchase. They're are found through the game in the campaign and the idea is to skip the game and buy them early. You can use the in game's currency to pay for these items too but not the cosmetics.
I felt that the game forces you in contact with the micro transactions which is some destiny 2 level of shady stuff.

There is no way for you to get RAGE Coins unless you purchase them from the store. Real money in a AAA full price game. How you feel about that is your choice but it isn't great.

Summary: Rage 2 runs at about 30fps or lower on consoles. It has a well known audio bug which involves restarting the game. The car mechanics are 'off' and there are microtransactions in a game which didn't previously have them.

I'd wait for a sale if you like the genre due to the technical issues and micro transactions.

The shooting feels great, and the 'Nanotrite' super-powers that you can use feel amazing too.

RAGE 2 should not be judged harshly for it's paper thin story, because it never set out to entice you with a story to begin with. It's nothing more than an excuse to put you into different set-pieces and locations where you can shoot stuff. That being said, I always appreciate memorable characters in any form of entertainment and unfortunately for RAGE 2, it falls flat in creating any kind of interest towards the characters or the world that they live in, as a matter of fact, the original RAGE did world building much better and had many more memorable (and frankly, better looking) characters. It's incredibly disappointing and while it did not impact the game-play, the lack of any interesting characters made it very hard for me to care about the people I was supposed to be fighting to protect.

I give RAGE 2 an 7 out of 10 because it is at it's core a fantastic shooter, with combat unlike any other FPS game and has the signature 'id' seal of quality plastered all over it, but the disappointing absence of any character development and a wide-open world that's as big as an ocean but as shallow as a puddle holds this game back from being a truly memorable experience. Seeing Avalanche take part in the development of RAGE 2 was a major red flag for me and it seems like my gut was right.

Many, many games stay without score because they don't reach the necessary 4 reviews. This makes quick valueing of a game impossible. Changes that need to be made:-
-Show the score from the get-go!
-Make a written review mandatory for scores from 9 and up and certainly from 3 and down!
Unless changes in the scoring system are made, sites like Metacritic will become untrustworthy and useless. One could certainly argue that that moment has already happened
On the game itself: why do almost all recent games ship with an open world? What's wrong with a more linear game? Uncharted was one. It was good. Doom was one. It was great. I read here people nagging on the simple or absent story and at the same time shouting themselves hoarse that the action is narrativly interupted. Sigh... game reviews, by critics or users -hey everybody's a critic for the last 6 years already- have lost all merit. Rage 2 getting 70-ish and block pixel games or walking simulators getting 90-ish just because they're "stylish"?? Doling out zero's because the kiddies bear a grudge? Or because it's all the rage (haha) to do so? Yeah, lost all merit.

RAGE 2 is a game for lovers of fast-paced FPS action. The gunplay is amazing, almost as good as DOOM (2016), and the game has a ton of things to do. Although it’s repetitive and the main story is shorter than expected, the overall package is solid. It runs at 60fps on PS4 Pro, with some minor dips. I highly recommend it if you enjoy quick combat, gore; chaos and brainlesss action.

In my opinion, the game isn't trying to impress you with it's graphical prowess, or it's magnificient plot. No... it's about the combat.... and the combat; It's simply great.

Rage 2 is best described as a combination of the Mad Max game and the new DOOM.
Both of which I liked, but Mad Max did admittedly lose me before I finished it because of the repetition. Didn't stop me from playing it for several days back then though.
Rage 2 hasn't lost me and I'm about to finish the story after 3 days of playing.

This has been one of those games that have had me playing for so long I've been starving, since I've been too excited to keep on killing things to even go make dinner. It's also one of those games that I deliberately kept in the dark about. I tried to watch "just enough" to know if I'd dig it and the style of the combat and the few short trailers made me decide to have a go at it.
Going in with very little expectations and hype - and nothing "spoiled", I've been thoroughly entertained for probably around 20+ hours now.

I've seen some people mention they've passed the story in 7 hours or so and it makes me wonder if they even got the abilities, found the Arks and got the amazing tools of destruction that make me so eager to run from one task to another, just to get into combat again. The urge to try and mix up everything I have in my arsenal in an even more satisfying way than before is a very big factor in this game. To me, that enthusiasm about having fun with the combat itself completely negates "repetition" when it comes to the copious amounts of sideactivities. I'm glad there's alot of it and I'm not trying to obsessively accept every "quest" either. I've just gone with the flow and it has been fantastic. Some people also say the world is dead and lifeless while simultaneously complaining about the repetition... well.. as I've indeed "gone with the flow" so much, I think there's very little dull moments in the world. There's usually always something that can grab your attention and pull you towards the next mayhem.

I think I've now saved my game just before the very last story mission. I lack one Ark ability (no idea where that Ark is), but otherwise I'm good to go. When the story is over, I can see myself still playing for a good 10 hours atleast, if not more just because I just enjoy the gameplay itself.

I have had a few bugs - one with the HUD disappearing when I record a clip with the "Share" button, but it re-appears when I just open my weapon menu and fixes itself. Also a few audio issues where an audio clip is "left on" when it shouldn't have. This has required a save and a reload to fix. But they haven't been really bothersome at all.

This isn't a game that's taking itself seriously.. at one part the protagonist you control even makes fun of the questing system, how he/she "just so happens to be the only one who can do" that particular next thing that's the problem. It knows it's just a game, but it gives you tons to have fun with.

I'm... honestly weirded out how bad this game has been reviewed. Maybe it's just a difference of opinion then... or maybe people expected something else entirely. Or maybe because I haven't really played a first person shooter in a good while (DOOM was the previous one I think, when it came out), I'm really enjoying it. But if you're looking for a very decently "GOOD" game for the sheer purpose of action filled combat and aren't looking for a story - I would recommend checking the game out.

Now, I will add that this isn't one of the exceptionally fantastic games that we get every now and then. But a VERY decent in-between game if this type of game is your "cup of tea".

(Also: There are 71 User reviews that give this game a 0/10 while mentioning one or two reasons... Some gamers are making this whole industry infuriating sometimes. Cut the drama folks, you exaggerate more than my grandmother.)

It's not to say the game has some flaws and the 2 major ones are the story and the vehicles. Again like it's predecessor Rage 2 has an extremely incoherent story with probably the most cookie cutter bad guys I have seen in a shooter since The Helgast from Killzone and the final boss (General Cross) Is poorly implemented and feels like a backstep from the final boss of DOOM 2016 which made use of player skill and a decent spike in difficulty.
Next the vehicles handle like ass which is baffling seeing as Mad Max had some fantastic controls (On Console) this maybe down to the mix of being an FPS and a Vehicle Combat game which may suggest a split on balancing.
Overall Rage 2 is a fun game that is painfully average in some portions but I would highly recommend picking it up on a sale only for the fantastic combat and something to keep your attention.

Where is the action? The first hour was just talking, and Open World very empty, classic side missions

This is so much fun! The world design is rough, cool, industrial and weapons are awesome. Gameplay is great too. I didn’t play the first one, but I’m assuming that has something to do with the haters, because there is no version of reality where this is below a 6. I’m doing 90% of the side quests and it is coming in around 45 hours.

Mediocre at best boring at worst. That pretty much sums up my feeling about Rage 2.

It has many shortcomings, the biggest of which for me is a vast sandbox that feels mostly empty. They would have been better served making the world smaller and more richly populated like Borderlands. The second key flaw for a game that claims to be wall to wall action is incessant Stalker and Metro

The second key flaw for a game that claims to be wall to wall action is incessant Stalker and Metro style shortages of ammo. This quickly grows tiresome and robs the game of pace and enjoyment.

Lastly the feel of this game is not helped by rather bland graphics. Everything is washed out with ugly colour palettes and uninteresting environments. Indeed graphically this game feels backwards, like something you would have expected back in the early 2000's.

All in all a really bland affair that I'd lost interest in after 40 minutes or so of play.

Rage 2’s nonsensical story is unbearable, and the unskippable exploration parts are mostly irritating and boring. Luckily, the shooting gameplay is so amazing that it’s easy to forgive these flaws. And while encounters can become repetitive, new weapons and abilities make sure there’s always some fun to be had.

Rage 2 is a victim of a wave of technical issues and painfully average story but still manages to be one of the most fun FPS you can encounter and can provide you with your adrenaline shot for the day if needed.

The relentless thrill of one half of it dragged down by the barren, boring needless sprawl of the other. [Issue#334, p.110]
