What an amazing experience this game was! This was something I wasn't expecting at all. Persona 5 sucked me into its world instantly. The story is absolutely brilliant and while the graphics do leave something to be desired, it can easily be overlooked and I found myself addicted to its rich and vibrant world and characters.

It's easy to see how much effort was put into this game and I applaud the creators for creating such a masterpiece.

I was excited to play this game, seeing as so many people say it's beloved and one of the best games last generation, but to be honest, I could not really get into it. If you're a fan of jrpgs, you may not necessarily enjoy this - it's not an automatic shoe-in like other classic jrpgs might be.

For one, the time-based simulator did not jive with me. I found it difficult to know what all of my options were in given time period at times, and I was always stressed out in choosing how I spent my time because I really didn't know what the impact of my decisions would be, or what I needed to prepare for. This is the kind of game where beating it once probably gives you the necessary information to make better informed decisions in subsequent playthroughs, but with the game being well over 100 hours, that's a proposition I don't want to take the developers up on.

The other part of the game I did not enjoy was the combat. Mechanically, the combat is fine, but the rng is very brutal. If one of your party members misses an attack, or if your damage rolls much lower than it usually does, a fight that would have normally not wasted any HP or SP could spiral out of control and royally mess things up. For example, let's say a character misses an attack, and then that enemy that is on low health gets 3 crits in a row, and now 3 party members are below 25% hp despite being at max HP before the combat started - this can happen. It's very swingy like this. With SP being very limited in dungeons, using it to heal to recover from situations like this will really prevent you from finishing it in a smaller number of trips.

RNG also plays a roll in deciding what enemies you will face. You could get unlucky and just face the hardest batch of enemies over and over - it can easily happen. The end-result is that you will have to spend more resources to heal up damage and/or prevent damage than if the encounters were more balanced.

All this means is that grinding is actually fairly essential, even on normal difficulty, if you want to reduce your trips to do the dungeon to maximize your social time... which you probably want to do because you will end up with more abilities and stats compared to going in the dungeon multiple times.

Beyond how much I did not like the swingy rng, the graphics are actually fairly terrible. Outside of the anime cutscenes and art (which do look great), the actual 3d engine looks similar to what you find in a PS2 game (only the resolution is higher). On top of this, camera rotation and movement is extremely clunky. It almost reminds me of Mario 64 - it's kind of that bad. Like if you tilt your analogy stick slowly to the half-way position, the camera does not move until after you pass that 50% tilt, and then moves suddenly by a lot, exactly like Mario 64 c-sticks did. I wish it was a lot smoother :/ Rotating the camera to see enemies behind corners and stuff feels awful - like it's really bad.

There are some good things about the game. The voice acting is really good. The UI's and art style is neat. The music is quite good - some really nice tracks at times.

Ultimately though, I did not enjoy the swinginess of the rng in combat or the stress of not knowing what the impact of my social decisions would be, which is basically the 2 largest parts of the actual gameplay. I think if the combat was less swingy and you were not as punished by the rng and if the game did a better job showing available options with consequences to make decisions more intelligently, I might have enjoyed the game. But I sort of think this game is overrated and I enjoyed other modern jrpgs like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Atelier Ryza, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, etc. a lot more than this. I don't get the hype - I think you need to be a certain kind of person to enjoy this as there is a risk you might just not get into it. I could not finish it after about 10 hours or so - I was done.

This game also has a randomly generated dungeon that has like 60 floors. The floors are about as generic and braindead as your typical randomly generated dungeon. But here's the kicker- in order to finish the game you have to go through all of those randomly generated crappy levels.

This game is good for like the first 10 or so hours, the rest is just a waste of time. So much pointless fodder in everything, don't bother.

Pros: great story, role play mechanics where you can work at a job, go to school, socialise with friends, etc. Definitely a must buy if you don’t mind to read a lot of text.
Cons: combat can get a bit grinding/repetitive when you fight a lot of the same enemies and, as it is turn based, you often just press a button and watch the same animation over and over.

As you meet new people, you unlock special abilities for the action aspect of the game, something done so masterfully because the characters are interesting and their storylines are extremely rewarding. The palaces, which are the game's dungeons, are for the most part very fun and well built. I've never had any balancing issues and the game was challenging enough to be enjoyable. Everything about the game's visuals is AMAZING! The colors it uses, the character designs, even the UI is a wonder to look at! And the soundtrack is great as usual for Persona games, so much that I hear the tracks while doing many things at home. I definitely recommend this game because it's able to mix a interesting cast of characters with addicting gameplay and it only gets more expansive the more you play. 10/10 Expand

    * The art style and UI design is really cool.
    * The story with the Metaverse and Palaces was very cool.
    * Intersting combat system.

    The bad:
    * The negotiation system for "catching" personas SUCKS. I had to use a guide because it simply didn't make sense.
    * Some enemies/bosses have abilities that one-shot you which can cause you to die with the blink of an eye. This is bad design and something I truly despise in games. It's unfair and pure trash design. It's particularly bad in this game because if Joker gets one shotted, it's over, and it's also random so you have no control. The only safe way is to make sure you always have the ability to negate instant death once, because you never know if a new enemy can randomly one shot you.
    * The game is very slow and drags out for too long. The real-world part gets old really quickly and leveling up your stats and confidants over and over, hour after hour gets really dull.
    * Mementos is garbage. With 50+ levels with the same repetitive enemies that you have to grind through is a perfect way of lazy design and how not to do things. Is only there to increase the playtime, pure and simple.

This game is a ridiculously good game, especially for the many anime-fans among ous. It's gameplay, soundtrack, visuals and world-building are over the top.
I'll start with the gameplay, it's a really nice take on a jrpg, it feels amazing to play in two worlds and seeing the influence they have on each other. The battle system is more enjoyable than the typical jrpg system, this is not only because of the many types of attacks you can use, but also because your gameplay just before the battle decides if someone gets a headstart, this makes it important not to drop your guard just because your stats and team synergy are good, if you start with a disadvantage your tactics will quite probably fail to be commenced. Then there's the puzzle-solving, which is probably the least enjoyable part of the gameplay, but it still is decent. Last but not least there is the gameplay outside of dangerous areas, while these parts look futile the first time you sea them, the seemingly useless minigames and backstory have great effects on your stats and you get items with the effects that buyable items have for a prize that sometimes is a bit too high for what it's worth.
Then there is the ost, it's calming when it you're running around in the normal world being a normal person, but once you go to the other world the music will be epic and it represents the area you're in amazingly well.
Another amazing part is visuals, they aren't too high definition, but they are smooth, the attacks look flashy, yet strong. The character and enemy design are both unique and very nice to look at.
Then there is the amazing world, or more accurately two worlds (I know you can actually count all the palaces as different worlds, but they share the same gameplay and storyline), these worlds are amazingly well built, they're built in a way that you, without looking at the influence they have on each other through gameplay, can clearly see that they're very connected, which makes he game feel more in depth.
A last part that I didn't message in the beginning is the various social and psychological topics that are in the amazing story of this game. The creators shared their views on problems inside our society through a game we all love.

I would totally recommend this game to anyone who plays or played even a single turn based rpg or jrpg, and probably to most other people as well. This game is really worth it's money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. P5 is supposed to be a "rebel against the mainstream social conventions" story, but the irony is that the characters are so cartoonishly good-vs-evil it ended up being a really lame, safe and mainstream story without much thought-provoking depth or connection with the real world whatsoever. (Not to mention the various other issues such as the one-dimensionality and objectification of Ann and Ryuji, the dubious "hidden relationships" that the protagonist is able to develop with so many characters, etc.) I don't expect it to be a thorough and brutal examination on the subjectivity and reversibility of "justice" and "evil" like some 18+ novel e.g. Soukou Akki Muramasa (which is an absolute masterpiece), but then people should see P5 as what it is: A very shallow and mainstream teenage heroism power fantasy. People imagine themselves railing against the suffocating societal conventions or whatnot, but in reality they are just lapping up another mainstream commercial production and forking out their money for a power trip which has little real-world connotations. (If you actually try to "dish out justice" or "change the system" in real life, it's not such a black-and-white affair as depicted in some shallow super hero "good vs. evil" drama. There will be real sufferings and real deaths, and when you think you're the justice is with you, the other side might well think they're the just ones, instead of acting in a cartoonish villainy way, and there's just simply no "right answer" or "absolute justice" in the world.)

I can even see various points where the author probably initially envisioned how the story could get dark, e.g. the point where Okumura died felt like it could have been the phantom thieves that did it, whether accidentally or not. Instead they had to push every morally ambiguous or bad action to a fall guy (Goro) and dispense with him in the end as well, just like in every mainstream Japanese story (one who killed will also need to die in the end, while the protagonist is always clean). The "fake death" of Ryuji also felt like the author probably really thought about killing Ryuji instead. However, they decided to play it safe and make it a simple mainstream commercial success. Not to mention the student who committed suicide was miraculously healed at the end of the story… Yeah, sure, that's also one type of game/movie and I have nothing against it. But for it to receive such ridiculous level of praise and ratings is something I don't get. Well I guess this is how the mainstream game industry works nowadays and how its standards are. At least I'm glad that many people do share the same views.

This is also why nowadays I tend to not play JRPG games and instead read visual novels. The music and the art style of P5 are great, sure, but those don't leave a lasting impact on me and I am not after those things. I can understand that maybe those aspects of the game instead of the story are what many gamers are after though.

When i first came into the JRPG world, i was honestly afraid of whether i would be able to get used to the battle tactics of the persona series. But looking back at it now, Persona 5 is by far the most intriguing and more or less complete rpg game I've ever gotten my hands on. I agree that its very slow in the first 20 or so hours but after that, you'll be begging for more.

Greatest JRPG of the generation. The art, the music, the stylish nature of even the menus. The only issues I had with the game were with some quality of life choices & and the the most despicable adult you deal with is Kamoshida. I'm not saying the other guys aren't terrible people but it never felt as personal as it did in the first dungeon.

Fantastic and unique characters, stylish visuals, solid music, enjoyable variety in its main gameplay loop, and an engaging story from start to finish all set Persona 5 apart from the pack. Overall review: if you haven’t played this game yet, do yourself a favor and dive in.

It's a nice game, but it is not for everyone. I wish someone have told me that before I bought it. Graphics are not on a level you expect from a game with such a score. The sound is on the same level as graphics. Gameplay is slow, but that's how it should be for a game like that. The story is the magical thing that keeps you playing the game.

Gorgeous artwork and music, good story, awesome battle and faborability system. One thing that I think bad is DLC to make Persona 5 Royal has not been released (This is why I score 9 instead of 10). Still I cannot understand why. I'm sure that nobody cannot understand except marketing people in the publishing company.

I do tho wish there will come a DLC or something that at to the ending, so there is a raseson for ME to make a game+ and get all the characters to max lvl personal relationship thing, and yeas I know there is royal, but for ME, it not enough to play through the same 75 hours of gameplay and yeas I know there is a different on game+ with a new boss but still.

I was looking for a new title and saw Persona 5 among the top-rated PS4 titles (with GoW, RDR2, Uncharted 4 etc), and my curiosity got the best of me. JRPG's aren't usually my thing at all, which is probably why I felt like maybe I'd missed something, and I went ahead and bought it. Over 120 hrs later I'm nearing the end of the game, and I gotta say this really IS one of the best titlesI was looking for a new title and saw Persona 5 among the top-rated PS4 titles (with GoW, RDR2, Uncharted 4 etc), and my curiosity got the best of me. Over 120 hrs later I'm nearing the end of the game, and I gotta say this really IS one of the best titles for PS4.

Pro's: The art style is incredible. The fusion-esque soundtrack creates a great atmosphere. The story! Oh, the story. You really feel like you're getting to know these people, as if you're actually a member of the Phantom Thieves. This game has me wanting to travel to Sangenjaya (the real-life inspiration for the in-game Yongenjaya) more than GTAV ever made me want to go to LA. I feel like I could walk into a coffee shop in Tokyo and have a brew with one of the character's from the game. It's weird.

More pro's: The turn-based combat is multi-levelled and engrossing, despite me usually shying away from turn-based RPG's. It can be quite fast-paced, which I like (and it looks stunning). In terms of story and writing, it can be quirky, comical, serious, unbelievably dark even - which is what makes it such an artwork in my opinion.

Con's: The beginning of the game feels quite difficult unless you're familiar with the genre, but I got the hang of it after looking for tips online. Without spoiling anything, the end of the game stretches out for a good bit which isn't necessarily a bad thing but after 100+ hours of playing I sort of got fed up with boss fights.

Summary: As an individual, I try to keep an open mind but it should be added that I usually prefer 3rd person adventures/action/horror games and the like. I'm glad I tried Persona 5 though, and now it's become one of my most anticipated series to look forward to (Persona 6 when??). So if you're like me and you're looking for something different, you should definitely check out this game. If you're already into japanese RPG's or anime/manga, then it's a no-brainer. Get this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Persona 5 is amazing but it's also extremely flawed. To start with the good: this game is incredibly stylized. Everything from the dynamic menu screens, your phone, the clinic's and airsoft shop's menu's to combat finishing moves(the all-out attacks, each one amazing, unique and loyal to the character's personality, they are also really pleasant to look at) is an exercise in innovation.
The music is up there with Nier: Automata as the best. Every track is perfectly used and the creates the right mood. "Rivers in the Desert" and "Life will change" are the best tracks but every palace theme is perfect to its palace theme making them even more fun to explore. Some of the best moments in the game include listening to the lyrics to "Life will change" for the first time and "Rivers in the Desert" being used as the battle theme in Shido's fight.
The turn-base combat is actually fun and the "persona system" includes a good amount of personas with great character design most of the time and a good amount of abilities. The social aspect is related to the personas and the combat and that is a great decision since it motivates to get to know these characters' stories and sorting out what you should do and who you want to hang out with is engaging.
The characters are a bit hit or miss. Mostly they are good or great, but they can have really bad scenes: Makoto's stupid decision to go after a mafia boss, Ryuji is always revealing that they are the phantom thieves, Yusuke's introduction (wanting to paint Ann nude), Haru's lack of screen time and importance, almost everything Morgana does or says and Mishima's fixation with the group. While playing the game this tends to not matter anymore since you spend more time with the characters and grow to love each one (Yusuke and Ryuji are the best ones).
The voice acting is just perfect especially Ryuji and the character design for each phantom thief is stylish.
Here comes the not so great parts:
The story overall has lots of problems but does lots of things right...but the copious amount of exposition, bad or repetitive dialogue in some earlier sections, cartoonishly evil moments (Shido's and Akechi's dialogue), the entirety of the Okumura's palace/Morgana's tantrum and the pointless flashbacks are not even close to being decent. With that out of the way we can get to the good part again: the story is really good, a bit simplistic (society, society, society, rotten adults) but the game doesn't have a very serious tone so it's more acceptable. Each palace is fun to explore, contains a good amount of symbolism in its architecture and interesting persona fights, including the final boss... except the Okumura one, that's just **** enemies,"quests" and boring puzzles leading to the worst boss fight (all of this plus Morgana's tantrum just steal Haru's spotlight). All in all Sae and Futaba have the best and second best palaces and "Price" and "Whims of fate" are the best palace themes. Almost every palace is amazing. The last section in mementos is also really great: going through this area full of strong enemies is a great build-up to the Holy Grail reveal that leads to the second best scene in the game (the gang disappearing). Next comes a series of amazing fights against raphael and company leading to the best fight in the game against Yaldabaoth (Akechi's fight is more meaningful and difficult and Sae's is the most aesthetically pleasing with the roulette stuff) that is both difficult and fun due to the seven deadly sins. Then when you loose, all your confidants cheer you on as you literally use the power of friendship and free Arsène's chains to summon Satanael and in the best scene in the game you use your gun and Satanael fires a single bullet that shatters Yaldabaoth's head (great use of both slow motion, silence and sound design), great camera work as the camera comes through Yaldabaoth's head while focusing on the cloudy skies (great use of color with the yellowish/redish skies contrast with Satanael's blueish "awakening"). After that basically comes having to say goodbye to the characters you grow to love and letting your friends drive you home.
Persona 5 is stunning but inconsistent, it has around 80 hours of greatness, 20 hours of just good stuff and 20 hours of mediocrity. With that being said it still is among the best games of its genre and a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never saw this coming, but I'm glad it did.

Persona 5 has fun turn-based combat with great fundamentals that allow simple but different strategies. There are lots of fun activities that you can do such as fishing, spending time with confidants, going to Mementos, trying to eat a very big burger and answering questions in class or during exam periods. It may be difficult to get into at first and overwhelming, but you should embrace it and live the life of a Japanese high school student by day and Phantom Thief by night.

Jazz is great, and Persona 5's jazz-themed soundtrack is phenomenal, each piece is appropriate to convey the mood of the setting, and most are so groovy and relaxing that you just want to have the game on in the background or tap your foot, bob your head or just straight-up dance in your room.

Persona 5 is oozing with style, the menu itself has more style than most games. The designs and graphics of Shibuya to the various palaces are pure eye-candy. The cut-ins and persona designs too are quirky and aesthetically pleasing. The animated scenes are great but the 3D scenes using in-game models can feel a bit clunky.

The story in the game heavily draws themes from various mythologies and religion such as the seven deadly sins to Buddhism, Christianity and Platonism (especially towards the end of the game), as well as the Persona series' signature Major Arcana from the tarot cards. All of this conglomerates into an epic journey to save society from adults that unjustly use their power to control the masses of all forms, to eventually trying to defeat a God. It is ambitious, enthralling and a grand journey to save the world.

You are given lots of time to learn each of the characters that are represented by a major arcana, that you derive benefits in their confidant in all aspects. Albeit, not all benefits are equal, each character has an interesting and deep story that helps you connect with the humanity in them that is lacking in most modern games. There are substance and flair with each of the characters and you'll either love them all or at least hold most to a considerate degree of reverence.

Persona 5 is the definitive JRPG experience that will bring you immense enjoyment, immerse you in the world and challenge you to think more about the different persona in people, and in yourself.

Great mechanics. I only won't rate it higher because, considering the game's grand message, I feel there are some inconsistencies, like: LGBT community is seen as very stereotyped, and women seem to be drawn to men's attention, but you can't expect much for a PS4 game in this area anyway... Turn based combat was actually getting pretty old for me but the way the game combines the real world events with mementos makes it so every choice you make matter to make both your Personas and characters stronger. The player should think carefully because each time the story progresses forward there will be a deadline and you gotta always make sure you use your time efficiently. UI is one of the best i've seen in a game the art style is both colourful and vibrant having a unique and great feel to it.
The story gets a bit convoluted and kind of a mess towards the final act but it makes up for it with an Awesome final boss battle and a killer ass soundtrack.

Even if you don't like JRPG'S try out Persona. Trust me, you 'll find something to appreciate.

And to top it off there's the beautiful mundane of living in a specific part of Tokyo, at specific times of the year day by day with the rain, the heat, the pollen counts. Yongen-jaya, Shibuya, and regular places like the batting cages, laundromat, and community baths. Expand

I am not a fan of turn based combat, but Persona has such charm and character that it pull me in. It is still boring after time though.

First things first, as a sequel, is Persona 5 as good as Persona 4 Golden? Not really. Does that matter? Nope. Persona 5 is a fantastic game and a must-play PS4 JRPG fan. If you own a PS4 and you haven't played this one yet, what are you waiting for? Let's jump to the actual review right away.

Persona 5's presentation is beautiful, the game is super aesthetic and the developers really used its theme to perfection. The gameplay is just as good and even improved the already perfect P4G gameplay. Excellent voice acting and finally the option to play with the Japanese audio. I also loved the soundtrack as much as every other Persona's soundtrack.

The things I did not like about this game were some of the party members not being very memorable or interesting unlike all of the P4G cast and some details about the story. But that isn't really a deal-breaker. This game is one of the finest in the whole series and I'm happy it brought more new members to the community. including people who didn't even like JRPGs before. The game is that good and accessible.

Playing this game was quite an experience. It was mostly positive but it does suffer from some major flaws that hinder the gameplay experience quite significantly. I will start with the good things.

I would say that the best part of this game is the music. The soundtrack in general elevates the game and carries most of the flaws very significantly. With the music comes the overall style

I would say that the best part of this game is the music. The soundtrack in general elevates the game and carries most of the flaws very significantly. With the music comes the overall style of this game. It is very memorable, it will stay in your mind and you will remember what persona V is because of the amount of style, be in in the artstyle, the way the story progresses and the Japan and anime style in general. It is very interesting to see how the game touches subjects like the darkness of human psyche within the context of anime and how it mixes with the innocence of a high school context.

The gameplay is fun, with a good flow and ratio of exploring, character development and combat. Combat gets fun once you understand all the mechanics and once your character develops according to your style and your likes. There quite a lot of side quests and side story to accomplish depending on who you end up liking and what you like doing on the game. Some of the mechanics nicely interconnect. I found myself wanting to increase certain character stats to have access to some character stories or to be able to do a certain action within the world.

The world itself is also quite intriguing. I want to go to Japan and visit all these places just from what I saw while playing this game. The amount of cultural references and art style in general makes it so that you get a clear impression of how uniquely strange and fascinating Japanese Culture is. The fact that personas are representations of symbology from different religions and visions around the world is fascinating. There is quite a lot of research in theology and psychology that goes into this game and it is quite noticeable if you know about these subjects.

The characters are quite likable and in some cases even relatable. I found myself wanting to get to know some of them, not only because of the in game bonuses developing my relationship with them would provide, but also because their story is compelling and complex, and representative of something much bigger. Some of the moments and the dialogue would make me laugh out loud and other moments would make me sad and invested, This is something that the game does extremely well.

Now with what I thought were the negatives from this game. I found that the number one flaw this game suffers from is its length. By the end, this game stretches out for far too long for its own good. Even though the progression is good and you do feel you get stronger and stronger and what happens gets you invested, there are some palaces that feel that were crammed into the game just to get them in there. Some of the villains are not as interesting or well developed as others. I like how the game takes you from fixing smaller problems to massive ones but it definitely takes you too long to get you there. I have had very few gaming experiences in which I wanted the game to end already but it just would not. It gives you the impression that it is gonna end too many times just for it to stretch out for 5 or 10 more hours, and it became quite a hustle to finish.

This actually lowered the score significantly for me, since its length and its unwillingness to just end caused me to actually be annoyed by playing a game I had enjoyed for 80 or more hours and just wanting to finish it to not waste all these hours and actually getting to see the end of what started out as a very good and interesting story. I know games nowadays try to give you a lot of story and gameplay, but sometimes this is just not necessary.

Another major flaw this game suffers from is the lack of freedom at times. I would feel trapped very often with no choice but to just read endless amount of dialogue, especially after finishing a boss fight and a palace. Even though the game is linear and the days system is necessary, there were some times that I could not even do a slightly different thing for half an hour several times during gameplay. I could not even save my game because I HAD to be reading the dialogue and see what happened during the game. I wanted to do something different and I found myself having to play 10 game days before I could do anything different than what the game wanted me to do. This felt annoying at times since sometimes you have to stop playing to do something else and the game just does not give you that option.

Some characters also feel unnecessarily crammed into the game. Some members of the Phantoms thieves felt like they had very little business being there, I found myself not caring for some of the people in the group as much as Ann or Ryuji for example. Same goes with bosses and villains, some were inevitably evil and cool, while others were just not important or relevant enough.

Very good game but not at all perfect.

Persona 5 starts off strong but as the game's story progress it starts to fall apart. Persona 5 story was stuck between "serious" and "funny" in some parts it want itself to be serious but also want itself to be funny (with anime tropes) this is the biggest cons point in the game. They tackle current social issues (Sexual Harassment, Corruption, Plagiarism, etc.) but instead of make them thoughtful and push these issues to the ultimate climax, they (ATLUS) choose easy way.

Persona 5 is an absolutely amazing game that convinces with its art style, music and story. It has anything one could ask for such a game and more. The turn-based battle system offers a wide array of opportunities. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely recommended to give it a go.

Persona 5 beats every other turn-based RPG in terms of production values, combat, story, symbolics, character design, music, pace and variety. 2017 is a great year for gaming and Persona 5 confirms this with a load of unmatched swagger.
