The shooting feels great, and the 'Nanotrite' super-powers that you can use feel amazing too.

RAGE 2 should not be judged harshly for it's paper thin story, because it never set out to entice you with a story to begin with. It's nothing more than an excuse to put you into different set-pieces and locations where you can shoot stuff. That being said, I always appreciate memorable characters in any form of entertainment and unfortunately for RAGE 2, it falls flat in creating any kind of interest towards the characters or the world that they live in, as a matter of fact, the original RAGE did world building much better and had many more memorable (and frankly, better looking) characters. It's incredibly disappointing and while it did not impact the game-play, the lack of any interesting characters made it very hard for me to care about the people I was supposed to be fighting to protect.

I give RAGE 2 an 7 out of 10 because it is at it's core a fantastic shooter, with combat unlike any other FPS game and has the signature 'id' seal of quality plastered all over it, but the disappointing absence of any character development and a wide-open world that's as big as an ocean but as shallow as a puddle holds this game back from being a truly memorable experience. Seeing Avalanche take part in the development of RAGE 2 was a major red flag for me and it seems like my gut was right.

The player powers are old, one is a double jump power, wow, that's never been done in an FPS before. Overall the game is poor for a 2019 release. The campaign takes about 8-10 hours, which is a joke for a AAA priced game. Wait for a mega sale when its $10-$15.

It has been a jarring transition going from the gorgeous 'hdr faux k' detailed AAA world of Days Gone to the blurry last gen looking Rage 2 on my ps4 pro & 4k tv setup. But having played Rage 2 for around 4 hours now I can safely say the 60 fps gameplay roaming across the environment shooting my way to glorious victory has been quite fun (if overpriced somewhat). I highly recommend switching off the OST and throwing on some heavy rock tunes and stream them through media player - my enjoyment of this game increased about 300%. Overall a solid 6/10 experience.

The open world feels completely lifeless and devoid of anything cool or interesting to see or do. Worst part of the game is easily the driving, some of the worst controls in a modern day open world game.

Combat is addicting and rewarding, but because the open world is a standard checklist one, it can get repetitive. You combine your special abilities with shooting and it's an easy 9/10. Other than the combat in this game, everything else is just average and disappointing. Driving is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, (it is overly arcadey, but serviceable). It's vehicular combat is few and far between, and not as satisfying as it looks tbh. The story itself was a disgrace, plus 8 main missions makes you wonder if they even tried on the storytelling part.
Pros: amazing combat, rewarding loot, arks, guns and abilities
So-so: driving and vehicular combat, some interesting and addicting open world activities (the blue markers mostly), while most are repetitive checklist material.
Cons: extremely short campaign, disgraceful/disappointing lack of story, uninteresting characters and npcs.
Can you imagine if this game had an decent story and campaign, it would easily been game of the year thus far.. right now it's a checklist game with amazing gameplay that should've been released at $40, because unless you're a trophy/ or achievement junky, it's a generally short game unless you like repetition a lot.

Of course, the shooting feels great, with great weapon variety and satisfying abilities to boot. The enemies could be more varied, but partially make up for this by having top-notch animations. Enemies will duck, roll, and move in all kinds of expressive ways in response to the way you approach them. Rage 2 also boasts competent level design, which looks as good as it feels to traverse, with some glaring exceptions (Certain world activities have nearly identical layouts). The driving combat is visually spectacular and fun at first, but quickly becomes stale, with controls that aren't quite on par with the on-foot combat.

The plot is worthless, the characters cardboard, attempting to compensate for their lack of substance with irreverent humor that mostly falls flat. The character models for the more important NPCs are notably much better than the rest by a large margin, whereas their voice actors' performances are just as hit or miss as the average wasteland schmuck's. Also, the music is pretty weak overall, like the composers were attempting to evoke Mick Gordon's hard-hitting scores from better games, but only managing to produce the diet soda equivalent.

In the end, Rage 2 kneecaps itself with an excess of downtime between the excitement of each combat encounter and an inescapable sense of mediocrity that pervades every corner of its frequently gorgeous world. It would have been better off with a more tightly paced, linear progression like its close relative Doom 2016 (A game that overshadows Rage 2 in nearly every category). Hopefully the best parts of Rage 2's combat make their way into Doom Eternal and the worst elements stay far away.

I was hoping for it to follow really close to the original game and to explain a lot about what happened after the previous game. This us not the case. This games story is boring and the game only makes up for it with the combat. The world doesn't look similar to the previous RAGE at all. Instead of it looking like an actual post-apocalyptic wasteland, it looks like Sunset Overdrive and how wacky that looked. Sunset Overdrive is a good game but the setting and look of that does not fit to the theme of RAGE. The vehicular combat isn't that good as well and not even on par with the first installments take on the subject. I think what Id Studious and Avalanche was doing was they wanted to appeal to a new audience and make a story that wasn't really that connected to the first RAGE because not many people played it. But, I think they should've followed way way closer to RAGE and made it be almost right after the first game. Then, they maybe could've remastered RAGE 1 and put it in the deluxe edition or something. Instead of aiming to the people that actually wanted the game, they aimed at a new audience that didn't really care for the game in the first place. I give it a 6/10. Expand

Car combat is rare however taking down convoy leaders is the best part! Picking off minions before engaging with the boss on the open road felt fun! Still there isn’t a sense of speed in driving. Aside from locating Arks for new abilities/weapons, I just don’t feel compelled to explore the map (which is rare for me!). The humour is just not funny. Combat wise the game is good, but the other weak aspects just weigh it down too much, it’s just another post-apocalyptic open world game released this year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rage 2 is another open-world shooter that does nothing new and just uses the mechanics that other games have pioneered to create an average open-world shooter. When I saw Rage 2 advertisements I was instantly on board because it looked like doom mixed with an open-world shooter and just the concept of that is amazing, and at some points, the game does feel like an open-world doom but its very rare. The first main problem with this game is all the bugs I've encountered and just the lack of polish that the game very much needs. In my playthrough of Rage 2, there were so many bugs that took me out of the experience and just bricked my game entirely. At one point the game broke so bad that the audio completely disappeared and I had to restart my console entirely just to get my audio back. Also, many of the textures I saw looked straight up like the original Doom game and i saw many texture pop-ins in my run of Rage 2. The story is also non-existent, there are only like 10 main missions and all of them are kind of boring besides like one or two of them. However, when I saw this game I knew the story wasn't going to be that strong so I didn't expect much. The open-world in Rage 2 is also a bit shallow, don't get me wrong there are multiple locations in this game but they are mostly just one unique location copy and pasted all over the map. But every once in a while, you will stumble upon a very cool location and it's like your going through a dungeon in Zelda or one of those prepper stashes in Far Cry 5. The driver feels very good besides motorcycles which feel terrible to drive, but besides that, the driving feels very good and I applaud them for making driving such fun when they didn't have too. This goes for the gunplay too, when you are running around shooting feels absolutely amazing. All the guns feel powerful and kind of have a weight to them but some of the guns do feel weak compared to others and not needed. But for the most part, the guns are good and the gunplay is even better. The powers are another highlight too, all of them feel so fun to use and none of them feel useless besides one. The game decides to give you a power that allows you to deploy a barrier that I never used in the game besides when I had to in the tutorial. The game wants you to move around and never stay in one area which completely defeats the purpose of the barrier. It's obvious that the developers couldn't think of another power so they decided to put in this one, they could have made the barrier power but just put a barrier around you so you could move around while you have a shield. So overall this game is an above-average open-world game that comes out about every year. Is it the worst game you will play? No, but it certainly isn't the best you're going to play. So this mainly comes down to if you wanna play another open-world game then just pick up Rage 2. However, if you are looking for something good, I wouldn't recommend picking this up. Expand

For me, the gameplay that was shown looked like a combination of Fallout 4's colourful art style mixed with Doom 2016's fast, frenetic combat with a hint of futuristic Mad Max 2015 thrown in for good measure. It Was Awesome I simply could not wait for this game to get a release date because it was everything that I wanted from a sequel to Rage and more. E3 only served to increase my hype for Rage 2, but something about the gameplay demo didn't sit right with me.

Fast forward to May 2019 and I was baffled by review scores for Rage 2. It was only when I started playing the game that I understood what was wrong. Despite all of the clever pre-release marketing that cannily broke the fourth wall and possessed a Deadpool-esque style of humour that hinted at a smart self-aware game, Rage 2 was actually disappointingly dumb by comparison.

For me, the game's potential as a great sequel ended with the opening cinematic/monologue. After this point, the game's narrative became a parody of itself. The prologue I experienced was cringe inducing, woefully written, and just horribly cliched - your home base gets destroyed, the main villain personally shows up to join the 'party' (and somehow doesn't get killed then and there), your mentor gets killed personally by the main villain, and every other Ranger gets killed in the attack, leaving just you as the 'Last Ranger' who is the only one who can save the day. It doesn't get any better after this.

The main plot of Rage 2 involves seeking out 3 prominent figureheads to help you enact Project Dagger - an operation that will defeat the Authority - but that's about it. Despite it's 8 to 10 hour campaign length, Rage 2's main plotline is actually disappointingly very short. In total there are only 8 missions that make up the main story, but the campaign's overall length is padded out by the need to complete various open world activities to level up each figurehead's resistance meter and unlock that figurehead's next mission - somewhat similar to Just Cause 4. This is really a waste of storytelling potential because the world building and various factions present in Rage 2 could have provided excellent material and awesome story moments to help flesh out the main story and the player's interactions with these factions. It's also a huge waste of the brilliant concept and art design that went into developing Rage 2's world.

Another shocking disappointment is the COMPLETE LACK OF SIDE MISSIONS. I find this immensely frustrating because Rage 1 had A LOT of side missions which is why their absence in Rage 2 is highly questionable. There are perpetual bounties, but they amount to very little besides killing generic enemies and receiving piddly amounts of points and cash. In terms of world design, Rage 2 is a massively missed opportunity - the world is more open and explorable than the original, but it is completely empty and devoid of life besides the many side activity markers that dot the map. And speaking of side activities, I quickly became uninterested in Rage 2's side activities because of how repetitive they were - as a personal message to the developers, this is a really, really big problem when these side activities make up nearly 90% of the content in your game. Beyond this, Rage 2 lacks any form of decent story content.

I'd talk about the combat, but really that part of the game speaks for itself - weighty weapons that pack a hefty punch, plus a few unique toys that make Rage 2 almost redeemable. Take for example the gun that shoots darts that let you literally play around with the physics of enemies and objects, maybe making them collide or do other hilarious things. Or the gun that shoots bullets that ignite when you snap your fingers. These are just two examples of how Rage 2's combat sets itself apart from the competition, but it isn't without its problems. I experienced an annoying glitch where the revolver's bullets wouldn't ignite and another glitch where one of my weapons wouldn't do any damage at all

Design-wise, I found some significant flaws in Rage 2. Just before you leave, there are a whole bunch of NPC's all grieving in the wake of the attack, at the centre of which is Lily, the main character's best friend. After getting in the Phoenix ranger vehicle and driving a hundred metres away, I made a quick U-turn and headed back to the home base. I was startled to find that all the NPC's had disappeared and Lily was left awkwardly standing by herself in the same position. It didn't matter how many times I fast travelled to the home base, Lily would still be there doing the same thing. This speaks volumes of the design shortcuts taken in Rage 2.

It shocks me to think that it took 5 years to make Rage 2 and yet the original remains the better game. I can only hope they do better with Rage 3

Though I am disappointed in rage 2 and it's expensive and extensive micro transactions and day one removed content sold back to users in a AAA full priced 60$ game.

Rage 2 is really only like rage 1 only in visuals and name though 1 wasn't a great game and on launch had many of the technical issues now seen with rage 2 on pc and consoles.
Rage 2 is also not Mad Max which was the devs critically exclaimed but poorly received last game. I loved mad max. So i hoped i would love rage 2. I did enjoy aspects of R2 but like Days Gone ps4 it has launched in a less than desirable state.

There are serious graphic issues on all systems and on consoles textures can look blurry with a frame rate below 30fps...even on pro (super sampled). In 2019 I find this disappointing. Though the lighting is often excellent, as is the world design but your characters (man or woman) are awful.

The sound is acceptable though it can cut out and music is also a little too glitchy and doesn't always play in a dynamic way fitting to the on-screen action .

    Gameplay is good...fun..thrilling!
But can be hit and miss with large open areas of nothing to see or do. Gun-play is cool and creative as expected but there isn't always enough to do with it or long enough to enjoy the best parts of the game.

The missions are whacky and the story is zaney but like the characters ...nothing special.
There can be a fair bit of repetition and grind at times though there is a variety of things to do but spread thinly.

Car combat is not on mad max level of speed or quality. I have no idea why but I guess this is to do with the console limitations. It just isn't that fun though much of what there is has been lifted directly from mad max.

Lastability. No multiplayer right now which makes no sense when you see the micro transactions. It will last about 8 hours on medium difficulty. The AI is nothing special so you can play on hard but it doesn't change the game signififacntly beyond creating an artificial hardness and maybe a few more hours. If you're a completionist then maybe 20 hours but that's a lot of grind and busy work, as side missions aren't anything special or inspired.

Lets talk micro transactions. This is my main issue outside of the many tech and performance problems.

Four different payment choices for the game's premium currency, called RAGE Coins.
You should rage at these coins!

    500 RAGE Coins: $4.99
    1100 RAGE Coins: $9.99
    2,500 RAGE Coins: $19.99
    4,500 RAGE Coins: $34.99

This is a full price single player AAA game and on day one you have desirable content removed and sold back to the user. Its cosmetic for now but the game is based around cosmetics...the look of the guns and cars etc. Looking cool is the gameplay so charging players at full price to buy what they use to earn (in rage 1 and most games) is sleazy.

The premium store is not hidden and you will be aware of it and gently pushed towards them.
It's mostly weapon and vehicle skins but as the main game lacks a wealth of actual content or story I find these transactions harmful to the game.

There are also items available in the store you can purchase. They're are found through the game in the campaign and the idea is to skip the game and buy them early. You can use the in game's currency to pay for these items too but not the cosmetics.
I felt that the game forces you in contact with the micro transactions which is some destiny 2 level of shady stuff.

There is no way for you to get RAGE Coins unless you purchase them from the store. Real money in a AAA full price game. How you feel about that is your choice but it isn't great.

Summary: Rage 2 runs at about 30fps or lower on consoles. It has a well known audio bug which involves restarting the game. The car mechanics are 'off' and there are microtransactions in a game which didn't previously have them.

I'd wait for a sale if you like the genre due to the technical issues and micro transactions.

You can beat the game even with a shotgun.

I am saying it again, it had the potentials, it had the atmosphere, the 80's feel, the blood, the horror, the punks, the apocalypse but god! that story was so rushed and the voice acting was so poor...

The only thing that did well was the shooting part, which is so addictive and satisfying as hell and the performance which was running flawless without fps drops and stutters...
But obviously this is not enough from a AAA game which costs 59,99.

I played Rage 2 on my PS4 Pro with SSD and did quite a lot of sidetracking in the beginning when the boredomness kicked in and I decided to go straight on with the story mode.

The game engine itself looks great and runs smooth. In this regard it deserves probably a 9. The sound effects are pretty good too also when it comes to surround aspects but I wouldnt consider it topnotch. Loading times and fast travel went pretty in the seconds. Also I did not encounter any bluescreens or framedrops which is pretty solid but the gameplay itself is pretty flat. The story can be even considered bad or at least very flat. I do not like the vehicles and how the world traversal feels. It is kinda bothersome and pointless to do.

Most of the objectives are not very entertaining either. Basically it is drive to x, kill everything and move on or collect stuff. This is not enough in my opinion and way too generic. Looking around for singular boxes to complete areas is also pretty much only a waste of time and drove me crazy. The gunplay and gore is entertaining but even this is very flat. Basically dash, dodge, shoot, done. AI is very stupid on the intended game difficulty. Boss mobs are rare and mostly one mode re-skinned 4 times. If you know how to take them they wont even fire at you.

I basically used two guns, didnt even unlock most of the others which I do not even know why but it feels weird because I nearly full cleaned the first two areas. Some passage and turrent enemies are very frustrating and the racing modes do not add much either.

All in all I kinda like the style of this game, the action, gore and how they wanted the game to be and to reflect but the core is dead and without any passion for gamers. I bought the deluxe edition on a sale for 25 bucks and I m not sure whether it was worth it, so that tells much about the game quality and the fun I had. It still wasnt bad only and I do had some fun it was just very bland and in all honesty I wouldnt buy it again and so I would also not recommend this as a buy even on sale, sadly.

The story is very bland and I honestly felt the need to skip through most dialogue as it's fairly run of the mill cliché and nothing to write home about. However, most people know that story comes second to id software games and gameplay rises above, even though it can be somewhat repetitive. The issues are more of the usual problems with Bethesda games.

This game is a buggy mess and I can't believe it still hasn't been fixed a year later as the game is completely broken in certain aspects. There are minor glitches that didn't phase me much but were repetitive enough to bring up.

"Wingsticks" (a throwable weapon like a boomerang) would act very strangely most of the time. When I would hold L1 to aim and lock on, the wingstick wouldn't appear in my hand, instead it was a red flashing light which at first confused me but then I realised the model just wouldn't appear more than half the time I used it. I also found it to fly around a bit unpredictably even though it was supposed to follow a trajectory you can see but this was only a minor inconvenience.

The touchpad menu with the map and upgrades etc is also laggy when switching tabs and some of the upgrade systems (like how you can upgrade your abilities with perks) wasn't obvious to me until late into the story. It can be a little confusing the way it's laid out and made up names of a lot of things.

My BIGGEST complaint is that I couldn't finish the game and through no fault of my own. I actually wanted to, as the story is fairly short. Twice in my playthrough I had mission objectives disappear and not work. Once was ok as it fixed itself in about 10 minutes after fast travelling and driving about. The second still hasn't fixed itself and I've played about 5 more hours since it stopped. I spoke to one of the mission givers after completing the final objective before heading to last story mission. I accidentally went out of the map because I tried flying in a straight line when the game seemed to want me to go around an awkward route. Leaving the map essentially kills you and makes you load to your last checkpoint. When I loaded back in, the objective marker was gone, I couldn't talk to any mission givers anymore and when I went to the objective location, it said I wasn't ready, even though my mission log says everything is done. I fast travelled, restarted the game, spoken to everyone I could, completed countless free roam tasks, etc... Nothing worked. I've seen online many people on all platforms reporting the exact same problem so this is not just my copy.

I can't believe the Devs haven't updated the game to resolve this issue as I'm literally giving up now and not completing it. It's just not worth it now. I've read that some people say you're not supposed to drive a specific vehicle you are given until you need it on the way to the final mission but if that's the case it's incredibly dumb as the vehicle is dropped in front of you well before the last mission. Up until this last stretch I did have some fun with the game, that is why I am giving it a 5 but now I'm just fed up.

I can say the game is fun but I can't recommend Rage 2 until these issues are fixed and by the look it they don't care and are just ignoring them. They've updated the game to give new "happy new year" skins for some guns so it's ridiculous that they are working on silly things like that over actually allowing players to finish the game. Don't support buggy messes like this.

Every single "boss" is the same which is quite frankly humiliating for a triple A title. Nonetheless I enjoyed the title. Good 7/10 Expand

I don't think it's a bad game but the story is boring and the checkpoint system sucks, it let's you "save" your progress but the problem is they always uses checkpoints witch are long and when your playing a fast paste game like this it's kind of annoying to go back sometimes. (mostly in long corridors)

platinumed it on base PS4, and left with an impression of "very good shooter, bad open world".
the shooter part is most likely where id Software had the input: it's polished, fun and satisfying. not on DOOM 2016 level, but good enough to keep you engaged and playing around with abilities and weapons.

the shooter part is most likely where id Software had the input: it's polished, fun and satisfying. not on DOOM 2016 level, but good enough to keep you engaged and playing around with abilities and weapons.
the open world part, on the other hand, is an Avalanche Software's (of Just Cause and Mad Max fame) doing, and it's Just Boring (pun intended). a checklist of filler content and chores to do - clear out the outposts, loot the crates, destroy the mutant nests, roadblocks, turrets, etc., rinse and repeat. even the story at some point will mandate doing this side stuff in order to progress further.
the progression system is tied to said side tasks and exploration, so before the combat picks up and becomes crazy fun, you'll have to take your time and find the the weapons and abilities, grind out various currencies to upgrade them.
the story and characters are just there, and that's about it. cutscenes remind of, say, Far Cry and Borderlands, but lack the charm and are so few, they get forgotten pretty fast. there are, like, 6 missions excluding the prologue and final boss, so if you want to skip on "filler content", you're left with short and bare-bones campaign.
the performance on base PS4 does dip quite a bit, more powerful machines capable of better frame rate are a much better option. loading times aren't too long. bugs are mostly gone (with patch 1.09), no glitched trophies in my experience (they pop up with some delay). stats menu still can glitch out though.
in conclusion, RAGE 2 could've been an amazing game but suffers from bad open world design, lack of meaningful content, and absence of co-op/multiplayer. pick it up only for cheap and keep your expectations in check.

Very cool atmosphere, cool enemies and cool combat. Bad quests and terrible story and pacing. But the most annoying thing is that this game is heavily inspired in mad max, so you would expect that there would be lots of car options for car combat right? It has, but every single car is utterly garbage, there is just no reason for you to do anything with a different car than your main one.Very cool atmosphere, cool enemies and cool combat. Rage 2’s nonsensical story is unbearable, and the unskippable exploration parts are mostly irritating and boring. Luckily, the shooting gameplay is so amazing that it’s easy to forgive these flaws. And while encounters can become repetitive, new weapons and abilities make sure there’s always some fun to be had.

Rage 2 is a victim of a wave of technical issues and painfully average story but still manages to be one of the most fun FPS you can encounter and can provide you with your adrenaline shot for the day if needed.

The relentless thrill of one half of it dragged down by the barren, boring needless sprawl of the other. [Issue#334, p.110]
